Head Coach - Tim Swartzendruber ● Career Record 55-37

Tim Swartzendruber, who led the Bulldogs to one of the most successful runs in program history, concluded his third season as the men’s basketball coach at McPherson College in 2010-11. Tim, who currently owns a 55-37 overall record with the Bulldogs, guid-ed MC to its second consecutive trip to the NAIA Division II Men’s Basketball National Championship. McPherson took advantage of the opportunity with a Cinderella run into the tournament quarter-final round. The Bulldogs knocked off No. 6 Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (Fla.) and Warner Pacific College (Ore.) before falling to eventual national champion No. 3 Cornerstone University (Mich.) in the round of eight. The Bulldogs, who sat in last place prior to the holiday break, won nine straight to earn the No. 2 seed in the annual KCAC Tourna-ment. McPherson advanced to the champi-onship game, but fell to No. 1 seed Sterling College. MC received the secondary bid to the national tournament because of its No. 2 seed in the tournament. The 2010-11 team tied a men’s bas-ketball record with 21 wins, while setting program-bests in points scored (2,520), field goals made (882), free throws attempted (774), rebounds (1,326) and games played (35). Swartzendruber’s second season ranks as one of the most successful seasons in men’s basketball history, as he guided McPherson to a 20-9 record and a 13-5 mark in KCAC play. The Bulldogs finished second in the KCAC regular season and received the programs first berth into the NAIA Division II Men’s Basketball National Tournament, in Point Lookout, Mo. In his first year, he guided the Bulldogs to a 14-14 record, including a sixth place finish in the KCAC. The Bulldogs’ season concluded when MC fell, 85-71, to the University of Saint Mary in the KCAC quarterfinals.

Swartzendruber was named McPherson College’s men’s head basketball coach in April of 2008, following four years as head coach at Hesston Col-lege, a two-year, NJCAA Division II college. During his four years at Hess-ton, Swartzendruber’s teams compiled an overall record of 70-56. His 2008 Larks team compiled a record of 23-9, defeating Brown Mackie in Region VI Division II tournament play before losing to Johnson County Community College in the Region championship game. The Larks placed two players on the 2008 All-Region VI-Division II first team.

Swartzendruber led the Larks to two of the three, 20-win seasons in Hesston College school basketball history. Five of his Hesston College players earned All-Region VI honors and one was named an Academic All-American. His 2007 team advanced to the Region VI championship game after his 2005 and 2006 squads both saw their seasons end in the first round Region

VI post-season play. In each of Swartzendru-ber’s four seasons, the Larks postseason runs were ended by Johnson County Community College. During the 2004-2005 season Swartzendruber’s Larks team set a school single-game scoring record when they rang up 152 points against St. Mary’s College of St. Mary’s, Kans. Prior to assuming the head position at Hesston College, Swartzendruber was head coach at Kingman, Kan., High School from 1989 to 2004. Following the 2004 season, he was named the Kansas Basketball Coaches Association Class 4A Coach of the Year. He was also named Midwest Sectional Coach of the Year and a finalist for the national coach of the year by the National Federation of High Schools Coaches Association in 2004. He served one term as president of the Kansas Basketball Coaches Association. Before heading the Kingman High program, Tim served as an assistant coach at Newton High for three seasons, then four years as

head coach at Wellington High School. His overall record in 19 years as a head coach at the prep level was 237-184, and included six league and four sub-state championships. His teams twice place fourth at the Class 4A state tournament. Three times, 1995, 1998, and 2002, he was named the All-Southwest Kansas coach of the year. Swartzendruber’s teams have been active in the community, reading in elementary school classrooms in McPherson and Hesston, volunteering dur-ing “Villa Days” at the Schowalter Villa in Hesston, at the Kristen Swartzen-druber Memorial Special Olympics basketball tournament in Haysville, playing a game against inmates at Hutchinson Correctional Facility, and assisting elderly move in and out of homes. A 1977 graduate of Hesston High School, Swartzendruber completed his bachelor’s degree in education at Bethel College, North Newton, Kan., in 1981, then went on to earn a master’s degree in sports administration from Wichita State University in 1994. Tim is the father of two children, son Tyler and daughter Taylor.

