SUBJECT: 2010 -2011 PRESIDENTIAL AWARD OF EXCELLENCE (PAOE) - Final

ASHRAE chapters are the backbone of this Society and play a central role in helping the Society achieveits goals. Through our collective efforts, ASHRAE chapters are a vital force in the HVAC&R communityand a resource for the global community.

My Presidential theme, “Modeling a Sustainable World”, highlights the role ASHRAE members play asleaders in sustainable design. In energy simulation, daylight analysis, CFD, and BIM software, we havepowerful modeling tools that enable us to create and refine our vision of a building – its appearance, systems, operation, and performance. Those resources, used effectively in an integrated design processfor new buildings and in analyzing retrofit opportunities in existing buildings, will help us guide buildingowners, developers, and contractors in building orientation, shading, and shape and in selectingmaterials, windows, equipment, and systems that optimize building performance.

This marks the fifth consecutive year that the Presidential theme has focused on sustainability. This focus

should be so ingrained in our lives that our mission “to serve humanity and promote a sustainable world”inspires our daily decisions.

The PAOE criteria have been simplified in some areas and the instructions clarified wherever possible.Several new activities have been added to support the presidential theme and they focus on integrateddesign, collaborating with our colleagues in the design profession, and expanding our understanding ofbuilding science.

100 points for each 3-hour seminar on a building science topic other than HVAC&R (i.e. fenestration, insulation, lighting) (300 points maximum)

50 points for each joint meeting with AIA, USGBC, and/or IES or other equivalent organization onintegrated design

50 points for each chapter program on building modeling (energy simulation, CFD, BIM, daylighting)

50 points for establishing a chapter user group on modeling that has an active on-line forum ormeets periodically (at least 4 times) to provide education and mutual support.5 points for each Professional Development Hour (PDH) earned by a chapter member on a building

science topic other than HVAC&R (i.e. fenestration, insulation, lighting) (100 points maximum)

There are six categories included in this year’s PAOE: Chapter Operations, Chapter Technology Transfer,Historical, Membership Promotion, Research Promotion, and Student Activities. To achieve PAOE, thechapter must earn the minimum points in four of the following five categories: Chapter Operations,Chapter Technology Transfer, Membership Promotion, Research Promotion, and Student Activities. Please refer to the criteria specified in each of the categories for calculating the PAOE points. additional information or clarification, check the PAOE Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) section on theASHRAE website.
