Interference

• Team must do everything – generate ideas, write skit, sew costumes, create props, design machines.

• Every part of solution belongs to the team.• Non-team members may not interfere with this

process.• Someone can teach skills but not how to perform them

on the team’s solution.• Others may do shopping from team provided list.• Only team members may do choreography, staging

and stage directions for skit.• Presentation may not involve appraisers.

Challenge Overview

• Design, build, and test a Structure made only of newsprint and glue.

• Reduce the props and scenery used in the Presentation to fit inside a 30in x 24in x 48in (76.20cm x 60.96cm x 121.92cm) container.

• Reuse a story about a Newsworthy Event in a nation other than your own.

• Recycle newsprint by using it creatively in a costume or prop.

• Create two Side Trips and integrate them into the Presentation.

Designing and Building the Structure

• a. Design a Structure that will hold weight. At the Tournament, Teams will test the strength of the Structure by stacking weights upon a Pressure Board that is resting on the Structure. (Section C.4 shows a diagram of a Structure Tester.)

• b. Teams may not use any type of technology that allows the team to input the Challenge specifications to design, create or aid in the testing of the Structure. Teams must make any Jig(s) they use in the construction of the Structure. Jigs are a template or guide the team uses to help in building the Structure.

Structure Specifications• Materials: The only materials teams may use in

building the Structure are printed newsprint and commercially available Glue.

• Newsprint is a low-grade, machine-finished, printed (either black and white or color) paper made from wood pulp used chiefly for newspapers. The “glossy” advertising or magazine inserts included with some newspapers are NOT considered newsprint.

• Teams may tear, cut, or shape the newsprint in any way they wish.

• Team members must do all customized shaping of the newsprint.

2010 Challenge E 15

Structure Specifications• Teams may not apply anything other than

commercially available Glue to the newsprint. • For the purposes of this Challenge, Glue is any

commercially available adhesive material applied in a non-solid form capable of creating a permanent bond.

• The Glue may be used to join pieces of paper or as a coating.

• Glues that require mixing with water are permitted, but teams may not produce their own “homemade” Glues.

• Teams should be prepared to supply the container for the Glue they used to build the Structure.

Clarification #3• A.3.a.ii should read: Your team may not apply

anything other than commercially available Glue to the newsprint. For the purposes of this Challenge, Glue is any commercially available adhesive material applied in a non-solid form capable of creating a permanent bond. The Glue may be used to join pieces of paper or as a coating. Glues that require mixing with water are permitted, but teams may not produce their own "homemade" Glues. The addition of water to a commercially available Glue will not be considered a "homemade" Glue. However, the addition of any substance other than water to a commercially available Glue will be considered the production of "homemade" Glue. Teams should be prepared to supply the container for the Glue they used to build the Structure.

Structure Weight and Height

• b. Weight of Structure: The total weight of the Structure may not exceed 75 grams.

• c. Height of Structure: The height of the Structure must be at least 7.5in (19.05cm) and no more than 9in (22.86cm).

2010 Challenge E 18

Structure Specifications

• d. When the Structure is completed for testing it MUST be a single unit.A Structure might be constructed of many individual pieces, but at the beginning of testing, it must be one unit. Multiple free-standing pieces placed on the Tester will not meet Challenge requirements.

• (Testing begins when the Pressure Board is placed on the Tester.

2010 Challenge E 19

Structure Specifications & Tester• e. The Structure must fit on the Structure Tester (C.4). An

opening that can accept a circular column with an outside diameter of 2in (5.08cm) must run the entire height of the Structure. This is to be sure the Structure will fit easily around the 1in (2.54cm) Safety Pole on the Structure Tester, but not through the hole in the Pressure Board.

• f. When the Structure sits on the Tester Base, it must fit completely within the Tester Base, around the Safety Pole and rest only on the Tester Base.

• The only places the Structure may make contact with the Structure Tester, when it is initially placed, are the top surface of the Tester Base, the bottom surface of the Pressure Board and the safety pole.

Pg 4 A.3.e-f

Page 20: 2010 Challenge E2 Side Trips Teams show off special talents Items not scored in Central Challenge May be a specific part of a scored element such as painting

2010 Challenge E 20

Structure Testing Procedure:

• The team may choose whether to place the Structure onto the Structure Tester one part at a time or as a single unit.

• When the Structure is completed for testing it MUST be a single unit. A Structure might be constructed of many individual pieces, but at the beginning of testing, it must be one unit in the same orientation as it was presented at Check-In. Make sure the Structure does not touch any Safety Supports of the Structure Tester Base when the Structure is placed. At no time during weight placement may the Structure touch the Safety Supports (see C.4.h.ii).

• The Structure may touch the Safety Pole.

