Austria plans to close border as refugee crisis growsViennaAustria warned yesterday that it planned to close its border again to refugees and migrants as thousands of people travelled across on their way to Germany, and splits on how to handle the crisis deepened across Europe.Pope Francis in his Sunday ser-mon called on every religious community across Europe to do their part to stem the humanitarian crisis by offer-ing sanctuary to a migrant family, in stark contrast to the rhetoric of politicians such as Hungary’s Viktor Orbán who have claimed that the mostly Muslim arrivals threat-en European Christianity. He told tens of thousands of people in St Peter’s Square that it was not enough to tell those on the march to “life’s hope” to have courage, and called on every Catholic par-ish, convent, monastery and sanctuary in Europe to shelter a family.

AS EMOTIONS LINGER ON, BRAVE SOULS LAID TO REST

Officials, huge crowd attend funeral ceremony DT News [email protected]

On an emotional day, four martyrs were laid to rest at two

different cemeteries of the Kingdom yesterday. The soldiers of Bahrain Defence Force (BDF) were among five who martyred while performing their duty in the “Restoring of Hope” military operation, which is currently going on in Yemen by the Arab States Coalition, aiming to defend the legitimacy of the country against rebellious militias.

The funerals, held at Hunainiya and Muharraq graveyards respectively, were headed by the families of the martyred men, senior BDF officers, including BDF Chief Field-Marshall Shaikh Khalifa bin Ahmed Al Khalifa, Royal Guard Commander Brigadier-General HH Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Royal Guard Special Force Commander Major HH Shaikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Defence Affairs Minister Maj. General Yusuf bin Ahmed Al Jalahma, BDF personnel and people from all walks of life.

‘It’s an honour to serve with them’ While speaking in an interview with national television (Bahrain TV), Shaikh Khalid said, “I’ve been honoured to serve with these men for eight years. I can’t describe my appreciation to them and my condolence to their family members.”

Commenting on HM the King’s orders to allocate a day for Bahraini martyrs, Shaikh Khalid said, “It’s a deserving appreciation to those men who offered their souls to their country.”

“We as a force and BDF men, holding on to our principles in defending our country. Victory is near, by God’s will,” he added.

Abdulmonim Ali HussainBody of martyr Abdulmonim Ali Hussain was brought to Hunainiya cemetery in East Riffa at about 7.45am. After the prayers for the dead were completed, both Shaikh

Nasser and Shaikh Khalid attended the funeral processions. Both of them shouldered the body of the martyr until the graveyard.

Shaikh Khalid was seen helping the family members of the martyrs in laying him to rest. Later, he handed over the Bahraini flag that covered the coffin to the father of the martyr. He not only condoled the family of the martyr, but also highlighted the great sacrifice made by him for the

country. Speaking to the media, the father

said, “My son is the son of the Kingdom of Bahrain. He died defending the soil of his country and fellow GCC countries. It was always his wish to die a martyr. Thank God he got what he wished for.”

Almost an hour later, the same crowd moved to Muharraq cemetery to join the prayers, funeral and burial of the three other martyrs-

First Sergeant Mohammed Nabil Hamad, Sergeant Abdulqader Al Alass and Sergeant Hassan Iqbal Mohammed.

First Sergeant Mohammed Nabil HamadOmar, the brother of First Sergeant Mohammed Nabil Hamad, said, “I lost more than a brother. He was like a father and educator for me. There are eight years that separate us. He had a good heart and carried limitless kindness. Before

leaving to his mission in Yemen, he told me about his wish to become a martyr for the sake of our country.”

Sergeant Hassan Iqbal MohammedThe father of Sergeant Hassan Iqbal Mohammed revealed a gut-wrenching thing that his son had left for Yemen two weeks after the delivery of his daughter Maryam, who is two-month-old now. He is survived by his wife and two sons, Ahmed and Ali.

“Thank God that he died while on duty and sacrificed himself defending his country and for the right cause,” the father said.

“He was a good son and called up his mother a few hours before his martyrdom. It was like saying goodbye,” he added emotionally.

UAE COPS HELP BAHRAINI FAMILY TRACE RELATIVES

Relatives reunited after missing family for ten years DT News [email protected]

Manama

A Bahraini family was reportedly reunited with

their Emirati relatives after ten years of separation thanks to the efforts of UAE authorities.

Sharjah police reportedly helped a Bahraini family locate their relatives who were Emirati citizens. The Bahraini family had not been in touch with the Emirati family for the past 10 years and did not know where in UAE they lived.