McPherson picked 3rd and 5th in KCAC preseason polls

Wichita, Kan. – Coming off the programs first appearance in the NAIA national tournament, the McPherson College men’s basketball team was selected fifth by the media and third by the coaches in the annual KCAC Men’s Basketball preseason polls. The voting was conducted at the annual KCAC Basketball Media Day in Wichita, Kan.

The Bulldogs, who finished 20-9 overall and 13-5 in KCAC play a year ago, garnered 75 points, including one first place vote in the media poll, while receiving 53 points in the coaches poll. Friends University swept the first place spot in both polls. Sterling, Bethany Southwestern and McPherson rounded out the top five in the coaches poll, while Bethany, McPherson, Sterling and Southwestern garnered the top five spots by the coaches.

The Bulldogs graduated seven seniors, including four starters from last year’s squad. Junior guard Aaron Frazier is MC’s lone returning starter from a year ago. Frazier averaged 9.6 points and 3.1 rebounds per game, including a career-high 18 points against Dakota Wesleyan University in the Bulldogs NAIA national tournament first round game.

McPherson opens the season on Nov. 2 at Haskell Indian Nations University. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m. in Lawrence, Kan.

Bulldogs down Haskell in season opener, 76-59

Lawrence, Kan. – Junior forward Jordan Crawford (McPherson, Kan.) poured in a game-high 19 points to help lead the McPherson College men’s basketball team to a 76-59 season opening victory over Haskell Indian Nations Tuesday night at Haskell Gymnasium.

“I thought our bench and overall defense were the keys to the game,” said McPherson head coach Tim Swartzendruber. “We need to continue to clean up many things on both sides of the ball, but I was pleased with our effort. I think we have a chance to be a good team by the end of the year if we keep improv-ing.”

The win puts McPherson at 1-0 on the season, while the Fighting Indians drop to 0-1.

Crawford had a solid all-around game for McPherson, as he connected on 4-of-7 field goals and 9-of-10 free throw attempts en route to his 19 points. In addition to scoring, Crawford registered a team-leading seven rebounds, two assists and four steals. Junior guard Aaron Jackson (Junction City, Kan.) and freshman Samson Shivers (Houston, Texas) were the only other Bulldogs in double figures with 15 and 10 points respectively.

McPherson found themselves trailing 16-15 midway through the first half before a stretch of four consecutive free throws from Crawford and Shivers pro-pelled MC to 17-16 lead. McPherson stretched its lead to as many as 22 in the first half before entering the locker room with a 44-25 advantage at the intermission.

MC shot 48.5 percent (16-of-33) from the field in the first half, while its aggressive defense held the Bobcats to just 29.0 percent (9-of-31).

Peru had better luck from the field in the second half, but the Bulldog offense never slowed down shooting 53.6 percent (14-of-26) en route to the 21-point victory.

Follow a pair of timeouts, the Bulldogs had the ball on the baseline with 1.6 seconds left. A tipped inbounds pass took one second off the clock giving MC enough time to get on last tip, but it was not meant to be as Shivers quick three-pointer was well contested and fell just short of the rim.

Jackson led all Bulldog scorers with 24 points on 9-of-13 shooting, while Jordan Crawford added 11 points and five rebounds in the effort.

USAO’s Sahlih Butts paced the Drovers with 28 points and 10 rebounds.

Bulldogs hold off Indians, 80-78

McPherson, Kan. – The McPherson College men’s basketball team needed a last second field goal to edge the Haskell Indian Nations Fighting Indians Saturday night in the final game of the McPherson Classic.

Haskell battled back from a 16-point deficit to tie the game with five seconds remaining 78-78 when Prevon Erving took advantage of a wide-open three-point opportunity. However, the Bulldogs had the last laugh, as Aaron Jackson (Junction City, Kan.) weaved his way through the Indian pressure defense before hooking up with Mason Hewitt (Norwich, Kan.) for the game winning basket. Hewitt, who was also fouled on the play, released the ball just as the buzzer sounded to give McPherson the win.

With the win, McPherson improves to 6-2 on the season, while the Indians fall to 3-6.

Jackson finished the contest with 18 points and two assists, while fellow guard Aaron Frazier (McPherson, Kan.) matched Jackson’s 18 to go along with six rebounds and five steals. Haskell would tie the score on Erving’s three-pointer before Hewitt’s last second basket gave MC the win.

