CROSS COUNTRY & TRACK - 3

Arguably one of the top coaches in the country, Ray Treacy embarks on his 27th season as Director of Cross Country and Track Operations at Providence College. In his 26 years at Providence, Treacy has coached 137 All-Americans, 13 NCAA individual champions, 133 BIG EAST individual champions and 13 Olympians. In addition, his teams have captured one NCAA Cross Country Championship, 11 NCAA Northeast Regional Champion-ships, 15 BIG EAST Cross Country titles and 20 New England Championships. Treacy's road to success began when he was a student-athlete at Providence College. A 1982 graduate of the College, Treacy is very committed to the success of PC's cross country and track programs. His knowledge of conditioning and training has moved the Friars' cross country and track programs into national prominence since he took over as head coach in 1984. Success and Ray Treacy have been synonymous at Providence College. Besides his long lists of BIG EAST, ECAC, IC4A and New England Champions, Treacy was instrumental in putting together the 4 X 1,500 meter relay team that set the world record at the Penn Relays in 1991. For his achievements, he was named Rhode Island Words Unlimited Coach of the Year (1991). In 1995, Treacy's women's cross country squad completed its incredible season by capturing its first NCAA title. Prior to winning the NCAA title, the women's squad also won its first BIG EAST and ECAC championships. In recognition of his efforts, Treacy was named NCAA Division I Women's

National Coach of the Year, BIG EAST Men's and Women's Coach of the Year, Rhode Island Words Unlimited Women's Coach of the Year and NCAA District I Women's Cross Country Coach of the Year. In 2003-04, the women's cross country team finished third at the NCAA Championships with juniors Kim Smith and Mary Cullen leading the way. Smith finished second overall, while Cullen took fifth-place to earn All-America honors. Providence was the only team to have two runners finish in the top five. The women's team also won their third Northeast Regional title as Treacy was named Northeast Regional Coach of the Year for the seventh time since 1990. In the indoor season, Smith continued to shine as she became the first Providence female athlete to capture two NCAA titles in the same meet. She won the 3,000 and 5,000 meters in NCAA record time. Smith helped the Friars to a ninth-place finish at the NCAAs, the team's best performance since 1992 when the Friars placed fourth. Smith's time of 15:14.18 in the 5,000 meters shattered the previous NCAA record of 15:17.28, which was set in 1991. In the 3,000 meters, Smith also set a NCAA record, finishing the race in 8:49.18 and eclipsing the old record of 8:53.54, which was set in 1983. On the men's side, Adam Sutton earned All-America honors by placing eighth in the 5,000 meters at the NCAA Championships. During the outdoor track season, Smith also won the 5,000 meters to claim her third NCAA individual title. In all, Smith set three NCAA records and four Providence College records. The 2004-05 season proved to be another banner year for Treacy's teams. The women's cross country team placed third at the NCAA Championships for the second consecutive season and captured its fourth BIG EAST title. The team was paced by Kim Smith, who capped off her brilliant career at PC by winning the NCAA Championship. Treacy also guided both the men's and women's cross country teams to the NCAA Northeast Regional title as he was named the regional coach of the year. The men's cross country team made its 10th consecutive appearance at the NCAAs and finished 21st. The team also won its 24th New England crown. Seven PC All-Americans were crowned during the 2005-06 season as the Friars continued their tradition of success. Fagan finished 16th at the NCAA Cross Country Championships to earn his first All-America honor. On the women's side, senior Fiona Crombie also was tabbed as an All-American with a 14th-place finish as the women's cross country team made its 17th consecutive trip to the NCAAs. During the indoor track season, senior Mary Cullen finished second in the 3,000 meters at the NCAAs, leading Providence to a tie for 26th-place and earning her fifth All-America

Treacy also led Fagan and Cullen to BIG EAST titles in the 3,000 and 5,000 meters as both were named Most Outstanding Performers at the BIG EAST Championships. The outdoor track season was another milestone for Providence. Running in her final race, Cullen won the 5,000 meters at the NCAAs and became the ninth individual NCAA champion to be coached by Treacy. Cullen's performance led to Providence finishing in a tie for 25th-place, the highest result of any BIG EAST team. The women's team captured a seventh-place team finish at the NCAAs, while the men finished ninth. PC's success at the BIG EAST Champion-ship helped to mark the men's 11th, and women's fifth BIG EAST team titles under Treacy's guidance. Providence has captured a total of 20 BIG EAST team titles in cross country (15 men's and five women's). On the men's side, Martin Fagan won the individual BIG EAST title and completed the season with a fifth-place finish at the NCAAs. Doetzel concluded her illustrious career at Providence College by capturing the 10,000 meter title at the 2009 NCAA Outdoor Track Championships. Doetzel's victory was the 10th NCAA individual title for the Providence College women's track and cross country program under coach Ray Treacy. In 1996, three athletes, who trained under Treacy's guidance at Providence, became PC's first female track stars to compete in the Olympics. Sinead Delahunty (1,500 meters), Marie McMahon (5,000 meters) and Amy Rudolph (5,000 meters) all competed in Atlanta, Ga. Treacy had three former athletes compete in the 2000 Olympics in Sydney. MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY

