The Willamette University women’s basketball team returns six players from last year and has added nine new players to the roster for the 2010-11 season. The Bearcats finished 4-21 overall and 2-14 in the Northwest Conference last season. The team will be led by senior guard Alex Zennan, who was an Honorable Mention All-NWC selection last year after averaging 14.6 points per game. She scored in double-digits in 21 games and posted a season-high 27 points on three different occasions. Seniors Erin Barclay and Shayna Glynn will help lead a Willamette team that includes seven freshmen and two transfer students. Kaileigh Westermann (Jr.), Maya McFaddin (Jr.) and Sophie Wilson (So.) also return for the Bearcats. Westermann finished the 2009-10 season averaging 6.5 points per game and 6.8 rebounds per game. She started in all 25 contests as a sophomore. McFaddin, who started in 21 games for the Bearcats last season, averaged 4.6 points and 3.6 rebounds per game. Wilson hopes to increase her scoring in her sophomore season for Willamette, after scoring five or more

points in four of WU’s last five games. Wilson played in all 25 games as a freshman. She gave WU depth at the guard position. Kelsey Mueller (Fr.) and Breanne Faehnrich (Fr.) will add depth at the guard positions for Willamette. At the forward position, the Bearcats have added six players. Transfers Dora Rabih (Jr.) and Andrea Harris (Jr.) will each see time at the forward position. Bearcat freshmen Rebecca Josephson, Tia Williams, Alexa Beeson and MacKenzie Lamson will all battle for time as forwards this year. Inside the paint, WU will look to freshman Alex Brunt-Pluta. Brunt-Pluta’s 6’0” frame will help the Bearcats increase their toughness near the basket. The Bearcats averaged 52.1 points per game under the direction of first year Head Coach Anne Lapray in 2009-10. Willamette shot 32.8% from the field and 62.3% from the free throw line last season. Willamette intends to greatly improve its defensive pressure and win the rebounding battle on a more consistent basis in the coming season. More overall depth should help the Bearcats in the 2010-11 season.

The Bearcats were picked to finish ninth in the Northwest Conference Preseason Poll, as voted on by the head coaches. George Fox University is the early favorite to repeat as NWC Champions.

PAGE 16PAGE 16 About Willamette

At Willamette, the student-faculty ratio of 10:1 allows faculty members to maintain ample office hours and serve as advisors. The professors are engaged in scholarly research, but they are primarily focused on teaching. The size of Willamette’s endowment is consistently among the largest in the Northwest and compares favorably on a national basis. The campus features 42 buildings, plus the Campus Quad and athletic fields. Ford Hall, the newest academic building, was completed in 2009 and houses Rhetoric and Media Studies, Computer Science, Math, Digital Art, Film Studies and Music Technology. Funds for the 46,000-square-foot building included an $8 million gift from Hallie Ford. Willamette benefits from its location across the street from the Oregon State Capitol. In particular, Willamette students are often chosen for internships with government organizations.

Willamette University is a top-ranked private liberal arts university located directly across the street from Oregon’s Capitol. It is home to 1,801 undergraduates and 805 graduate students in law, management and education. The campus is centered around the Mill Stream and is home to numerous trees and open green spaces. The beauty of the Pacific Northwest is reflected in Willamette’s 61- acre campus. Guided and inspired since 1842 by its motto, “Not unto ourselves alone are we born,” Willamette fosters community and values service. At Willamette, students can be locally involved in social and environmental issues or study abroad. Willamette is ranked third in the nation among colleges its size with more than 270 alumni having joined the Peace Corps since its inception in 1961. The National Wildlife Federation recognized WU as the nation’s higher education leader in sustainability efforts.

The clock tower and Jackson Plaza are located outside the Hatfield Library.

This accomplishment is a direct result of student-led initiatives, is further evidence that Willamette lives by its motto, producing responsible citizens of the world who are prepared to live with intention and integrity.

PAGE 18 Athletic Facilities

Cone Field House/Gordie James Court is the home court for the Willamette women’s basketball, men’s basketball and volleyball teams. The arena holds 2,500 fans, with plenty of seating on each side of the court. There is a quality sound system, plus tables for official timers, scorekeepers and statisticians, along with space for broadcast media. The floor in Cone Field House was named after Gordie James in 2010. James was the head coach for men’s basketball at Willamette from 1987-2009. Gordie James Court is connected to the Lestle J. Sparks Center, which houses offices for the Department of Athletics and the Department of Exercise Science. The building has a pool, handball and racquetball courts, a weight lifting and fitness center, classrooms, and locker rooms. The Women’s Basketball Team Room is located in the basement of Sparks Center. The team room has showers, a stereo system, and individual lockers for all of the players.

Conveniently located between the women’s team room and the gymnasium is the Burr Treatment Center. This facility is staffed by three full-time athletic trainers who evaluate and rehabilitate athletes. Willamette University soccer teams play home games at Sparks Field, an artificial turf facility next to the Sparks Center. The field is equipped with lights for night games and is one of the best college fields in the Pacific Northwest.

The floor in Cone Field House was officially named Gordie James Court in 2010.

To the west of the Sparks Center are six outdoor tennis courts. To the east is the softball complex. Facilities for football, baseball, cross country, and track and field are located two blocks south of campus, in Bush’s Pasture Park. Recent upgrades include lighting, a state-of-the-art scoreboard and a FieldTurf™ playing surface. The remaining two sports sites, off the main campus, are for golf and rowing.

The nine private colleges and universities in Oregon and Washington that form the Northwest Conference are building a reputation as one of the top NCAA Division III leagues in the nation. The NWC is nationally competitive in a broad spectrum of sports. Formed in 1926, the NWC is 84 years old and is one of the oldest conferences in the western United States. The NWC’s current members in Oregon are Willamette, George Fox, Linfield, Lewis and Clark, and Pacific. Members located in Washington are Pacific Lutheran, Puget Sound, Whitman and Whitworth. Charter members included Willamette, the College of Idaho, Linfield, Pacific and Puget Sound. Albany College was added in 1931, remained for seven years, and then returned in 1949 as Lewis & Clark College. Pacific Lutheran joined in 1965 and was followed by Whitworth in 1970. The College of Idaho withdrew from the conference in 1978.

Whitworth dropped out in 1984 and returned in 1988. Menlo joined in 2006 as a member in football only and dropped out in 2009. The NWC originally sponsored athletic competition for men’s sports only, but joined forces with the Women’s Conference of Independent Colleges in 1984 to form the Northwest Conference of Independent Colleges. The name was shortened back to the original Northwest Conference in 1998. Also in 1998, all nine NWC members shifted affiliation from the NAIA to the NCAA. Members knew the move would foster equity, sportsmanship and a genuine concern for all student-athletes.

The college experience is a time of learning and growth. For student-athletes in Division III, this happens in the classroom, through athletics and, ultimately, by earning an academic degree. The Division III experience provides student-athletes with the opportunity to participate in a competitive athletic environment, where they can push themselves to excellence. At Willamette, student-athletes are encouraged to pursue their full passions and find their potential through a comprehensive educational experience. Athletes in Division III do not receive financial aid related to athletic ability. Willamette and other NCAA Division III members encourage students to participate by maximizing the variety of athletic opportunities. Primary emphasis is placed on conference and regional play. WU often sends its teams to California, Idaho, Washington and Texas for in-region games. NCAA Division III members establish an environment with cultural diversity and gender equity among student-athletes and staff. In Division III, faculty and staff focus on the well-being of student-athletes.
