SUBSIDY CUT: HEAT NOW ON THE WORKING CLASS

Laborers share angst and disappointment at the government decisionMuhammad Azam/DTNNManama

The subsidy cut on meat, which is to be implemented

from September 1, is seemingly going to affect adversely the expatriate working class and small restaurants. However, the aristocrats and the big restaurants will be least affected by this decision.

The Minister of Industry and Commerce, Zayed bin Rashid Al Zayani, had confirmed a day earlier that meat subsidiy would be stripped from September 1 to revitalize the commercial movement in the Kingdom and to boost the import of live and chilled meat.

The Parliamentary Committee working on the issue of “redirecting the benefits of subsidy to Bahraini nationals only” could not reach a consensus yesterday also.

Meanwhile, Shura Council Member Bassam Ismael Ebrahim and the member of the Finance Committee in Shura Council said that they were keen to meet the government committee once again before the enforcement of the decision.

He said that the subsidy issue was a very hot one and they really wanted to know how the government was going to do it. “We are looking forward to the second meeting to trace the real facts and figures on the issue,” he said. “We also want to know its economic, social and the political impacts at a

larger scale.” The vast majority of the

customers of the big restaurants are least bothered by the hike in prices.

Manager of a big restaurant in Amwaj commented that the subsidies cut on meat would not affect them at all. “Nobody here orders after checking the price. Maybe, four per cent of our customers look at the prices.”

The price of the subsidized meat is one dinar per kilogram now. After the subsidy is lifted it will become almost BD2.5/kg or BD3/kg.

Currently, the price of a meat dish per plate is about one dinar and is affordable for the common worker. But after September 1, the price per plate will exceed BD2. It would not be possible for the common man to eat meat in the restaurants then.

Lifting of the subsidies will be a blessing in disguise for the importers of Pakistani and Indian meat as they are better in quality than the subsidized

Australian meat. When the difference in prices

does not remain a considerable factor, then majority of the people would not prefer the Australian meat. As a result the market of Pakistani and Indian meat can flourish.

The working class who is cooking food at home can afford meat more than four times a week now, but after September 1, it will be difficult for them to do so even twice a month.

Generally it is the impression among the labourers that they can eat anything they like as the food items are subsidised in Bahrain.

Haji Saeed, an expat mason, said that the poor man would be done for. “How can a poor man eat meat at the price of BD3/kg?” he queried.

Tariq, another mason from Pakistan, said that now they could spend their month in shared accommodation for BD30. “But after the subsidies on water and electricity are also lifted the monthly expenditure

is expected to increase by BD60 to BD70.”

“The monthly salary of a labourer is almost BD70 and after overtime he touches the figure of BD100 while the salary of a mason is BD100 and he earns BD150 after availing overtime. When no money is saved, what will be left for the poor worker to do here?” he lamented. “If the salary of a worker is increased to at least BD150 and that of the mason to BD200, they can survive.”

Naseer, a worker from Pakistan, said they could live without meat but not without saving. According to him, if they could not save anything after the subsidy support is lifted, they would not like to live in Bahrain anymore.

“What I can imagine is that the disparity of income among

the workers in Pakistan and in Bahrain is going to be naught. If prosperity does not follow,

then what is the use of coming to Bahrain leaving our homes?” Naseer asked.

The price of the subsidized meat is one dinar per kilogram now.

After the subsidies are lifted it will become almost BD2.5/kg or BD3/kg.

DUAL FIRE ACCIDENTS IN KINGDOM, TRAGEDY AVERTED

House of ex-Ambassador and a cold store damaged in separate fire mishapsMuhamed Thasleem/DTNNManama

Two major fire accidents occurred

in two different areas in the Kingdom yesterday. However, no casualties were reported in both the incidents. In the first incident, the house of former Ambassador of Bahrain to Jordan and Iraq, Abdul Azeez Al Hassan, nearly gutted in a fire that broke out around 3 pm yesterday. The gravity of the damage is not yet ascertained.

The cause of the fire accident is suspected to be an electric short circuit from the exhaust fan. It is said that a spark caused the gas cylinder to burst, which in turn led

to the inferno. At the time of the incident Azeez and his family members were resting in the hosue. A car parked outside the gate of the house was also partially damaged. Four units of Civil Defense rushed to the spot and doused the fire.

In another incident, a cold store near Awal Cinema caught fire yesterday afternoon. The fire is suspected to be the result of a short circuit in the cold store.

The timely action of Civil Defense Force could bring the fire under control. According to sources, they required three units to extinguish the fire. The loss to the property due to the fire is still yet to be estimated.

A speeding vehicle reportedly hit the victim

ASIAN KILLED IN HORRIFIC CRASH

Narendra Modi’s two-day visit to UAE, which started yesterday, is special not only because it is the first ever

Indian Prime Minister’s visit, in over 34 years, but also because it boosts the morale of 2.6 million Indians residing in UAE.

It is unfortunate that India’s top leadership had largely neglected visiting the Arabian Gulf countries on a regular basis.

“Indians in the UAE account for roughly US$15 billon (Dh55bn) in annual remittances to India”, if we go by Prime Minister Modi’s words to the UAE media , ahead of his visit.

And according to government figures, quoted by the same newspaper, bilateral trade between the two countries in 2014-15 stood at roughly $60bn, even though it was down from a record high of $75.5bn in 2012-13.

Last year alone, UAE imported nearly $33bn in Indian merchandise. And, therefore, UAE-India relations, and the NRI (Non Resident Indian) relations should not be taken lightly.

I recall an interesting interaction I had had with Mr Modi in January this year on the side-lines of ‘Pravasi Bharatiya Divas 2014’ which means ‘The Day of the Overseas Indians’ that is commemorated on 9 January every year.

In this annual event of the Indian government, marking the contribution of Overseas Indian community to the development of India, awards are given to people from the Indian diaspora.

As one of the former recipients of Pravasi Bharatiya Samman, the highest civilian award given to overseas Indians, I was privileged to be a part of a small luncheon meeting that the new Prime Minister had had with a few former awardees .

During the event, I asked Mr. Modi to visit the Arabian Gulf just like he had been visiting several other countries since his election.

He joked saying, “You must give me some more time, because already people are making fun of my travels, calling me a ‘Pravasi Prime Minister’ (Overseas Prime Minister)!

He had visited over 25 countries since his election in May 2014, including USA, Australia, Brazil , Russia, Singapore and Japan but this is his first trip to the Arab world. The foreign investments in India, and the business joint ventures and mega projects that followed his visits, are truly remarkable.

On an earlier occasion too, I had met him when he was the Chief Minister of the Indian State of Gujarat, and was amazed at his progressive outlook during the talks.

Among Mr Modi’s top priorities now in UAE, we are told, will be to seek investment from the UAE, whose sovereign wealth fund reserves are estimated to be roughly $800bn.

Investment and Security are top on the visit-agenda. Investments not only from Arabs, but from the rich Indians of UAE, can give a new impetus to India’s economy.

When you consider the fact that USA, Saudi Arabia and UAE are the top three countries whose migrant workers send remittances to their home countries; and also, when you consider that India is the number-one country receiving the highest remittances that any country receives from abroad, you can understand the huge importance we must attach to this visit.

Also, as it is largely believed that some of the Indian mafia, with connections to terrorists, often use the cities in the Arab world to escape to, the security issue must be a priority too.

I will be in Dubai listening to Modi, this evening , and am looking forward to a great time.

But, most importantly, the world is listening to the rising voice of this great Indian leader who, obviously, does not believe in resting on his laurels.

An Asian man’s body was cut into pieces following

a horrific accident in Janabiya yesterday. The 31-year-old victim was reportedly hit by a vehicle, which was allegedly of high speed. Witnesses at the scene reported hearing “a loud bang” before seeing horrific sight of the man’s organs scattered on the road.

