TEAM HISTORY

cometsports.utdallas.edu8

2009 at a glanceThe UT Dallas women’s soccer team went through an October drought that nearly cost them a trip to the American Southwest Con-ference Tournament, but suddenly rattled off a string of upset wins and advanced all the way to the league title tilt against Hardin-Simmons.

UTD (7-8-6) capped the 2009 regular season with two overtime victories, then eliminated Mississippi College and UT Tyler via shootout before falling to HSU, 3-0, in the championship game. The final loss brought an end to the Comets’ streak, which included a semifinal showdown with UTT that lasted 14 rounds of penalty kicks. Their late-season surge marked the program’s 11th con-secutive winning season in ASC play—not to mention its sixth appearance in the league title game.

“It was one of the most memorable times that I’ve ever had here,” said UTD coach John Antonisse. “It caused a few gray hairs, but it was worth it.”

The Comets’ playoff hopes looked bleak after dropping two straight games to LeTourneau and East Texas Baptist (Oct. 23-24) on their final road trip. When they returned to Richardson, the Comets were defibrillated by a pair of overtime wins over UTT and Concordia (TX), with Emily George and Cassie Lydick providing the heroics, respectively. George’s game-winning goal against the Patriots came in double overtime—in the 101st minute—while Lydick’s strike sunk CTX and clinched UTD’s seventh straight ASC Tournament berth.

“They could have caved in,” said Antonisse. “They could have said, ‘Coach, nothing’s working.’ But they decided to keep forging ahead. And we did.”

In the first round of the tournament (held in Abilene, TX), Andrea Jones and Katie Makanani scored goals in a 2-2 stalemate with MC, then claimed an insurmountable 4-1 lead in penalty kicks to advance past the Choctaws, who were seeded third. The next day, UTD and UTT played 110 minutes of scoreless soccer. It took 14 rounds of penalty kicks before the Com ets’ Emily Hokanson, a freshman, found the back of the net and lifted UTD to an 11-10 win in the “golden goal” frame.

But on Nov. 8, HSU dismantled a Comets squad that was running on fumes after two con- secutive double-overtime games. The Cowgirls scored two goals in the first 25 minutes and outshot UTD 18-4 throughout, earning their seventh straight trip to the NCAA Div. III Tournament.

“I think what you saw at the end of the season is that we really belong near the top of the conference,” said Antonisse. “And I anticipate that we’re going to get back to the top of the conference.”

The Comets will lose a slew of accomplished seniors in the offseason, including George, Kristina Kinner, Caitlin Perdue, Stephanie Babcock, Kayla Day and Liz Dillon. Perdue, a former ASC All-Conference selection, started just eight games in 2009 because of a leg injury. George and Day, joined by sophomores Brittany Ansel and Makanani, earned All-ASC Second Team honors. Kinner was elected to the All-ASC Third Team.

“They were six talented players and they were good for four years,” said Antonisse. “They had a huge part in us stepping up at the end of the season.”

senior send-off Liz Dillon, Caitlin Perdue, Emily George and Stephanie Babcock (left to right) — seniors on UTD’s 2009 team — share a parting moment during their final game at the UTD Soccer Field. George provided one of two Comet strikes in a 2-1 overtime win over Concordia (TX) on Oct. 31, so-lidifying UTD’s place in the 2009 ASC Championship Tournament.

2010 previewFor the UT Dallas women’s soccer team, it’s all about playing with a sense of urgency, even from the first kickoff of a grueling 10-week regular season.

Urgency didn’t sink in for last year’s team until late October, when the Comets rattled off a pair of overtime wins to reserve the final seat in the American Southwest Conference Tournament. It then required penalty kick shootout wins over UT-Tyler and Mississippi College to make an appearance in the ASC title tilt — all of which seemed im-probable for a team that began 2009 with a 0-3-2 record.

Thus, John Antonisse, entering his 14th season as UTD’s head coach, has been tasked with replacing the six senior starters who guided the Comets during last year’s playoff push and eradicating stagnancy in early September.

“You’re going to see a team that’s much more disciplined in the way they play, and a team that’s more in tune with what we need to accomplish this year,” said Antonisse, “especially at the beginning of the season.”

The Comets’ 2010 squad is young. Only two experienced seniors are on the roster, and over half the players are un-derclassmen — freshmen and sophomores. But there is nothing sophomoric about this team, according to Antonisse. Coupled with an impressive influx of transfers, this year’s recruiting class may help steer UTD back to the ASC finals, or further.