The men's cross country squad will look to its veterans to carry the team this year at the BIG EAST Champion-ship and NCAA Northeast Regional. Junior Lee Carey (Bedworth, England) is the top returning runner, having finished 52nd at the NCAA Championship last November in Terre Haute, Ind. Carey also was runner-up at the

NCAA Northeast Regional and placed ninth at the BIG EAST Championship. Ju-nior Dominic Channon (Nelson, New Zealand) will be next in command with Carey. Last season, Channon stepped it up when it counted, placing 66th at the NCAA Championship. In addition to the two junior captains, the men's team will look to its other experienced runners to round out the top five spots. Juniors Julian Matthews (Nelson, New Zealand) and Matthew Terry (Danbury, Conn.) both competed at the NCAAs last season and will use their experience to help the Friars this year. Other returning runners include the team's only seniors, Stephen Hankinson (Summit, N.J.) and Nicholas Barao (Riverside, R.I.); both runners have competed at past BIG EAST Championships and NCAA Regional Championships. The Friars have a strong contigency of underclassmen as well. Sophomore Ahmed Ali (Boston, Mass.) has a year of experience competing in the BIG EAST and incoming freshmen Francis Hernandez (Windham, N.H.), Alex Wallace (Waipukurau, New Zealand), and Jonathan Hopkins (Bridgend, Wales) should make an impact for the Friars as well. As a high school senior, Hernandez was one of the top runners in New England. He was the New Hampshire State Champion and finished sixth at the 2009 New England High School Cross Country Championship, making him a great addition to the 2010 Friar squad. The Friars will look to capitalize on the experience of the top runners this season, while looking to develop the younger runners for future seasons.

2010-11 MEN'S OUTLOOK

MEN'S TRACk

The main goal for the men's track team remains the same as every year: qualify as many runners for the BIG EAST, NCAA Regional, and NCAA Champion-ships as possible. Last season junior Julian Matthews (Nelson, New Zealand) qualified for the 2010 NCAA Outdoor Championships in the 1,500 meters event. Matthews ran a personal-best of 3:43.95 in the 1,500 meters last season and will look to improve upon that mark in 2011. Junior Dominic Channon (Nelson, New Zealand) also enjoyed success last season, running personal bests in the indoor mile (4:02.32) and outdoor 1,500 meters (3:42.25). Both Channon and Matthews qualified for the East Regional last year and will be looking to do the same this year. All-American junior David McCarthy (Waterford, Ireland) returns to the Friar squad. McCarthy has run 3:57.75 in the mile, which ranks fourth all-time at Providence. Senior Steve Justus (Okanogan, Wash.) set a school record in the javelin with a personal best of 59.05 meters (193-09 ft.) at the 2010 Bryant In-vitational. And in the sprints, senior Brian Stannard (East Longmeadow, Mass.) ran a personal-best of 49.04 in the 400 meters and will be looking to break the 49-second barrier in the 2011 season. The Providence College men's track team will prepare for another great season competing in the BIG EAST Conference, with hopes of qualifying for the NCAA Championships.

CROSS COUNTRY & TRACK - 13

2010-11 WOMEN'S OUTLOOK

WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY

The women's cross country squad gained a valuable year of experience last season. The past two years, the Friar women have finished in the top-15 at the NCAA Championship, including an 11th-place finish last season. This year, the women will be looking to crack that top-10 barrier, led by sophomore Shelby Greany and junior All-American Hannah Davidson (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.). At the NCAA Championship, Davidson claimed her first All-American accolade by placing 37th. Greany was the Friars' highest finisher at the BIG EAST Championship, placing ninth overall. Greany was also the 2009 NCAA Northeast Regional runner up at Franklin Park in Boston, Mass. Other returning runners include sophomore Samantha Roecker (Charlton, N.Y.) and junior Mary Kate Champagne (Plattsburg, N.Y.). Joining the squad this season are two inter-national talents, Laura Nagel from Napier, New Zealand and Grace Thek from Melbourne, Australia. Nagel ran a personal-best of 9:25.91 in the 3,000 meters at the 2010 IAAF World Junior Outdoor Track Championships, while Thek rep-resented Australia at the 2010 IAAF World Junior Cross Country Championsip. Other freshmen joining the squad include local talents Arianna Colella (Cranston, R.I.) and Erin Murphy (Attleboro, Mass.). With these talented freshman and a strong group of experienced juniors and sophomores, the Friars have high hopes for a top-10 finish at the NCAAs in Terre Haute this year.

