John Sung will begin his third season as the head women’s lacross coach at Adrian Col-lege. Sung is the pioneer of women’s lacrosse having coached the team since its inception two years ago. He has compiled a 16-11 record in those two previous seasons, including an impres-sive 10-4 record in 2009.

The program really took another step forward in year two under Sung’s guidance. The team increased their schedule strength and still managed to pull off 10 wins and nearly qualify for the NCAA Division III Tournament. The Bulldogs finished the season ranked third in the final NCAA West Regional rankings and narrowly missed out on an at-large bid.

Sung brought in a top-notch recruiting class in 2009 and the future looks very bright for the women’s lacrosse program at Adrian College. Freshmen Rachel Johnston and Amanda Lambert were both named First Team All-West Region by the IWLCA, while freshman goaltender Laura

Finfrock was named Second Team All-West Region.Sung also had a remarkable opportunity this past summer to be a head coach in the 2009 Lacrosse World Cup in Prague, Czech

Republic. He led the Haudenosaunee Nation, a mixture of Native American Nations, to a 11th place finish out of 16 teams. Sung was the only NCAA Division III head coach to be asked to serve as head coach.

Sung guided the Bulldogs through their inaugural season in 2008 as the only varsity program in the state of Michigan. The Bulldogs got off to a fantastic start winning their first four games, including a season-opening 10-1 win at Waynesburg. Sung’s first squad finished the season with a 6-7 overall record, but managed a very impressive 4-1 record at home.

The coaching philosophy for Sung remains to bring in quality student-athletes who represent Adrian College both on and off the field in a positive manner. He also puts a heavy emphasis on academic success coupled with assisting in the community whenever possible.

Sung came to Adrian from the University of Michigan, where he had spent five years as the assistant women’s club lacrosse coach. Four of the five Wolverine teams that Sung helped to coach have made appearances in the USL-WDIA final four. The Wolverines ac-cumulated a 93-22 record while he was the assistant coach. Also while at U of M, Sung was in charge of recruiting for the team and had one goalie tabbed as the pre-season player of the year.

A longtime trainer of goalies, Sung has held various coaching positions with Birmingham Seaholm High School and the Detroit Lacrosse Club. He has been the assistant director of the Great Lakes Women’s Lacrosse Camp since 1997.

As a player, Sung was a captain of the Oakland University lacrosse team from 1996-1997. He was also a member of two Interna-tional Cup Championship teams. Sung earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in communications from Oakland University.

Emilia Ward returns for her second season as the assistant women’s lacrosse coach at Adrian College. She joined the program in July 2008 and has done a great job helping build a strong program. Ward has worked very closely with a talented group of young players who have benefitted from her instruction. Last year, the Adrian Bulldogs ranked fourth in NCAA Division III in scoring offense (17.43 goals per game), eighth in scoring defense (8.07 goals per game) and third in scoring margin (+9.36 goals per game).

Ward is a 2008 graduate of Manhattan College earning her bachelor’s degree in communi-cations with an emphasis in broadcast and corporate concentrations.

Ward played four years at Manhattan College, a Division I program, and excelled both on and off the field. She made the honor roll in all eight semesters and was named to the dean’s list four times. She also was a member of Lambda Pi Eta Honors Society for two years and served

as the treasurer during her senior year. On the field, Ward started all 14 games as a senior and registered three goals and 16 assists for the Jaspers. She also played in

10 games and started four times as a junior and had two goals and four assists. After each of the last three years, she has been named MAAC All-Academic.

Ward prepped at Farmington Hills Mercy High School and helped lead her team to a state championship in 2004. She earned First Team All-State honors as a junior and senior. She held her school scoring record of 58 goals in a season upon graduation. She also excelled in field hockey earning Honorable Mention All-State plaudits as a junior and senior. Ward also was a team captain on the ice hockey squad at Mercy as a junior and senior.

Ward has coaching experience at the Detroit Lacrosse Club during the summer months since 2005. She has also assisted at the University of Michigan women’s lacrosse camp (2007) and the Michigan State University women’s lacrosse clinic (2006, 2007).

Head Coach John Sung began to smile when asked about this year’s group of women’s lacrosse players at Adrian College. You see this is the third year of the program with Sung leading the team to higher ground each season. After a 10-4 record a year ago, the team narrowly missed out on their first trip to the NCAA Division III Tournament finishing third in the West Region. When asked what motivates his team coming into this season, he doesn’t skip a beat by saying “we have something to prove.”

That motivation will carry the team into 2010 as the Bulldogs have been picked by some media outlets as the team to beat in the West Region. The reason for optimism is the fact that every starter is back from last year and Sung and assistant coach Emilia Ward have also brought in eight newcomers who will challenge last year’s players for significant playing time. The competition should be fierce but Sung says that is what makes a team great.

“We have very spirited practices and the depth on this year’s team is what gives me a big smile,” commented Sung. “We have a great deal of natural, raw ability and the sky is the limit for this team. We talk about being left out of the dance last year and that has made our players work that much harder during the offseason. Our third-year players are providing needed leadership and our sophomores are a year wiser and more experienced.”

The team must “keep focused” according to Sung and he has had them doing mental training as well as physical training in preparation for this season. “You look at some of the greats in their sport and what sets them apart is their mental ability to prepare. Peyton Manning is not the most physically blessed quarterback, but he knows the game better than anyone. I want our players to be ready for every challenge.”

The program is heading in the right direction and it begins with a talented group of returners. A trio of sophomores were named All-Region as freshmen. RachelJohnston (St. Catharines, Ont.) and AmandaLambert (Sloatsburg, N.Y.) were named First Team All-West Region by the IWLCA, while LauraFinfrock (Deerfield, Ill.) was named Second Team All-West Region.

