Post-warJapanwasatimeforreconstructionbut itwasalsoatimefornewinfluencessuchasJazzandAmerican-stylemusiceducation.Thiscreatedanewgenerationofmusicianswhoneededaffordablemusical instrumentswhich,unfortunately,were inscarcesupply.Recognizingthisneed,KatsumiYanagisawastartedPearlinasmallfactorywithlessthan300sq.ft.and2employeesinSumida,TokyoonApril2,1946. By 1953, Pearl was producing marching drums and concert drums toreinforceitscommitmenttomusiceducation.Afterdecadesofinnovationindesign,Pearlmade its stamp in thehighest level ofmarchingpercussion in 1983,whentheGarfieldCadetsDrum&BugleCorps,playingPearlDrums,wontheir1stofa3peatasDrumCorpsInternationalWorldChampions,undertheleadershipofThomHannum.In1987,theyscoredDCI’sonly“Perfect”percussionscoreplayingPearlDrums.From1987-1991everyDCI“HighPercussion”winnerplayedPearlDrums.The90’salsosawthe introductionof the legendaryFFXFree-FloatingMarchingSnareDrumthatallowedtheshellstobecompletely“freefloating”thusproducingarichertonethatprojectedfartherthandrumsusinganon-freefloatingdesign.The1990’salsosawthecreationoftheunmistakablesoundofthePearlChampionshipmarchingtomsandthePhilharmonicconcertsnaredrums,bassdrumsandtomswhich have become the choice of universities, symphony orchestras, recordingstudiosandprofessionalstheworldover.
