Annual Report

Spencer Patton, senior, with the Kansas City Royals organization

On behalf of our coaches, staff, and student-athletes, I would like to thank you for your incredible support of Cougar Athletics. The success we attain both on the field and in the classroom could not be accomplished without our loyal supporters. This year we will complete our Division I certification process—a step that could not have been achieved without you.

Our programs made great advances during the 2010-2011 season. The men’s soccer team was runner-up at the Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) Tournament in its first

year of eligibility. The softball team, also in its first year of eligibility, finished fourth in the Ohio Valley Conference (OVC) race and participated in the six-team OVC Tournament. Our men’s basketball team won the Las Vegas Classic, thereby winning an NCAA Division I Tournament for the second straight year.

In the classroom, our student-athletes continued to excel, having posted a 3.125 grade point average (GPA) for the spring 2011 semester and an all-time best 3.184 GPA during the fall 2010 semester. The athletes have achieved a GPA of 3.0 or better for 10 consecutive semesters, an accomplishment which should not go unnoticed, especially in light of the number of contests that have taken place off campus since the transition process began and the increased amount of travel which resulted.

Five of our programs (men’s cross country, women’s tennis, women’s golf, women’s soccer, and softball) were among teams listed by the NCAA as having earned Public Recognition Awards for their most recent multi-year Academic Progress Rates. SIUE led the Ohio Valley Conference in the number of teams honored, followed by Eastern Illinois and Murray State.

Conference affiliation for all sports was solidified in June when the wrestling program was named an associate member of the Southern Conference (SoCon) marking the first time in the 41-year history of the program that conference affiliation has been achieved. SIUE joined Gardner-Webb (Boiling Springs, NC) and Campbell (Buies Creek, NC) as associate members and bolstered the number of members in the SoCon to eight. Affiliation with SoCon will afford the wrestlers an opportunity for post-season competition as well as Division I championships. Conference affiliations for SIUE Athletics, then, include the OVC, the MVC (men’s soccer), and SoCon (wrestling).

With the support from the University, as well as outside funding received over the past year, enhancements to our facilities continued. The men’s and women’s basketball locker rooms were renovated, synthetic turf was laid on the baseball infield, and the baseball clubhouse was remodeled. While these improvements helped ensure that our facilities more closely match those of other mid-major Division I universities, we continue to explore additional avenues funding for various projects.

Planning approval was given by the Board of Trustees for a proposal to resurface the track at Korte Stadium. We also received project and budget approval from the Board of Trustees to construct an indoor practice facility for the softball program. A 12,100 square foot building, complete with batting cages and infield practice space, is planned at an estimated cost of $980,000. Funding for this project will come from University Plant funds and private contributions to the softball program.

Another exciting facility project that is underway is the weight room, academic center, and the Charles and Mary Lukas

Athletics Annex which will provide approximately 29,100 square feet of new office space for the Intercollegiate Athletics Department. The project has received budget approval from the Board of Trustees and is projected to cost $4.5 million, funding for which will be obtained from private contributions and University construction funds.

The accomplishments of our student-athletes and our programs can be followed at siuecougars.com. We are working hard to see that our student-athletes, both current and future, are afforded a first-class opportunity here at SIUE. We will continue our sucessful efforts to graduate our student-athletes and produce programs of which you can be proud, while retaining our commitment to our alumni and dedicated Cougar fan base.

Should you have any questions about any of the materials contained in this annual report, please contact me at [email protected].

It’s a great day to be a Cougar!

Academic ExcellenceSIUE student-athletes posted a combined 3.124 grade point average (GPA) during the 2011 spring semester and have now excelled to a GPA of 3.0 or better for 10 consecutive semesters. The spring semester featured 11 athletic programs which finished with a GPA of better than 3.0. It closed out a highly-successful year for Cougar student-athletes who also posted an all-time best 3.189 GPA during the 2010 fall semester.

With its top-notch finish, SIUE finished third for the 2010-2011 Ohio Valley Conference (OVC) Institutional Academic Achievement Award which is presented to the institution with the greatest percentage of its student-athletes named to the OVC’s Honor Roll for that academic year.

