The Greater Buffalo-Niagara Regional TransportationCouncil (GBNRTC), has prepared this BicycleRoute Guide to assist those bicycling in the Buffalo-Niagara Falls area. This Guide contains the basicinformation all bicyclists need to know in order to properly and safely ride their bikes. The map was developed to encourage more people to bicycle byrating the comfort and quality of many roads in the urban, suburban and rural areas of this region.
The Route Guide map uses the region's street andbikepath network to produce a continuous bicycleroute system. Most of the on-road selections are thosepreferred by local bike clubs for their own rides. Several popular attractions have been indicated onthe maps, both as points of interest, and as visual landmarks when traveling throughout the region.
This Guide also presents an overview of a bicyclist'slegal responsibilities, and some general equipmentissues and riding tips to consider before you ride. Please acquaint yourself with the sections covering"On-Street" and "Multi-Use Trails". Make your bicycletrip safe and as enjoyable as possible by knowingyour responsibilities and privileges.
Please Read
Be aware that the GBNRTC and those involved withthe production of this Guide do not guarantee thesafety of the routes indicated on these maps for useby bicyclists. The on-street routes are part of theregion's adopted Bicycle Master Plan and have beencolor-coded to represent how comfortable a typicalbicyclist would feel riding along a particular stretchof roadway. These routes were not ride-tested by the GBNRTC. Bicyclists may very well encounter such problems as drainage grates, potholes, loose gravel, and on some roads, even heavy traffic flows. Likeall roads users, bicyclists must remain alert tohazardous conditions. continued next panel
The Greater Buffalo-NiagaraBicycle Route Guide
Beware of Car DoorsBe wary of parked cars.Motorists can unexpectedly open doors. Be particularly careful if you see a motoristin the car. Ride a car's doorwidth away.
Make Eye ContactConfirm that you are seen.Establish eye contact withmotorists to insure that they know you are on the roadway.
Please Read continued
All on-street routings are regular roads used daily bydrivers of motor vehicles. Bicyclists must assess theirown riding skills to determine if they possess sufficientability to adapt to changing traffic patterns and road conditions. These are all variables that control the degree of risk associated with bicycling. Bicyclists must assume the responsibility for their own safety when using the routes indicated on these maps.
The Benefits of Cycling Bicycling is a viable form of transportation thatcan be used for commuting to work or school, running errands, and for recreation.
Bicycling improves physical health and can give a sense of independence and freedom.
Bicycling enhances our ability to experience and interact with the vibrancy of our neighbor-hoods, villages and towns, something which is verydifficult when inside a car.
Bicycling is economically efficient, saving the commuter bicyclist on an annual basis approximately three-quarters the cost of driving.
Bicycling is a renewable, non-polluting formof transportation. Bicycling reduces the consumption of fossil fuels, alleviates traffic congestion, and improves the region's air quality.
