Arguably the greatest golfer to ever play at Bowling Green State University, Garry Winger enters his 13th season at the helm of the men’s golf program for BGSU.

The London, Ontario, native was a four-year (1991-94) letterwinner at BGSU and helped the Falcons to a third-place Mid-American Conference nish in 1994, the best by the program in ten years. He nished third individually and earned All-MAC honors that season. Winger was also named the recipient of the 1994 MAC Sportsmanship Award, which was voted on by the players.

Following his time at BGSU, Winger was a member of the 1995 Canadian Paci c Rim Team that participated in Wellington, New Zealand. During that same season, he participated in the New Zealand Amateur.

Winger won ve professional tournaments in his career (1996-98), which included wins on the Tommy Armour Tour and the Cleveland Tour in Orlando, Florida.

As a professional he played on the Canadian Tour for six events in 1996, before playing full-time a year later. In 1997, he was the only Canadian to qualify for the Canadian Tour out of the Spring Qualifying school.

Winger began his tenure as head coach of the Falcons in the fall of 1998. From his rst to his second season, Winger led the Orange and Brown to a four-place improvement at the MAC Championships (tenth, 1999) to (sixth, 2000). Bowling Green then nished sixth at the MAC Championships in 2001 for the team’s best back-to-back nish at the league tournament since 1994-95. His 2000-01 squad established new school records for 54 holes (863, -1) and 18 holes (283, -5).

In 2003-04, the Falcons recorded three runner-up and three third-place nishes as a team. Individually, the Falcons had their rst individual medalist in a tourna-ment in 21 years when Heath Ziglar captured the Earl Yestingsmeier Invitational on Oct. 5, 2003.

In 2005-06, Winger coached the Falcons to the John Piper Invitational title. In that tournament alone, the Falcons set school records for lowest 18- (275), 36- (562) and 54-hole (845) scores.

During the 2006-07 season, Winger took a squad of two juniors and three fresh-man to the MAC Championships and nished sixth in the nine team eld. On the nal day of competition the Falcons were the lone team under par (-1).

The followinug season, Winger coached Jace Walker, who nished as a member of the second-team All-MAC squad. Walker nished his career with a 74.98 stroke average, breaking Winger’s previous school record of 75.00 for a career. That same season, Winger and the Falcons established a new team low average (296.0), breaking

WINGER’S AMATUER CAREER• Owns the lowest season scoring average (72.4) at BGSU.• Was a member of the 1993 Ontario Willington Cup Team.• Runner-up at the 1990 Ontario Junior Championships.• Member of the 1995 Canadian Paci c Rim Team in Wellington, New Zealand.• Semi nalist at the 1995 Canadian Amatuer (lost to PGA Tour win-ner Garrett Willis).• Participated in the 1995 New Zealand Amateur.

WINGER’S PROFESSIONAL CAREER• Won ve mini tour events in Florida on the Tommy Armour Tour and the Cleveland Tour in Orlando, Florida.• Only Canadian to Qualify for the 1997 Canadian Tour out of the Spring Qualifying school.• Played in six events on the Canadian Tour in 1996.• Played the Canadian Tour full-time in 1997.

the school mark set by the Falcons in the 2001-02.

Over the course of the 2008-09 season, Winger coached Matt Schneider to a vic-tory at the John Piper Intercollegiate. Over the course of the season, Schneider won MAC Golfer of the Week honors three times; John Powers and Drew Preston also won the honor during the campaign. Overall, the team posted back-to-back top- ve nishes at the John Piper and the Earl Yestingsmeier Intercollegiate.

Last season, the Falcons started the year with back-to-back victories at the John Piper and Earl Yestingsmeier tournaments, on the way to ve top-5 nishes out of 12 events. Matt Schneider won two tournaments, while Drew Preston also brought home an individual title. Both won MAC Golfer of the Week for their winning efforts. Schneider ended his career with school records for career average (74.43), career wins (3) and season wins (2). School records for team (556) and individual (132) 36-hole scores were set at the Earl Yestingsmeier tournament.

Thus far in the 2010-11 season, Winger has led the Falcons to a second consecutive victory at the John Piper Intercollegiate and a third-place nish at the Tiger Inter-collegiate. However, the highlight of the season thus far is the team’s second-place nish at the APSU Intercollegiate. Playing in the event for the rst time, the team establsihed 18- (274) and 54-hole (831) school records, breaking those set at the 2005 John Piper Intercollegiate. The 54-hole mark shattered the old record by 14 strokes.

Sophomore Charlie Olson, a transfer from Hope College, won his rst career tournament at the APSU tournament on the second-hole of a four-way playoff. Just to get to the playoff, he had to break the BGSU 54-hole record by shooting a 204 (67-69-68), which beat the old record by four strokes. Earlier in the fall, Drew Preston won his second career tournament by shooting 139 (70-69) at the John Piper Intercollegiate, becoming the third consecutive Falcon to win individual top honors at BGSU’s signature home event. Overall, the team recorded six top-10 and 13 top-20 nishes in the fall’s six events.

Winger has coached ve All-MAC selections, three MAC Sportsmanship Award winners, a two-time Academic All-MAC and NGCA All-America Scholar selection (Craig Pickeral, ‘04-’05), a three-time MAC Academic Honor Roll selection (Justin Gillham, ‘00-’02), and six tournament medalists (Heath Ziglar, John Powers, Jace Walker, Matt Schnieder, Drew Preston and Charlie Olson) who have combined to win nine tournaments, including ve since Sept., 2009.

Winger served as the MAC and Central Regional representative on the NCAA Advisory Committee from 2008 through 2010.

He and his wife Kate have two sons, Rhett and Nolan. The family resides in Bowling Green.
