Personal style and preference

aren’t the only things that dictate

certain wedding day decisions.

In fact, a host of style guidelines

exist to help brides and grooms

make the right choices on their

big day.

For example, while a man might

have a specific tuxedo style in

mind for his wedding day, some-

thing such as the time of the cer-

emony can dictate which styles

are appropriate. A morning cer-

emony, for instance, typically

calls for a cutaway, or morning

coat, with the ushers in match-

ing strollers. For early afternoon

ceremonies, however, it’s typical

for men in the wedding party to

wear tuxedos without tails.

Grooms who really want to

wear tails should only do so for

ceremonies that begin after 4

p.m., as tails are considered too

formal for ceremonies beginning

earlier in the day.

Did you know?

You have announced your

engagement.

What’s next? Sometimes the

couple will have an engagment

party hosted by family mem-

bers.

Then, customarily there are

bridal showers given for the

bride-elect and sometimes

Honey-do showers for the

bride-elect and groom-elect.

All of the above are custom

and routine.

But what to buy as a wedding

gift for the couple?

That is when the couple usu-

ally chooses a registry at their

chosen stores. This is custom-

arily done before all showers.

What’s a registry and why

choose one? A registry is a

selection of preferred items

that the engaged couple has

chosen as wedding gifts.

The registry includes a listing

of houseware, dishes, china,

flatware, bedding, kitchen and

bath items, etc. selected by the

couple.

A registry also makes an eas-

ier and convenient method for

wedding guests to select a gift

chosen by the couple.

Many couples choose in-town

businesses and out-of-town

stores to shop for their regis-

tries.

There’s the ever-popular Wal-

Mart, which offers the couple a

wide selection of gift items.

Wal-Mart offers on-line wed-

ding registries.

Many couples choose Target,

Bed Bath & Beyond, and other

popular stores in the area.

Eunice offers registries at

Bellard’s Family Pharmacy,

Augie’s Maple Avenue

Pharmacy & Gifts, Cinderella’s

Cottage and Petals & Pots.

Some of Eunice’s registries

offer the couple many choices

of houseware, fine china, flat-

ware and crystal, photo frames

and albums, silver, and much

more for the couple’s first

home.

Bellard’s Family Pharmacy

and Gifts offers the bride-elect

a registry which is located in

the bridal department of the

store.

The honoree chooses a selec-

tion of bridal gifts which may

include wedding frames, guest

book and other wedding acces-

sories. The bride-elect also can

select miscellaneous items in

the store. A book is marked

A registry at Augie’s Maple Avenue Pharmacy

Did you Know?According to the United States

Census Bureau (USCB), more than 2 million couples get mar-ried each year in the United States.

The average bride is a shade over 25 years of age, while the average groom is nearly 27-years-old. In a nod to the changing nature of society, one-third of those getting married each year have been married before. That’s especially notable to those who make a living pro-viding wedding services, be it reception halls, videographers, photographers, or others who make their living in the wed-ding industry. That’s because the average wedding budget is roughly $20,000, meaning weddings, even for brides and grooms who have been down the aisle before, remain a costly expense for the participants and a lucrative venture for those in the industry.

In fact, $72 billion is spent on weddings each year. To put that in better perspective, consider that only $8 billion per year is spent on honeymoons, meaning brides and grooms are liable to spend nine times more on their wedding than they are on their honeymoon.

Nick and Lynn Pavich of Eunice have been married for 40 years.

Louis Nicola Pavich, Jr. and Lora Lynn Richard met

in 1966 at the old Lafayette Charity Hospital where Nick was a student in Radiology Technologist training and Lynn was a nurse in training

from T.H. Harris Vocational Technical in Opelousas.

The couple socialized during work. “While in training at the hospital all students became friends and were always eager to start conversations and socialize. Nursing students would help transport patients off wards to diagnostic areas such as x-ray department. So while waiting for film to pro-cess we visited,”Lynn said.

They continued to visit with each other and dated for three

years.Their first date included tak-

ing in a movie at the Nona Theater and then supper at Burger Chef. They ate ham-burgers, fries and drank a coke, all were 15¢ each. “Money was tight since we were both stu-dents, so we certainly couldn’t afford to eat in a restaurant,” Lynn said.

Nick proposed at Lynn’s home in Church Point. “He asked my parents’ permission in front of my 10 brothers and sisters.

This really almost scared him off! He was very nervous. He had bought my ring while sta-tioned at Fort Polk. He gave it to me just before he left for Vietnam. While he was in Vietnam, I planned the whole wedding in detail and com-municated with Nick by mail. We counted the days until he came home by ‘x-ing’ out the days on the calendar. We only spoke once by phone during

Patience is the key to 70 years of marriage

Philip and Minnie Doucet Carrier of Church Point have been married for 70 years, and Minnie says it took patience to keep their marriage alive.

Philip, 88, and his wife Min-nie, 89, have five children. They are Irvin and wife Gloria Car-

rier, Ronald and wife Patty Carrier, Lurlin and wife Diane Carrier, Keith and wife Becky Carrier and Joyce Joubert and husband Kenneth, all of Church Point. The couple has 13 grand-children, 20 great-grandchil-dren and 7 great-great-grand-

children. The couple met each other as

neighbors. Philip said, “We were raised

as neighbors and met at house dances. We courted about two years before we married.”

