Insurance degree, in addition to dual degree programs withtwo higher education institutions in Michigan. Olivet isaccredited by the North Central Association of Collegesand Schools.

The college offers opportunities for students to getinvolved in more than 20 c lubs and organizat ions.Approximately 40 percent of all Olivet students participatein athletics on a non-scholarship basis.

Olivet consistently has one of the most diverse studentpopulations of any private institution in Michigan. In atypical year, the student body includes 19 percent minoritystudents and international students from six countries. Allof this makes the campus community a microcosm of theworld – an ideal place for learning to live and work in theglobal society of the 21st century.

WOMEN’S TENNIS TEAM LOOKS TOBREAK WINS RECORD IN 2010

Last year, the Olivet College women’s tennis team tied theschool record for wins with 10. With six returning letterwinners,including five starting singles players, the Comets are optimisticthey can break the record in2010.

Leading the way for Olivetwil l be senior captain CelesteGruber (Sou th Haven) . Amainstay in the lineup since herf reshman season , she i sexpected to play at No. 3 singlesand No. 2 doubles.

A lso re turn ing and be inglooked to for leadership is GianaGuerra (Lansing/Waverly). Shefinished her rookie campaign witha team-leading 13 wins in singlesplay and 12 in doubles play.

MARY ANNE MCMULLEN

Mary Anne McMullen begins her 10thseason as head coach of the Olivet Collegewomen’s tennis team.

Over the last nine years, McMullen hashelped build the Comets into a solid program.In 2004, Olivet won six matches. The biggestwin was 6-3 over Alma College, which snappeda 104-match los ing streak in MichiganIntercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) play.In 2005, McMullen’s Comets bettered the 2004

win total by three with nine victories. In addition, Olivet had a player earnAll-MIAA honors for the first time in school history. In 2006, the Cometswon eight matches. In 2007, Olivet won a school-record 10 matches andRachel Vilums ’07 became a three-time All-MIAA player. Last season,the Comets tied the school record with 10 wins.

McMullen earned a bachelor’s degree in sociology and anthropologyfrom Olivet in 2001. While a student, she was a member of the golf andtennis teams.

ASSISTANT COACH

MATT WAIT

Matt Wait serves as assistant women’stennis coach at Olivet. In addition to his coachingduties, he is director of the Global Citizen HonorsProgram, director of judicial affairs and assistantprofessor of interdisciplinary studies.

Wait, a 1999 Olivet graduate, was a four-year letterwinner on the men’s soccer team. Healso earned a law degree from the MichiganState University College of Law in May 2003.

The recruiting class consists of freshmen Caitlin LaValley(Ba t t le Creek /Pennf ie ld ) andKel ly S tephens (Troy /TroyAthens). LaValley, an All-Stateselection in high school, is goingto cont r ibu te ear ly on in herco l l ege ca ree r and has thepotential to play at No. 1 singlesand No. 1 doubles. Stephensspecializes in doubles and looksto bring her doubles’ acumen tothe team.

The Comets open their seasonby hosting the inaugural CometDoubles Class at Minges CreekAthletic Club. They then travel toHilton Head Island, S.C. for theirannual spring break tr ip. Afterreturning from spring break, Theteam will face non-conference andMichigan Intercollegiate AthleticAssociation opponents, as it seeksto set a new mark of excellence inOlivet College women’s tennis.
