The Night Ministry was created out of diverse religious traditions to build relationships with vulnerable youth and adults on the nighttime streets. Today, we build relationships in a variety of settings. Through these relationships and the provision of housing, health, spiritual, and social services, we seek to empower people of all ages to meet their own needs. Recognizing the uniqueness, dignity, and value of each person, we accept individuals as they are, in an affirming and compassionate manner. We call the larger community to the same mission.

Throughout Fiscal Year

2010, with the help of

supporters like you at our

side, The Night Ministry

continued our mission of

building relationships with

vulnerable adults and youth

on the streets and in our

shelters.

The involvement of our

friends, in all of the ways they

partner with us, truly has an

impact on those whom we

serve. These partnerships

and this work positively

impact the lives of thousands

of people in our community

every year.

For example, a former

client of our shelter in

Lakeview contacted The

Night Ministry via Facebook

earlier this year. Six years

ago, she was a homeless

teen, out of options and

needed a place to stay. Now,

she is a successful adult and

feels she owes that to The

Night Ministry’s involvement

in her life. She wrote to

thank us and to encourage

us to continue our work,

because there are many

more lives to be touched.

To ensure that The Night

Ministry can continue

touching lives, this year

we completed a strategic

planning process, the results

of which provide us with a

roadmap to guide our work

in the next three years. We

are establishing systems

for analyzing our program

results, and we are planning

our next moves in order to

keep providing the most

effective services possible

to Chicago’s vulnerable

populations. This plan

reaffirms what makes

us a unique, important

organization: Our focus

on those who are on the

streets at night and our

unconditional acceptance

of them, no matter who

they are or where they are in

their life. Such unequivocal

acceptance is the

cornerstone of our services;

in fact, sometimes that

acceptance is even service

enough.

Often in life, we do not

know how we impact others.

Rest assured, however, that

through The Night Ministry,

you do make a difference in

the lives of those whom society

has often forgotten or ignored.

This report highlights some

examples, and we hope you

will enjoy reading it.

Our work still isn’t done.

As long as there are people

who need us, we will

continue reaching out to

them. Thank you for joining

with us to help those in need

in our community.

Dear Friends,

The Night Ministry owns and operates two buildings as shelters for youth ages 14-20 who are experiencing homelessness. Youth come to our shelters for a variety of reasons: being kicked out of their home due to pregnancy, sexual orientation, or other reasons; family financial concerns, including home foreclosure; abuse and/or neglect at home; and mental health issues. Three programs are available:

• TheInterimHousingProgram is 120 days and provides guidance and support to help youth secure safe and stable housing, return to school, achieve financial independence, and access medical care.

• TheTransitionalLivingProgram serves young people who most likely will not be reunited with family. It provides educational, employment, health and life skills support for up to two years. This longer period allows young people the opportunity to structure a stable living situation once leaving the shelter.

• Young women with or expecting children find services tailored to their needs at our eight-bed, eight-crib Response-AbilityPregnantandParentingProgram. At-risk young mothers and their children who do not reside at the shelter also receive community support through this program, which is a federal demonstration project.

The Night Ministry exists to serve people experiencing homelessness or who are in danger of becoming homeless, and people who are vulnerable and experiencing hardship on Chicago’s streets. Many of The Night Ministry’s clients, because of fear, mental illness, poverty, or precarious living conditions, need a helping hand to utilize the healthcare and social support systems that can help them improve their lives.

The Night Ministry serves youth and adults regardless of their religion, ethnicity, social status or sexual orientation. By educating and building the capacity of volunteers and partner agencies, we call others to join us in our work.

Through consistent presence, along with messages of acceptance and hope, The Night Ministry’s trained staff and volunteers build affirming and compassionate relationships with adults and youth who are homeless, tenuously housed, unemployed, or living in poverty. The Night Ministry meets individuals where they are. We listen and accept without judgment, working to establish safe and trusting relationships so that we can offer support, encouragement and comfort. We are prepared to provide health care, referrals to additional services, and youth shelter to those who seek them.

The Night Ministry’s 38-foot Health Outreach Bus delivers free health care, referrals, and other services at night to six Chicago neighborhoods on a regular schedule all year long, regardless of weather. The Bus serves youth, adults, and families with its specially equipped nursing station, hospitality area, and private counseling and HIV testing room.

Thanks to our dedicated volunteers, 99,105mealswere served from the Bus to individuals out on Chicago’s nighttime streets.

youth outreach

In fiscal year

2010, we made

over 73,000

contacts with

families, adults

and youth from

the Health

Outreach Bus.

There are only 189 shelter beds in Chicago reserved for homeless youth. However, an estimated 2,000 youth experience homelessness every night in Chicago.

The Night Ministry’s Youth Outreach Team is often the first helpful presence for young people on the street. To help them be safe and access supportive services

that can help them stabilize their lives, the Team goes to neighborhoods where these young people congregate, such as Lakeview and Rogers Park.

Through the Youth Outreach Team’s large blue van, which has been operating at night in Lakeview for more than ten years, and in conjunction with the Broadway

Youth Center, The Night Ministry provides housing and job training referrals, education support, crisis intervention, hygiene supplies and meals.

Youth Outreach Team staff made

more than 9,000 contacts with over

2,000 youth in fiscal year 2010.

