Detroit Golf ClubThe Titan golfers are continually

grateful to the members and staff ofhistoric Detroit Golf Club, who graciouslyallow the team to use the club as its homecourse. Located just five minutes from theUDM campus, DGC remains one of themost storied and prestigious country clubsin all of Michigan.

William R. Farrand founded DetroitGolf Club in 1899. At that time, the firstclub members played on a six-hole coursebuilt on rented farm land near WoodwardAvenue and Six Mile Road.

In 1914, world-renowned architectDonald Ross — who also designed suchchampionship courses as Oakland Hillsand Pinehurst No. 2, both past U.S. Opensites — began surveying a parcel of still-

rural land just north of that original DGClayout. Ross created Detroit Golf Club’scurrent 36 holes on that property. He waseven careful to preserve a trail-markingtree — which still stands today — thatIndians bent as a sapling to point the wayfrom the Detroit River to Saginaw.

Ross’ two courses at Detroit GolfClub — one of 14 charter members of theGolf Association of Michigan — openedin 1916. The North Course is still regardedas one of the top 10 courses in Michigan.Like the North, DGC’s devilish South is atrue test of golf. Both courses are heavilybunkered, an ingredient in most traditionalRoss designs, and are heavily wooded withlarge, mature trees.

After Ross completed his two-course

project, his brother Alex was hired to serveas the club’s golf professional, and he heldthat position for 31 years. His successor asclub pro was Horton Smith, who won theinaugural Masters in 1934 and played onseven Ryder Cup teams, never losing amatch between 1929 and ’41. Smith shotthe North Course record (29-33—62) in1948, some 11 years before he wasinducted into the PGA Hall of Fame.

A second former Ryder Cup player,Walter Burkemo — who won the 1953PGA Championship — is another well-known figure who has served as head proat Detroit Golf Club as is 1980 PGA ClubProfessional champion John Traub. JonGates, a past President of the MichiganPGA Section, is now in his ninth year asthe Club’s head professional.

The UDM men’s golf team practiceson both of DGC’s wonderful coursesthroughout the year. Additionally, theTitans make use of the club’s practicegreens and bunkers as well as its drivingrange, which was renovated in 1998, asthey work diligently to improve theirgames and get ready for their nexttournament.

The Golf Club annually hosts theHorton Smith Invitational on both of itscourses. Some of the best players in thestate are invited to this first major amateurtournament of each year. The field isalways regarded as the strongest at anyevent in the state, with the possibleexception of the Michigan Amateur. Anumber of past and present Titan golfers— among them Sean Hutchison, AdinLohry, John Minnich, Jason Paholsky,Cam Smith, Johnny Strawser and AdamWalicki, who tied for seventh place in2001 – have been invited to play in theHorton Smith over the years.

In 1992, Detroit Golf Club hosted theU.S. Mid-Amateur Championship won byDanny Yates. The 1999 Michigan AmateurChampionship was also staged at DGCduring its Centennial Anniversary, and thetournament was won by Randy Lewis in adramatic, 18th hole finish. The Golf Clubalso graciously opened its doors to stillanother tournament — the MidwesternCollegiate Conference Championship, hosted by UDM – in 2000.

UDM Spring OutlookIn his 20th season as the Detroit

Titans’ head golf coach, Mark Engel hasseen a lot. And he definitely likes what hesees in his latest edition as they prepare tochallenge for yet another Horizon Leaguechampionship.

Since recording UDM’s sixth men’sgolf conference title in 2007, the Titanscame in second by one shot in 2008, andsecond again, this time by five, a year ago.

“Some teams would be happy, orsatisfied, with a second-place finish in avery good league,” Engel noted. “Butwe’re just not one of those teams. Theguys have worked hard since last spring, and we’ve talked a lot about the goal ofgetting back on top. It’s a reachable goal,a very reachable goal, as long as everyonestays focused on what they have to do toget to the finish line.”

With two key seniors lost from that2008 team which came so close afterwinning no less than four in-seasontournaments – including three-timeHorizon League Player of the Year MarkSommerfeld – the Titans retooled quicklylast season without a single senior on theroster, but didn’t really have the depth

they do now. And that added ingredientshowed as they went through the fall withTop 6 finishes in all four of theirtournaments and ended up ranked amongthe Top 125 teams in the country.