WOMEN'S TRACk

The main goal for the women's track team remains the same as every year: qualify as many runners for the BIG EAST, NCAA Regional, and NCCA Championships as possible. Last year, the Friars were highly succesful in the outdoor season, qualifying a total of five women for the NCAA Championships East Preliminary Round - the most in program history. This included sophomore Shelby Greany (Suffern, N.Y.), who went on to qualify in the

3,000 meter steeplechase for the NCAA Championship in Eugene, Ore. At the NCAA meet, Greany claimed her first All-America accolade by placing sixth in the steeplechase, setting the U.S. National Junior record of 10:00.88. Greany also was the BIG EAST Champion in the steeplechase - the Friars' only BIG EAST Champion in the 2010 season. Junior Hannah Davidson (Saratoga, N.Y.) will compete with Greany in the steeplechase this season. Last season, Davidson was sidelined with an injury, but in her freshman year with the Friars she qualified for the 2009 NCAA Championship in the 3,000 meter steeplechase. In addition to the steeplechase, the Friars have great strength in both the 1,500 meters and 5,000 meters. Last year, senior Emma Perron (West Hartford, Conn.) ran a 5,000-meter personal best of 16:40.07 and sophomore Samantha Roecker (Charlton, N.Y.) also set a personal best of 16:43.78 in the same race. In the 1,500 meters, Charlotte Ffrench O'Carroll (Dublin, Ireland) rebounded well from an injury that kept her out of the cross country and indoor track seasons. Ffrench O'Carroll qualified for the East Preliminary Regional meet running a season best of 4:27.37. Overall, the Friars enjoyed a successful 2009-10 track season and will look to improve upon personal bests this 2010-11 season.

PROVIDENCE COLLEGE

PROVIDENCE COLLEGE Responding to the needs of Rhode Island, the Dominican Order of Preachers made a special commitment to the state in 1917 and founded Providence College — the only institution of higher learning in North America that is conducted by the Order. In 93 years, Providence College has steadily moved to a position of national prominence, while maintaining a personal, community-like atmosphere that fosters growth and development among its student population.

Providence College’s rich heritage dates back to the origins of the Dominican Order in Spain. Through the ages, the Dominican Friars became known as the “champions of the faith,” spreading the gospel message through the centuries into every corner of the globe. Today, Dominican Friars continue to spread the gospel in a wide range of remote areas of the world, to teach at every level of

the United States educational system. With the Dominican tradition as its

foundation, Providence College focuses on developing the entire person through its values-oriented education. The college seeks to complement a student’s knowl-edge with knowledge of his own values — values that will remain the foundation for sound judgement throughout a lifetime.

To that end, Providence College aims to relate its curriculum to the problems of contemporary society, offering diverse programs of study that remain grounded in the liberal arts. Students may choose from some 60 concentrations ranging from computer science to labor relations to theatre arts.

In addition, qualified students who wish to structure a program not spe-cifically provided under the regular concentrations may develop their own program with the approval of the dean of the college.

As part of the core curriculum, all stu-dents take a two-year, team-taught course,

Development of Western Civilization (DWC) which integrates the study of literature, philosophy, history and religious studies through the ages into a cohesive interdisciplinary unit.

Situated just on the fringe of downtown Providence, the College’s location enables students to have easy access to the many social, cultural, educational and recreational amenities of urban life - the Providence Public Library; entertainment at the Providence Performing Arts Center; sporting events, entertainment and trade shows at the Dunkin' Donuts Center and the Providence Convention Center, Providence Place Mall and dozens of fine restaurants. With several other major educational institutions located in Providence, the city has become a hub of collegiate activity.

THE MISSION OF THE COLLEGE

Providence College is a primarily undergraduate, liberal arts, Catholic institu-tion of higher education. Committed to fostering academic excellence through the sciences and humanities, the College provides a variety of opportunities for intellectual, social, moral and spiritual growth in a supportive environment.