Frazier’s 18 not enough as Bulldogs fall to UW-Platteville

Platteville, Wis. – Junior guard Aaron Frazier (McPherson, Kan.) scored a game-high 18 points, but it was not enough as the Bulldogs fell to host University of Wisconsin-Platteville, 70-56 Saturday night at Bo Ryan Court. The game is the first of two for McPherson in the UWP Thanksgiving Classic.

“Platteville’s size just wore us out,” said McPherson head coach Tim Swartzendruber. “They are an extremely physical team. I was pleased with how we competed overall. Our quickness gave them fits, but we struggled to finish in the lane. Hopefully we have bounce back against St. Olaf.”

The Bulldogs grabbed their only lead of the night three minutes into the game when Frazier hit his first of two three pointers to give MC the early 3-2 advan-tage. However, the Pioneers regained the lead on their next possession as Eric Wall tipped in the Chas Cross missed jumper.

UWP would extend their first half lead to as many as 10, 21-11, at the 7:58 mark of the first period. Kansas Wesleyan, who entered the game riding a two-game losing streak, took control of the game right from the opening tip with a 22-7 run that included nine points off free throws. The Bulldogs shot a dismal 8-of-31 from the floor in the opening 20 minutes and committed 15 personal fouls leading to 14 Kansas Wesleyan points.

Bulldogs lose at Ottawa, 85-76

Ottawa, Kan. – The McPherson College men’s basketball team succumbed to a second half rally by the Ottawa University Braves on Saturday evening, dropping an 85-76 decisions to OU on the road at Wilson Field House.

“The first half was as good of basketball as we have played all year,” said McPherson coach Tim Swartzendruber. “We defended well and had great shot se-lection. Ottawa picked up their defensive intensity in the second half and we didn’t respond well. We need to bounce back this week and get better against Bethel and Friends.”

The loss is the Bulldogs fourth straight and drops them to 6-6 on the season and 0-2 to open conference play, while the Braves improve to 3-6 overall and 1-1 in KCAC action.

McPherson dominated the first half, including a 16-0 run midway through the period to give the Bulldogs a 23-10 advantage. MC would push its lead out to 20, 46-26, in the closing seconds of the half when Samson Shivers (Houston, Texas) connected on a three-point basket off an OU turnover.

The Bulldogs finished the opening 20 minutes shooting 52.9 percent (18-of-34) from the field and 4-of-5 from the free throw line.

However, the second half would not be as kind to McPherson as Ottawa exploded out of the locker room with a 28-8 run to take back the lead for the first time since the 14:20 mark of the first half, 56-54. The Braves, aided by a number of Bulldog personal fouls, pushed their lead out to 11 late in the period fol-lowing a pair of DeMarcus Doucette free throws, 82-71.

McPherson would cut the lead back to six following Shivers fourth and final three-point basket of the night, but it would not be enough, as Ottawa converted three-of-four free throws to finish the night.

The Bulldogs were led in scoring by junior guard Aaron Frazier (McPherson, Kan.) with 17, while Shivers rounded out the double figures scorers with 14.

The Bulldogs employed a foul heavy defense to conserve clock, and behind seven straight points from Miller, were able to pull within six. However, the Threshers were too consistent from the foul line en route to the six point victory.

Bethel ended the second half shooting 72.2 percent (13-of-18) from the field and 73.9 percent (17-of-23) from the foul line, while McPherson converted just 32.4 percent (12-of-37) of its shots.Jason O’Brien led BC in scoring with 18 points.

Bulldogs edge Friends to grab first win in KCAC play

Wichita, Kan. – The Bulldogs held the Falcons to just two field goals in the final 11:50, as the McPherson College men’s basketball team edged Friends University, 59-57, Saturday evening at the Garvey Center in Wichita, Kan. The win is the first for McPherson in conference play this season.

With the win, McPherson improves to 7-7 overall and 1-3 in KCAC play, while the Falcons fall to 4-9 and 1-3 in league action.

“It was nice to bounce back with a win at Friends after a disappointing loss Thursday night,” said McPherson head coach Tim Swartzendruber. “I thought we played tremendous defense in the second half, while continuing to improve our rebounding. It was nice to get a conference win against a good Friends team going into the break.”