The Detroit lineup features a three-time All-Horizon League senior in DavidByrne, who comes off an amazing fallcampaign. Byrne came back to schoolafter winning his third straight OntarioMatch Play championship and averaged71.6 strokes during September andOctober play. He went 4-for-4 finishing inthe Top 3 at UDM’s tournaments, including runner-up at DePaul’s JohnDallio Memorial and the GeorgetownIntercollegiate.

“Dave has been a very dependableplayer since he came to UDM, and nowhe’s an even more consistent player,”coach Engel said. “He’s really learnedhow to keep so-so rounds – by hisstandards – from becoming bad ones. He’scompletely focused on finishing hiscollege career on a high note, and I’mlooking for him to play at a very highlevel this spring.”

The Titans also return a pair ofjuniors who have earned high marksduring their first 2½ years at UDM.

One, Jeff Clarridge, was the 2008Horizon League Newcomer of the Year. The other, Britt Pronk, claimed a berth onthe 2009 All-Tournament team after tyingByrne for fourth place at the leaguechampionships. Each recorded a Top 10finish in the fall, Clarridge (tie for 10th) atMichigan State’s Spartan Classic andPronk (tie for sixth) at DePaul. And bothof them are armed with ample experienceto get the job done, having been installedin the lineup since the beginning of theirfreshman years.

“Like Dave, we’ll lean on Jeff andBritt a great deal again this spring,” Engelconfirmed. “They’ve each had some verygood rounds, and some very goodtournaments so far for us. The moreconsistent they ply this spring, the betterfor us, that’s for sure.”

To the three holdover starters, theTitans quickly added talented freshmanSimon Reyers, who saw action in each fallevent. He, too, reached a high water mark

at DePaul, claiming 15th place in the 16-team field as the Titans took second placeas a team.

The remaining spot in the lineupcame down to a dogfight, with holdoverstarter Mark Hicks and freshman SheldonKeyte both seeing playing time during thefall schedule. They’ll likely duel for astarting job again, with seniors BrianSparks and Alex Watkins, along withjunior transfer Adam Istvan, also in themix.

“I think the ability of the twofreshmen, and Mark’s year of experience, make us stronger this year. Simon andSheldon, for example, both came to UDMknowing what it took for their high schoolteams to win and what it took for them tobe successful individually. They’vebrought a lot to the table,” Engel noted.

“When you take that, and add it towhat guys like Dave, Jeff and Britt havebeen giving us, I do think we’re strongerthis year and it’s been showing. We allfeel like there’s some unfinished businessstill out there and we’ll do everything wecan to make sure it’s taken care of.”

Tough graduation losses aside, theTitans still crafted quite a successfulseason in 2009.

It might not have been expected bysome outsiders, what with a pair of four-year starters – three-time Horizon LeaguePlayer of the Year Mark Sommerfeld anddependable Mikhial Pasic – no longer in alineup that won four tournaments in 2007-08 and no senior on the 2009 playingroster at all. But UDM was quite solidnonetheless and battled hard for theconference championship, losing by fivestrokes after a two-day duel withCleveland State.

Three veterans anchored the lineupbeginning with David Byrne, an All-League golfer who succeeded Sommerfeldin the top spot in the Detroit lineup. Byrnerecorded Top 20 finishes in everytournament but one last year, averaged73.3 strokes on the season to pace theTitans and recorded his third straight topfour finish at the HL championships.

The season started off on a goodnote as Detroit claimed second place atMichigan State’s Spartan Classic. Byrneand sophomores Jeff Clarridge and BrittPronk maintained their positions at the topof the lineup as the season unfolded, whilefreshman Mark Hicks made his debut atNo. 4, where he’d play all season.

Later in the fall, the Titans wouldcontinue to shine, boasting high finishes atDePaul (third) and Cleveland State (fifth)along the way.

As the spring unfolded, Detroitstarted slowly on the course, but kept

gathering momentum as it headed into thepost-season. In the final tune-up beforemeeting all of their Horizon League rivals,Detroit kept climbing the leader board andtook third place at its own TitansInvitational while Byrne fired a two-under-par 214 to capture medalist honors.

At the league championships, theTitans moved up from second place afterRound 1 and vaulted into the 36-hole leadwith a three-shot advantage heading intothe final day.

They maintained their edge foranother nine, but were caught by aCleveland State charge as Detroit endedup settling for second place at the leaguetournament for a second straight season.

Byrne and Pronk tied for fourthplace individually as they both earned aspot on the 2009 All-Tournament Team, while Byrne also collected a third straightAll-Horizon League Award from thecoaches.

