2010-11 Schedule

2010-11 Season PreviewDespite returning one of the league’s top scorers and the

majority of the offense from a team that went 17-9 in 2009-10, Bridgewater Eagles head coach Jean Willi is guardedly optimistic heading into the 2010-11 season.

Senior guard Jordan Burkholder returns to the fray off of a fantastic junior season which saw the Turner Ashby grad score her 1,000th career point en route to earning first team All-ODAC honors.

Burkholder leads a talented group of returners from last season’s team that was knocked out of the ODAC Tournament by Virginia Wesleyan in the Quarterfinal round in a game that left a bad taste in Bridgewater’s mouth.

“For us to lose in the first round was disappointing. It left a bad taste in our mouths and we feel it’s a game we should have been able to win,” commented head coach Jean Willi, who enters her 15th year at the helm of the women’s basketball program.

In the backcourt, the Eagles enter the 2010-11 season without the services of point guard Lacey Barnett, who was

injured a season ago and will miss the entire season. Barnett averaged 22-and-a-half minutes per game prior to her career-ending injury at Randolph-Macon.

Without Barnett in the lineup, the Eagles will turn to junior guard Jenny Logan who produced at a higher level for Bridgewater a season ago. Logan averaged 25 minutes per game a season ago and netted nine points a night in conference play. Joining Logan and vying for playing time at the point will also be juniors Jessie Owens and Sarah Boeren.

“Jenny is one of the hardest workers on our team and I think she’s overcoming confidence issues that held her back in previous years. Sarah is also playing with more confidence, she’s getting used to our system. Jessie is also giving a stronger effort this season for us,” said Willi.

Sophomore Jessica Mullen also returns to the mix after seeing a lot of action as a freshman. Mullen averaged over 10 minutes a game and shot 37.5% from the field during her rookie season.

“We’ve been pretty impressed with Jess. She came back this year bigger and stronger and she just has that knack for the game. She’s going to be a solid player for us,” noted Willi.

Bridgewater also welcomes a trio of freshmen who will provide plenty of depth and could work into the mix early for the Eagles in Holly Morgan, Berlyn Seitz and Molly Shelley.

“Holly is going to be exciting for us to have. She’s a bit like Jordan, very tenacious, and is starting to understand our system more. Molly is working hard on defense and has one of the quickest triggers that we’ve had in some time. Berlyn is athletic and is a pretty strong shooter and could work into

the mix for us,” said Willi on her freshmen. At the forward position, Bridgewater returns three players who saw

substantial playing time last season. Returners Bianca Booker, Katelynn Hottinger and Emileigh

Lambert all saw more than 20 minutes a game for the Eagles and were the No. 4, 5 and 6 scorers on the Bridgewater team last season.

Booker shot at a 48.1% clip in conference play to lead the Eagles, while Hottinger picked up 19 starts in the post during her freshman campaign. Hottinger averaged 5.7 points per game and 4.8 rebounds during her rookie season.

“Bianca’s a hustler and is someone who provides a great spark for us,” said Willi. “We’re expecting bigger things this year from Katie. She’s a lefty, and she’s six feet tall, she just has to use her physicality to score the ball this season.”

Bridgewater also returns the services of senior Emileigh Lambert, who was a definitive role player for the Eagles a season ago.

“Emileigh plays hard all of the time. Last season was rough for her and I think she’s ready to atone for it during her senior season,” said Willi.

Bridgewater also returns the likes of Caitlin Boles and Brittani Criss who both were injury-prone in 2009-10.

Willi also welcomes one newcomer in the paint in Keymar, Md. native Rebecca Reifsnider. Reifsnider was home schooled, but played for a local team in Maryland and averaged a double-double.

“Rebecca is a great listener and is a bright player for us on the court. Offensively, Rebecca is a great face up shooter. She may not be physically there yet, but it will come,” said Willi,

Bridgewater was selected to finish fourth in the ODAC preseason poll, and Willi believes that the ODAC could be as strong as ever this season, with a top heavy slate that includes defending champion Washington and Lee and the perennial powers, Randolph-Macon and Roanoke.

But, Willi also feels the traditionally bottom of the barrel teams are making strides to make a stronger push in 2010-11.