It was alleged that the

incident occurred when the victim tried to disembark his truck after parking it in the emergency lane in the village of Janabiya, just few hundreds of metres away from King Fahad Causeway.

The car which crashed him was occupied by a Gulf citizen who is said to have fled the scene, before he came back and handed himself to police. The accident caused heavy congestion before police arrived at the scene. Blood scattered in the accident scene

Road signs robbery: jail term upheldDT News NetworkManama

Three Asian men involved in a theft case have had

their jail terms upheld. They were sentenced earlier to three months behind bars after the High Criminal Court found them guilty of stealing road signs. The accused are said to have sold the stolen items to a scrapyard.

A fourth defendant, who was serving in the scrapyard, was also captured for accepting to buy the items despite knowing that they were public properties.

Police recovered the stolen items following a tip-off to Hamad Town Police Station, following which the defendants were nabbed.

The first, second and third defendants are said to have been working in a cleaning company, and removed the stolen items during their working hours.

The first defendant, a Bangladeshi citizen aged 41, said that he agreed with his colleagues to steal the signs and sell them.

“On the first day, we

purloined five traffic signs and sold them to a scrapyard in Sanad for BD25.

Next day we stole eight items

and sold them for BD30,” he added. The fourth defendant was handed down one month in jail, and he opted against challenging the initial verdict. All the defendants were earlier ordered to be deported once they complete their jail terms, and this was also confirmed by the High Criminal Appeals Court.

More than 60,000 residents of Bahrain belonging

to different nationalities, religions and political affiliations have signed a declaration pledging loyalty to Bahrain’s leadership.

They affirmed their loyalty to Bahrain and denounced Iranian intervention in Bahrain’s internal affairs in a campaign by Bahrain Association for Religious Coexistence and Tolerance. The campaign is being held from August 7 to 21.

Noting that the campaign was a huge success, Chairman of the Association Yousif Buzaboon said, “It was about manifesting the world about the strength of unity in Bahrain.”

He added that the signatures would be sent to HM the King as well as the United Nations.

Numerous mosques, churches, temples and various public places were utilized to receive the signatures. “Community leaders and religious leaders accepted our idea. They allowed us to set up centres in the religious buildings and community centres,” Buzaboon explained.

“The response from the people was fantastic. They were so eager to sign the declaration. In fact, I was flabbergasted to know how passionate expatriates were for the Kingdom. They were just enthusiastic for Bahrain

as much as the Bahrainis. We covered all areas equally,” said an elated Buzaboon. “There are only a small percentage of people, who cause nuisance. Majority of people in Bahrain are peace loving.”

The declaration is a 90-word

document titled ‘Loyalty to His Majesty The King’. The excerpts from the declaration stated: “Based on our patriotic responsibility and in assurance of our refusal to the interference in the Kingdom’s internal affairs by Iran, we

hereby proudly announce our full support and loyalty to the wise political Bahraini leadership. We do hereby announce our full loyalty to His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa to fulfill our duties with dedication and loyalty.”

A plan to set up a museum retracing the history of

the iconic American Mission Hospital (AMH) has been unveiled yesterday.

AMH Chief Executive Officer and Chief Medical Officer Dr. George Cheriyan announced the scheme, of which the idea was initiated by His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa.

Dr. Cheriyan hailed the royal proposal, which he said, reflected HM the King’s keenness on conserving the long-standing history of the hospital and the pioneering role it played in providing health services to successive

generations in Bahrain. The planned museum will showcase a rare collection of American Mission Hospital (AMH) collectibles, documents

and photos that highlight the dedicated efforts in ensuring healthcare in Bahrain over more than a century. Dr. Cheriyan said that coordination with

Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities (BACA) is underway to get approval for the required technical standards for such projects. In

a statement to health website KalamSaha, he said that the planned museum would hopefully be housed at the old AHM building in Manama.

He paid tribute to HM the King, hailing the continuous royal support for the hospital to assume its responsibility towards the community and provide high-quality healthcare.

He stressed HM the King’s keenness on expanding AMH healthcare services to cover the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) member states, which reflects royal trust in the hospital’s pivotal role.

“The American Mission Hospital is the only health establishment to take part in the three-day Island Classic, regularly held by the Royal Golf Club”, he said.

He further added that all the proceeds of the annual charity tournament will go towards supporting the hospital.

City Centre launches traffic awareness campaign

DT News NetworkManama

City Centre Bahrain, the largest shopping, leisure

and entertainment destination in Bahrain, launched ‘Park Right’, a campaign aiming to raise awareness on responsible parking.

Following the installation of a new and innovative parking guidance system at City Centre Bahrain, which allows visitors to easily find parking spaces and to locate their vehicle after a visit, the lifestyle destination has also launched the hashtag campaign #Park_Right. The

campaign will raise awareness on the importance of parking in the right spots and in the right way.

‘Park Right’ encourages visitors to park in the correct designated areas; for instance regular visitors can use regular spaces while disabled visitors can use the reserved parking spaces, which are generally located closer to the mall entrances.

Additionally, the campaign will raise awareness on the need to park in the right way: between the delimitation lines, in order to avoid using two parking spaces.

On selected days, Park Right

volunteers from the Ministry of Social Development will approach drivers who parked correctly inside the lines and using the right designated spot, and will surprise them with a treat.

“We would like to thank the Ministry of Social Development for their support in this initiative and thank all volunteers who participated in the campaign. As part of Majid Al Futtaim’s vision to create great moments for everyone, everyday, ,” said Duaij Khalifa Al Rumaihi, Senior Mall Manager for City Centre Bahrain.

DT News held an exclusive interview with Shailesh

Dash, Founder, CEO and Board Member, Al Masah Capital. A veteran of the MENA alternative investments sector, Shailesh has over 20 years of alternative investment experience.

How do you see the valua-tion in the GCC region stock market? Is it on the higher side?

The valuations depend on which country you are looking at; UAE’s PE of 11.8 looks relatively cheap compared to Saudi’s 16.4 or Kuwait’s 15.2. Dig a little deeper and Abu Dhabi’s 10.7 or Egypt’s 9.9 look even more attractive. Region wise, the composite PE of 14.8 is still better compared to US and European markets with multiples of 15.7 and 22 respectively although emerging markets with 12.37 look slightly better than regional markets at this stage.

How do you compare the stock -market liquidity in this region to global stand-ards? What can be done to improve the situation?

Liquidity still fares very badly versus global averages. Local markets still require more years of consistent development in market breadth and depth before they can start properly comparing to global liquidity levels.

A strong, sustainable IPO pipeline that focuses on the

sectors that are driving the regional economy (tourism, aviation, retail etc) is the best way to generate better liquidity.

How do you see the impact of price decline in oil? What is triggering this price fall – structural shift towards solar energy, nuclear energy and the likes OR is it just a multi-year supply glut?

The fundamentals remain the same: the oil market is currently oversupplied; Saudi/OPEC made a conscious decision to maintain output and preserve market share in the face of rising US shale production. The conventional thinking at that time was that lower oil price will not only slow shale production, but a lengthy period of low oil price will push back the shale technological advantage by a few years. And with rising demand from China and recovering US and European economies, oil price will resume its upward price and OPEC will maintain its market share. A few things have changed since then: (a) shale technology is proving more

resilient at lower oil prices meaning shale production is increasing rather than reducing (b) the rate of global economic growth, especially in China, is not creating enough demand to match the oversupplied market and (c) the potential Iran nuclear deal will further deteriorate the demand/supply picture.

How do you view the pri-vate equity players in the region? Are the practices followed in line with global standards? What sets your company apart? What is the USP?