Structure Scoring

• The team will earn points for the Structure in two ways:– For the Weight Held Ratio Only the weights that

are physically on the Pressure Board when weight placement ends are included in the Official Weight Held.

• The Weight Held Ratio (WHR) is the Official Weight Held in pounds divided by the Structure’s weight in grams, rounded to two decimal places. (Structures that do not meet specifications will receive a weight held of zero.)

– For the Structure’s Quality and Creativity of Design

The Scaled Official Weight Held

• In each competitive Level, the Structure with the highest Weight Held Ratio score will receive 150 points.

• The score for all other teams in that Level will be based on the percentage of their Structure’s WHR compared to the highest.

Team’s score = (WHR ÷ highest WHR in Level) × 150

• This score added to the scores the team earns for the items listed below will equal the total Raw Score.

• Question 3

• 3. A team from a U.S. Affiliate indicates on their Tournament Data Form that the Newsworthy Event is “fan reaction to Michael Jackson’s death” and provides an article from a German newspaper. Upon reading this, what should the Prep Area Appraiser do?

Page 33: 2010 Challenge E2 Side Trips Teams show off special talents Items not scored in Central Challenge May be a specific part of a scored element such as painting

2010 Challenge E 33

• Answer 3

• 3. Reference: A.6.a. & A.6.b. The Prep Area Appraiser needs to consider the Newsworthy Event and article carefully. If the team from a U.S. Affiliate has brought an article from a German newspaper and the article tells about German fan reaction, their choice is compliant (the event is in Germany). However, if the article from a German newspaper tells about fan reaction in Los Angeles, their choice is non-compliant (the event is in the U.S.).

2010 Challenge E 34

• Question 4

• 4. A team decides to not use props or scenery, but brings an empty, wheeled duffle bag that is 14in x 14in x 32in (35.56cm x 35.56cm x 81.28cm) and declares it to be their team-provided container with rigid sides. What should the Prep Area Appraiser do?

Page 35: 2010 Challenge E2 Side Trips Teams show off special talents Items not scored in Central Challenge May be a specific part of a scored element such as painting

2010 Challenge E 35

• Answer 4

• 4. Reference: A.6.c. As long as the wheeled duffle bag is the type that has “rigid” sides, the Prep Area Appraiser should award the 10 points for D.3.c. A collapsible-sided bag would not be compliant and should receive 0 points for D.3.c. It doesn’t matter that the container holds no props or scenery since the team elected not to have any.

Page 36: 2010 Challenge E2 Side Trips Teams show off special talents Items not scored in Central Challenge May be a specific part of a scored element such as painting

2010 Challenge E 36

• Question 5

• 5. A team brings all props and scenery in a cardboard box measuring 24in x 20in x 40in (60.96cm x 50.8cm x 101.6cm) where they have overlapped/folded the top pieces. Everything fits with the exception of one long item that protrudes through the overlapping closure by about 1in (2.54cm). What should the Prep Area Appraiser do?

Page 37: 2010 Challenge E2 Side Trips Teams show off special talents Items not scored in Central Challenge May be a specific part of a scored element such as painting

2010 Challenge E 37

• Answer 5

• 5. Reference: A.6.c.ii. The Prep Area Appraiser should inform the team that their container is non-compliant because the props and scenery are not fully enclosed in the container, and will receive 0 points for D.3.c. unless they bring it into compliance. The team could eliminate the prop that does not fit into the container, but it is up to the team to come up with a valid solution.

• Question 7• 7. A team brings two standard folding

chairs for their Presentation along with their team-provided container. When told that the chairs have to be inside the container, they say that the Rules of the Road states that furniture items like chairs are exempt. What should the Prep Area Appraiser do?

Page 39: 2010 Challenge E2 Side Trips Teams show off special talents Items not scored in Central Challenge May be a specific part of a scored element such as painting

2010 Challenge E 39

• Answer 7

• 7. Reference: A.6.c. The Prep Area Appraiser should inform the team that the chairs are not allowed in the Presentation unless they can fit them into the team-provided container. Chairs may be exempt from cost, but they are not exempt from the container requirement.

Page 40: 2010 Challenge E2 Side Trips Teams show off special talents Items not scored in Central Challenge May be a specific part of a scored element such as painting

2010 Challenge E 40

• Question 8• 8. A team member is wearing a Roman

toga and also has a modern saxophone strapped around his neck. The sax clearly will not fit inside the team-provided container. The team member says that the saxophone is part of his costume. What should the Appraisers do?

Page 41: 2010 Challenge E2 Side Trips Teams show off special talents Items not scored in Central Challenge May be a specific part of a scored element such as painting

2010 Challenge E 41

• Answer 8

• 8. Reference: A.6.c. The container requirement refers to props, scenery, and other materials, but not costumes. If an item is worn it is a costume. If it is merely held it is a prop. So, in this case, since the sax is attached to the team member without being held, it can be considered part of the costume. However, if the team member wanted to walk into the presentation carrying a sax in his hands, this would make the sax a prop by definition. It would, therefore, have to fit into the container, or be disallowed.

