MESSAGE FROMMAYOR KIRK CALDWELL

One of the greatest strengths of the City and County of Honolulu comes from ourwillingness to accept people for who they are, not what they look like, where they come from, orhow they self-identify. The Aloha Spirit means that we treat others with dignity and respect, andthat we go out of our way to make people feel welcome.

The Honolulu Pride Festival is an annual celebration that radiates Honolulu’sinclusiveness to the rest of the world, and sends a message that everyone who comes here will betreated like friends. The LGBTQ community has experienced many challenges when it comes tosecuring civil rights, but in recent years the fight for equality has been affirmed by the highestcourt in the land, and a majority of Americans now believe that discrimination based on sexualorientation is not only illegal, but morally shameful.

It’s fitting that the Hawai‘i LGBT Legacy Foundation has chosen “I Am Pride” as the theme forthis year’s festival since it reflects a sense of openness that has become a trademark of our greatcity. It’s my pleasure to once again welcome the Honolulu Pride Festival to the Waikīkī Shell in the heart of Waikīkī on October 22, as well as the Honolulu Pride Parade along Kalākaua Avenue.

You will always have a friend and ally at Honolulu Hale as long as I am mayor, and Ilook forward to working with the LGBTQ community to make our city the best it can be.

Kirk Caldwell

2016 PRIDE GUIDE

The Hawaii LGBT Legacy Foundation is honored to sponsor Honolulu’s 26th annual Pride celebrations and events. Although this is only our second year taking over this awesome responsibility, it is our goal to make each year better and more exciting.

In 2015, just a few weeks after the US Supreme Court made same-sex marriage the law of the land, we were also thrilled to embark on a year of “firsts” for Hawaii. In addition to new youth programming and a week of celebrations, our first Pride parade and festival was a tremendous success. We had more participants than ever before and the parade was lead by active duty service members holding color flags. Also for the first time ever, the Military Honor Guard and the US Navy Marching Band participated in Honolulu’s LGBT parade. We have certainly come a long way.

So, what’s in store for 2016? A lot! First, we will be blanketing Waikiki with over 160 10’ rainbow banners for a two-week period. Can you say, “Gay, Gay, Gay, Gay…and more Gay!!!” Next, we have expanded upon the list of sponsored events including National Coming Out Day at the UH Manoa campus, two fundraiser fashion shows at Bloomindales and Urban Outfitters and not-to-be missed parties and happenings all over town. Please see the Community Calendar on our web site for specific events in October and throughout the year. Finally, the parade itself is expected to have even more participants this year and the festival will be at a new location at the back of the Shell on the area know as, “The Greens”. This year there will also be two stages with live entertainment, a broader variety of foods and adult beverages.

All of your Foundation’s projects including The Center in Waikiki, Honolulu Pride™, Big Island Pride, educational, social, athletic and cultural events would not be possible without the hard work and dedication of our all volunteer Board, our extremely generous donors, corporate partners and the community as a whole. We wish to thank everyone for the tremendous amount of love and support that allows us to accomplish our Mission.

Much aloha,

David S. Brustein, Esq., Chair
