President’s MessageTo all who revere the magic of water media paintings,

2010 is a benchmark in so many ways for NWS . . .and we are CELEBRATING!

It is our 90th anniversary! Looking back over 90 years, many, many changes in painting styles and our precious American culture have occurred. In that time we have endured wars, the depression, disasters and plenty of uncertainty. When one looks over the art featured by NWS in that time, it is a reflection of the events and a testament of the determination of the artists behind the works. It was the crucible of those events which helped so many artists develop. One might say, these events were what helped forge NWS. These events often inspired artists to bring new ideas and clear artistic authenticity to America via this society. It was NWS which provided the platform for so many artists to be recognized, but it also brought something else: a standard of excellence to which to aspire.

Once per year, we bring those who excel at watercolor to prominence. Those works selected to be in our national exhibitions are the best the country has to offer at any one moment. To be accepted into this show requires effort and dogged dedication in pursuit of excellence. Often, painters work for decades to develop their talent and skills enough to be accepted into our national exhibitions. And such achievement and sacrifice deserves special recognition. NWS congratulates all the artists, past and present, who have been juried into these prestigious exhibitions.

And speaking of sacrifice, we are also celebrating those artists who have put aside their personal lives for a period of time in order to advance the good of the National Watercolor Society by serving as leaders of the society . . . .the past presidents of NWS. They are the people who have worked hard, often in the face of opposition, to advance the society and its prestige. Evidence of those sacrifices and work stands as our new NWS headquarters building. I can attest this was hard won with commitment and endless effort by many people! We celebrate and take our collective hats off to these men and women for their contributions which have brought our society to the standing of today.

This year’s show is unique. It is an amazing collection of works from all over the country and spans all styles of painting with examples of extraordinary originality, content and painting prowess. Our jurors, Mark Mehaffey, Carla O’Connor and John Salchak worked hard to offer up a show which was balanced and displayed the high standards of excellence and artistic leadership for which NWS is famous. Our awards juror, Mr. Christopher Schink, was a perfect addition to this jury’s objectives and standards. We extend our thanks and special appreciation for their efforts and selections.

In all, this show is definitely a benchmark of progress, artistic excellence and, frankly, honor. For me, it is an honor to serve this fine body and the principles for which it stands. To the artists, the award winners, the past presidents, the board of directors, the new signature members; you all have much of which to be very, very proud!

Sincerely,M.E. “Mike” Bailey, President

Juror of Awards — Christopher Schink

French Cafe Series - The Couple28" x 40" (Mixed Media)

BiographyCalifornia artist, author, and

teacher, Christopher Schink has received national and international recognition for both his painting and teaching. He is the author of three popular books on watercolor and the co-editor of The Palette Magazine. His paintings have appeared in numerous regional and national exhibitions and several one-man museum shows. Mr. Schink has conducted workshops in 45 states in the U.S. as well as classes in Canada, Mexico, Australia, and Europe. He has served as juror for over 40 state, regional, national, and international exhibitions.

Mr. Schink was born and raised in Palo Alto, California and received a B.A. degree from Stanford University in 1959. He studied privately with Rex Brandt, Edward Betts, and Barse Miller. Mr Schink’s home and studio are in Santa Rosa, California.

I always feel honored to be asked to judge the work of my fellow-artists and I feel especially honored to be invited to be the judge of awards for this year’s National Watercolor Society Annual Exhibition. I also feel a responsibility, not to choose the best paintings in the show (because art is subjective, that would be impossible), but to identify and award the paintings I find most exciting. I search for the paintings that I feel most reveal to me the artists’ imagination, passion, sincerity, and involvement. For me, technique is a secondary concern; the artist’s skill must only be sufficient to carry the intended ideas and feelings of his painting. I’m more concerned with passion than with performance.

What made my job difficult was that there were so many paintings that interested and excited me. I congratulate the award winners for their fine work.

Christopher Schink

What a huge honor it has been to be selected to review the more than 1100 entries for this the 90th National Watercolor Society Exhibition. There were so many creative, imaginative and technically wonderful paintings submitted that it took hours and hours of work to put together this year’s show. But it was joyful work!

