An important part of every athletic program is the care and treatment student-athletes receive from its sports medicine staff. For well over a decade, Tallahassee Community College Athletics has enjoyed a strong relationship with Tallahassee Orthopedic Clinic (TOC), who provides a certified athletic trainer, or ATC, to care for the Eagles’ more than 70 student-athletes. An ATC is an individual who has completed a four-year degree in a limited-entry Sports Medicine program and has passed a national exam that enables that person to become certified by the National Athletic Trainer’s Association Board of Certification. Once certified, the individual can provide professional care to the population of student-athletes under the following scope of practice:

Provide care and educate individuals about prevention of athletic injuries; Recognition, evaluation and immediate care of injuries; Rehabilitation and reconditioning of athletic injuries Health care administration Professional development and responsibilities

Tallahassee Community College is privileged to have David Young, MS, ATC, LAT, CSCS, on its athletic staff as Head ATC. Young is no stranger to TCC or Panhandle Conference athletics, having joined the Eagles’ staff in 2008, following a four-year stint as Head ATC with Chipola College. As he was at Chipola, Young is an adjunct instructor at TCC, his second such tour of duty at the College, having also served in the role from 2002-04. Young earned his bachelor’s degree in the Spring of 1999 from the University of North Florida. While at UNF, he gained extensive experience through internships with UNF women’s soccer, Jacksonville University baseball, Bolles High School football, Baptist/St. Vincent Sports Medicine Rehabilitation and the Jacksonville Cyclones, a semi-pro soccer team. Later that year, Young relocated to Tallahassee, where he joined the team at TOC and began his master’s studies in sports administration at Florida State University. Upon completion of his master’s degree in 2002, he served as an adjunct faculty member in TCC’s Division of Technology and Professional Programs until accepting the Head ATC position at Chipola in 2004. While in Tallahassee, Young has worked with Rickards High School, the Tallahassee Tiger Sharks hockey organization and the Tallahassee Thunder of the Arena II Football League. As part of his responsibilities with TCC, Friday nights still find Young on the sidelines of football fields across Florida’s Panhandle and Big Bend regions. He also assists with TOC’s Sports Medicine Outreach Program. Young and his wife, Tisa, are the proud parents of a daughter, Riley, and step-daughter, Paige. The couple also enjoys time with their Labrador Retrievers, Kea and Babe.

14 TCC EAGLE BASEBALL 2010 MEDIA GUIDE

W hen Tallahassee Community College introduced Mike McLeod on September 4, 1990, it had a rookie head coach, no facilities and a program that had been dormant for 20 years. Fast-forward to 2010 and McLeod, now entering his 20th season at the helm of the Eagles, is one of the game’s most respected coaches and TCC

boasts one of the country’s elite two-year programs. After fielding a club level team in 1991, the Eagles began play in the National Junior College Athletic Association as a member of the Florida Community College Activities Association’s Panhandle Conference one year later. During his tenure at the helm of TCC Baseball, McLeod has guided the Eagles to four outright Panhandle Conference Championships, winning the title in 1995, 1999, 2004 and 2009, while being named Co-Champions in 2002. His teams have a made a total of seven trips to the FCCAA Tournament. McLeod has also been named Panhandle Conference Coach of the Year four times, receiving the award in each of TCC’s championships seasons (1995, 1999, 2004, 2009). Following a 39-16 mark in 2009, McLeod’s career coaching ledger stands at 669-307-4, a winning percentage of .683). Career win number 600 came on March 31, 2007, when the Eagles defeated North Florida Community College, 11-2. A lifelong resident of Tallahassee, McLeod graduated from Godby High School. His success as a standout prep pitcher for the Cougars served as the foundation to a successful pitching career. McLeod got his first taste of junior college baseball in 1974, as a player at Middle Georgia College in Cochran, Ga. In his only season with the Warriors, McLeod compiled an 8-2 record, authored two no-hitters and earned All-America honors from the NJCAA. McLeod returned to his hometown and Florida State University for the final three years of his collegiate career, where he went 12-3 and hurled a third career no-hitter. Though he was drafted twice, once by the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1974 and again by the New York Yankees in 1977, McLeod always seemed destined to take the coaching route. He spent six summers as a coach in the professional ranks — three in the Yankees' organization, two with the Montreal Expos and one with the Minnesota Twins. Upon graduating from FSU in 1977 with a bachelor's in criminology and a coaching certificate, McLeod played minor league baseball for three years in the Yankees' farm system. In 1982, McLeod accepted a position under legendary coach Mike Martin at FSU. It was during his eight-year stint (1982-89) as pitching coach with the Seminoles that McLeod earned his reputation as one of the nation’s premiere pitching instructors. His efforts played a large role in FSU’s rise to national prominence that included College World Series appearances in 1986, 1987 and 1989. As an assistant at FSU, McLeod was also part of seven straight Metro Conference Championship teams (1983-89). During his final season at FSU, his staff led the NCAA in earned run average.

