WELCOME TOKANSAS WESLEYAN UNIVERSITYWelcome to Kansas Wesleyan University. For 125 years, Kansas Wesleyan has provided its students with a faith-based, values-centered education in the arts, sciences, and professional studies areas characterized by excellence within a caring community.

Affi liated with the United Methodist Church, we off er over 30 undergraduate programs at the associate and baccalaureate levels, several special programs for adults who wish to fi nish their education, and the MBA degree. We are located in Salina, the crossroads of Kansas, so our students are in an ideal location for internships, student teaching placements, volunteer activities, and off -campus jobs. There is also easy access to shopping, restaurants, theatres, parks, museums, and cultural arts events.

The intercollegiate athletics program is an important part of the life of many Kansas Wesleyan students. We are proud members of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Champions of Character program. Our teams compete through the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC), and that competition demands both focus and commitment. The lessons our students learn through their participation in our athletic programs help develop those skills that will be needed throughout life: goal setting, commitment to excellence, teamwork, and communication. We have made a strong commitment to having the programs, services, and facilities needed to support a strong athletic program. In addition to our athletic program, our students can choose from a full range of student activities that appeal to a wide variety of interests. Just a few examples of student activities include vocal and instrumental music groups, theatre, studio arts, debate and forensics, yearbook, newspaper, student government, ministry and fellowship groups, intramurals, and numerous other special interest organizations. I am impressed by the number of our athletes who become actively involved in many of these other opportunities on campus.

At Kansas Wesleyan University, you can make a diff erence, and you can achieve things far beyond what you may have imagined possible. I invite you to take the time to walk around our beautiful campus and sense the excitement of Kansas Wesleyan University.

WELCOME TO TODAY’S GAME FROM ATHLETIC DIRECTOR MATTHEW WILLIAMSWelcome to Kansas Wesleyan University, the home of the Coyotes. As I embark on my sixth campaign as Athletic Director, KWU continues its commitment to excellence, providing outstanding opportunities for student-athletes to excel not only in athletics, but also in the classroom. KWU’s commitment to give students the tools they need to succeed is evident all over campus.

Our athletic programs continue to be a dominant force in the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference and continue to make a strong showing and positive representation of Kansas Wesleyan at the national level as our Women’s Cross Country, Men’s Soccer, Women’s Basketball and Baseball teams

represented KWU and the KCAC at NAIA Championship events in 2009-10.

Our athletic programs also are committed to being the best of the best. Over the last fi ve years, the Coyotes have won 28 KCAC and NAIA Regional Championships and has had the best overall and in-conference records in the conference

for three of the last four years in the eight major team sports sponsored by the KCAC (football, volleyball, women’s soccer, men’s soccer, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, baseball and softball). Over the last fi ve years KWU boasts the best in-conference record in the eight major sports in the KCAC,

tallying a 389-211-3 record in conference play, winning 65 percent of the time.

We also have launched a new athletics website: www.kwucoyotes.com giving us one of the strongest presences on the web in our conference, and I applaud the eff orts of Sports Information Director David Toelle for getting our website up and running in just a short amount of time.

This year we are emphasizing our “Commitment to Excellence” through the four cornerstones of success as outlined by President Lamkin – Responsibility, Respect, Fairness and Integrity; in addition to continuing our emphasis on the “Three E’s,” where student-athletes are: EXPECTED to graduate from Kansas Wesleyan University, EXPECTED to strive just as hard in the classroom as on the athletic fi eld, and EXPECTED to have a winning season.

Our coaches have continued to recruit high quality student-athletes that excel not only on the athletic fi eld, but in the classroom as well. Last year, our Women’s Basketball and Volleyball teams were named as NAIA Scholar Teams, and the Volleyball team earned the Academic Team Award from the American Volleyball Coaches’ Association, one of only 34 teams at the NAIA level to receive the award.

The faculty, staff , and administration of Kansas Wesleyan University have all taken pride in what we have accomplished and will continue to take pride in the success we will have this year both on and off the athletic playing fi eld.

I hope you enjoy today’s contest and are impressed with our student athletes’ accomplishments both on and off the athletic fi eld.

As you look around here today and through this athletic program, I encourage you to please support all our local sponsors and thank them for supporting these young student athletes. These sponsors play a very important role in maintaining the success of the athletic programs here at Kansas Wesleyan University.

THE NEW HOME OF KWU ATHLETICS ON THE WEB -- WWW.KWUCOYOTES.COM

THIS IS COYOTE ATHLETICSKansas Wesleyan University prides itself on being the best of the best. Over the last fi ve years, the Coyotes have won 28 KCAC and NAIA Regional Championships, a mark unprecedented over that time span. In addition, KWU has had the best overall and in-conference records in the conference for three of the last four years in the eight major team sports sponsored by the KCAC (football, volleyball, women’s soccer, men’s soccer, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, baseball and softball).

Over the last fi ve years KWU boasts the best in-conference record in the eight major sports, tallying a 389-211-3 record in conference play, winning 65 percent of the time. The best season came in 2006-07 when KWU won 90 of the 119 conference contests it played. No other school has won more than 85 conference games in a single season over that same time period.

It doesn’t stop there. The University has made strides in the last few years to upgrade its athletic facilities to some of the best at the small college level in the state of Kansas and in the entire region. In 2008, KWU opened the Student Activities Center that features Mabee Arena. Mabee is like no other facility in the area at this level, seating approximately 1500 and featuring some high tech, high quality features you will not fi nd anywhere else. Complimenting the Arena is the Hauptli Student Center and the Everett Morgan Strength Training Center, along with the Brown Mezzanine, new Athletic Training facilities and coaches offi ces. KWU also recently announced plans to renovate the Martin Stadium area to revitalize that area of campus.

In the last four years, Wesleyan has had 359 All-KCAC selections, including 177 as First Team nods. 50 players have received individual conference honors and 17 times a KWU coach has been selected as a KCAC Coach of the Year in their respective sport. Wesleyan boasted 36 All-NAIA Region IV players over the last three years of regional play, and four times coaches were named Regional Coach of the Year. KWU has had 39 NAIA All-Americans in the last four seasons, including 12 in 2008-09. Two Wesleyan coaches have received honors at the national level, including Colby Hensley (AFCA-NAIA Assistant Coach of the Year, 2006) and Mike Dibbini (2007 NSCAA Great Plains Region Women’s Soccer Coach of the Year).

These activities allow student-athletes become actively involved on campus outside of athletics.

