It’s a word that ripples through us and touches the surrounding community. We don’t need to tell you that it’s been a challenging year at Sojourner Truth House. Like our clients, we have been forced to do more with less, yet out of each challenge hope is born anew. Our dedicated staff, volunteers, donors -- and our sponsor, The Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ -- give us hope when they put aside their own hardships to help us serve the record numbers of people who pass through our doors. Honest “Coffee and Conversations” with our supporters have dared us to hope that in 2011 we will find partners willing to work with us in serving our clients. We won’t give up the hope that we will have an impact equal to the need. How could we think or feel any differently with all of you in our corner? Executive Director SOJOURNERTRUTHHOUSE2010ACCOMPLISHMENTS Program Services : We moved 58 households into housing. Our clients attended DuSable Museum, Museum of Science & Industry,Women’s Health Conference, Elle Conference, our own Women Encouraging Women Summit and Black McDonald’s Operators breakfast. We held our first Women’s Retreat and celebrated Thanksgiving Dinner and Christmas Breakfast with Santa. We began a partnership with The Joy Project regarding parenting & employment. Panache Salon in South Holland offered services to our clients. Our clients and staff held a Fitness Challenge and a car wash. Breast Cancer Awareness programming was expanded to a wider community. We began a new GED tutoring service and continued the Burning Bowl to move staff and clients into the New Year. Community Support Services: Our food pantry was recognized as an Agency of Hope. A 12 ft. x 16 ft. freezer was donated. We hosted the Food Bank Mobile Pantry. Community Involvement: We particpated in the Point in Time Homeless Count and started P.A.D.S. (Public Action to Deliver Shelter) in response to area housing crisis. Our clients helped clean out a senior citizen’s apartment. We partnered with many schools (Purdue University Calumet, Indiana University Northwest, Roosevelt, Aspire, Thea Bowman, University of Phoenix, Ancilla College, Banneker School). Fund/Friend Raising: Our Walk grossed $42,000. Womenade, held in Lubeznik Center, raised over $6,000. The Non-Event appeal broke previous fundraising records. A client-run car wash earned over $400. We began Coffee & Conversation gatherings, giving our partners a chance to tour Sojourner Truth House and hear from our clients. 45% of our clients are children.