“I think the ODAC is as competitive as it can be. The team selected to finish tenth, Hollins, is big and has the defending Freshman of the Year. So from top to bottom the conference should be pretty strong,” said Willi about the ODAC.

Bridgewater opens the 2010-11 regular season on November 18 when the Eagles host Mary Baldwin. The ODAC slate opens five days later when Lynchburg pays a visit to Nininger Hall.

2010-11 Season Preview

Head Coach Jean Willi and Assistant Coach Cyndi Justice have been patrolling the sidelines together since 1996.

Entering her 15th year at the helm of the Bridgewater’s women’s basketball program, Jean Willi has directed the Eagles to the 1999-00 and 2000-01 regular season ODAC titles, five NCAA Division III appearances, and the 1998-99 and 2007-08 Old Dominion Athletic Conference championship. Willi has compiled an impressive 274-111 mark for an impressive 71.1% winning percentage.

Willi spent 11 seasons as a Bridgewater assistant, before taking over as head coach prior to the 1996-97 season. Her first Eagles’ squad went 22-6 and gained the school’s first-ever berth in the NCAA Division III tournament, and Willi was named the Old Dominion Athletic Coach of the Year. The Eagles followed with an even greater campaign in 1997-98, finishing with a 24-5 season mark (a school record for season victories) and reaching the “Sweet 16” of the NCAA tournament. For her accomplishments, Willi was named the 1998 College Division Coach of the Year by the Virginia Sports Information Directors Association (VaSID).

The Eagles again reached the 20-win plateau in 1998-99, and captured the program’s first ODAC tournament title since 1990 with a 75-71 overtime victory over Randolph Macon in the championship game. For the fourth time in as many years as head coach, Willi again directed the Eagles’ to another 20-win season in 1999-2000. The team finished with an overall record of 20-6 and lost in the ODAC semifinals to Emory & Henry. The 2000-01 season marked another 20-win effort and another ODAC Coach of the Year honor for Willi as the Eagles won the ODAC regular-season title, finishing with a 21-5 record. In 2001-02 the Eagles finished 23-5 and lost to Guilford in the ODAC title game.

In 2003-04, the Eagles reached the 20-win mark again and tied for the ODAC regular season title with Coach Willi once again named conference Coach of the Year.

In 2005-06, the Eagles finished with a 24-7 record (tying the most wins in a season record) and received one of the at-large bids to the NCAA Division III tournaments. The Eagles advanced to the Sweet 16 with wins over Bates and Baruch, before falling to Southern Maine - the nation’s top-ranked team- on USM’s homecourt.

Two years ago, the Eagles became the first sixth-seed to ever win the ODAC tournament title. Bridgewater upset the #3, #2, and #1 seeds to capture Willi’s second title.

Willi has been actively involved in the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) and has served as the conference captain on the Division III basketball committee and has been chair of the South Region.. In addition, Willi also serves as the College’s Associate Director of Athletics and Senior Women’s Administrator.

A 1980 graduate of Bridgewater, Willi was an All-State selection in basketball as she helped lead the Eagles to the 1980 Virginia Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women’s (VAIAW) Division III championship. She still ranks among Bridgewater’s top 10 rebounders, and her 264 rebounds during the 1979-80 season stands as the second-best total in school history. Willi also was a member of the Eagles’ 1980 lacrosse squad that finished fourth nationally.

David Wade, Assistant CoachAssistant coach David Wade begins

his eighth season as an assistant with the women's basketball program.

Coach Wade brings many years of coaching experience from various levels to the BC program. Prior to coming to Bridgewater, he was the head girls' coach at Stuarts Draft High School where his teams compiled an overall record of 88-32. Wade retired in 2008 after 33 years of teaching.

A graduate of James Madison Univer-sity, Coach Wade earned his B.S. degree in health & exercise science and received

endorsements in general science and earth science.Wade and his wife, Anne, reside in Fairfield, Va.

Cyndi Justice, Assistant CoachNow in her 15th season with the

Bridgewater women’s basketball team, Cyndi Justice has helped guide the Eagles to two Old Dominion Athletic Conference regular season titles, two ODAC tournament titles, and five NCAA tournament berths since her arrival in 1996.