MUIR GYMNASIUM was the former home of Kansas Wesleyan Basketball and Volleyball. Opened in 1981, Muir was the last new facility to be constructed on the KWU Campus prior to the construction of the new Student Activities Center. Muir Gym features a capacity of nearly 800 and provided a high quality small college atmosphere for all athletic contests. Muir Gym is still being used as a practice gym and host to community events.

GENE BISSELL FIELD AT MARTIN STADIUM will be the site of all JV Football games in 2010. Sacred Heart High School also plays its football games at Martin Stadium. The stadium complex, built in the early 1940s as a Public Works project, is the oldest athletic facility in use by the Coyotes today. Over the years, Martin Stadium has been the site of many classic Kansas Wesleyan football games, and it hosted the 2000 American Family Insurance Charity Bowl between the Coyotes and arch-rival Bethany College. The fi eld at Martin Stadium is named Bissell Field in honor of Gene Bissell. “Mr. Wesleyan” coached Coyote football for 26 years and served the athletic department in various capacities, including athletic director until his retirement in the early 1980s. Bissell is KWU’s all-time wins leader in football with 116 career victories.

The Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference, commonly called “The Kansas Conference,” is a prominent intercollegiate athletics conference comprised of ten outstanding independent or private institutions of higher education in the state.

The origins of the KCAC are traced to February 15, 1890, when the Kansas Intercollegiate Athletic Association became the result of the fi rst successful attempt at organization among Kansas colleges, “to promote and regulate amateur intercollegiate athletics.” At that time the association or conference included not only private universities and colleges but also Kansas Agriculture College (now KSU), Kansas University, and Washburn University. Football seems to have been the major sponsored sport, and Baker University won the championship for the fi rst three or four years.

In about 1902 this early association became allied with the Kansas College Athletic Conference, a group which was the fi rst to adopt a defi nite set of rules and regulations. It also promoted an annual track and fi eld meet which has continued yearly since, except for World War years. Basketball has been sponsored since 1904. Football was revived in 1907. Tennis began as early as 1912. Golf was added in 1923. By this time the name of the conference had been altered to the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference; it had grown to 17 college members and two allied members: Baker, Bethany, Bethel, College of Emporia, Fairmount (now WSU), Friends, Kansas Wesleyan, KSTC of Emporia (now ESU), KSTC of Hays (now FHSU), KSTC of Pittsburg (now PSU), McPherson, Ottawa, St.Benedict’s (now Benedictine), St.Mary’s, Sterling (formerly Cooper), Southwestern, and Washburn, and with St.John’s and Kansas City University (Kansas) as allied members. Kansas University and Kansas Aggies had dropped out earlier to join other conferences. In 1923 the College of Emporia, KSTC of Emporia, KSTC of Hays, KSTC of Pittsburg, Wichita (formerly Fairmount), Southwestern, and Washburn withdrew to form the Central Conference.

The present legal entity comes from a reorganization of the conference when the predecessor Kansas Intercollegiate Athletic Conference formally disbanded on December 1, 1928, and a new conference was formed which again was called the Kansas College Athletic Conference. The members were Baker, Bethany, Kansas Wesleyan, McPherson, Ottawa, and St.Mary’s colleges. At that time sportswriters quickly gave the KCAC league a nickname: the “Little Six,” in contrast to the Big Six (which became Big Eight, now Big 12) which also was organized in 1928. St.Mary’s College was discontinued in 1931. The College of Emporia returned to the fold in 1933, and Bethel was readmitted in 1939. Friends, a former member of the KIAC, was admitted in 1953. Sterling and Southwestern were approved for membership in 1958. In 1968 Tabor College and St. Mary of the Plains College were admitted to make twelve members in the conference, and the conference was organized into Southern and Northern divisions until 1970 — when Baker, College of Emporia, and Ottawa withdrew to join two separate Missouri-based conferences. In the mid-1970s the formal name was changed again to Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference. In 1975 women’s intercollegiate athletics were incorporated into programs of the KCAC. Ottawa was readmitted in 1981, bringing the conference membership to 10. In 1992 St.Mary of the Plains College in Dodge City left the conference and eventually closed. In 1999, Saint Mary College (now University of Saint Mary) joined to return the KCAC membership to ten institutions.

The “Kansas Conference” (KCAC) continues to be an all-Kansas conference. The KCAC is an affi liated conference of the National Association of intercollegiate Athletics with headquarters in Kansas City, Mo.. Today the KCAC sponsors conference intercollegiate athletics in football, volleyball, men’s cross country, women’s cross country, men’s soccer, women’s soccer, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, men’s indoor track and fi eld, women’s indoor track and fi eld, men’s outdoor track and fi eld, women’s outdoor track and fi eld, baseball, softball, golf, women’s tennis, men’s tennis.

The KCAC is a widely respected conference which governs intercollegiate athletics in cooperation with the NAIA.

THE NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETICS (NAIA)The purpose of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) is to promote the education and development of students through intercollegiate athletic participation. Member institutions, although varied and diverse, share a common commitment to high standards and to the principle that participation in athletics serves as an integral part of the total educational process.

The NAIA embraces the concept of the student and recognizes the importance of the individuality of each member institution, the value of the conferences and Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) structure, and the benefi ts of membership in a national association.

The NAIA supports gender equity. Gender equity is an atmosphere and reality where fair distribution of overall athletic opportunity and resources, proportionate to enrollment, are available to women and men, and where no student-athlete, coach or athletics administrator is discriminated against in any way in the athletics program. That is to say, an athletics program is gender-equitable when the men’s sports program would be pleased to accept as its own the overall participation opportunities and resources currently allocated to the women’s sports program and vice versa.

The NAIA has 50,000 student-athletes participating at nearly 300 member colleges and universities throughout the United States and Canada. Divided into 25 conferences and the Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.), the NAIA off ers 23 championships in 13 sports.

Since 1937, the NAIA has continued a long tradition of pushing the envelope and making a positive diff erence in the lives of students, coaches and parents. The Champions of Character program is the latest cutting-edge addition to the NAIA’s proud history of innovation.

Through Champions of Character, the NAIA seeks to create an environment in which every student-athlete, coach, offi cial and spectator are committed to the true spirit of competition through the fi ve core values: respect, integrity, responsibility, servant leadership and sportsmanship.

FOOTBALL

“It was very helpful for us to be able to get the system installed during the spring,” Dallas said. “Now we can head into the fall refi ning it, instead of installing at that point. I was very pleased with our eff orts in spring ball, and now we are ready to get the little things down pat for the upcoming year.”

Despite the new look off ense, the Coyotes will try to balance out the run/pass game, something that Wesleyan has been able to do the last couple years.

“We will defi nitely be balanced in our off ensive attack. We will run the ball as well as throw it a little bit,” Dallas said.