Regional Private Equity is still at a nascent stage in the Mena region with very few fund managers with an established track record and very few players with a significant exit track record who have completed the whole investment cycle. The practices followed are very similar to the Global players. I think it’s the team, the way we do business and the way we structure our products, which sets us apart in the industry. Our USP is sector focus and our market edge is the innovative and entrepreneurial approach to our investment and operational strategies.

What is the normal time

period for which your com-pany makes investments? What is the targeted return on an annual basis? What variation can be expected and has been observed in the past years, comparing the expected return and the actual?

The investment period varies between 3-4yrs and the targeted returns are IRR of more than 25 per cent and 3x times of return multiple. We don’t expect any change in the return variations in the near future as regional markets continue to offer exciting opportunities and a good fund manager with specialized regional knowledge will continue to cherry pick the best deals that offer above market average returns.

How do you view the glob-al economy? Do you see a threat of deleveraging? If not, how positive you are about the global economy?

The global economy is going through many changes and deleveraging has been happening in different ways at different stages. But the pace for the same needs to be measured so that it does not damage the slow growth, which the various world economies have seen in recent times.

Global economy and capital markets will remain challenging for the next few years and a lot would depend on the regulators and Central Banks and monetary agencies and their policies. But these challenges will open up various opportunities for the Asset management and Private Equity industries in particular.

What made you successful in this field? Where did you start you career? Who inspired you? And, what is

your advice to youngsters attracted to this industry?

Vision, strategy, my team and hard work are the reasons behind our success in this field. I started my career in a boutique investment advisory firm in New Delhi. Like many in my field I have been influenced in my work by Warren Buffet. My advice to youngsters is that there is no substitute to hard work and experience and both are very important to be successful in the PE industry.

As part of the Jaguar Design XE

Competition which took place earlier this year, Jaguar MENA took the winners on a once in a lifetime trip to the United Kingdom for an unforgettable Jaguar experience at the Jaguar Land Rover Global Headquarters. Developed to challenge university students to ‘unleash their creativity’ by designing their own piece of art inspired by the stunning Jaguar XE, the Design XE competition resulted in five winners who were selected

based on their artwork creativity, technique and potential as aspiring artists and designers from the region.

A visit to the Jaguar

Heritage Museum in Gaydon kicked off the trip as the winners got a closer look at the British brand’s unique collection of beautiful heritage

vehicles. Travelling in a fleet of Jaguar vehicles throughout the UK, the winners experienced the stunning performance, class-leading design and innovative technology that Jaguar vehicles offer. The trip also offered an exclusive insight into the level of craftsmanship, design and innovation at the heart of the brand.

Given a rare chance to go behind closed doors, the

artists also visited the Jaguar Design Studio and the Jaguar Factory in Solihull, spending quality time with the Jaguar Design Team and engineers.

DT News- Since when have you been riding a bike?Brinda- I started riding bikes from a very early age, it was a childhood passion, starting to take shape since I was nine years old.

DT News- Was it something you had a liking to from the start or did the interest arise from a certain incident or person?Brinda- My father was the main inspiration since my childhood. He is a biker and that’s how I got an up-close look into the world of riding bikes. It had intrigued me from

day one.

DT News- Considered to be more of a male-dominated sector,

how does it feel to become a Harley rider and what kind of message do you wish to pass onto others who have

unique interests and hobbies? How can they break the conventional barriers to live out their passion fully?Brinda- I feel the mindset is definitely changing as more and more women

are fulfilling their passion as I

h a v e

fulfilled mine. My advice is that if you have a dream and goal in life, just follow it even if it is taking a lot of time and patience, victory will be yours soon.

DT News- How do you feel the acceptance parameter grown in the Middle Eastern region for women to become hardcore motorbike riders? Is it at par with the international scenario or do we still have a long way to go?Brinda- I think women riders in the Middle Eastern region have been increasingly steadily. And while I feel we are not yet par with the international motor biking scenario, we are heading in the right direction. DT News- What were the major setbacks you had to face and how supportive have been your family and peers?Brinda- I never had any major setbacks as my parents and husband always encouraged me to follow my passion for bike riding.

DT News- Have you ever faced criticism for being a bike rider? Does factors like safety issues make you reconsider your passion?Brinda- Actually I haven’t really faced any criticism, but when it comes to safety, I always try to make sure that I concentrate and follow the rules while I’m riding.

DT News- How does it feel to ride a car compared to a Harley? Brinda-The freedom of movement in a bike is so much more and better. It’s an experience that is so invigorating.

What is generally deemed as the ‘art of manliness’ isn’t entirely a bona fide claim. Sure, when

following the mainstream view, motorbikes are visualized with ruggedly men, stripped in leather jackets, pants and a bandana of machoness. But it isn’t really about the stereotyped image associated with the machine, infact it’s the visceral experience that comes with riding the hog.

While the West is seeing and accepting the female

take on the two-wheel heavy bike, where does Bahrain stand? Interestingly we have our share of women who like to take these bad boys on the road too. Meet ‘Brinda Gurumurthy’, who shares with us how riding her motorbike, provides her with a contemplative solitude, an identity that thrills –letting her live life to the fullest and accepting the sharp corners and near misses, that comes with it. Plus, vrooming a Harley-Davidson on the roads of Bahrain is just plain cool.

Marty McFly gave a glimpse on how a levitating hoverboard works, in the movie released in the eighties

Levitating! Lexus unveils the hoverboard Ross checks out the levitating

hoverboard

In the popular ‘Back to The Future’ film series; we see how Marty McFly

in October 2015, in an attempt to outrun a gang of cyborgian thugs, hops onto a hoverboard for the first time ever. Looks like Back to the Future Part II wasn’t that far off about 2015 after all, as luxury automotive brand Lexus has partnered with world-leading experts in super conductive technology to create one of the most advanced Hoverboards ever developed.

The Lexus Hoverboard project began 18 months ago through collaboration with a team of scientists from IFW Dresden and evico GmbH, who specialize in magnetic levitation technology. Following extensive testing with pro skateboarder and hoverboard test rider Ross McGouran, in Dresden, Germany, the team were determined to push the hoverboard to its limits and conduct further tests within dynamic surroundings.

Moving across the water

“I’ve spent 20 years skateboarding, but without friction it feels like I’ve had to learn a whole new skill, particularly in the stance and balance in order to ride the hoverboard. It’s a whole new experience,” said Ross. Since the Lexus Hoverboard was unveiled in June, testing has been carried out in a specially constructed hoverpark, combining elements from skate culture with technology within its architecture. Up to 200 meters of magnetic track was transported to Barcelona from the Dresden facility to lay beneath the hoverpark surface in order to create a dynamic test, offering Lexus the

opportunity to demonstrate tricks no skateboard could ever perform, like travelling across water.

The Lexus Hoverboard technology features two “cryostats” — reservoirs in which superconducting material are kept at -197 degrees through immersion in liquid nitrogen. The board is then placed above a track that contains permanent magnets. Dr. Oliver de Hass, evico CEO, said: “The magnetic field from the track is effectively ‘frozen’ into the superconductors in the board, maintaining the distance between the board and the track — essentially keeping the board hovering. This force is strong enough to allow the rider to stand and even jump on the board.”

Mark Templin, Executive Vice President at Lexus International, said: “Embarking on this project, we set out to push the boundaries of technology, design and innovation to make the impossible possible. We’ve experienced the highs and lows and have overcome a few challenges, but through mutual determination we have created a demonstration of our philosophy in design and technology to create Amazing in Motion.”

YOUR STAR TODAY

There is a slow, lethargic pace to the day that might

leave you feeling frustrated. It may seem as if things are not progress-ing as fast as you would like. Don’t get seduced by the thought everything needs to be done faster. This is a great time to focus on quality and efficiency.

ARIES20th March - 20th April

Get your life in order today. Take off the mask you have been

wearing and look at yourself in the mirror. Make sure you like who you see. Today is a good day to put the frivol-ity aside and concentrate on what you need to get accomplished. Attend to your duties and plan wisely for the future.