All the residents of The Night Ministry’s Lakeview Shelter are pregnant or parenting teens, so when the girls talked about wish-ing they could have a baby shower, the staff decided to throw one for them. “I got onesies, bibs, lots of diapers,” explains Niaesha. “What I got at the shower was all that I had for her.” What the seven expectant mothers took away from the shower and their time at the shelter was, however, much more than material gifts: they were able to build a support network. “This program changes you as a person,” explains Niaesha. “I used to have a nasty, outrageous attitude because I’d been hurt so many times, but at the shelter, they’re here to help you, and it feels very good to have that support.” Niaesha is now studying to get her GED, and is confident that she will go on to pursue her dream of becoming a social worker. She and her daughter Nevaeh were accepted into The Night Minis-try’s long-term shelter, where she can work towards that goal while focusing on being a great mom and shining a bright light for Nevaeh to follow by example. “I love being a mom,” she says, “She’s perfect, and The Night Ministry has given me everything that I need to succeed.”

When The Night Ministry’s Health Outreach Bus began making stops in Chicago’s Pilsen neighborhood, there weren’t a lot of people coming to use the many services it was there to provide. Gerardo was one of just a handful of people who came regularly to get a meal, but one night when he was very ill, he realized how much more the bus offered. Nancy Schreiber, one of the Nurse Practitioners for the Bus, treated him and was able to give him the antibiotics he needed to get well. Gerardo was so thankful for the services he received that he decided to use his talents to give something back: rain or shine, for the last three years he has brought his mariachi band to The Night Ministry’s Pilsen Bus stop, where he plays for the clients and staff. With his music, he’s helped to shine a light on the services available at the Bus and encouraged other members of his community who are in need to use them. Now an average of 200 people come every time it makes its Pilsen stop. “I like coming here because they treat me very well,” Gerardo explains. “I like coming here because I get what I need here.”

Lorenzo Rowell was just eight years old when he became homeless. “My mother was using drugs so I was taken away by the state, but I didn’t stay in one place. Every year I moved three or four times.” As a teenager, he stayed at one of The Night Ministry’s shelters for a month and learned about their Homeless Experts Living Life’s Obstacles group (H.E.L.L.O.), the longest continuously running homeless youth empowerment group in the U.S. Now, three years later, Lorenzo has started college and just moved into his first apartment, but he is still committed to the group and to shining a light on the issue of homelessness. Over the years, he has met with state senators, given testimony to lawmakers, led workshops, spoken at homelessness forums, done radio interviews, and participated in organized protests. He says he has the most fun at events like the H.E.L.L.O. art show, which showcased work done by the group about the problems they face as homeless youth. This year, Mayor Daley and Illinois Representative Greg Harris came to the event and heard Lorenzo present a 22 point legislative agenda he helped prepare. He is most proud, however, of going to the state capital to speak on his 21st birthday. “We actually got some funding for the homeless youth in the state because we went down,” he explains. “I think that’s the biggest impact I’ve had on homelessness.” When asked why he has stayed with the group for so long, his answer comes quickly: “Because my work isn’t done. It will be done when there are no more homeless people on the streets.”

Jan Rotter began volunteering at The Night Ministry four years ago when her youngest child left for college. With a degree in art education and years of experience teaching, she spends an average of two nights a week at the shelter playing games, watching movies, and making art with the youth. “I started keeping copies of their drawings,” she says. “If kids are homeless, everything they have is in a bag or suitcase and a lot of things get lost. This way I can always make another copy for them.” She also began drawing pictures of some of the children and babies in the shelter, and turned the drawings into a coloring book for new parents. “I was an adult when I had my first baby, and there was still so much to learn,” she explains. “When you’re 16 or 17 years old with a new baby, it’s hard.” The book talks about things like choking hazards, soothing methods, and how to hold a bottle. Jan estimates she’s given it to about 100 young people. “It’s a great way to get the information to them,” she says, “because they can just look at the book, and then we can talk about it. It’s not intimidating. And a lot of the parents are still kids; they still like to color.” If anyone is shining a light, Jan argues that it isn’t her. “I’m just so honored that I can spend time with these kids. For me it’s a great feeling and they absolutely bring a light into my life.”

NOTE: The Night Ministry has maintained a policy of having six months of cash reserves available to address financial hardships and to meet unexpected needs. With the challenging economic environment that was faced in FY 10, The Night Ministry’s expenses exceeded income. In order to continue delivering high quality services in response to increased needs, the cash reserves were utilized to make up for the difference.

Ora Mae Turner was a remarkable woman. When people asked her how she was doing, she always replied, “Oh, I’m inching along,” for she knew life is not simple, but easier one step at a time. One step that she always made sure to take was the step to help others. She

lost her mother when she was just eight, then worked to support her eight siblings when she finished the eighth grade. She was determined to continue her education, so she took night classes and eventually earned a bachelor’s degree in social work. Her 50 year career in the field was devoted to serving others, and in her free time she was devoted to her church, Church of the Three Crosses, where she worked on a number of committees and sang in the choir. When she died at the age of 94, she continued her legacy of helping others by designating

her life insurance money to The Night Ministry, for she felt it was an organization that reached out to many different people with many different needs and reflected the way she had lived her life.