Byrne closed out the year byreceiving All-America Scholar recognitionfrom the Golf Coaches Association ofAmerica. As a team, the Titans received aPresidential Award from the GCAA forposting one of the seven highest DivisionI grade point averages in the country.

Men’s golf was reinstated as avarsity sport at Detroit in the fall of 1977and, since that time, has become one ofUDM’s strongest intercollegiateprograms. UDM has won six HorizonLeague golf titles, matching Oral Robertsfor the most by any conference member inhistory.

The Titans have reached a zenith inthe last 11 years, dominating the HorizonLeague by winning their conferencechampionship five times while finishingsecond on three occasions and third stillanother. The most recent title came in2007, when Detroit led from start-to-finish en route to the coveted crown.Detroit crowded the top of the leaderboard – medalist David Byrne, MarkSommerfeld and Mikhial Pasic finished 1-3-4 individually – as the threesome each

made the All-Tournament squad andpropelled the Titans to a berth in the WestRegional at Arizona State.

Detroit’s recent conference trophyhaul began in 1999, when the Titans wontheir initial MCC (as the Horizon Leaguewas originally known) Championshipunder coach Mark Engel, and second ever. The win was claimed at Quail HollowCountry Club, near Cleveland, by astaggering 27 strokes. Detroit paced thattournament from start-to-finish, too. The’99 Titans placed three players – JasonHartman, Brad Spears and current UDMassistant coach Luke LaFave – on the all-conference team for the first time ever.Hartman fired a one-under-par 215 tobecome UDM’s first individualconference champion.

In 2001, Detroit earned its first-ever

automatic bid to the NCAA GolfRegionals – UDM would finish 24th inthe West at Oregon State that year – aftercapturing another conference crown. TheTitans led wire-to-wire at Cog HillCountry Club’s famed Dubsdread Course– longtime home of the PGA Tour’sWestern Open – and they ended uptopping UW-Green Bay by six shots.Titans Brent McClung, Jesse Maythamand Adam Walicki each finished in the topsix individually to make the All-Tournament Team.

A season later, the Titans – using thesame starting five as a year earlier –captured a second straight league title, coming in 10 strokes ahead of the field atGreen Bay Country Club. LaFave andJohnny Strawser finished 2-3 in theindividual standings to earn All-

Tournament honors as the Titans went onto their second straight berth in the NCAAWest Regionals, held that spring at NewMexico.

After a three-year absence from thetop of the standings, Detroit retooledsuccessfully and added another HLchampionship in 2005. This time, theTitans came from off the pace as theygrabbed the lead with a blistering secondround and extended their margin over thelast 18 holes for a 10-shot victory. ThreeTitans – Kyler Murphy, Sean Hutchisonand Sommerfeld – made the All-Tournament Team en route to thechampionship and a berth in the NCAACentral Regionals at Notre Dame.

Looking back past the start of therecent run, the 1999 championship wasactually the Titans’ second MCC golf titleever. The first came in 1987, when theywon the school’s initial MCCchampionship in any men’s sport. Undercoach Brad Kinsman, Detroit led wire-to-wire over 54 holes at the Golf Club ofIndiana, paced by sophomore MikeCairns, who came in second placeindividually.

In addition to their six league golfchampionships, the Titans have alsofinished second in the conference fivedifferent times (1986, 1988, 2000, 2008and 2009) and placed third on three otheroccasions (1989, 1992 and 2005).Seventeen different Titans have earnedAll-League honors in the past, withSommerfeld, a 2003 senior, the first to doit four straight times. Strawser and Byrnereceived the honor three times, whileseven others – Hartman, Cairns, LaFave,Spears, Walicki, Norm Dickson and JasonPaholsky – have all accepted the awardtwice.

In 2006, Sommerfeld became thefirst Titan to be named Horizon LeaguePlayer of the Year, and he repeated theaward in each of the next two years.Additionally, seven UDM golfers havebeen named Newcomer of the Year since1992.

The “original” era of Titans golf, which spanned the period of 1926 to ’61,saw the team make three entries into theNCAA Championships. Their best

showing came in 1951, when the Titanswere fourth in the tournament staged atOhio State’s Scarlet Course. Detroit juniorSam Kocsis was the qualifying medalistthat year, earning the Number 1 seed forthe match play tournament whichdetermined the individual nationalchampion.
