PRESIDENTS REPORT
November 2010
Wow! What a time we had on Jag Day. Despite some early showers we had a terrific turnout with
Mk 4, 5, Daimlers and assorted others models featuring on the high side of the path. What a rare
spectacle that was. Well done to Bob Charman and his committee of helpers that made the day
look seamless. Also thankyou to the registers that provided marshals. You can also bet that Di
Adamson was working hard behind the scenes to pull off such a professional event.
In the five years of being a club member I’m still abuzz when I see one Jaguar, let alone a paddock
full! I now believe the rumor that once infected with Jaguaritis, you’re marqued for life.
The General Manager of Jaguar in Australia, Kevin Goult flew all the way from Sydney on his day off
just to attend our event. For those of you who had the pleasure of talking with him you can see that
his enthusiasm for the marque is the equal of ours. It seems that Jaguar is doing well in difficult
times and, mark my words; I believe that the future of Jaguar will be as exciting as it was in the
1960’s. See if I’m not right.
It is now November, so if my memory serves me correctly that means December will soon be upon
us. So get ready for the host of Club and Register Christmas functions that will abound. If we’re not
already a social enough bunch then December will certainly slake your thirst. And don’t forget the
Murray Bridge Race Day, Club Christmas Show and of course the Compact Register’s Riverland
Weekend.
The Presentation Dinner is now done and dusted so thanks to Carmel, Noel and Judy for taking over
the baton and organising another great event.

GENERAL BUSINESS:
1. Historic Vehicle Registration in Joint Names.
Bob Kretschmer advised that he has started the process of having his 1 ½ litre car insured & registered in Joint names from October when the current Reg. Expires. A response from the Federation will take too long. Insurance just completed without difficulty. Registration is a more complicated matter involving a Transfer starting from scratch with a new MR334. Other
factors involved include the 2nd person also being a member of an approved Club, Registration Renewal Certificate & Historic No. Plate Agreement (if applicable). There are likely to be additional problems for Numeric plates.
When the project is complete, Bob will issue a concise procedure for distribution to persons concerned.
Readers of these Minutes (inc.Classic Marque) Stay Tuned & do NOT pester the Rego Office to avoid them booking time against the Scheme.

Annual Dinner Saturday 30th October; Malcolm issued tickets to those concerned
SA Jaguar Day; There will be a dedicated display area for pushrod engine cars. Malcolm will
check with Bob Charman & took the names of 5 volunteer marshalls.

Jack & Jean’s MK V Jaguar Journey – PART 1
My journey into classic cars began in the UK about 28 years ago when I purchased a silver Reliant Scimitar
GTE for wife Jean’s birthday (known as the Princess Ann car). All went well until a few years later after an
altercation with a Canadian driving on the wrong side of the road, whereby the car suffered a severely
damaged front. We decided to do a complete body-off restoration and also changed the colour to British
Racing Green – total job about one year.
At that time Jean was PA to a company director who himself was into classic cars, MGs to be precise, and
when he saw the newly restored and painted car he asked Jean if I would be interested in another project – an
old Jaguar that was being restored, but the restorer was himself terminally ill and would unfortunately not be
around to finish it.
I went to look at the Jaguar, in a very old barn. I was horrified. Everything that should have been on it was off it
– wings, doors, sunroof, boot lid, even the engine and gearbox were missing. The only things on were four
wheels, body tub and petrol tank. At first I thought
no, too big a job, but was then informed that some
of the body parts had already been repaired
including the sills, three of the doors, three wings
(luckily two were the front ones), the bonnet and
boot. The engine was in pieces and in several large
boxes, but the block and head had been
refurbished.
I thought if the price was right I might be tempted,
and at ₤500 (approx $1250) I was. In July 1996 I
paid ₤30 to a guy with a trailer to bring AFL 70
home. Jean bought me a genuine workshop manual
and parts list for my birthday. I joined the JDC SS Register and would now try to get this car back on the road.