An unlimited source of knowledge and top-level instruction, McLeod's commitment to his student-athletes is unparalleled. While at FSU, more than 30 of his pupils signed professional contracts and he is credited with the development of former Seminole baseball standouts Richie Lewis and 1986 Golden Spikes Award winner Mike Loynd. The commitment has continued at TCC, as over 100 players have continued their education and athletic careers at four-year schools. With the Eagles, McLeod has coached three NJCAA All-Americans (Mike Ziegler, 1999; A.J. Johnson, 2004; Shawn Pleffner, 2009). His TCC honor roll also includes more than 20 All-FCCAA selections, more than 90 All-Panhandle Conference picks and a pair of NJCAA Academic All-Americans—Jeffrey Garidel (2006) and Drew Johnson (2007, 2008). He has also sent five players to the Major Leagues — Ryan Freel, Brandon Jones, Mike Metcalfe, Juan Padilla (photo, right) and Mike Saunders. In 2008, Saunders suited up for Team Canada in the Beijing Olympics. McLeod’s coaching career has also included a couple of international opportunities. In 1989, he coached the Belgium Senior National Baseball Team as it prepared for the European Championship Tournament. In 2003, he was selected to serve as pitching coach for USA Baseball’s Junior National Team. McLeod’s efforts have not gone unnoticed. In 2002, he was part of the inaugural class of inductees into the Eagle Athletics Hall of Fame. Mike and his wife, Rose Marie, who was a cheerleader at FSU, have two children-daughter, Jennifer Marie, and son, Garrett , a former TCC baseball standout. Garrett and his wife, Carrie, a former track standout at Florida State University, are the proud parents of one-year old daughter Alena.

J im Hage, longtime assistant to head coach Mike McLeod, is in his 13th season as a member of the Eagles’ coaching staff.

Hage, the “Dean of Assistant Coaches” in the Panhandle Conference, serves as the Eagles’ dugout coach, assisting McLeod in all aspects of in-game coaching. Hage joined the TCC coaching staff in 1997 after serving in a similar capacity at Tallahassee’s North Florida Christian School. At NFC, he was an assistant coach for the Eagles’ 1995 State Championship team. Since arriving at TCC, Hage has been a part of three PC Championship teams (1999, 2004, 2009) while the 2000 squad advanced to the postseason as PC Runners-up. A native of Lakeland, Fla., Hage attended Kathleen High School and later played baseball for the Polk Community College Vikings.

B rad Jackson, a native of nearby Havana, Fla., is in his second year on the Eagles’ coaching staff. Jackson is the Eagles' Recruiting Coordinator but also assists in various

capacities on game day, including serving as the team's "defensive coordinator." You will also find Coach Jackson in the third base coaches' box from time to time. Jackson prepped at Tallahassee’s Florida High School, where he was part of the Seminole’s tradition-rich baseball program. After graduating in 2003, he continued his education and baseball career, first at former Panhandle Conference rival North Florida Community College (2004-05), where he competed against Coach McLeod's Eagles, then at Flagler College (2006-07). After earning his bachelor’s from Flagler College in political science, he joined the Saints’ coaching staff and worked with the hitters and infielders. Brad’s brother, Jason, is the Pitching Coach and Recruiting Coordinator at Florida Atlantic University.

