The Diligent Workforce Heather Babiarz, Worldgate Sport and Health Club Director of
Member Services and Housekeeping, describes Christopher,
Yoon, Zeke, Kareem, David, Katin, Ross, and Steven as a
“dynamic group” with “remarkable people.” She further describes
hem as “adaptable, reliable and so very pleasant to work with.”
To read the letter that Ms. Babiarz sent one would never guess
hat this eight-person crew has multiple disabilities, with some
unable to express themselves other than using gestures.
Twice weekly for the past 5 years, this MVLE crew has
provided detailed cleaning of the three-level 116,000 square
feet Worldgate Sport and Health Club in Herndon, Virginia.
Over the years, crew members have honed their teamwork
and skills earning responsibility for almost all areas of the club.
Their duties include cleaning the floor-to-ceiling glass of the
four racquetball and 4 squash courts; sanitizing and wiping
down the yoga mats and then re-rolling and organizing them;
wiping down strength equipment and hand weights; dusting and
rash removal. Worldgate’s Ms. Babiarz describes the crew as
working with “diligence.”
Worldgate also appreciates the patience and reliability the entire
eam demonstrates when areas to be cleaned are occupied by
patrons and the team must readjust their schedule. The club “would
not be as clean and well-kept if it were not for the MVLE team.” In
addition, Ms. Babiarz hopes this “partnership lasts a lifetime.”
Throughout the Washington D.C. area, partnerships with
community businesses are providing successful employment
opportunities for individuals with disabilities. Worldgate Sport
and Health is supporting cultural change by enabling their
patrons, staff, and other businesses to recognize the excellence
his crew brings to their work instead of their disabilities. Of
equal importance, each member of the team is a successful
and valued member of their community.

Dream Journey Glenda is a 28-year veteran of MVLE’s production and bulk
mail services and co-chair of Our Voices Count, a self-advocacy
council comprised of individuals with life-long disabilities
receiving services from MVLE. Early in her life, Glenda
envisioned a future that was very different from her reality. Her
vision was to be independent and living on her own.
Cerebral palsy limits Glenda’s fine and gross motor skills and
requires her to use a wheelchair; she is also legally blind.
Glenda grew up in an era when individuals with disabilitieshad limited access to community education and services. Her
education ended after the 2nd grade and she spent the next
30+ years languishing at home. However, Glenda says her
biggest challenge was “the barrier created by people” who
assumed she was also intellectually disabled. The difficulty was
magnified as most people surrounding her assumed her goals
were unattainable. Despite these assumptions and many other
challenges she faced, including breast cancer, she pressed on.
Glenda realized her vision with tremendous perseverance along
with community services, family, and MVLE. Glenda’s sister,
along with home health care assistants have enable her to live
ndependently in her own apartment. She is an experienced
and valued employee of MVLE’s bulk mail services and people
everywhere are drawn to her ready smile and positive attitude.
However, she is still pursuing more.
Glenda’s vision for the future includes a desire for more work
and a bigger paycheck to provide her with greater discretionary
ncome- she likes to shop, but only if she has the money. She
also aspires to write an autobiography to help people with
disabilities and their families understand such challenges
and how to create a vision for themselves beyond everyone’s
assumptions…including their own.

More than Just a Job Sally Wiltsie celebrated her 25th anniversary working at
Springfield Country Club this past March as an MVLE client.
After graduating from Accotink Academy Special Education
program in 1983, Sally transitioned into MVLE where she
received work adjustment and travel training. Her ability to
perform quality work resulted in her competitive employment at
he Springfield Country Club.
As a dining room attendant, Sally sets tables for lunch, clears
he tables, refills coffee and tea, empties trash, and removes
inens part-time Monday through Friday. Not only are Sally’s
hands working to bus tables, but her heart is also working as
she welcomes each club member by name.
Sally has remained a constant for the club and enjoys the
distinct honor of being their most senior employee. She is
committed to her work and loves her job. Club staff is supportive
of Sally and appreciate her. She is very proud to work at the
Springfield Country Club with club employees, management
and the Board of Directors. “We think she is prefect for the job
and wouldn’t trade her for anything.” says Megan Napier, an
employee at the club.
MVLE Employment Counselors continue to support both Sally
and her employer so that her intellectual disability does not
prevent her from being a skillful employee. Over the past 25
years, Sally has displayed a strong and loyal work ethic with
exceptional service. Sally not only performs essential functions,
but also warmly acknowledges members and employees
providing added value for the club and its membership.

