Regina Cougars (9-5 Canada West / 3- postseason) The Cougars earned the right to host the CIS West Regional at last weekend’s Canada West Final Four, where they defeated Alberta in the semifinals before falling 77-74 to Saskatchewan in the conference championship game. Expect the Cougars to roll with the same three-guard, two-post rotation they’ve used since losing leading rebounder Anne Mercer to a broken wrist back in February. That includes Joanna Zalesiak, Gabrielle Gheyssen, and Danielle Schmidt starting at guard for the U of R. Zalesiak has followed up a fine first season with the Cougars with a stellar second campaign, being named a Canada West first-team all-star after finishing second in the conference in both points per game and assists. Gheyssen is always a threat from the perim- eter and was strong last weekend in Saskatoon, scoring 32 points and going 8-for-13 from the land beyond in the team’s two games. Schmidt has started every game and averaged nine points per contest since the second half of the schedule started. At post, the Cougars rely heavily on starters Lindsay Ledingham and Megan Chamberlin. Ledingham was named a Canada West second- team all-star and averages 14.3 points per game including the team’s two postseason games, while Chamberlin played in excess of 30 minutes during both of the U of R’s quarterfinal games against Victoria. Receiving big minutes off the bench is guard Carly Graham, in her fourth season of eligibil- ity but her first as a Cougar after transferring from Simon Fraser. Graham set a school record with 52 three-pointers hit during the conference schedule. Post Vanessa Wesolowski has an impres- sive .778 field goal percentage and averages nine minutes played per game through the first four games of the playoffs. Rookie posts Jen- nilea Coppola and Kayla Hannah have also been used off the bench along with second-year guard Rayna Belyk and rookie Taylor Pelletier. Victoria Vikes (5-9 Canada West / 0-2 postseason) The U of R and Victoria are obviously no strangers. The two teams met just two week- ends ago in the conference quarterfinals, with the Cougars coming away with two close wins to advance to the Canada West Final Four. The Cougars and Vikes also split a pair of confer- ence games in Victoria back in November. Victoria, which finished sixth in the Canada West standings with a 15-9 conference record, was awarded the at-large berth to the CIS West Regional through a vote held by a committee of CIS coaches. Key players: G Debbie Yeboah (Canada West second-team all-star, 13.3 ppg), G Carmen Lapthorne (10.1 ppg). Regina vs. Victoria (conference): 10-8 Regina vs. Victoria (postseason): 3-3 UQAM Citadins (0-6 RSEQ / - postseason) UQAM finished in second place in the RSEQ standings with a 10-6 record. The Citadins de- feated Concordia in the conference semifinals, then lost 75-62 to Laval last weekend in the RSEQ championship game. The Cougars and UQAM have never met in the postseason. The two teams did play a non- conference game last season, with the Cougars winning 83-75 in a game held in Calgary back in October of 2009. Key players: G Michelle Auger-Bellemare (RSEQ first-team all-star, 13.8 ppg), P Emie Simard (11.8 ppg). Regina vs. UQAM (postseason): 0-0 Laurier Golden Hawks (5-7 OUA / 2-2 postseason) Wilfrid Laurier finished in third place in the OUA’s West Division this season, then recorded back-to-back wins over Guelph and Western Ontario to advance to the conference semifinals. They were beaten there by eventual OUA cham- pion Windsor, then lost in the third-place game to Toronto to become the conference’s No. 4 seed. Regina and Wilfrid Laurier met in a quarter- final matchup at the 2004 CIS Championship in Winnipeg. The Cougars won that game by a 68-52 score, but the two teams haven’t played each other since then. Key players: G Renata Adamczyk (13.0 ppg), P Christa Mancino (8.4 ppg). 200- Review The University of Regina’s women’s basket-ball team entered the 2010-11 season with a load of potential, which was recognized when Canada West’s coaches tabbed the Cougars as the early favourite to finish in first place in the conference standings. Part of the reason for the optimism head-ing into the season was the emergence of post Brittany Read, who was named a Canada West first-team all-star last year in her first season as a starter. Read had shown early indications that she would continue to be a dominant force down low for the Cougars this season, but was lost for the season after injuring her right knee in a game against Lakehead on Oct. 2. With Read out, Lethbridge College transfer Anne Mercer and third-year team captain Lindsay Ledingham stepped it up for the Cougars in the post and the Cougars went through their October non-conference schedule with a 6-1 record against CIS competition. Their only loss came in an 84-71 setback to Windsor in a neutral-site game in Edmonton. The Cougars continued the momentum into the conference season, reeling off seven consecutive victories to open the Canada West schedule. The unbeaten string was snapped after a road loss to Victoria, but the Cougars still took an impressive 10-2 record into the December break. The second half of the schedule started with a non-conference tournament in Saskatoon, where the Cougars defeated McMaster and fell to the host Saskatchewan Huskies in a New Year’s Eve battle. The Cougars picked up where they left off when the Canada West schedule resumed in mid-January, winning seven of their first eight games to run their conference record to 17-3. That set up a home-and-home showdown with Saskatchewan in a series that would basically decide first place in the conference standings. The Huskies took a 67-66 win over the

