Always Wear a Helmet

Scooter Safety

There is much that you can do to protectyourself when you ride. You’ll find manyhelpful recommendations throughout thismanual. The following are a few that weconsider to be most important.

It’s a proven fact: helmets significantlyreduce the number and severity of headinjuries. So always wear an approvedmotorcycle helmet and make sure yourpassenger does the same. We alsorecommend that you wear eye protection,sturdy boots, gloves, and other protectivegear (page ).

Your scooter can provide many years ofservice and pleasure if you takeresponsibility for your own safety andunderstand the challenges you can meetwhile riding.

You andYour Motorcycle Riding Tips,

The most frequent scooter collisionhappens when a car turns left in front of ascooter. Another common situation is a carmoving suddenly into your lane.

Even if you have ridden other scooters,take time to become familiar with howthis scooter works and handles. Practice ina safe area until you build your skills andget accustomed to the scooter’s size andweight.

Because many crashes involveinexperienced or untrained riders, we urgeall riders to take a motorcycle operatorcourse approved by the Motorcycle SafetyFoundation (MSF). See page .

Some drivers do not see scooters becausethey are not looking for them. To makeyourself more visible, wear brightreflective clothing, position yourself soother drivers can see you, signal beforeturning or changing lanes, and use yourhorn when it will help others notice you.

Always pay attention to other vehiclesaround you, and do not assume that otherdrivers see you. Be prepared to stopquickly or make an evasive maneuver. Forother riding tips, see the booklet,

which camewith your new scooter.

Don’t Drink and Ride

Ride within Your Limits Keep Your Honda in Safe Condition

Scooter Safety

Alcohol and riding don’t mix. Even onedrink can reduce your ability to respond tochanging conditions, and your reactiontime gets worse with every additionaldrink. So don’t drink and ride, and don’tlet your friends drink and ride either.

Pushing limits is another major cause ofscooter crashes. Never ride beyond yourpersonal abilities or faster than conditionswarrant. Remember that alcohol, drugs,fatigue, and inattention can significantlyreduce your ability to make goodjudgments and ride safely.

It’s important to keep your scooterproperly maintained and in safe ridingcondition. To help avoid problems, inspectyour scooter before every ride andperform all recommended maintenance.Never exceed load limits (page ), anddo not modify your scooter (page ) orinstall accessories that would make yourscooter unsafe (page ).

Scooter Safety

Do not add any electrical equipmentthat will exceed the scooter’s electricalsystem capacity (page ). A blownfuse can cause a loss of lights or enginepower (page ).Do not pull a trailer or sidecar with yourscooter. This scooter was not designedfor these attachments, and their use canseriously impair your scooter’s handling.

We strongly advise you not to remove anyoriginal equipment or modify your scooterin any way that would change its design oroperation. Such changes could seriouslyimpair your scooter’s handling, stability,and braking, making it unsafe to ride.

Removing or modifying your lights,exhaust system, emission control system,or other equipment can also make yourscooter illegal.

LampCheck.

Lamp Check

The low oil pressure indicator comes onwhen you turn the ignition switch ON soyou can check that it is working. Theindicator remains on until after the engineis started.

When applicable, the parking brake andhigh beam indicators come on when youturn the ignition switch ON and remainson until you release the parking brakelever or select the low beam.

If one of these indicators does not comeon when it should, have your Honda dealercheck for problems.

The high coolant temperature indicatorand V-matic indicator light for a fewseconds and then go off when you turn theignition switch ON.

These indicators are identified in the tableon pages with the words:

The PGM-FI malfunction indicator lamplights for a few seconds and then goes offwhen you turn the ignition switch ON.

The anti-lock brake system (ABS)indicator comes on when you turn theignition switch ON. This indicator goesoff after you ride the scooter at a speedabove 6 mph (10 km/h).

Display Check

When the ignition switch is turned ON, themulti-function display ( ) will displayfrom the bottom up in sequence.Thereafter, it will temporarily show all themodes and digital segments so you canmake sure the liquid crystal display isfunctioning properly.

The displays are identified in the table onpage with the words:

If any part of these displays does not comeon when it should, have your Honda dealercheck for problems.

tachometer Shows engine speed in revolutions per minute (rpm).tachometer red zone Shows excessive engine rpm range (indicated from

the beginning of the tachometer red zone) in whichoperation may damage the engine. Do not let thetachometer needle enter the red zone.

left turn signal indicator(amber)

Flashes when the left turn signal operates.

speedometer Shows riding speed in miles or kilometers per hour.right turn signal indicator(amber)

Flashes when there is any abnormality in the PGM-FI (Programmed Fuel Injection) system. Should alsolight for a few seconds and then go off when theignition switch is turned ON and the engine stopswitch is at RUN. If the indicator comes on at anyother time, reduce speed and take your scooter to aHonda dealer as soon as possible.

Lights when there is any abnormality in the anti-lockbrake system (ABS). Normally, this indicator comeson when the ignition switch is turned ON, and goesoff after you ride the scooter at a speed above 6 mph(10 km/h). If the indicator comes on while riding,stop the scooter in a safe place and turn off theengine. Refer to , page . Forinformation about ABS, see page .