Newcomers like Jean Francis, Eboni Udenze, Savannah Sullivan, Elizabeth Sohns and Taylor Pounds — a transfer from Division I Sam Houston State — could find themselves with starting gigs on Sept. 1, when UTD travels to Austin, TX, to play Huston-Tillotson in the season opener. All six freshmen, in fact, are “ready to play right now.”

“They’re so mature,” said Antonisse of his freshman class. “They don’t seem like typical freshmen. They have win-ning attitudes and I think all of them will have an impact this year.”

Pounds, a sophomore, is a versatile midfielder who is still nursing a season-ending injury from 2009, but is near full-strength. Udenze is a dynamic forward who will complement high-octane scorer Leah Bowyer up front. Sullivan and Francis will compete for minutes in UTD’s midfield, while Sohns and fellow freshmen Krysta Howard and Jamie Rheman are capable of filling gaps in the Comets’ defense.

But despite the swarm of new faces in training camp, UTD is equipped with key returnees throughout the lineup. Se-nior goalkeeper Andrea Jones will assume her duties in net, Brittany Ansel, voted last year’s Team MVP, will again anchor the backfield, and All-ASC midfielder Katie Makanani is back for her junior season.

Plus, the Comets return their top two leading scorers from 2009, Bowyer and Cassie Lydick. The strikers combined for 11 of UTD’s 21 goals last fall, though neither had any assists.

“I expect this team to play at a higher level,” said Antonisse. “We can’t have a slow period or learning curve where we don’t play at the level we’re capable of. I think we’ll start at a high level, and get stronger as the year goes on.”

UTD’s recalibrated roster will be showcased in its home opener against North Park Univ. (IL) on Sept. 3. The Com-ets will kick off the conference season when Mississippi College travels to Richardson on Sept. 16.

UT DALLAS WOMEN’S SOCCER 2010

john antonissehead coach • 14th season

John Antonisse, a bona fide veteran of the UT Dallas coaching staff, will enter his 14th season as the women’s soccer head coach in 2010, one season after guiding the program to its eighth straight American Southwest Conference Tournament. Perennially, his teams are regionally ranked and forces to be reckoned with among ASC competition since earning league membership prior to the 2002 season.

Under Antonisse’s reign, the UTD women have qualified for every ASC Tour-nament the team has been eligible to play in, have advanced to five of the last seven ASC title games, and have won or shared two conference crowns.

In his 13 seasons as head coach, Antonisse’s teams have compiled a 159-69- 29 overall record. Since posting their first winning record in 1999, his Comets have won or tied 183 of their 231 games over the past 10 seasons – dubbing UTD one of the most successful programs in the NCAA Division III nation land- scape.

Antonisse is a local product, graduating from nearby J.J. Pearce High School (Richardson, TX). He played collegiate soccer at Richland Col- lege, then at the University of Tulsa before earning a BS degree in mar- keting in 1986. He completed a Master’s degree from Amberton Uni- versity in the spring of 2004.

After beginning his coaching career at UTD as an assistant men’s soccer coach in the mid-1990’s, Antonisse became a head coach at the University of Dallas (Irving, TX) in 1996-97, then returned to spearhead UTD women’s soccer program in 1997. During his tenure at UTD, Antonisse has been crowned the ASC Coach of the Year three times.

Antonisse also coaches for the Dallas Texans Soccer Club, one of the most prestigious organizations in the country. He also holds a USSF “A” License and an NSCAA “Premier” diploma.

THE AMERICAN SOUTHWEST CONFERENCE

29

Amy Carlton was named Commissioner of the NCAA Division III affiliat-ed American Southwest Conference on Feb. 8, 2007 by the ASC Council of Presidents after serving in an interim commissioner role since July 1, 2006.

Carlton is the second full-time commissioner of the ASC following Fred Jacoby, who retired in June 2006 after guiding the ASC for 10 years as the league’s first commissioner (1996-2006). Carlton joined the ASC staff as Director of Media Relations in January 2002 and was promoted to Assistant Commissioner in May 2003.

Carlton is one of 11 women who serve as commissioner of an NCAA Division III confer-ence, guiding the largest conference among the group.

A native of Greencastle, Ind., Carlton earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in journalism from Franklin College (Ind.) in 1981 and completed graduate courses in athletic administration at Western Illinois University.

Carlton spent over 20 years on college and university campuses, including 13-1/2 years in sports information opera-tions at three NCAA Division I institutions. She joined the ASC staff after 10 years as Assistant Director of Athletic Media Relations at the University of Michigan (1990-2000) and was Assistant Sports Information Director at Northern Illinois University (1989-90). Carlton was a graduate sports information intern at both Western Illinois (1987-88) and Michigan (1988-89). She began her career as assistant director of the news bureau at Franklin College, before moving to Man-chester College (Ind.) where she was Director of News and Sports Information for five years (1982-87).