I, along with my fellow jurors, Carla O’Connor and John Salchak, extend my hearty congratulations to the 100 artists whose outstanding work will make up this year’s show. These paintings represent the width and breadth of water media today. Emotional content, refreshing design, and imagination were the priorities of the day. This is a broad, exciting show that will be a feast for the eyes and hearts of all.

Congratulations also to all who entered. As artists, we put our heart into our work and the disappointment of not being accepted can be almost palpable. Continue to share your vision and to think of shows not as competitions, but as opportunitiies to share the visual representation that is uniquely yours. Keep on. We want to see that next painting!

Welcome to the new signature members. The standards are high. You can be proud of your achievement. Please do not rest now but keep up the hard work.

A very special “thank you” to Carla and Jim whose vision and professionalism made the adjudication process very enjoyable. Together we thank the board, president Mike Bailey, and all of the many volunteers who made the whole process simply wonderful.

Enjoy the show!

Keith CrownNWS President 1959 Watercolor master Keith Crown was born on May 27, 1918 in Keokuk, Iowa. As a youth growing up in Gary, Indiana he developed an interest in art that continued to lead him throughout his life. Following his high school graduation Keith enrolled at the Art Institute of Chicago. For the next four years he learned from his instructors and the masterworks that lined the museum walls and storerooms. The outbreak of World War II and the draft threw him into the midst of the war in the Pacific. Throughout the war, Crown filled sketchbooks with images of war and his surroundings. He was designated his regiment’s unofficial artist with assignments as diverse as aerial maps, articles for Yank magazine, and illustrations for “A History of the 161st Infantry.” In 1945, he was discharged, and returned to Chicago. 1946 became a pivotal year for Keith, he received a BFA from the Art Institute, his work was included in two exhibitions, and he was offered a teaching position at the University of Southern California. Away from his classes at USC, he struggled to find himself artistically. His work had evolved from realism to several forms of abstraction. With every painting he was challenging himself and growing as he developed new methods and vocabularies. By the end of the decade Keith began using spray paint on his images, perhaps the first artist since Mexican muralist David Siqueiros (in the 1930’s) to do so. With his family in tow, he often improvised while painting on location using an over-inflated tire as a compressor and working in inclement weather. Thunderstorms and

lightning became subjects and ice crystals literally formed on the paper to become a part of his evolving compositions. Manhattan Beach, California; Taos, New Mexico; and Illinois grasslands, farms and cities, all became fodder for his masterworks. Keith gained signature status in the California Water Color Society (now NWS) in 1949. His work has been included in 38 Society exhibitions and travel shows and garnered many awards including three Purchase Awards. He became 1st Vice President in 1958, President in 1959, and Pdvisor in 1960. In 2009, he was awarded the National Watercolor Society Lifetime Achievement Award. “When an artist moves out into the area of truth, when the work is most original, he must be a most lonely person. For except in a most general way, he finds no one traveling with him, or in his exact

direction. Nor is there a predecessor (precisely) - but he must have courage and confidence in his own strength - his own ethics - to see him to truth.” He died in Columbia, Missouri on January 31, 2010.

Lee Jesse WexlerNWS President 1987 Fine artist, educator, designer, and muralist Lee Wexler was born on April 7, 1925 in Los Angeles, CA. Followiing his high school graduation Lee enlisted in the US Army Air Corps and served with an intelligence unit in the India, China, Burma Theater creating technical aerial maps for flights covering the Burma Road. He was discharged in 1946 and enrolled at UCLA in 1948. The next decade marked choices that changed his life forever. He began exhibiting in 1950. He was married, earned his BA, and began teaching high school art in 1951. He received an MFA in design from USC and accepted a professorship to California State University, Los Angeles in 1959. During his time at Cal State he continued painting and exhibiting. Lee opened a design firm in the 60’s and added murals to his list of accomplishments in the 70’s. Lee gained signature membership in the National Watercolor Society in 1977. His work with the Society has included paintings in eighteen Society exhibitions and travel shows