A Model for Us All What is a meaningful life? When asked that question we
may think of our families, communities, our most important
relationships, and even social challenges that inspire us. It is
rare that we think of work yet so much of our day-to-day lives
are devoted to our jobs. For many, work is a paycheck,
a struggle, or just a job. Not for Keith Yambaka.
Keith entered employment in 2004 after graduating from a
special education program in Maryland. His very first job was
with a supervised worksite at Rehabilitation Opportunity Inc.
Keith gained skills and experience in rolling posters, labeling,
and collating. But soon his abilities and hard work prepared him
o make a change. Keith’s fellow workers and supervisors saw
his drive and his desire to do and learn more.
Keith’s motivation and determination enabled him to successfully
ransition from ROI’s supervised worksite to MVLE’s competitive
worksite at Walter Reed Medical Center in the fall of 2005. With
he help of his Employment Consultant he learned how to take
public transportation, and then worked with the supervisors
at MVLE to learn his duties with a positive attitude and desire
for success.
Keith is a model employee at MVLE. He is trustworthy and
always performs his tasks independently. He is currently
responsible for trash collection, mopping the stairwells,
vacuuming designated offices, cleaning bathrooms and cleaning
he WRMC plumbing store. After these tasks are complete he
arrives at the MVLE site at WRMC to sweep the floors. He is
proud to serve MVLE with his skills and training and is enjoying
his meaningful life by working hard as a valuable member of the
WRMC custodial crew.

MVLE is continually expanding the product line and seeking
new customer markets. This year in addition to our popular
potpourri; innovative products such as scented shoe fresheners,
envelope sachets, and the Floral Décor line have been added.
Good Scents TM also provides commercial and corporate
businesses a low-cost alternative floral decoration for lobbies,
offices, and events. As a participant in the Department of
Defense’s Mentor Protégé Program we are now starting tosell into the corporate market. On the retail level, our products
continue to be successfully sold at Whole Foods and Giant
grocery stores.
Good Scents TM is a progressive venture that is building sales
volume, increasing work opportunities regardless of disability
level, recycling goods, and cheerfully serving the customers
who purchase and enjoy our products.
Potpourri, Purpose,and Paychecks
on entering the scented floral product area there are vibrant
ors and the wonderful scents of vanilla, pumpkin, apple
d lavender. The energy and enthusiasm of the employees is
most tangible. Their work is very purposeful; some carefully
oop petals and pour them into small fabric bags, others close
bags and attach a bow with the Scented Florals product tag.
ented Florals production begins at our Boston Boulevard
ation where donated flowers from area supermarkets are
ivered. The flowers are then dried into piles of colorful
als used for making a variety of Good Scents TM products.
Chantilly, the materials are packaged into all types of
pourri, fabric sachets and shoe fresheners. Production at
lerton Street focuses on creating envelope sachets. As Good
ents continues to grow it is creating more opportunities for
ividuals at all three MVLE locations.
s new division of MVLE is striving to provide meaningful
d enjoyable work for individuals without regard to their level
disability. Judging by the zeal displayed by our employees
are achieving that goal. When the Chantilly Good Scents TM
w was asked about their work they readily volunteered this
s “the best job ever.” They are building friendships within a
m of co-workers while they create valuable products. One
d this was their “dream job” while another said they never
nted a different job. Their passion and pride shows in both
ir high-quality work and their goals. The advice they had for
ers wanting to work was “enjoy the paycheck.” They were
n asked “So what’s the goal after you have landed the best
ever?” “Make even more money!” they enthusiastically
ponded.
