Leon JohnsonHead Coach

28th Season

The phrase "legendary" gets tossedaround too easily when discussing athleticpersonalities, but nobody who's competedfor, worked with, or competed againstLeon Johnson would disagree that he'sapproaching legendary status as a trackand field coach.

As he enters his 28th season incharge of track and field at NorthwesternState, he retains the same joy for coach-ing and teaching, the same burning com-petitive drive to excel and the same hum-ble and diligent approach to every day.

Those who are called "legends" intheir chosen field always carry with them apassion for what they do, and they consis-tently achieve at a level that exceeds thegrandest expectations.

So it is with Johnson, whose statureis already "legendary" in Louisiana HighSchool track and field circles, and in col-legiate track and field, he's an iconamong his peers across the nation.

When disagreement erupted at the2005 NCAA Mideast RegionalChampionships over how to restart therain-delayed competition in the 200, aroom full of coaches and NCAA officialsquickly turned to hear Johnson's perspec-tive.

At Southland Conference champi-onship events over the past 10+ years, league and meet officials have alwayssought Johnson's counsel on rules andadministrative issues.

The Louisiana High School AthleticAssociation has been holding its all-clas-

sifications state cross country champi-onships at Northwestern for more than adecade, relying on Johnson and his stafffor smooth management of a massiveevent involving thousands of competitorsfrom every corner of the state. In January, the LHSAA gave him its “DistinguishedService Award.”

In each of the past three OlympicGames, one of Johnson's athletes hascompeted for Team USA -- both triplejumpers, LaMark Carter in the 2000Sydney Games and Kenta Bell in the 2004Athens Games, and the 2008 BeijingOlympic Games.

Johnson's son, Dean, who has spentmore than 16 seasons working under hisfather after competing for him at NSU, istoday regarded by USA Track and Field asone of the nation's bright horizontal jumpscoaches -- a chip off the old block.

Johnson also tutored Lady Demonhead coach Mike Heimerman, who alsocompeted for the Demons in the mid-1990s in the shot and discus. Heimermanhas emerged as one of the country's topyoung throws coaches, taking javelin com-petitors to NCAA national championshipsin nine of the last 10 years -- all of those

competitors coming from Louisiana, win-ning six All-America honors.

Speaking of All-Americans, Johnsonhas produced 46 in his 26 seasons ascoach. In track and field, there's no subjec-tivity -- that honor is earned by placementat the national meet, measured againstevery Division I competitor in the countryin each event.

In his fifth decade of coaching,Johnson still brings a youthful energy toeach day. Watching him at practice or in acompetition, he is constantly in motion, offering encouragement, motivation andtechnical advice to his athletes.

He is, as well, part of the heart andsoul of the Northwestern athletic depart-ment, which is enjoying perhaps its mostsustained stretch of across-the-board suc-cess in school history, based on the num-ber of Southland Conference champi-onships and NCAA postseason appear-ances by teams in the past decade.Athletic director Greg Burke attributes asignificant share of the credit to Johnson, whose persona has made him a rolemodel to coaches and staff in every sportduring the past decade.

invited Johnson along with the team on a2006 trip to Hawaii as a token of admira-tion for his mentorship, friendship, self-lessness and loyalty – qualities that can’tbe taken for granted in today’s environ-ment.

Whether or not the word "legendary"fits him yet (and he wouldn’t accept thatidea), there's been no doubt for years that"unselfish" does, along with the descrip-tion as "a team player" and a "caring col-league and coach."

He's won a wall full of Coach of theYear honors in the longest tenure of anytrack coach in Northwestern sports history.Johnson has become the dean of trackand field coaches at Northwestern and inthe state of Louisiana. During thoseyears, he has not only continued, butenhanced the reputation of NSU as a pro-gram that has remained remarkably com-petitive nationally, standing the test oftime.

Johnson has coached NSU to Top 20finishes in both the indoor and outdoorNCAA Division I Championships.

He has led the Demons to nine con-ference championships and been namedconference Coach of the Year eight times. As a prep coach, he was named stateCoach of the Year three times.

He's served as meet referee for theprestigious Oklahoman Daily ClassicIndoor Meet and served on the NCAAChampionships Throws Jury.

At Northwestern, he started theLady Demon track and field program. In1999, Johnson was inducted in theGraduate N Club Hall of Fame in tribute tohis accomplishments and dedication toNSU and its track and field program.