The College actively cultivates intellectual, spiritual, ethical and aesthetic values within the context of the Judaeo-Christian heritage. These values are nurtured by the unique tradition of the Dominican Order which emphasizes quality teaching and scholarship.

Providence College recognizes the unity of the human family that proceeds from its one Creator. It therefore encourages the deepest respect for the essential dignity, freedom and equality of every person and welcomes qualified women and men from all religious, racial and ethnic backgrounds. Providence College prepares its students to be responsible and productive citizens to serve in their own society and the greater world community.

ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT MISSION

The mission of the Providence College In-tercollegiate Athletics program is to foster the personal development and education of young men and women through their participation in NCAA Division I athletics.

Athletic contests provide an opportunity for the campus and the community at large to demonstrate their support of the College, its athletics program, and the student-athletes.

The Athletic Department strives to fulfill student-athlete needs and goals in an envi-ronment steeped in the Dominican tradition in which honesty, integrity, mutual respect, effort and constant improvement are cherished and cultivated.

PROVIDENCE COLLEGE ADMINISTRATION

RoBeRT G. dRiscoll, JR.aThleTics diRecToR

Since Robert G. Driscoll was hired as the Associ-ate Vice President for Athletics on November 2, 2001, Providence College athletics has experienced unprec-edented growth in academic and athletic performance, fundraising, facilities and community involvement. Driscoll has reinvigorated the Providence College Athletics program, leading the charge with a vision of creating one of the most respected programs in the nation, where each student-athlete graduates and has the opportunity to compete for championships. Driscoll was recognized for his efforts on June 10, 2008 as he

was named the 2007-08 Astro Turf Athletics Director of the Year for Division I Northeast Region at the 43rd National Association of Col-legiate Directors of Athletics Annual Convention. He also was honored in 2009 by his alma mater, Ithaca College, where he received the Distinguished Sport Industry Leader award during alumni weekend. Most recently, he was elected as treasurer of the Division I-AAA Athletic Directors Association.

Providence College athletics experienced success in 2009-10. Part of Driscoll’s vision is to achieve a 100-percent graduation rate. In the most recent NCAA Graduation Success Rate data, Providence student-athletes graduated at a 93-percent rate, which was one of the highest rankings in the country for a Division I program.

Athletically, Providence finished seventh out of 95 Division I-AAA schools in the 2009-10 Learfield Sports Directors' Cup. The men’s and women’s cross country teams advanced to the NCAA Championships and the indoor and outdoor track teams participated in the BIG EAST Championships. The men’s soccer and field hockey teams advanced to the BIG EAST Championship semifinals, while the softball squad earned a berth in the BIG EAST quarterfinals. The women’s hockey team captured the Hockey East regular season crown for the third time and earned the right to host the league tournament at Schneider Arena. The women’s basketball team enjoyed its most successful season since 1991-92 as it posted 19 wins and made it all the way to the Women’s National Invitation Tournament (WNIT) quarterfinals.

There also have been numerous facility improvements. The men’s soc-cer program received a generous donation from John Murphy ‘80 and renovated the soccer offices. The Joyce Murphy Soccer Suite opened in November of 2008. The suite features new offices, meeting spaces and a lounge area equipped with flat screen televisions. In addition, the men’s soccer locker room also was refurbished thanks to a donation by Kerry and Karl Anderson ‘87. With the creation of the BIG EAST Lacrosse Conference, the lacrosse offices were renovated to go along with a new locker room. The volleyball locker room also was renovated and a new women’s basketball video room was created. Furthermore, the track/cross country offices and the women’s soccer offices also were refurbished. The Helen Bert Student-Athlete Study Lounge, which was opened in 2007, was recently expanded. Thanks to a generous donation from Judge Bill Leary ’60 and his wife, Emily, the Friends of Friar Hockey Room also was renovated at Schneider Arena and the Bob O’Connor ’62 media library was opened.

In August of 2007, the Concannon Fitness Center, a state-of-the-art $18 million facility, was opened. The Concannon Fitness Center is adjacent to the $6 million Friar Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex, which was completed in August 2005. The Fitness Center houses the Friars’ Jimmy Walker Strength and Conditioning Center as well as administrative and coaching offices, conference rooms and locker rooms. The construction project also provides the department with a state-of-the-art sports medicine complex and a new ticket office. The Canavan Sports Medicine Center, which was completed in August of 2008, is equipped with a hydrotherapy room, which includes a SwimEx rehab pool and two plunges for cold/hot therapy.