A ngelo Nicolosi is in his second year on Tallahassee Community College’s coaching staff. He will work with the Eagles’ outfielders, catchers and hitters. Additionally, on game day, you’ll find Nicolosi in the first base coaches’ box.

After a successful debut on TCC's coaching staff in 2009, Nicolosi accepted a summer head coaching position with the nationally-renowned 15-and-under East Cobb Titans. He was later given the opportunity to become the organization's pitching coach and promptly guided his staff to a 3.36 ERA. He has since been asked to serve as head coach of the Rockville Express in the Cal Ripken Summer Collegiate League during summer 2010. Prior to his arrival at TCC, "Coach Angelo," as he is affectionately known by the Eagles' players, enjoyed a successful stint as both a player and coach at St. Thomas University in Miami, Fla. He was a member of the Bobcats’ baseball team from 2000-04, playing for coach Manny Mantrana. He began his collegiate career as a catcher but transitioned to a pitching role shortly thereafter. After earning his bachelor’s in sports administration from St. Thomas, Nicolosi got his shot at professional baseball in Turino, Italy. Playing for the Avigliana L’Ape’s, Nicolosi compiled a 2.01 ERA in 136 innings of work and was named the Most Valuable Player of the A-2 Series in 2005. Following almost two full seasons in Italy, Nicolosi decided to return to the States, and St. Thomas, to resume his education. While working on his M.B.A., he spent much of his free time serving as a volunteer assistant with the Bobcats’ baseball team.

D ean Palmer, a former Major League All-Star, returns for a second season as Tallahassee Community College's hitting instructor. Palmer, born and raised in Tallahassee, attended Florida High School, where he

was a standout on the diamond. Following his prep career, he was drafted by the Texas Rangers in the third round of Major League Baseball's 1986 Amateur Draft. Palmer spent parts of four seasons in the Rangers' farm system before making his Major League Debut with Texas on September 1, 1989 against the Kansas City Royals. Palmer's stellar major league career spanned 14 seasons (1989-2003), one that included time with Rangers, Royals and Detroit Tigers. In 1996, Palmer enjoyed, arguably, his finest season offensively. He batted a career-high .280 with 38 home runs and 107 RBI, helping the Rangers to the American League's Western Division Championship and the first postseason appearance in franchise history. Palmer was traded to the Royals during the 1997 season and a year later became an American League All-Star. In 1998, he batted .278 with 34 home runs and a career-high 119 RBI to earn a trip to baseball's Mid-Summer Classic. Following the season, he won the first of back-to-back AL Silver Slugger Awards. Palmer signed with Tigers as a free agent following the 1998 season. While with Detroit, he tied his career-high with 38 home runs in 1999 and posted the last two of three straight 100-RBI seasons, with 100 and 102 in 1999 and 2000, respectively. Palmer finished his major league career with a .251 batting average, 275 home runs and 849 RBI. He is still seventh on the Rangers' all-time home run list with 154 and his 451 RBI ranks 15th in team history.