For 16 consecutive seasons from1989-2005, the Demons finished in the tophalf of the men’s team standings at theSouthland Conference Outdoors. For 10straight years, 1996-2005, Northwesternwas the top scoring Louisiana team in theSLC men’s standings. After Johnson hasshaped a tremendous recruiting class in2008 and 2009, the Demons look ready toreturn to form.

Prior to being appointed head coachat NSU in the fall of 1982, Johnsoncoached at DeRidder High School. Whilethere, he won the Louisiana Class AAAstate title and was named the high schooltrack and field coach of the year in 1982.

During this stint, he twice led the Dragonsto second place finishes in the state crosscountry competition.

Before going to DeRidder, Johnsoncoached at Opelousas High School from1965 until 1974 where he established atradition of dominant track and field teamswhich still exists today. After beingappointed as head coach in 1970,Johnson's Opelousas teams dominatedthe Class AAAA state ranks like no otherteam in Louisiana, winning state titles in1971 and 1972 and finishing as state run-ners-up in 1973 and 1974. During thistime period Johnson worked with leg-endary coach Claude Paxton whocoached 1972 Olympic gold medalistRodney Milburn at Southern.

Johnson began his career at GrandValley (CO) High School on the westernslope of the Rocky Mountains where hecoached cross country, basketball andtrack for two years. His stay was high-lighted by a fourth place finish in the statebasketball tournament during his firstcampaign.

A devotee of the sport, Johnson con-tinues to be a source of information formany high school coaches who consultwith him on an individual basis. Johnsonwas one of the first coaches to becomeLevel I and Level II certified by USATrack and Field in the Sprints, Hurdles andRelays.

A native of Elmore City, Oklahoma,Johnson graduated from the University ofSouthwestern Louisiana where he was adistance runner on the cross country andtrack teams and also went out for football. In 1971 he returned to earn his master's insecondary education.

He is married to the former ElaineWaters of Lafayette with whom he has fourchildren: sons Dean and Kendon anddaughters Darla and Molly. He is a proudgrandfather, a member of the Church ofChrist and a devoted volunteer for theSpecial Olympics and several other char-ities.

Mike Heimerman’s technical expertiseand passion for coaching have been keyattributes in his rapid rise among the brightyoung faces in collegiate track and fieldcoaching circles.

They combine with his love for hisalma mater and his tremendous workethic, among other qualities, to result in hisbeing named head women’s track andfield coach at Northwestern State inAugust 2007.

Since Heimerman wrapped up hisown outstanding competitive career andjoined the coaching staff, NSU has consis-tently produced nationally-competitivethrowers.

Six of NSU’s last seven All-Americaawards have been won by Heimerman-trained competitors. He’s coached 13 ath-letes who have reached the NCAAOutdoor Championships. In the last fouryears, nine javelin throwers (three in2007) surpassed the NCAA Regionalqualilfying standard.

When Cody Fillinich won his thirdAll-America award in as many years at the2007 NCAA meet, it was also the ninthtime in 10 years that Northwestern hadeither a male or a female javelin throwerreach the NCAA Outdoors. All of the ath-letes have been Louisiana prep productsand four previously — Regina Roe, LatrellFrederick, Samantha Ford and Fillinich—won All-America honors by virtue of theirperformances at the national meet.

Ford reached the 12-woman USAOlympic Trials Finals in 2008.

Heimerman also helped freshmanTrecey Rew achieve national prominencein 2007. She qualified in two events for theUSA Junior Nationals and made theUSATFCCA (coaches’ association) All-Academic Team. Rew has broken schoolrecords in the shot and discus and won

conference titles in both events.Last year, among the nine NCAA

Regional qualifiers from Northwestern, fivewere throwers. In his first year as headwomen’s coach, Heimerman had fourregional qualifiers.

It’s not just technical knowledge thatmakes Heimerman a great coach – it’s hiscompetitive fire and his ablilty to instill thatquality in his athletes.

After capping his competitive careerwith an eighth-place finish at the 1998USA Outdoor Championships in the shotput, Heimerman emerged as a highlyregarded throws coach who has made amajor impact on NSU track and field histo-ry.