LEO 20th July - 20th Aug

Your playful attitude, will be a welcome addition to the so-

ber, restrictive tone of the day. On the other hand, it may behoove you to join in with the seriousness in order to ac-complish what you need to get done. The choice is up to you; however, you would probably be wise to spend this day.

SAGITTARIUS 20th Nov - 20th Dec

This is a terrific day for you to accomplish a lot. You may be

feeling restricted in your emo-tions, but don’t worry about it. If the time doesn’t feel right to engage in deep con-versation, than don’t push it. Instead, con-centrate on the things that you need to done on a personal and professional level.

TAURUS 20th April - 20th May

You will find yourself fitting in perfectly with just about every sit-

uation you encounter today. Things are going well for you, so take advantage of the energy at hand. You will find that you can accomplish a lot with very little effort. If something needs to be done meticulously and efficiently, you are the one for the job.

VIRGO20th Aug - 20th Sept

This is a terrific day for you, in which you will feel a greater

sense of appreciation and respect for the people around you. The plan-ning and hard work that you have con-tributed recently is finally paying off. You will find that your emotions are under control and your thoughts crystal clear.

CAPRICORN 20th Dec - 20th Jan

Slow down the pace a bit to-day, and do some planning.

There is a steady, grounded mood to the day that will help you bring your thoughts and your actions down to Earth. The wind may not be blowing in your sails as powerfully as you like, but you can actually use this to your advantage.

GEMINI 20th May - 20th June

Don’t expect a huge rise out of peo-ple today even if you tell the funni-

est jokes you have. Others are likely to be reserved and uptight, especially when it comes to their emotions. For the most part, the day’s forecast calls for conservative skies and a slight chance of grumpiness.

LIBRA 20th Sep - 20th Oct

There is a restrictive, sober tone to the day that may tend

to wear you down. The trick to working this energy to your advantage, however, is to adjust your game plan to fit the mood of the day. Take care of mun-dane chores and small obstacles.Follow through with your short-term goals.

AQUARIUS 20th Jan - 20th Feb

There is a greater call for you to focus on tangible items today.

Your emotions are likely to feel a bit restricted, but you will find comfort in beautiful and luxurious surroundings. Don’t be surprised if people are a bit more criti-cal than usual. What they intend as helpful words may come across to you as hurtful.

CANCER 20th June - 20th July

You will be blessed with a more level head than usual today, so

take this opportunity to make ra-tional decisions about the most intense is-sues on the table. Stay grounded and con-centrate on what you need to do. Don’t get caught up in the usual emotional drama.

SCORPIO 20th Oct - 20th Nov

Come down from the clouds. It is important for you to connect

with what is going on down here on Earth. It could be that you are miss-ing your target simply because you failed to take certain details into account that are actually quite obvious to everyone else. At-tend to projects that require your attention.

AUSCHWITZ’S FORBIDDEN LOVE

It was the most forbidden love of them all under the

rule of the Nazis. As soon as Hitler took

power in 1933, regime bureaucrats began drawing up the grotesque Nuremberg Laws banning relationships between ‘Aryans’ and Jews.

But such relationships DID exist in the Third Reich - even between its most monstrous servants and their victims.

As controversy swirls around a new novel by Kate Breslin, branded ‘offensive and upsetting’ because it centres on the fictional romance between an SS concentration camp commandant and a prisoner the truth about complex human relationships forged in terrible times cannot be denied.

The book, For Such a Time, portrays a warped love in a warped place.

This was the place where people did anything to survive, anything to avoid ‘selections’ that would mean a one-way trip to the gas chambers.

Helena Citronova was among them and saved her life and those of her family by relenting to the affections of a hated SS guard.

Although she slept with her saviour, Wunsch, and admitted that she eventually harboured deep feelings of love for him, Helena’s forbidden relationship was only forged because she wanted to stay alive in the most terrible place on earth.

A Jew from Slovakia, she worked in the giant warehouse at the camp called ‘Canada’ where the belongings of the doomed were sorted before they were shipped back to Berlin to fuel the Nazi war effort.

There she met Wunsch in 1942. Their relationship was portrayed by the American PBS network in a programme about the death camp in which 1.2million people were liquidated.

‘The relationship between SS man Franz Wunsch

and Jewish woman Helena Citronova is certainly one of shock,’ it said.

‘Had it not been for the fateful moment when Helena was asked to sing for Wunsch’s birthday, she wouldn’t have survived. She

had been sentenced to death earlier that day.’

Wunsch sent her biscuits, passed her notes saying ‘Love - I fell in love with you’.

He even saved her sister

Rozinka from certain death.‘I thought I’d rather be

dead than be involved with an SS man. For a long time afterwards there was just hatred. I couldn’t even look at him.’

But she admitted that her feelings for Wunsch changed

over time. Helena learned that they were to be sent to the gas chamber and her SS admirer tried to help them.

Helena went on: ‘So he said to me, “Tell me quickly what your sister’s name is before I’m too late.” So I said, “You won’t be able to. She came with two little children.”

‘He replied, “Children, that’s different. Children can’t live here.” So he ran to the crematorium and found my sister.’

Helena and her sister survived Auschwitz, and although her relationship with Wunsch never developed further, she testified on his behalf, years later at his war crimes trial.

Helena, who died in 2005, said in an interview with UK filmmaker Laurence Rees: ‘There were moments where I forgot that I was a Jew and that he was not a Jew and, honestly, in the end I loved him.

‘When I was young, I was preoccupied and didn’t deal with my past. Now the memories are returning to me, like a boomerang.’

‘The nature of the relationship and its location suggest that, from Helena’s point of view, it was played out on the border between emotional attachments; she admits that toward the end of the war she had begun to harbor feelings for him.

An Austrian by birth, Wunsch, who died six years ago, was described at his trial by camp survivors as a natural

‘Jew Hater’ who sometimes served on the infamous ‘ramp’ - selecting inmates who arrived on trains from all over occupied Europe to live or die. At the trial in Vienna in 1972 the court heard how he was a brute to prisoners, beating men and women alike.

‘Desire changed my brutal behaviour, he said. ‘I fell in love with Helena Citronova and that changed me. I changed into another person because of her influence.’

Despite what the judge called ‘an overwhelming evidence of guilt’ in the participation of mass murder, he was acquitted of all charges due to the statute of limitations governing war crimes in Austria.

Helena and her sister spoke in favour of him at the trial.

Katherine Locke is a Jewish romance writer based in Philadelphia who has been vocal in her opposition to Breslin’s book.

She claims the novel is a poor retelling of the Old Testament Book of Esther, in which Hadassah, a Jewish girl also known as Esther, marries

the Persian king Ahasuerus in order to save her people from a genocide.

But Locke does not believe this makes Helena’s story any the less inspiring.

She said: ‘That this relationship happened in real life is not surprising but I still don’t know if it was consensual.

‘You cannot consent in that power dynamic. They [the SS guards] are still guys exterminating and killing millions of people.

‘We are talking about two very different stories from different perspectives.

‘But I don’t think it’s a common story and telling it using a non-Jewish voice [like Breslin does] and from a non-Jewish perspective is dangerous and it erases Jewish history. (Daily Mail)

The disturbing real-life story of Jewish death camp inmate Helena Citronova who saved her family from the gas chamber by falling in love with SS guard Franz Wunsch, has similar liaison to Kate Breslin’s new novel ‘For Such a Time’, but has been slated

EXCITING OFFERS AT FOUR SEASONS

Telco Operators and Service providers in Bahrain are under pressure to do two things – one is to respond faster to market

innovations and user demand and specifically around differentiation. Today as we know the average revenue per subscriber from voice is declining. So service providers have to rely on more innovative services in the data space and bundling offers to be able to attract more subscribers. The other area is the increased user demand for bandwidth and applications. This is forcing SPs to upgrade their networks and data centers. With declining budgets and margins, they have to do something different to maintain profitability and cut costs. They are finding Private Cloud and Software Defined Networks (SDN) to be the answer and are embarking on a journey to centralize & consolidate services. They have begun to adopt server virtualization, SDN and Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) technologies to reduce footprint of their architectures & networks

One of the major advantages of deploying SDN is that the management of all systems within the network has a centralised controller. This single plane of control acts as a decision point for the whole network as access can be granted to all equipment in the network, easing and speeding up the management process.