W illiam “Boo” Taylor, a former Major League pitcher, is a third-year assistant on Tallahassee Community College's coaching staff and will work with the Eagles’ pitchers. Taylor, a native of nearby Monticello, Fla., played high school ball at Thomas County Central High School in Thomasville, Ga., then attended Abraham

Baldwin College in Tifton, Ga. His nephew, Austin, is a member of the 2009 Eagles. Drafted by the Texas Rangers in the second round of the 1980 amateur entry draft, at the age of 18, Taylor was originally slated to be a starting pitcher. However, he gradually developed into one of the top relief pitching prospects in all of baseball, culminating with his being named a Triple-A All-Star and the International League Reliever of the Year in 1993 while pitching for the Richmond Braves. After 14 years in the minors, he earned a spot on the Oakland Athletics’ Opening Day roster in 1994 and made his Major League Debut on April 5. As a rookie pitcher with the A’s, he appeared in 41 games, all in relief, and posted a record of 1-3 and 3.50 ERA. After missing the entire 1995 season, he returned to the A’s in 1996 and went 4-2 with a 4.33 ERA. By season’s end, he had moved into the A’s closer’s role, finishing with 17 saves. Over the next two-plus seasons, Taylor’s towering height (six-foot-eight) and side-armed delivery made him one of the game’s top firemen. In 1997, he appeared in a career-high 72 games and recorded 23 saves. A year later, in 70 games, he ranked eighth in the American League with a career-best 33 saves in 37 opportunities. He saved 26 games in 1999 before being traded to the New York Mets on July 31. Taylor appeared in 281 games for the A’s between 1994 and 1999. His 100 career saves is third-best in A’s franchise history behind only Hall of Fame pitchers Dennis Eckersley and Rollie Fingers. Taylor appeared in 18 games after joining the Mets in 1999. He signed a free agent contract with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays prior to the 2000 season and pitched in 17 games. He ended his major league career with the Pittsburgh Pirates, for whom he appeared in one game in 2001. In a professional career that spanned more than two decades, Taylor spent parts of seven seasons in the Major Leagues. His big league career totaled 317 appearances, a record of 16-28, 4.21 ERA, 100 saves and 307 strikeouts in 324.2 innings pitched. Of note, Taylor is one of the tallest players in baseball history. In fact, there have only been eight players in the Major Leagues taller than the six-foot-eight Taylor. Since retiring from professional baseball, Taylor has embarked on a successful coaching career. He led The Brookwood School to consecutive Georgia Independent School Association (GISA) Championships.

Eagle Athletics Hall of Fame 2004

Dr. Carl Nelson was the first head coach in Tallahassee Community College’s athletic history, guiding the Eagle Baseball program from 1967-71. In five seasons, he compiled a record of 62-46-1. His 1968 team, which finished 15-9, was held to less than ten runs on only four occasions. Dubbed "Murderers' Row," the lineup included four players who batted over .400. Following the 1969 season, he took his team to South America and won six out of eight games against international competition during a two-week tour in Colombia. Dr. Nelson was one of the original faculty members at, what was then known as, Tallahassee Junior College when it opened its doors in 1966 at Tallahassee’s Godby High School. From 1968-71, he also coached a golf team at the College. During his tenure at TCC, he was the primary Physical Education instructor and served as Chairman of Lifetime Sports. An innovator, Dr. Nelson introduced both the campus and community to the popular European system of community exercise known as Vita Par Cour, or, loosely translated, "run to live." In 1978, he brought that concept to life as the architect of the Fun Run, a 1.8-mile course for running, jogging, and sprinting. Dr. Nelson earned his bachelor’s and doctoral degrees from Florida State University, where he was a four-year letterman in baseball (1957-60) for coach Danny Litwhiler. As a freshman, he was a member of the 1957 Seminoles, who earned FSU’s first College World Series berth. He retired from TCC in 1993 and was inducted into the Eagle Athletics Hall of Fame in 2004.