Cougars in Regina on Feb. 10, but just as impor-tantly, the U of R lost Mercer for the season with a broken wrist suffered in the dying seconds of the game. Saskatchewan completed the week-end sweep with a 100-87 win two days later, and the Cougars would go on to finish with a 19-5 Canada West record. Two Cougars were named Canada West all-stars after the conclusion of the conference schedule. Third-year guard Joanna Zalesiak was named a first-team all-star after finishing second in Canada West in both points per game and assists, while Ledingham was named a second-team all-star. Carly Graham, in her first season with the Cougars after transferring from Simon Fraser, set a school record with 52 three-pointers during the Canada West schedule – breaking the old record of 48 set by Bree Burgess in 2000-01. The U of R’s 19-5 record put them in third place in the Canada West standings, which earned them a home playoff date against No. 6-seeded Victoria in the quarterfinals. The Cou-gars, with second-year post Megan Chamberlin cast as a starter due to the Mercer injury, came up with a 66-55 win in Game 1 and a 70-67 win in Game 2 to register a two-game sweep over the Vikes and earn a spot in the Canada West Final Four. The Cougars entered the Final Four in Saskatoon last weekend as the No. 2 seed, thanks to Fraser Valley coming up with an upset win over second-place Winnipeg in the quarterfi-nals. Spurred by eight consecutive fourth-quarter points and a game-high 21 by Ledingham, the Cougars opened up the Final Four with a 72-68 win over the No. 3-seeded Alberta Pandas. That set up a date with host Saskatch-ewan in the Canada West championship game, which went down to the wire before the Huskies claimed a 77-74 victory. The Cougars can join Saskatchewan at the CIS Final Eight in Windsor with a pair of wins this weekend.

COACHING STAFFDAVE TAYLOR

Head Coach Dave Taylor

Steve Burrows Steve is in his fourth year as an assistant coach with the U of R’s women’s basketball team and his 15th season in the same position with the men’s basketball team. Burrows has extensive coaching experience in the province. He was the head coach of Team Saskatch-ewan’s Canada Summer Games teams in 1997, 2001, and 2005 and guided the 2005 squad to a bronze medal. Burrows is in his fourth year as the head coach of the Canada Basketball Centre for Performance and was also the head coach of Team Saskatchewan’s boys’ under-15 team in 2008. Burrows, who was the head coach at Winston Knoll Collegiate for 10 seasons, is in his fourth year as a physical education teacher at Camp-bell Collegiate. He played for one season with the Cougars, appearing in 18 games for the U of R during the 1990-91 season.

Dave Taylor was hired as the University of Regina’s ninth women’s basketball head coach in May of 2006 and will lead his team into the program’s fourth national tournament in his first five years as head coach. The Cougars won CIS silver medals in two of his first three seasons at the helm of the program, advancing to the final game at both the 2008 and 2009 national championships. The team also qualified for the CIS Championship last season, finishing in fourth place at the tournament hosted by McMaster in Hamilton, Ont. Taylor’s first season saw the Cougars post a 10-12 conference record and bow out in the first round of the playoffs, but the team has been among the top programs in the CIS since. The team went 16-6 in 2007-08, then finished 18-4 in 2008-09 and 16-4 in 2009-10 before registering a 19-5 record this season. Taylor’s .718 conference win-

