USCAiken’swomen’sten-nisteamopenedits2010springcampaignwitha2-5recordthrough its first month of action. The Pacers’ fate in the 2010 season changed from there, startingwitha6-0thrashingof Mount Olive that began a season-hightyingthree-matchwinning streak. The three match winning streak was part of a stretch that saw USC Aiken claim vic-tory in four of its next five matches to improve back to .500 on the year at 6-6. USC Aiken would eventually close the 2010 campaign going

3-5 in their final five matches to conclude the year with a 9-11 record. The Pacers finished their conference season with a mark of 4-8. The four wins in league play helped the Pac-ers reach at least four wins in league action for the third time in the last four years. The Pacers finished the 2010 year with three student-athletes

being named to the 2010 Peach Belt Conference Women’s Tennis All-Academic team with junior Stephanie Humphrey and senior Brittany Telford earning first team plaudits. Senior Mathilde Grenet was chosen to the second team. All three are now two-time win-ners of the award as they were also named All-Academic by the PBC after the 2009 season.

Vision Statement: The Peach Belt Conference is committed to providing through its dependent collegiate members, a forum for student participation in athletic, academic and co-cur-ricular events under the auspices of the National Collegiate Athletic Association, Division II. We will exemplify the charac-teristics of a premier intercollegiate conference that prides itself on the inclusion of students of all demographic groups who wish to participate in a well-rounded sports program. Our institutions, our academic goals, our athletic aspirations reflect a communality of purpose and a commitment to excellence in the classroom and on the playing field.

History: Now entering its st year of existence in 00-, the Peach Belt Conference has become one of the elite Division II conferences in the nation. Since its inception in 990-9, the Peach Belt has developed a consistent history of excellence which continues to this day with 9 national championships and 25 national finalists. Starting with only two cham-pionships in 99, in men’s and women’s basketball, the conference has expanded to championship sports with the addition of women’s golf in the fall of 009. The conference traces its roots back to November of 988 when 11 schools first met in Greenville, S.C. to form a Division II confer-ence. Following a second meeting on Dec. 3, 1989, five of those 11 schools, plus two others, formed the Peach Belt and begin play in fall 990. The Peach Belt was less than a year old before capturing a national championship. The Columbus State golf team took the honor by winning the 1992 national crown, the first of three golf championships the Cougars own. One year later, the Lander men’s tennis team began their record-breaking run of eight straight national titles, the first PBC dynasty. Since then, USCA men’s golf has won three straight national titles from 004-06 while Armstrong Atlantic State women’s tennis has captured four titles overall.

The 009-0 season was among the most successful the league has seen in its 0 years. Armstrong Atlantic State won their third consecutive women’s tennis national championship while the Augusta State men’s basketball team continued their unprecedented run with a third straight appearance in the Elite Eight. Flagler became the first PBC volleyball team to reach the NCAA Final Four. The North Georgia softball team was ranked # in the nation in every regular-season softball poll while, in all, five PBC programs were ranked # in the nation (GC men’s golf, ASU men’s basketball, AASU men’s and women’s tennis). The seven charter members of the conference were Armstrong Atlantic State University, Columbus State University, Francis Marion University, Georgia College, Lander University, USC Aiken and USC Upstate. The name Peach Belt Athletic Conference was adopted in January of 1990 and modified to Peach Belt Conference in May of 000. Augusta State joined the confer-ence in 99 and UNC Pembroke became the ninth member on July , 99. They were followed by Kennesaw State University on July , 994, Clayton State University on July , 995 and the University of North Florida on July , 997. Kennesaw State and North Florida departed for the Division I ranks in 005, USC Upstate did the same in 007, and the conference welcomed in North Georgia College & State University in 005 and Georgia Southwestern State University in 006. In 009-0, the Peach Belt expanded to members, the most the league has ever had, with the additions of Montevallo and Flagler. The two schools also returned a league presence to Florida and broke new ground in Alabama. David Brunk was named the second PBC commissioner in May of 007. Brunk replaced Marvin Vanover, who was the first PBC commissioner from 99 to 007. Brunk is charged with continuing the strong growth of the conference as its second era begins.
