We take this opportunity to thank you, our donors and volunteers, for your dedication and support of the 2010 Victorian Campaign. MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN ESTHER FRENKIEL & THE PRESIDENT SHLOMO WERDIGER

For a little over 4 months, I have been in the role of Campaign Director, during which time the 2010 campaign has been underway and received a wonderful response from the community. I have recently returned from Israel where I was privileged to visit some of the KH-UIA sponsored absorption centres and youth villages. Witnessing the UIA work first hand, the difference we are making in these people’s lives as well as the smiles on the children’s faces as they spoke of their favorite activities was a true joy to behold! I, together with the support of our dedicated lay leaders, volunteers, staff and you- the donor, look forward to making a difference in future campaigns. This visit reaffirmed my resolve to grow UIA Victoria and strengthen the connection of the Melbourne Jewish Community to these wonderful projects. At this time of year, while we reflect on our actions and ways we can improve ourselves, UIA Victoria will again be running its Kol Nidrei Appeal and we call on your continued support as a community. Wishing you and your families a Shana Tova Umetukah.

MESSAGE FROM THE NEW CAMPAIGN DIRECTOR CRAIG WOOLF

Shalom UIA Supporters,

This is my fifth and final Rosh Hashana I will spend with the Melbourne Jewish Community as a Shaliach of Keren Hayesod – UIA.As I am not a professional author or poet, it is hard to articulate the feelings of gratitude, excitement and the warmth I carry with me on my departure after working with the community for more than four years.

During my military service as an officer in the Israeli Navy, I used to gather intelligence prior to performing any mission, however unlike in the military, the reality about Melbourne far exceeded the intelligence collected before I arrived. I discovered an outstanding community of people who have remarkable knowledge and care for the Jewish State as well as a strong commitment to Israel.

My main role as a Shaliach was to raise money for the National Social Projects of the State of Israel and I hope that over and above this role, I have succeeded in bringing you the unique spirit of Eretz Israel. You have definitely introduced me to the spirit of a proud and successful Jewish community.

More than $85 million has been donated by you to the UIA over the past 5 years. This money has been used to strengthen Israeli society and provide assistance to the many Israeli’s who face challenges both in the past, the present and the future.

On a personal level, you have given me an unforgettable experience and I thank you from the bottom of my heart.Shana Tova!

MESSAGE FROMTHE SHALIACH

& EXECUTIVEDIRECTOR

MEIR BUBER

Don’t get tired! We recently read that the Israeli media reported on the Israeli Navy Special Forces’ interception of a cargo vessel loaded with weaponry. It was flying an Antiguan flag, some 100 miles west off the coast of Israel. The weapons were sent from Iran to the Hezbollah organization in Lebanon and I thought about the verse from Ecclesiastes: “Generations come and generations go but the earth remains forever”. In this case the “sea remains forever.”

This news reminded me of the days and especially the nights I spent as an Israeli Naval Officer when we intercepted smuggled weapons en route to terrorist organizations in Lebanon and the Gaza Strip. This prevented the delivery of explosive devices, mortars and missiles to the terrorists which would then be directed to harm the civilian population of Israel.

It was my privilege to work very closely with former PM Ariel Sharon for a few years. There is no disputing his military talent as he is one of the greatest warriors of the IDF. He led battles that are studied in military academies all over the world. During one of the conversations we had regarding non-military issues, he asked rhetorically “Do you know why I win fights ? Because I start them at 4am. Our soldiers are tired and some of them even curse me but I know that the other side is more tired than we are. And the side that is less tired will be the victor!”

Since the establishment of the Jewish State our enemies have tried to smuggle weapons in order to harm us and we take steps to prevent these activities.

And who will win? Those who won’t stop sailing and collecting intelligence data, the side that will be less tired.

On reading this article, I also wondered how many members of the missile boat “Eilat” which intercepted the merchant vessel are new immigrants who have completed their absorption process and are now defending their old – new homeland.

