Gary Kagiavas15th YearGannon ‘91

GaryKagiavas wasappointed EdinboroUniversity's firsthead coach of theFighting Scotwomen's soccerprogram in Augustof 1996. The formerGannon Universitystandout startedthe Edinboro program that year, andsince that time it

has become one of the stronger teams in theAtlantic Region.

In his 14 seasons as head coach, Kagiavas hasguided the Fighting Scots to a 11711824 record.Youth has been the key ingredient of his teams thelast two years, and the results are indicative of that.Last year the Fighting Scots finished with a 775record, suffering four losses by a goal. They hadseveral bright moments, including a 10 upset of17thranked California(Pa.) and a tie with 25thranked Slippery Rock. Edinboro also won for thefirst time against local rival Mercyhurst.

Two years ago Kagiavas guided another youngteam, and one depleted by injuries, to a 7111 finish. That included a 32 upset ofWestern Division regular season champion Gannon.

In 2007 Edinboro finishedwith a 1353 record. That represented the most wins inschool history, and theFighting Scots capped it withtheir firstever postseason victory. Kagiavas was honored asthe PSAC West Coach of theYear. It marked the third timehe had received the honor, along with 2001 and 2005.

Hosting Indiana(Pa.) inthe first round of the PSACTournament, Edinboro handedthe Crimson Hawks a 31defeat. Slippery Rock broughtEdinboro’s season to a haltwith a 20 victory in the semifi

nals. It marked the fourth time Edinboro had qualified for the PSAC Playoffs.

In 2006, Kagiavas guided Edinboro to a 1070record. All told, the Fighting Scots have won tenormore matches five times during Kagiavas’ tenure. And once a rare occurrence to show up in theNortheast Region rankings, the Fighting Scots arenow a weekly member of the top ten.

The 2003 Fighting Scots had registered theprevious school record for wins while finishing witha 1271 record. Edinboro made its second appearance in the PSAC Playoffs. The Fighting Scotsclimbed as high as fourth in the Northeast Regionrankings during the year. In 2002 Edinboro fell onepoint shy of qualifying for postseason action, compiling a 954 record.

Kagiavas' teams accomplished a rarity in hisfirst six seasons, finishing with a better record eachyear. The 2001 Fighting Scots went out and postedan 1151 record, including a schoolrecord sixgamewinning streak. The Fighting Scots advanced to thePSAC Playoffs for the first time. Edinboro dropped a10 decision to Bloomsburg in its first postseasonventure, but that could not diminish a season whichsaw the Scots climb as high as 14th in the NSCAADivision II rankings. Along the way, the Scots defeated 13thranked Slippery Rock 30, while suffering fourof its five losses to nationallyranked opponents.

Thanks to five wins in its final seven contests,Edinboro posted its first winning season in 2000,going 1081. The Fighting Scots had a fourgamewin streak in which it held opponents scoreless for500 minutes. The team also recorded the program's first win over local rival Gannon.

The Fighting Scots weren't without theirgrowing pains, as Edinboro's firstever women'ssoccer edition finished with a 2140 record in 1996.The ledger improved slightly in 1997, as Kagiavas'second team posted a 5101 finish. The FightingScots improved to 9100 in 1998. That included a 21overtime win over West Virginia Wesleyan, an outfit ranked second in Division II at the time.

In 1999 the Fighting Scots posted a 991 finishto post their first nonlosing season. Edinborodebuted in the regional rankings during the season,a first for Kagiavas's squad. Included in the victorieswas another triumph over a nationallyranked foe,as the Fighting Scots posted a 21 win at 14thranked Slippery Rock.

Edinboro saw a run of five straight winningseasons come to an end four years ago following a693 finish, and his Fighting Scots suffered a second straight losing campaign in 2005, finishing at 793. However, thanks to a 532 ledger in the PSACWest, Edinboro made its thirdever appearance inthe PSAC Playoffs.

As someone who started the Edinborowomen’s soccer program from scratch back in1996, Gary Kagiavas knows a thing or two aboutwhat it takes to build a team. From humble beginnings, which included a 2140 first season, to fivestraight winning seasons, Kagiavas has seen theFighting Scot program grow.