One of the biggest things of benefi t to the Coyotes this season will be a simplifi ed off ensive attack as well as a renewed emphasis on an off ensive philosophical base, something that had gotten away from the team last season.

“We tried to simplify things a little bit and not make things as complicated as they were, and we have redefi ned our off ensive philosophy, which is the big key.”

The Kansas Wesleyan defense will return eight players with starting experience during the 2009 season.

The defensive line is the big question mark heading into camp, losing three starters from last season including Pat Shelton, who led the NAIA in sacks. Billy Butler (Sr., 6-1, 240, Paola, Kan./Highland CC (Kan.)) is the lone returning starter on the defensive line.

The Coyotes did well at fi lling the gaps up front and Dallas is confi dent the front four will step up and pay immediate dividends for the 2010 season.

“Our defensive line is going to have to come through for us this year,” Dallas said. “We have great depth there and great players there, and that’s going to be the key for us on the line.”

Wesleyan returns seven in the back seven (linebackers and defensive backs) with starting experience; the only loss being Richie Raught to graduation. Several other players who made signifi cant contributions also return in the defensive backfi eld.

“We are very solid in the defensive backfi eld, outside of the loss of Richie,” Dallas said. “We have a lot of guys that stepped up for us last year and fi lled in at key points.”

The linebacker group welcomes back the return of a player that missed the entire 2009 season with injury in Vicente “Niko” Arellano (Sr., 5-10, 220, Pittsburg, Calif./ Los Medanos College (Calif.)). The return of Arellano will

Last year’s disappointing season has the returning players hungry and ready to have a break out year in 2010.

“The guys were hungry in the off -season and in the spring. We have worked really hard in the off -season and spring, getting stronger and more powerful than we have ever been. We have a group of much more dedicated student-athletes and that is incredibly benefi cial to us.”

On the off ensive side, the Coyotes return 11 players that had starting experience in 2009 including all the skill positions and a majority of the off ensive line returns that were full-time starters in 2009. The look of the off ense will be much diff erent than in years past as new Off ensive Coordinator Chris Snyder will take the Coyotes to the air, implementing a spread off ense look that was very successful for Snyder at Mendocino College.

Dallas says that the off ense will be fun to watch this year.

“We have a chance to be very explosive off ensively this year,” he said. “We have a lot of guys back from last year and that’s helpful, and our new system is a welcome change for us.”

Snyder joined the Coyote staff in December of 2009 and was able to work during the spring practice sessions to install components of the new off ensive sets, which was a defi nite positive for the Coyotes.

2010 will be a season anew for the Kansas Wesleyan Coyote Football team. Changes to the coaching staff , including a new off ensive and defensive coordinator and a whole new look to the off ense are among the many new things for the Coyotes this season.

After a second straight 5-5 season in 2009, the Coyotes are looking to rebound and make a run at the KCAC Championship, hoping to hoist the trophy for the fi rst time since the 2002 season.

One of the key things that KWU Coach Dave Dallas points to is the team’s depth at all positions heading into 2010. Approximately 125 players reported to camp on August 16, one of the largest groups to start practice under Dallas’ leadership.

“We have some great upper classmen,” he said. “But our freshman class across the board is very talented and we have a lot of them, which is crucial to the future of our program as well. We have large upper class groups (29 seniors and 29 juniors), which means your freshman class has to be pretty good as well.”

Dallas says the large numbers in the upper class groups is good heading into the season.

“I think we have good leadership in our upperclassmen,” he said. “That’s something that is crucial for us especially coming off a disappointing season last year where we didn’t live up to our own standards.”

also compliment a strong group of returning players that include Jacob Brackens (Jr., 6-1, 185, Mesquite, Texas/North Mesquite HS), Kane Kaualoku (Jr., 5-11, 200, Richardson, Texas/Pearce HS) and Adrian Thomas (Jr., 5-10, 200, Diamond Bar, Calif./Diamond Bar HS). Thomas had a break out sophomore season in 2009, leading the Coyotes with 86 tackles, nearly twice as many as any other player.

“We’ve got some great depth at the linebacker position,” Dallas said. “We’ve got two all-conference players back along with some players with great talent. We are very solid at linebacker this year.”

Don’t expect massive changes on the defensive side with new coordinator Bob Frey. Dallas said Frey’s defensive philosophy is very similar to what KWU has done in the past, but as always, new blood brings new twists and turns to everything.

“Our philosophical base on defense is very similar to what we’ve done in the past, but as always when you bring in a new coordinator, you will bring some new tweaks to things,” he said. “Coach Frey’s experience in the game, at all coaching levels and on both sides of the ball, he brings a lot to the table for us.”

One of the biggest question marks for the Coyotes in 2010 could be the special teams, especially in the kicking game. The loss of Scotty McKeon to graduation left a big open hole for the Coyotes kicking game, but Dallas feels a couple of key additions and a couple returning players will be able to step up and fi ll the gap

left by McKeon’s departure.

KWU will look to Jesus “Chewy” Ochoa (Jr., 5-11, 170, Paramount, Calif./Cerritos College (Calif.)) as one of potential candidates as kicker for the Coyotes. Ochoa played soccer last season for the Wesleyan and will start the season doing both sports for KWU. Ochoa kicked for the Coyotes in the spring practice sessions and made a good impression for the coaching staff .

“Chewy kicked in junior college (at Cerritos) and showed some real promise for us in the spring,” Dallas said. “But when you lose a consistent leg like Scotty (McKeon), it’s something that will be a challenge to replace.”

Also looking to compete for the kicker spot will be returners Nick Ciliberti (So., 6-2, 180, Enid, Okla./Enid HS) and Scott Mulford (Jr., 6-1, 190, Topeka, Kan./Dodge City CC (Kan.)).

The Coyotes will open the season on September 11 in Hillsboro against Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference opponent Tabor College.

The 2010 schedule is in the same order as the 2009 schedule, but the sites are reversed as the KCAC is in year six of its Football Master Schedule that was put together by conference offi cials prior to the 2005 season.

Wesleyan’s home opener is September 18 at 6 p.m., against the University of Saint Mary at Salina Stadium. KWU has never lost to the Spires (9-0 all-time), despite close contests each of the last three years, including a 10-7 win last season on a 42-yard fi eld goal by Scotty McKeon as time expired.

The Coyotes then entertain Bethel College at 7 p.m. on September 25 at Salina Stadium. Wesleyan is then on the road at rival Bethany College in a 7 p.m. contest in Lindsborg.

Haskell Indian Nations University will come to Salina on October 9 for a 3:00 kickoff in Wesleyan’s only non-conference tilt of the season. Wesleyan defeated the Indians 14-12 last season in Lawrence.

