3M has been a donor and friend of the Kids In Need Foundation since our founding in 1995. Honored by Kids In Need at the 2006 Gala, 3M and the 3M Foundation have made more than $6 million in fi nancial and product contributions to Kids In Need.

3M was founded in 1902 in the Lake Superior town of Two Harbors, MN. Five businessmen set out to mine a mineral deposit for grinding-wheel abrasives. But the deposits proved to be of little value, and the new Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Co. quickly moved to nearby Duluth in 1905 to focus on sandpaper products.

Sponsor of theGala Dinner

SponsorEven though they may not quite grasp the name yet, kids appreciate the concept of 3M Post-it® Notes

“Thank you for giving us the posted notes...Thank you for the posted notes because we use them all the time. We use them to remind us of stuff we think we will forget.”

Years of struggle ensued until the company could master quality production and supply chain. New investors were attracted to 3M, such as Lucius Ordway, who moved the company to St. Paul in 1910. Early technical and marketing innovations began to produce successes and, in 1916, the company paid its fi rst dividend of 6 cents a share.

The world’s fi rst waterproof sandpaper, which reduced airborne dusts during automotive manufacturing, was developed in the early 1920’s. A second major milestone occurred in 1925 when Richard G. Drew, a young lab assistant, invented masking tape - an innovative step toward diversifi cation and the fi rst of many Scotch brand pressure-sensitive tapes. In the following years technical progress resulted in Scotch® Cellophane Tape for box sealing and soon hundreds of practical uses were discovered.

In the early 1940’s, 3M was diverted into defense materials for World War II, which was followed by new ventures, such as Scotchlite™ Refl ective Sheeting for highway markings, magnetic sound recording tape, fi lament adhesive tape, and the start of 3M’s involvement in the graphic arts with offset printing plates.

In the 1950’s, 3M introduced the Thermo-Fax™ copying process, Scotchgard™ Fabric Protector, videotape, Scotch-Brite® Cleaning Pads and several new electro-mechanical products. Dry-silver microfi lm was introduced in the 1960’s, along with photographic products, carbonless papers, overhead projection systems and a rapidly growing health care business of medical and dental products.

Markets further expanded in the 1970s and 1980s into pharmaceuticals, radiology and energy control. In 1980, 3M introduced Post-it® Notes, which created a whole new category in the marketplace and changed people’s communication and organization behavior forever.

In the 1990’s, 3M continued to develop an array of innovative products, including immune response modifi er pharmaceuticals; brightness enhancement fi lms for electronic displays; and fl exible circuits used in inkjet printers, cell phones and other electronic devices.Recent innovations include Post-it® Super Sticky Notes, Scotch® Transparent Duct Tape, optical fi lms for LCD televisions, and a new family of Scotch-Brite® cleaning products that give consumers the right scrubbing power for a host of cleaning jobs.

Creative Hands by Fibre-Craft® and the Kids In Need Foundation are proud to announce the recipients of the 2010 Teacher of the Year Awards:

Terri Cloyde; Sally Reagan; and Patricia Kaynaroglu. These teachers are being recognized for their outstanding creativity in the classroom and their

ability to engage students, not only in the lessons at hand, but in the art of learning.

Teacher of the Y ear Awards

Teacher: Terri Cloyde

School: Madill Elementary, Madill, OK

Grade: 5

Project: “Not Your Parent’s Science”

Sponsor: LOFT

This is a project in which math and science are taught in a fun, different way to get students’ attention and interest. Geometric shapes are used

as the foundation of tessellations to make interesting patterns in posters. Students work with concepts such as changing liquids to solids and vice-versa and experimenting with quicksand. Measurements and readings combine the math and science studies.

Terri Cloyde is being honored not only for the project presented here but for her body of work in the classroom. In 2009, Terri received four grants from the Kids In Need Teacher Grants program. No other teacher has ever received four grants in one year.

Terri has been teaching for 17 years and has Bachelor of Science Degrees in Elementary Education and Mathematics Education. She is National Board Certifi ed as a Middle Childhood Generalist and will complete a Masters Degree in Education Administration in May of 2011.

Terri says, “I produce many of the lessons and books used in my classroom and have been a teacher since I was old enough to talk. I teach using a multi-sensory, whole brain approach to try to reach every child and make learning as fun and interactive as possible. I’ve taught in pretty much every grade level and every skill level but am currently in a fi fth grade classroom, which I love.

“The Kids In Need Teacher Grants program has been a wonderful tool in reaching the students in our district, an area that is 76% free and reduced lunches. Fifth grade is the most tested grade in Oklahoma under the No Child Left Behind act. These pre-teens are tested in math, reading, writing, science, and social studies, which is a lot of material for them to learn each year at an age when they would rather be involved in sports and talking on their cell phones. These grants allow us to get materials to keep our studies new, interesting, and interactive in a way that surprises the students. They don’t expect school to be fun, and their parents are frequently surprised, too. More than one parent wanted to know why their children didn’t want to leave school when they came to pick them up for an appointment. Imagine! Liking school!

