JCSU Department of Athletics Mission Statement

The primary mission of Johnson C. Smith University’s intercollegiate athletics program is to provide a natural extension of secondary school programs and offer skilled student-athletes the opportunity to continue their educational and athletic experiences beyond high school. The program will function at a level and in a manner that project a positive image for the University in the community. Johnson C. Smith upholds membership in the Division II National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Conference, and adherence to the governing philosophies and regulations of these bodies, which provide a framework for implementing JCSU mission statement.

JCSU Athletics Department Philosophy

Johnson C. Smith University places the highest priority on the quality academic and athletic experience as part of the overall education of student-athletes. We affirm academic excellence as the cornerstone to the mission of the institution; as well as the physical, mental, and social well-being of those admitted. In so doing, we seek to strengthen the integration of the athletic program objectives with academic development objectives. We seek to promote the personal and social development of our student-athletes, coaches and all others associated with the JCSU athletics programs.

JCSU recognizes the positive impact of athletic participation on the individuals, campus community and community at-large. Consistent with these we seek to encourage attitudes of integrity, fairness, honesty, civility, responsibility, respect for others, dedication to goals, equal access and zeal to present a national model program that culminates into strongly competitive performances in the classroom and on the athletic field.

The Johnson C. Smith University sports medicine staff and facilities provide student-athletes with the best of care in both the prevention and rehabilitation of injuries. When an athletic injury occurs, the goal is to provide the best medical care possible from the initial first-aid to follow-up to rehabilitation, and ultimately a return to participation. The athletic training facilities consist of two athletic training rooms on campus to meet the needs of all of JCSU’s student-athletes. The main training room is located in the Irwin Belk Complex on the south side of campus adjacent to the gymnasium parking lot. There is also a satellite training room located in Brayboy Gymnasium.

Tim Botic, who begins his second year as the head athletic trainer at JCSU, leads a staff that includes assistant athletic trainer Kathryn Hanes-Romano and a group of athletic training room student assistants. JCSU’s medical group consists of team primary care physician, Dr. David Price, and team orthopedic physician Dr. Michael Dockery.

For general medical coverage, JCSU student-athletes have full access at Eastland Family Clinic, which is one of the leading healthcare providers on the east coast and OrthoCarolina, the largest orthopedic group in southeastern United States.