The odometer ( ) shows the total milesridden.

The tripmeter A ( ) and tripmeter B ( )show number of miles ridden since youlast reset the meter.

To select the odometer, tripmeter A ortripmeter B, press the MODE button ( ).

To reset the tripmeter, press and hold theRESET button ( ) for more than 2seconds when the display is in thetripmeter A or tripmeter B.

To set the minute, press the RESETbutton until the desired minute isdisplayed. The minute display willreturn to ‘‘00’’ when ‘‘60’’ is reachedwithout affecting the hour display.

To end the adjustment, press the MODEbutton or turn the ignition switch OFF.The display will stop flashingautomatically.The adjustment will be cancelled if thebutton is not pressed within about 2minutes.

To unlock the steering lock, insert andpush down on the key and turn it to theright to the OFF position.

The ignition switch ( ) is used for startingand stopping the engine (page ) and tolock the steering for theft prevention(page ). Insert the key and turn it to theright for the ON position. Push down onthe key and turn it to the left to the LOCK(steering lock) position.

Starting Procedure,

The start button ( ) is used for starting theengine. Pushing the button in starts theengine. See page .

The electric starter will only work whenthe rear brake lever is pulled in and theside stand is up.

The engine will not operate if the enginestop switch is in the OFF position whenthe start button is pushed.

The engine stop switch ( ) is used to stopthe engine in an emergency. To operate,push the switch to the OFF position. Theswitch must be in the RUN position tostart the engine, and it should normallyremain in the RUN position even when theengine is OFF.

When the start button is pushed, the startermotor will crank the engine; the headlightwill automatically go out, but the positionlight, taillight and license light will stay on.

Controls & Features


The turn signal switch ( ) is used to signala turn or a lane change. To operate, movethe switch all the way in the properdirection and release it. The appropriateturn signal lights will start blinking. Tocancel the light, push the switch in.

If your scooter is stopped with the ignitionswitch ON and the engine stop switchOFF, the headlight and taillight willremain on, resulting in battery discharge.

The headlight dimmer switch ( ) is usedto change between the high and low beamsof the headlight. To operate, turn theswitch to HI for high beam, LO for lowbeam.

The horn is used to alert other motorists.To operate, push the horn button ( ).

The RESET button is used to reset (zero)the tripmeter. To reset the tripmeter, pressand hold the button for 2 3 seconds(page ).

The MODE button is used to selectodometer, tripmeter A or tripmeter B. Toselect from one tripmeter to the other,press the button (page ).

Parking Brake Lock

Controls & Features


Pull the parking brake lever ( ) back tolock the rear wheel.(See illustration on page ).The parking brake lock will not be appliedif the parking brake is not adjustedproperly (page ).

Before riding, check that the parkingbrake indicator is turned OFF and makesure that the rear brake is fully released sothere is no drag on the rear wheel.

Be sure the parking brake is applied whilestarting and warming up the engine.The parking brake lock will not function ifthe parking brake is not adjusted properly(page ).

Before starting to ride the scooter, releasethe parking brake lever ( ) while lightlypulling down on the rear of the lever.

We urge all riders to take a motorcycleoperator course approved by theMotorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF).New riders should start with the basiccourse, and even experienced riders willfind the advanced course beneficial. A motorcycle riding suit or jacket forcomfort as well as protection.Bright-colored and reflective clothingcan help make you more noticeable intraffic. Avoid loose clothes that couldget caught on any part of your scooter.

Developing your riding skills is an on-going process. Even if you have riddenother scooters, take time to becomefamiliar with how this scooter works andhandles. Practice riding the scooter in asafe area to build your skills. Do not ridein traffic until you get accustomed to thescooter’s controls, and feel comfortablewith its size and weight.

Your scooter has been designed to carryyou and one passenger. When you carry apassenger, you may feel some differenceduring acceleration and braking. But solong as you keep your scooter well-maintained, with good tires and brakes,you can safely carry loads within thegiven limits and guidelines.

However, exceeding the weight limit orcarrying an unbalanced load can seriouslyimpair your scooter’s handling, braking,and stability. Non-Honda accessories,improper modifications, and poormaintenance can also reduce your safetymargin.

Follow these guidelines whenever youcarry a passenger or cargo:

Check that both tires are properlyinflated, and that pressure in the reartire is increased to suit the load(page ).If you change your normal load, youmay need to adjust the rear suspension(page ).To prevent loose items from creating ahazard, make sure that all cargo is tieddown securely before you ride.Place cargo weight as low and close tothe center of your scooter as possible.Balance cargo weight evenly on bothsides.

Preparation

Starting & Stopping the Engine


Always follow the proper startingprocedure described below.

For your safety, avoid starting or operatingthe engine in an enclosed area such as agarage. Your scooter’s exhaust containspoisonous carbon monoxide gas which cancollect rapidly in an enclosed area andcause illness or death.