One week later, October 16, the Coyotes then head to McPherson to take on the McPherson Bulldogs at 1:30 p.m., at McPherson Stadium.

The Coyotes are at home for their next two contests, hosting Sterling on October 23 for Homecoming 2010 at 1:30 at Salina Stadium, and then Ottawa University the following week at 2 p.m.

Wesleyan wraps up the season with two road contests at Friends on November 6 at 1:30 p.m., and then closes out the 2010 regular season in Winfi eld at Southwestern College.

The NAIA Football Championship Series begins on November 20 with First Round games at campus sites culminating with the NAIA National Championship Game on December 18 in Rome, Ga., at Barron Stadium hosted by Shorter College and Rome-Floyd County.

FOOTBALL

Dave Dallas begins his 14th year at the helm of Kansas Wesleyan University Football, making him the longest continuously tenured football coach in the Kansas Conference. Since coming to Wesleyan to start the 1997 season, Dallas has racked up a 72-58 record with the Coyotes, good enough for third all-time in total coaching wins at KWU.

Dallas’ overall coaching record is 110-97-1 in 21 years, 13 at KWU and eight at KCAC rival Ottawa University, where he was 38-39-1. Since coming to KWU, Dallas has captured two KCAC Championships in 2001 and 2002, and guided the Coyotes to their only two NAIA Post Season Championship berths in those same years. Dallas was named the 2001 KCAC Coach of the Year.

During his tenure at Wesleyan, Dallas has coached six NAIA All-Americans, and over 200 All-KCAC players, including six KCAC Players of the Year. One of Dallas’ team goals is for the players to complete their degrees, and Dallas has coached over 30 NAIA Scholar Athletes since 1997 at KWU.

Dallas played his collegiate football at Missouri Western, and began his coaching career there as a graduate assistant for two seasons in 1983 and 1984. After fi nishing his degree at MWSU in 1984, Dallas spent one season at Truman State University (then Northeast Missouri State) in 1985, as the Bulldogs captured the MIAA title that season with an 8-3 overall record, and 5-0 in the MIAA.

After taking a year off from the college ranks to coach at Rolla High School in Rolla, Mo., Dallas became defensive coordinator and recruiting coordinator at Graceland University in Lamoni, Iowa, for two seasons, before taking the head coaching job at Ottawa in 1989.

Dallas took over the reigns of the Ottawa University program, and spent eight years at the leadership of the Braves, as they went 42-35-1 during his tenure.

In 1997, Dallas took over a struggling Kansas Wesleyan program that had gone 4-26 the previous three years before his arrival. In just four years, in 2001, Wesleyan captured its fi rst KCAC title since 1982, and made the school’s fi rst ever NAIA Post-Season appearance.

Dallas is active in the American Football Coaches Association, currently serving as president of the NAIA-AFCA, as well as serving as a rater for the NAIA Football Top-25 Polls.

Dallas and his wife Kelly live in Salina and they have four children Drew, Casey, Trey, and Molly.

KKANSAS ANSAS WWESLEYAN ESLEYAN CCOYOTESOYOTES VOLLEYBALL2010 VOLLEYBALL SEASON OUTLOOK“I am 100% confi dent that we are going to be better than last year,” said Kansas Wesleyan coach Fred Aubuchon in preparation for the upcoming season which begins September 3 in Chicago.

Of course, being better is not too diffi cult considering the 2009 team, Aubuchon’s fi rst at KWU, went 1-34 overall, with the only win coming via forfeit.

Better not only record wise, but talent wise is something that Aubuchon and the Coyotes are looking forward to in 2010.

“I think with the players we have added and the work we did in the off season, we are stronger, deeper and with the changes in the KCAC rules, I think we now have enough time to prepare ourselves to start the season.”

The KCAC recently passed its new Sport Regulation Initiative over the summer, allowing teams to begin practice for fall sports earlier than ever before, which is benefi tting all fall sports programs.

Aubuchon’s number one concern is what the Coyotes will be able to do once they get into conference play in the KCAC.

“I would like to be a really great team, but my number one concern is what we can do in the KCAC,” he said. “In the future my concerns can be even higher, but this year it’s all about holding our own in the KCAC.”

The Coyotes have 21 players on the 2010 roster, up considerably from the last few years, and the coaching staff sees a strong mix of newcomers and returning players competing for playing time this year.

“I feel very comfortable with our depth at every position this year,” Aubuchon said. “I know that we are very strong with the number twos at every position, which makes me feel very confi dent heading into the year.”

SETTERSThe Coyotes were very inexperienced at the setter position last season, alternating starting time between two freshmen last year. Aubuchon turned to his recruiting class to bring in some much needed collegiate experience at that position which will pay immediate dividends to the team this year.

“Our inexperience at the setter position was one of my main concerns in the off season,” Aubuchon said.

Newcomers Juli Miles (5-6, Jr., Anaheim, Calif. / Fullerton College (Calif.)) and Jennifer Long (5-9, Jr., Ulysses, Kan. / Lamar CC (Colo.)) immediately

step into the mix.

“Both Juli and Jennifer come in with junior college experience and defensive experience and will be diff erence makers for us this year,” he said.

BACK ROWAubuchon’s number one concern in the off season was the play in the back row. He felt the passing element was just not there last year and that hurt the Coyotes.

Joining returners Tiff any Goetz (5-6, Jr., Hoxie, Kan. / Hoxie HS) and Jordyn Rahlf (5-9, Jr., Kasson, Minn. / Kasson-Mantorville HS) are newcomers Pauline Yang (5-4, So., Kansas City, Kan. / Coff eyville CC (Kan.)) and her sister Marlene (5-0, Fr., Kansas City, Kan. / Turner HS), Kelsey Boyles (6-0, Jr., Salina, Kan. / Highland CC (Kan.)) and Allie Myers (5-5, Fr., Salina, Kan. / Salina Central HS). Aubuchon feels that combining the defensive experience at setter with the improved back row play should provide off ensive and defensive stability.

“Tiff any and Jordyn have improved vastly over last season and with the newcomers, our back row is very strong this year,” he said. “It may be our strong point for the season.”

FRONT ROW (HITTERS)Heading into the preseason, Aubuchon felt that the middle hitter position was going to be the strong point in the front row, but as practice has progressed, the outsides have really made strides on both the left and right sides.

Two newcomers have been key to rebuilding the middle hitter position. Those players include Boyles, who missed all of last season with a knee injury and Jamisha Johnson (5-10, Jr., Dodge City, Kan. / Dodge City CC (Kan.)).