When Tallahassee Community College revitalized its athletic program, it chose Tallahassee native Mike McLeod as the architect of its baseball program. A graduate of Godby High School and Florida State University, McLeod took the reins of the Eagle baseball program in September 1990. Following TCC’s 20-year hiatus from the sport, McLeod built the Eagle baseball program from the ground up. After playing a club level schedule in 1991, TCC returned to intercollegiate action a year later. During his tenure with the Eagles, he has had only one losing season, amassing over 600 victories during that time. McLeod’s Eagles had their breakthrough season in 1994, advancing to the Florida Community College Activities Association Tournament for the first time and finishing with a sparkling 42-11 record. The next season, TCC won its first Panhandle Conference Championship and McLeod received his first of three PC Coach of the Year Awards. A third straight FCCAA Tournament appearance followed in 1996. Three years later, the Eagles captured their second league championship and McLeod was again named PC Coach of the Year, a feat he would repeat following the 2004 and 2009 seasons. McLeod’s best season came in 2000, when TCC won a school-record 48 games on its way to a fifth trip to state. During the season, TCC earned a number three national ranking, the first time TCC had appeared in the NJCAA poll. His team was named Panhandle Conference Co-Champions in 2002 and won the league outright for a third time in 2004. McLeod, who served as Athletic Director during the 2001-02 year, has coached five major leaguers and three NJCAA All-Americans in addition to a plethora of all-conference and all-state players. Over 100 of his former players have continued their education and playing careers at four-year schools. More than 20 players have been selected in Major League Baseball’s annual draft while attending TCC. He was inducted into the Eagle Athletics Hall of Fame in 2002.

Tallahassee Community College outfielder A.J. Johnson capped a remarkable 2004 season when he was named the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division I Player of the Year by the American Baseball Coaches Association and Rawlings Sporting Goods. Johnson, who had previously been named Player of the Year in the Panhandle Conference as well as the state of Florida, became the Eagles’ first student-athlete to receive Player of the Year honors on the national level. In addition to being named National Player of the Year, he became the first player to be named First-team All-American. A native of Jacksonville, Fla., Johnson helped lead TCC to a 45-12 record, a No. 7 national ranking and its fourth Panhandle Conference Championship in 2004. As a sophomore, he established single-season records at TCC with an NJCAA-best 18 home runs and 88 runs batted in. Those numbers, along with a .372 batting average and a record .754 slugging percentage, earned him first-team All-FCCAA honors as well as first-team All-PC honors for a second consecutive season. On March 8, Johnson was named FCCAA Player of the Week. In six games during the voting period, he hit .520 (13-of-25) with five doubles, two triples, and four home runs—a 1.360 slugging percentage. He also scored 15 runs and drove in 15 runs during the Eagles’ 6-0 week. Johnson ended his TCC career as the school’s all-time leader in RBI (118) while his 22 home runs tied former standout Nick Rogers for the most in school history. The Pittsburgh Pirates selected Johnson in the sixth round of the 2004 First-Year Player Draft, assigning him to their Class A Short-Season affiliate in Williamsport, Pa. Baseball America also selected Johnson as the Best Athlete and Best Outfield Arm in the Pirates’ organization.