2010 Challenge E 42

• Question 11

• 11. In the Launch Area, before the Presentation time begins, the team opens their team-provided container, removes the contents, and puts together a backdrop from the contents. What should the Appraisers do?

Page 43: 2010 Challenge E2 Side Trips Teams show off special talents Items not scored in Central Challenge May be a specific part of a scored element such as painting

2010 Challenge E 43

• Answer 11

• 11. Reference: Breaking DI News A.6.c. and Published Clarification #1: The Appraisers should inform the team that any item not fully enclosed in the team-provided container at the beginning of the Presentation cannot be used during the Presentation.

• Question 12

• 12. During the Presentation, a team member removes part of his/her costume and uses it as a prop or scenery. What should the Appraisers do?

Page 45: 2010 Challenge E2 Side Trips Teams show off special talents Items not scored in Central Challenge May be a specific part of a scored element such as painting

2010 Challenge E 45

• Answer 12

• 12. Reference: A.6.c.iii. and D.3.c. Since the Challenge clearly specifies that all props and scenery must be fully enclosed in the team-provided container, the Appraisers must:

• 1) notify the Head Appraiser to change the score on the Prep Area Score sheet (item D.3.c.) to a 0, since all of the props and scenery were not fully enclosed in the container

• 2) consider the impact of the ineligible prop or scenery when scoring D.3.a, and possibly even D.3.d, assessing deductions proportional to the impact.

Page 46: 2010 Challenge E2 Side Trips Teams show off special talents Items not scored in Central Challenge May be a specific part of a scored element such as painting

2010 Challenge E 46

• Question 13

• 13. A team brings all props and scenery in a container that does not meet the requirements of A.6.c - either the container was too large, or it had an open side, or perhaps the sides weren’t “rigid”. The Prep Area Appraiser informs the team that they may attempt to make an adjustment, but they decline or are unable. What should the Prep Area Appraiser do?

Page 47: 2010 Challenge E2 Side Trips Teams show off special talents Items not scored in Central Challenge May be a specific part of a scored element such as painting

2010 Challenge E 47

• Answer 13

• 13. Reference: A.6.c The Prep Area Appraiser should score 0 for element D.3.c as required by the Challenge. He/she should talk with the team members about their issues and their intent around the requirements of the container. If they seem to have purposely disregarded the intent of A.6.c, deciding to forego the points of D.3.c, then the Prep Area Appraiser should bring this to the attention of the Head Appraiser or Challenge Master for a discussion of an Illegal Procedure deduction. Otherwise, the team may move the container into the Launch Area and use the contents during the Presentation.

• Question 6

• 6. A team selects “craftsmanship in construction of their team-provided container” as a Side Trip. What should the Prep Area Appraiser do?

Page 55: 2010 Challenge E2 Side Trips Teams show off special talents Items not scored in Central Challenge May be a specific part of a scored element such as painting

2010 Challenge E 55

• Answer 6

• 6. Reference: B.2. The Prep Area Appraiser needs to check the Tournament Data Form to see what the team has specified in PART THREE #4: “Briefly describe how your container exhibits creativity.” If the team specified “the creative craftsmanship of the container” (or other wording leading to an overlap with the Side Trip description), then the team must either select a new Side Trip choice, or specify another aspect of creativity of the container to be appraised. All copies of the Tournament Data Form must be changed to reflect the new choices.

Check-In Room• Focus on team members• Only team members handle structures. Structure Check-In

Appraisers will always avoid touching the• Structure.• Structure is weighed (as a single unit)

– Total structure weight ≤ 75.0 grams – Appraiser will then check:

• Structure passes over 2 inch column• Structure fits onto tester base• 7 1/2” ≤ structure height above tester base ≤ 9”• Only newsprint has been used.• Glue was commercially available and not homemade.

Page 57: 2010 Challenge E2 Side Trips Teams show off special talents Items not scored in Central Challenge May be a specific part of a scored element such as painting

2010 Challenge E 57

Check-In Procedure

• Each team should go through Structure Check-In 1 hour before their performance time.

• Usually Structure Check-in will be in morning, Performance in afternoon – Teams should check in same order as Performances

• Teams will be at Check-in for about 10-15 min.– Weighing and qualifying weight-bearing newsprint and glue

structures– Measuring / Verifying structures meet dimensional specifications– Discussions with appraisers about building experience– Wood structures will be kept for safe-keeping, told when to pick

up for performance (please bring appropriate container)• Best for teams to have container for safe-keeping of structure

2010 Challenge E 58

General Check-In Procedures• No food or drink should be allowed on the Check-In table.