Your scooter is equipped with a side standignition cut-off system. If the side stand isdown––the engine cannot be started.

Do not use the electric starter for morethan 5 seconds at a time. Release the startbutton for approximately 10 secondsbefore pressing it again.

Operate the start button for slightly longerthan usual without opening the throttle ifthe scooter has been left standing for along time or when the fuel tank has justbeen refilled.

Before starting, insert the key, turn theignition switch ON, and confirm thefollowing:

The engine stop switch is set to RUN.The low oil pressure indicator is ON.The PGM-FI malfunction indicatorlamp (MIL) is OFF.The high coolant temperature indicatoris OFF.The V-matic indicator is OFF.The ABS indicator light is ON.(FSC600A)

Do not ‘‘blip’’ (rapidly open and close)the throttle. This action may cause thescooter to move forward suddenly.

With the throttle closed, push the startbutton ( ). Release the start button assoon as the engine starts.

Be sure to keep the throttle ( ) closedand the parking brake locked whilestarting and warming up the engine.

Snapping the throttle or fast idling formore than about 5 minutes at normal airtemperature may cause exhaust pipediscoloration.

IfYour Engine Quits or Won’t Start,

If the engine fails to start after repeatedattempts, it may be flooded with excessfuel. To clear a flooded engine:

Leave the engine stop switch set toRUN.Open the throttle fully.Press the start button for 5 seconds.Follow the normal starting procedure.If the engine starts, open the throttleslightly if idling is unstable.If the engine does not start, wait 10seconds, then follow steps again.

If the engine still won’t start, refer to

Your scooter’s banking (lean angle) sensorsystem is designed to automatically stopthe engine and fuel pump if the scooter isoverturned.

Before restarting the engine, you mustturn the ignition switch to the OFFposition and then back to ON. The enginewill not restart until you perform thisprocedure.

How to Stop the Engine



Normal Engine Stop

The engine stop switch should normallyremain in the RUN position even when theengine is OFF.

Emergency Engine StopTo stop the engine in an emergency, usethe engine stop switch. To operate, pressthe switch to the OFF position.

To stop the engine, turn the ignition switchOFF.

If your scooter is stopped with the enginestop switch OFF and the ignition switchON, the headlight, position light, taillight,and license light will remain on, resultingin battery discharge.

When riding in wet or rainy conditionsor loose surfaces, the ability tomaneuver and stop is reduced. For yoursafety:

Exercise extreme caution whenbraking, accelerating, or turning.Ride at slower speeds and allow forextra stopping distance.Keep the scooter as upright aspossible.Use extreme caution when ridingover slippery surface such as railroadtracks, iron plates, manhole covers,painted lines, etc.

Applying the brakes too hard may causethe wheels to lock and slide, reducingcontrol of your scooter. If this happens,release the brake controls, steer straightahead until you regain control, thenreapply the brakes more gently.

To slow or stop, apply the front and rearbrake levers smoothly.

Gradually increase braking as you feel thebrakes slowing your speed.

For support, before coming to a completestop, put your left foot down first, thenyour right foot down.

Your scooter is equipped with a CombinedBraking System. Operating the front brakelever applies the front brake. Operatingthe rear brake lever applies the rear brakeand a portion of the front brake. For fullbraking effectiveness, use the front andrear brake levers simultaneously.

This model is also equipped with an Anti-lock Brake System (page ).

This model is not equipped with an Anti-Lock Brake System. As with aconventional scooter braking system,excessively hard application of the brakecontrols may cause wheel lock, reducingcontrol of the scooter.

Braking


Your ability to brake in a turn and to brakehard in an emergency situation areimportant riding skills. We suggestattending a Motorcycle Safety Foundationexperienced rider training course(page ) to retain these skills.

When possible, reduce your speed orcomplete braking before entering a turn.Avoid braking or closing the throttlequickly while turning. Either action maycause one or both wheels to slip andreduce your control of your scooter.

When riding in wet or rainy conditions, oron loose surfaces, the ability to maneuverand stop will be reduced. All of youractions should be smooth under theseconditions. Rapid acceleration, braking orturning may cause loss of control.

For your safety, exercise extreme cautionwhen braking, accelerating or turning.

When descending a long, steep grade,use both brakes intermittently.Continuous brake application canoverheat the brakes and reduce theireffectiveness.

Riding with your hand on either brakelever may actuate the brakelight, givinga false indication to other drivers. Itmay also overheat the brakes, reducingeffectiveness.

Anti-lock Brake System (ABS)

Braking


This model is also equipped with an Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) designed to helpprevent wheel lock up during hard brakingon uneven or other poor surfaces whilerunning straight. Although the wheel maynot lock up if you are braking too hardin a turn the scooter can still lose traction,causing a loss of control.

In some situations, a scooter with ABSmay require a longer stopping distance tostop on loose or uneven surfaces than anequivalent scooter without ABS.

ABS cannot make up for road conditions,bad judgment, or improper operation of

the brakes. It is still your responsibility toride at reasonable speeds for weather, roadsurface, and traffic conditions, and toleave a margin of safety.