We are about to celebrate the Festival of Chanukah. The Battle of the Maccabeans against the occupiers of the land of Israel was not the first and certainly not the last struggle of the Jewish people for its own homeland. However its lesson, that we can never become tired, was learnt then, and should be seen as timely and relevant even today.

Let us never be tired in our support for Israel and may we continue to win!

UIA SUMMER CAMPS TO ASSIST TRAUMA VICTIMS OF KASSAM ROCKETS

For the children of Sderot, this summer will be just their second in which Kassam rockets are not falling, but not a single child has forgotten the trauma the rockets caused. Currently about 300 children are participating in special summer camps sponsored by KH–UIA and by the JAFI Fund for Victims of Terror. Through a variety of individual and group activities, this 10 day camp provides a means for these children to treat their fears. Activities include therapeutic horseback riding and psychodrama sessions to enhance their sense of personal security.

“Keren Hayesod assists children from the periphery of Israel through a range of varied projects which take place regularly throughout the year,”

said KH Director General Greg Masel, who added, “it is also important that we assist the children of Sderot and vicinity through this special camp to try to strengthen their sense of security as much as possible.”

Eli Carmeli, the director of the Fund for Victims of Terror, thanked KH for its unique contribution on behalf of young victims of terrorism. Carmeli noted that the Jewish Agency’s fund helps terror victims meet their needs and fulfill their dreams. Since the fund was established in 2006, it has assisted more than 2,800 victims of terrorism and their families.

As one of the most courageous journalists in the Middle East, Jerusalem Post’s Arab correspondent Khaled Abu Toameh addressed an audience of over 200 people at a public forum co-hosted by UIA and AIJAC on Thursday 13 May.

Khaled brings a refreshing yet pragmatic perspective to the Israeli-Arab paradigm. Given his background both as a Palestinian Arab, and journalist, Khaled speaks with authority as he exposes and refutes the calculated propaganda campaign of the anti-Israel lobby.

In relation to the prospect of a peace agreement, Khaled asserts that this will be a difficult obstacle to overcome as Hamas and Fatah are not willing partners and openly express their intentions of replacing the Jewish State with an Islamic one. He believes that Obama’s greatest mistake is dragging the Israeli’s and the Palestinians against their will to discuss the prospect of peace. It is difficult to bridge the gap on the topic of settlements, security, borders and the like. He is certain that talks will fail.

In order to overcome this, Khaled claims that it is better to maintain the status quo i.e. to cease fire, improve the living conditions and ease restrictions on the Palestinians which will in turn make them more willing to compromise when it comes to negotiations. By providing better services for the Palestinians, the radicals will be undermined.

Emunah was a woman full of life who wouldn’t allow any disease, bad news or conflict destroy her spirit.

Emunah was born as Faith, a proud Jewess who left Boston to live in Jerusalem.

Emunah was dedicated to Israel as a nurse, a canvasser and as a Shlicha for UIA Victoria.

Emunah was a devoted daughter, wife, mother and grandmother.

Emunah was an exemplary friend who was caring, nurturing and only thought of how to do good by all her friends.

Emunah baked for me special cookies which she knew I liked even in our last meeting together, only a few weeks prior to her passing.

The world will not be the same without Emunah.

YAARI: OBAMA’S POLICY BACK FLIP

The foreign policy team of US President Barack Obama is undertaking a reassessment of its policy all over the Middle East, including Israel argued Israel’s leading Channel 2 commentator Ehud Yaari in an overflowing AIJAC/UIA function he addressed in Melbourne on July 12.

No one has made or will make a public declaration about such a change, he said, but a reassessment is nonetheless underway, and we can already detect the first products of this rethinking of policy.

The policy of keeping a distance from Israel, of picking fights with Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, led nowhere. There was a nominal freeze of construction in the settlements. The

settlement freeze was not important in the first place and the president has decided, as you could tell during his latest meeting with Netanyahu, not to make it the central issue anymore. Instead we are going to see a policy which emphasises cooperation with Israel, understanding of Israel, working together, hand in hand, to bring the Palestinians to direct negotiations with Israel, instead of what is now in place – proximity talks.