“Both are juniors with collegiate experience behind them, which made me feel really good about our middles, but our outsides have progressed greatly during practice so far,” he said.”

On the outside, Aubuchon has seen great improvement in a couple of the returning players in Rahlf and Faith Ramsey (5-10, So., Wellington, Colo. / Highland HS), and freshman Lauren Chamness (5-11, Fr., Littleton, Colo. / Columbine HS) will give the Coyotes a big boost on the outside.

“Jordyn has vastly improved at the outside position, showing more consistency so far in camp, and the addition of Lauren has given us a big boost on the outside,” he said. “The biggest surprise so far in camp has been the play of Faith Ramsey. She came into camp well prepared and has improved almost every facet of her game and will be competing for a spot on the right side for us.”

THE SCHEDULEThe Coyotes will open the season September 3 at the St. Xavier / Illinois Tech Tournament in Chicago against some top competition.

“It’s going to be a great test to show us what we truly need to work on,” Aubuchon said. “The whole idea of heading to Chicago to play great competition is to get us ready for Bethany and the rest of the conference.”

Wesleyan opens the KCAC portion of the schedule on September 8 against the Bethany Swedes in Lindsborg.

“The conference will be very tough again this year, and we have a lot to prove after last year in the KCAC,” Aubuchon said. “I have the highest respect for teams like Tabor and Friends that have been consistently at the top of the conference and it’s my goal to reach their level this year.”

HEAD COACH FRED AUBUCHON

Fred Aubuchon has been the Head Coach of Kansas Wesleyan Volleyball since 2009.

Aubuchon took over the Coyote Volleyball program after spending fi ve-plus seasons at Hastings College in Hastings, Nebraska. While at Hastings, Aubuchon amassed an impressive 173-46 record (.789 win pct.). Under his direction, Hastings never fi nished worse than sixth in the Great Plains Athletic Conference standings. In 2003, Aubuchon’s fi rst season, the Broncos were the No.6 seed. In 2006, Aubuchon’s Hastings squad won the GPAC Regular Season Championship, and advanced to the NAIA National Championships, advancing past Pool Play into the National Championship First Round.

Before Hastings, Aubuchon spent two years at Peru State College (Neb.), where he amassed a 43-26 record. While at Peru State, he began the Bobcats Men’s Volleyball Program.

In eight-plus seasons at the NAIA level , Aubuchon has a 217-104 overall record (.676 win pct.); however, more important than wins, his teams also excelled in the classroom. Aubuchon’s teams have achieved unprecedented academic success by leading the NAIA in four out of seven years with having the highest GPA in the nation, including two years when teams led all levels of NCAA Women’s Volleyball as well. He has had an astonishing 40 NAIA Scholar-Athletes in just seven years. His 2009 KWU team was named as a NAIA Scholar-Team and received the Team Academic Award from the American Volleyball Coaches’ Association; one of only 34 teams in the NAIA to receive the award.

Before Peru State, Aubuchon spent fi ve years at Owens Community College (Ohio), where he compiled a 152-76 record. He twice won the OCCAC (Ohio Community College Athletic Conference) Championship, and made fi ve straight appearances in the NJCAA Division III Women’s Volleyball Championships. He set a school record of 46 wins in 2000.

Aubuchon received a Bachelor of Applied Arts degree in Community Recreation from Central Michigan University in 1994, and a Master of Education degree from the University of Toledo in 1996.

KKANSAS ANSAS WWESLEYAN ESLEYAN CCOYOTESOYOTES WOMEN’S SOCCER

Kansas Wesleyan coach Mike Dibbini heads into the 2010 season with a high level of confi dence that the Coyotes can regain control of the KCAC Women’s Soccer world after a down season in 2009, in which Wesleyan fi nished second in the conference and failed to win the KCAC Tournament for the fi rst time under Dibbini’s direction.

“I was a little disappointed with our off ensive attack last year in terms of not stepping up to the plate,” he said. “Yeah, we lost a lot of scoring from the previous year, but I guess I learned my lesson that I have to look for those players with a hunger to get better and help the team score goals and win, rather than settling with those that are complacent with where they are.”

Injuries in 2009 to key players Heather Muilenburg and Corina Villegas did not help the situation either, but it’s something that Dibbini and the Coyotes have rectifi ed for the 2010 campaign.

“This year we have found the pieces to get us back to the top,” Dibbini said. “Off ensively we are more explosive and we have that sense and idea on how to attack and how to score. Our off ensive I.Q. is much better.”

Dibbini said there a lot of options this year that weren’t there last year on the off ensive end.

“We have options, lots of options this year, and that’s a diff erence maker for us,” he said. “Last year we had to pray, this year we have options.”

THE DEFENSEWesleyan’s back line returns a group that is young, but has a year of experience at this level, which will help greatly. Playing together for a season already has helped the back line gel and come back stronger than last season.

“Our strides have been huge in the back line,” Dibbini said.

Brittany Corcoran (So., 5-7, Long Beach, Calif. / St. Joseph HS) will anchor the back, along with returners Leanne Brown (So., 5-6, Palmdale, Calif. / Highland HS)and Rachelle Medina (Jr., 5-2, Ventura, Calif. / St. Bonaventure HS).

GOALKEEPERIn goal, the Coyotes return three players all who split time last season in KJ Stupey (Jr., 5-6, Everett, Wash. / Kamiak HS), Erin Gilmour (So., 5-5, Temecula, Calif. / Chaparral HS) and Karina Albarran (So., 5-4, Lancaster, Calif. / Paraclete HS), but Dibbini has brought in transfer player Amanda Radich (Jr., 5-8, Vacaville, Calif. / Solano College (Calif.)) that brings much needed experience into the mix leaving the door wide open at goal as to who will get the starting nod.

“The goalkeeper position is still very much up in the air heading into the season,” Dibbini said. “Karina has the most experience of our returners, and Amanda was very good at Solano CC last season, but it’s still up in the air right now.”

MIDFIELDERSDibbini feels the control of the game will be through the midfi eld this season.

“I think the brains and control of our team will go directly through the midfi elders this year,” he said.

Corina Villegas (Sr., 5-3, Perris, Calif. / Cerritos College (Calif.)), Elba Menjivar (Sr., 4-11, Panorama City, Calif. / Cerritos College (Calif.)) and Makenna Eide (Fr., 5-5, Corona, Calif. / Centennial HS) are three players Dibbini immediately points out as key players in the midfi eld for the Coyotes.

“All three are very good on the ball, and have a great soccer I.Q.,” he said. “And they all connect. As long as they can come together defensively, the off ense will come and that’s my main concern.”

