2010 Accomplishments
• UnitedWayofPierceCountycontinuedtoworkwithpartnerssuchasFirst5FUNdamentalstoincreasethenumberofchildrenreadytolearnuponstartingschool.ThroughtheChildren’sMuseum’sPlaytoLearnProgramandPromotingFirstRelationships,familiesareincorporatinglearningthrougheverydayactivities.
• UnitedWayawardedourfirstincomegranttoPierceCountyHousingAuthority’sOpportunityWorksprogram.Theeffortwasthefirstincreatinganimprovedsysteminfinancialstabilityandeconomicself-sufficiency.
• UnitedWaycontinuedtofocusonincreasingaccesstohealthcarethroughprogramslikeAccesstoBabyandChildDentistry(ABCD).
• TheCommunityCampaignraised$6milliondollarsthroughworkplacecampaignsandindividualdonors.
• Federalemployeesandmilitarypersonneldonated$1.4milliontotheCombinedFederalCampaign,settinganall-timehighfortheCFCofSouthPugetSound.
• The2010CFCcampaignreceivednationalrecognitionasthecampaignover$1millionwiththehighestincrease.

• UnitedWayofPierceCountycontinuedtoadministertheSouthSound2-1-1helplineatthelowestcost,withthehighestsatisfactionrateandquickestresponsetimeintheNorthwest.
• 2010wasthe23rdconsecutiveyearthatexternalauditorsgaveUnitedWayofPierceCountyacleanaudit.Aclean,independentauditmeansinternalcontrolsensurereportinginformationisreliable,credibleandtransparent.
• TheMarketingTeamatUWPCwashonoredbythenationalCFCboardforcreatingthebestCombinedFederalCampaignPosterinthenation.Inpreviousyears,theteamwasselectedasthebestinthenationinrollingoutUnitedWayWorldwidebrandLIVEUNITED.
UnitedWayofPierceCountymetthe20StandardsforCharityAccountabliltytoreceivethisNationalCharitySeal.
Dear Friends;As2010began,thesceneleftinthewakeofthisrecessionwasafamiliarone.Morepeopleinneedasaresultoflayoffs,downsizingandrisingcostsforbasicneeds.Financialchallenges,aspeoplemadetoughchoicesthatoftenincludeddecreasingoreliminatingcharitablegiving.Ahumanservicescommunitytryingtoservefarmorepeoplewithless.However,whatwasmoststrikingaboutthispastyearwastheresiliencyofourcommunity.Morethan12,000donorscontributedtothecampaign.Over$1.4milliondollarsindonatedgoodsweregiventoUnitedWay’sGiftsInKindprogram.Communitychampionsworkedtoachievesystemicchangesandformvaluablepartnershipsthatwillhelpcreatelong-termsolutions.Over4,000volunteersdonatedtheirtimetocompleteserviceprojects.Anastounding318studentsearnedVarsityLettersinCommunityServicefortheirvolunteerwork,averagingover244hoursofservice.Long-timecorporatesupporterRussellInvestmentsstimulatedthe2010CommunityCampaignwithagenerousChallengeMatch.Thegiftmade$500,000availabletomatchallnewdollarsdonatedtotheCommunitySolutionsFund.TheBillandMelindaGatesFoundationalsojoinedin,addinganadditional$500,000tothematch,helpingtotriplegiftsfromdonorswhohadn’tgiveninthelastyear.Morethan5,000qualifyinggiftsweredonatedandover$800,000ofthematchingfundswereachieved.Intheend,nearly600,000peoplewerehelpedthroughnonprofitpartnerprogramsfundedbyUnitedWayofPierceCounty.Morethan30,000childrenreceivedthenurturingandguidancetheyneededtobebetterpreparedtosucceeduponenteringschool.Over6,000peoplemaintainedtheirhomesandmadestridestowardbecomingfinanciallyself-sufficient.Nearly45,000peopleimprovedtheiraccesstovitalhealthcare.Morethan500,000peoplereceivedhelpwithemergencyservicessuchasshelter,foodandutilityassistance.Thesenumberscanonlyhappenwhenweworktogether,united.ThePierceCountycommunitysteppedupdespitetheirownchallengesandhelpedsupportoneanother.Forthat,weapplaudyou.Sincerely,

America’sPromiseAllianceandING.The100Bestdesignationrecognizesthosecommunitiesthatmake
youthaprioritybyimplementingprogramsthathelpkeepchildreninschoolandpreparethemforcollegeand
the21stcenturyworkforce.AmongthemanycollaborativeprogramscitedinthehonorwasUnitedWayof
PierceCounty’sYouthUnited.YouthUnitedisinspiring,engagingandmobilizingyouthtomakeadifference
intheircommunitythroughleadershiptrainingandvolunteerism.Theprogramfosterscitizenshipandincludes
developmentapplicabletotheclassroomandeverydaylifetobuildfutureleaders.
Additionally,UnitedWayofPierceCountypartneredwithTacoma360,anewinitiativeoftheCityofTacoma,
TacomaPublicSchoolsandMetroParksTacoma,createdtoimprovestudentsuccessbystrengtheningand
aligningschoolandcommunityservices.Theprogramstrivestoimproveacademicachievementandincrease
theopportunitiesavailabletostudents.

