FACILITIES

General InformationCapacity: 500Year Constructed: 1979 Last Renovation Completed: 2002

Originally referred to as the Centenary Soccer Complex, the field was renamed in 2001 in honor of Lewis Mayo. Mayo, the father of former Gents player and coach Eric Mayo, lost his life heroically fighting a fire while serving the Houston, Texas, area as a member of the fire depart-ment. His family graciously donated the funds that allowed Centenary to erect a quality lighting system.

The first-ever night soccer game at Cen-tenary was played on August 31, 2001, against Georgia Southern University. A memorial to Lewis Mayo stands at the entryway to the field named in his honor.

Various other upgrades and additions have been made to Mayo Field over the past several years. New stands for seat-ing were installed in 2000 that now al-lows for a crowd of 500. A physical plant building was transformed in 2000 to house a new locker room and three of-fices for the soccer coaches and staff.

2002 brought on several upgrades to the field itself. The chain link fencing that surrounded the field was torn down and new black iron fencing was installed to enhance the overall look. The playing surface was improved with the addition of an underground drainage system that will allow the field to remain playable in adverse weather conditions. Most recent-ly, netting was hung behind both goals to limit the amount of balls that leave the playing area.

HEAD COACH

David Orr begins his third season as the head coach of the Centenary men’s soccer team. Orr is Centenary alum that both played for the Gents and served as an assistant coach with the program for four seasons from 1999-2002.

Orr coached the 2009 squad to a 3-14-1 overall record and a 1-5 mark in The Summit League. The Gents posted wins over IPFW, Central Baptist and Houston Baptist and dropped eight of its 17 matches by one goal.

In his first season as the Gents coach, Orr finished with an overall record of 5-8-1 and a Summit League record of 2-4-0. Sophomore McHugh scored three goals in the 2008 season and was later named second team All-Summit League and to the All-Summit League Newcomer team.

Orr comes to Centenary directly after serving as the Director of Coaching for Texas Longhorns Soccer Club, Inc., based out of Richardson, Texas, in the Dallas area. He spent five years overseeing the management of coaches and assessing 15 staff coaches. He also developed and implemented a college recruiting program and coordinated college seminars for The Dallas Cup, one of the world’s most prestigious youth soccer tournaments.

In 2004-05, Orr was the head coach at Mountain View College and he assisted with all aspects of recruiting, training, budgeting, and scheduling in the four years he spent working with former coach Jed Jones at Centenary. Under Orr and Jones’ guidance, the Gents went from a 4-12 record in 2000 to a 14-5 mark in 2002.

Orr also has coaching experience in the Shreveport area, having formerly been the head coach at Captain Shreve High School from 1995 to 1998. He coached the Gators to two playoff appearances in three years. He was also the goalkeepers coach for the Dallas Texans and played professionally for the Shreveport-Bossier Lions of the USISL.

Orr donned the Gents soccer uniform during his four-year collegiate career, which culminated with his graduation in 1996. As a student-athlete, Orr helped lead Centenary to 27 wins in four years, and each year the Gents win total increased.

Orr is married to the former Catherine Hudson and the couple resides in Shreveport.

McClain was a 2009 Magna Cum Laude graduate of Centenary with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communication with an emphasis on Professional Writing.

She spent her last two years working as a Sports Information student assis-tant, serving as the contact for men’s basketball and men’s and women’s golf her senior year. As an undergraduate, McClain assisted with all game-day media relations’ efforts, published articles on the college’s athletic website, as well as the producing the 2009 Ladies softball media guide.

Outside the classroom and SID office, McClain excelled on the softball field as a four-year member of the Ladies softball team. In her sophomore season, she earned All-Mid Con and All-LSWA Second Team utility player honors as well as being named an All-Mid Con and LSWA Player of the Week. Her ac-colades went beyond the field, as she was recognized as an NFCA Academic All-America Scholar Athlete and named to the Academic All-Conference team all four years.

She garnered the Outstanding Athletic Achievement award her senior year, served as a student justice on the Centenary College Honor Court, was a member of Omicron Delta Kappa National Leadership Honor Society and was named to the Dean’s List numerous times.

Prior to rejoining the Centenary athletic department, McClain spent the 2009 summer working as a Media Relations intern with the Houston Astros Baseball Club. HISTORY

Behind the Name....Ladies and GentsThe history of the Centenary athletics nickname “Gentlemen” is quite unique. First established in the fall of 1921 by then-Centenary President George Sexton, it seems the football team had been in a fight the previous game, and Sexton sat the team down before the next game and told the players, “...from now on, you will all act like Gentlemen.”