ABS may be activated by riding over asharp drop or rise in the road level.It is important to follow the tirerecommendations (page ). The ABScomputer works by comparing wheelspeed. Non-recommended tires can affectwheel speed and may confuse the ABScomputer.

ABS does not function if the battery isdischarged.

ABS is self-checking and is always on.

ABS does not function at low speeds(approximately 6 mph (10 km/h) orbelow).

ABS Indicator Light

Braking


Normally, this light comes on when theignition is turned ON, and goes off afteryou ride the scooter at speed above 6 mph(10 km/h). If there is an ABS problem, theindicator light comes on and remains on.The ABS system does not operate whenthe ABS indicator light is on.

If the ABS indicator light comes on whileriding, stop the scooter in a safe place andturn off the engine.

Turn the ignition ON again. The lightshould come on, and go off after you ridethe scooter at speeds above 6 mph(10 km/h). The ABS indicator light may come on ifyou turn the rear wheel at high speed formore than 30 seconds while the scooter isupright on the stand. This is normal. Turnthe ignition OFF, then turn it ON. Theindicator should come on, then go offafter you run the scooter above 19 mph(30 km/h).

Look for a level parking area. If youcan’t park on a paved surface, makesure the ground surface is firm,especially under the center stand.

To lower the side stand, use yourfoot to guide it down.

Use the side or center stand to supportthe scooter while parked.

If you must park on a hill, position therear tire against the curb at a 45 degreeangle.

If you have to park on a soft surface,insert something solid under the standfor support.

To lower the center stand, stand onthe left side of the scooter. Hold theleft handle grip and the left passengerhandrail. Press down on the tip of thestand with your right foot and,simultaneously, pull up and back.

A thief can easily push anunlocked scooter to a waiting truck.In addition to the steering lock, use agood quality anti-theft device madespecifically to lock a scooter to a secureobject.

Make sure the engine is off before youbegin any maintenance or repairs. Thiswill help eliminate several potentialhazards:

Be sure there isadequate ventilation whenever youoperate the engine.

Let theengine and exhaust system cool beforetouching.

Do not runthe engine unless instructed to do so.

To help prevent the scooter from fallingover, park it on a firm, level surface,using the side stand, center stand or amaintenance stand to provide support.

To reduce the possibility of a fire orexplosion, be careful when workingaround gasoline. Use onlynon-flammable solvent, not gasoline, toclean parts. Keep cigarettes, sparks, andflames away from all fuel-related parts.

Be sure the rear brake lock is set beforerunning the engine while the scooter issupported by the center stand. This willprevent the rear wheel from spinningand avoid the possibility of someonebeing injured from contacting the wheel.

Use only unleaded fuel in your Honda.The use of leaded fuel will damage thecatalytic converter(s). If you ride yourHonda in a country where leaded fuelmight be available, take precautions to useonly unleaded fuel.

Use of lower octane gasoline can causepersistent ‘‘pinging’’ or ‘‘spark knock’’ (aloud rapping noise) which, if severe, canlead to engine damage. Light pingingexperienced while operating under a heavyload, such as climbing a hill, is no causefor concern.

If pinging or spark knock occurs at asteady engine speed under normal load,change brands of gasoline. If pinging orspark knock persists, consult your Hondadealer.

Engine Oil, Filter & Strainer Screen

Engine oil quality is a major factor thataffects both the performance and theservice life of the engine.

Change the engine oil as specified in themaintenance schedule on page .

When running in very dusty conditions, oilchanges should be performed morefrequently than specified in themaintenance schedule.

Using the proper oil (page ) and filter,and regularly checking, adding, andchanging oil will help extend yourengine’s life. Even the best oil wears out.Changing oil helps get rid of dirt anddeposits in the engine. Operating theengine with old or dirty oil can damageyour engine. Running the engine withinsufficient oil can cause serious damageto the engine and transmission.

Coolant Recommendation

Coolant


Using coolant with silicate inhibitors maycause premature wear of water pumpseals or blockage of radiator passages.Using tap water may cause enginedamage.

Maintaining the coolant will allow thecooling system to work properly andprevent freezing, overheating, andcorrosion.

Use Pro Honda HP coolant or anequivalent high quality ethylene glycolantifreeze containing corrosion protectioninhibitors specifically recommended foruse in aluminum engines. Check theantifreeze container label.

Use only distilled water as a part of thecoolant solution. Water that is high inmineral content or salt may be harmful tothe aluminum engine.

Your scooter’s liquid cooling systemdissipates engine heat through the coolantjacket that surrounds the cylinder andcylinder head.

The factory provides a 50/50 solution ofantifreeze and water in this scooter. Thiscoolant solution is recommended for mostoperating temperatures and provides goodcorrosion protection.

Decreasing the concentration of antifreezeto less than 40% will not provide propercorrosion protection.

Increasing the concentration of antifreezeis not recommended because it decreasescooling system performance. Higherconcentrations of antifreeze (up to 60%)should only be used to provide additionalprotection against freezing. Check thecooling system frequently during freezingweather.

