Armed with a roster of four freshmanand four sophomores, the SoutheasternLouisiana women’s tennis team returned to theSouthland Conference Tournament for the sixthtime in the past seven years.

The Lady Lions finished the 2010 cam-paign with an 8-14 record and a 4-7 record inSouthland Conference play. Led by sopho-mores Audrey Chelini and Morgane Dadot,Southeastern took the first step towards return-ing to the Southland Conference elite. In recentyears, the Lady Lions won league regular sea-son titles in 2006, 2007 and 2008, while earn-ing the conference’s automatic bid in theNCAA Championships with tournament crownsin 2005, 2006 and 2007.

The last link to that recent run of suc-cess - multi-time All-Southland choice Iva

Velkovska – completed her eligibility in 2009.However, Southeastern head coach Jason

Hayes believes the foundation of Chelini,Dadot and freshman Camille Pilon has thepotential to help bring the program to similarheights in the future.

“We went through some growing painsearly in the season, but that was to be expect-ed with such a young team,” Hayes comment-ed. “I really liked what I saw from our team asthe season progressed. The attribute thatmade this group fun to coach was their workethic. They never gave up and always gavetheir best effort. That attitude combined withadded experience will help us greatly in thefuture.”

The strength of the Southeastern teamwas its play at the top half of the singles draw.

Chelini, who earned All-Louisiana honors forthe second straight season, moved to the No.1 position to replace Velkovska. The Bordeaux,France native finished with a 12-9 record and7-4 mark in league action.

Chelini was backed up by Dadot, whowas the team’s most improved player. After fin-ishing 10-10 as a freshman in 2009, theReunion, France product finished with a team-best 15-6 mark in singles action. Starting theseason at No. 4, Dadot gradually moved up toNo. 2 as the season progressed.

A pair of losses followed the win, butSoutheastern bounced back to win four of itsnext five matches in a key stretch of the sea-son. The important wins for the Lady Lions

were a pair of 5-2 triumphs over league rivalsNicholls and Stephen F. Austin. The win over SFA was particularly key, as theLady Lions bounced back from dropping thedoubles point for the only time during the sea-son. Down 1-0, Southeastern roared back withfive singles wins. Why SOUTHEASTERN?

Southeastern is the third largest university inLouisiana, offering 70 undergraduate and graduatedegree programs. All of Southeastern's graduate pro-grams and 97% of undergraduate programs arenationally accredited. Southeastern now offers fivenew post-graduate degree programs, including theuniversity’s first doctoral program in EducationalLeadership and unique master’s degree programs inIntegrated Science and Technology, OrganizationalCommunication, Applied Sociology, and the Masterof Arts in Teaching.

Our classes are small in size, interaction is high, and faculty, not graduate students, teach 99 percentof our classes.

Southeastern also is the second largest provider ofdistance education among state universities. Ourmain campus and satellite campus sites in BatonRouge and St. Tammany and Livingston parishes areequipped to handle e-learning activities and studentshave access to computer labs in classroom buildings, residence halls, the War Memorial Student Unionand the Sims Memorial Library. A Student HelpDesk is available by phone, and Student ProductivityServices allows students to check out laptops, exter-nal zip drives, digital cameras, and CD burners.

Southeastern attracts highly qualified studentsthrough a competitive scholarship package based onACT scores and high school GPAs. Any beginning

freshman with an ACT of 24 or higher and a 3.0GPA is awarded an academic scholarship, some ofwhich include coverage of housing costs. TheSoutheastern Scholars Program allows high schoolstudents in any classification with an ACT 24 orhigher and a 3.0 GPA to enroll in Southeasternclasses and receive a scholarship of up to six hoursof tuition.

The Southeastern Channel, Southeastern’s educa-tion access cable channel, went on air on area cablestations in summer 2002, and offers original pro-gramming and telecourses that can be taken for col-lege credit.

Southeastern's Honors program offers an alterna-tive academic track in all departments and majors, and our Study Abroad program allows our studentsto explore the globe!

Alumni of Southeastern are successful in all areasof business, government, and entertainment.Internationally and nationally recognizedSoutheastern alumni include former ESPN sports-caster Robin Roberts, Federal Judge James Brady, and Pulitzer Prize winning journalist RussellCarollo.

Founded in 1925, Southeastern's campus andfacilities have grown to meet the needs of its stu-dents in today's technological environment. In recentyears, Southeastern has undergone a $90 millionconstruction program that has transformed the cam-pus, including new residential facilities, classroomand lab buildings, and a student activity center. Yetour campus still maintains its southern Louisianacharm, nestled in ancient oaks, pines, magnolias andcamellias.