With the majority of Centenary men also soldiers, the moniker “Gentlemen” or “Gents” was a logical choice. A tongue-in-cheek account that first mentioned the new nickname appeared in the 1923 Yoncopin (Centenary’s yearbook) in the football summary.

“...there was some doubt on the eve of the first game. Reports from the Marshall (Texas) camp had them recruiting from the boiler factories and we were made to believe that the Marshall team was coming to Shreveport to mop-up with the ‘Gentlemen.’ Well, we put on our best manners, but just couldn’t help running up a 77-0 score...”

In December of 2007, the Centenary student body held a voting process in order to add an additional mascot to the traditional Ladies and Gents. Although Ladies and Gents will remain the official nicknames of the Centenary athletics teams, Skeeter the Catahoula was chosen to provide an on-campus presence in the form of a true mascot. Now, an actual Catahoula dog that was rescued from an animal shelter in Houston, Texas, walks the campus and attends special functions. A mascot in a suit was also created and attends sporting events.

The nickname has stuck ever since and it was natural to call the women’s teams the “Ladies” when the school began women’s sports in the 1960’s.

“Skeeter” was rescued from “Citizens for Animal Protec-tion,” a non profit shelter in Houston, Texas. The shelter takes in more than 12,000 orphaned, rescued and aban-doned pets each year. Skeeter had been at the shelter for about a month.

THE COLLEGE

Centenary College of Louisiana

Centenary College of Louisiana is a private, four-year arts and sciences college affiliated with the United Methodist Church. Founded in 1825, it is the oldest chartered liberal arts college west of the Mississippi River and is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). Centenary is one of 16 colleges and universities constituting the Associated Colleges of the South (ACS) and is regularly rated as one of the top colleges in the South.

Mentioned in the Templeton Guide’s Colleges that encourage Character Development and in Peterson’s Top Colleges for Science, the College is also highly ranked in U.S. News & World Report.

In 2009, the Princeton Review tagged Centenary College as one of the “Best 368 Colleges,” and, in 2008, Newsweek named us the “Hottest Liberal Arts School You’ve Never Heard Of.”

Dr. B. David RowePresidentAn ordained United Methodist minis-ter, President Rowe holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from Southwestern University, a Master of Divinity degree from Emory Univer-sity and a Certificate in Ecumenical Studies from the World Council of

Churches and the University of Geneva. He earned the Ph.D. from Georgia State University where his research led to the dissertation entitled Cultural Leadership and Peace: An Educational Response to Religious Violence.

With more than 18 years in higher education administration, and with exten-sive planning, fundraising, and institutional marketing experience, Dr. Rowe has served Wesleyan College, Oxford College of Emory University, and the Candler School of Theology. His professional interests, which include organiza-tional transformation and global sustainability, complement his research spe-cialization in leadership development and social change. He is the co-founder of a non-profit organization, Oikos (oy’-kos), which focuses on systemic solu-tions for global sustainability.

Dr. Rowe joins Centenary at a time of transition for the College and looks forward to helping to find ways to propel Centenary into the future. Against the backdrop of the nation’s faltering economy, a new vision is emerging for Centenary College: to define church-related liberal arts education for the 21st Century. The challenge will be to create such a program while optimizing the use of shrinking resources.

With these moves, Centenary is charting a bold new course into this century and beyond. A renewed focus on undergraduate arts and sciences programs will set the stage for complementing these programs with graduate profes-sional programs, and to investigate the creation of more opportunities for students to engage global cultures through sustained and well-crafted inter-national study experiences.

A native Texan, Dr. Rowe is married to the former Jodi Hyde of College Park, Ga. They have two sons – Carter (8) and Philip (6).

HISTORY

2010 GENTS SOCCERPAGE 21

Centenary College of Louisiana has fielded an athletic team in at least one sport since 1894, when the football team faced Louisiana State University. Centenary’s football squad was one of the best in the South in the first

half of the 20th century, the high point being an undefeated 10-0 season in 1927.

Centenary produced professionals Conway Baker, Buddy Parker, and Cal Hubbard. Hubbard is a member of three halls of fame: Pro Football Hall of Fame, College Football

Hall of Fame, and Baseball Hall of Fame. However, the poor oil economy in the area forced the discontinuation of the football program in 1947.