Carlton is a member of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA), National Association of Division III Athletic Administrators (NADIIIAA) and the National Association of Collegiate Women Athletic Administrators (NACWAA). She is a member of the Sportsmanship and Ethical Conduct Committee of the Division III Conference Com-missioners Association.

Carlton and husband Chuck, a writer in the Dallas Morning News sports department, have a daughter, Taylor, and reside in southeastern Denton County.

A sports writer with the Temple Daily Telegram prior to coming to the ASC, Weghorst provided coverage of the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, Central Texas Blackhawks/Marshals of the North American Hockey League and Temple-area high schools. He was part of the coverage team for the 2005 EV1.net Houston Bowl and the 2004 Major League

Baseball All-Star Game, and also contributed to the magazine Total Texas Baseball.

Weghorst, a native of Waco, Texas, is a 2003 graduate of Mary Hardin-Baylor with a Bachelor of Arts degree in mass communications/journalism. While an undergraduate, he was a reporter in features, sports and personality profiles at The Bells and worked as a disc jockey for KBDE-FM in Waco. RICHARDSON, TX (04.12.10) — The American Southwest Conference announced on Monday, April 12, 2010, that Centenary College, once an NCAA Division I member of the Summit League, will become the ASC’s 16th member in 2011-12. At the crux of the recently rennovated UTD Soccer Complex is the main playing field, located at the southernmost end of campus. Equipped with lights, donated by Lake High-lands Soccer Club, the field has served as the host site for two ASC Championship Tourna-ments and is also utilized by local club soc-cer teams. In fact, FC Dallas, a professional soccer team based in Frisco, TX, once used the field as a practice facility. In 2009, a state-of-the-art Daktronics scoreboard was affixed near the south goal.

Like the primary soccer field, the UTD Softball Field has been subject to the department’s outdoor refurbishment projects. It was also equipped with a Daktronics scoreboard in 2009, when the lining of its new outfield fenc-ing reached completion. The field is bordered by two seating areas located along the first- and third-base lines. Batting cages are found just east of the home dugout. The field, in recent days, has been made media-friendly.

The UTD Baseball Field is home to the Com-ets’ perennially successful baseball squad, which has compiled a sterling record of 75-26 at the facility since the start of the 2006 sea-son. The field hosted the 2007 ASC Baseball Championships, and is used by local club and recreational league teams on a yearlong basis. In the latter part of the 2000s, extra seating was added, along with several media plat-forms. It also was the recipient of Daktronics scoreboard technology in 2009.

Found on the east side of campus, the UTD Tennis Courts are nestled between the Eugene McDermott Library and the School of Man-agement. UTD’s men’s and women’s tennis squads host home matches on these courts, though, in the event that inclement weather moves in, the teams are able to play indoors at nearby Canyon Creek Country Club. The courts are popular among on-campus resi-dents, faculty and staff, and intramural sports leagues.

Inside the UTD Activity Center is a 3,200-seat gymnasium, home to the school’s men’s and women’s basketball teams and nationally ranked volleyball team. It was the site of an NCAA Division III Men’s Basketball Regional Final in 2010, and throughout the past three years has hosted three separate ASC Champi-onship Tournaments. The Activity Center also houses the athletic department offices, training facilities, an auxiliary gym, racquetball and squash courts, a 25-yard pool and the school’s rec sports department. It was built in 1999.

The Canyon Creek Country Club has gracious-ly fostered the growth of various UTD athletic programs, including the golf and tennis teams. Every fall, it hosts the Lady Comet Classic and the athletic department’s annual Comet Club Golf Tournament, a fundraising event. Located on Custer Parkway in Richardson, it allows the men’s and women’s golf teams year-round access for practices and other team events. In the event of inclement weather, the club welcomes UTD’s tennis teams to engage in ASC matches indoors.

Located approximately 10 miles north of downtown Dallas, UTD’s sprawling campus, found within the city limits of Richardson, TX, offers a multitude of op-portunities for visiting fans and families — but especially for students seeking to study at a top-notch, world-class research university. The campus was originally a small, Texas Instruments-funded facility known as the Graduate Research Center of the Southwest, established in 1961. Since then, the University of Texas at Dallas has expanded tenfold. Now, UTD enrolls nearly 15,000 students on a 500-acre campus solely dedicated to fostering academic greatness.