They have reached the conclusion that keeping a distance from Israel, picking unnecessary fights with Israel, was not going to advance the peace process. They are not getting anything in return from the Arab world. This is why Rahm Emanuel, Chief of Staff to President Obama, when he came

to Israel recently on a private visit, a bar mitzvah for his son, said in so many words, “We screwed up.”

Yaari also argued there has also been a profoundly important change of heart in Washington D.C. concerning Iran - that the option of accepting a nuclear Iran, unwillingly of course, and then trying to contain it, which has been advocated by many important players on the American foreign policy scene is now apparently off the table. There is an understanding by the administration that in no way can Iran be allowed to acquire a nuclear weapon, he concluded.

MAIN APPEAL

The 2010 Canvassers’ End of Campaign Dinner and Farewell to Miriam Suss was held at Kimberley Gardens on Thursday 24 June for all canvassers across UIA Victoria’s appeal groups.

The 100 UIA volunteers who attended the dinner heard The Australian’s foreign editor Greg Sheridan speak on his chosen topic: “Why I love Israel.” Sheridan spoke with much fondness about his recent trips to Israel where he noted how inspiring it was to see a Middle Eastern country that upholds the ideals

of liberty, democracy and freedom for all her citizens. His address was both entertaining and informative and reconfirmed his support for the State of Israel.

The evening also paid tribute to Miriam Suss, who served as UIA CEO for 8 years. Old colleagues and friends of her, Laurence Joseph and Mark Blankfield spoke fondly about Miriam and their time working with her. UIA presented her with a certificate and a scholarship to an Oleh student will be given in her name.

18 year old King David student, Itai Avisar sang Yachad and Mitachat Lashamayim which was thoroughly enjoyed by the audience.

UIA extends a big thank you to all its volunteers who have worked tirelessly for the 2010 campaign. Their dedication in undertaking both face-to-face and phone canvassing is a testament to our strong Victorian Jewish community.

12 UIA Major Donors recently participated in a mission called, “Nourishment for the Body and Soul.” Commencing in Moscow, the group accompanied a flight of new Olim making Aliyah to Israel. They were privileged to witness the immigration process and see these Olim become Israeli citizens. UIA Victoria Executive Director and Shaliach, Meir Buber

led the Mission and recently received the following correspondence from one of the Olim Nailya Glasova;

“Shalom, All is good. We live in Ashkelone. All we learn language, children have started to go to school and a kindergarten a week later after

Aliya. Now a vacation. We with the spouse learn a Hebrew in ulpan in Beit Canada. The house in which we live is opposite to the sea. From windows we see the sea, it is very pleasant. Teachers of school in delight from children, very much praise.”

SUPER SUNDAY PHONE APPEAL

WOMEN’S DIVISION

I would like to thank all of the fantastic volunteers who have helped raise much needed funds for the Youth Futures Project we support in Israel.

From the many women who have come in to the office to do phone canvassing and phoned from home to all of the fantastic women who attended our annual breakfast in March this year. There is still much to be done and any help that you can provide would be greatly appreciated. This assistance could be financial assistance or just as important, your time, to help us canvass and spread the UIA Women’s Division message.

My goal is to introduce many new women to the Women’s Division next year. If you are interested please come on board. You will be so pleased to see where the money raised is going and the fantastic results we are achieving. Please also keep your eye out for our annual breakfast function next year.

EMILIA LAWEL – JUST ONE OF OUR YOUTH FUTURE SUCCESS STORIES

Emilia is the daughter of an Israeli-Bucharan mother and Nigerian father who does not live in Israel. She was raised by her mother with almost no support from the father. Although Emilia is a very talented girl, she needed a structured framework and the support to reach her potential.