Joyceisasingle-motherworkinghardtoprovideforhertwochildren.Likemanyintherecenteconomic
downturn,shewaslaidofffromherjobandsoonfoundherselfunabletopayrent.Facinghomelessness,
JoycesoughthelpfromWashingtonWomen’sEmploymentandEducation(WWEE).Shemetwithaspecialist
inWWEE’sHousingBridgetoSelf-Sufficiencyprogram,oneofthe115localprogramsfundedbyUnitedWay
ofPierceCounty.Joyce’sspecialisthelpedherdevelopanactionplanthatwouldassistherinbecomingmore
stableandworkedwithhertoprepareherresumeandfindemployment.TheplanhelpedJoycemaintainher
homedespiteherfinancialchallengesandallowedhertogetbackonherfeet.
UnitedWay’sCommunitySolutionsFundsupports18geographicallyandculturallydiverseprogramswiththe
goalofprovidingaffordablehousingandhelpingfamiliesbecomefinanciallyself-sufficient.UWPCalsopartners
withotherlocalorganizationstoincreasethenumberofaffordablehousingunitsavailabletothecommunity.

Partnership Makes New Eatonville MultiCare Clinic a Reality
Peopleinruralareashavelimitedaccesstohealthcare.For
residentsofsouthernPierceCounty,likeEatonville,Ashford
andElbe,accessinghealthcaremeantdrivingmorethan20
milesaway.Residentsrecognizedtheareawasunderserved
andcouldbeoneoftheworstaffectedintheeventofadisaster
onMountRainier.That’swhentheycontactedUnitedWayof
PierceCounty.TheUWPCHealthImpactteambroughttogether
keypartnersfromMultiCare/GoodSamaritanandlocalleaders
wholaterbuiltanewhealthcarefacility.Thenewfacilitynow
servesmorepatientsandprovidesx-rayandlabservices,making
accessinghealthcareeasierforthoseinoutlyingareasofPierceCounty.
Additionally,UnitedWaypartneredwiththeHealthyEating,ActiveLiving(HEAL)staffatTacoma-Pierce
CountyHealthDepartmentandYMCAandbeganpromotinghealthyeating,activelivingeffortstoreduce
obesity.Theprogramisbeingimplementedinlocalschoolsandbroughttostateleadersforconsideration
statewide.

SamandhisfamilyrecentlytransferredtoJointBaseLewis-McChordandsoonfoundthecostoflivinginTacoma
muchdifferentthanhispreviouspost.Ashisfamilystruggledtoliveonhissalary,heturnedtoFISHFoodBanks.
Samquicklyrealizedhischildrenwouldnothaveenoughnutritiousfoodstoeatontheirlimitedbudget.Weekly
visitstothefoodbankhelpedstretchtheirbudgetandfilltheirpantrywiththefoodhisfamilyneeded.
LikeSam,Peterandhisfamilywerenotpreparedtoloseeverythinginahousefire.Whileoutwithfriends,they
receivedthecallthattheirhomehadbeenrobbedandsetonfire.Everythingtheyownedwasgoneandtheyhad
norenter’sinsurance.ThankstotheAmericanRedCrossDisasterEmergencyprogram,thefamilywasprovided
withfundsforahotelroom,foodandclothing.Withtheirbasicneedsmet,Peterwasabletofocusonfindinga
newhomeandhelpinghisfamilyrecoverfromthisunexpecteddisaster.
EmergencyservicesprogramsfundedbytheCommunitySolutionsFundhelpover500,000peopleinneed.
Theseprogramsprovideaccesstofoodandshelterandhelpwithrentandutilityassistance.

thejobandwhilewaitingforL&Ipaymentstocomeinthecouplewasunabletopaytheirbills.South
Sound2-1-1connectedhertoseveralagenciesthatcombinedtohelpcovertheirbillsforthemonth.
Whiletheystillhadalongroadahead,Elizabethandherhusbandwerecomfortedknowingthatthey
foundtheimmediatehelptheyneeded.

TheSouthSound2-1-1CallCentertakescallsfrompeoplewhoneedassistanceinPierce,ThurstonandLewiscounties.SouthSound2-1-1received83,848callsin2010,connectingpeoplewithhousing,food,utilityassistance,transportationandmore.
Callcenterstaffansweredarecord-breaking9,062callsinDecember2010.
GiftsinKind
Individualsandlocalbusinessesshareinthemissionofreachingouttohelpourcommunitybydonatingin-kindproductslikeofficeequipment,furnitureandclothingthroughUnitedWayofPierceCounty.Alldonationsareredistributedtononprofitorganizationsandclientsinneedofassistance.
Thetotalvalueofgoodsdistributedin2010tocommunitynonprofitsinPierceCountythroughtheGiftsinKindprogramwas$1,460,545.
VolunteerCenter
Overthecourseof2010,UnitedWayofPierceCounty’sVolunteerCenterconnected1,362peoplewithopportunitiestoserve,creatingawayforthemtosharetheirtimeandtalentswithothers.UnitedWayvolunteersincludeindividuals,families,youth,seniors,groups,businesses,schools,churches,serviceclubsandotherswithadesiretoservetheircommunity.Inaddition,theVolunteerCenterconnectedsponsorsto1,318studentsthroughBacktoSchooland1,282peoplethroughSeasonofCaring.
64groupprojectsengaged794volunteersresultingin3,176hoursofservice.
YouthUnited
YouthUnitedempowersyouthtoidentifyandactonemergingcommunityissues.Thisprogramoffershighschoolstudentsanopportunitytobepartofacountywideyouthcouncilthatplansandcarriesoutcommunityserviceprojectsthroughouttheyear.YUrecognized318studentswiththeirVarsityLetterinCommunityServiceforcontributing78,465hoursofservice.Additionally,23studentsreceivedtheWillieStewartCommunityServiceScholarship.StudentshonoredwererepresentativeofallpublichighschoolsinPierceCounty.
658studentsengagedin60projectsresultingin2,538hoursofservice.