As long as the midfi eld can avoid injury through the season, the Coyotes will be very good in the middle according to Dibbini.

FORWARDSDibbini did not have to look far to fi nd some of the scoring prowess that was missing last season. A familiar name to KWU soccer dots the roster again along with another transfer will pay immediate goal scoring dividends for the Coyotes this season.

Transferring from South Carolina State is Dani Benton (So., 5-5, Trabuco Canyon, Calif. / South Carolina State), the younger sister of former Wesleyan All-American Kat Benton, along with California Baptist transfer Diana Ravenda (Jr., 5-3, Laguna Niguel, Calif. / California Baptist University). Benton led the Bulldogs in goals scored last season with 19.

“Dani and Diana are going to do well together and bring a diff erent element,” Dibbini said. “Obviously we have other athletic players that can pass and can fi nd the back of the net or be able to cause enough havoc to get others open to create opportunities to score. Dani and Diana have a great understanding on how to fi nish and when to fi nish. They are fi lling that void left by Kat Benton and Eliana Parada after the 2008 season.”

Ravenda is a great ball handler and knows when to shoot or when to pass according to Dibbini, while Benton is a great player with her back to the ball, with the ability to turn and score or dish the ball off to a teammate.

Hannah Kern (Jr., 5-8, Wichita, Kan. / Maize HS) and Ameenah Issa (So., 5-4, Arcadia, Calif. / Alverno HS)

are a pair of players that fi t that role nicely.

“Hannah and Ameenah will be able to get our off ense going and free up Dani and Diana to fi nish,” Dibbini said.

All that off ensive fi repower for this season will be even more complimented when Corina Villegas comes up from the midfi eld into a striker position. Dibbini looks for her to have a breakout season in 2010 after missing a majority of the 2009 season with an injury, but still earning KCAC Co-Newcomer of the Year honors.

“I think that Corina will have a break out year for us,” Dibbini said. “She can come up from the midfi eld and do a lot of things for us. She will control the off ense for us. I look for her to have a good year.”

THE SCHEDULEDibbini feels the non-conference portion of the schedule will be a big test with four if the fi rst six opponents of the season with national tournament experience. The Coyotes open with Benedictine at home on September 1 and then make a trip to Sioux City to take on Morningside (Iowa) on September 4, always a tough place to play.

“Our California trip to take on Azusa Pacifi c and California Baptist will be our biggest early test,” he said. “Both are national tournament teams and those matches will give us a great gauge of where we need to be to make a return trip to the National Tournament.”

Dibbini feels that the target is back on the back of the Coyotes heading into the 2010 conference season, as was duly noted by the coaches of the conference, giving KWU the unanimous fi rst place selection in the preseason poll.

“I think we will be the team to beat in conference,” he said. “We will see strong competition from both Ottawa and McPherson as in the past.”

Ottawa returns nearly its entire lineup and McPherson always presents a challenge for the Coyotes.

Mike Dibbini has been coaching at Kansas Wesleyan since the 2005 season. He has compiled a combined 150-46-16 men’s and women’s overall record in fi ve seasons.

The women’s team has compiled an overall record of 80-20-8 under Dibbini and been nearly untouchable in conference play the last fi ve seasons. KWU won three straight regular season championships in 2006, 2007 and 2008 going undefeated during that time span, and won four straight conference tournament championships in 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008. Under Dibbini’s leadership, the Coyotes are 42-2-1 in regular season KCAC play, the best record of any KCAC team during that same span. The women also qualifi ed for the regional tournament each of the last three years of its existence and were consistently ranked in the top fi ve in the region. In 2007, the Coyotes became the fi rst KCAC team in conference history to advance to the NAIA National Tournament, and second straight appearance in 2008. Dibbini was named the KCAC Coach of the Year in 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008. He was also named as the Region 4 Coach of the Year and was named the Great Plains Region Women’s Soccer Coach of the Year by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America in 2007.

Prior to coaching at KWU, Dibbini was the Boys’ and Girls’ Soccer Coach at Salina Central High School from 1999-2006. In 2006, he was named the AVCTL Division I Coach of the Year. In 1999, he received the Kansas State Youth Soccer Boys Coach of the Year award.

In fi ve years, the men’s team has compiled an overall record of 70-26-8 and has fi nished at or near the top of the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference each season. The Coyotes won regular season KCAC championships in 2005, 2007 and 2008; conference tournament championships in 2005, 2006 and 2009; and make the program’s fi rst ever appearance in the NAIA National Championships in 2009. The men qualifi ed for the NAIA Region IV Tournament twice, and were consistently ranked in the top fi ve in the region. In 2006, the men cracked the NAIA Top 25 for the fi rst time in program history. Dibbini has been named the KCAC Men’s Soccer Coach of the Year three times, in 2005, 2007 and 2008.

He holds an NSCAA Premier Coaching Diploma and USSF National Coaching License. He is also the Director of Coaching and Player Development for the Salina Soccer Club, and is currently on staff as the Head Boys' Coach for the Kansas Olympic Development Program (ODP).

Dibbini graduated in 1999 from Kansas Wesleyan University with a degree in Elementary Education, and continued on to earn a Master

of Business Administration in 2002.

As a player at KWU and in junior college at Bethany Lutheran (Minn.) College, Dibbini was a four-time (twice at KWU and

twice at BLC) All-Conference, All-Region, and All-American. In 1997, Dibbini was ranked number two in the NAIA for

goals scored and off ensive points. He was also named to the NAIA Academic All-Region team in 1997 and the National Small College Player of the Year 1997.

Originally from Palmdale, Calif., Dibbini was a First Team All-CIF selection twice, CIF Player of the Year, and Golden

KKANSAS ANSAS WWESLEYAN ESLEYAN CCOYOTESOYOTES MEN’S SOCCER

Kansas Wesleyan Men’s Soccer looks to return to the level they have sustained the last few seasons that culminated in a KCAC Tournament Championship in 2009 after back to back Regular Season Championships in 2007 and 2008.

The Coyotes will be a new look team, especially up front with the loss of key goal scorers Art Guizar and Jose Garay, but head coach Mike Dibbini has reloaded the team and feels the team will be right in the hunt for another conference title. The rest of the conference agreed, picking Wesleyan fi rst in the preseason poll.

With all the new, a lot of questions remained unanswered, but Dibbini is confi dent the Coyotes will be okay.

“It’s too hard to tell right now if we can ever match the power of what Jose Garay and Art Guizar brought,” he said. “They connected really well and they understood what it takes to put the ball away. But I think the diff erence will be our depth at all positions this year.”

The depth will be key in keeping the Coyotes from becoming too one-dimensional, something that plagued the Coyotes towards the end of the year last year.