The SIUE men’s basketball and men’s golf program each won OVC Team Academic Achievement Awards for garnering the highest percentage of players who were named to the OVC’s Honor Roll.

Ten SIUE student-athletes received the OVC Medal of Honor Award and 100 were named to the Commissioner’s Honor Roll. The OVC Medal of Honor is given annually to the student-athletes who achieve the highest grade point average (GPA) in an OVC-sponsored sport. A student-athlete must have at least a 3.25 GPA and be eligible and on the team throughout the competitive season.

OVC Medal of Honors winners posted a perfect 4.00 this past year. SIUE’s honorees include Cody Rincker (Strasburg) from men’s basketball; Megan Petty (Coal City) from women’s cross country and track; Clark Schmidt (Rantoul) from men’s golf; Kelsey Atteberry (Auburn) from women’s golf; Sarah Schuchard (Eureka, Mo.) and Chelsea Smith (Collinsville) from women’s soccer; Megan Murphy (Casey) from softball; and Jessica Hemann (Breese), Diane Schmidlin (Butler, Wis.) and Sydney Winslow (Farmington, Mo.) from volleyball.

Men’s golf earned the highest GPA of any SIUE athletics program with a combined 3.619 for the Spring 2011 semester. Women’s soccer earned the best GPA among the women’s programs with a 3.432 for the Spring 2011 semester.

Better than 62 percent of all SIUE student-athletes (158 of 253) finished with a GPA of 3.0 or better. There were 75 student-athletes who were named to SIUE’s Dean’s List, having posted a GPA of better than 3.5.

75 student-athletes were named to SIUE’s Dean’s Lists

Nine other programs joined men’s golf and women’s soccer with a GPA better than 3.0. They include men’s track and field (3.077), women’s track and field (3.025), men’s cross country (3.286), women’s cross country (3.211), softball (3.268), men’s tennis (3.183), women’s tennis (3.383), volleyball (3.229) and women’s golf (3.212).

Five SIUE programs also made national news. The SIUE men’s cross country, women’s tennis, women’s golf, women’s soccer, and softball teams were among the teams listed by the NCAA as having earned Public Recognition Awards based on their most recent multi-year Academic Progress Rates (APR). More than 900 NCAA Division I sports teams were honored for scoring in the top 10 percent in each sport with their APRs.

The APR provides a real-time look at a team’s academic success each semester or quarter by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete. The APR includes eligibility, retention, and graduation in the calculation and provides a clear picture of the academic culture in each sport. The APR awards two points each term to student-athletes who meet academic eligibility standards and who remain with the institution. A team’s APR is the total points earned by the team at a given time divided by the total points possible, multiplied by 1,000. It includes four years (this year’s numbers included the school years of 2006-07, 2007-08, 2008-09 and 2009-10).

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Jazmin Hill broke the SIUE freshman record for three-pointers in a season with 74 and became the first player since Misi Clark (during the 2000-2001 season) to lead the Cougars in scoring and assists. The Cougars finished 11-19 overall under Head Coach Amanda Levens, including a 6-6 mark against Ohio Valley Conference teams. That number of wins would have equaled at least a No. 6 seed in the OVC Tournament. Junior Melia Duncan became the sixth player in school history to record 100 or more career three-pointers. Sophomore Raven Berry led the team in field goal percentage at 52.7 percent, averaging 11.8 points per game.

WRESTLING

Michael Dace joined the list of national champions at SIUE when he had his arm lifted in victory at the National Collegiate Wrestling Association Championships in Macon, Ga. Head Coach David Ray had six other Cougars place among the top eight. They include John Petrov (sixth at 133 pounds), Eric Biehl (seventh at 149 pounds), Derrick Pousson (eighth at 149 pounds), Steve Ross (fourth at 165 pounds), Robert Cooney (fourth at 197 pounds), and David Devine (third at 285 pounds). The Cougars finished with a 6-15 dual meet record, including a win over Division I South Dakota State.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

SIUE won an NCAA Division I Tournament for the second straight year with a pair of victories at the IBN Sports Las Vegas Classic. SIUE defeated Longwood and The Citadel for the Upper Division title. The Cougars posted an 8-21 record, an improvement of three victories from last season under the direction of fourth-year head coach Lennox Forrester. Corey Wickware led the Cougars in three-pointers with 54 and finished with an 11.6 scoring average.