The MC defense held a solid Falcon offense to just 22.2 percent (6-of-27) shooting the final period, as the Bulldogs took a one point, 45-44, lead with 11:50 remaining in the game on an Aaron Frazier (McPherson, Kan.) layup off a Samson Shivers (Houston, Texas) pass through traffic. The play seemed the lift the struggling Bulldogs.

Shivers finished the evening as the lone Bulldog in double-figures with 16 points on 6-of-15 shooting, including four three-pointers. Forwards Jake Reinhardt (Walton, Kan.) and Mason Hewitt (Norwich, Kan.) led MC with six rebounds apiece, while Trent Severs matched his season average with four assists.

Shivers connected on a three-pointer with 6:19 left to lift the Bulldogs to its largest lead, 55-47. However, Friends battled back behind four consecutive Chris Jackson free throws to cut the deficit to 57-53 with just 3:39 remaining. Despite the late push, McPherson’s defense was too strong down the stretch to earn the win.

As a team, the Bulldogs finished the night shooting 35.7 percent (20-of-56) from the field, while holding the Falcons to just 29.4 percent (20-of-68), 15.9 percent below their season average. McPherson outscored Friends, 24-12, from beyond the three-point arc.

Friends was led in scoring by Jackson, who finished the night with 14 points.

McPherson returns to action next Saturday when they travel to NCAA division II Newman University. The exhibition between the Bulldogs and the Jets is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. MC returns to regular season action on January 3.

Bulldogs fall short in overtime at Newman, 89-87

Wichita, Kan. – Newman guard Keaton Schultz connected on five consecutive free throws to seal the Bulldogs fate, as the McPherson College men’s bas-ketball team fell, 89-87, to Newman University in an exhibition match Saturday evening at Fugate Gymnasium.

The Bulldogs opened the extra frame with a 5-0 run on a traditional three-point play and a pair of free throws by Aaron Frazier (McPherson, Kan.). However, the Jets tied the score, 84-84, with an old-fashioned three point play of their own and an off balance jumper off a McPherson turnover. MC would again take the lead on a Trent Severs (Inman, Kan.) floater, but it would go for naught as Schultz converted all five free throws following a technical foul and a personal foul on a three-point attempt to give NU the victory.

Frazier led all scorers with a season-best 26 points and six rebounds off the bench. The McPherson native connected on 7-of-15 field goals and 8-of-9 free throw attempts. However, the second half would not be as kind to McPherson as the Bulldogs turned the ball over 13 times, allowing the Jets to climb their way back into the game. Hewitt would send the contest into overtime following a pair of successful free throw attempts, 79-79.

In the News...Despite the drought, McPherson held a three-point lead with around 20 second remaining after Crawford converted a Tabor turnover. However, the Blue Jays would not be defeated as Kyle Wallace would connect on his only three-pointer of the night to tie the score, 63-63, at the end of regulation.

McPherson returns to action Thursday night when they travel to Bethany College. Tip between the Bulldogs and Swedes is scheduled for 8:00 p.m.

Bulldogs comeback falls short at Bethany

Lindsborg, Kan. – Chaos during the final possession forced the Bulldogs to heave a last second three-pointer that fell just short, as the McPherson College men’s basketball team’s comeback attempt fell just short, 81-78, against Bethany College Thursday night at Hahn Gymnasium.

With the loss, McPherson falls to 8-10 on the season and 2-5 in KCAC play, while Bethany improved to 7-10 overall and 5-2 in league play.

In the first half, the Bulldogs opened a fast-paced period with an 11-0 run to force a Bethany timeout just three minutes into the contest. However, the Swedes battled back, but it was McPherson who took at 42-39 lead into the break.

McPherson was paced in the period by hot shooting from the floor, as they connected on 51.7 percent (15-of-29) attempts, including 6-of-11 from beyond the three-point line. Freshman guard Samson Shivers (Houston, Texas) put together arguably one of his best periods of the season with 14 points on 4-of-7 shooting, including three three-point baskets.

Bethany quickly tied the score, 44-44, following a Haydon Parks three-pointer and Vincent Ferguson hook shot to open the half. A small run would extend the Bulldog lead back out to nine, but again the Swedes would answer to take a 68-67 lead with a little less than eight minutes remaining.

