Lake Erie Bus Terminal b Amtrak Peace Bridge Look Dismount as Posted Stop, dismount and walk across roadways or other posted locations. When crossing perpenticular to the flow of traffic, cross only when it is safe to do so. Always Wear a Properly Fitted Helmet * All bicyclists, scooters and in-line skaters under the age of 14 are required by law to wear an approved bicycle helmet when they are operators or passengers on bicycles and while skating. Any parent or guardian whose child violates this law is subject to a fine of up to $50. It is the duty of every person operating a bicycle within an Erie County Park to wear a protective safety helmet. Earphones are Dangerous * Using earphones while bicycling (or skating) on a public right-of-way (street or sidewalk) is illegal. If you use earphones on a trail, keep the volume sufficiently low to hear other pathway users. From the Governor's Traffic Safety Committee: New York State law requires motorists to change lanes to pass cyclists and in-line skaters. Signal to Others Cyclists: when approaching others, sound your bell or call out a warning, then pass safely on the left. Pedestrians: move to the right when someone is overtaking. Skaters Use Caution In-line skaters: know how to use your equipment safely. Follow travel, passing, and speed rules as per bicyclists. Do not perform trick skating maneuvers on trails. Be Visible Ensure your visibility at night by wearing light-colored clothing with reflective material. Outfit your bicycle with lights as you would for riding on the roads. On-Street Bicycling Share the Road Keep to the Right All trail users should keep to the right except when passing or turning left. Move off the trail to the right when stopping. Never block a trail. Be Alert Watch for hazardous con- ditions, such as poor pave- ment, fallen tree branches and other debris. Beware of slippery conditions caused by water, ice, loose gravel or sand. Be Careful at Crossings Look both ways. Cyclists: yield to through traffic at intersections, pedestrians have the right of way. Pedestrians: exercise caution. Be aware of stopping limitations of bicyclists and skaters. Stay on the Trail Keep on designated trails to protect parks, natural areas and yourself. Riding off the trail is dangerous. Multi-Use Trails Share the Trail Regardless of age or ability, everyone should wear a properly fitted helmet certified by the Snell Memorial Foundation or the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) (look for the approval sticker on the inside of the helmet shell). Helmets significantly reduce the risk of sustaining a serious head injury in the event of a crash. A helmet should fit squarely on the top of the head in a level position and cover the top of the forehead extending down to about one inch above the eyebrows. The helmet should not be able to slide back and forth or rock from side to side. Although bicycles have equal right to the road, be prepared to maneuver for safety. Use Appropriate Lane Avoid being in a right turn-only lane if you want to go straight through an intersection. Move into the through lane early. In narrow lanes or slow traffic it may be safer to take the whole lane. YES NO Never Ride Against Traffic * Motorist are not looking for bicyclists riding on the wrong side of the street. Ride with traffic to avoid accidents. YES NO Obey All Traffic Signs and Signals* Bicyclists must obey all local and state Traffic Rules. Bicyclists have the same rights, privileges and duties as other vehicles. Bicycles must be driven like other vehicles if they are to be taken seriously by motorists. STOP Ride in a Straight Line Avoid dodging between parked cars. Ride in a straight line at least three feet away from parked cars. Watch for a car pulling out of an parking space. NO YES Turning Left-2 Options 1. As A VEHICLE: Signal your intentions in advance. Move to the left turning lane, and complete the turn when it is safe. 2. AS A PEDESTRIAN: Ride to the far crosswalk, dismount & walk across. 1 2 PEDESTRIAN VEHICLE Use Hand Signals * Signal all turns and stops ahead of time. Look over your shoulder for any traffic, then make your intended move only when it is safe to do so. STOP RIGHT LEFT OR Lock Your Bike Buy the best lock system you can afford: none is as expensive as a new bike. Lock the frame and rear wheel to a fixed object. If you have a quick release, lock the front wheel also. Use Lights at Night * Always use a strong light colored headlight & a red taillight at night or when visibility is poor. Use bike reflectors and reflective clothing. See and be seen! Be Careful at Intersections The majority of accidents happen at intersections. Proceed with care. Vehicles making turns are particularly dangerous. The Greater Buffalo-Niagara Regional Transportation Council (GBNRTC), has prepared this Bicycle Route Guide to assist those bicycling in the Buffalo- Niagara Falls area. This Guide contains the basic information all bicyclists need to know in order to properly and safely ride their bikes. The map was developed to encourage more people to bicycle by rating the comfort and quality of many roads in the urban, suburban and rural areas of this region. The Route Guide map uses the region's street and bikepath network to produce a continuous bicycle route system. Most of the on-road selections are those preferred by local bike clubs for their own rides. Several popular attractions have been indicated on the maps, both as points of interest, and as visual landmarks when traveling throughout the region. This Guide also presents an overview of a bicyclist's legal responsibilities, and some general equipment issues and riding tips to consider before you ride. Please acquaint yourself with the sections covering "On-Street" and "Multi-Use Trails". Make your bicycle trip safe and as enjoyable as possible by knowing your responsibilities and privileges. Please Read Be aware that the GBNRTC and those involved with the production of this Guide do not guarantee the safety of the routes indicated on these maps for use by bicyclists. The on-street routes are part of the region's adopted Bicycle Master Plan and have been color-coded to represent how comfortable a typical bicyclist would feel riding along a particular stretch of roadway. These routes were not ride-tested by the GBNRTC. Bicyclists may very well encounter such problems as drainage grates, potholes, loose gravel, and on some roads, even heavy traffic flows. Like all roads users, bicyclists must remain alert to hazardous conditions. continued next panel The Greater Buffalo-Niagara Bicycle Route Guide Beware of Car Doors Be wary of parked cars. Motorists can unexpectedly open doors. Be particularly careful if you see a motorist in the car. Ride a car's door width away. Make Eye Contact Confirm that you are seen. Establish eye contact with motorists to insure that they know you are on the roadway. Please Read continued All on-street routings are regular roads used daily by drivers of motor vehicles. Bicyclists must assess their own riding skills to determine if they possess sufficient ability to adapt to changing traffic patterns and road conditions. These are all variables that control the degree of risk associated with bicycling. Bicyclists must assume the responsibility for their own safety when using the routes indicated on these maps. The Benefits of Cycling Bicycling is a viable form of transportation that can be used for commuting to work or school, running errands, and for recreation. Bicycling improves physical health and can give a sense of independence and freedom. Bicycling enhances our ability to experience and interact with the vibrancy of our neighbor- hoods, villages and towns, something which is very difficult when inside a car. Bicycling is economically efficient, saving the commuter bicyclist on an annual basis approximately three-quarters the cost of driving. Bicycling is a renewable, non-polluting form of transportation. Bicycling reduces the consumption of fossil fuels, alleviates traffic congestion, and improves the region's air quality. The Greater Buffalo-Niagara Regional TransportationCouncil (GBNRTC), has prepared this BicycleRoute Guide to assist those bicycling in the Buffalo-Niagara Falls area. This Guide contains the basicinformation all bicyclists need to know in order to properly and safely ride their bikes. The map was developed to encourage more people to bicycle byrating the comfort and quality of many roads in the urban, suburban and rural areas of this region.