PART 2
The first thing to do was to get everything in order. Luckily the previous restorer had labeled everything as he
took it apart so I boxed everything as appropriate – parts for the driver’s door, the boot lid, bonnet etc. The
engine and gearbox were the first things I started on. I bought a full gasket set from the UK SS Register and,
following the workshop manual, set to work. Two weeks later engine was completed – the only part missing
was the gearbox drive for the rev counter. I sourced a used one through the club. I then attacked the water
pump, carburettors, distributor and dynamo – once they were all overhauled I attached them. The gearbox
was okay, just needed the selector rods freeing up in the top casing. Once this was done I attached it to the
engine, placed the engine on a trolley – task completed!
Next job – the chassis. With two chain blocks I winched the tub up into the roof of my garage and pushed the
chassis out into the carport, where it stayed for
the next year while the work was being done to
it. Everything was removed except for the
bottom wishbones and torsion bars. The
chassis was wire-brushed back to bare metal
and then given two coats of metal primer and
two coats of black weathershield paint. All the
shockers needed new rubbers but apart from
that they were in perfect working order.
The brake master cylinder was beyond repair
so a new one had to be bought, the wheel
cylinders needed new seals, the brake pipes
were all replaced (metal and rubber) and brake
shoes relined. A new petrol pump was needed and the petrol tank was sent for cleaning and plastic coated on
7
the inside. The steering was then overhauled – steering box, top and bottom swivels, track rods and track rod
ends, back axle rear springs rebushed and handbrake cables sorted. Everything was de-rusted and painted
and returned to the chassis.
The wheels were painted and fitted with new radial tyres (not the town and country tyres that were on it when
purchased – Jean thought they were tractor tyres). The engine and gearbox were then fitted.
Then fate reared its ugly head. In late 2000 I started to get pain in my right leg (which previously had multiple
fractures from a motorcycle accident in 1962). The pain turned out to be the onset of osteomyelitis in my tibia,
which resulted in surgery to remove 20cm of the tibia and replace it with part of my fibula, and the leg was put
in a framework for the next eight months so very little work was done until summer 2002.
PART 3
The only things I was capable of doing during my medical lay-off were the chrome work and woodwork. I had
the chroming done at Premier Plating (the best chromers in our area) and as Greg the boss was an ardent fan
of Jaguars he did all the plating for me at a cheaper rate.
The woodwork I did myself, and managed to get the veneer locally. All the damaged wood was removed and
new veneer glued on and rubbed back. Many coats of Rustins Plastic Coating was applied (being rubbed back
in between coats) and then a final polish – I was very pleased with the results.
After I removed the body from the chassis it was lowered on to trestles so I could work underneath, but now I
was reasonably mobile again and it was time to get to work. The floor and spare wheel compartment just
needed de-rusting and painting, same as the chassis. Of the eight suspension points that mate up with the
chassis, four had completely rusted away, along with their special bolts. I made a pattern in aluminium then
had four made in mild steel, which I welded to the body. I made new bolts, had 20 thick rubber washers made
and stuck them to the chassis. I then fitted a new stainless steel exhaust system, pushed it under the body
and bolted the whole lot back together. I then assembled the doors one at a time with new window rubbers
and then the boot lid and sun roof.
Next job was to fit the radiator and tie rods which have the supports attached to hold up the front wings. After
that little job I bolted on the wings, repaired the driver’s side rear wing and bolted both onto the body, then
attacked the electrics. Luckily the wiring loom was in pretty good shape so, after replacing globes, checking
wires and connections, everything worked except for the fuel gauge.
In 2004 our daughter and her family informed us they were applying for immigration to Oz, and in December
2005 were successful. Jean and I both decided we would also try for immigration and in 2006 we too were
successful. I closed my engraving business after 26 years and Jean retired and we got set for the move. When
the container company came to see what we would be taking, No. 1 on my list was the Mk V. They said a 40ft
container would do the job but the car had to be all together or I had to list all items not attached on a parts
list. Luckily we found this out just before my son-in-law Gary Williams left for Oz so he welded and leaded the
right rear corner and sprayed it in primer, planning to finish the paint job in Oz.
The next two months were spent putting everything on or in: carpets, seats, windows, bonnet and all chrome
work so it was a whole car (theoretically) and in June I drove the Mk V 200 yards down the road and into a
lorry to go and be put in the container along with our house contents for shipping. In August we followed.