Despite their efforts, foul trouble made so the Bulldogs could not take the advantage on the scoreboard as MC’s last second three-point attempt fell just short.

McPherson finished the night shooting 46.9 percent (30-of-64) from the field, 36.0 percent (9-of-25) from three-point range and 69.2 percent (9-of-13) from the free throw line. Bethany shot 50.0 percent (30-of-60) from the floor and 72.7 percent (16-of-22) from the foul stripe.

The Swedes were led in scoring by Ferguson, who scored 28 points and pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds. Ferguson was 12-of-15 from the field and 4-of-6 from the foul line.

The Bulldogs will look to get back on track on Saturday when they travel to the University of Saint Mary. Tipoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m..

Second half run dooms Bulldogs

Leavenworth, Kan. – USM used a strong second half offensive performance to pull away from the McPherson College men’s basketball team in an 83-66 win in KCAC action Saturday afternoon.

With the loss, McPherson fell to 8-11 overall on the year, 2-6 in league play, while the University of Saint Mary improved to 13-7 overall and 6-2 in the KCAC.

In the first half, McPherson shot a dismal 27.3 percent from the field, but found themselves down only four, 34-30, heading into the intermission. Sophomore guard Kasey Miller (Derby, Kan.) paced the MC offense with six points, while Samson Shivers (Houston, Texas) and D’onte Woods (Houston, Texas) each had five.

In the second half, USM again had the hotter hand, as they shot 61.5 percent (16-of-26) from the floor, including 62.5 percent (5-of-8) from beyond the three-point arc. The Spires swung the momentum in their favor early in the period with a 13-2 run to gain a 54-39 advantage with 12:58 remaining. The run proved too much for McPherson to overcome, as the Bulldogs would pull no closer than nine points the rest of the way.

The Spires were led in scoring by Brandon Coleman, who ended the contest with 30 points, while Jeb Greenberg added 15 and Chris Wing 10. As a team, USM shot 49.0 percent from the field and was 8-of-13 from beyond the arc.

Overall for McPherson, Shivers was the team’s leading scorer with 20 points on 7-of-17 shooting. The performance is the second consecutive game where the Houston, Texas native has scored at least 20 points.

In the News...Bulldogs win overtime thriller over Sterling

McPherson, Kan. – Five Bulldogs scored in double figures, as the McPherson College men’s basketball team snapped a three-game winless streak with a, 91-83, double overtime victory against Sterling College Wednesday night.

The Bulldogs (9-11, 3-6 KCAC) jumped out to a quick 12-2 lead as five different Bulldogs accounted for the teams first six field goals to fuel the hot start.

However, Sterling (10-9, 6-3 KCAC), who entered the contest riding a six-game win streak, cut the deficit to three, 16-13, following a pair of Zach Poole three-pointers with a little less than ten minutes remaining in the period. McPherson stretched their lead back out to nine three minutes later when junior for-ward Jordan Crawford (McPherson, Kan.) hit a pair of his own to make the score 26-17. The two sides traded baskets the remainder of the half as McPher-son led at intermission, 36-30.

The Bulldogs shot an impressive 55.2 percent (16-of-29) from the field, while forcing Sterling into nine turnovers. Senior guard Trent Severs (Inman, Kan.), who entered the night ranked 12th nationally in total assists, posted eight assists in the period, while freshman guard Samson Shivers (Houston, Texas) led the team with nine points.

Junior guard Aaron Frazier (McPherson, Kan.) opened the second half with a layup off a Warrior turnover. However, Sterling again would not go away, as the Warriors rattled off an 11-2 run to take their first lead since the opening basket, 41-40, with 15:08 left in regulation.

The two teams traded the lead over the next five minutes, before the Bulldogs went dead cold from the field. MC failed to connect on a field goal for nearly seven minutes of the second period, but strong defensive play and timely free throw shooting kept the game close, 60-59 with less than four minutes left in regulation. Raheem Odomes gave Sterling a two-point lead with less than a minute left, but Severs answered the call with a running layup in the paint to knot the score, 66-66, and send the game into overtime.

In the first overtime, neither side could gain an advantage as both teams shot better than 65 percent from the floor and remained tied, 78-78.