The 1996 Southland ConferenceOutdoor champion inthe shot put,Heimerman is creditedwith significantly shap-ing the record-shatter-ing careers of two-timeDemon All-AmericanLatrell Frederick, fifth atthe 2000 and 2001NCAA Championshipsin the javelin and the1999 USA JuniorChampion; 2003javelin All-AmericanSamantha Ford andUSATF Junior All-America javelin throw-ers Dawn Comeaux(2004) and RandyFauntleroy (2006).

Heavy scoring inthe shot put helped the2001 Demons win theSLC Indoor title. Bigpoint totals in the shotand javelin spearhead-ed the drive to the 2002SLC Outdoor crown forthe NSU men.

He’s also beeninstrumental in helpingproduce NSU’s first-

ever men’s freshman All-American inFillinich, who earned All-America honorsafter placing 10th at the 2005 NCAAChampionships. He also finished secondat the USA Junior Track and FieldChampionships and fourth at the Pan AmJunior Games. Fillinich repeated as an All-American at the 2006 NCAA Outdoors andimproved his PR by more than 12 feet. Hewent seven feet longer in 2007 and fin-ished fourth at the NCAAs, best for theDemons since 1993.

A junior college All-American atHutchinson (Kan.) CC, Heimerman, 35,is a Wichita, Kan. native.

Dean Johnson 12th season, 3rd since 2003

Among the nation’s most highly regarded horizontal jumps coaches, Dean Johnson is in his third sea-son back on the track and field staff at his alma mater.

Head women’s track and field coach for nine seasons, Johnson left the NSU staff after the 2003 sea-son to take a teaching and coaching position at adjacent Natchitoches Central High School, where three

of his five daughters were attending. He remains a teacher at NCHS, having seen a fourth daughter reach high school. He is the son of venerable head men’s track and field coach Leon Johnson, and while he’s worked with his father for

most of the past two decades since competing for him, Dean has risen from the formidable shadow of his dad’s accom-plishments and forged a name for himself in the sport.

Coaching two Olympic triple jumpers will do that for you – USA team members LaMark Carter in 2000 and Kenta Bellin 2004 and 2008. Bell told reporters after qualifying for his second Olympics that in his training, he uses the strategy“WWDD” -- “what would Dean do?”

Johnson’s expertise helped the NSU men win seven Southland Conference titles from 1992-2002 while he workedwith the heavy-scoring jump stable for the Demons.

As head women’s coach, he guided Lady Demon teams to their best-ever point totals in Southland Conference cham-pionship competition – 112 for third place, best in school history, in 1997; 84 points (fourth place) in 1998; and 108 pointsfor third place in 1999. The 2000 squad was also third place, scoring 97 points.

Johnson has earned national recognition through USA Track and Field. He was certified as a Level Two Coach in thesprints, hurdles and relays in 1988 and in 1994 received Level Two certification in the multi-events. He has also been partof a select group of jump coaches invited to attend USA Track and Field’s elite jumps seminars for long and triple jumpers, and has spoken to state coaching clinics in Louisiana and Missouri.

The 44-year-old is a DeRidder native and DHS graduate. He has five daughters: Loren, Keagan, Lindsey, Morgan andLillie.

Walter P. Ledet Track Complex

The Northwestern State track team competed on a cinder oval in old Demon (Football) Stadium until the early 1970s, when the stadium underwent major renovations.A new facility exclusively for track and field was constructed adjacent to the football stadium and opened in 1977. The track was resurfaced in 1987 and 1995, butdrainage problems near the third turn resulted in damage that prevented its use for home meets from 2002-06, although NSU was able to train at the track for all butone fall. The facility underwent a redesign, relocating some event venues and enhancing others, with installation of a world-class track, and reopened for competitionfor the 2007 season. The complex is named after legendary NSU athlete and coach Walter Ledet. Ledet was the first All-American athlete in the history of NorthwesternState University, making the All-American football team in 1938. After his graduation, he became an assistant football and track coach, then was named the head trackcoach in 1952 and built a program which dominated the state for more than a decade. He guided the Demons to five straight Gulf States Conference chamionshipsfrom 1953-57. He retired as track coach in 1964. He was among the inaugural class of inductees for the Graduate ‘N’ Club Hall of Fame and was elected to theLouisiana Sports Hall of Fame in 1995. He was also selected as a member of the NSU Top 100 Football Players of the Century this past fall.