• Appraisers should NOT touch the Structure before it has been officially tested during the team’s Presentation.

• When setting up the Check-In Area, position the scale so it will be away from drafts – but so team members may observe the scale readings.

• Tape a line on the floor for kids to stand behind while you are weighing or measuring.

• Electronic scales have a tendency to drift, especially during the warming phase. Periodically check with calibrated weights in the range of values you are measuring or use the calibration procedure for the scale.

• The scale should be reading in grams.

• Keep air currents to a minimum. If readings on the scale fluctuate. Use a median reading if necessary.

Page 59: 2010 Challenge E2 Side Trips Teams show off special talents Items not scored in Central Challenge May be a specific part of a scored element such as painting

2010 Challenge E 59

General Check-In Procedures

• Some Structures may not easily fit on the scale. It is a good idea to have a light, rigid add-on surface (cardboard, plastic) of roughly 10in x 10in (25cm x 25cm) to increase the size of the scale surface. Make sure that the scale is re-zeroed after adding such a surface before the team places the Structure on top. Make sure that this surface plus 100 grams does not exceed the scale capacity. Be aware that adding such a surface increases the sensitivity to air drafts.

Check In Procedure

Greet The Team• Confirm that the Team name, membership number and

Level on the Structure Check-In Form match the team presenting its Structure.

• Record the time the team arrived in Check-In on the Structure Check-In Form.

• Be sure the team has a Structure that will be tested as a single unit at the Tournament. If they do not, point out section A.3.d in the Challenge.

• Be sure the team has Page 2 of their Tournament Data Form.

• Remind the Team Manager that the team members need to answer your questions.

Check-In ProcedureWeigh the Structure1. Ask the team to remove the Structure from the protective

container the team uses. 2. Show the team that the scale reads zero before the

Structures are placed on the scale. 3. Instruct the team to place the place the Structure on the

scale. 4. Once the scale reading stabilizes verbally state the

measured weight of the Structure aloud.5. Ask a team member to verify the weight reading on the

scale. 6. Verify that it does not exceed 75 grams (A.3.b) 7. Record the official Structure weight on the Structure Check-

In Form and ask a team member to verify and initial that it is written accurately. (This is done to provide the team confidence that this critical measurement is taken seriously and performed accurately.)

Check In Procedure Does Structure Fit Tester Base?

• A team member must place the Structure on the representation of the Tester Base so that a 2in. (5.1cm) outside diameter cylinder passes through the Structure without binding.

• Validate that the Structure will not touch the Safety Supports or Safety Shields.

• Measure the combined height while the Structure rests on the representation of the Tester Base. Verify that the Structure is at least 7.5in. (19.1 cm) and not more than 9.0in. (22.9 cm) high.

2010 Challenge E 63

Evaluate Construction of Structure

• Make sure that the team constructed the Structure using only Newspaper and Glue.

• The Check-In Appraisers will reserve the right to recall the Structure to the Check-In Area after the team’s Presentation to verify the team used only Newspaper and Glue.

• If the Check-In Appraisers want to verify this, they will note it on the Structure Check-In Form.

Structures that Don’t Meet Specifications

• The Structure Check-In Appraisers will make every effort, within reasonable scheduling constraints, to allow the team the time to bring their Structure into compliance with the above specifications.

• Teams may repeat Check-in to bring structure into compliance.

• Any team whose Structure does not meet the above specifications will receive an Official Weight Held of zero.

• However, the team may still present their solution and earn points for other Challenge requirements.

Page 65: 2010 Challenge E2 Side Trips Teams show off special talents Items not scored in Central Challenge May be a specific part of a scored element such as painting

2010 Challenge E 65

Score Structure Workmanship

• The Structure Check-In Appraisers will evaluate the Structure’s Creativity and Quality of the Design and note the scores on the Structure Check-In Form.

• Since this is a subjective score, at least two Appraisers will need to score and record this item.

• Do not share the score with the team. Place the Structure Check-In Form into an envelope.

Pg 7 C.2.h

Page 66: 2010 Challenge E2 Side Trips Teams show off special talents Items not scored in Central Challenge May be a specific part of a scored element such as painting

2010 Challenge E 66

Completing Check-In

• The team will place their Structure into a team-supplied storage container.

• The Structure Check-In Appraisers will seal the container. The container should be sealed with masking tape and the envelope containing the Structure Check-In Form should be attached to the container in this process.

• The container with the Structure inside will be stored in a designated space until the team retrieves it for their Presentation.

• Wish the team well. Ask if they have any questions.