The 1920s saw the establishment of the men’s basketball and baseball teams at Centenary. The basketball Gents have

had 45 seasons with a .500 or better winning percentage, including the 2003-2004 campaign.

From 1972 to 1976, Robert Parish dominated Centenary’s opponents, leading the Gents to an 87-21 record over that span. Parish still holds numerous Centenary records, including the single game scoring record (50 points vs. Lamar in 1972), the single season rebounding record (18.7 rpg in 1972-73), and the career record for most field

goals made (1,034). Parish was drafted in the first round by the Golden State Warriors in 1976 and later, as part of

arguably the greatest frontcourt in NBA history, won three NBA championships with the Boston Celtics in the 1980s.

In September 2003, Parish was inducted into the National Basketball Hall of Fame.

With its 1,000-seat stadium, the baseball team is attracting top players to play for Centenary and top teams to play against the Gents. Thirty-two players who put on the Centenary

uniform have gone on to play professionally. In recent years, the Gents have hosted, Arkansas, Nebraska, Texas A&M, and LSU in Shreveport.

In 1980 the Golf Magazine College Player of the Year did not come from a traditional power. Hal Sutton, a native of Shreveport who stayed home to attend Centenary, won that honor as well as

the 1980 U.S. Amateur. Sutton has gone on to win two Players Championships, a PGA Championship, and a Tour Championship, as well as earn a spot on four U.S. Ryder Cup

teams. In 2004, Sutton served as the Ryder Cup

captain for the United States squad.

Recently Centenary athletes have found their names at or near the top of the NCAA rankings. In 2000, women’s soccer player Lara Brown led all Division I players in points per game and goals per game. Ronnie McCollum followed suit during the 2000-2001 basketball season, leading the nation in scoring. Andrew Wisniewski picked up where McCollum left off, finishing in the top 20 in scoring and steals during the 2002-2003 season.

The 2010 baseball season was highlighted by two Gents signing professional contracts with Major League Baseball organizations. Right-handed pitcher Boone Whiting was named Summit League's Pitcher of the Year and Ping!Baseball Third Team All-American, while joining the St. Louis Cardinals organization following his junior season. Left handed senior Dakota Robinson also finished his collegiate career out strong, signing on with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim organization.

With the addition of men’s and women’s swimming in 2002-2003, Centenary now sponsors 16 intercollegiate sports, as many as any other Division I program in Northern Louisiana. Recent athletics highlights include the gymnastics team winning the 2004 USAG National Championship and the softball Ladies earning a trip to the NCAA Tournament in both the 2004 and 2005 seasons. In addition, Centenary athletes have won the Summit League’s prestigious Student Athlete of the Year award three times since joining the conference in the fall of 2003. Centenary has also been honored with the Summit League's annual Sportsmanship Award for the third time in 2009-10.

TREK ExperienceThe Trek Experience is a graduation requirement encompassing exploration of CA-REER, CULTURE and COMMUNITY.

The Trek Experience is driven by one clear mission:To incorporate into the required curriculum distinctive, experience-based programs for students to enhance their self-knowledge and social awareness through career/graduate school preparation, intercultural engagement, and civic involvement. To-ward these ends, the Trek Experience has four main goals to achieve:

•To integrate experiential learning into a traditional academic context, so that stu-dents can link classroom learning with practical application.•To understand that social interaction is an integral part of education.•To recognize their roles as citizens and leaders responsible for meeting the chal-lenges facing an ever-changing world.•To realize that personal reflection about their engagement with the world beyond the classroom can lead to real self-knowledge and social awareness.

Spiritual DevelopmentThe Christian Leadership Center (CLC) is an ecumenical, faith-based program com-mitted to creating opportunities for Christian leadership development through the intersection of faith and academy. The Center is dedicated to theological study, in-novative leadership training, interreligious and interdenominational dialogue, is-sues of peace and justice, spiritual formation and Christian discipleship.

Greek LifeDuring your college experience you have a unique opportunity to join the social net-work of a fraternity or sorority. This will be one of the most significant and reward-ing choices you make. Here at Centenary, close to 25 percent of current students have found a second home in one of our seven Greek organizations. Centenary is represented by seven Greek organizations: Alpha Phi Alpha, Chi Omega, Kappa Alphi Order, Kappa Sigma, Tau Kappa Epsilon, Theta Chi, and Zeta Tau Alpha.

Community ServiceFor the past 2 years The Big Event has been a huge success for both the Centenary Community and for the adjacent Highland Neighborhood. With the help of many of you, this student led initiative has grown to be an important part of life at Cente-nary. Centenary staff, faculty, and students come together to help the surrounding community by cleaning yards, painting houses, and assisting in whatever way we can.