“I’ve received nine Kids In Need Grants in the past three years, and all the students really appreciate them. I know that Kids In Need and your sponsors are committed to the students because you do so much for them, but I don’t think you realize just how much it does for their self-esteem, how it expands their views of the world to realize that life and jobs can be fun and that school can open up amazing avenues for them. You guys do wonderful things for kids and for their teachers! Thank you!!”

Project: “Literacy Through the Generations”

Sponsor: LOFT

Portland High School students explored children’s literature and discussed why books are read to very young children. They studied the developmental levels of reading and also why it is so important for them

to be role models for younger children. The students carefully chose a pre-school to donate a library of books to, picked out the books, and visited the school in order to read to the students and to present the books. Their criteria were the need of the pre-school and the values being taught to the young children. The two most valuable aspects of this grant were the experiences that the high school students (from the alternative education department) and the pre-school students had interacting together with books and the beautiful new library of “Peace” and “Multiculturalism” that the preschool was given.

Sally Reagan is part of an education family. Her mother and father are retired teachers, her two sisters have both worked in education, and her husband, Partick, is a fi fth grade teacher. Sally and Patrick have three children.

Sally received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in European History and Secondary Education from Wheaton College. She received a Master of Science Degree in Education, Literacy Education with English as a Second Language Concentration from the University of Southern Maine.

Sally has been teaching since 1994, but from 1996 to 1999, she was an English teacher in Sendai City, Japan. She has been a social studies teacher and literacy specialist at Portland High School since 2001.

Sally says, “The old saying ‘Students may not remember everything you taught them in class, but they will remember how you made them feel in your class’ has guided my entire career. I believe that students need to be challenged and held to high standards, but I also believe that in order for them to learn, they have to feel hopeful, have a desire to learn, and view success as a possibility. The idea for this project stemmed from that philosophy . . . that if students can feel like role models and recall a time when they liked to read, then they might, again, view themselves as readers.

“This was the fi rst time I had applied for a Kids In Need Grant, and I read about it on the LOFT Loves Teachers website. Part of my role as a literacy specialist is to create exciting projects and apply for grants for the teachers in my school, most of whom do not have time to do this in their daily schedules.”

Sally and other teachers at Portland High School shop for free school supplies for their students in need at Ruth’s Reusable Resources, an affi liate of the Kids In Need National Network of Resource Centers, located in Portland, ME.

Teacher of the Y ear AwardsTeacher: Patricia Kaynaroglu School: West Park Elementary School, Leadville, CO

Grade: 6-12 Special Education

Project: “Learning In Animals”

Sponsor: Offi ce Depot Foundation

In this project, students participated in the Cody Project, a program that helps train search and rescue dogs using high school and middle school students as helpers and K9 coaches. Students develop their canine training skills, hide for

dogs, build equipment, and learn to be dog handlers. As members of the team, they work together for one common goal – to save lives. More than 25 students have been involved in this project.

Patricia Kaynaroglu was born in Bryn Mawr, PA. She has fi ve children and three grandchildren and a supportive husband, Hakan, who shares her passion for community service.

Pat received a Special Education Degree from the University of Northern Colorado and has spent her career working in Special Education. She has been a classroom teacher, a therapeutic horseback riding instructor turning the riding arena into a classroom, teaching reading and math skills on the back of a horse. Pat has been an adaptive ski instructor in Vail, CO, and a private tutor.

Pat became involved in search and rescue 17 years ago when one of her tutoring students who had a passion for dogs wanted to learn about search and rescue dogs. As they started reading, they also began training Pat’s family dog. Before long, Pat and her border collie, Cody, were on a FEMA disaster response team, and her tutoring students were not only motivated to read but were hiding for her search dog. Wanting to offer a unique learning opportunity to the students in the small mountain community of Leadville, Pat established the Cody Project. She wanted to help kids learn about the importance of community service as well as motivate them to study, read, and seek a variety of carrier paths.

Pat says, “My own struggles as a student with a learning disability prompted me to want students to be successful and love learning. I love fi nding unique projects to encourage learning and to build students’ self esteem.

“Two of my friends in search and rescue helped me with the Cody Project three years ago. We needed supplies and started searching the Internet for assistance. We discovered the Kids In Need Teacher Grants program. How wonderful. It was the fi rst time I had ever applied for a grant.

“I recently met a man from China that was in town and wanted to see the search dogs work. He was a rescuer after the earthquake there and wants help training search dogs. I told him about the Cody Project because he could not fi nd people to help train his dogs. Who knows, maybe we will see a Cody Project in China one day.”

One of Pat’s students, Caitlin, age 16, wrote, “I believe the Cody Project has helped me grow not only as a dog trainer, but as a person. Being a canine coach and leader, I was expected to know more and have the answers to all types of questions. I went beyond my search and rescue hours to read books and learn facts so I was able to answer those questions. This also helped show me the value of team work. In search and rescue, you never do anything alone. Without everyone together, search and rescue wouldn’t be possible.”

Ali, age 13, also endorses the project. “I think the Cody Project should stay around to teach others how important search and rescue dogs are to the community and in a disaster.”

Each semester, many teachers are forced to scavenge for school supplies, because their students can’t afford

to purchase them and neither can their schools. The Kids In Need Foundation is dedicated to ending this shameful situation. Find out how donating a nominal percentage of

your sales can help kids and teachers get needed free school supplies while also helping your company’s sales.