• Question 1• 1. A Structure measures 7in (17.78cm) tall

on the first Check-In, but all other requirements are met. The Check-In Appraisers inform the team of the height requirement, and the team retreats for a “fix.” They come back with a small piece of newsprint attached to a top corner of the Structure that adds ½in (1.27cm) to the height. What should the Check-In Appraisers do?

Page 68: 2010 Challenge E2 Side Trips Teams show off special talents Items not scored in Central Challenge May be a specific part of a scored element such as painting

2010 Challenge E 68

• Answer 1

• 1. Reference: A.3.c. Congratulate the team, their Structure is now compliant. Note that there is no specification for how much of the Structure must meet the height requirements.

Page 69: 2010 Challenge E2 Side Trips Teams show off special talents Items not scored in Central Challenge May be a specific part of a scored element such as painting

2010 Challenge E 69

• Question 2

• 2. The Check-In Appraisers notice that the team’s Structure is basically off-white in color. When they ask the team about this, the team says that one of the builders was allergic to newspaper ink, so they acquired fresh newsprint in a roll from a Web store. They even brought the roll with them to show the Appraisers. Also, when asked about the type of glue used, they said that they had experience with papier-mâché and used a great recipe to make their glue. What should the Check-In Appraisers do?

Page 70: 2010 Challenge E2 Side Trips Teams show off special talents Items not scored in Central Challenge May be a specific part of a scored element such as painting

2010 Challenge E 70

• Answer 2

• 2. Reference: A.3.a. Inform the team that their Structure is not compliant in two regards. The Structure must be made of printed newsprint and commercially manufactured glue regardless of allergic team members or their glue making skills.

2010 Challenge E 71

Retrieving Structure for Performance

• Remind the team to collect the structure approximately 20 minutes before the team’s scheduled Presentation time, one or more team members must return to the Structure Check-In Area to collect the Structure and carry it to the Prep Area at the Presentation Site.

• When the team returns to collect their Structure in the container, record the time it is returned to the team on the outside of the envelope containing the Structure Check-In Form.

• Team members may not break the seal on the storage container until the Prep Area Appraiser directs the team to do so.

• The team may not modify or add anything to the Structure after they have placed it in the storage container.

Structure Testing• When a team member’s head is below the level of the Pressure

Board AND the Safety Shield in front of the team member’s face has been removed, that team member must wear protective goggles for safety. If the team member is not wearing goggles, the Weight Placement Appraiser must stop weight placement until either the Safety Shield is replaced or the team member has put on goggles.

• Under no circumstances may a team member touch or come into contact with a weight stack that is rotating or moving. Team members or Adult Assistants must not try to stabilize the weight stack by holding the weight that is being placed.

• Team members and any Adult Assistants who are placing weights must wear closed-toed shoes.

• Note: Teams may use the entire eight minutes for weight placement, regardless of whether or not they have ended the performance of their Story.

Stop Weight Placement

• Stop weight placement if any of the conditions in C.4.h of the Challenge occur: – The team has elected to stop weight placement. – The Pressure Board or the Structure touches ANY of

the four Safety Supports or ANY of the Safety Shields of the Structure Tester.

– Placed weights reach the mark that is 1 inch (2.5 cm) below the top of the Safety Pole or extension pipe(s), if used. The mark does not have to be visible at that point, but the team may add no further weights.

– The eight-minute time limit ends.

Structure Testing/Performance

• When the time limit expires, the team may not continue to place weights or continue their Presentation.

• However, if any of the other events listed above occur, the team may continue with the performance part of their Presentation or call “Time,” letting the Appraisers know they are finished with their Presentation.

• If the time limit has not ended, but the “performance part” of the team’s Presentation has, the team may continue to place weights until one of the events listed above occurs.

Adult Assistant• Elementary Level and Middle Level teams may elect to use an Adult Assistant (18

years old or older) to help place or remove weights of 25lbs (11.34kg) or more. • Team members must direct the placement or removal and support the weight to the

best of their ability if they use an Adult Assistant.

• The Adult Assistant:• i. May assist in the placement or removal of weights weighing 25lbs (11.34kg) or

more. – assist means that an adult may help a team member or team members lift, move, and set a

weight that the team member(s) might not otherwise be able to handle alone. – Team member(s) must actively participate in lifting and carrying the weight to the

weight stack. • ii. Must wait in an area the Appraisers designate until a team member directs them to

move towards the weights. The team member will direct the Adult Assistant to the specific weight for which they want assistance.

• iii. Must return to the designated waiting area between each weight placement or removal.

• iv. May only respond to directions from team members or Appraisers.

Page 83: 2010 Challenge E2 Side Trips Teams show off special talents Items not scored in Central Challenge May be a specific part of a scored element such as painting

2010 Challenge E 83

Adult Assistant• v. May not direct weight placement or removal in

any way. If, in the opinion of the Appraisers, the Adult Assistant is directing ANY aspect of weight selection or placement or removal, the Appraisers will halt weight placement or removal, warn the Adult Assistant of the inappropriate action and remind him/her of the team’s responsibility.