Residence LifeThe Office of Residence Life and Housing is committed to enhancing student learn-ing and personal growth. Centenary has five residence halls: Rotary, Cline, James, Sexton and Hardin Hall. All residence halls at Centenary include FREE laundry facili-ties, computer labs, vending machines, cable television outlets, a telephone jack for each resident, room furniture (including an extra-long single bed, chest of drawers, desk, and chair), closet(s), and free internet access via wired ethernet ports (or wireless) in each room. There are no community bathrooms at Centenary; each stu-dent shares a bath with the others in their suite.

ADMINISTRATIONDr. Tom TallachDirector of Athletics

Dr. Tom Tallach has served as Cente-nary’s Director of Athletics since Fall 2007.

Since his arrival, the Gents and La-dies have seen major changes to their surroundings. The Gold Dome has a new hardwood floor, new premium seating, a new public address system, and a new weight room. The tennis courts have been resurfaced and new

screens and nets are being installed. The softball facility has new dugouts, a new backstop, and a new public address system.

These and numerous other improvements were made possible because of a dramatic increase in booster support. Tallach has high expectations for himself as well as for Centenary’s student-athletes, coaches, and other staff.

Tallach re-joined the Centenary community after most recently serving as As-sistant Athletic Director at Tarleton State University. At Tarleton, he organized and administered a comprehensive compliance program for the institution, taught graduate and undergraduate courses, and provided administrative leadership and training for many of the sports programs. He served on NCAA regional tourna-ment committees in women’s basketball and softball and delivered compliance presentations to regional and national audiences.

With the exception of a two-year period that included doctoral research, work in the family business, and basketball coaching at Ouachita Baptist University, Tal-lach spent twelve years at Texas A&M-Commerce.

He began as a graduate teaching assistant and assistant men’s basketball coach for a struggling Lions team that would win the Lone Star Conference (LSC) Championship two years later.

He then served as Assistant Athletic Director and faculty member in the De-partment of Health, Kinesiology, and Sports Studies. With primary responsibility for event management, compliance, and athletic scholarship administration, he also served as the Athletic Director for UIL (Texas High School Federation) Region II, administering championship competition in volleyball, basketball, track & field, tennis, and golf. He was later named Interim Athletic Director at the University.

Under his leadership, the Lions claimed LSC Championships in men’s basketball and women’s soccer, three coaches were named LSC Coach of the Year, and one coach was named Texas Association of Basketball Coaches Coach of the Year. He served on two NCAA regional tournament committees in women’s soccer in addi-tion to serving as Director of the 2005 NCAA Men’s Basketball Regional Tourna-ment.

During his tenure in Commerce, he was involved in and/or responsible for nu-merous facility improvements, served on many institutional committees including SACS re-accreditation, chaired the LSC Compliance Committee, helped guide the Athletic Training Education Program to national certification, and always taught at least one academic course.

A former Gent pitcher (Class of 1993), Tallach was named to the Trans-America Athletic Conference (TAAC) All-Academic Team, graduated Magna Cum Laude, was President of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee, and received the Health & Exercise Science Award. The ‘92 and ‘93 Gents captured TAAC Western Division Titles under head coach Andy Watson.

Tallach resides in Shreveport with his wife Gabriela and son Grant.

Adam WalshAssistant AD

Adam Walsh is in his sec-ond year as Assistant AD after taking over the role during the 2009-10 school year. Walsh’s duties include compliance, game day management, and the supervisor of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).

Walsh was also named the 21st head coach of the Gents basket-ball team following the 2009-10 season after serving as an assistant for the past three seasons.

Shelley ArmstrongSenior Woman Administrator

Shelley Armstrong was named Centenary’s Senior Woman Administrator in Janu-ary 2010. In that role, Arm-strong will assist in providing a valuable perspective in the administrative decision-mak-ing process.

Armstrong also serves as the men’s and women’s cross country coach and will begin her sev-enth season this year.

David HoaasFaculty Athletic Rep.

Dr. David Hoaas has served as the FAR since 2000.

As faculty athletic repre-sentative, Dr. Hoaas is charged with overseeing the mainte-nance and improvement of student-athlete welfare. He monitors the academic sup-port services, administers se-

nior-athlete exit surveys and the coaches’ certification examination, and assists in the preparation of various NCAA reports.