BASEBALL

After recording a 9-3 record and becoming the fourth player in school history to record 100 strikeouts in a season, senior Spencer Patton was selected by the Kansas City Royals in the 24th round (726th pick overall) of the Major League Baseball draft. Head Coach Gary Collins passed the 1,000 mark in victories to become the 55th coach in NCAA Division I history to accomplish this feat. His team completed the year with a 28-24 record. SIUE travelled to Columbia to defeat Missouri, a feat not recorded since 1984. SIUE’s season included a stellar 15-4 record against OVC opponents. Freshman outfielder Devin Caldwell was named to the Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American Team by College Baseball Newspaper. Caldwell led the team in doubles (16), home runs (6), runs batted in (53), total bases (98), and slugging percentage (.513). His 60 hits were the third-most ever by a Cougar freshman.

MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY

The Cougars competed in six meets, five of which were in the state of Illinois. Six of seven runners posted personal best times in the final event of the season under Head Coach Eileen McAllister. The Cougars won the SIUE Cross Country Challenge in September and showed dramatic improvement over the course of the 2010 season. Sophomore Aaron Werths led the squad for the first three meets while junior Marc Amarillas closed the year leading the way in the final three.

MEN’S GOLF

Neal McCarty closed out an outstanding career at SIUE by winning his third career individual tournament title in 2011. He won the Branson Creek Invitational by five strokes. McCarty led a team that finished 8-3 against fellow Illinois schools and was 6-3 against OVC schools during the spring season. The Cougars competed in 10 events under the direction of Head Coach Derrick Brown and had three top-four finishers.

Under the direction of Head Coach Jennifer Jakel, the Cougars competed in nine events and played host to the DoubleTree Intercollegiate which marked the first time the team has hosted a tournament since spring 2005.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

The SIUE women’s soccer team nearly tripled its win total from a year ago and finished with an 8-7-1 record under third-year head coach Derek Burton. SIUE was 3-2 against teams from the Ohio Valley Conference. The Cougars finished the season with an RPI of 188. Only two OVC teams fared better. Junior goalkeeper Claire Lovercheck recorded a career-high six shutouts. Sophomore Kristin Dierker and freshman Meagan Iffrig tied for the team lead with four goals each. Charles and Mary Lukas Athletic Annex

With the increase in the number of staff members over the recent years, office space utilized by athletics personnel has been pushed to the max. Further, the space currently used by athletics employees within the Vadalabene Center will be available for the Kinesiology and Health Education Department and its expanding staff.

The Board of Trustees for the University has, therefore, authorized the creation of new office space for the Athletics Department, utilizing a generous contribution from the estate of Charles and Mary Lukas. This new 29,000-square-foot state-of-the-art annex will not only just be home to the athletic department’s growing staff but will serve as great recruiting tool for our coaching staff, too.

Facility Enhancements Vadalabene Center Locker Room Renovations

The locker room facilities for Wrestling, Volleyball, and Men’s and Women’s Basketball have well served student-athletes who have competed on behalf of SIUE for the last 26 years. With the transition to Division I and the need to be able to compete in recruiting efforts with other Division I institutions, the SIUE Athletics Department launched a $1.2 million dollar remodeling campaign to update these spaces to accommodate our student-athletes. The current state-of-the-art locker rooms include a team area, an academic area, and a mentor office.

Simmons Baseball Complex

The clubhouse that long existed in the form of two trailers has been disassembled and a new 3,500-square-foot clubhouse/home dugout facility is being constructed. In addition to the clubhouse, a new state-of-the-art artificial turf playing surface was installed in the infield this past year. This addition of artificial field turf will make playing during inclement weather situations more permissible.
