2010 was definitely wild as state elections nationwide resulted in a new power in Congress. In 2010 saw a new and more conser- vative Republican sect take shape and back up many political op- ponents for the Democrats. The Republican Party faction came to be known as the Tea Party. The Midterm Elections in November proved vital as they are a preview into the National Elections of 2012. The 2010 Midterm Elec- tions did prove significant as the voters replaced the Democrats in the House of Representatives but left the Democrats with the major- ity in the Senate. A few Tea Party members won the Midterm Elec- tion highlighting some of the voter discontent. In Nevada, Kentucky, and Delaware, the incumbent Sen- ators were up against the Republi- cans in the preliminaries, and later on the Tea Party candidates would be up against the Democrats. However, Nevada remained a blue state with Harry Reid and Dela- ware also remained in the hands of Democrats. In Kentucky and Florida, Tea Party members were victorious in becoming Congress members. As congressional incum- A Year in Political Stalemates by Roxana Sierra bents and challenges campaigned, the president did a cross-country tour trying to raise support for the Democrats. Obama came to southern California and rallied to thousands of students on the USC campus, including some of our very own Bravo journalism staff. In California, it proved useful as the people elected Senator Bar- bra Boxer and new Jerry Brown Democrat’s California’s governor- elect. The results were stagger- ing as a wave of red consumed the nation in the House of Repre- sentatives elections. The Republi- cans gained a vast number of seats resulting in 241 total seats out of 435, giving them the majority and a new House speaker, John Boeh- ner. Obama frustrated by the re- publican gain. The elections were over and the Lame Duck Congress de- cides to go out with a bang! Before their winter recess, the Democrats who controlled House and Sen- ate were able to pass a vote on the Don’t Ask Don’t tell policy affect- ing the many homosexuals serving in the army and those who have been released because of their sex- ual orientation. The Lame Duck Congress tried to pass the Dream Act, lifting the spirits of thousands of immigrant students whose hopes were crushed when the act failed to pass; it will be a long time before the House will vote on it again. There was also some relief to those who volunteered and aided the res- cues in the aftermath of 9/11 when a bill passed saying they would be compensated. As January rolled around, many states gained new seats in the House of Representatives; California was not among them. The Republicans who dominated the House got straight to work. Their first task was to repeal the health care reform act. However, the deadly shootings in Tucson delayed that vote; after a week of delay the new House passed the repeal and the bill was sent to the Senate after heated debates on both sides. All that is left to do is to wait for what may come ahead in the economy in a rut, with a high unemployment rate, and a trillion- dollar deficit that is forcing many to penny pinch. There are some signs of a shifting tone shown dur- ing the state of the Union Address when both party members sat side by side, symbolizing cooperation and a middle ground. Let’s see if the Republicans make a change that the Democrats couldn’t. House Speaker John Boehner (photos.upi.com) veteranstoday.com worldcorrespondents.com