Marking the 25th anniversary of Northwestern State's 1981 NCAA 4x100 meter relay vic-tory, coach Jerry Dyes and the four All-American sprinters on the fabled team wereenshrined on Oct. 28, 2006 in the Graduate N Club Hall of Fame, the highest honorNorthwestern affords its former athletes and coaches. Pictured, left to right, are Dyes,Mark Duper, Victor Oatis, Carolyn Delaney, widow of Joe Delaney, and Mario Johnson. Inthe 1981 race, the Demons were an obvious crowd favorite, lining up against Georgia,Tennessee, Arizona State, San Jose State, Florida State, Arizona, Oklahoma State andBaylor in the final.

University Administration

Dr. Randall J. WebbNorthwestern State President

Dr. Randall J. Webb never misses a chanceto tell people about the good things happening atNorthwestern State University. And Webb hasbeen responsible to many of those accomplish-ments. Webb became NSU's 17th president inJuly 1996 and is the second-longest servingpresident in the university's 125-year history.

During Webb's tenure, enrollment exceeded10,000 students for the first time, peaking at10,505 students in the fall of 2004. The universi-ty also set records for total graduates in an aca-

demic year. With the implementation of selective admissions in the fall of 2005, the

academic preparation of freshmen students has increased considerably.Overall enrollment initially decreased after the implementation of selectiveadmissions, but has begun to increase again.

Northwestern has improved its academic programs while attracting bet-ter-prepared students. The average ACT score of students has risen underWebb's tenure, and student leaders are choosing NSU in large numbers. The university has dramatically increased the number of high school vale-dictorians and salutatorians among first-time freshmen.

While Webb has been president, Northwestern has increased the level ofactive external grant and contract funding from federal, state and privatesources to approximately $20,000,000 annually.

The university raised more than $34 million from alumni, friends, support-ers, and private industry in its first-ever capital campaign, which exceededits $18.84 million goal by more than $15 million. A new capital campaign, inhonor of Northwestern's 125th anniversary, is now underway.

The university has received donations or pledges for its first three $1 mil-lion endowed chairs. Northwestern also has 34 endowed professorshipsworth $100,000 each.

NSU has also moved boldly to deliver instruction to students whereverthey are. Under Webb, the university has become a state and regionalleader in bringing classes to students by compressed video and theInternet. The university offers over twenty degree programs via the Internetand is looking to add more programs in the future. More than half of the stu-dents at Northwestern take an electronic class.

Under Webb, the university has modernized and improved its facilities. A$6.9 million Wellness, Recreation, and Activity Center was completed in thecenter of the campus on the site of the old Intramural Building. Projects torenovate Morrison Hall, the Family and Consumer Sciences Building andWilliamson Hall were also completed. West Caspari Hall was demolishedand funding has been received to reconstruct West Caspari as a three-story, one-stop center for student services. Plans call for renovating EastCaspari Hall in the future. Northwestern has also built University PlacePhases I and II, providing on-campus students with modern residence facil-ities that best meet their needs.

Additional projects include replacement of the entire underground electri-cal distribution system and the steam distribution system and the improve-ment of drainage and replacement of the turf at Turpin Stadium.

A one-time walk-on center for the Northwestern football team as anundergraduate, Webb has been one of the most avid supporters of the uni-versity's athletic programs.

Since returning to the Northwestern campus in 1989, Webb has beenactive as a donor and volunteer. In 1994, he oversaw a successfulNorthwestern Athletic Association board of directors and served on the NSUAthletic Council. In 1995-1996, Webb was in charge of the Athletic IntegritySubcommittee for the university's NCAA Certification Self-Study.

He served on the NCAA Division I Board of Directors and the prestigiousand powerful NCAA Executive Council, which oversees all major policydecisions by the governing body for major college sports. The Board ofDirectors enacted major academic reforms during his tenure.

A 1965 graduate of Northwestern in mathematics and business educa-tion, Webb earned a master of science in mathematics from NSU in 1966.He received a doctorate in education from the University of SouthernMississippi in 1971 with a concentration in mathematics and research.

Webb was a member of the faculty at Longwood College in Farmville,

Va., from 1966 until 1974. From 1974 until 1976, he was the director ofHigher Education and Teacher Certification in the Louisiana Department ofEducation.

In 1976, Webb moved to Southeastern Louisiana University where heserved as director of institutional research and EEO officer from 1976 until1983 and as registrar and a part-time faculty member in mathematics from1983 until 1989.