If the reserve tank is empty, or ifcoolant loss is excessive, check forleaks and see your Honda dealer forrepair.

With the engine at normal operatingtemperature, check the coolant level inthe reserve tank. It should be betweenthe UPPER ( ) and LOWER ( ) levelmarks.

Spark Plugs

Improperly tightened spark plugs candamage the engine. If a plug is too loose,a piston may be damaged. If a plug is tootight, the threads may be damaged.

Reinstall the spark plug caps. Take careto avoid pinching any cables or wires.Install the remaining parts in thereverse order of removal.

Suspension


Your front and rear suspension systemsuse springs and hydraulic damping devicesthat suspend your weight and most of theweight of your scooter.

The spring pre-load for your rearsuspension system adjusts the amount offorce required to begin compression of thespring.

Consider adjusting your rear suspensionpre-load whenever you change yournormal load, when adding or subtracting apassenger, cargo, or accessories, or whenthe road or riding conditions change.

The way you ride your scooter and thetype of ride you want to experience canalso influence your suspension needs.

Lower spring pre-load provides a softerride and is usually preferred for light loadsand smooth roads. Higher spring pre-loadprovides a firmer ride and isrecommended for heavy loads, rough roadconditions, and faster, more challengingriding.

Suspension


The spring pre-load adjuster ( ) haspositions for different load or riding

conditions.

Use the pin spanner ( ) to adjust the rearshock spring pre-load.

Position 1: for a light load and smoothroad conditions.Position 2: standard position.

Always adjust the shock absorber positionin sequence (1-2-3-4-5 or 5-4-3-2-1).Attempting to adjust directly from 1 to 5or 5 to 1 may damage the shock absorber.

Positions 3 to 5: for when the scooter ismore heavily loaded. (Also increase springpre-load for stiffer rear suspension.)

Brakes


As the brake pads wear, the brake fluidlevel will drop. A leak in the system willalso cause the level to drop.

Frequently inspect the system to ensurethere are no fluid leaks. Periodicallyinspect the brake fluid level and the brakepads for wear.

If the brake lever freeplay does not feelwithin the normal range while riding,check the brake pads for wear (page ).Worn pads should be replaced. If the padsare not worn beyond the recommendedlimit, there is probably air in the brakesystem. See your Honda dealer to have theair bled from the system.

The hydraulic braking systems on yourscooter dissipate the heat generated by thefriction of the brake pads on the brakediscs as the wheels are slowed.

Properly inflated tires provide the bestcombination of handling, tread life, andriding comfort. Generally, underinflatedtires wear unevenly, adversely affecthandling, and are more likely to fail frombeing overheated. Tires


We recommend that you visually checkyour tires before every ride and use an airpressure gauge to measure the air pressureat least once a month or any time youthink the tires might be low. Even tiresthat are in good condition may lose one totwo psi per month if not checked andadjusted regularly.

Tubeless tires have some degree of self-sealing ability if they are punctured.However, because leakage is often veryslow, you should look closely forpunctures whenever a tire is not fullyinflated.

The recommended ‘‘cold’’ tire pressuresare:

Always check air pressure when your tiresare ‘‘cold’’ –– after the scooter has beenparked for at least three hours. If youcheck air pressure when your tires are‘‘warm’’ –– even if your scooter has onlybeen ridden for a few miles –– the

readings will be higher. If you let air outof warm tires to match the recommendedcold pressures, the tires will beunderinflated.

Whenever you check the tire pressures,you should also look for:

Bumps or bulges in the side of the tireor the tread. Replace any tire that has abump or bulge.Cuts, slits, or cracks in the tires.Replace the tire if you can see fabric orcord.Nails or other foreign objects embeddedin the side of the tire or tread.Excessive tread wear.

Also, if you hit a pothole or hard objectwhile riding, pull to the side of the road assoon as you safely can and carefullyinspect the tires for damage.

For the best performance, you shouldreplace a tire before the tread depth at thecenter reaches the following limits:

If the wear indicators are visible, replacethe tire immediately as it is no longer safe.

The service life of your tires is dependenton many factors, including, but not limitedto, riding habits, road conditions, vehicleloading, tire pressure, maintenance history,speed, and environmental conditions (evenwhen the tires are not in use).In addition to your regular inspections andtire pressure maintenance, it isrecommended that you have annual

inspections performed once the tires reach5 years old. If You Have a Flat Tire,

A permanent repair, such as an internalplug patch, can be made if a tire has only asmall puncture in the tread area. With sucha repair, you should not exceed 50 mph(80 km/h) for the first 24 hours, or 80 mph(130 km/h) at any time thereafter. Inaddition, you may not be able to safelycarry as much weight. Rinse your scooter thoroughly with coolwater to remove loose dirt.Fill a bucket with cool water. If You Have a Flat Tire


A flat tire is always unwelcome,especially if you are far from help. If youthink you are losing air, or you hit apothole or hard object, pull safely to theside of the road so you can inspect thetires and assess the situation. (Be sure topark on a firm, level surface and use thecenter stand for support.) You shouldexamine the tire treads and sidewalls forforeign objects or damage. If you find atire that has been punctured or damaged,you have two options.