• The Appraiser will instruct the team to remove any weight(s) that they placed with excess adult assistance or direction. Weight placement or removal will then resume. Presentation time will not stop.

Adult Assistant

• vi. If the Adult Assistant engages in any further inappropriate activity, the Appraisers will direct him/her to withdraw from the Presentation Site. Team members must then place or remove any additional weights without the aid of an Adult Assistant and will be limited to weights of less than 25lbs (11.34kg).

• vii. Weights placed with inappropriate adult assistance or direction will not count towards the calculation of the Official Weight Held.

Post Presentation Weight Removal

• Instruct team to remove any weight(s) not held for 4 seconds and return them to the weight storage mat.

• Supervise removal of weights officially held for score. Weights should be returned to the weight storage mat.

• Verify that the number and size of weights match the tally kept on the Weight Placement Form.

• Have a team member verify the tally and sign the Weight Placement Form. (The Adult Assistant may also verify and sign the tally for an Elementary Level team). The team member will also initial the form in the box next to the listing of the last weight placed on the Structure Tester.

• Question 9

• 9. A team has added a small piece of newsprint to their structure to make it taller to pass the minimum height requirement. When they place their structure on the tester base, they accidentally dislodge this piece and it falls on the floor. What should the Weight Placement Appraiser do?

Page 87: 2010 Challenge E2 Side Trips Teams show off special talents Items not scored in Central Challenge May be a specific part of a scored element such as painting

2010 Challenge E 87

• Answer 9

• 9. Reference: A.3.d, C.3.b and C.3.c. Unfortunately, the Weight Placement Appraiser must indicate to the team that the Structure is no longer valid and will receive a weight held score of 0. The Structure is no longer compliant because 1) at the beginning of testing, per A.3.d it must be one unit, and 2) according to C.3.b must be tested in the same manner as presented in Check-in. It is up to the team to deal with this situation. They may try to reattach the piece as it was in Check-in. This is OK, as long as the Structure is not modified from the checked-in design. Even if they don’t attempt reattachment and therefore don’t qualify for weight held, the team members may stack weights as part of their Presentation. Note that if this piece had fallen off after the Pressure Board had been placed, weight placement would proceed normally.

2010 Challenge E 88

• Question 10

• 10. After several minutes of an Elementary Level Presentation, no team member has even placed the Pressure Board on the Structure. The Weight Placement Appraiser notes that the team has a Structure that passed all Check-In requirements. He is beginning to feel that the team will run out of time before they can properly test the Structure. He remembers hearing a story about some other competition where a young team thought that they were supposed to test the Structure after their 8-minute Presentation time. What should the Weight Placement Appraiser do?

Page 89: 2010 Challenge E2 Side Trips Teams show off special talents Items not scored in Central Challenge May be a specific part of a scored element such as painting

2010 Challenge E 89

• Answer 10

• 10. Reference: The Destination: Time Limit. The Appraiser should do nothing, as hard as that may seem. It is the team’s decision about how they will complete their Presentation, including Structure testing.

Page 90: 2010 Challenge E2 Side Trips Teams show off special talents Items not scored in Central Challenge May be a specific part of a scored element such as painting

2010 Challenge E 90

Post Presentation Weight Removal

• Inspect the Structure to verify that no materials other than printed newsprint and glue are present. If, upon inspection there are questions regarding the materials used, or if the Check-In Appraisers have requested that the Structure be returned to Check-In (as indicated by checking the box on the Structure Check-In Form), return the Structure to Check-In for further inspection.

• Talk with the team members about their experiences building the Structure.

Page 91: 2010 Challenge E2 Side Trips Teams show off special talents Items not scored in Central Challenge May be a specific part of a scored element such as painting

2010 Challenge E 91

Sticky Notes• Appraisers are expected to write brief, positive

comments on sticky notes for each team. • These notes are returned to the team, with the scores

for their Presentation. • The sticky notes are an important part of Appraiser

feedback for teams; to most young people, words are often more meaningful and rewarding than score numbers.

• Appraisers must do their best, through their sticky notes, to let the teams know that the Appraisers were watching their Presentation closely and that they appreciate the team’s effort.

• Appraisers must be sure, however, that their sticky notes are appropriate and do not mislead teams.

Page 92: 2010 Challenge E2 Side Trips Teams show off special talents Items not scored in Central Challenge May be a specific part of a scored element such as painting

2010 Challenge E 92

Sticky Notes• Sticky Notes MUST NOT: • Give teams any expectation about their

score “This is the best vehicle I’ve seen all day!” • Be critical “If you had put more effort into your

vehicle, it would have probably worked.” • Make suggestions “Your team should talk

louder during your Presentation!” • Provide Interference “You should fix the

vehicle’s steering system before the next Tournament.”