By centralising the control however, you also create a significant target for any malicious activity. For telecoms operators, making sure that this central controller plane isn’t comprised therefore needs to be a top priority. Without sufficient protection, the controllers could be compromised which would pose a significant threat to the network and the data being interacted with it.

Secondly, SDN poses challenge in terms of the roots of trust (RoT) that are used to validate control signals within the network. In a traditional infrastructure, it is possible to manage this verification process by locking software to specific pieces of hardware. With SDN this simply doesn’t work and it therefore raises a question of how to manage the roots of trust. The processes for this are still in development and it is likely to require collaboration from across the industry in order to agree on an appropriate mechanism.

Safeguarding customer data and applications with the Advent of Cloud

In a traditional network environment, internal data was protected by firewalls and security breaches were, relatively speaking, easy to identify. However, in a hybrid or cloud environment, potential threats and rising issues become much less visible.

The onus falls very much on the service providers to make sure they have rigorous processes and robust technologies in place to safeguard their customers’ data and application. Telecoms companies should therefore be building security measures into every layer of the network. Analytics is particularly important here. Operators should be automatically identifying any traffic abnormalities. Deviation from normal activity, such as peak-flows and behavioural changes, can often be a good indicator that there is an attack on the application layer or a break into the network.

Again, cross-industry collaboration will be very important here. Telecoms companies should be sharing data about threats they have encountered and new approaches to dealing with them. This pooling of knowledge will help the industry to adapt to emerging threats much faster, which is essential to protecting customers.

Industry Collaboration – Putting a Security Framework in placeUltimately, the move towards SDN will result in significant

security advantages for telecoms firms and their customers. SDN makes it possible to create very granular virtual networks and very secure multi-tenant environments. This is highly desirable from a security standpoint since it means that any malicious entity entering the network will only be able to access very limited internal resources.

However, there is no doubt that progress needs to be made in order for this to become a reality. Industry collaboration is absolutely essential in order to create workable roots of trust that are standardised and reliable. It would be great to see the industry working together across all levels to make sure that a robust, consistent security framework is put in place.

TERROR JOLTS PAKISTANMinister, 15 others killed

Monday, August 17, 201526

Shadi Khan

Two suicide attackers yesterday killed a

Pakistani provincial minister, who had campaigned against militants, and at least 15 other people, after detonating a bomb at a meeting the minister was attending.

“Punjab Home Minister Shuja Khanzada has embraced martyrdom,” said chief rescue official Mohammad Ashfaq.

Khanzada, 71, had been holding a meeting with local people who had come to express their condolences on the death of his cousin.

He was trapped with several others under the rubble after the blast brought down the roof of the building in the village of Shadi Khan in Attock district.

“There were two suicide bombers, one stood outside the boundary wall and the second one went inside and stood in front of the minister,” Mushtaq Sukhera, provincial police chief, said.

“The blast by the bomber standing outside ripped the wall which caused the roof to fall flat on the minister and people gathered there,” he said.

Sukhera added police were investigating whether the attacker inside the building detonated a bomb.

A police spokeswoman said that 16 people including the minister and two policemen were killed and 22 others were wounded in the attack, 70 kilometres (43 miles) northwest of Islamabad. Ehsanullah Ehsan, spokesman

for the hardline Jamaat ul Ahrar faction of the Tehreek e Taliban Pakistan (TTP) movement claimed responsibility for the attack on Twitter, saying it was revenge for the killing of a sectarian militant commander and others.

Khanzada, a retired army colonel, had been a member of the Punjab assembly since 2002 and an active member of

the Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz), the party of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.

The prime minister, along with President Mamnoon Hussain and army chief General Raheel Sharif condemned the attack and expressed their resolve to fight

terrorism. “Such dastardly coward attempts can’t dent our national resolve to eliminate the menace,” said army spokesman Major General Asim Bajwa in a statement.

“Khanzada Shaheed (martyr) was a bold officer whose sacrifice for the greater cause of cleansing Pakistan won’t go to waste.”

Punjab’s government announced a three-day mourning period in the province starting today.

Officials said there were up to 40 people in the compound when the suicide attack took place. The attack caused the entire roof slab to fall in one piece - complicating rescue efforts.

A specially-trained team of army rescuers with modern equipment was working with civilian rescuers to lift and cut sections of the fallen roof to reach the victims.

New Delhi

India summoned Pakistan’s envoy in New Delhi yesterday

to protest against civilian deaths in recent troop firings along their disputed border, hiking tensions ahead of talks between the nuclear-armed rivals.

Six civilians died on the weekend in troubled Indian Kashmir after firing and shelling by Pakistani troops from across the border, according to Indian police.

Another two civilians were killed in shelling by Indian soldiers into the Pakistani side of the disputed Himalayan region, according to a Pakistani official on Saturday.

“We lodged a protest, and conveyed our anger, at the unprovoked firing by Pakistani troops since August 8” including “the systematic targeting of our civilian populations”, an Indian foreign ministry statement said after the meeting.

Pakistan High Commissioner Abdul Basit sought to blame Indian troops for the uptick in firing incidents in recent months.

“There have been close to 70 ceasefire violations from this side of the LoC (Line of Control) and working boundary,” Basit told reporters outside the foreign ministry office in Delhi where he had been hauled in.

India and Pakistan often accuse each other of violating a 2003 ceasefire agreement along their de facto border known as the Line of Control (LoC) that divides Kashmir.

Firing and shelling between troops has occurred on an ‘almost’ daily basis for the past week along the LoC.

Pakistan’s ex-spymaster Hamid Gul dies aged 79Islamabad

Pakistan’s former spymaster Hamid Gul, who trained

Afghan resistance fighters against the Soviets and helped create the Taliban, has died at the age of 79.

Gul headed Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) agency between 1987-89 during the final years of the Soviet occupation of neighbouring Afghanistan.

But in retirement he was still seen as reflecting the mindset of Pakistan’s powerful military establishment and intelligence agency.Gul died late Saturday at the Combined Military Hospital in the scenic hill resort of Murree north of Islamabad after suffering a

brain haemorrhage, relatives said. Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif sent condolences to his family.

Following the Soviet withdrawal from Afghanistan in 1989, the country slid into anarchy. Taliban fighters trained in Pakistan gradually prised control from the Northern Alliance of commander Ahmad Shah Massoud, a national hero. During this period, Gul maintained contacts with both sides in an unofficial role as mediator.

Gul remained in the limelight after leaving the military and was popular among hardline Islamist groups for his strong views

about Pakistan’s arch-rival India and the United States.

India viewed him with deep suspicion for his alleged links to Kashmiri militants fighting New Delhi’s rule.

Washington worked with him during the 1980s but later lobbied for his inclusion on a UN list of international terrorists.

During an interview in June last year, Gul had said war would continue if Afghanistan signed a security pact allowing some 10,000 US-led troops to remain in the country in non-combat roles until 2016.

Gul also recalled his last visit to Afghanistan in August 2001, when he was

chief guest at the final parade organised by the Taliban government.

The administration was toppled by a US-led invasion later that year after failing to hand over Al Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden following the 9/11 attacks.