PART 4 - The Final Leg
The Mk V was delivered to our home a month after we arrived as it had to have a separate import licence. The
trouble with moving to a new house in a new country is that there is much work to be done. Acquiring
transport, furniture, decorating the property – the list was endless. So yes, once again the Mk V went into
hibernation for about a year until household things were taken care of and then, hooray, I stripped the car
apart again; all the interior, bonnet, chrome work, bumpers and windows.
Where to start? Then I remembered the warning about overheating in SA so the water pump went to Bruce
Fletcher for modification and the bonnet sides went to Lobethal to have new ones made with louvres. I then
dealt with a few electrical problems: the fuel gauge and sender went for repairs, wires were run for the
8
trafficators, window washers were wired in and the low-tone horn needed repairing. During this time I saw an
article in the JDC (UK) magazine of a Mk V Drophead fitted with wire wheels, with the spats cut and wired to
miss the spinners. Jean said, “Let’s do it to ours”, so I made a cardboard pattern and went back to Lobethal to
have them modified. We loved the result; thought it made the rear look less bulky.
Now the hard work started on rubbing back and filling all the paintwork, and after many hours of wet and dry
my fingertips were totally smooth with no visible fingerprints. I masked up the car and the primer went on. It
was then we decided on a colour change from black and grey to two-tone blue and Jean chose the final
colours. My son-in-law Gary sprayed all the light blue first but did the darker blue in three stages (due to lack
of space in the garage to do it all at once), then the clear coat was applied and then even more rubbing back –
but the results were very pleasing.
I then proceeded to put it back together and after many weeks work the car was ready to go to Jason’s for all
the interior to be done: the headlining, door cards, carpets and seats. After six months I got the car back for
Christmas 2009. Doctor Don Evans came in the New Year to check the timing, carbies and brakes, then it was
down to Bob Jane’s for tracking; the front was found to be 2¾ inches too high. Next trip was to Regency Park
for registration, but on the way back we boiled up; it turned out the thermostat had stuck and split open. Don
modified the housing to take a modern thermostat. When I went to register the car I managed to get MKV 350,
so goodbye to AFL 70.
The first club run to Victor Harbour ended with the car being trailered home, where it was found that glass
beads from when the head was overhauled in the UK had found their way into the oilway and got pulled down
No. 1 cylinder, seizing the rings and piston. The Mk V got home on Monday afternoon, and by Tuesday
afternoon Dr Don had the engine stripped and all the pistons out on the bench. The following Monday the
engine was back together and running. Don managed to hone out the damage in the bore but we needed a
new piston and rings and the oil pump was damaged – but Bruce Fletcher had a decent one (among the eight
in his garage). During this lay-up I sent my rev counter and speedo to Strathalbyn for overhaul; they are now
rock-steady and even my clock is running. I have covered over 1000 miles and we even attended the recent
MK V Wagga run with no problems at all and enjoy being behind the wheel every time I go out in it.
Would I take on a project like that again? Most definitely yes. I have just seen the advert in the JCCC mag for
a Mk VII which uses the chassis etc of a Mk V, but I don’t think Jean would be very happy. But I can dream,
can’t I? Then again, it is very satisfying to take a 1950 bag of bones and turn it into a classic car that I hope
will still be running when I’m not.
Thanks to all these people for their help: SA Auto Instruments, Lobethal Sheet Metal, NEAT Upholstery, All
type paints, Chrome Masters, Fitch the Rubber Man, Garry Williams (son-in-law) & All members of JCCC for
help and information.
And a special thanks to Dr Don Evans.
Don, without your help and knowledge
over the past four years I don't think my
Mk V would be where it is now. It is
greatly appreciated. And to Margaret for
the endless cups of coffee and biscuits
every time I called.
My heartfelt thanks.
From the editor: A great resto story and a
beautiful car.

SA JAG DAY 2010 SA Jag Day was another successful event for Adelaide. Apart from a little rain and a bitter wind
in the morning, we managed to get over 125 Jaguars on display. President Rick Luff provided excellent commentary on the marques throughout the day and had a nice gathering of people who followed him around intently listening to the history of our beloved cats.
