Students gain a firm graspof the historical, societal and other forces that shape a discipline suchas management or international studies. Meanwhile, course projects, internships, and service-learning assignments enable students to testbusiness principles and concepts in corporate and nonprofit settings.Bentley professors link theory and practice not only in teaching but intheir own research. The topics they investigate are rooted in thecomplex challenges that leading companies face every day.

S E A S O N P R E V I E WFalcons Looking to Get Back to Postseason After Two-Year Absence

The Bentley University women’s soccer teamwill be one of the youngest team’s in the Northeast-10 Conference in 2010. The Falcons will featurejust four upper classmen, senior goalies MirandaCharles and Kara Smith, and juniors CourtneyGallagher and Amy Wagner, all of whom willserve as captains. With such a young roster, Bentleywill be heavily reliant on that quartet to help carrythe team and provide on-field leadership.

Eighth-year head coach Lauren Lukis will becounting on her 18 freshmen and sophomores tonot only contribute quickly, but to also the lay thefoundation for the future. The sophomore classshould be up to the challenge. Of the eightreturning sophomores, five were regular starterslast season.

If the team’s young players can play up to theirabilities and combine with the talents andleadership of the upper classmen, Bentley will bein good position to make its first postseason tripsince 2007 this season.

FORWARDSThe loss of Cheryl Boyd to graduation will leave a sizeable hole in

the Bentley attack. Boyd was a three-time All-Conference selectionand graduated as the fourth all-time leading scorer in program historywith 25 goals and 10 assists.

One player who may be up to the challenge of replacing Boyd’sproduction is sophomore Laura Muise. The diminutive Muise, whostands just 5-2, exploded onto the scene in 2009 with four goals, goodfor second on the team.

Muise will be joined up front primarily by sophomores MollyAlfieri and Laura Garlo and freshman Sydney Spiegel. Garlo was

one of the freshmen that sawextensive playing time lastseason, starting 16 matches.Alfieri appeared in sevenmatches as a freshman andSpiegel is a two-time All-Conference selection inhigh school from SouthEaston, Mass. Wagner will see time atboth forward and in themidfield, but regardless ofwhere she lines up, she is adangerous player. She’s beenone of the Falcons’ leadingscorers in each of her firsttwo seasons.

MIDFIELD Bentley lost two stalwarts

in the midfield to graduation in Leah Leavitt and Hayley Traeger.Sophomore Julie Pomponi is a holdover from 2009 who started 13matches.

Several new faces will be competing for startsin the midfield. Sophomore Amy Margolius, atransfer from the University of Richmond, is oneplayer to keep an eye on. Freshmen PattyMcAllister and Katie Moroney are two otherplayers who will have a chance to crack the startinglineup. McAllister is a former All-State selectionfrom Connecticut, while Moroney is a talentedathlete who has the potential to contributeimmediately.

BACKS The backs are anchored by Gallagher, who hasstarted 29 matches in her two years at Bentley.Lukis won’t have to worry about breaking in toomany new players at this position, as two returnees, sophomores Deirdre Leary and WhitneyRogers, saw extensive playing time last season.Leary started all 17 matches and Rogers started allbut one.

Sophomore Maddie Knapp and freshmen Casey Neary andKelsey Regan will also compete for playing time.

GOALKEEPERSSmith has been a rock for Lukis in goal over the past three seasons.

She has been the starter since stepping foot on campus, starting 50 ofa possible 56 matches in that span. Last season she was third in the NE-10 in saves per game at 6.25.With such a young backline infront of her, Smith’s leadershipskil ls will be even moreimportant in 2010. Charles isher very capable backup, ableto step in at any time.

SCHEDULEThe NE-10 will once

again provide severalchallenging matches forBentley, as four teams from theconference advanced to theNCAA Tournament lastseason; Saint Rose, FranklinPierce, Merrimack and UMass-Lowell.

The Falcons open theirschedule at home against oneof those teams, UMass-Lowell on Sept. 7. Bentley also hosts FranklinPierce on Sept. 21. They will have to travel to Merrimack and SaintRose this season, on Sept. 25 and Oct. 8 respectively.

The schedule closes on Oct. 27 at Southern New Hampshire, andthe NE-10 Tournament begins on Oct. 31 with the top-eight teamsqualifying and the winner earning an automatic bid to the NCAATournament.

Bentley will be looking for its firstplayoff birth since 2007 this season.