“Fear is no policy. Surrender is no option,” reads the home page of his website generalhamidgul.com.pk, which depicts Pakistan’s green and white national standard along with Gul’s photo in army uniform.

He was frequently quoted by both local and international media on issues related to Afghanistan and India.

Jayapura

Rescue teams were heading to the site of an air crash in

rugged eastern Indonesia after villagers found the wreckage of a passenger plane that went missing with 54 people aboard, officials said.

The plane operated by Indonesian carrier Trigana Air lost contact with air traffic control just before 3:00 pm (0600 GMT) yesterday after taking off from Jayapura, the capital of Papua province, the search and rescue agency said.

The ATR 42-300 twin-turboprop plane was carrying 44 adult passengers, five children and five crew on the flight, which was scheduled to take about 45 minutes, it said.

But, the plane disappeared about 10 minutes before reaching its destination Oksibil, a remote settlement in the mountains south of Jayapura, shortly after it asked permission to start descending to land.

Officials said initially that villagers in the Okbape district of Papua reported seeing a plane crash. The transport ministry later said local residents had found the wreckage.

“The plane has been found (by villagers). According to residents, the flight had crashed into a mountain,” said the transport ministry’s director-general of air transportation, Suprasetyo, who goes by one name.

Officials were still verifying

the information from local residents, he said. There was no information about whether anyone may have survived.

Search and rescue teams, police and the military would head to the site as soon as possible, said transport ministry spokesman J. A. Barata.

After the plane failed to land, Trigana Air sent another flight over the area to hunt for it but the aircraft failed to spot anything due to bad weather.

Captain Beni Sumaryanto, Trigana Air’s service director of operations, said that Oksibil was “a mountainous area where the weather is very unpredictable. It can suddenly turn foggy, dark and windy without warning.

“We strongly suspect it’s a weather issue. It is not overcapacity, as the plane could take 50 passengers.”

Barata said the weather in the area had been “very dark and cloudy”.

Washington

Democratic presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton

returned fire on Saturday at her Republican rival Jeb Bush’s claim that a “premature” US pullout from Iraq fuelled the rise of the Islamic State group.

Clinton served as secretary of state under President Barack Obama during the rise of the self-proclaimed Islamic State.

In 2002, while serving as a US senator from New York, Clinton voted in favour of authorizing the invasion of Iraq ordered by Bush’s brother and then-president George W. Bush. With the war dragging into a protracted, costly and unpopular conflict, she later called her decision a mistake.

“I find it somewhat curious that Jeb Bush is doubling down on defending his brother’s actions in Iraq,” Clinton said on the campaign trail in Iowa. “If he’s going to do that, he needs to present the entire picture,” she argued.

“And the entire picture as you know, includes the agreement that George W. Bush made with the (Nuri al-) Maliki government in Iraq that set the end of 2011 as the date to withdraw American troops.” On Tuesday, Jeb Bush blamed Clinton for allowing the brutal emergence of IS by withdrawing troops from Iraq too fast. “That premature withdrawal was the fatal error, creating the void that (Islamic State) moved in to fill,” he told

a crowd in California. “Rushing away from danger can be every bit as unwise as rushing into danger, and the costs have been grievous.”

Taking a political risk, Bush even suggested it might be

necessary to send more troops back to Iraq.

“Right now, we have around 3,500 soldiers and Marines in Iraq, and more may well be needed.” His remarks dredged up a bitter debate that has

long bubbled in Washington and that has tarnished his brother’s legacy. A wildly successful invasion of Baghdad was followed by a ham-fisted occupation that fueled brutal sectarian violence and left the

central government debilitated. In addition to being a point of contention between Republicans and Democrats, the conflict may have also cost Clinton the 2008 Democratic nomination to anti-war candidate Barack Obama.

Recent Air Disasters

“I am confident that I never sent or received any information that was classi-fied at the time it was sent and received”Hillary Clinton

Hillary Clinton sent and received a total of 62,320 emails during her 2009-2013 stint as top diplomat.

At the State D e p a r t m e n t ’ s request, she turned over what she has described as all of her official emails - 30,490, to be exact.

Hillary said the remaining 31,830 are personal records, and that her server was wiped clean after she provided paper copies of her official communications.

The State Department has already released 3,500 of them pub-licly.

The 3,577 Clinton emails released to date offer a glimpse into the operations of a large Clinton machinery.

Much of the email traffic addresses mundane person-nel matters or the forwarding of vari-ous press reports.

Fewer than 10 per-cent of the emails relate to Benghazi or to Clinton’s response to the September 11, 2012 terrorist attack.

A batch of 300 Benghazi-related emails was pub-licly released in May after they were provided to a congressional committee inves-tigating the terror attack.

Over 80 dead in Syria air raidsBeirut

Syrian government warplanes bombed a market

in a rebel-held town outside Damascus yesterday, killing at least 82 people in one of the bloodiest regime attacks in the country’s war.

The series of strikes on the town of Douma overwhelmed makeshift clinics, with bodies lying side-by-side on a bloodied floor as medics struggled to treated waves of wounded.

The head of the Syrian opposition National Coalition, Khaled Khoja, called the attacks as “massacre” and pledged they “will not go unpunished”.

The deaths came as the UN’s new humanitarian chief visited Syria for the first time since his appointment in May.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Britain-based monitoring group, said regime warplanes had carried out at least 10 strikes on Douma, most of them hitting a marketplace.

It said that at least 250 people were wounded, with civilians accounting for most of the dead, and the toll could rise further because many of the injured were in a serious condition.

At least six raids hit the market, with the others striking nearby in the centre of town.

Food for Thought S. African leaders meet as region faces food crisis

Monday, August 17, 201528

TOURISTS GO MISSING WHILE DIVING

Johannesburg

Leaders of 15 southern African countries will

gather for an annual summit today as the region grapples with serious food shortages that have left a record number of people needing aid.

A toxic mix of erratic rains, abnormally high temperatures and floods have wreaked havoc on farming, writing off the bulk of this year’s crop.

An estimated 27.4 million people out of the region’s combined population of 292 million - or nearly one in 10 people - will be depending on food handouts by the end of

the year. Yields of the staple corn have shrunk by up to 90 per cent in some countries of the 15-nation Southern African Development Community (SADC), a June report by the group said.

“Given the hazards faced, the number of food insecure people ... increased by 13pc (to) 27.4 million this year compared to 24.3 million for last year,” said the report.

But the leaders meeting in Botswana from today are not expected to launch a joint regional appeal for help.

“Instead, individual countries will do so,” said

Margaret Nyirenda, director of SADC’s Food, Agriculture and Natural Resources Division.

Malawi, Zimbabwe, Namibia and Botswana are among the worst-hit.

World Food Programme spokesman David Orr said Zimbabwe and Malawi were facing their “worst food security crisis” in a decade.

Zimbabwe, with a shortfall of 49pc, will need to import 700,000 tonnes of the staple corn to feed 1.5 million people.

The country’s Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa has already appealed for cash

from “development agencies and the private sector” to

ensure that the vulnerable are not “exposed to hunger and

starvation”. In Malawi floods earlier this year ravaged fields, killing 176 people.

Traditionally the third largest producer of maize in the region, this year it is being forced to import from neighbour Zambia.

According to official estimates, up to 2.8 million Malawians will need food relief from year end when the food shortages peak.

Meanwhile, a sharp decline in rainfall combined with a heatwave across Botswana have caused a dramatic 70pc drop in land under cultivation - and 90pc of the crop parched.

Four foreign tourists were missing after leaving for

a scuba diving trip in the waters off Indonesia’s island of Borneo, an official said yesterday.

The group of six, identified as five Italians and a Belgian, had headed out to Sangalaki island, a popular dive spot in East Kalimantan province, on Saturday, provincial search and rescue chief Hendra Sudirman said.