and he received the NWS Purchase Award in 1978. He served as 1st Vice President in 1979 and President in 1987. Lee has also held memberships in the International Congress of Graphic Design, Georgia Watercolor Society, Watercolor Society of Alabama, and the Northwest Watercolor Society. He served on the NWWS board for many years and guided the development of their Northwest Watercolor Foundation of which he was president from 1998 to 2006. Lee fell in love with the northwest while on a trip from California and moved to Washington’s Whidbey Island in 1992. Fully encompassed into the northwest’s art community, his work became increasingly personal. Seattle’s Wing Luke Museum added Wexler’s twenty-one painting series of the Manzanar Japanese Relocation Camp to their permanent collection in 1995. He died in Clinton, Washington on June 6, 2010.

With an exciting vision and a new appreciation for an old art form, the California Water Color Society was founded in 1920. As the country grew, painters found inspiration in the expansive western lands and were, in their way, pioneers of a new spirit.

The name of the society has changed twice since that time: first in 1967, to California National Watercolor Society; then in 1975, when the members voted to become simply the National Watercolor Society.

The first exhibition was held at the Los Angeles Museum of History, Science and Art, which later became the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. The first twenty-five annual exhibitions were held there.

From 1946 through the early 1960s, they were often at the Pasadena Art Museum but also in Santa Barbara, San Diego, and the San Francisco area. From the late 1960s through the 1970s, Laguna Beach Museum of Art was most often the host gallery, in addition to the Otis Art Institute and the Palm Springs Desert Museum. Throughout the 1980s to the present time, the annual shows have been held at, in alternate years, the Brea Civic Cultural Center and the Muckenthaler Cultural Center in Fullerton.

Though the Annual Exhibition is the most important event, with an extensive illustrated catalog to accompany it, various other activities have been planned during the year.

Throughout the 1950s a biennial drawing and print show was presented. Most years there is a show only for Signature Members. In 1956 the Exhibit of California and Canadian

Watercolours was held in both countries. In 1960 Mexico City hosted La Sociedad de Acuarelistes de California. The past presidents were honored in 1976 and 1987 with shows at the Brand Library Art Center.

Although NWS is obviously an exhibiting society, it is also an educating society. The slides of its annual exhibitions are available through a rental program. Its travel shows visit collegiate and public galleries and museums throughout the United States and Canada. Special written materials are often prepared for these institutions. In conjunction with the annual exhibitions, lectures and orientation programs are made available to docents of the host museums. To broaden the collections of watercolors accessible to the public, the Society donated twenty-five paintings spanning the early years (1925-1954) to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. The selections from 1955 to 1980 were on loan to the Laguna Beach Museum of Art until 1989.

As an additional service to the public, an Associates membership category has been implemented. People who are interested in watercolor, or art in general, may become Associates and attend openings, shows, and Society events. They receive all the NWS publications and may submit work for the juried shows for the same fees as Signature Members. This membership provides an opportunity for involved patronage by those who wish to appreciate, encourage, and support the efforts of the society.

In recent years, in an effort to reach members throughout the country, regional representatives have been organized to stay in touch with board activities in California. It is a way to plan shows in different areas and to find new locations for travel shows, which are selected from annual exhibitions. Regional invitational shows have been held in Colorado and Arizona.

In January 1993 the NWS exhibited, for the first time, watercolors from its permanent collection, featuring award-winning works from the 1955 to 1985 Annual Exhibitions. The show was held at the County of Los Angeles Century Gallery in Sylmar, California.

In 1995 all available NWS archival material including slides of our show, catalogs and records were sorted, classified and delivered on August 30,1995 to the Smithsonian Institution Branch Office located in the Huntington Library, San Marino, California. This material has now been accepted under a "Deed of Gift" and has become an official part of the Smithsonian Archives of American Art. When processed, this material will be accessible to everyone through the information highway.

In 1999, the National Watercolor Society found and purchased a building at 915 South Pacific Avenue, San Pedro, California, 90731-3201. This has become the Society’s center for offices, gallery, workshops and a place to house our growing permanent collection. The All Member Exhibition was held in this building in 2009.