According to a newspaper in UAE, Gulf News, the son of the Bahraini family, Abdullah Eisa Yousuf Malallah, sent a message to UAE police through social media about their concern to which the officials responded.

“In a touching emotional scene, Sharjah Police succeeded

in reuniting two GCC families whose members had been separated for 10 years. The reunion happened within four days of the police receiving a message via Instagram from a Bahraini family seeking Sharjah Police’s help to search

for their relatives with whom they had not had any contact for 10 years. The Sharjah Police informed Brigadier Saif Mohammad Al Ziri Al Shamsi, Commander-in-Chief of Sharjah Police, about the issue,” Gulf News reported.

“Lieutenant Abdul Rahman Abdul Aziz, of the media department at Sharjah Police, received the message from the son of the Bahraini family, and he informed the police chief about the issue, who in turn, gave instructions to help

reunite the two families,” it said.

“Sharjah Police formed a search team headed by Lieutenant Abdul Aziz. The team contacted the family who resided in Bahrain to gather more information regarding

their Emirati relatives who stayed in Sharjah. The search and investigation efforts resulted in identifying the names and location of the relatives,” the report added.

The UAE authorities informed the Bahraini family that they had found the relatives. They also witnessed the family reunion at Sharjah International Airport.

A Middle East-wide survey conducted by Bayt.com revealed that 45 per cent of Bahrainis are confident that their personal finances will

improve in the next six months. The Middle East and North

Africa Consumer Confidence Index survey stated that in the

Middle East, GCC citizens are the most positive about the future with over half of the respondents reporting high hopes.

In Bahrain, 28 pc expect their personal finances to remain the same while 14pc expected it to get worse in the next few months. Thirteen per cent of the respondents were unsure.

UAE is apparently the most optimistic, with 54 pc of respondents giving positive outlook.

However, all Middle Eastern nations are expecting an increase in cost of living. Sixty-four per cent of Bahrainis expected cost of living to increase, 23pc expect it to remain the same, 5pc expected it to decrease and 8pc were unsure.

GATES OPEN FOR ANOTHEREXCITING ACADEMIC YEAR

Public schools in Bahrain received 133,000 students yesterday

Dr Al Nuaimi congratulates students

DT News [email protected]

Manama

More than 133,000 students were received by public

schools yesterday, on the first working day of the academic year.

The Kingdom’s roads witnessed long tailbacks, which were unusual during the past three months (summer holidays).

SIX SUSPECTED OF TORCHINGMP’S CARS GET 10-YEAR JAIL

Two of Shaikh Al Asfoor’s cars were set ablaze during last year’s pollsDT News NetworkManama

Six persons suspected of burning MP Shaikh Majeed

Al Asfoor’s cars during last year’s elections were sentenced to ten years each in jail.

Two cars belonging to Shaikh Al Asfoor, were set on fire last year after he registered as a Parliamentary candidate in the Capital Governorate’s constituency eight. He was later elected unopposed.

Of the six accused, aged between 15 and 23, only four

are in police custody. The others are absconding and were tried in absentia.

Although the four men pleaded not guilty, one of them had earlier admitted to prosecutors during investigation to committing the attack with firebombs.

He added that they wanted to teach their victim a lesson after he decided to run for the Parliamentary election.

The accused, who was working as a security guard at a local mall said, “I went to my

grandmother house in Sitra, a day prior to the incident. There

I met two of my friends (who are among the accused) and

they told me Shaikh Al Asfoor is standing for the election. Therefore, we decided to attack his cars to teach him a lesson and to scare him away.”

Prosecutors said the accused used firebombs to burn the cars, all of which were provided by the fifth accused. All six of them were accused on grounds of arson, damaging private properties, possessing firebombs and participating in an illegal gathering.

It may be noted a total of 13 candidates were attacked

by arsonists during last year’s elections.

Election tents belonging to Isa Ahmed Mustafa Turki, Sayed Abdulqader Abduljaleel and Abdulla Tarrar Sultan Ali were burnt in the Northern Governorate, while Ali Al Derazi, Jaffar Ibrahim Al Asfoor and Hussein Salman Al Hamer had their cars torched.

Mohammed Al Mawali had his car damaged in a Molotov cocktail attack and Mohammed Mahdi Al Ekri’s commercial garage in Sitra was set ablaze.

SUSTAINABLE ENVIRONMENT,CLIMATE CHANGE BROACHED

Bahrain committed to environment protection: Dr MirzaMuhammad Azam/[email protected]

Manama

Energy Minister Dr. Abdulhussain Mirza

affirmed Bahrain’s full committment in protecting and sustaining environment, while speaking at a seminar held at the United Nations House in Manama yesterday.