“Last year teams fi gured out who to try to shut down as the year wore on,” he said. “I think that we will have the ability to be more spread out off ensively, which will in turn create opportunities for us. We might not be able to fi nish as well as we did last year, but we will be able to create more opportunities for us to score which will turn into goals for us.”

THE DEFENSEThe Coyotes are defi nitely deeper on the defensive side. Dibbini sees a possible seven-man rotation with six players that the Coyotes can rely on and two role players that will fi t into the mix without problem. Five of the eight are returning players.

“We are deeper than we have been in the last two or three years defensively,” Dibbini said. “There’s a lot of players that we can turn to and they all bring a diff erent defensive element to our game.”

Some of the players that Dibbini is looking to count on defensively include returners Derek Dodrill (Sr., 5-10, 140, Rio Ranch, N.M. / Rio Rancho HS), Scott Knox (Sr., 6-3, 185, Salina, Kan. / Salina Central HS), Edgar Espinoza (Sr., 6-0, 190, Los Angeles, Calif. / Compton College (Calif.)) and Jeremy Mireles (Jr., 5-9, 155, Hesperia, Calif. / Victor Valley College (Calif.)); along with newcomers Carlos Chavez (Jr., 6-0, 155, El Monte, Calif. / Mt San Antonio College (Calif.)), Cesar Torrico (Jr., 5-10, 165, Baldwin Park, Calif.

/ Mt San Antonio College (Calif.)) and Cacey Scott (Jr., 5-9, 160, Santa Clarita, Calif. / Mt San Antonio College (Calif.)).

THE MIDFIELDERSDavid Hernandez (Sr., 5-7, 150, Inglewood, Calif. / LA Harbor College (Calif.)) will anchor the Wesleyan midfi eld again this season after earning KCAC Newcomer of the Year and Honorable Mention NAIA All-American honors last year as a junior. The Coyotes have added a little more support in the middle with the addition of Hernandez’ junior college teammate Rodolfo Jauregui (Jr., 5-10, 170, Bellfl ower, Calif. / LA Harbor College (Calif.)).

“David and Rodolfo play together really well,” Dibbini said.

Larry Guizar (Jr., 5-10, 175, Santa Clarita, Calif. / College of the Canyons (Calif.)), the cousin of Art Guizar, will also be a complimenting player in the midfi eld for the Coyotes this season, who also has the ability to move up into a forward-type role.

“Larry brings a threat in terms of having a nice shot and a nice leg from the outside,” Dibbini said. “He understands the game really well and is very aggressive and will be really good in the middle for us.”

THE FORWARDSThe Coyote front line will be all new for 2010, with the exceptions of Trenton Corea (Sr., 5-9, 155, Mesa, Ariz. / Red Mountain HS) and Robbie Hector (Sr., 6-1, 150, Simi Valley, Calif. / Moorpark College (Calif.)), who both missed the 2009 campaign with injuries.

Also looking to make many marks on the scoresheet will be Alex Chavez (Jr., 6-3, 185, Los Angeles, Calif. / LA Harbor College (Calif.)), who Dibbini calls the ‘go-to guy’ this season. Chavez earned First Team All-American honors last year at LA Harbor.

“Alex will be our leading go-to guy this year,” he said. “He’s a big strong target player with a nice left foot.”

Several players will be able to compliment Chavez nicely, including Eduardo Barba (Jr., 5-11, 145, Norwalk, Calif. / East LA College (Calif.)), Jacob DeLeon (Jr., 5-8, 166, Apple Valley, Calif. / Victor Valley College (Calif.)), Daniel Chance (Fr., 5-9, 160, Lawrence, Kan. / Lawrence Free State HS) and local product Ryan Ingrassia (Fr., 5-10, 155, Salina, Kan. / Salina Central HS).

“All those guys will be able to work for and work off the skill of Alex. They all compliment his game and each other’s game well, “Dibbini said. “We will be strong up front again, we just have to come together feed off of what each other does and we will be fi ne.”

GOALKEEPERSThe battle in the net seems to have a clear early favorite in returning starter Diego Millan (Sr., 5-8, 165, Lynwood, Calif. / Cerritos College (Calif.)), but newcomers Roberto Sanchez (Jr., 5-11, 170, Los Angeles, Calif. / LA Harbor College (Calif.)) and Juan Morales (Jr., 5-8, 175, Santa Clarita, Calif. / College of the Canyons (Calif.)) look to battle for some key time between the pipes for the Coyotes as well.

Dibbini points out that Millan is the current number one, while Sanchez and Morales will battle for the number two spot and returning sophomore Nick Ciliberti (So., 6-3, 185, Enid, Okla. / Enid HS) will look to fi t into the goalkeeper mix as well.

“Diego is our number one right now, but he can’t take a day off or fall asleep, Roberto and Juan are breathing right down his neck,” he said. “Nick is still in the mix as well, but his lack of collegiate experience is what is holding him back right now.”

THE SCHEDULEAs on the women’s side the men’s schedule provides a formidable selection of opponents, especially in the non-conference portion of the slate.

“I would say our schedule is an above average schedule in terms of strength of our opponents,” Dibbini said.

Wesleyan opens the year with Morningside on September 4, a team that the Coyotes tied last season and then take on Concordia (Neb.) before heading out to California to play Azusa Pacifi c and California Baptist.

Also the Coyotes will take on Bellevue (Neb.) and William Jewell and Westminster (Utah).

“Bellevue and Azusa are consistent National Tournament teams,” Dibbini said. “Williams Jewell has been very good in the past along with a very strong Westminster team.”

McPherson and Friends along with the Coyotes should be the top teams in the Kansas Conference, but Dibbini also thinks that Ottawa and Sterling have a chance to make an impact in the conference standings.

2010 CROSS COUNTRY SCHEDULE AND SEASON OUTLOOK

Kansas Wesleyan Cross Country enters the 2010 season with the women seeking a second straight KCAC Championship, while the men are going through a rebuilding season after fi nishing second in the KCAC Championships last year.

On the women’s side, Kansas Wesleyan returns a couple of key runners in Cherise Price (Sr., Tucson, Ariz. / Pima CC (Ariz.)) and Crystal Stegman (Sr., Salina, Kan. / Butler CC (Kan.)) that will lead the Coyotes this season. In addition a strong group of newcomers will help the Coyotes maintain the high level of competition they achieved last year.

Stepping in for KWU to replace the losses of graduated seniors Kara Walker, Shanda Anderson and Stacey Lastra will be junior college transfers Cecilia Burley (Jr., Ponca City, Okla. / Cowley CC (Kan.)) and Vivian Reed (Jr., Vail, Ariz. / Pima CC (Ariz.)) and freshman Jillian Stratman (Fr., Bennington, Kan. / Bennington HS).

