Meet the Jurors
2014 AIA winners fill us in on the visions that guide their architectural approaches in Hawai‘i.
“A vibrant mix of varied-height neighborhoods defined amongst the many blocks that encompass the Kaka‘ako community, a 21st century array of the Souk concept without the defining walls and entry gate.”
– MAURICE I. KONDO, AIA managing principal of INK Architects, on what he would hope to see in the development of the Kaka‘ako community on O‘ahu
“Design is a humanistic effort, and this quality guides our empathy toward respect for the environment, for wanting to achieve the quality of timelessness with an appropriate response for the setting and for how our client
will experience the buiding. We find inspiration from that empathy.”
— MARK DE REUS, AIA founding partner of de Reus Architects, on how he balances creating something fresh and contemporary while maintaining the integrity of the surrounding environment
“(It) needs to represent living simply and efficiently on the land. A new Hawaiian architecture should address the needs of Hawaiians in a new way … skipping over the resort or spa style so prevalent and directed at tourists.”
— CRAIG STEELY, AIA principal of Craig Steely Architecture, on what he feels architecture in Hawai‘i should represent
“Architecture can communicate the values of a community. I was in New York recently and clearly the message was about money, speed and individualism. I believe that our message would portray the spirit of the Islands: sharing, health and ‘ohana.”
— CHARLES KANESHIRO, AIA, LEED AP president and COO of Group 70 International, on how he marries ideas of social value with the refinement of design
DAVID A. CROTEAU, AIA, LEED APPresident of Flansburgh Architects, an award-winning, architectural planning and design firm, he led the firm to extend its national reputation as an educational and sustainable design leader to the global marketplace.
VINCE HAZEN, M.F.A. Director of the Honolulu Museum of Arts School, he was an associate professor of art at Chadron State College and has exhibited at the Honolulu Museum of Art, the Contemporary Museum and Mission Houses Museum.
MA RY KIM-JOHNSON, RIBAAssociate professor/practicum director at the University of Hawaii at Manoa School of Architecture, she has spent the last 20 years immersed in living and working in cultures across the Middle East and European nations.
DAVID A. MCKINLEY, FAIAPreviously the design partner in the Kirk Wallace McKinley firm, chairman of McKinley Architects and McKinley Gordon Architects in Seattle, his projects include financial, educational, civic-community and governmental institutions.
GLENN MASON, AIA Principal at Mason Architects, which specializes in the preservation of historic sites, research, museum and park structures, military work and residential projects, he helped found the Hawaii Architectural Foundation, for which he serves on the board.

ANCIENT AND MODERN ARE NOT TWO WORDS THAT OFTEN GO TOGETHER. Yet, they marry beautifully in the Kauhale Kai project to create a timeless, exquisite residence nestled on the Kohala Coast of Hawai‘i Island.
“This home has ancient sensibilities and a modern architectural language,” says architect Mark de Reus, AIA, founding partner of de Reus Architects. “There is a built-in respect for our Island predecessors.”
A strong organizational plan became the key to achieving this perfect balance. The de Reus team played symmetry off of asymmetry through the use of several modern pavilions, creating a village-like feel.
“The home is broken up into different hales,”
de Reus says. “It speaks to the ancient way Polynesians used to live. In beautiful climates we have the option to walk through a garden to the other side of the home rather than through a long hallway.”
The home as a village gives the homeowners the ability to live among the garden, the view and the home itself. Every aspect was carefully planned, inside, outside and in-between, down to the strategic placement of the palms and other plants.
“This ended up resulting in fascinating and really nice relationships between building, garden and spaces between buildings,” de Reus says. “It’s one of my favorite things to do architecturally.”

The home, designed village-like with separate buildings, or hales, provides full enjoyment of the natural setting and views and also enables good ventilation through the buildings.
“One of our goals is always to achieve timelessness, not to react to the trends of today.”