Option 1:Have Your Scooter TransportedIf a tire has a major puncture or a cut inthe tread or sidewall, or the bead has comeloose from the rim, there is probably notmuch you can do except have your scootertransported to a Honda dealer or other

qualified service facility. Even with asimple puncture, this may be the safestand least troublesome solution. Fortransporting instructions, see page .

Option 2:Make a Temporary Roadside RepairIf a tire has only a minor nail puncture andis not completely flat, you may be able tomake an emergency repair that couldallow you to continue riding to where youcan get the tire replaced or permanentlyrepaired.

Types of Temporary Repairs



Due to the uncertainty of any temporaryrepair, you should ride slowly (not over 30mph, 50 km/h) and carefully (preferablywithout a passenger or cargo) until the tireis replaced or permanently repaired. Stop

frequently and check the air pressure. Ifthe tire is losing pressure, it may be unsafeto continue riding. As the tire gets low, itwill affect the handling of your scooter(especially with a passenger and cargo)and it may overheat and blow out.

The following types of temporary repairsgenerally require a source of air to inflatethe tire. Possible sources include COcartridges or cans of compressed airdesigned to inflate a tire.

Should You Repair or Replace aTire?

Tubeless tires havesome self-sealing ability if they arepunctured and the result is usually just aslow leak. If this is the case, you can tryinflating the tire to see if it will hold airpressure. If you can see a nail or otherobject embedded in the tire tread, do notremove it at this time.

The idea here is to dosomething to temporarily stop the leak.If you have a tubeless tire repair kit,you can pull out the nail and tryinserting an external plug in thepuncture. Follow the instructions thatcame with the repair kit and be sure toinflate the tire to the correct pressure.

We strongly recommend that you replace,not permanently repair, any tire that ispunctured or damaged, even if the tire hasonly a minor puncture. For a fulldiscussion of repairs and replacement, seepage .146

If Your Engine Overheats


Continuing to ride with an overheatedengine can cause serious engine damage.

A steaming engine indicates a coolantleak. Shut the engine off and wait untilthe steaming stops. Look for a leak, butdon’t touch the engine or radiatorsystem. Let everything cool off first.

Normally, the coolant temperature on yourtemperature meter will rise and then leveloff. Hot weather may cause thetemperature to rise higher than normal. Sowill temporary stress such as climbing ahill. If you’re stuck in stop-and-go traffic,the temperature may climb some, but theradiator fan is designed to preventoverheating. Be aware of these variationsas you monitor the meter.

If there’s no obvious problem, leave theengine on so the fan and coolantcirculating system can continueworking. Monitor the temperature meter.The temperature may drop to thenormal range after a brief stop with noload on the engine.

If the high coolant temperature indicatorcomes on, and the coolant temperaturemeter displays five segments for noapparent reason, pull safely to the side ofthe road. If possible, park in a shady area.

If Your Engine Overheats


Check the radiator fan.If the fan is not working, turn theengine off. Open the fuse box (page

) and check the radiator fan fuse.If the fuse is blown, replace it with theproper (same rating) spare fuse. Startthe engine. If the high coolanttemperature indicator come on, and thecoolant temperature meter displays fivesegments, turn the engine off.If the radiator fan is working, visuallycheck the coolant level in the reservetank, located under the right fairingpocket (page ). It isn’t necessary totouch the radiator system.

If you are able to resume riding, continueto monitor the meter frequently.

If the reserve tank is low or empty, don’tride without adding coolant (page ).After adding coolant, turn the engine onand check the temperature meter.If the temperature doesn’t drop, do not

ride. The engine needs repair. Transportyour scooter to a Honda dealer (page

).If the temperature drops to normal,check the coolant level. If it has gonedown, add more coolant.

If there’s a mild leak, you can ride forawhile, carefully watching the meter. Beprepared to stop and add more coolant orwater. If the leak is bad, transport yourscooter to a Honda dealer (page ).

If the Low Oil Pressure Indicator Lights


Continuing to ride with low oil pressurecan cause serious engine damage.

If you check your engine oil levelregularly, you should never see the low oilpressure indicator while riding. Normally,it will only light momentarily when youturn the ignition switch ON. Occasionally,it may flicker at or near idling speed.

Low oil pressure may be caused by an oilleak, a low oil level, or some problem inthe engine’s lubrication system.

Check for an oil leak.

If the indicator comes on while you’reriding, don’t ignore it. Pull safely to theside of the road. Stop the engine as soonas it’s safe to do so.

Then check the oil level. If necessary,add the recommended oil (page ) tothe upper level mark. If you must leaveyour scooter to get oil, secure it as muchas possible.After adding oil, start the engine, andcheck that the low oil pressure indicatorgoes off. Check for a possible leak.

If the indicator goes off and there is noleak –– resume riding. If there is a leak–– do not ride the scooter until the leakis repaired by a Honda dealer.