Following a Sterling miss, Crawford connected on two free throws to give MC the initial, 80-78 lead in overtime number two. That start proved to be the posi-tive momentum the Bulldogs needed, as MC converted 7-of-9 free throw attempts to gain the eight-point win.

Shivers led MC with 18 points that included a 7-of-8 night from the free throw line, while Frazier added 17 and Mason Hewitt (Norwich, Kan.)chipped in 16. Junior guard Adam Bruner (McPherson, Kan.) tallied a near season-best 11 points and Crawford rounded out the Bulldog double figure scorers with 10 points and 10 rebounds for his second double-double of the season. The Bulldogs shot 48.6 percent (35-of-72) from the field for the game, 33.3 percent (5-of-15) from three-point range and 69.6 percent (16-of-23) from the free throw line.

Sterling guard Zach Goodrich led all scorers with 24 points to go along with eight rebounds and eight assists.

The Bulldogs will return to action on Saturday evening at 7:00 p.m. when they travel to Kansas Wesleyan University.

Bulldogs win second straight overtime thriller

Salina, Kan. – The Bulldogs opened the extra frame with three consecutive three-point plays en route to an 83-75 overtime victory at Kansas Wesleyan Saturday night. The victory is the second overtime win in a row and improves MC to 3-1 overtime contests.

The win improves McPherson to 10-11 overall and 4-6 in conference play, while the Coyotes fall to 7-13 and 4-6 in league action.

The Coyotes controlled the tempo for a majority of the first half, including a 13-0 run late in the period to give KWU a 35-17 lead with 3:32 remaining. A pair of McPherson three-point baskets from Kasey Miller (Derby, Kan.) and Aaron Frazier (McPherson, Kan.) brought MC back within 12, 36-24, at the intermis-sion.

McPherson struggled offensively in the first half, shooting only 29.2 percent (7-of-24) from the floor and were out-rebounded, 24-14. Kansas Wesleyan received 16 of their 36 first half points off the bench.

McPherson finally caught fire three minutes into the second half as MC used a 20-8 run to knot the score at 49-49 with 8:32 left in regulation. The run was sparked by a four-point play by Samson Shivers (Houston, Texas) and capped by an old-fashioned three-point play by Frazier.

After trading baskets for the next four minutes, Frazier converted a runner in the lane to give MC its first lead of the night, 55-53. The Bulldogs clung to the lead for a remainder of the period until Kansas Wesleyan tied the score with three late free throws.

MC had a final chance to win in regulation, but Shivers off-balance three-point attempt went wide.

However, the overtime period was all Bulldogs, as MC connected on 5-of-5 attempts from the field and 8-of-10 trips to the foul line. The period opened with three consecutive three-point plays by the Bulldogs. MC’s defense was relentless during the period holding KWU to just 3-of-11 shooting from the field.

For the game, McPherson shot 45.0 percent (27-of-60) from the field, 35.7 percent (10-of-28) from three-point range and 65.5 percent (19-of-29) from the charity stripe. Kansas Wesleyan turned the ball over 20 times, but held a 54-37 advantage on the boards. As a team, KWU shot 35.3 percent (24-of-68) from the field and 62.5 percent (20-of-32) from the free throw line.

In the News...Bulldogs cruise to 81-48 win over Ottawa

McPherson, Kan. – The Bulldogs shot a season-best 51.4 percent from the floor, including a 61.1 percent success rate in the second period to cruise to an 81-48 victory over Ottawa University Thursday night at the McPherson Sport Center.

The victory improved McPherson to 11-11 on the season and 5-6 in league play, while the Braves fall to 6-15 overall and 3-8 in the KCAC.

Four Bulldogs ended the night in double figures led by sophomore forward Mason Hewitt (Norwich, Kan.), who tallied a career-high 18 points on 9-of-11 shooting from the field, while fellow front court mate Jordan Crawford (McPherson, Kan.) registered his third double-double of the season with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Senior guard Trent Severs (Inman, Kan.) set a career-best with 10 assists, including six in the second half.