Many of the College’s athletic improvements were made possible through Driscoll's fundraising efforts. In each of the eight years that Driscoll has led the Friars, the athletic department has exceeded its fundraising goals and has generated millions of dollars that have been utilized for student-athlete development and facility enhancements.

Driscoll is currently a member of the NCAA Ice Hockey Championship Committee and will serve as the Committee Chair in 2010-11. He also represents the BIG EAST’s Athletic Directors on the Student-Athlete Advisory Council, serves on the BIG EAST Finance Committee and the HOCKEY EAST Television Negotiations Committee. He previously served on the NCAA Division I Management Council and was an NCAA Fellows Programs Executive Mentor.

Driscoll joined the Providence community after 14½ years in athletic administration at the University of California, Berkeley. At Cal, Driscoll served as the Executive Associate Athletic Director and was responsible for the day-to-day operations of the department as well as overseeing football, men’s basketball, men’s and women’s swimming, men’s and women’s water polo, rugby, strength training, equipment and the sports medicine programs.

Driscoll was hired at Cal as the Associate Athletic Director for Student Services, a position he held for five years. He then assumed the position of Executive Associate Athletic Director, at which point he was responsible for the administration of 27 varsity sports. During his tenure at Cal, he oversaw 25 club sports, a staff of 250 and a $36 million budget. Prior to coming to Providence, he served as the Acting Executive Director for Intercollegiate Athletics and Recreational Sports. During his tenure, Cal won over 20 national championships, competed in the Citrus, Copper, Alamo and Aloha Bowls, NCAA Basketball Tournaments and the College World Series for baseball and softball. The Bears also finished as high as 12th in the NACDA Directors’ Cup.

Before arriving at Cal, Driscoll served six years (1981-87) as the Athletic Director and Chair of the Department of Physical Education, Recreation and Intramural Sports at Mills College in Oakland, Calif. Prior to arriving at Mills, Driscoll was Assistant Athletic Director and Head Baseball and Hockey Coach at Union College in Schenectady, N.Y. from 1977-81. Driscoll was a stand-out hockey and baseball player at Ithaca College (N.Y.), where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in physical education in 1974. He earned his Master of Science in Physical Education/Psychology of Sports from Ithaca in 1975.

A native of West Concord, Mass., Driscoll was inducted into the inaugural class of Concord-Carlisle High School’s Athletic Hall of Fame (football, ice hockey and baseball) in 1993. He is the proud father of three children: Tara, Kelly, and Sean, a graduate of Providence College. He and his wife Cathy reside in North Kingstown.

ReVeRend BRian J. shanley, o.P. PResidenT

On February 1, 2005, Providence College announced the election of Reverend Brian J. Shanley, O.P., to serve as the 12th president of the College. Prior to his arrival at Providence, Father Shanley served as an associate professor in the School of Philosophy at The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C.

Father Shanley is a native of Warwick, Rhode Island. A parishioner at St. Gregory the

Great Church, he attended local public schools, graduating from Toll Gate High School in 1976.

In 1980, Father Shanley earned his undergraduate degree in history at Provi-dence College. He holds a doctorate degree in philosophy from the University of Toronto, where he completed the Collaborative Providence in Philosophy and Medieval Studies. He also holds a master of divinity degree (theology) and the Licentiate in Sacred Theology (S.T.L.), both from the Dominican House of Studies in Washington, D.C. (Pontifical Faculty of the Immaculate Conception.)

Ordained to the priesthood in 1987, Father Shanley has devoted his entire career to teaching and administration in Catholic higher education. Following teaching assignments at Providence College and the University of Toronto, he began his tenure at The Catholic University of America in 1994, achieving the rank of associate professor in 2001. Father Shanley’s first teaching assignment was at Providence College from 1988-91. He was an instructor of philosophy, and taught in the Development of Western Civilization Program.

Father Shanley spent the Fall 2002 semester as a visiting professor at the Candler School of Theology at Emory University. He previously engaged in a post-doctoral fellowship at the University of Notre Dame’s Center for Philosophy of Religion in 1998-99.

As the Regent of Studies for the Dominican Province of St. Joseph, Father Shanley holds a seat on the Provincial Council, a body of 12 Dominican Friars serving as cabinet-level advisors to the Prior Provincial. He advises the Prior Provincial on all matters pertaining to the intellectual and academic life of the Province and oversees the academic endeavors of members of the Province, including those in preparation for the priesthood and those engaged in graduate studies.