If a Fuse Blows


All of the electrical circuits on yourscooter have fuses to protect them fromdamage caused by excess current flow(short circuit or overload).

If something electrical on your scooterstops working, the first thing you shouldcheck for is a blown fuse.Determine from the chart on the circuitfuse box cover which fuse or fuses controlthat component. Check those fuses first,but check all the fuses before lookingelsewhere for another possible cause ofthe problem. Replace any blown fuses andcheck component operation.

If a Fuse Blows


If you replace a blown fuse with a sparefuse that has a lower rating, replace thefuse with the correct rating as soon as youcan. Also remember to replace any sparefuses that were installed.

If you do not have a spare fuse and youcannot ride the scooter without fixing theproblem, take a fuse of the same rating ora lower rating from one of the othercircuits that you can do withouttemporarily.

If the replacement fuse of the same ratingburns out in a short time, there is probablya serious electrical problem on yourscooter. Leave the blown fuse in thatcircuit and have your scooter checked byyour Honda dealer.

If You Crash


Transporting Your Scooter,

Personal safety is your first priority after acrash. If you or anyone else has beeninjured, take time to assess the severity ofthe injuries and whether it is safe tocontinue riding. Call for emergencyassistance if needed. Also followapplicable laws and regulations if anotherperson or vehicle is involved in the crash.

If there is minor damage, or you areunsure about possible damage, ride slowlyand cautiously. Sometimes, crash damageis hidden or not immediately apparent, soyou should have your scooter thoroughlychecked at a qualified service facility assoon as possible. Also, be sure to haveyour Honda dealer check the frame andsuspension after any serious crash.

If your scooter cannot be ridden, seepage .

If you decide that you are capable ofriding safely, first evaluate the conditionof your scooter. If the engine is stillrunning, turn it off and look it overcarefully; inspect it for fluid leaks, checkthe tightness of critical nuts and bolts, andsecure such parts as the handlebar, controllevers, brakes, and wheels.

If You Lose Your Key

You should receive a key number plate( ) with your keys. Store this plate in asafe place.

Be sure to record your key number in theQuick Reference section at the rear of themanual. You’ll need this number to have aduplicate key made.

A lost key won’t be a problem if you takepreventative action. Store one duplicatekey in a safe place at home and carry asecond duplicate in your wallet.

If you lose your key and aren’t carrying aduplicate, either get your spare or haveone made. If you don’t know your keynumber, call the dealer where youpurchased your Honda. They may have itlisted in their records. If they don’t,

Warranty ComplianceThe U. S. Environmental ProtectionAgency (EPA) and the California AirResources Board (CARB) require thatyour scooter comply with applicableexhaust emissions standards during itsuseful life, when operated and maintainedaccording to the instructions provided.

The EPA also requires that scooters builtafter January 1, 1983 comply withapplicable noise emission standards forone year or 3,730 miles (6,000 km) afterthe time of sale to the ultimate purchaser,when operated and maintained accordingto the instructions provided.

Compliance with the terms of theDistributor’s Warranties for HondaScooter Emission Control Systems isnecessary in order to keep the emissionssystem warranty in effect.

Source of Exhaust EmissionsThe combustion process produces carbonmonoxide (CO), oxides of nitrogen (NOx),and hydrocarbons (HC). Control ofhydrocarbons and oxides of nitrogen isvery important because, under certainconditions, they react to formphotochemical smog when subjected tosunlight. Carbon monoxide does not reactin the same way, but it is toxic.

Honda Motor Co., Ltd. utilizes varioussystems to reduce hydrocarbons, oxides ofnitrogen, and carbon monoxide.

The PGM-FI system has four subsystems:Air Intake, Engine Control, Fuel Control,and Exhaust Control.The Engine Control Module (ECM) usesvarious sensors to determine how much airis going into the engine. It then controlshow much fuel is injected under alloperating conditions.

The system constantly adjusts the ignitiontiming, reducing the amount of HC, COand NOx produced.

The exhaust emission control systemincludes a secondary air injection system,ignition timing control system, PGM-FIsystem, three-way catalytic converter, andheated oxygen sensor.

No adjustment to these systems should bemade although periodic inspection of thecomponents is recommended.

Secondary Air Injection System Evaporative Emission Control System

Three-Way Catalytic Converter



The secondary air injection systemintroduces filtered air into the exhaustgases in the exhaust port. The secondaryair injection system helps improveemission control performance.

This scooter complies with therequirements of the California AirResources Board (CARB) evaporativeemission regulations. Fuel vapor from thefuel tank is directed into the charcoalcanister and air cleaner where it isadsorbed and stored while the engine isstopped. When the engine is running andthe purge control solenoid valve is open,fuel vapor in the charcoal canister and aircleaner is drawn into the engine throughthe throttle body.

The three-way catalytic converter is in theexhaust system. Through chemicalreactions, it converts HC, CO, and NOx inthe engine’s exhaust to carbon dioxide(CO ), nitrogen (N), and water vapor.2

Catalytic Converter


A defective catalytic converter contributesto air pollution, and can impair your

engine’s performance. Follow theseguidelines to protect your scooter’scatalytic converter.