For those who assisted in marshalling, regalia and general duties – THANK YOU. This is what this club is all about.
Every year SA Jag Day gets better and better. Next year’s preparations are already underway with a few surprises in stall. Don’t forget, this is a South Australian events so, if you have ideas, please pass them on to the organisers. -Ed

Don & Kathy Tyrrell: Kathy’s car going well. Mk 10 in shed is OK. The other one is pain in the
behind. Master cylinder overhauled. Needs new power booster. May make Jag Day with two
cars.
Noel & Carmel Trew: N.T.R. but put the XJ in for service last week.
Borys Potiuch: Been on holidays in the Top End in the Kombi. Jag on blocks, has diff problem.
Has to go in for service.
Stewart Perkins: Came in from Angle Vale and the car stopped 7 times. Seems to have sucked
up some rubbish from the left tank and into the carbies.
Martin O’Dea: Just a short report. Took the car to Goolwa and it went well for the first
100kms and would you believe it, the old fuel problem started again. At this stage he’s had
more mechanics than they have at Cape Canaveral look at it and it’s still not fixed.
Graeme Moore: Went to Gumeracha and the car went well.
Chris Michael: Haven’t driven the Mk 10 for 5 month until now and it’s OK. Will be at Jag Day.
Roy Malandain: Car started and it got to the meeting OK.
James Mann: Transmission leak. Had it soldered but started leaking again.
Darryl & Fay Leyton: Sovereign had transmission leak. Car was parked on angle. Put on the
flat and leak stopped. Derek has flat battery but will be back on track soon as Darryl is back to
full work driving his trains.
14
Hayden Isaac: After last meeting got almost home when lights started to dim and then car
stopped. Called R.A.A. Got home about 1am. Had regulator fixed and is now OK. Just bought a
little Smart car.
John & Claire Evans: John was working in his shed with a circular saw.
When Claire went to see where their Grandson was, she found him standing on a piece of
wood in the shed, stating it was very noisy in here. We think John had glued his feet to the
board.
Timothy Dunning: In at Sovereign having the Diff done. Been getting noisy for about a year.
Bob & Daphne Charman: Took Big Red to have paint spots checked out. Rust spots found. All
fixed and had the entire lower half of the car repainted. Ready for Jag Day.
David Bicknell: Car waiting for new transmission. Whilst in London saw a place with 50 Jags
and also saw a ‘D’ type actually being driven past !
Steve Attard: Put plans into council for new shed. Cleaned up the Jag for Jag Day.
Pete & Kathy Taylor: XJ Coupe had recent tune up on gas. Ready for Sunday. XJS running well
but still with slight miss. Still for sale but not advertised yet.
Meeting closed 8.30pm
Next meeting: Wednesday, 10th November, 2010.

How Time Flies
By Ray Thomas
It was almost a year ago now that I made first contact with the Jaguar Drivers Club at the Jag Day
held at West Lakes Shores. As I strolled along the rows of beautiful classic cars in various states of
repair the thoughts that had been going through my mind were cemented, I am definitely going
to get myself that old Jag that I’ve always wanted. (Wife permitting of course)
I had only a couple of weeks prior to this revelation rang an auction house to see if a car I had
been watching had been sold, ahhh! It hadn’t! So I was going to have a look at this Mk 2 Jag with
the aim of making an offer to purchase, so I rang to confirm my intended arrival to view this car,
as I did this I was told it has just been driven out of the shed. (The person in the Jag club who
beat me to it knows who he is!)
Getting back to the topic. As I walked through the rows of majestic cars I stopped at the Jag
regalia tent and asked. Who could I talk to in relation to what is available and a few points to be
cautious of when buying an older car? I was headed in the direction of a couple of people of
whose names escape me at this point. But I do remember the manner in which I was spoken to.
These people could not do enough to help me they showed me numerous cars and of course the
model they had themselves was definitely the best to have.
Alas it wasn’t quite that simple financial restrictions had to be considered as well as being at
entry level to car restoration and repair I had to be a little cautious. After speaking to a number
of people a person approached me and began talking to me about a car he had just purchased at
an auction house. Low and behold it was the person who had just beaten me to the Mk 2. What
to do? Bag it or admire it I decided on the latter and we had a real good conversation and he
explained what was and what wasn’t available in SA and a number of points to watch out for.