Page 93: 2010 Challenge E2 Side Trips Teams show off special talents Items not scored in Central Challenge May be a specific part of a scored element such as painting

2010 Challenge E 93

Sticky Notes• Sticky Notes MUST: • Be positive “You should be proud of

yourselves for all your hard work.” • Be specific “You must have had fun

making your costumes!” • Be kind “Thank you for sharing all your

hard work with us!” • Let them know you were paying

attention “Your use of backward rhyming was very interesting!”

Page 94: 2010 Challenge E2 Side Trips Teams show off special talents Items not scored in Central Challenge May be a specific part of a scored element such as painting

2010 Challenge E 94

Sticky Notes• Appraisers must be careful to not write sticky notes

about items that are scored in the Challenge. • If the Central Challenge has “Teamwork” as a scored

element, or if a team asks the Appraisers to score their teamwork as a Side Trip, Appraisers should not write “Great teamwork!” or “I like how your team worked together!” as sticky note comments.

• In the same way, if the costumes are being scored in the Challenge, or if a team asks the Appraisers to score the costumes as a Side Trip, Appraisers must not write sticky notes that might lead the team to have unrealistic expectations about their score for costumes.

• This Appraiser is the first Tournament Official the team meets, usually just before the team’s Presentation. It is VERY important that the Prep Area Appraiser is able to set a team at ease.

• Prep Area Appraisers are the first safety inspectors. You should carefully look at the team's props and supplies for safety concerns or the possibility of anything causing floor damage. Check all other elements of the team’s props, set, and costumes for safety considerations and compliance with the Rules of the Road.

• Make sure all props and scenery fit inside the team supplied container.

• If the container is not already packed, have the team place all materials inside the container.

• If the team cannot fit all of the props and materials inside the container, remind the team that any prop and other material that cannot fit into the container may not be used in the Presentation (A.6.c.iii).

• It is up to the team to decide how to deal with this issue if it arises.

• Remind the team that after the container has been checked in the Prep Area, the team will move it, unopened, to the Launch Area. The team may open and unpack the container only after the eight-minute Presentation time begins.

• Measure the container to make sure that the size does not exceed the 30in x 24in x 48in (76.20cm x 60.96cm x 121.92cm) limit.

• If the container is not in compliance, allow the team to attempt to modify their container.

• However, remind the team that any modifications to the container or contents must occur before the Presentation begins, and that the Presentation may not be delayed while they attempt modifications.

• Once again it is up to the team to decide how to deal with this issue if it arises.

• Score item D.3.c for compliance (10 points) or non-compliance (0 points).

• Do NOT Touch the Structure: Let the team do it. • In the Prep Area, have a team member remove

the sealed envelope with the Structure Check-In Form and open the sealed container to verify that the Structure is theirs and intact.

• It is OK if the team removes their Structure from the container before the Presentation time begins.

• However, you should encourage the team to keep the Structure in their container until the Structure Testing begins.

• Check to see if the team has safety goggles. • If they have no goggles, ask the team to think of

ways they might solve this problem. • You may ask them to think about where they might

get goggles, BUT you cannot tell them where they could get them.

• Check with the team about which team members will be placing weights and make sure that those team members and the adult assistant are wearing closed-toed shoes.

• Explain the Pressure Board, Structure Tester Base, weights, and the weight placement process.

• Ask Elementary and Middle Level teams if they will be using an Adult Assistant to help move the weights.

• If so, explain the proper role of the Adult Assistant to the team and to the person the team will be using in this capacity.

• Point out the designated Adult Assistant Location in the Presentation Area. The Adult Assistant must also be wearing closed-toed shoes for safety. At this time the Adult Assistant is excused to take his/her place in the Adult Assistant Location in the Presentation Area.

Prep Area Appraiser(s)• Inform the team about any necessary facts

pertaining to the Presentation Site. • This includes telling the team about

– the layout of the site including site boundaries, – location of the Appraisers and Officials, – location of the electrical outlet, etc. – point out the Timekeeper/Announcer and any other

Appraiser or Official assigned a specific function. – Inform the Team Managers and any non-performing

team members where their designated seats are located,

– indicate where and to whom the Team Manager and the designated Team Rep should return after the Presentation to receive the team’s Raw Scores.

Prep Area Appraiser(s)• Be the advocate for the team! • The Prep Area Appraiser is, in many cases, the first

Appraiser or Official the team will encounter at the Tournament.

• The best Prep Area Appraisers take the attitude that they are the team’s ambassador to the rest of the Appraisers.