The Route Guide map uses the region's street andbikepath network to produce a continuous bicycleroute system. Most of the on-road selections are thosepreferred by local bike clubs for their own rides. Several popular attractions have been indicated onthe maps, both as points of interest, and as visual landmarks when traveling throughout the region.

This Guide also presents an overview of a bicyclist'slegal responsibilities, and some general equipmentissues and riding tips to consider before you ride. Please acquaint yourself with the sections covering"On-Street" and "Multi-Use Trails". Make your bicycletrip safe and as enjoyable as possible by knowingyour responsibilities and privileges.

Please Read

Be aware that the GBNRTC and those involved withthe production of this Guide do not guarantee thesafety of the routes indicated on these maps for useby bicyclists. The on-street routes are part of theregion's adopted Bicycle Master Plan and have beencolor-coded to represent how comfortable a typicalbicyclist would feel riding along a particular stretchof roadway. These routes were not ride-tested by the GBNRTC. Bicyclists may very well encounter such problems as drainage grates, potholes, loose gravel, and on some roads, even heavy traffic flows. Likeall roads users, bicyclists must remain alert tohazardous conditions. continued next panel

The Greater Buffalo-NiagaraBicycle Route Guide

Beware of Car DoorsBe wary of parked cars.Motorists can unexpectedly open doors. Be particularly careful if you see a motoristin the car. Ride a car's doorwidth away.

Make Eye ContactConfirm that you are seen.Establish eye contact withmotorists to insure that they know you are on the roadway.

Please Read continued

All on-street routings are regular roads used daily bydrivers of motor vehicles. Bicyclists must assess theirown riding skills to determine if they possess sufficientability to adapt to changing traffic patterns and road conditions. These are all variables that control the degree of risk associated with bicycling. Bicyclists must assume the responsibility for their own safety when using the routes indicated on these maps.

The Benefits of Cycling Bicycling is a viable form of transportation thatcan be used for commuting to work or school, running errands, and for recreation.

Bicycling improves physical health and can give a sense of independence and freedom.

Bicycling enhances our ability to experience and interact with the vibrancy of our neighbor-hoods, villages and towns, something which is verydifficult when inside a car.

Bicycling is economically efficient, saving the commuter bicyclist on an annual basis approximately three-quarters the cost of driving.

Bicycling is a renewable, non-polluting formof transportation. Bicycling reduces the consumption of fossil fuels, alleviates traffic congestion, and improves the region's air quality.