A year ago Edinboro finished with a 775record while featuring an extremely young rosterfor the second year in a row. The Fighting Scotsupset 17thranked California(Pa.) and tied 25thranked Slippery Rock, in addition to picking up afirstever win over Mercyhurst. But they couldn’tovercome a powerful Pennsylvania State AthleticConference, and again struggled to score goals, with one or less in 12 of 19 matches.

But now this is a team a year older and a yearmore experienced, and Kagiavas likes what hesees. “This team should be better prepared forthe season,” related the 16thyear mentor. “Theteam is composed mainly of sophomores andjuniors, so I expect to compete with the bestteams in the PSAC and do well.”

That’s actually more than the rest of thecoaches in the PSAC predict for the Fighting Scots.Edinboro was picked to finish tenth among the 15teams in the newlook PSAC. Gone are two divisions. Now the PSAC is all one with a total of 15teams. The top eight will qualify for the PSACplayoffs.

“Experience is now a strength whereas lastyear it was a concern,” Kagiavas commented.“Good leadership is a strength. Depth is our bigconcern. One major injury to a key player and theseason may end up disappointing.”

In particular, Kagiavas feels good about theleaders on his team. He listed players such asRachel Dahlstrand, Jess Morgan, Devyn Agett andJamie Warren as key leaders, but also mentionedother players such as Taylor Stetka, Steph Tigheand Catherine Messmer as team leaders. “Ibelieve we have many committed kids ready tostep up and be leaders,” assessed Kagiavas.

With 14 letterwinners, including eightstarters back, Kagiavas has reason to believe histeam will be competitive this year. But standing inthe way once again is a loaded PSAC which maybe from top to bottom as good as any conferencein Division II.

“We play everyone in the conference thisyear,” Kagiavas pointed out. “The challenges are

many. California(Pa.), Mercyhurst, Gannon,Slippery Rock, IUP, Kutztown and West Chester allseem to be the front runners.

“Then it seems the next group is comprisedof Edinboro, East Stroudsburg, Shippensburg andBloomsburg, and the group of Lock Haven,Clarion, Milersville and Mansfield are historicallypropping up the PSAC. I can tell you that it is verydifficult to get results at any of these schools awayfrom home. This is going to be a huge challengefor us.”

The season gets underway on Friday,September 3 when the Fighting Scots hostAldersonBroaddus. That will mark the start offive straight home matches to start the season. However, if the Fighting Scots are to make a playoff run, they will have to do so with a latter part of

Senior Rachel Dahlstrand has led the team inscoring both years as a Fighting Scot.

the schedule that includes just two home contestsin the final seven matches.

“All in all, I am very optimistic about the 2010season,” concluded Kagiavas. “I believe we willdo very well. We need a little luck with injuries andscoring, but it will be a good year.”

ForwardsScoring has been an issue for the Fighting

Scots in recent years, but Kagiavas would like tothink this year’s team has the ability to put somenumbers up on the scoreboard.

For starters, there’s Rachel Dahlstrand, theleading scorer her first two years as a Scot. Theformer transfer from West Virginia led the waywith 11 goals and 4 assists for 26 points. She wasaccorded first team AllPSAC West honors.

A year earlier Dahlstrand ended the year with12 goals and 4 assists for 28 points.

Dahlstrand enters her senior year rankedfifth in career goals scored with 23 and sixth in

career points with 54.Karisa Fernandez has a bright future after fin

ishing as the secondleading scorer with 7 goalsand 2 assists for 16 points her freshman year.

“Rachel Dahlstrand is a big key for us,”admitted Kagiavas. “Karisa Fernandez and JennaMadison are other scorers for us. We brought insix forwards last year that were freshman. Theywill compete harder this year and be stronger.”

In addition to Fernandez and Madison, CassieKiplinger looks to make her mark at forward. Sheredshirted a year ago. Freshman Katherine Falleris another option at forward.

MidfieldersThe midfield appears solid with Jess Morgan,

Taylor Stetka and Melissa Leszek returning.Morgan, a junior, started all 19 matches andearned second team AllPSAC West accolades. She contributed a pair of assists. Stetka, a junior, also contributed two assists while starting 15 contests. Both enter their third year as starters.

Leszek is a former transfer from Indiana(Pa.)who finished as the thirdleading scorer with 3goals and 4 assists for 10 points while starting 15times.