Emilia spent hours after school alone with nothing to do, no motivation, in a house that was bare. She would often come to school with no food and suffered serious environmental neglect. Even though Emilia was accepted socially, she

had several social problems. She tended to use abusive and violent speech and fight with other girls. Since entering the Youth Futures program, Emilia’s behavior has improved tremendously and she is learning to speak respectfully to her peers. She now understands the importance of positive social behavior and has been empowered by activities such as jewellery making and dancing. She looks up to her Youth Futures trustee like a big sister and a model for proper behavior.

The key to Emilia’s success lies in her continued participation in the Youth Futures Program.

Emilia is just one of the hundreds of children that this program is helping to realise their dreams and full potential.

PLANNED GIVING

27 people from Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane participated in a 13 day Yom Ha’atzmaut Mission to Israel, led by the Director of Planned Giving Micky Morag.

The mission was extremely successful and a wonderful way of exposing the participants to the work of the UIA first hand. Over and above the jam packed itinerary of touring Israel from the North to the South, experiencing Yom Hazikaron and Yom Ha’atzmaut in Israel was unforgettable. It truly touched the hearts of each and every person.

“The best way of seeing Israel…we had a wonderful insight into some of the UIA projects which Australia supports.” (Annette Grauman)

“May we encourage you all to think seriously about joining these wonderfully inspiring missions.” (Ann and Brian Turner) If you are interested in joining this unique program, please contact Micky Morag on 9272 5533 or email [email protected].

MISSION REUNION

A reunion of Melbourne participants from the Yom Ha’atzmaut Mission was held in late June hosted by Heather and Trevor Cohen at their Mount Eliza home.

They enjoyed a beautiful lunch prepared by the Cohen’s during which they reminisced about the mission and watched a DVD produced by Abe Grauman. Strong friendships and long lasting bonds have been created.

Young UIA Major Donors were treated to a unique perspective of the business world by newly appointed CEO of Lonely Planet, Matt Goldberg at a boardroom lunch hosted by the Royal Bank of Scotland earlier in the year. Matt spoke about his background – having been recruited by BBCW to Lonely Planet from Dow Jones and Co. in New

York where he was Senior Vice President of digital strategy and operations.

Matt discussed the importance of an organisation’s content over the medium in which it’s conveyed. Matt also conveyed Lonely Planet’s commitment to publishing physical travel books. Although he

admitted that Lonely Planet’s books were priced at a premium, he emphasized that the purchase of a Lonely Planet book for $50 on a $10,000 holiday was a manageable cost, given the priceless information contained in it.

YOUNG UIA

An emergency YUIA Appeal ‘Sessions’ event was held in response to the recent flotilla incident in June.

The audience heard from senior AIJAC policy analyst Jamie Hyams who gave an expert analysis on the current situation in Israel and also answered audience questions on how to write letters to the media and speak on radio. Michelle Rojas from Israel advocacy group StandWithUs International commented on the organisations recent launch of their own ‘Fact Flotilla’ off the coast of Israel which was made up of five donated vessels with banners draped over the side saying “free Gaza – from Hamas”.

The highlight of the night was a live video link up with a member of the IDF Spokespersons department.

The spokesperson gave a unique insight into the many challenges facing the IDF. The spokesperson left the audience with no doubt that the IDF continues to be an organisation based on moral and ethical accountability of which it continues to uphold.

SCHOOL EDUCATIONART COMPETITION

Keren Hayesod has been running a global art competition over the past few months. Children, aged 2-18, have been asked to draw how they imagine Israel. We have had a wonderful array of entries from Victoria. Here are some of our talented youth.

The students of The King David School – Southwick Campus, and Mount Scopus Memorial College Gandel Besen Campus were recently presented with a certificate to honor their fundraising efforts for the UIA sponsored Ben Yakir Youth Aliyah Village in Israel. Every Shabbat, the students placed a coin in the UIA “Sponsor a child” tins placed in their classrooms throughout ’09 and ’10 in order to support the youth village that teaches Israeli ‘at-risk’ and disadvantaged youth about responsibility and respect for each other.