Webb returned to NSU in 1989 as dean of Instruction and GraduateStudies and professor of mathematics. In that position, he exercised cam-pus-wide responsibility for policy development, planning, advancement, andreview of both graduate andundergraduate programs. While Webb was in that role, graduate enrollmentincreased by 35 percent andinternal funding for facultyresearch increased by 200percent.

As dean, Webb proposedthe concept for NSU's suc-cessful FreshmanConnection Program. He alsoserved as a member of thewriting team for a grant pro-posal that resulted in a fiveyear $1.7 million Title III grantto improve student retention. The University has been the beneficiary ofadditional Title III grants in the ensuing years.

Webb chaired the Steering Committee for Northwestern's Self-Study forthe Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

Webb led the effort to locate both Boys and Girls State on theNatchitoches campus of Northwestern. These activities have benefited theUniversity and the community and have generated increased interest inNorthwestern among the student leaders who participate.

He has also been active in the community as a member of the board ofdirectors of the Natchitoches Chamber of Commerce. Webb was a memberof the Association for the Preservation of Historic Natchitoches, theNatchitoches Historic Foundation, and the Natchitoches-NorthwesternSymphony Society.

Webb and his wife Brenda have two daughters, both honor graduates ofNorthwestern. Tamara and her husband, former Demon All-American pitch-er Reggie Gatewood, are the parents of two children: Tyler and Ava. Laurenis married to former Demon baseball player Nick Simokatis, and they havetwo sons: Nicholas and Benjamin.

Jerry Pierce is the Cal Ripken of the NorthwesternState athletic program.

Day after day, year after year, Pierce is in the lineup, fielding his position with aplomb, and delivering at theplate, knocking a ball out of the park from time to time butalways taking an understated profile, seeing himself as arole player.

Beginning his 43rd year on the university's staff, Pierce's impact on NSU andthe city of Natchitoches can't be measured as easily as Ripkin's Baseball Hall ofFame statistics, but they are equally indelible.

He begins his 18th year as vice president of external affairs at Northwestern. Asignificant aspect of his job is oversight of intercollegiate athletics. Pierce worksclosely with athletic director Greg Burke, associate AD Donnie Cox and all NSUcoaches and staff members to keep Northwestern athletics competing at a cham-pionship level week after week, month after month and year after year.

Well before moving into the executive position, Pierce had already served hisalma mater, adopted hometown and state with distinction. In his role as vice pres-ident, he oversees university operations in athletics, alumni and development, public and media relations and assists President Dr. Randall J. Webb in govern-mental affairs activities. Many of those duties were his since the 1970s as heworked under four previous presidents as Northwestern advanced from NAIA toNCAA College Division to NCAA Division I athletic status in 1977.

A 1961 graduate of Northwestern, Pierce served as trainer for the Demon foot-ball team during his college years, working closely with legendary coach JackClayton. After earning his journalism degree, Pierce went to work for the NewOrleans Times Picayune, serving as a reporter and editor. He was named exec-utive sports editor at the age of 24.

In 1965, he chose to raise his two sons in Natchitoches and returned to NSUas sports information director. He was promoted to news bureau director twoyears later and assumed additional responsibilities in athletics, alumni affairs andother areas through the years.

He founded, in 1972, the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame facility in PratherColiseum on the NSU campus, providing a home for an entity created in 1958.He established annual induction activities that remain in place nearly fourdecades later, and served as director of the Hall for 19 years until his promotionto vice president forced him to step aside from the volunteer post.

He helped guide Northwestern into three athletic conferences (Trans America,1979; Gulf Star, 1983; Southland, 1987) and NCAA Division I status in 1977. Heis a past president of the Southland and has served the conference through otheroffices and committee positions.

In 1994, he was named one of Louisiana's 20 most influential sports figures bythe Times-Picayune. Also on the list were New Orleans Saints owner TomBenson, LSU athletic director Joe Dean and basketball coach Dale Brown, andGrambling football coaching legend Eddie Robinson.

His salesmanship and managerial skills were instrumental in convincing Tri-Star Productions to film the 1989 smash hit movie Steel Magnolias, with an all-star cast including Julia Roberts, Sally Field and Dylan McDermott inNatchitoches and on the NSU campus. The movie's impact on tourism inNatchitoches continues to resonate more than a decade later.

Pierce is regarded as one of the most effective legislative liaisons forLouisiana's higher education system. He is also a popular after dinner speakerand master of ceremonies who has spoken at hundreds of events since 1965.