“Jess Morgan, Taylor Stetka and MelissaLeszek are hardworking, experienced and readyto score for us,” predicted Kagiavas. “In the pasttwo years our midfield has not scored much. Weexpect more from them. Also, Catherine Messmerand Amanda Bartell came on strong during thespring and we hope they will be able to significantly contribute this fall.”

Messmer played in 18 matches as a freshman, while Bartell finished with 3 goals in 2009while appearing in all 19 matches, with sevenstarts.

Amber McLaughlin could also see time in themidfield, although she will also compete for timeat goalkeeper. A junior, she contributed 4 goalsand 4 assists as a freshman but was limited to 2goals a year ago.

Senior Brittanie Bidak has seen limited timewhile battling injuries the last two years.Sophomore Nicole Hoffman provides furtherdepth.

DefendersThe defense needs to rebuild with starters

Lauren Christy and Maria Dembrow gone.Between them the duo started 124 games in theircareer.

Junior midfielder Jess Morgan earned secondteam AllPSAC West honors in 2009.

“This is the position we lost the most playersin,” Kagiavas commented. “Jamie Warren andSteph Tighe played extremely well together thisspring. On the right side, Devyn Agett has startedfor three years. I’m hoping Kelsey Knoll, a transferfrom Kent State, and freshman Angela Deblassioand Chelsea Medalis can contribute quickly.”

Warren was a second team AllPSAC Westselection a year ago after starting all 19 matches, with one assist. Tighe also had an assist whileplaying mainly in a reserve role as a freshman. Shedid start four contests. Agett, a senior, has started46 matches in her career and is a season veteran. Knoll appeared in six matches while playing atKent State last year.

Sophomore Casey Rogozinski is anotherreturnee seeking time at defender. She played inseven matches last year, with a pair of starts.

GoalkeepersKate Stukbauer provides the Fighting Scots

with an experienced goalkeeper. The junior started 16 matches a year ago, totaling 5.5 shutoutsand a 1.20 goals against average.

Lindsay Hampy, a transfer from MercyhurstNorth East, and McLaughlin are expected to pushStukbauer. Kagiavas notes that McLaughlin, whois normally a midfielder and played just 22 minutesin goal, looked solid in the spring.

Edinboro University is the region’s largestand most comprehensive institution of higher education.

Under the leadership of President Jeremy D.Brown, who assumed the helm on July 1, 2007,Edinboro adopted the motto, “Great Things HappenHere!” Yet the words represent much more than atagline or catchy phrase. They reflect upon a changingand growing University that strives for excellenceregionally, nationally and globally.

Founded more than 150 years ago by thedescendants of Scottish immigrants, Edinboro’s beautiful 585acre campus is now home to more than 8,700students enrolled in over 100 undergraduate and graduate programs of study. Rich in its Scottish tradition, the University’s majors in art, animation, criminal justice, education, and speech language pathology haveearned regional recognition and national accolades.

Situated almost equal distance (about 100miles) from the cultural, entertainment and majorleague sports metropolitan areas of Cleveland,Buffalo and Pittsburgh, Edinboro is less than 20miles south of Erie, Pennsylvania’s fourth largestcity, and 20 miles north of Meadville, the CrawfordCounty seat.

Edinboro’s BaronForness Library has morethan 500,000 bound volumes and 1.4 million microform units, along with an online catalog access tonumerous databases and electronic reserves andarchives. The library, the region’s largest, isequipped with a wireless network, commuter labsand is accessible to users with visual impairments.

Edinboro’s physical plant and resources arebeginning to rival the faculty excellence that students have long found in the classrooms. TheUniversity is drawing more people to campusbecause of its state of the art facilities.

An investment of $200 million is allowing the

University to enhance theEdinboro experience for students through projects such asthe new suitestyle student housing complex known as TheHighlands at EdinboroUniversity. The $5 millionZafirovski Sports & RecreationArena opened in late 2009,meaning athletic teams can holdfull practice sessions duringinclement weather inside theregion’s largest freestanding, airsupported facility. The new $5million Human Services Building

will be ready for classes in January 2011 and the $23million expansion and renovation of the Cooper Hallscience building is underway.