Southeastern's Turtle Cove EnvironmentalResearch Center, located at Pass Manchac, offersstudents an ideal facility for wetlands research.Southeastern has received nearly $3 million in fed-eral funds to enhance environmental research pro-grams at the facility.

Another important benefit provided bySoutheastern is our textbook rental system.Southeastern is the only university in Louisiana, andone of just a few in the nation where you can rent, not buy, your textbooks. At Southeastern, you pay asmall rental fee at the beginning of the semester, andsimply turn your books back in at the end. You willstill have to purchase some paperbacks and work-books, but you'll save a bundle in comparison tobuying all your textbooks and then selling themback at a fraction of their cost.

Southeastern provides health services on campus.Southeastern's Health Center has full-time nursesMonday through Friday for minor incidents, and ifyour case is a bit more serious, physicians make"campus calls" every afternoon to diagnose and treatminor illnesses. Our Counseling Center providesindividual or group counseling to help our studentsto get back up when stressful times in college or lifein general gets them down. Career Services providescareer and educational counseling, help in choosinga major and finding a job.

In an era of considerable change in intercollegiate athletics, theSouthland Conference continues to be a model of stability and con-sistent achievement as it celebrates the academic and athletic accom-

plishments of its member institutions. What began as a small gathering of college administrators over 43

years ago, the Southland Conference has transformed itself into a dynam-ic and respected consortium of 12 member universities in three states.Beginning with a historic meeting of five institutions in Dallas on March15, 1963, that included current members Lamar University (then LamarState College of Technology) and the University of Texas at Arlington(then Arlington State College), the Southland Conference set on anextraordinary course that has proven successful well into its fifth decadeof existence.

On July 1, 2006, the Southland Conference commemorated anothermilestone as the league membership reached 12, marking the largest con-figuration ever for the organization. The addition of the University ofCentral Arkansas and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi expands the Southlandinto the Little Rock metro area and into the eighth largest city in Texas.UCA and A&M-Corpus Christi will immediately enhance the SouthlandConference in innumerable ways, including athletic and academic suc-cesses, strong and principled leadership, and strong fan support andmedia coverage.

All told, the revised membership of the Southland encompasses over160,000 current students and an alumni base of approximately 700,000.Famous alums from Southland Conference schools include formerPresident Lyndon B. Johnson (Texas State), CBSnews anchor Dan Rather (Sam Houston State),U.S. Central Command general Tommy Franks(UT-Arlington), NBA executive Joe Dumars(McNeese State), ABC news and sports anchorRobin Roberts (Southeastern Louisiana), countrymusic star George Strait (Texas State), MajorLeague Baseball stars Kevin Millar (Lamar) andBen Broussard (McNeese State), NBA legendScottie Pippen (Central Arkansas), and actor LouDiamond Phillips (UT-Arlington).

The cities of the Southland are diverse and pro-gressive, ranging from international business andcultural centers such as the Dallas/Fort Worthmetroplex, San Antonio and the New Orleansarea, to the historical cities of Nacogdoches,Texas, and Natchitoches, La., to the home of themodern oil boom, Beaumont, Texas, to the

unique Cajun French cultures found in the Louisiana cities of Thibodauxand Lake Charles. Southland Conference institutions also draw largenumbers of students from the metropolitan areas of Houston, Little Rock,Baton Rouge, Austin and Shreveport.

The Southland sponsors 17 championship sports, all at the NCAADivision I level. The eight men's sports include football, basketball, base-ball, golf, tennis, cross country, and indoor and outdoor track and field. The women compete for nine championships in basketball, volleyball, softball, soccer, golf, tennis, cross country, and indoor and outdoor trackand field. The Conference earns automatic qualification to NCAA cham-pionships in football, men's and women's basketball, baseball, softball, volleyball, men's golf, men's and women's tennis, women's soccer, men'sand women's outdoor track and field, and men's and women's cross coun-try.

The Southland Conference has repeatedly demonstrated its commit-ment to the academic and athletic success of its student-athletes.

With the F.L. McDonald Postgraduate Scholarship Award, the leagueannually honors one male and one female scholar-athlete with a stipendfor postgraduate study. The Scholar-Athlete Award is given to each insti-tution's male and female student-athlete with the highest grade-pointaverage. Also, student-athletes with grade point averages above 3.0 arehonored on the SLC's annual All-Academic teams and Commissioner'sHonor Roll.

In addition to providing expanding opportunities for student-athletes,the Southland Conference and its member institutions are very involvedin various community outreach programs. Many of these programs pro-

vide positive life skills training such as aca-demics, citizenship and leadership to school-aged students in Southland communities. TheSteve McCarty Citizenship Award, initiatedin 2005-06 and named after the formerStephen F. Austin athletic director, properlyrecognizes accomplishments off the court fora male and female student-athlete.