A pair of Chase Dippel three-pointers sparked a 12-3 OU run to open the contest, but the Braves success was short lived as the Bulldogs scored on back-to-back possessions, including a Samson Shivers three-pointer to cut the deficit to 12-9 with 14:05 left. Ottawa would add a pair of free throws before the Bulldogs blew the game open with a 16-4 run to take a 25-18 lead at the 3:38 mark of the first period. Hewitt tallied eight of MC’s 16 points during the stretch.

The two sides traded scores into the break with McPherson holding a 33-24 advantage. The Bulldogs shot a respectable 41.2 percent (14-of-34) from the field, but were just 2-of-11 from beyond the arc. Despite their struggles from long range, MC outscored the Braves, 24-12, over the final 14 minutes of the half. Hewitt led the Bulldogs with 10 first half points.

Much like the first period, Ottawa would jump out early with a pair of baskets to cut McPherson’s lead down to seven, 35-23, but it was all Bulldogs from that point on as McPherson outscored Ottawa 48-24 in the period en route to the 33-point victory.

In the second half, McPherson shot 61.1 percent (22-of-36) from the field, while holding OU to just 36.0 percent (9-of-25).

For the game, the Bulldogs defense forced 19 OU turnovers, as MC tallied 24 points off turnovers. The Braves were held to just 31.5 percent (17-of-54) shooting from the field. Dippel, who entered the game as OU’s leading scorer with a 14.5 points per game average, was held to a near season low six points.Corey Tate led Ottawa in scoring with 12 points.

McPherson returns to action on Saturday, January 29 when they travel to Bethel College. Tipoff between the Bulldogs and Threshers is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. inside Thresher Gymnasium.

Bulldogs hold off Bethel, 66-65

North Newton, Kan. – The Bulldogs converted 9-of-14 free throws in the final four minutes of the second half, as the McPherson College men’s basketball team edged the Bethel College Threshers Saturday night at Thresher Gymnasium. The victory extends MC’s win streak to four games.

The win improves McPherson to 12-11 overall and 6-6 in conference play, while the Threshers fall to 6-16 overall and 5-7 in league play.

McPherson recorded just one field goal, an Aaron Frazier layup in traffic, over the final four minutes of the game, but held off the Threshers with free throws. Aaron Jackson (Junction City, Kan.) gave MC a seven point lead with 20 seconds left before Jason O’Brien cut the lead to four with an off balance three-pointer.

Jackson was again sent to the line after being fouled on the inbounds, but failed to covert either attempt at the charity stripe. However, the Bulldogs pressure defense took too much time off the clock for the Threshers to get more than one attempt. O’Brien would connect on his second straight three as time expired, but it was not enough as the Bulldogs grabbed the one point victory.

McPherson shot 52.4 percent (11-of-21) in the second half and finished the game with a 45.5 percent (20-of-44) shooting clip. Bethel matched the Bulldog offense with a 44.4 percent (24-of-54) shooting percentage of their own, but it was McPherson who won the battle at the free throw line. MC outscored the Threshers, 19-9, from the charity stripe and finished the game shooting 70.4 percent.

After a sloppy first half, McPherson held a 28-27 lead into the break. Bethel opened the scoring in the second period with a Chip Schneider free throw to tie the game at 28-28. Follow a short stretch of cold shooting, McPherson opened up a seven-point advantage, 39-32. Jordan Crawford (McPherson, Kan.) and Samson Shivers (Houston, Texas) combined to score all seven points of the 7-0 run.

However, the Bulldogs would go the next six minutes without a field goal allowing Bethel to tie the score on an O’Brien triple, 46-46. As he did much of the night, Crawford converted a timely three-point play to give McPherson a slight lead with a little more than five minutes remaining. The two sides would battle out the rest of the period with the Bulldogs holding off the Threshers from the free throw line.

Shivers led the Bulldogs with 18 points on 5-of-10 shooting, while Jackson tallied 14 points and Crawford chipped in 12. Jackson’s performance is his first double-digit night since he scored 10 against Bethany College on January 13.

O’Brien paced the BC offense with 18 points, while Alonzo Haywood notched 16 points, respec-tively. Bethel dominated McPherson on the boards, 43-21.

McPherson returns to action on Thursday, February 3 when they host Friends University. Tipoff is scheduled for 8:00 p.m.

Shivers scored nine of his 12 points during the run, including back-to-back three pointers leading to a Falcon timeout. Friends would attempt to answer with a 10-2 run of their own to pull within four, 58-54, but the Bulldogs were too strong down the stretch.