In the seminar titled “Media Awareness Raising and Capacity Building on Energy, Climate Change, and the Road to Paris Conference,” the minister said the Kingdom

aims to decrease emission of greenhouse gases.

Dr Mirza said the Sustainable Energy Unit (SEU) in Bahrain is working efficiently to ensure the sustainability of the country’s resources and the protection of the environment.

“We aim to have a national unified integrated approach in these crucial and critical issues. We work to attain the Bahrain Economic Vision 2030,” said the minister.

He said the SEU initiative is being closely monitored by the government and expressed

his appreciation to the Deputy Prime Minister and the chairman of the committee Shaikh Khalid bin Abdulla Al Khalifa.

The event was organised by the Supreme Council for Environment (SCE) in association with the Office of the Energy Minister and, the

United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and French Embassy.

Speaking on the occasion Chief Executive of SCE, Dr. Mohammed Mubarak bin Daina said that climate change agreement, which is expected to conclude in the Paris Conference in December,

would definitely change the world. He confirmed the world would start acting differently afterwards, adding that Bahrain is among the most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change.

“Rise in sea level threatens our coasts,” stressed Dr Daina adding media should play its role in raising awareness.

UNDP Res ident Representative in Bahrain, Peter Grohmann, said their main objective was to inform the public about the imminent threats posed by climate

change, not only globally but also in Bahrain.

Grohmann said UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon has called climate change the “defining issue of our time.”

He said that in Bahrain, there has been a real leadership to address energy issues and climate change, with a particular focus on efficient management of energy and water.

“UNDP will strive to share the lessons we learnt with Bahrain to tackle climate change,” said Grohmann.

Climate-disrupted planet would be an unstable one, warns French Ambassador

DT News NetworkManama

French Ambassador Bernard Ragnauld Fabre said the effects

of climate change could not be ignored anymore and must be addressed with a firm fist.

He was addressing the seminar on “Media Awareness Raising and Capacity Building on Energy, Climate Change, and the Road to Paris Conférence” here yesterday at UN House.

He said the threats to peace and security would increase if the rise in temperatures exceeds 2°C. “A

climate-disrupted planet would be an unstable one,” he stressed.

“I would like to commend the Bahraini government for including the issue into its action plan for the years to come,” he said. “The creation of a Sustainable Energy Unit (SEU) is a strong message of dedicated action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in Bahrain.”

He said the Paris Climate Conference (COP21) must produce an agreement to accelerate the ecological transition and keep the average global temperature rise

below 2°C. The future President of COP21

Laurent Fabius confirmed recently, it has been decided “not to limit the Paris Conference and future COP sessions to governmental aspects only. It aims to mobilise civil society as a whole, starting with local governments, communes and regions, businesses and NGOs.”

For the first time at a conference of this type, the projects developed at sub-state level by economic and institutional stakeholders, including companies, NGOs, and local governments, will be recognized as having fundamental importance

in the global fight against climate change.

The French ambassador said one of the main advances of the Copenhagen conference was the promise of $100 billion a year in aid to the fight against climate change.

Behind this figure, however, there are still many ambiguities: the $100bn, will they come from public or private sources? Will it be additional financing? Will they be directed to all developing countries, or targeted towards the poorest and most vulnerable countries? However, a milestone has been reached with the initial capitalization of the Green Climate Fund, amounting to $9.3bn, including nearly $1bn from France.

The ambassador stressed that climate has always posed

threats to security. “Climate disruption upsets the entire range of economic and social equilibrium and therefore threatens countries’ internal security. Climate change can start international conflict over the control of vital and increasingly scarce resources particularly water,” he said.

The all-new 2016 Infiniti Q70 is a flagship model in the brand’s line up and is at

equal mark to its rivals like Audi, BMW and Mercedes. The model has already gone through many upgrades, both in style and mechanics and now looks smarter, sharper and more refined than the previous versions.

Performance, Engine Spec and Safety

Under the hood, the Infinity Q70 is a beast with a massive 3.7 liter V6 engine with a towering horsepower of 328 @7000 rpm and a 37 kg-m of torque @5200 rpm, with a 7 speed Automatic Transmission with manual shift modes . It also comes with the Adaptive Shift control and lock up Torque converter. There are of different drive modes like Standard, Sport and Snow. When it comes to the safety norms the Infinity Q70 gives prior importance to the passengers with ample safety features.

