Antonio Mro: Songs of the Hill
Antonio Mro is one of the most important and renowned artists
of Peru. I have the honour of being his personal friend for over
25 years and as Ambassador of Peru I am very proud to have the
opportunity to present in this European summer event Songs of the Hill
a selection of his paintings and sculptures which constitute an outstanding
sample of his work through the years.
Antonio Mros life, completely dedicated to the world of art, began ina small town called Catacaos, located in the desertic cost of northern
Peru where his father was the only medical doctor. The hills from
where the songs come carried by Antonios paintings and sculptures are
undoubtedly those tender sandy slopes that surround Catacaos and the
fresh aroma of the Tamarindo trees that provide shelter from the brilliant
sun that illuminates his works. The neo-expressionst abstraction style
of Antonio Mro is part of the modern European art but could not be
properly understood without the legacy of his Peruvian cultural and artisticheritage.
Moreover, throughout the work of Antonio Mro we can appreciate his
willingness to represent all shades of culture which reflect his devotion
to capture what is the different. As Antonio has stated differences must
not just be tolerated but should be seen as a vital stimulus, and as such
should be incorporated consciously just like in culture. This vision is one
of the most relevant contributions of the work of Antonio Mro to thecontemporary world art.
Songs of the Hills will be exhibited from July 31 until August 22 in the
Mesdagzaal, the most beautiful gallery of the renowned Pulchri Studio in
the Lange Voorhout, the very heart of the City of The Hague.
Pulchri Studio, for more than a half century, has been a special location
to exhibit a wide variety of works of arts and prominent foreign artists as
master Antonio Mro.

It is very special for the Embassy of Peru to present the most representative
works of Antonio Mro in such a magnificent location as part of the cultural
activities in commemoration of the 189th Anniversary of the Independenceof Peru. Our most sincere thanks to the Pulchri Studio for allowing us this
wonderful opportunity as a way to improve the cultural relations between
Peru and the Netherlands.

Antonio Mro in Pulchri Studio:
Pulchri Studio is located at Lange Voorhout in The Hague, the
grand avenue that used to be an important place for strolling
and recreation for the nobility of The Hague throughout the
ages, especially after emperor Charles V of Habsburg had linden
trees planted there.
Not surprisingly Lange Voorhout and the surrounding area in previous
centuries were defined as illustrious. The avenues character has hardly
changed over the ages.
The building of Pulchri Studio -at 15 Lange Voorhout- with its outstanding
faade standing back from the street- has served for ages as a prestigious
venue for people holding high government positions; the well-to-do and
nobility to meet.
For over one and a half century now it offers exhibition and working space
and reception facilities for approx. four hundred and fifty artists from The
Hague or from elsewhere in the Netherlands or abroad.

In 1897 the building was acquired for the benefit of the Society of Painters
-Pulchri Studio - by their Chairman, H. W. Mesdag, renowned painter of
a large panorama and many seascapes.
He had exhibition capacity added to the premises which is still considered
among Europes best.
Pulchri Studio consists of various galleries, halls, corridors and staircases.
The building where exhibition halls and galleries are opened to the public
free of charge reflects a history of four centuries of building and rebuilding
in the styles of said eras.
Annually about sixty-five exhibitions are being held. Visitors will find a
wide variety of works of art on show and in most cases for sale, mainly
contemporary but sometimes also paintings and sculptures originating
from the societys rich past or prominent foreign artists.
One of those artists is Antonio Mro, whose works of art are exhibited in
Pulchri from July 31 till August 22.
Pulchri Studio is pleased to have the opportunity to show the oeuvre of
this important Peruvian artist in the Mesdagzaal, our most beautiful gallery
in the building.
We sincerely hope this exhibition will lead to more international
cooperation and will attract many Spanish and Latin-American art-lovers
to the Lange Voorhout and Pulchri Studio.
They will not be disappointed!