Frazier finished the evening with a game-high 19 points on 5-of-6 shooting from beyond the three-point line, including McPherson’s first three baskets of the contest. Shivers added 12 points, while Crawford tallied 11 points and a team-leading nine rebounds in the effort.

Friends opened the game with a quick 5-0 lead following a Reggie Britton three and Brett Steven layup, but McPherson would hang close after a pair of Frazier three-pointers. The Bulldogs trailed until Crawford connected on a three-pointer of his own to knot the score, 17-17, with 6:54 remaining in the period. Both teams would trade baskets the rest of the period, as McPherson would enter the locker room with a 29-27 advantage.

The Bulldogs ended the period shooting 40.0 percent (10-of-25) from the floor, including 47.4 percent (9-of-19) from beyond the three-point line. Frazier paced the MC offense with 12 points on 4-of-5 shooting. All four of Frazier’s baskets were three-pointers.

Tabor would extend its lead out to a period high seven points following a Kyle Wallace three-pointer, but a last second trey from Samson Shivers (Houston, Texas) cut the deficit to four, 29-25, entering the locker room.

Both teams traded baskets to open the second period before an 11-2 run by the Bulldogs gave McPherson their first lead since 15:20 in the first half, 48-46. Back-to-back steal and scores by Shivers and Severs capped MC’s run.

Tabor tied the score, 56-56, five minutes later when Lawson Kingsley was fouled and connected on a runner in the lane. He converted his free throw attempt to complete the three-point play.

Strong second half propels Bulldogs to 83-68 win

McPherson, Kan. – The Bulldogs scored 47 second half points, as the McPherson College men’s basketball team defeated Southwestern College, 83-68, Wednesday night in the quarterfinal round of the KCAC tournament. The victory advances the Bulldogs into the semifinal round for the first time since the 2008 season.

Freshman guard Samson Shivers (Houston, Texas) reached double figures for the 21st time this season, as he scored a game-high 22 points, 18 in the second period, on 5-of-11 shooting and a 10-for-12 performance from the free throw line. Along with scoring, Shivers fell just one rebound shy of his season-best with seven boards.

Fellow backcourt mate, Aaron Frazier (McPherson, Kan.) posted 21 points, eight rebounds and two blocks on the night.

The two sides went back and forth in the opening 20 minutes as McPherson went into the break with a 36-33 advantage. The Bulldogs went on a 7-0 run, capped by a Trent Severs (Inman, Kan.) 3-pointer, to extend its lead out to 28-21 with 6:59 remaining in the opening half. However, Southwestern would not go away. The Builders used a pair of 3-point baskets and a 4-for-4 effort from the charity stripe to but MC’s lead to three at the break.

Both teams shot better than 44 percent, as McPherson converted 44.8 percent of attempts from the floor, while Southwestern hit 46.4 percent. However, the Bulldogs outscored Southwestern off turnovers, 13-2.

McPherson turned up the intensity to start to second period, as the Bulldogs rattled off an 11-5 run to push their advantage to nine, 50-41, with 15:18 remain-ing. Shivers opened the run with a 4-point play, before capping it with an alley-oop from Severs.

Southwestern cut the deficit to five following a Ethan Randolph 3-point basket, but another run by McPherson put the game at 63-49 with 8:30 left in regula-tion. The Bulldogs outscored Southwestern, 13-4, during the stretch, including a pair of back-to-back three’s from Shivers.

From this point on Southwestern began sending McPherson to the free throw line to attempt to slow down the run-and-gun Bulldog offense. Despite only shooting 59.5 percent (25-of-42) from the free throw line, MC proved too strong down the stretch, as the Moundbuilders would pull no closer than 11 points the rest of the way.

For the night, McPherson out-rebounded Southwestern, 44-36, while outscoring the Builders, 20-2, off turnovers.

Southwestern forwards Chris Nelson and Ethan Randolph each scored 12 points in the effort.

With the win, McPherson returns to action on Saturday, February 26 when they host Bethany College at 2:00 p.m. The winner between the Bulldogs and Swedes will advance to the KCAC championship game in Hartman Arena (Wichita, Kan.) on February 28.