Johnston was a scoring machine for the Bulldogs with 83 goals. She also added seven assists for a total of 90 points in her first season. Johnston finished second in Division III in goals per game and fifth in total goals.

Lambert was a great complimentary scorer with 54 goals and also had 14 assists for a total of 68 points. Her point total ranked 97th in Division III and she ranked 38th nationally in goals per game.

Finfrock was one of the top goalies in Division III during her freshman year. She ranked 14th nationally in goals against average at 8.55 per game. She also made 97 saves and ranked 32nd nationally in save percentage at .500.

“Rachel is a tremendous offensive player,” said Sung. “She and Amanda work very well together and gives us a great one-two punch. Amanda is our best all-around player and has Division I ability. We are very lucky that she is in our program. Laura has really improved this offseason and she will be even better this year.”

The attack position also returns junior MarianaDiGiovanni(Troy, Mich.) who led the team with 15 assists last season. She also had 20 goals and was fourth on the team in points.

“Mariana is someone that we expect to have a big season,” said Sung. “She has developed into a physically stronger player and has improved each year.”

Jovelle Ward (Ann Arbor, Mich.) and Stacey Birlson (Centennial, Colo.) are also terrific attackers who will factor into the starting lineup. Ward can get lost in the shuffle on this team, but her 22 goals and six assists as a freshman make her a viable option on offense. Birlson was a prep standout at Arapahoe High School in Colorado and spent four years on the varsity squad. She led the Warriors to the state semifinals as a sophomore and junior

and started every game during her four years.The midfield spots are secure as Lambert leads this fine group.

LindseyDay (Apple Valley, Minn.) had a great freshman year with 33 goals and eight assists. She ranked third on the team in goals and points. OliviaDuncan (Orangeville, Ont.) is scheduled to start for the Bulldogs as a freshman and played north of the border at Orangeville District Secondary School.

The defense will be “completely different” according to Sung in terms of personnel and scheme. “We know that playing great defense is the key to advancing toward our goal of making the NCAA Tournament,” said Sung. “During the summer, I had the opportunity to coach in the Women’s World Cup against the best players in the world. The experience was amazing and I know we can use the things I learned to make us better. I saw that defense is a solid foundation to any team.”

One of the players on Sung’s Haudenosaunee Nation squad was KatrinaRabishaw (Sharon, Ont.) who was a key factor in Adrian being the eighth-best scoring defense in Division III last season. Rabishaw will be joined by CassieHoyez (Circle Pines, Minn.) and TaylorCelski (Plymouth, Minn.). The North Star State products bring a quicker, physical presence to the defense. Each one had a great prep career as Celski was named Second Team All-State as a senior and Hoyez was named Honorable Mention All-State during her final campaign.

The goaltending spot sees Finfrock as the incumbent starter and AmandaFaraone (Mentor, Ohio) as a very capable backup. Faraone is beginning her third year with the program and played in six games a year ago. She logged 132 minutes and made 12 saves with a 5.91 goals against average.

The schedule features a matchup with defending Division III national champion Franklin & Marshall on March 9. “That game will be a barometer for our program,” said Sung. “They lost a lot of talent to graduation, but they are a stiff challenge year after year. We will be excited for the opportunity.”

The final game of the season against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in California might also be a chance for Adrian to show their arrival on a national level.

ADRIANCOLLEGEAdrian College evolved from a theological institute founded by the Wesleyan Methodist denomination at Leoni, Michigan, a small town east of Jackson, in 1845. In 1855 this institute united with the Leoni Seminary, a Methodist Protestant institution, to establish Michigan Union College.

Legend states that members of the College became concerned about the environment at Leoni, which was nicknamed “Whiskey Town.” In 1859, this concern and other circumstances made it advisable to relocate or close. In the same year, Dr. Asa Mahan, pastor of the Plymouth Congregational Church in Adrian and a well-known educator, was encouraged by citizens of the community to establish a college. Mahan had served as the first president of Oberlin College and, before that, as an officer of Lane Theological Seminary in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Dr. Mahan and his colleagues invited the officials and supporters of the closing Michigan Union College to join in establishing the new college at Adrian. After the invitation was accepted, the story says, the library holdings were loaded on an ox-cart in March 1859, and transported 60 miles to the new campus site on the west side of Adrian.

On March 28, 1859, Adrian College was chartered by the Michigan legislature as a degree-granting institution with Dr. Mahan as its first president. Through a series of consolidations and denomination unifications, the College has maintained its relationship with The United Methodist Church.

For almost 100 years, the campus consisted of several brick buildings stretching along Madison Street. Most of today’s campus was woods and fields. In the mid-1950s, the College, encouraged by the generosity of Ray W. Herrick, embarked in a building program that established the basis for the current campus.

Today, when students walk in the area bounded on the east by Madison Street and edged by Downs Hall, Valade Hall, Cornelius House and Herrick Tower, they tread on the same ground that students hurried across in 1859 as they rushed to classes, meals and social events. Now, however, the campus consists of 100 acres, over 20 academic and service buildings and 10 residence halls, plus apartments and themed housing.

Dr. Jeffrey R. Docking, 17th president of Adrian College, earned a doctorate in social ethics from Boston University, a Master of Divinity degree from Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary, and a bachelor’s degree from Michigan State University. He became president July 2005.

Before coming to Adrian, he held positions at Washington & Jefferson College in Washington, Penn., most recently as vice president and special assistant to the president, and as vice president of student affairs and dean of student affairs. He also has experience teaching and working in residence life. He and his wife Elizabeth have four children.