1. Materials were chosen for their contribution to the architectural concept and durability. The copper shingles add an elegance and tautness to the steep hipped pavilion roofs. Natural materials, such as ohia wood, cedar, travertine, coral and basalt stone can be found throughout the home.
2. “Architectural pools are another of my favorite details,” de Reus says. “When the pool is a unifying part of the plan, and alongside the living spaces, the tropical heat can be tamed in a meaningful way, and the air is cooled.”
3. “One of the Owner’s requests for the home was a glass dining pavilion that would float in a reflecting pool,” de Reus says.
4. “The home is a collection of subtle details,” de Reus says. “Every one is a layer that contributes to the whole.” One of his favorite details: Travertine stone integrated as a base with the steel columns supporting the trellis. The oculus cut above the wellspring allows the pool to reflect the beauty of the sky—day or night.
Looking to ancient Polynesia for inspiration to help achieve this was an easy decision for these homeowners, who have traveled frequently throughout the Pacific. For de Reus, who has done extensive work in this region and is an avid reader of anthropology, it was a perfect fit.
“One of our goals is always to achieve timelessness, not to react to the trends of today,” he says. “This project is very fulfilling for me because it honors our predecessors and it also enriches the architectural experience of the setting.”

GOOD ARCHITECTS CALL YOUR ATTENTION TO THE BEAUTY OF A BUILDING. But the great ones know that, when you’re in a place as rich with splendor as Hawai‘i, the best designs are those that let the environment shine. That’s just what Craig Steely, principal of Craig Steely Architecture, did with Lavaflow 7 on Hawai‘i Island. The project has minimal design, and that’s just the way he wanted it.
“There are no fluffy details,” he says. “There is very little building there, but what’s there makes a huge impact and informs how you experience the site.”
Part of that experience is taking it a step beyond the usual blurring lines of inside and outside.
“There’s not an indoor and an outdoor,” Steely
says. “It’s one space.” Accomplishing this on a lot located on five
acres of dense ohia forest was no easy task. Not only does it rain frequently on this side of the island, but the lot also faces directly into the trades. The home needed a structure that could stand the beating.
“That’s what led us to concrete,” Steely says. “It’s a fantastic, low-maintenance product, and if it’s done right, it only needs to be done once, and it will last forever.”
Steely gives credit to his team and contractor Michael Lynch, who cast the structure on-site. The team made daily judgments as to when concrete could be mixed and delivered. On site, they built wooden frames to hold the mixture. They’d pour it, dismantle the frame and then

Almost all of the materials for the home, from the concrete to the pine and eucalyptus, were sourced locally.
“We flipped it the other way. This has a huge header that allows it to span much farther and lets us hang the ceiling right underneath it.”

1. The home runs lengthwise to give each room spectacular vistas. “You have a master on one side, guest rooms on the other side,” Steely says. “One enclosed living space, one exterior living space, and that’s the whole building.”
2. Steely and his team used an unconventional method to accomplish a design that allows the homeowners to fully enjoy their surroundings while still remaining protected from the elements. “The typical way a building is you have a header and put the roof on top of that,” he says. “We flipped it the other way. This has a huge header that allows it to span much farther and lets us hang the ceiling right underneath it.”
3. Pocketing doors are incorporated all around the house. The fun-loving spirit of the homeowners can be found in tiny details. “It’s fun to be able to open a door and jump in a pool,” Steely says. “The house is fun and full of life.”
4. A 140-foot-long beam runs across the length of the building, supported by just three short walls, creating huge, uninterrupted spaces.
build again. In the end, the material has proven to be the key to bringing Steely’s vision to life.
The roof’s overhang provides a space that is open, yet protected, allowing the homeowners to fully enjoy their surroundings. Creating spaces that let the environment sing is perhaps Steely’s signature approach.
“There is something about how dynamic it is in Hawai‘i, with the sky and the ocean constantly around you and constantly changing,” he says. “The culture is part of the environment, too. It’s a big ‘ohana.”

The AIA Honolulu’s Annual Design Awards is Hawaii’s oldest program of its type—held annually since 1958. Built and unbuilt projects submitted by local AIA members are judged on their merit by a distinguished jury of AIA architects. All project types are eligible for submission by members—from small home renovations to multi-million dollar resorts. The Annual AIA Honolulu Design Awards Program provides an avenue for AIA Honolulu architects to be recognized by their peers for their effort and dedication to excellence in architectural design. In doing so, AIA Honolulu hopes to raise public consciousness, awareness of design excellence and the special role of AIA architects in the community.