“Two Italians among them who went snorkelling were safe. But four others, comprising of

three Italians and a Belgian, who went diving were reported missing Saturday evening,” he said.

“We have sent out rescue boats to look for them in the water as well as comb the beaches and surrounding areas but so far, we have found no trace of them,” he said.

“The currents are strong and waves are up to 2.5 metres. We hope they have drifted to the smaller islands and are safe,” he added.

Sudirman said the authorities

are still investigating the case and searching for the missing tourists would be a priority.

State news agency Antara reported that a local guide accompanying the divers has been found safe and is being treated at a hospital.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi held talks yesterday

with Abu Dhabi’s crown prince on bolstering cooperation with the United Arab Emirates at the start of a two-day visit, state media said.

Modi is the first Indian Premier to visit the UAE in more than three decades, since Indira Gandhi came in 1981, and is due to address the country’s large India expat community in Dubai today.

Indians, who form the UAE’s largest expatriate community, account for about 30 percent of the country’s population of eight million, with many of them labourers who were behind the construction boom.

Yesterday, Modi and Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed al Nahyan discussed “cooperation between both countries and means of strengthening and developing it to achieve mutual strategic interests,” official WAM news agency reported.

Sheikh Mohammed hailed

India’s “distinguished and diverse relations” with his country “that serve economic, development, commercial, as well as cultural and political sectors,” WAM said.

Modi and his host agreed on the need to “build stronger ties”, it said. They also “condemned extremism, violence and terrorism in all its forms” and urged the international community to step up efforts “to achieve peace and security” across the region, WAM added.

The UAE is taking part in the US-led coalition against the radical Islamic State group that has seized parts of Syria and Iraq, and has also joined a Saudi-led coalition against Iran-backed rebels in Yemen.

An Iraqi parliamentary investigation found

ex-premier Nuri al Maliki and 35 others responsible for jihadists overrunning second city Mosul, in a report being sent for possible legal action, lawmakers said yesterday.

While various top commanders and political leaders have long been viewed as responsible for the Islamic State jihadist group’s disastrous takeover of the city, the report is the first time they have been named officially.

Investigative committee member MP Abdulrahim al Shammari said that Maliki, who was prime minister from 2006 until last year, was among those named, as did another member who declined to be identified.

The inclusion of Maliki’s name was a source of controversy on the committee, with his Dawa party pushing for it to be omitted.

The report detailing findings of the investigation, which has yet to be publicly released, has been presented to parliament

speaker Salim al Juburi, who said it would be sent to the prosecutor general for legal action.

“No one is above the law and the questioning of the people, and the judiciary will punish those” responsible, Juburi said in a statement.

IS launched a devastating offensive on June 9 last year, overrunning Mosul the next day and then sweeping through large areas north and west of Baghdad.

Multiple Iraqi divisions collapsed during the initial assault in the north, in some cases abandoning weapons and other equipment the jihadists then used to further their drive.

Martin Guptill hit 60 as New Zealand earned

a share of the series by winning the second Twenty

20 international against South Africa by 32 runs at SuperSport Park on Sunday.

New Zealand made 177 for seven -– their highest total in a

Twenty20 international against the Proteas -– before restricting South Africa to 145 for eight.

Stand-in captain Kane Williamson, leading a side

missing several key players, some injured and others resting, was delighted with what he described as “a much improved effort” following defeat by six wickets in the first match in Durban on Friday.

“We touched on a few areas which we needed to improve on after Durban,” said Williamson.

“We wanted a few more runs in the middle overs and we managed that. We took wickets at crucial moments but we were also quite smart with our bowling.”

South Africa were never on target in the chase after losing their first three batsmen, including world stars Hashim Amla and AB de Villiers, for 47 runs inside seven overs.

New Zealand spinners Nathan McCullum and Ish Sodhi took two wickets and were economical on a pitch which Williamson admitted got more difficult to bat on in the second innings.

De Villiers, again captaining South Africa in the absence of an injured Faf du Plessis, said his side were well beaten.

“We were definitely below par with the ball today and unfortunately we lost wickets at crucial times,” he said.

The sides start a three-match one-day series at the same venue on Wednesday.

As in the first match, Guptill and Williamson got their side off to a fast start, putting on 52 off 5.3 overs before Williamson was caught at third man off Kagiso Rabada for 25.

The pair put on 68 for the first wicket in Durban before the side subsided to 151 for eight.

With Guptill making his 60 off 35 balls, New Zealand put up a better performance on Sunday but again there were no further major partnerships.

GIROUD’S STRIKE REGAINS ARSENAL’S WINNING WAYSLondon

Arsenal got back on track after their opening day

meltdown as Olivier Giroud’s superb volley inspired a 2-1 Premier League win against Crystal Palace yesterday.

Arsene Wenger’s side were embarrassed by a woeful 2-0 home defeat against West Ham United last weekend, but they went some way to restoring their confidence with a gritty display at Selhurst Park.

While it was still far from a vintage Arsenal performance, there were reasons for Wenger to be encouraged -- none more significant than the memorable strike from much-criticised France forward Giroud which opened the scoring in the first half.

Also heartening for Wenger was the way Arsenal refused to be shaken by Joel Ward’s excellent equaliser, keeping

their equilibrium to regain the lead through a Damien Delaney own goal and holding firm in the closing stages to secure their first win of the season. The Gunners hadn’t lost at Palace since 1979 and extending that run was essential as Wenger’s team try to avoid a repeat of the slow start that shattered their title challenge last season.

Key to Arsenal’s hopes of a first title since 2004 is the form of Alexis Sanchez and the Chile winger, making a belated maiden start of the season after his country’s victorious Copa America campaign, was quickly back in the thick of the action.

After Yohan Cabaye’s shot from a Palace corner had been blocked, Arsenal broke at speed and Mesut Ozil sent Sanchez through on goal.

However, Sanchez’s

ponderous touch allowed Ward to block his first shot before his effort from the rebound was cleared off the line by James McArthur.

Even so, Palace’s last-ditch defending was never likely to keep Arsenal at bay for long and Wenger’s men deservedly took the lead in the 16th minute.

Lambasted by Arsenal fans for his inconsistent form last season, Giroud still retains Wenger’s support and he showed why with an instinctive strike that should silence his critics for a while.

Ozil, surging down the left edge of the penalty area, whipped a cross towards Giroud and from 12 yards out the French striker pivoted to guide an acrobatic left-foot volley past Palace keeper Alex McCarthy for his first goal of the season. Andy Murray will replace Roger Federer as number

two in the world after defeating Japan’s Kei Nishikori 6-3, 6-0 on Saturday to reach the final of the Montreal Masters.

The Scot will Monday move into second on the ATP ranking list behind longtime number one Novak Djokovic, his Sunday finals opponent on the Canadian hardcourts.

Murray will line up against Djokovic after the top seed defeated France’s Jeremy Chardy 6-4, 6-4 in the other semi-final.

Djokovic said that he was annoyed briefly during his match by the smell of marijuana smoke from the stands.

“I think it stopped after a while. Whoever it was ... he was probably on the seventh sky somewhere.

“I felt I was playing better as I was inhaling,” he joked.

The Serb, with three Canadian titles already to hand, advanced

in 80 minutes to win his 10th match against Chardy without a

loss in the series. Murray, 2009 and 2010 Canadian champion, preyed upon a tapped-out Nishikori who may have run out of puff after winning a late-night match 24 hours earlier.

Murray reached the final in little more than an hour as he ran down every shot and left his Japanese opponent searching for answers after winning the Washington title on hardcourt last weekend. Djokovic owns Murray 19-8, winning their last eight matches.

And the world number one is prepared for a battle.

“Andy, who is all around player, very complete, has been somebody that has been around for so many years. He knows how to play in the big stage, in the big matches. “I know what I need to do, and that’s playing my best in order to win. So I need to get myself ready.”