One of the common statements was to, come along meet a few people and join the club. My
intention was to do this, but before I knew it, I stumbled across a car in NSW which ticked most
of the boxes and before I knew it the green beast was on its way to SA in the back of a truck sight
unseen but for a small photo and a number of phone calls (so much for being cautious). That
story is for another day.
I had applied to become club member, but due to the time of year and meetings being not being
held over Christmas/ New Year it was difficult to get my membership approved and ratified.
However those people in the club who were involved with the membership and inspection went
out of their way to make it happen. Noel Trew and Don Evans were brilliant and even though it
was a little frustrating having a car but no ability to drive it these fine gentlemen moved heaven
and earth to make things happen and I would again like to offer my thanks for their efforts. As I
spend more time at the club I am finding there are many such people, more than willing to help
and go the extra yard to help with whatever they can.
Finally the day came I was ratified as a member, then car, it had already had a numbers check at
Regency Park and was OK so with temporary permit in hand I took the car in to be checked by
Don I was made more than welcome and was very impressed by his stock of fine cars. I noticed
that it was almost like a bee hive but for Jags as more and more people turned up with their cars
to talk about and fix any issues they may be having.
All signed off and away I went to get my log book this was done by Peter Holland and he was
good enough to do it on the day so what was next? Number plates? So back to Regency Park and
my plates were there as I had ordered them some time ago based on the information on the year
the car was made. I had received from the prior owner of the car which in the end was incorrect.
16
Not to worry, not many would pick the difference between the plates and the vehicles actual
year of make.
Since that time I have enjoyed a number of pleasant drives in my Mark 2 Jag and attended a
coupe’ of functions mainly the Uraidla All British day (My cars Debut) the Compact registers
Christmas dinner, a number of the meetings and the latest Jag club day which I was able to show
my own car.
Unfortunately I travel a fair deal in my job so I miss a number of the register meetings and also
the club general meetings but I must give thanks to Geoff Thomas (no relation) one of the many
fine people in the club who has assisted me in many Jag matters during the time as, well as Evan
for the work he does and helps me do on my car.
I intend to be more active within the club and give back some of what the club has given me and
I suppose that’s part of what this little story is about, I have supplied a couple of photos for the
web in the past and also for the calendar (alas didn’t make the cut) I even wrote a reply to one of
Ricks articles but was maybe a little tough with my reply and ended up on the editors floor.
In closing I would like to thank all those in the club who have assisted me in my rookie year and
would encourage any others in the club to join in and have a go, send in a photo write an article
have your say, put in that suggestion remember it’s our club and it can only be a good as what
we make it.
Remember the tasks taken on in the club are busy and require a fair bit of time so when one of
these fine people go out of their way or go the extra mile to assist you a simple thanks as a show
of appreciation can be a much appreciated gesture.
Do have a Merry festive season and drive safely, it’s not just you who could be hurt you may
damage your Jag.
Thanks
Ray Thomas

Fort Glanville
BANGBANGBANGBANGFort Glanville was visited by club members on the 19 September. A BYO lunch was had
around 1pm before the first firing of the cannons.
The BANG got louder and louder as the cannons got bigger and bigger - complete with
smoke.
A volunteer at the Fort escorted us around the facility giving us historic information
like; “Did you know the Fort was built in the 1860’s as a defence against the Russian
invasion by sea during the Crimean War -
Florence Nightingale and all that”.
The Fort was again put on full alert during
the 1914 -18 War.
Parades of period military uniforms dating
around 1880 were performed between
cannon firing. Photos were taken by Geoff
Thomas. Inspection of the various
underground tunnels and on site museum
was enjoyed by club members who
increased their historic knowledge.
Another fort was built at Largs Bay and is now used as a police academy while yet
another was planned at North Glenelg but did not eventuate – hence Military Road.
In all, a pleasant day with good weather.
Thanks
Rob Smith

All Jaguar car enthusiasts
Autumn is a special time of the year in Canberra with its changing colours of nature and this
makes a great setting for the 42nd National Jaguar Rally in 2011. The Jaguar Drivers’ Club of
Canberra is hosting this event and has planned a full and varied program of activities that
should cater to all interests.