Pierce has been on regional champion and national finalist USTA tennis teamsas a player and coach.

Pierce and his wife Regina, a teacher, live on Cane River Lake in Natchitoches. He has two sons, Randy and Rick, both NSU graduates; and three grandchildren, twins Evan and Amanda, 19, and Miranda, 8, and two stepchildren, Nicholas andNatalie.

Athletic Administration

In the midst of his 14th year as director of ath-letics at Northwestern State, Greg Burke seesemerging opportunities for unprecedented suc-cess for the Demons and Lady Demons built part-ly from a foundation of many landmark achieve-ments during his tenure as AD.

Athletics director at Northwestern sincespeaking at the annual NSU/Independence BowlKickoff Luncheon on August 29, 1996, Burke is

the longest-serving AD at any Louisiana institution. He has steered NSU athletics to many of its greatest

accomplishments while overseeing a program that hasfielded championship caliber teams in nearly all of theschool's NCAA Division I sports.

There have been 22 Southland Conference champi-onships; 16 teams in postseason play; 50 national awardwinners, most either All-America athletes or Academic All-America recipients; and three Olympic competitors.

NSU in 2004-05 became the first (and remains theonly) Southland Conference member in the league's fivedecades of history to sweep football, men's basketball andbaseball championships in the same athletic year. It'sbeen done only once in Southeastern Conference history,by Alabama in 1933-34, and only four times in Big TenConference history, the last time by Michigan State in1979-80.

Those accomplishments have come with one of themore modest athletic budgets in the state and conference.Burke's management skill and fundraising ability havebeen pivotal.

Facility enhancements have been a main focus over the past couple ofyears. Beginning with the installation of a $1.1 million Mondo surface trackin Spring 2007, NSU athletic facilities have recently undergone nearly $6million worth of improvements. Burke generated a $2 million series of spon-sorships for new scoreboards installed for 2008-09 at all NSU athletic ven-ues and spearheaded the $700,000 Second Century Circle fencing projectfor athletic venues. The installation of the new artificial turf playing field thissummer has helped create more than $1 million of additional renovations toTurpin Stadium.

Burke has displayed a remarkable ability to hire dynamic head coaches, including several whose success at Northwestern State has propelled themto national prominence in subsequent positions.

Some of his best hires remain on staff at NSU. Two Burke coaching hires had Northwestern in NCAA Tournament play

in their second seasons and have been back to postseason since.Basketball coach Mike McConathy was hired in 1999 after 16 seasons

as a junior college head coach. In his 10 years, the Demons have reachedthe conference tournament championship game six times, winning twice tomake the school's first two NCAA Tournament appearances. Most memo-rable was the stunning last second win over Big Ten champion Iowa in thefirst round of the 2006 tournament. That same year, Burke also broke newground by generating private backing for the first long-term guaranteedcoaching contract in school history for McConathy.

Women's soccer coach Jimmy Mitchell has taken three teams to theNCAA playoffs, making NSU the only Louisiana university to have multipleappearances. Dramatic facility enhancements have occurred in his eightseasons and Mitchell has been rewarded with a multi-year contract.

Burke also picked head coaches who have subsequently been hired byFlorida, Missouri, Kentucky, Mississippi State and Wichita State.

He recently landed LSU co-defensive coordinator Bradley Dale Pevetoto be the Demons' new football coach. Peveto and his staff promptly signeda 2009 recruiting class ranked No. 1 nationally in the Football ChampionshipSubdivision by Rivals.com recruiting analysts.

From his first day on the job, Burke has stressed the importance of hav-ing a balanced athletic program. To that end, tremendous competitivestrides have been made in women's athletics under his guidance. The NSUsoccer program was the first one in Louisiana ever to reach the NCAATournament. Softball has made three NCAA Tournament appearances.Volleyball has set attendance records and made its best-ever showings inconference play in each of the past four years.

While on-field success by Demon and Lady Demon teams has been asource of pride for NSU supporters, Burke is equally proud of the tone whichhas been set within the NSU athletic program as it relates to academic suc-

cess. In February, 2005, NSU led all state public universities in the NCAA'sinitial Academic Progress Rates report, which measures the job Division Iathletic programs are doing to help advance their student-athletes towardgraduation. NSU has continued to sparkle in subsequent APR reports, withthe men's basketball team ranking in the top 10 percentile in the country in2006 and women's soccer sharing the national lead in 2007. In addition,NSU led all state public schools and was second in the SouthlandConference in the most recently released NCAA Graduation Success Ratereport.

