The song is driven by steel drums and ska with references to Jamaican slang -- specifically males who are continually in trouble. After all, who doesn’t love a bad boy? Ninth place goes to “Bad Romance” by Lady Gaga. Beyond its 315 million (yes, million) views on YouTube and worldwide multi-platinum status, “Bad Romance” reached a more than worthy standing with its grand intro and catchy rah-rah-ah-ah-ahs. Originally composed of two violin and one vihuela player, the group has now grown to include various trumpet players, guitarron players, and an increasingly amount of guitar players. The intention to commence a mariachi at Bravo was brought to Mr. Flores’ attention by three students in their sophomore year. Stacy Lopez (‘11), Alyssa Luna (‘11), and Yesenia Martinez (‘11) were initially part of a mariachi outside of school campus. A mariachi at school would be a way to bring their love for music to Bravo. 2010: Trends in Music by Maggie Esule Every year, there seems to be a few factors separating the music of today from past years. The year 2010 was no different; bringing to the forefront techno beats, auto-tune, boys with acoustic guitars, and even a few select groups that made the jump from unknown to rising stars. Techno made a huge appearance in many of the songs played on the radio. It was a nonstop party with many artists making techno a part of their sound. The Black Eyed Peas did it in their album The Beginning with hits like “The Time (Dirty Bit).” Daft Punk’s work on the Tron Legacy soundtrack was another highlight in the music scene. Musicians like Katy Perry, Mike Posner, Taio Cruz, and Rihanna have also taken full advantage of the trend. In fact, a good majority of songs played on the radio sounded like they were made for the club. Not far off from the techno fad, auto-tune was also used generously by artist. Some used it to better their voice; others (who sing perfectly without auto-tune) used it as just a cool addition to their sound. Artists spanning from Ke$ha to Usher used auto-tune on their tracks. Possibly the only downside to auto-tune is the lack of real, raw, untainted voices and variety. Another trend in music in 2010 has been the handful of male musicians armed with nothing more than a sweet voice, even sweeter lyrics, and an acoustic guitar. Bruno Mars is a prime example of a guy who knows how to write a love song. He started out writing and being featured on songs for other artists. However, the success of his album Doo-Wops and Hooligans has made him a star all on his own. Some groups and solo artists that were not well known also made it pretty big in 2010. Bands like Florence and the Machine, Phoenix, Matt & Kim and solo artist, Janelle Monae have made a mark, especially amongst teens and young adults. Offering a fresh sound, bands like these are an escape from all the techno and auto-tune played on the radio. Although still catchy and danceable, their songs feature meaningful lyrics and raw, unaltered voices. naijamayor.com As the mariachi program progressed, the group began to reach a selected number of interested students. The group began performing at school-related activities, such as pep- rallies and Bravo assemblies. After a more broadened repertoire, the group began offering its services to students in school. The Jackson family signed a 250 million dollar contract with Sony Music to release his unreleased songs. There are over a hundred unheard compilations that go as far back as the 1980’s, including songs that didn’t make the cut for his album Bad. Michael Jackson was still very much with us in 2010 and will carry on this following year. His music will support the image of what real pop is and will continue to influence modern-day artists.

2010’s Best of Booksby Jacqueline Romero Attention all book lovers, a new year means a fresh start for writers and authors to fall into a dream full of words, language and connotations! Nevertheless,2010 ended with successful copies of the best stories. These are a few of the most read and top rated books of our new decade. One of the most praised books was from the Hunger Game trilogy by Suzanne Collins, including Catching Fire and MockingJay. Suzanne writes the very dramatic life-or-death plot, leaving her readers craving for more. The adrenaline of each book is a page turner that was definitely worth reading in 2010. Other famous readings were created from one of the most admired authors: Nicholas Sparks. Two of his recent published books, Dear John and The Last Song, were even made into movies during the year of 2010. His novels are filled with the upmost passionate love affairs, while it also, both heals and crushes your heart. Other readings that were also produced as a film were the hit graphic novels, Scott Pilgrim. Despite the fact, that these have a more comic-like structure, they were very intriguing. All six graphic novels will keep you laughing and terribly entertained. I must say, if you loved the movie, the books will blow you away. Another anticipated novel during the year was The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest by Stieg Larsson. This book was the last from Larsson’s famous trilogy. One of the most interesting details was that Larsson was originally a journalist and activist who died of a heart attack and had written these books for fun. His manuscripts were eventually found after his death, and published over time. These books are definitely worth taking notice. Another fantastic book filled with allusions, classic drama and alternative history. This book is called The Infinities by John Banville, which is narrated by the god Hermes. It’s a complex literary fiction, and only the lucky ones will be able to grasp it. Finally, one of the best books in 2010 was a story called Super Sad True Love Story by Gary Shteyngart. The book begins with, “Dear Diary, Today I’ve made a major decision: I am never going to die.” This wonderful novel uncovers love, loss and mortality. It’s both super sad and super funny, and highly recommended! Hopefully, you’ll be able to read every one of these recommended books of 2010. You’re never too late to start a book; unless, it’s a school assignment.

Memorable 2010 Art exhibits of Los Angelesby Crystal Rivas

Art is constantly changing and with so many new and upcoming artists, let’s see which had the best exhibitions of 2010. Here are a few top art exhibitions that were showcased and can still be found in Los Angeles, CA. A very famous on-site exhibit that is featured right outdoors to the LACMA museum is L.A. Icons: Urban light and Watts Towers. This exhibition is very entertaining if you run through and just look at the detail. Although the art piece may seem very basic most L.A. residents have visited them. These are also famous and can be seen in some new movies. The Urban Light is a sculpture by Ball Nogues studio, and artwork by students from Charles White that were done in collaboration with Pato Hebert, a Los Angeles based artist. This exhibit has encouraged many students to talk about monuments and open their eyes to photography. For all the Sanrio fans, yes there was a Sanrio Small Gift Art exhibit in Los Angeles and Miami. In honor of their 50th anniversary, Sanrio did a two-part Small Gift which was like a fair but had unique rooms installed with featured artwork from 50 artists. The artists had each of their creative works inspired by the Sanrio characters. Sadly, this exhibit has ended and was only found last year. MOCA, the Museum of Contemporary Art has also opened The Artist’s Museum. It showcases 146 artists who have helped shape Los Angeles artistic dialogue in the past 30 years. This exhibit features over 250 works that represent diversity and uniqueness of the Los Angeles community. It also features highlights from legendary artists, alongside new and emerging local artists. It includes various types of art such as, sculptures, music, performance, and film. As all may know there are constantly L.A Art walks, which feature art and music. They feature full day performances and exhibitions at nearby galleries. This is where all residents can gather to see featuring exhibits with free admission from LACMA. Although this is not very different it is acknowledged, because not only do you see one exhibit but many. This is an every year art walk, and is memorable every year. Let’s see what this year will bring of new art exhibits!