ning percentage ranks first in school history, and his 79 wins trail only Christine Stapleton’s 101 on the U of R’s all-time coaching list. Taylor also enters the CIS West Regional with a 17-10 postseason record in his five seasons as the team’s head coach. Taylor has also taken the school’s women’s basketball program to the international stage, recruiting Polish point guard Joanna Zalesiak from a European professional team following a season with the University of Texas at El Paso. He’ll bring in his second international player next season, as former Purdue University guard and Westlake Vil-lage, Calif. resident Michelle Clark has committed to the Cougars for the 2011-12 season. The Cougars have had seven Canada West all-stars during Taylor’s tenure at the University of Regina, including three first-team all-stars (Jessica Lynch in 2009, Brittany Read in 2010, and Zalesiak this season) and four second-team all-stars (Chelsea Cassano in 2007 and 2009, Zalesiak in 2010, and Lindsay Ledingham this season). The U of R has also had one member of the CIS All-Rookie Team with Taylor at the helm, as current fifth-year guard Gabrielle Gheyssen earned the accolade following the 2006-07 campaign.

Taylor joined former U of R head coach Christine Stapleton’s staff as an assistant coach beginning with the 1993-94 season. He served as an assistant under both Stapleton and Jeff Speedy for 13 seasons before being named head coach following Speedy’s departure to the University of New Brunswick. The Cougars thrived during Taylor’s time as assistant coach, as Regina won a national championship (2001) and four confer-ence championships (1999, 2000, 2001, and 2004) and made seven appearances at the CIS tournament (1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2004, and 2005). Taylor served as the head coach of the senior girls’ bas-ketball teams at Usher Collegiate (1992-93), Martin Collegiate (1993-94), and Sheldon-Williams Collegiate (1994-03 and 2005-06). He also spent eight seasons coaching numerous Saskatch-ewan provincial teams, including two Canada Summer Games squads.

Corrin Wersta• 1999 CIAU Player of the YearWersta became the first player in University of Regina history to earn a Nan Copp Award as the nation’s best player after a stellar 1998-99 season that saw the third-year post lead the Cougars to their first Great Plains Athletic Conference champi-onship since 1991. The Cougars swept Manitoba in two consecutive games in the GPAC final series before going on to a fifth-place finish at the CIAU Championship. Wersta missed two of Regina’s 15 conference games, but still managed to score a team-leading 197 points on the season. She averaged 15.2 points per game and displayed the efficiency from the post that defined her five years on campus, recording an impressive 58.7% field goal percentage. Wersta was 59.4% from the field for her career, which is - by far - the highest in school history. She also scored 1265 points in her career, which ranks fourth on the U of R’s all-time list. She was inducted into the University of Regina Sports Hall of Fame in 2008.

Cymone Bouchard• 2004 CIS Player of the YearFive years after Wersta earned the Nan Copp, Bouchard became the second University of Regina player to be named the top player in the country. A force on both ends of the floor, Bouchard capped her outstanding five-year career by leading the Cou-gars to an 18-2 conference record, their first Canada West title and to within one win of their second national championship. She led Canada West in both steals (61) and three-point percentage (.483) during the 2003-04 season, finished second in the conference with an average of 18.2 points per game, and was fifth in the league with an 80.8% free throw percentage. Just as adept as a playmaker as a scorer and defender, Bouchard was second on the Cougars with 61 assists. She was inducted into the University of Regina Sports Hall of Fame in 2009 after a career which saw her earn three all-star awards and a CIS Defensive Player of the Year award in addition to her Nan Copp Award.

Guided by eighth-year head coach Christine Stapleton, the University of Regina’s women’s basketball team gave the school its first national championship in a team sport (and third overall) in 2001. The Cougars were loaded with three Great Plains Athletic Conference all-stars, which led them to a 20-2 conference record before earning a berth to the CIAU Championship in Edmonton after winning their sixth conference title. Regina defeated McMaster in the quarterfi-nals by a 93-49 score, then edged Calgary 71-67 in the semifinals to earn the right to play host Alberta for the national title. Led by Heather Dedman’s 24 points, the Cougars took a 94-85 vic-tory over the Pandas to become CIAU champions. Second-year guard Cymone Bouchard, who scored 14 points against McMaster and added a game-high 20 in the semifinals against Calgary, was named the tournament’s MVP. The team - which included current head coach Dave Taylor on the staff as an assistant - was inducted into the University of Regina Sports Hall of Fame in 2006.

