THE NO-SPILL PRILLNew from The Scotts Company, Osmocote® Pro 19-6-9 with Fusion Technology™ was specially developed for surface applications in container nursery stock. When watered in, an innovative polymer compound forms a web-like adhesive which securely binds the fertilizer to the growing media without affecting the release of nutrients to the plant – making it a better investment for growers as less fertilizer and nutritional value is lost should pots fall over. Best of all, by virtually eliminating the need for reapplication, the product and labor cost savings to the grower are potentially significant.

Scotts® Micronutrients Scotts Micromax – The unique granular formulation of Micromax is designed toincrease the efficiency of the major nutrient program and to maximize plant growth by boost-ing micronutrient levels in the root zone. The homogeneous nature of the product ensures each granule contains all the secondary and micronutrient elements listed on the label for maximum consistency when mixed properly.CULTURAL PRACTICESMicronutrients in artificial/soilless media. The artificial/soilless media used by today’s grower generally contains inadequate amounts of micronutrients. These missing minor elements are vitally necessary. With the use of Micromax, the essential micronutrients are provided in the optimum relationship and amount to promote vigorous, balanced plant growth. The combination of Micromax and Osmocote® Classic will yield optimum crop performance.

Scotts STEP Hi Mag – Granular micronutrient product provides magnesium and micronutrients for a full growing season.

Osmoform® Slow Release Fertilizer (SRF): Osmoform is a slow release fertilizer. It is not based on a coating around the granules like with Osmocote, but on long nitrogen chains breaking down slowly. This process is influenced by temperature, microbiological activity and humidity. Osmoform contains N-P-K, magnesium, and a package of trace elements. The nitrogen composition is balanced to have quick plant reaction after application and a long-lasting effect afterwards.

Use for quick “green up” application or as a starter fertilizer. Can be incorporated or surface applied.

Since water quality is the single most important factor

in determining solubility and nutrient availability for plants, water quality is the heart of Peters’ A-B-C Selection System. Once

you know your water, you can automatically narrow your options to the water soluble fertilizers that perform best in your operation.

To make the system easy to use, all Peters products now carry a water type designation, so growers can quickly identify which formulations to use with various irrigation water sources. Plus, the entire Peters Excel® and Peters Professional® product lines have been restructured into clearly defined application categories.

Some formulations are labeled “A” for All Purpose. Each is a one-bag solution that eliminates labor and storage issues. When correctly matched to your water type, “A”

formulations ensure perfectly balanced and constant nutrient uptake.

One “A” formulation can take the place of several crop-specific fertilizers, because each has been tested and proven to work over a broad range

PLANTEX | WATER SOLUBLE FERTILIZER

Miscellaneous Water Soluble FertilizerHigh Nitrogen 28-14-14: Crops such as cut flowers, container nursery stock, and field-grown vegetables respond well to this formula. 28-14-14 is recommended for orchids and many woody ornamen-tals. Its very low salt index and high level of urea nitrogen make it very suitable for foliar feeding.

High Phosphate 15-30-15: Plantex High Phosphorus is ideal for hydrangeas since the high phosphorus levels tie up excess aluminum in the soil, resulting in a strong pink coloration in the blooms. Acid-loving plants such as African violets respond well to this formulation due to its high potential acidity.

High Nitrate 20-2-20: Plantex 20-2-20 is a high nitrate formulation containing a very low percentage of phosphorus. It's an ideal formulation for soilless mixes containing sufficient levels of phosphorus. The micronutrient package includes magnesium and a higher level of molybdenum to ensure maximum nitrate uptake.

High Potash 20-5-30: This high potassium fertilizer is ideal for use when plants are maturing and blooming. It allows the plants to establish heavier, thick-walled cells which results in good keeping qualities.

Pot Plant Special 15-15-30: 15-15-30 supplies twice as much potassium as nitrogen, while still maintaining the optimal levels of the other plant nutrients. Use Pot Plant Special on pot mums, Easter lilies, geraniums, gloxinias and when finishing poinsettias and chrysanthemums.

Remember – The thicker the bar, the more available the nutrient!

The Effect of pH on the Availability of Plant Nutrients

Although most growers are familiar with pH, not everyone realizes how complex it really is. In general, the term pH refers to the acidity/alkalinity of a growing medium. However, these factors also influence the availability of many nutrient elements as well as physiological responses within the plant.

The charts below show the relative availabilities of most plant nutrients at various pH levels. The thickness of each horizontal bar indicates maximum availability at the widest point and diminishing availability as the bar narrows.

Applying nutrients in the proper balance is essential for proper plant nutrition, but maintaining the pH of the soil mix so that these nutrients are available for uptake is just as crucial.

From these charts, you can see that an optimum pH in soil mixes is around 6.5, whereas the optimum for soilless mixes falls in the 5.0 to 5.5 range. Of course, crop needs and individual growing practices may vary, so it is important to always monitor your pH numbers.

Step 1Irrigate your crop. Make sure you get thorough and complete hydration. Wait approximately one hour before proceeding with PourThru to allow adequate time for equilibration.

Step 2Place a saucer under each container to be tested. We find that the inexpensive clear plastic pot saucers are good choices.

Step 3For the PourThru, use distilled water, not regular tap water or drinking water. The amount you use depends on the volume of the container. Use enough to get ~50 ml (milliliters) out of the bottom of the container.

Step 4Pour the water evenly over the top of the container. Remember the water is used to displace the solution in the container.

Step 5Let the container drain completely. Time will vary with container size, but it should be completed in a few minutes.

Step 6Pour the solution into cups or beakers for measurement. We find small plastic beakers are best so you can determine the actual amount of water drained. Variability in water applied and drained can lead to inconclusive results.

Step 750 ml is adequate for testing in the greenhouse. This amount is also adequate for sending to diagnostic labs for nutritional analysis.

Step 8Measure pH: Be sure to calibrate the pH pen or probe before use. Record value on pH graph.

Step 9Measure soluble salts: Be sure to calibrate the EC pen or probe before use. Record value on EC graph.

Step 10Check values on pH and EC tables and take appropriate actions.

The following is a step-by-step procedure for measuring pH and soluble salts in greenhouse crops using the PourThru method of soil solution extraction.