Also worthy to be mentioned is the Infinity Advanced Air bag System (AABS) with dual –stage front supplemental air bags with seat belt sensors, driver and assist seat and curtain airbags. The seat belt is of 3-point seat belts with pretensioner and loader limiter. The automobile is having an Independent Double wishbone with coil spring front suspension and an independent multi-link rear which makes the car float on the road, and the

speed sensing variable assist power rack and pinion steering makes the drive even better. Other features like Anti-lock Braking system (ABS), Electronic brake Distribution (EBD) and Intelligent Brake Assist (BA), front and rear parking sensors, intelligent brake assist with forward collision warning (FCW) gives the passenger a safe and somewhat a smooth, floating ride.

Exterior:It looks stunning from the outside with

the lower lip integrated on the bumpers with an air damp and a large grill that is surrounded with chrome finish and with an Infinity badging. It continues

to follow the infinity’s curvy design language and it is well proportioned. From the side, it is a massive car with a big 245/40/20 inch alloy with a low profile rubber. This makes the Infinity Q70 lower, wider and sportier looks –both from the side and the front slant.

Interior:

The 2016 Infinity Q70 bags with an all-black sporty leather interior making it all the more jaw-dropping. The interior comes with a bunch of features from the high quality leather steering wheels with tilt and telescopic adjustment to all types of controls like audio, cruise, and NAV integrated on the wheels. The car is having the magnesium paddle shift with an intelligent cruise control with Low speed following (LSF). The front seats are ventilated with memory settings for the drivers and of 10-way electrical seat adjustments. The central console is incredible with the Japanese Ash-wood

inserts and loaded with a fully functioned 8-inch touch infotainment system with a 5.1DIN BOSE music server which makes the car interior more extravagant. The car is also equipped with a dual-zone adaptive climate control AC.

Estranged couple Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner are not reconciling despite rumours

to the contrary. The duo fuelled reconciliation rumours after

attending a two-hour session at a marriage counselling centre in Brentwood earlier this week. Besides, they were also photographed to be in good spirit and smiling as they left a doctor’s office in Santa Monica, California.

However, according to a new report, the rumours of their reconciliation are false.

“There is no reconciliation and no chance for one,” said a source.

“The damage is already done. They’re leading separate lives,” the source added.

According to the source, Affleck has already moved out of the family house.

He is currently living in a Pacific Palisades home.

As for their last togetherness, it was claimed that the duo were just trying to be “civilized, especially when dealing with issues involving their three kids”.

Singer Britney Spears’ father has reportedly asked her to take a break from dating for sometime

following her split from boyfriend Charlie Ebersol earlier this year.

Jamie Spears thinks the 33-year-old “Perfume” hitmaker, who split from her last boyfriend Charlie Ebersol two months ago, should steer clear of men for six months and focus on herself.

“Jamie wants her to rebuild her confidence after breaking up with Charlie, while Britney wants to find a man right away. She pushes her dad every day, saying that a new guy will help her forget about Charlie,” a source said.

Hrithik Roshan and Sonam Kapoor’s romantic music video Dheere Dheere

composed by YoYo Honey Singh has garnered more than 10 million YouTube views in just five days.

The song which was up on YouTube on September 1 has become a digital sensation and reached the 10 million view mark faster than Salman Khan’s song from Hero titled Main Hu Hero, which incidentally was sung by the actor.

While Main Hu Hero took 21 days to breach past 10 million views, Hrithik Roshan has done that within a week which is commendable.

Dheere Dheere is a tribute to the 90s track by the same name from Aashiqui.

YoYo Honey Singh has recomposed the track with slight alterations written into the lyrics by him and his mother Bhupinder Kaur.

YOUR STAR TODAY

Expect a busy day. You’re likely to spend a lot of time in the car,

running errands, paying visits, per-haps project-related in some way. A number of phone calls might have to be made to friends, or to members of a group with which you’re affiliated. This might involve sharing some good news or exciting information.

ARIES20th March - 20th April

Social events and group activi-ties are likely to take up most of

your day. You could come into contact with so many people you might not be able to keep track of them all. Get names and phone numbers of all new acquaintances! You should experi-ence a lot of intellectual stimulation.

LEO 20th July - 20th Aug

You might spend hours on the phone today, possibly dis-

cussing opportunities to per-form services to others. Your mental and physical energy should be high, and you’ll want to use as many tools as you can to get whatever information you need, including books and the Internet.

SAGITTARIUS 20th Nov - 20th Dec

Today you could well want to put one last burst of effort into a

project of some sort, as this could make a big difference both to your income and to your status. It could bring you before the public in some way. Your physical ener-gy is high, so whatever you choose to work on is likely to be accomplished quickly.