The couple married on April 9, 1939 at Our Lady of Sacred Heart Church in Church Point.

“It was on Easter Sunday back then. Father C.A. Bienvenu married us. Our witnesses were Emile Fontenot, Ruth Sattler Cormier and Wille Benoit,” said Philip.

Philip retired as a janitor from the Acadia Parish School Board after working for 21 years. Min-nie retired in housekeeping from the Acadia St. Landry Hospital.

The couple both still live at home. Philip still drives. “What one can no longer do the other partner helps out,” Philip says.

Their hobbies were garden-ing and Minnie used to love to bake.

his tour in Vietnam. He had only five minutes to talk since there were many more soldiers behind him to make their five-minute phone calls.”

The couple married on Nov. 22, 1969 at Our Lady of Sacred Heart Church in Church Point with Fr. Wilson Matt offici-ating. Their wedding party included Elizabeth Richard, Louise Richard, Judy Hilburn, Archie Comeaux, Russell Pavich, Billy Braud, flower girl Denise Richard and ring bear-er Gary Comeaux.

They took a honeymoon trip to Houston for a few days trav-eling in a 1966 Ford Mustang. “We did not have much money

to spare since Nick had just returned from Vietnam and was discharged from the Army just two weeks prior to our wedding,” said Lynn.

The couple have four chil-dren; Stefan Pavich, Lora Pierce, Monica Pavich and Nico Pavich, and five grand-children, Bryce Pavich, Jailyn Pavich, Ethan Pavich, Reece Pavich and Molly Pierce.

Nick retired from Moosa Memorial Hospital in 1999 with 25 years of service. Lynn retired from Moosa Memorial in 2005.

Nick had worked as a phar-macist for 37 years and is cur-rently working part-time at Picou’s Drug Store. Lynn has worked as a nurse for 10 years as an LPN and 34 years as an RN. She is presently employed

at Intrepid Home Health work-ing part-time.

The couple’s hobbies include attending concerts and taking short get-away weekend trips. They also enjoy trying out new restaurants and having family gatherings with their children and grandchildren.

Sarah Summerlin and Ian Oliver met in passing nine years ago. They formally met each other during a mutual friend’s wedding in December of 2006. Summerlin was helping out as a wedding coordinator since the actual coordinator had missed a flight. Ian was an usher.

After sharing a few two-steps at the reception, plans were made for a group to celebrate New Year’s together. Soon after-wards a friendship began.

The couple officially began dat-ing after Mardi Gras in 2007.

The couple’s time of dating mingled in with Ian’s return

to school to pursue a career in nursing. Despite Ian’s busy study schedule, the couple made it a high priority to enjoy life.

Gathering with friends and dancing to Cajun music is very much part of who the couple are.

Sarah recalls that it had been awhile since they were able to get out to hear some of their favorite bands, so they impro-vised, turning her kitchen floor into the next-best dance hall in town.

After dating almost two years, Ian made it official by propos-ing just before Christmas. Part of his engagement surprise was he had booked the church on a date the couple had mentioned in passing some months prior. Knowing May weddings were tough to book, he reserved the date in advance.

The couple married on May 23, 2009 at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church. A reception followed at the Point-Aux-Loups Springs Ballroom in Iota.

The bride wore her mother’s wedding gown which had been partially redesigned, honoring their love of family and tradi-tion.

Summerlin is the daughter of Harry and Jean Summerlin

and is employed at St. Edmund High School as a Religion Administrator and teacher. She is a 1994 graduate of St. Edmund High and received a B.A. in Theology from Madonna University in Michigan.

Oliver is the son of Ronald and Deborah Oliver and is a 1997 graduate of Eunice High School. He attended T.H. Harris where he earned a degree in Information Technology. He con-tinued his education graduating

from LSUE School of Nursing. Ian is employed at Opelousas General as an RN in the emer-gency room.

Months into their marriage they both feel blessed by many of the joys of married life, from daily life, to the gift of their first born son on his way, as the couple is expecting in late March.

Wedding rings are a tradi-tion that date back to ancient times.

The ancient Egyptians were the first people known to take their symbol for eternity, the circle, and use it to signify the marriage union.

They placed a ring on the third finger of the left hand (a tradition we still have today) because they believe that the “vein of love” ran directly from

this finger to the heart. These ancient rings were

made of everything from leath-er to bone to metal.

Gold wedding bands-probably the most popular type of wed-ding ring in the world today-were once a sign of great pros-perity. Wedding rings were also once used as part of a groom’s bride payment in arranged mar-riages, and showed the groom’s noble intentions.

The plain wedding band sup-posedly became popular when Queen Mary I of England mar-ried King Phillip II of Spain in 1554.

Did you know?Weddings are rich in tradi-

tions. Oftentimes these tradi-tions are handed down through the years from ancient times. Here are explanations of a few:

* The tradition of brides-maids dressing the same as

each other and in similar style to the bride comes from the old belief that evil spirits cast hexes on the bride. Dressing the same made it more difficult for the spirits to distinguish the bride.

* According to English folk-

lore, Saturday, a popular wed-ding day, is the unluckiest day to marry.

* The veil dates back to ancient Rome, when it was flame-yellow, worn over the face and called a flammeum.