YACHADBOARDROOM LUNCH WITH MAX MARKSON

If you would like to make a donation to the Ben Youth Village, please contact UIA on 9272 5533 or email: [email protected]

Any PR is good PR,” Max Markson agent to the stars, recently told an audience of 40 people at a Yachad Boardroom lunch hosted by Josh Liberman at LJCB Investment Group. Markson, in a casual, humorous style (the speech was peppered with a range of impersonations including Groucho Marx), relayed some interesting stories about his dealings with

various stars ranging from Bill Clinton to Lara Bingle. He described how he “fell” into this management role, and that he had no formal training, however through his PR and publicity experience, once celebrities such as cricket legend Greg Matthews and Boxing Champion Jeff Fenech were on board, his business grew from there. In discussing how Israel should campaign against the negative publicity it receives, Markson explains that it is all about the “sizzle factor” and PR is a challenge. It is important to sell the positives and the glamour of Israel in order to combat the negativity that exists in the media. In doing so, “perception becomes a reality.” During Q&A when asked who he would or wouldn’t like to manage, Markson in no unequivocal way, said he would never represent David Hicks as he didn’t approve of his Anti-Semitic beliefs but that he would love to take on President Obama once he finishes his term in office.

This lunch also paid tribute to outgoing Yachad Chair Mark Kessel who is stepping down from his official position after 12 years involvement (including 3 years as Yachad chair which followed his 4 years as Young UIA chairman). He will continue to be involved and his input and efforts will be greatly missed. In his final speech as Chair, Mark referenced a passage in parsha Re’eh which (paraphrasing) said the people of Israel will be surrounded by enemies. He reminded us how relevant that is today and has always been. He finished with the point that we in the Diaspora are the only friends Israel can rely upon – stressing the need for us as a community to continue to unite in support for Israel. He suggested the best way for us to do this was through buying ‘Israel-made’ products, travelling to Israel and supporting organizations such as the United Israel Appeal.

The annual Key Workers Mission is an 11 night/12 day Israel program. For many first time travellers or those who haven’t been in Israel for a long period of time, the Mission introduces people to the State of Israel, its history, the current economic, social and political situations and most importantly the work of Keren Hayesod-UIA. Furthemore, participating children are provided with the foundations of Ahavat Israel (love of Israel) and a stepping stone for their later and further engagement with the Jewish State. In conceptualizing how long it takes for strong bonds to form between friends, ten days does not seem like a long time at all. Thanks to the organisers - the United Israel Appeal of Australia, the Arava Australia Partnership Group, Bialik College and with JNF support, just weeks ago, this 10-day experience was shared by 15 Bialik students and the delegation of 14 students from our partner community from the Central Arava Region in Israel. Throughout their short time together the students engaged in educational activities with a specific focus on “Personal Jewish and Zionist Identity” and “Comparing Judaism within Israel and in the Diaspora”. Additionally, there were activities throughout the visit that further forged the students’ connections with one another. The evening was held at one of the host

families’ homes, whereby our students and their guests battled it out in an evening of trivia, asking questions and completing challenges revolving around Israel and others contemporary Zionist themes.

Through the day-long outings to Lake Mountain and a tour of the city, all host students and their billets shared experiences that they won’t soon forget! Nothing quite says “I love you” like a snowball in the back! When asked to describe their experiences over the Arava delegation’s stay in Melbourne, our students’ responses included comments such as:

“It was an amazing way to connect to Israel; through the personal relationships we’ve made”.

“Whoever thought that kids here would have so much in common with kids in Israel”,

“Now we feel a real and tangible connection to the land we’ve been hearing about for so long” and “I can’t wait to get to Israel at the end of this year to see our friends again”. It certainly seems as though strong bonds were made despite their short time together. This program is one that has achieved all its aims and more. All involved should be congratulated and feel incredibly proud of constructing and actualizing such a brilliant, engaging and important experience. Kol Ha Kavod!