Justice assists in all aspects of the program including player development, devising scouting reports, game strategy, personnel decisions, and aiding in day-to-day administration of the program. In

addition, Justice also serves as assistant sports information director.A native of North Carolina, Justice is a 1992 graduate of Virginia

Tech, where she earned four letters as a member of the Hokies women’s basketball squad from 1987-91. Upon graduation, Justice coached for three years at Radford High School. She then returned to her hometown of Forest City, N.C. as a teacher and coach. She served as head coach of the volleyball and girls’ basketball teams and led the school to its first county championship in 17 years during the 1995-96 season. For her efforts, she was chosen as the head coach for the West squad in the 1995 Western North Carolina Girl’s All-Star game.

Justice has been an active member of the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) for 13 years.During the summer months, Justice is involved with instructional basketball camps. In her free time, she

enjoys spending time with her Golden Retriever - Shooter.

The College

College athletics has evolved to the point where total physical preparation is necessary to be successful. Bridgewater employs a five-member athletic training staff. Under the tutilege of Director Barbara Long, the group of Sarah Cook, Chase Hale, Ellen Hicks and Scott Powers serve as Assistant Athletic Trainers for the entire Bridgewater College Athletics Department.

Long is a graduate of Bridgewater College with a degree in Biology; United States Sports Academy with master’s degrees in Sports Medicine and Fitness Management and is currently enrolled in the Doc-tor of Education program in Organzational Leadership at Shenandoah University. She was certified by

the Board of Certification in 1989 and is licensed by the Commonwealth of Virginia Board of Medicine as an athletic trainer. Her career has had her working with professional and high level amateur athletes at places like the World University Games, US Olym-pic Training Center, and several professional football camps. She has also served as Head Athletic Trainer at Broadway High School and as clinical ATC for RMH Rehab Services, and Body Ease Physical Therapy, PC. Barbara spent 10 years as a clinical athletic trainer and through this work developed community education presentations and publications dealing with Exercise and Aging, Fall Prevention, Increasing the Functional Limits of Aging, and Children and Sports. Barbara and

her husband, Stuart, reside in the Lacey Springs area with their two children, Tyler and Cassie.Cook hails from Lewiston, Maine. She has a bachelor’s degree in Athletic Training from Colby-Sawyer

College and a Master of Arts degree in Sport Psychology from the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities. Sarah spent a summer as the head athletic trainer at J Robinson Intensive Basketball Camps and has experi-ence working with Division I Men’s Ice Hockey and Men’s Gymnastics. She resides in Harrisonburg with her menagerie of small animals. Her primary responsibilities are men’s and women’s soccer and softball.

Hale joined the Bridgewater staff in the spring of 2000 as the Assistant Athletic Trainer. He has a Bach-elor’s degree in Health Science/Athletic Training and a Master’s degree in Health Science Education from James Madison University. Chase is currently pursuing his Doctorate of Education degree from Shenan-doah University in organizational leadership. For two years he was contracted from RMH Rehab Ser-vices, where he also worked within the occupational and physical therapy departments, to provide athletic training services at Bridgewater College. In 2002, Hale moved to a full-time faculty position in the Health and Exercise Science Department where he teaches kinesiology and athletic training courses. In addition to teaching, Professor Hale also serves as the clinical education coordinator for the athletic training education program. His career has had him working with collegiate baseball, football, soccer, and volleyball. Cur-rently, he works with the College’s field hockey, lacrosse, and tennis teams. Hale lives in Grottoes with his wife Ada and their three children Charlie, Stella, and Eliza.

Hicks has a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Bridgewater College, and a Master of Educa-tion degree from Northwestern State University in Health Promotion. She was certified by the Board of Certification in 1996 and is licensed by the Commonwealth of Virginia Board of Medicine as an Athletic Trainer, Pharmacy Technician, and Emergency Medical Technician. Ellen has 11 years clinical athletic training experience; the last ten of those years were with RMH Rehab Services. She has also spent the last nine years working for Rockingham County Public Schools at Broadway High School as the Head Ath-letic Trainer. Ellen resides in Port Republic and primarily works with Volleyball, Women’s Basketball, and Track & Field.