Last season’s Bundesliga runners-up VfL Wolfsburg

opened their new league campaign with a 2-1 win over Eintracht Frankfurt yesterday as all three goals came in the opening 20 minutes.

Dieter Hecking’s side, who finished 10 points behind champions Bayern Munich last season, flew out of the blocks at the Volkswagen Arena with Croatia winger Ivan Perisic and Dutch striker Bas Dost putting them 2-0 up.

Wolves were rewarded for some patient build-up play as new striker Max Kruse fired in a brilliant cross which Perisic headed home at the far post on 13 minutes. They doubled their lead four minutes later

after calamitous Frankfurt defending in the area as Kruse poked the ball across the face of goal and Dost buried his shot from close range.

Frankfurt fought back with defensive midfielder Stefan Reinartz taking advantage of some sloppy Wolfsburg defending to pull a goal back for the visitors on 19 minutes.

It proved to be the end of the scoring, although both sides had second-half chances as Perisic in particular went close.

Later, VfB Stuttgart lost 3-1 at home to Cologne as Anthony Modeste converted a second-half penalty and Simon Zoller doubled the visitors’ lead two minutes later before Stuttgart’s Daniel Didavi netted a late spot-kick.

Swiss teen Belinda Bencic outlasted Simona Halep to

win yesterday’s WTA Rogers Cup final when the Romanian second seed retired trailing 7-6 (7/5), 6-7 (4/7), 3-0.

Bencic, who upset world number one Serena Williams

in the semi-finals, broke twice to open the third set before the effort of battling in extreme heat and humidity proved more than Halep could take.

The Swiss 18-year-old has won 21 of her last 25 matches and defeated four top-10 foes this week, improving to 6-1

this year against such high-ranked rivals.

It was the second career WTA crown for Bencic, whose first came in June at Eastbourne, and it capped an impressive week in which she defeated six Grand Slam finalists -- Eugenie Bouchard,

Caroline Wozniacki, Sabine Lisicki, Ana Ivanovic, Halep and Williams, winner of the past four Grand Slam events in a row. Bencic will jump to 12th in the world rankings after starting the week 20th, improving her position for the US Open.

With her mane of blonde hair and model good looks,

Jessica Mendoza is not your average showjumper. The 19-year-old will become the youngest British international for nearly 40 years, and the first woman to compete for Britain this century, when she rides in the European Championships in Aachen, Germany, next week.

The European Jumping Championships will be her first senior event. Is she nervous? Not at all. ‘I’m looking forward to competing with the rest of the team, they are really nice guys,’ she says. ‘We jumped together in Rotterdam where we not only won but we also got on really well as a team which gives me great confidence.’

Mendoza will need every ounce of confidence she has. Not only will the teenager be the youngest and most inexperienced rider in the competition next week, she also faces

the fact that this is a ‘must win’ tournament for Britain.

Despite winning gold at London 2012, the national team have not yet qualified for the Olympics in Rio next year. They need to win next week in order to earn a place.

It is a huge amount of pressure on Mendoza, but she insists that she can cope. ‘I don’t really feel the pressure or nerves. When I go in the ring I’m just thinking about going as fast as I can and keeping the fences up,’ she said.

Di Lampard, the team manager, says: ‘It may seem crazy to select someone so young, but this girl is so cool, focused and unbelievably determined. She rides with no fear and is an out and out winner.’

If Mendoza helps Team GB to victory next week and keeps her place in the team through to the Olympics, she will join a group of glamorous young showjumpers in Rio who are changing the face of a sport once

considered the preserve of older riders.

The glitzy newcomers include Jessica Springsteen, daughter of rock star Bruce, Microsoft founder Bill Gates’s daughter Jennifer, and Athina, granddaughter of shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis. And all hoping to secure Olympic places.

It’s very different from the heyday of British showjumping in the 1970s, when blunt Yorkshireman Harvey Smith was the star of the sport.

But Lampard warns against thinking that the sport is all glitz and glamour: ‘It may look glamorous but it involves making a lot of sacrifices and serious graft. Jess has proved she’s as tough as the best of them. She’s put herself out there against the best riders in the world and beaten most of them.’

Mendoza started riding when she was three, and by the time she was seven she knew she wanted to be a professional showjumper.

She enjoyed an illustrious career in ponies and juniors, winning two team golds at the Pony European Championships in 2011 and 2012 and three successive British junior titles. She was widely acknowledged as one of the leading young showjumpers in Europe.

She moved to Holland to be at the heart of international show jumping and continued to see her skills improve. She now rides seven days a week and competes every week, all year round. ‘I start riding at 8.30am but I love it. I don’t really take days off,’ she says. Top showjumpers spend most of their lives on the

road, and Mendoza is no exception. She usually travels in the horsebox with her horses, visiting some of the world’s most glamorous cities — Monaco, Hong Kong, Abu Dhabi. ‘I love competing in all these amazing venues,’ she says.

M e n d o z a ’ s boyfriend, Michael, is also a showjumper, and her parents, Sarah and Paul, are always with her at tournaments.

Paul, is a successful businessman who

made his fortune

in a number of movie-related ventures including the Harry Potter films.

Today he acts as his daughter’s manager and trainer. ‘We bicker sometimes because we’re so similar,’ she says. ‘I know how much he wants me to win and if I make a mistake or have a bad day, he’ll just get in his car and drive home to watch the

football.’(Daily Mail Online)

MENDOZA THE YOUNGEST SHOWJUMPER

Man City-3, Chelsea- 0

CITY SINK CHELSEA Manchester

Sergio Aguero, Vincent Kompany and Fernandinho

scored as Manchester City crushed Chelsea 3-0 yesterday to establish a five-point advantage over the champions in the fledgling Premier League table.

After going close several times, Aguero celebrated his return to the starting XI by wriggling through Chelsea’s defence to score a 31st-minute opener before Kompany and Fernandinho made the game safe late on.

The well-earned victory continued City’s impressive start to the season following their 3-0 win at West Bromwich Albion and gave Manuel Pellegrini a first win over his nemesis Jose Mourinho since the Portuguese returned to Chelsea in 2013.

Defeat completed a miserable week for Mourinho, widely criticised for demoting his medics Eva Carneiro and Jon Fearn after last weekend’s 2-2 draw with Swansea City, and means Chelsea have failed

to win one of their first two league games for the first time since 1998.

It was also a day to forget for visiting captain John Terry, who watched the second half from the bench after being substituted at half-time -- the first time Mourinho had taken him off in 177 league games.

After a flurry of near-misses, Aguero broke the deadlock by exchanging passes with Yaya Toure, darting into the box and placing a low shot beyond the reach of Asmir Begovic, deputising for the suspended Thibaut Courtois.

Hazard forced Joe Hart into a save in the second half, but City looked more likely to add to their lead and so it proved as Kompany headed home from David Silva’s 79th-minute corner before Fernandinho drilled home from the edge of the box.

Earlier, Arsene Wenger breathed a sigh of relief as Arsenal got their title challenge up and running with a hard-fought 2-1 win at Crystal Palace.

After slumping to a dismal 2-0 defeat against West Ham United in their opening game, Wenger’s side had no margin for error at Selhurst Park if they wanted to avoid being cast adrift in the title race.

They rose to the challenge, securing a first league win of the season thanks to Olivier Giroud’s superb 16th-minute volley and a Damien Delaney own goal in the 55th minute after Joel Ward had blasted Palace level.

Pardew criticises referee

It was a much-needed confidence boost for the Gunners and Wenger conceded it would have been hard to recover if they had left Selhurst Park empty-handed.

“I’m very pleased with the three points. If we had gone two games and zero points it would be absolutely difficult and we knew this would be a tricky one,” Wenger said.