Established in 2001, the Eagle Athletics Hall of Fame honors participants in athletics who have made a major contribution to Tallahassee Community College. Those eligible for enshrinement include former student-athletes, coaches, and others who may not have participated directly in athletics but made a significant contribution to the College through personal time, effort, and interest. Additionally, teams who won state and/or national championships are eligible. The Hall of Fame inducted its inaugural class in April 2002 (pictured at bottom). On September 26, 2008, the seventh class of inductees were formally enshrined, bringing total membership in the Eagles’ most exclusive club to 23. The NJCAA is the governing body of intercollegiate athletics for two-year colleges. As such, its programs are designed to meet the unique needs of a diverse group of student-athletes who come from both traditional and non-traditional backgrounds and whose purpose in selecting a junior college may be as varied as their experiences before attending college. The purpose of the NJCAA is to promote and foster junior college athletics on intersectional and national levels so that results will be consistent with the total educational program of its members. TCC and all other members of the FCCAA compete as NJCAA Division I schools. TCC has one NJCAA Championship to its credit—the women’s softball team won the slow pitch national crown in 1994. In 2006, the men’s basketball advanced to the National Championship Game and brought home a runners-up finish after previously finishing third in the 1997 tournament. The women’s basketball team brought home a third-place finish in the 2001 tournament. As part of the Florida Community College Activities Association (FCCAA), the Panhandle is one of four conferences (the others are the Mid-Florida, Suncoast, and Southern) which make up Region VIII of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA). In addition to the PC’s six sports, the FCCAA competes in men’s and women’s golf, swimming and diving, women’s soccer, and women’s tennis. In basketball, baseball and softball, the FCCAA is also designated as Region VIII by the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA). Winners of the respective FCCAA Tournaments automatically qualify for the NJCAA Tournament. To date, TCC has captured four FCCAA Championships — slow pitch softball in 1994, men’s basketball in 1997 and 2006 and women’s basketball in 2001. Additionally, the College’s fast pitch softball team won the FCCAA’s Gulf District Championship in 2008 and thus qualified for the NJCAA Tournament. Stretching from the western tip of Florida’s Panhandle to the Big Bend, the Panhandle Conference, comprised of five schools, reaches more than 50,000 students annually. The diversity in the student population is as great as the communities in which the campuses are located. Connected by the Interstate 10 corridor, the Panhandle Conference has a presence in Florida’s nationally-known cities such as Pensacola, Panama City, and Tallahassee, as well as a pair of its hidden gems—Niceville and Marianna. The member schools of the Panhandle Conference are Chipola College (Marianna), Gulf Coast Community College (Panama City), Northwest Florida State College (Niceville), Pensacola Junior College and Tallahassee Community College. The Panhandle Conference fields teams in six different sports—men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, fast-pitch softball, volleyball, and cross country. One of the most competitive conferences in the nation, the Panhandle Conference is always home to some of the nation’s top teams and most gifted student-athletes. Since revitalizing its athletic program in 1990, Tallahassee Community College has captured a total of 13 Panhandle Conference Championships (three in softball, five in baseball, four in men’s basketball and one in women’s basketball).

The ‘10 Season Coaches Players Opponents History Record Book TCC

The TCC Eagle Boosters was established in 1999 and formally organized in October of 2000 to support Tallahassee Community College Athletics through volunteer and financial support. The TCC Eagle Boosters is dedicated to help reach the educational and athletic goals set forth by the TCC Athletic Department. The group also seeks to establish and promote goals and Booster projects, which tend to strengthen the ties between Boosters and the College, as well as the community. The TCC Eagle Boosters also meet for social purposes and recruit others interested in the success and future progress of athletics at Tallahassee Community College. The TCC Eagle Boosters have a number of exciting events each year, beginning with the annual Eagle Athletics Hall of Fame Banquet. The banquet, which takes place the final Friday in September, serves as the unofficial start to the athletic season. The banquet celebrates the athletic and academic accomplishments of TCC’s former student-athletes, as well as coaches, staff members, and contributors who have helped ensure the success of those to suit up for the Eagles. During home basketball games, the TCC Eagle Boosters Hospitality Room is open to Boosters and their guests. The Hospitality Room is a great forum to meet and fellowship with fellow Boosters. This season, the Boosters proudly welcome Wing Zone and Refreshment Services Pepsi of Tallahassee as its Hospitality Room Partners. Another annual event is the Fan Appreciation Day Cookout, held in the spring during a TCC Baseball/Softball doubleheader. It’s free and is held at the newly renovated pavilion located between the fields on Progress Drive. Booster memberships are available on six levels, some of which include discounted prices for TCC employees. Eagle Booster memberships are available for $50 ($25 for TCC employees); Blue Boosters, $75 ($50); Silver Boosters, $125 ($75); and Gold Boosters for $200. There is also a $10 membership for TCC students and $15 membership for members of the TCC Alumni Association. All Boosters receive reserved seating at home basketball games and are automatically subscribed to the TCC Eagle Boosters Newsletter, published monthly, as well as the TCC Sports Information mailing list, which provides press releases on all athletics events.
