There are some holes that DeFelice willhave to fill with the losses including startingpitchers Jarrod Marchesi, Brett Fistes and ChrisDupay, along with first baseman Garrett Stenhouse. The three pitchers mentioned gave Bentley 47career victories and Stenhouse was a three-yearstarter at first who earned All-Conference honorsin 2008.

The returning All-Northeast-10 playersfor Bentley are outfielders James Roche(Arlington, Mass.) and Brett Damato(Commack, N.Y.), second baseman CharliePagliarulo (Medford, Mass.) and right-handedpitcher Rob Finneran (Garden City, N.Y.).Roche was a member of the first team, and theother three were chosen by the conferencecoaches for the second team.

While there is experience on the roster,it is still a young club overall with the 30-manroster including 10 freshmen and ninesophomores. Off the 15 pitchers on the roster, only six have previously pitched for the Falcons.

Once again, DeFelice has put together adifficult schedule, one that includes 49 games. Thefirst 17 are scheduled to be played during twotrips to Florida, 10 of which will be against SunshineState Conference opponents, and 26 of the 33

games up north will be Northeast-10 Conference games. The first Florida trip will begin with a four-game series at Rollins

College Feb. 13-16 and the northern portion of the schedule is due tocommence Mar. 16 against Saint Anselm.

Taking a look atthe 2010 Falcons byposition:

PITCHERS

Entering lastseason, neitherFinneran or DanMurphy (GardenCity, N.Y.) had throwna pitch as a collegian. But by the time theseason ended, the duohad combined to win12 of 14 decisions withFinneran capturingsecond-team All-Northeast-10 honorsand Murphy beingnamed a member of theconference’s All-RookieTeam.

Finneran, ajunior right-hander, iscoming off a 7-2 year.He showed the abilityto go deep into games(averaging seven inningsper start), had astrikeout-walk ratio of better than 4-to-1, and gave up one run or lessin five of his last eight starts. Murphy, in his freshman year, led the teamin ERA at 2.81, held opposing hitters to a .247 average and had anunblemished record, winning all five of his decisions.

Coming off a school record 28 wins in 2009,this year’s Bentley University baseball team willfeature a core group of proven veterans, includingfour who have resumes that include All-Northeast-10 Conference recognition, along with a number ofpromising newcomers.

Bob DeFelice, the dean of Division II headcoaches nationwide, and his coaching staff arecounting on the mix of experience and youth tocontinue the success his team experienced lastspring. The 2009 Falcons finished at 28-22 overall, placed fourth in the very competitive Northeast-10, and had a .650 winning percentage in gamesagainst East Region opposition, winning 26 of 40contests.

DeFelice, now in his 42nd year as the onlyhead baseball coach in the university’s history, willbe able to pencil in close to the same starting lineupas a year ago if he chooses. Eight players who startedat least 40 of Bentley’s 50 games last spring are back, and the returning pitchers include the twowinningest hurlers on the staff.

All told, the 18 returnees from last year’sclub accounted for about 85 percent of the runsscored, 79 percent of the RBI and 88 percent ofthe hits. Off the mound, the pitchers back this seasonteamed for a 19-10 record and a 3.12 ERA in 271innings of work.

The double-play tandem of Pagliarulo and Eruzionestarted every game for the 2009 Falcons, and Curley was in the lineupin 49 of 50 games.

Pagliarulo had a quality junior year, one that culminated withhim sporting the team’s best batting average (.330) and earning second-team All-Conference honors. He reached base 94 times via hit, walk orbeing hit by a pitch, and led the team in RBI (38).

Curley has started 89 games at third over his first twocollegiate seasons and is coming of a sophomore campaign in which heswung the bat at a .271 clip and made only three errors over the final18 games. In contention for thefirst base job are junior ChrisHardy (Warwick, R.I.) andfreshman Lamarre Rey (Lynn,Mass.). Hardy, primarily used asthe team’s DH in 2009, has playedonly three games at first duringhis first two seasons. Rey cameto Bentley from the PingreeSchool where he was a BostonGlobe All-Scholastic as a spring.

Providing infield depth, with the ability to play at any ofthe four positions, is senior JasonCusumano (Port Chester,N.Y.). His best season to datecame in 2008 when he hit .260with 15 RBI and 13 runs scored.

OUTFIELD

DeFelice’s usualoutfield last season consisted ofMark Lane (Tyngsboro,Mass.) in left, Damato in centerand Roche in right. Damato hasstarted 109 of the Falcons’ last110 games, Roche has twice earned All-Northeast-10 honors and Laneis coming off a solid freshman season.

Roche has had two quality seasons for Bentley, earning NE-10 Freshman of the Year honors in 2008 and first-team All-Conferenceaccolades last spring. He hit .320 with 10 home runs (the most by aFalcon since the conference moved to wood bats in 2030) and 36 RBIas a sophomore and enters this season with career numbers thatinclude a .331 average, 17 HR and 68 RBI.

Damato hit a career best .272 in 2009 with his 50 hitsincluding 10 doubles, a triple and nine home runs. In addition to beingable to provide power at the plate, he is a threat on the bases (14 stealslast season) and will enter this season with a string of 72 consecutivegames without an error.

Lane batted .270 during his freshman season, with 15 RBIand 14 runs scored. He pitched four times early in the season but bymid-March, had established himself as a full-time outfielder.

Hardy, if not at first, will also be available for time in the outfieldor as the designated hitter. He’s averaged 40 starts a season over hisfirst two seasons and sports a .263 career batting average.