The theme of our Rally will be the 50th anniversary of the release of the E Type Jaguar. There
will be special displays of this model at a couple of the planned events and we are
encouraging all owners of E Type Jaguars to join in the Rally celebrations in Canberra at
Easter 2011. Of course, the nature of a National Rally is that all Jaguar owners are
encouraged to attend and the greater the variety of different Jaguar models, the better the
Rally.
Many enthusiasts use the National Rally as the means of maintaining contact with distant
friends made over the years and this helps contribute to the spirit of the event. The Rally is
also an opportunity to make new friends. We hope the plans we have for the Rally will help
bring these opportunities together.
Our Rally headquarters will be a recently refurbished hotel near the city that has secure
parking. There will be a number of accommodation options including apartments with
undercover parking. As the Canberra Rally usually attracts a large number of Jaguar
enthusiasts from around Australia, I would encourage anyone contemplating attendance to
lodge their applications early to ensure their accommodation preferences are met. In
particular, I would urge those intending to participate in the concours events to register early to
ensure the option of covered secure parking for their vehicles.
We will also have a rare print for auction at the formal dinner that portrays events at Le Mans
in the 1950’s and also has the signatures of a number of the notable Jaguar players of that
era. This is an opportunity to secure a piece of Jaguar history that is not likely to be repeated
easily. The print (and authentication documents) will be on display at the Welcome Reception
to whet your appetite.
So put Easter 2011 in your calendar for the National Jaguar Rally in Canberra. Details of the
Rally program and the registration documents are on our website at
www.jaguarnationalrally2011.org.au
We look forward to seeing you here.

Regalia Coordinator(s)
WANTED This position is now available within the Club. It is a position that suits say an enthusiastic
couple or two couples.
During 2009 – 2010 we have reduced the stock levels with a view to changing the process for
the coordinator(s). What we have in mind is for a smaller number of product lines with the
Jaguar embroidery e.g.
1. Fleecy Vests
2. Polo Shirts – men’s and ladies
3. Caps
4. Fleecy Jumpers
5. Jackets
A quantity of say 6 of each size would then be held in stock so that a member could order on-
line or at a general meeting with the coordinator(s) and the items would then be posted or
collected from a later meeting.
Ron & Claire Palmer (through Palmer Agencies) have offered to continue to supply the club
with the product lines and assist the coordinator(s) with product line choices and the
embroidery.
The club’s lock-up could be utilised for this purpose or alternatively if the member has space at
home that would be OK.
This means that at a general meeting the coordinator(s) only need bring a sample of each size
along (as the same manufacture would be used for the product lines this eliminates the need
for multiple samples). In addition to the above the various badges and other small items would
be available for sale at a meeting.
In addition the coordinator(s) would be responsible to maintain a cash float, bank sales monies,
send the banking receipt to the Treasurer, maintain stock levels, and sell Regalia at Jag Day.
Should anyone be interested in this role please either talk to Rick or me.
Regards
Tim White

Two Kiwis, Trevor and Jeanette, are walking down a street in Bondi in Sydney.
Trevor happens to look in one of the shop windows and sees a sign that catches his eye. The sign said 'Suits $10.00 each, Shirts $4.00 each, Trousers $5.00 per pair'
Trevor says to his pal, ' Jeanette, look! We could buy a whole lot of those, and whin we get beck to InZid, we could make a fortune”. “Now whin we go unto the shop, you be quiet, okay? Just lit me do all the talking cause uf they hear our accint, they might not be nice to us. I'll speak in my bist Aussie accint.”
'No worries, smiled Jeanette, I'll keep my mouth shut.'
They go in and Trevor says, 'I'll take fufty suits et $10.00 each, 100 shirts et $4.00 each, and fufty pairs of trousers et $5.00 each. I'll beck up my truck and...'
The owner of the shop interrupts, 'You're from New Zealand, aren't you?' 'Well - Yis,' says a surprised Trevor. 'How the hill dud you know thet?'
The owner says, 'This is a dry cleaners!'.