Powers comes to Bridgewater College with a variety of athletic training experience. As a graduate of North Dakota State University and James Madision University, he has spent 27 years working in the clini-cal and secondary school environments. Athletic training has allowed him to work with several internation-al sports teams in many different countries including the 1996 Olympics Games in Atlanta. Scott resides in Dayton with his wife Pam and their sons, Justin, Jake, Joshua and Jason.

HEAD STRENGTH & CONDITIONING COORDINATOR JOE SOLTIS

ASST. STRENGTH & CONDITIONING COORDINATOR STEPHON HEALEY

The mission of the Bridgewater College's Strength and Conditioning Program is to assist BC athletes in enhancing their athletic performance. Our goal is to undertake this mission by reducing the risk of athletic injury, developing the force potential (strength and power) of each athlete, enhancing the specific movement patterns related to their activity and addressing the energy needs for each sport. Ultimately we intend to maximize the athletic potential of each of our student athletes.

Stephon Healey will begin his seventh year as the Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coordinator. Healey came to the States from London, England. Healey studied as an intern under both Keith Morgan at the National Sports Center in Crystal Palace, London and with Edgar Curtis at the Leeds Rhinos (professional rugby team). Healey has experience in competing and coaching at both Powerlifting and Olympic lifting meets.

Healey played collegiate football at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. A graduate from the University of Greenwich (London), Healey has his un-dergraduate degree in Education and Human Movement Studies. Healey is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist and a Certified USA Weightlift-ing club coach.

Joe Soltis is entering his eighth year as the Head Strength and Condition-ing Coordinator at Bridgewater College. Soltis comes to Bridgewater college as a USA Weightlifting Club Coach. He actively competes in Olympic Weight-lifting and won his weight class at the Arnold Classic in 2009.

Soltis played running back for Emory & Henry and spent four years as an assistant coach at Glenvar High School in Salem, Va. from 1990-94.

Soltis is also the Offensive Coordinator for the Bridgewater College Foot-ball team. He resides in Bridgewater and is married to the former April Fifer, a 2004 Bridgewater graduate and a teacher in the Rockingham County Public Schools

STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING

Celebrating its 35th year of operations, the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) is one of the nation’s largest Division III conferences. The 14- member ODAC, including one associate member, stands as the second-largest multi-sport NCAA Division III conference in the country.

The league was formed on May 18, 1975 as the Virginia College Conference and began operations in September of 1976. (The name change to Old Dominion Athletic Conference became effective January 1, 1976). Charter members were eight colleges located in the state of Virginia: Bridgewater College, Eastern Mennonite College, Emory & Henry College, Hampden-Sydney College, Lynchburg College, Randolph-Macon College, Roanoke College and Washington and Lee University. From its initial year of operation through the 1981-82 academic year, the ODAC sponsored competition in 10 men’s varsity sports, including football, soccer, and cross country in the fall; basketball, wrestling, and indoor track and field in the winter; and baseball, golf, tennis, and outdoor track and field in the spring. Women’s sports were added prior to the 1982-83 school year. Today, the ODAC has grown to Sponsor championships in 22 sports (10 men and 12 women) and houses nine full-time coeducational institutions with four single-gender schools making up the current 13 full-time members. The confer-ence expanded in the late 1980s, early 1990s and most recently in 1999. Virginia Wesleyan became the 13th member of the conference in 1988 and began full-scale competition in the league in the 1989-90 academic year. Guilford College, voted into the conference in the spring of 1990, began competing for conference championships in the 1991-92 season. The Catholic University of America (DC) was accepted for associate membership in football on January 12, 1999.

Over the past 16 years the conference and the City of Salem, Va., have gained national attention through hosting five NCAA Division III championships in football, men’s basketball, softball, base-ball, women’s lacrosse, and volleyball. The growing list of titles passed out in Salem began in the fall of 1993 with the DIII Football Championship. Through the 2008-09 academic year, the conference and city have hosted 46 NCAA Division III Championships since the ‘93 Stagg Bowl. This year, the two will serve as hosts to the DIII football and men’s basketball championships.