• The team will probably have many questions, everything from “How much time before we perform?” to “Are the Appraisers nice?”

• Expect the unexpected and understand that the most important part of the job is putting the team at ease and answering their questions.

portion of the floor and that the corners of the Structure Tester Base are returned to the same location within the marked area if it has moved.

• 2. Make sure that the weights and extension pipes (if being used) are placed on the mats as they were at the beginning of the Tournament. Place the Pressure Board near the Tester Base.

• 3. If the team uses an Adult Assistant, remind the Assistant to wait in his/her designated area until a team member indicates which desired weight he/she should help place. The Adult Assistant must return to the designated area after each weight placement.

• 4. Make sure the Safety Shields are in place and the area is free of debris, especially on the Tester Base.

Challenge Appraiser• 1. Observe the team’s Presentation, moving

around if necessary, in order to see all of the intended elements of the Presentation.

• 2. Appraise his/her assigned items using criteria listed on the Team Challenge score sheet. – Objective elements- it happened or did not happen,

objects hit certain areas of target, etc..– Subjective elements - require evaluation. Example: the

originality and innovation of an item. – All Side Trips are subjective. – Scoring rubrics have been developed to assist

Appraisers in the subjective evaluation of some types of scoring areas.

• 3. Go to the team and interact with them following the team’s Presentation in order to learn as much as they can about those elements of the team’s solution they are assigned to Appraise. – Ask questions and seek additional information in a positive and

friendly way. • 4. Write positive comments about the team’s

Presentation on ‘sticky’ notes provided at the work table. These comments, along with the team’s Raw Scores, will be passed on to the Team Representative and the Team Manager by the Head Appraiser.

• 5. Participate in decisions about any special awards (DaVinci, Renaissance, Spirit of DI) given to teams that presented at the site.

2010 Challenge E 114

Subjective Scores

• In the case of subjective assessments, it is critical that the Appraisers learn as much as possible about those elements of the team’s solution from team members following the Presentation.

• Appraisers must not discuss their evaluations with one another. This is to ensure that each Appraiser’s opinions are his or hers alone, free of the influence, perspectives, or persuasion of anyone else.

Page 115: 2010 Challenge E2 Side Trips Teams show off special talents Items not scored in Central Challenge May be a specific part of a scored element such as painting

2010 Challenge E 115

Subjective Scores

• Appraisers should evaluate similar elements consistently throughout the day. The rule of thumb is, “If something seems unusually creative in the morning, you must continue to appraise it the same way in the afternoon, even if you have seen many such items by that time.”

• Appraisers must not evaluate by comparing team to team, but rather they must award points based on where the team’s efforts are in terms of the Appraiser’s own internal criteria for that element.

• Appraisers should not be looking for what ISN’T there, but for what IS.

Page 116: 2010 Challenge E2 Side Trips Teams show off special talents Items not scored in Central Challenge May be a specific part of a scored element such as painting

Time Keeper/Announcer• Must keep accurate times according to the

specifications in the Team Challenges. • Attempt to keep the Appraisal Team on schedule

by giving them periodic updates on how closely they are keeping to the posted schedule.

• Understand the time limitations of the Challenge• Able to focus on keeping time without being

distracted by the entertaining aspects of the Presentation,

• Comfortable using a stopwatch, countdown timer or other timing device.

Page 117: 2010 Challenge E2 Side Trips Teams show off special talents Items not scored in Central Challenge May be a specific part of a scored element such as painting

2010 Challenge E 117

Time Keeper/Announcer• upbeat, enthusiastic, and personable;• is comfortable speaking in front of an audience; • has a loud, clear voice that carries across large spaces if

there is no microphone; • is able to maintain energy and enthusiasm throughout the

Tournament day; • understands that the last team of the day deserves the

same attention as the team that presented first; • is entertaining but never forgets that it is the TEAMS – not

the Announcer – that should be the center of the audience’s attention!

Page 118: 2010 Challenge E2 Side Trips Teams show off special talents Items not scored in Central Challenge May be a specific part of a scored element such as painting

2010 Challenge E 118

Time Keeper/Announcer• Must be careful to use the same general introduction for all

teams. • Must introduce the Team Manager(s) and any non-

performing team members to the audience prior to the Presentation.

• Should ask all members of the team to take a bow at the conclusion of the Presentation.

• Should set the tone for the Presentation with his/her enthusiasm and personality.

• May amuse the audience in between Presentations, but regardless of innate talent, should NEVER be so captivating as to overshadow the teams. The Announcer must remember that it is our TEAMS that do the entertaining, not our Announcers.

understand a procedure, a scoring category, or the legibility of an Appraiser’s handwriting or numbers;

• If a computer is used to enter scores at the Presentation Site, must be comfortable working with computers and with the Scoring Program.