“We have brought in Cecilia, Vivian and Jillian to help us fi ll some of the gaps opened up by graduation,” KWU head coach Jeff Barker said.

Burley was one of the top runners in the NJCAA last season, fi nishing 21st at the NJCAA National Championships and Reed fi nished 22nd just one second behind Burley. Reed transferred in at the semester break last year, but was forced to redshirt due to injuries, but comes back healthy for the 2010 season.

Stratman was been a four-time Top 20 fi nisher at the KSHSAA Class 2A State Championships,

with her best showing coming in 2008 when she fi nished second individually. She has been a part of three Class 2A State Championship teams (2006, 2007, 2009) while at Bennington. She was also selected to the Third Annual Kansas Shrine Bowl All-Star Cross Country Race in July in Pittsburg.

“Cecilia and Vivian are going to be two big stars for us,” Barker said. “Add in our top returners and Jillian coming in as a freshman, we have a very strong top fi ve.”

Also returning for the Coyotes in Julina White (Sr., Hereford, Colo. / American River College (Calif.)), who struggled through injuries last season, but is back and healthy and according to Barker had a great summer.

“Julina is coming off a great track season after being hurt through a majority of cross country season,” he said. “She was part of the 4x800 nationals team and ran well in the steeplechase and we are looking for her to help us greatly this fall.”

Also running for the Coyotes this fall will be Tara Davis (Fr., Dallas, Texas / White HS), who was redshirted with the soccer team last season.

“Tara has had a great work ethic for us so far, and she will fi t in with our group well,” Barker said.

Barker also added that his team stacks up well with the rest of the NAIA on paper, something that was echoed by the Coyotes being ranked No.14 in the NAIA Preseason Top 25 poll released on August 25.

“Right now with the team we have on paper, we

would have fi nished ninth in the country in both 2007 and 2008 at the National Championships, and last year on a muddy course in Washington, we could have fi nished within the top 15,” he said. “Right now our goal is to be a Top 10 team by season’s end. As long as we stay injury free through the year, I think it’s very possible for us to achieve that goal.”

Barker feels that Friends on the women’s side will be KWU’s greatest challenge, and there will be many opportunities to see the Falcons as both teams will be at a lot of the same meets.

On the men’s side, it will be a rebuilding year in 2010. The Coyotes return just three runners from last year’s team, with several runners not returning for a variety of reasons.

Headlining the returners will be Nate Mesta (Jr., Tucson, Ariz. / Morgan State (Md.)).

“Nate’s goal is to fi nish Top 15 in the country or at worst an All-American this year,” Barker said. “He wants to improve on his strengths to get ready for the track season because he has really high goals on the track.”

Also returning for the Coyotes will be Jordan Evans (So., Green, Kan. / Clay Center Community HS) and Joel Wallace (Sr., Salina, Kan. / Pratt CC (Kan.)).

“We lost a lot of our top returners for a lot of reasons and that’s unfortunate,” Barker said. “And some of our top recruits did not want to come into a rebuilding situation, so it’s something we have to deal with.”

Wesleyan hosts the KCAC Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Championships on November 6 at Bill Burke / Indian Rock Parks in Salina. Barker feels the fact that KWU is hosting the championships will be benefi cial for the Coyotes.

“More so than the course being in Salina, but just the fact that we will be in Salina and have plenty of fans there cheering for us will be the greatest advantage we can have on November 6,” Barker said.

KKANSAS ANSAS WWESLEYAN ESLEYAN CCOYOTESOYOTES CROSS COUNTRYCROSS COUNTRY COACHING STAFFHEAD COACH JEFF BARKER

Jeff Barker has been cross country and track coach at Kansas Wesleyan University since 2007.

In his three years at Kansas Wesleyan, Barker has wokred hard to built the cross coutnry teams into contenders not only in the KCAC but at a national level as well. In 2007, his fi rst season, Barker qualifi ed two individuals to run at the NAIA National Championships and in 2008, fi ve individuals went to the big show, including Sarah Williams, who earned NAIA All-American honors by fi nishing 26th in the race. Williams also won the KCAC Championship Meet. In 2009, the women’s cross country

team won the KCAC Championship for the fi rst time since 2006 and the men fi nished second, nearly knocking off perennial favorite Southwestern.

Barker came to Kansas Wesleyan from Calumet College at St. Joseph (Ind.), where he was most recently the head distance track coach and assistant cross country coach. He also held a similar concurrent position at Andrean High School in Merrillville, Indiana.

Before being named head distance coach and assistant cross country coach at Calumet, Barker was named the program’s fi rst head cross country coach in June, 2005. By August of that year, he had recruited 10 student-athletes, including a national qualifi er for the NAIA Championships that season.

Barker earned degrees in Criminal Justice and Human Service and Social Work from Saint Joseph’s College in Rensselaer, Ind., after excelling at Bishop Noll Institute High School.

At Saint Joseph’s, he was named a team captain and recruiting leader in the 2002-2003 season.

At Bishop Noll Institute, he was named the 1998-99 Athlete of the Year, while earning several individual honors, including Honorable Mention All-State honors in 1998, and he was the LAC Conference Champion in 1998, setting a course record of 15:50 for the 5K race. He went on to earn LAC Champion honors in the 3200m and was the IHSAA Sectional Champion in the 3200m.

Barker is committed to building his programs based on the recent success in both cross country and track at KWU.

“One of my favorite quotes is ‘If what we did last year still looks good this year, then are we really doing what it takes to get better?’. We are going to work very hard to develop a program that cross country/track athletes want to be a part of daily. Once the program has purpose, the passion will grow, and the athletes will love being a part of something truly special.”

Barker is married to the former Alanna Moore, and the couple resides in Salina

NAIA CHAMPIONS OF CHARACTERThe National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Champions of Character program is designed to instill an understanding of character values in sport and provide practical tools for student-athletes, coaches and parents to use in modeling exemplary character traits.

Launched by the NAIA in 2000, the Champions of Character program addresses character issues more comprehensively than any other national program for youth. The program currently reaches hundreds of thousands of students on nearly 300 college and university campuses in North America and extends into their surrounding communities.

The NAIA Champions of Character program is an educational outreach initiative which emphasizes the tenets of character and integrity, not only for NAIA college students, but for younger students, coaches and parents in our communities.

Coaches, parents, administrators and community partners all have a role in developing students of character. The NAIA Champions of Character program brings them training, guidelines and behavior models to create positive environments that promote personal growth and fun sport activity.
