involved in ALSMU, ROTC, Del Rey Players, Club Sports,Resident Hall Association, Service Organizations, NCAA sports, the LosAngeles Loyolan, and many more on campus clubs and organizations.

The LMU Greek community is dedicated to the development of futureleaders and is a great resource for current leadership opportunities.Membership in a fraternity or sorority will give you the opportunity todevelop and practice leadership skills including fiscal management, publicspeaking, event planning, time management, goal setting, and personnel

management. In addition, your membership to a Greek organization willallow you to become involved in a chapter leadership position either as anappointed or elected officer.

Members of the LMU Greek community also have the opportunity forleadership experience through the LMU Greek Council, Order of Omega,Gavel Club, Undergraduate Interfraternity Institute (UIFI), and theAssociation of Fraternal Leadership and Values undergraduate conference.

BE UniqueRECRUITMENT ON THE BLUFF

Men’s Recruitment

Recruitment for LMU’s fraternity community provides men with an opportunity to explore all

six men’s groups on campus. The formal recruitment process is a week long series of activities

hosted by each organization near the beginning of each semester. Activities are held daily to

help inform prospective members on the unique programs and opportunities that are hosted

by each chapter. Invitations for membership, also called bids, are distributed throughout the

week. Although there is a formal week for recruitment, joining a men’s group is less formal

than the women’s process at LMU. Many of our chapters participate in what is known as year

round recruitment. Chapters are encouraged to host events throughout the semester that

provide interested men with a better understanding of what fraternity life is all about.

Panhellenic Women’s Formal Recruitment

Recruitment for LMU sororities is a unique experience that every woman should try. The six

member organizations of the National Panhellenic Conference (NPC) represented at LMU

host a three day process in January that allows prospective new members the opportunity to

interact with current chapter members. The formal NPC recruitment process at LMU allows

every individual the chance to see what each of its sororities are all about and gives the

individual an idea of which sorority is the right one for them................................................

Intake Process for Multicultural Fraternities and Sororities

Recruitment in culturally-based Greek organizations is also referred to as “intake.” The intake

process for each chapter is different and occurs throughout the semester, however each group

hosts information sessions where any interested students can attend. Other activities held

over the course of the semester are to help educate and inform perspective members on the

unique programs and opportunities that exists within those groups. LMU’s four registered cul-

turally-based chapters include Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority,

Inc., Sigma Lambda Beta Fraternity, Inc., and Sigma Lambda Gamma Sorority, Inc.

Financial Responsibilities

With membership in a fraternity or sorority also comes a financial obligation to the group.

These fees vary depending on the events the organization hosts throughout the year. Each

organization is self-supported and does not profit from membership dues. Many of theorganizations at LMU offer convenient payment plans or scholarships for those members who

have financial need. Sorority and fraternity expenses are greater during the first year of

membership because of new member and initiation fees that are only paid once. Remember

you are a member for life, so consider your college dues an investment in your future.

Examples of Financial Commitments

• Per Capita/Member Fees- An annual fee paid to the organization executive headquarters

• New Membership Fees- A one-time fee paid when you become a New Member of a Greek

organization

• Initiation Fees- A one-time fee paid when a New Member becomes an Initiated Member

• Brotherhood/Sisterhood Events

• Family Events

• Social Events• Greek Week

WHAT ParentsCan Expect at Recruitment

During NPC formal recruitment week, your student will have Greek Life recruitmentprofessional and student staff available at all times throughout the week to answerquestions and provide support through the process. It is important for students in therecruitment process to keep an open mind and look for a group where they feel most athome. The activities of the week can be very stressful and tiring, and you may be calledon to offer comfort and support. Each day the chapters are narrowing down their list of potential members and your student is narrowing their list of invitations as well. Thelength of the recruitment functions get longer as the week goes on to allow the students

and the groups the time to get to know each other better. It is important that yourstudents accepts all the invitations they are given to maximize their chance of becoming a member of the Greek community.