In 2005, Burke was one of three recipients of the All-America FootballFoundation's Gen. Robert R. Neyland Outstanding Athletic Director Awardand that same year, was also tabbed as one of two Natchitoches ParishCenla Newsmakers of 2005 by the Alexandria Town Talk newspaper's edi-torial staff.

He received the 2006 “Outstanding Alumni Award” from his alma mater,Marlington High School in Alliance, Ohio, recognizing hiscommunity service and professional achievements. Burkebecame one of only 21 alumni honored since the awardwas instituted in 1982.

In June 2006, he was a featured speaker and panelistat the National Association of Collegiate Athletic Directorsconvention in New Orleans, addressing members of theCollege Athletic Business Managers of America and alsoparticipating in a panel discussion of "Fundraising from anAthletic Director's Perspective" speaking to the NationalAssociation of Athletic Development Directors.

Since 2007, Burke has been a member of the prestigiousNCAA Championships/Sports Management Cabinet, a 49-person panel which makes recommendations to the NCAABoard of Directors on key issues facing Division I athletics.

He previously served a four-year term on the NCAADivision I Football Issues Committee (1999-2002) and con-currently served a term on the eight-member NCAA FCSCommittee that administers the national playoffs. Since hiscommittee term expired, Burke has served as a site super-

visor for Football Championship Subdivision playoff games across thenation and he is regarded as one of the country's premiere advocates ofFCS football. He currently is third vice-president of the FCS AthleticDirector's Association.

In 2004, NSU received the highest possible rating, "fully certified," fromthe National Collegiate Athletic Association, affirming that Northwesternoperates its athletic program in substantial conformity with operating princi-ples adopted by the NCAA Division I membership.

Burke is a past president of the Natchitoches Kiwanis Club and remainsactive in that civic group. He has also been part of the steering committeefor the Natchitoches Christmas Festival and is a former president of theNatchitoches Area Jaycees. He is involved with the American HeartAssociation.

He and his wife, Susu, a Natchitoches native, NSU graduate and ele-mentary teacher, have a 15-year-old daughter, Catherine, who is a sopho-more at St. Mary's High School.

One of the most accomplished student-athletes ever at NorthwesternState, two-time football All-America center William Broussard returned tohis alma mater in February 2007 as the Director of External Relations,

coordinating fundraising activities through the Athletic Association and Demon VictoryFund.

Known for his avid and tireless promotion of NSU Athletics, Broussard has represent-ed the department as Director of External Relations and planned or helped organize hun-dreds of events to promote Demon Athletics.

After re-branding the annual fund campaign the Demon Victory Fund (DVF) in 2007,the DVF enjoyed its most successful year up to that point. The 2008-09 DVF, with theassistance of a newly re-organized Board of Directors, once again broke the annual recordfor total revenues, number of Athletic Association members, and Select 100 Members onthe way to establishing a new benchmark for annual, unrestricted support of the NSUAthletic Department. Under Broussard’s guidance, the NSU Athletic Association has setthree consecutive annual total attainment records, secured the largest scholarship endow-ment and largest planned gift in the history of NSU Athletics.

In the 2007-08 year, the NSU Athletic Association established or tied several annualrecords under Broussard’s guidance, including annual records for total operating rev-enues, gift-in-kind donations, number of commitments to the Endowed ScholarshipProgram (8), and an annual record for corporate sales and corporate licensing revenuesgenerated by Athletic Association colleague Ryan Holloway.

The 2008-09 was a tremendous success as well, with the Endowed Scholarship Fundadding 6 commitments, the Second Century Campaign crossing the $100K plateau of pri-vate support, and the NSU Athletic Association Board of Directors generating over $186Kof funding for NSU Athletics.

Castle's winning personality and her strong organizational and time management skillshave been showcased in her new position, along with her ability to adapt to the constantchallenges in managing athletic facilities for a wide range of events. She has assumed the title of assistant director of game operations for NSU athletics, using her abil-ity to interact effectively with visiting coaches, game officials, fans, and NSU staff andcoaches to great benefit to enhance the home game experience at Northwestern State.

ty. A three-year letterwinner after transferring from UL-Lafayette, Castle earned Easton All-America honors in 2004, 2005, and 2006.