The Lady Cougars collected the program’s first conference championship in grand style, upending No. 2-ranked Winnipeg in two straight games in the GPAC final. Coached by Sheila Beckie and featuring second-team All-Cana-dian Jackie Moore, the Cougars had a 7-5 record during the regular season and defeated Manitoba in the GPAC semifinal game to advance to the conference finals. The Lady Cougars surprised the hometown Lady Wesmen with a 69-64 win in Game 1 and followed that up with an even more impres-sive showing in Game 2, winning 77-64 to claim the GPAC championship. Regina went on to a fifth-place finish at the CIAU Championship.

After winning the conference title for the first time the previous season, the Lady Cougars went 11-1 under first-year head coach Debbie Patterson over the 12-game GPAC schedule. Regina was led on the court by fourth-year post Jackie Moore, who averaged 19.6 points per game and became the first U of R player to earn All-Canadian honours. The Lady Cougars hosted Winnipeg in the GPAC finals, winning 98-90 in Game 1 and 78-74 in Game 2 to sweep the best-of-three series and earn their second consecutive conference championship. The Cougars finished in fourth place at the CIAU Championship the following weekend in Toronto.

The Lady Cougars continued their dominance of the GPAC during the 1990-91 season, putting together an impressive 16-2 conference record. Jackie Moore had another fine season, earning All-Canadian status for the third time in her career. The Lady Cougars were matched up against Winnipeg in the GPAC final series for the third year in a row, and - just like in 1989 and 1990 - Regina came up with a two-game sweep over the Lady Wes-men, winning 95-91 in Game 1 and 93-74 in a physical Game 2. The Lady Cougars then recorded wins over New Brunswick and Calgary in the CIAU tournament before falling to Laurentian in the national championship game.

The Cougars finished with a 15-5 record during the 1999-00 regular season, the first in which the GPAC and Canada West played an interlocking conference schedule. Regina swept Brandon in two games in the GPAC semifinals, setting up a best-of-three conference final against Winnipeg. Led by second-team All-Canadian Andrea Gottselig, the Cougars scored a 62-50 win in Game 1 and secured their second consecutive GPAC championship with a 65-51 win in Game 2. The conference title was the fifth in the history of the program, and the Cougars went on to place third at the CIAU Champi-onship in Edmonton.

The Cougars, who became full members of Canada West starting in 2001-02, won their first Canada West championship in 2004. Guided by second-year coach Jeff Speedy, the Cougars started off the regular season with an 11-game winning streak and ended up with an 18-2 confer-ence record. The Cougars defeated the Calgary Dinos in two straight games in a best-of-three conference quarterfinal series, which ensured that the team would host the Canada West Final Four. The Cougars took out Simon Fraser by a 75-51 score in the semifinals, then won the conference title game 73-36 over UBC. Counting the program’s six GPAC titles, the conference championship was the team’s seventh in its history. The Cougars would go on to a second-place finish at the CIS Championship in Winnipeg.

Sixth-year head coach Christine Stapleton guided the Cougars to the first of what would be three consecutive conference championships during the 1998-99 season. Regina put together a 12-3 record during the regular season and, for the third consecutive year, squared off with Manitoba in the best-of-three GPAC final. The Cougars edged the Bisons 87-85 in Game 1 and, bolstered by the surprise return of first-team All-Canadian Corrin Wersta from a thumb injury, Regina put the Bisons away with a 71-60 win in Game 2 to claim the program’s fourth GPAC title. The Cougars took a fifth-place finish at the CIAU Championship the following weekend in Thunder Bay.

The Cougars made their final season in the GPAC a memorable one. The U of R rolled through the interlocking GPAC/Canada West regular season with a 20-2 record, then took out Brandon in two games in the conference semifinals. The Cougars were then matched up against Manitoba in the GPAC final - one of only two teams to defeat the Cougars in the regular season. Regina took its third consecutive GPAC title in two straight games, winning 88-60 in Game 1 and 61-60 in Game 2. The Cougars would go on to win three straight games at the CIAU Championship to earn the program’s first national title.