Always use unleaded gasoline. Even asmall amount of leaded gasoline cancontaminate the catalyst metals, makingthe catalytic converter ineffective.

Keep the engine in good runningcondition. A poorly running engine cancause the catalytic converter to overheatcausing damage to the converter or thescooter.

If your engine is misfiring, backfiring,stalling, or otherwise not runningproperly, stop riding and turn off theengine. Have your scooter serviced assoon as possible.

This scooter is equipped with a three-waycatalytic converter.The catalytic converter contains preciousmetals that serve as catalysts, promotingchemical reactions to convert the exhaustgasses without affecting the metals.

The catalytic converter acts on HC, CO,and NOx. A replacement unit must be anoriginal Honda part or its equivalent.

The catalytic converter must operate at ahigh temperature for the chemicalreactions to take place. It can set fire toany combustible materials that come nearit. Park your scooter away from highgrasses, dry leaves, or other flammables.

Oxygenated Fuels


If you use an oxygenated fuel, be sure it isunleaded and meets the minimum octanerating requirement.Before using an oxygenated fuel, try toconfirm the fuel’s contents. Some states/provinces require this information to beposted on the pump.

The following are the EPA-approvedpercentages of oxygenates:

ETHANOL (ethyl or grain alcohol) 10%by Volume

You may use gasoline containing up to10% ethanol by volume. Gasolinecontaining ethanol may be marketedunder the name ‘‘Gasohol’’.

MTBE (Methyl Tertiary Butyl Ether) 15%by Volume

You may use gasoline containing up to15% MTBE by volume.

Some conventional gasolines are beingblended with alcohol or an ethercompound. These gasolines arecollectively referred to as oxygenatedfuels. To meet clean air standards, someareas of the United States use oxygenatedfuels to help reduce emissions.

Oxygenated Fuels


Oxygenated f uels can damage paint andplastic. Damage caused by spilled f uel isnot covered by warranty.

Fuel system damage or performanceproblems resulting from the use of anoxygenated fuel containing more than thepercentages of oxygenates mentionedabove are not covered under warranty.

Oxygenated fuels can damage paint andplastic. Be careful not to spill fuel whenfilling the fuel tank. Wipe up any spillsimmediately.

If you notice any undesirable operatingsymptoms, try another service station orswitch to another brand of gasoline.

METHANOL (methyl or wood alcohol)5% by Volume

You may use gasoline containingmethanol containing up to 5% methanolby volume as long as it also containscosolvents and corrosion inhibitors toprotect the fuel system. Gasolinecontaining more than 5% methanol byvolume may cause starting and/orperformance problems. It may alsodamage metal, rubber, and plastic partsof your fuel system.

Your new Honda is covered by thesewarranties:

Your warranty coverage will not bevoided if you choose to perform your ownmaintenance. However, you should havethe proper tools and service informationand be mechanically qualified. Failuresthat occur due directly to impropermaintenance are not covered.

Scooter Limited WarrantyEmission Control System WarrantyNoise Control Warranty

It is important to realize that yourwarranty applies to defects in material orworkmanship of your Honda. Yourwarranty coverage does not apply tonormal wear or deterioration associatedwith using the scooter.

There are responsibilities, restrictions, andexclusions which apply to these warranties.Please read the Warranties Booklet givento you by your Honda dealer at the time ofpurchase. Be sure to keep your Hondaowner’s card with your WarrantiesBooklet.

Almost all of your warranty coverage canbe extended through the Honda ProtectionPlan. For more information, see yourHonda dealer.

Warranty Service


Please remember that recommendedmaintenance interval servicing is notincluded in your warranty coverage.Additionally, your warranty does notapply to the normal wear of items (such asbrakes, tires, etc.).

If you have questions about warrantycoverage or the nature of the repair, it isbest to talk to the Service Manager of yourHonda dealer.

Sometimes, in spite of the best intentionsof all concerned, a misunderstanding mayoccur. If you aren’t satisfied with yourdealer’s handling of the situation, wesuggest you discuss your problem with theappropriate member of the dealership’smanagement team. If the problem hasalready been reviewed with the ServiceManager, Parts Manager, Sales Manager,etc., contact the Owner of the dealershipor their designated representative.

If you believe you have a problem withyour scooter, call the service departmentof your Honda dealer. Make anappointment for an inspection anddiagnosis. Remember, as the owner of thescooter, you will be asked to authorize thatinspection. Your dealer will give you theresults of the inspection. If the problem iscovered under warranty, your dealer willperform the warranty repairs for you.

Your owner’s manual was written to covermost of the questions you might ask aboutyour Honda. Any questions not answeredin the owner’s manual can be answered byyour Honda dealer. If your dealer doesn’thave the answer right away, they will getit for you.

If you have a difference of opinion withyour dealer, please remember that eachdealership is independently owned andoperated. That’s why it’s important towork to resolve any differences at thedealership level.