TAURUS 20th April - 20th May

Today you might find your-self working on a lot of writings.

They might be your own, or per-haps you’ll be editing the work of others. Computers may be involved. You could find what you’re doing rather exciting and definitely stimulating. Phone calls to in-teresting people could also take place.

VIRGO20th Aug - 20th Sept

New and exciting opportunities to earn some more money might

come your way today, perhaps through new fields that are opening up. Col-leagues could bring information your way, possibly via fax. Your sense of adventure is very high, and so risks might seem more at-tractive to you than they usually are.

CAPRICORN 20th Dec - 20th Jan

So many plans and ideas are flooding your mind today that

you might have trouble sorting them all out if you don’t write them down. They could involve travel, education, group activi-ties, writing and publishing. You might want to discuss them with friends, or with mem-bers of a group you belong to.

GEMINI 20th May - 20th June

If you’ve been thinking of taking a long trip by air, this is the day

to start planning it, or even actu-ally leave if you can work it in. Your level of excitement and anticipation is very high, and your sense of adventure is at its peak. You aren’t likely to complete the day with-out doing something unusual or exciting.

LIBRA 20th Sep - 20th Oct

Friendships or love relation-ships, which are formed today, are

rooted as much in intellectual com-patibility as in emotional attraction. A num-ber of stimulating conversations could take place throughout the day. Creative projects go well, and if you’ve been looking for some information, you should find it today.

AQUARIUS 20th Jan - 20th Feb

A copious amount of physical and mental energy could be turned to

psychic, metaphysical or spiritual activities today, as you’re feeling especially intuitive. You could well find yourself almost reading minds. One possible channel for all this energy is apt to be service to others, perhaps giving counselling or assistance.

CANCER 20th June - 20th July

Paperwork regarding money might need to be taken care of

quickly today, as you could well be planning to entertain visitors in your home. These are apt to be exciting people who bring good news and exciting infor-mation your way. The doors to adven-ture are going to open up in some way.

SCORPIO 20th Oct - 20th Nov

You’re generally intuitive by nature, but today you should

find yourself so sensitive to others that you’re picking up on just about eve-rything. Stay away from hospitals or po-lice stations if you can - you might absorb everyone’s pain. It’s far better to put this to work for you spiritually or artistically.

DOLLAR PEG A BOON!Moody’s analyst

We cannot just say because we have a difficult task now, the balanced budget or the issue of debt are no longer important

-German Chancellor Angela Merkel on migrant crisis

Tahir Haneef/[email protected]

Manama

The peg to US$ has helped Bahrain to withstand

recent global economic maelstroms, according to Moody’s analysts. A group of analysts led by Jean-Francois Tremblay, Associate Managing Director, on a recent visit to the Kingdom, said that they expect the US$ peg to continue.

Bahrain maintains an exchange rate peg at 0.376 Bahraini dinars to the US$, according to the Central Bank of the Kingdom. Moody’s said that such an arrangement has helped the Kingdom to access

conventional and Islamic debt markets in an effective way.

GCC has shown resilience to global turbulence and the

average rating from Moody’s for GCC is at the higher end of global ratings, the analysts said. Muted global growth is here

to stay and multiple sources of downside risks remain, including China asset price correction, lower oil prices for long, disorderly response to currency volatility and Greek exit.

The world economy is not facing a threat of deflation,

Tremblay added, but warned about the low oil price’s possible impact on the GCC banking system. He said that oil price may lead to low government surpluses, lower public spending & investment or lower confidence. Lower government surplus may lead to lower public sector deposits, in turn leading to lower liquidity. Lower public spending & investment may result in lower private-sector growth and lower public-sector growth can lead to lower GDP growth. Lower confidence can cause lower asset price and lower investment & consumption that might trigger low GDP growth, he explained.

Gulf Finance House, the Bahrain-based investment

firm, said yesterday its board of directors had approved the voluntary delisting of its shares from the Kuwait Stock Exchange. It would begin the application process for delisting with Kuwait’s Capital Market Authority, although the bourse filing announcing the move did not disclose a date for when shares would cease trading. The move would also save on the costs of the listing and eliminate any possible arbitrage opportunities and incidences of violating rules in Kuwait which contradict regulations in its home market, the statement added.

Foreign individuals and institutional investors will

be allowed for the first time to buy shares of UAE telecoms giant Etisalat from September 15, the company said in a statement yesterday.

Etisalat, the second largest Arab telecoms firm after Saudi Telecom, serves 145 million customers in 15 countries.

Previously only Emirati individuals were allowed to own shares in the firm, which is 60 per cent owned by the UAE government.

It decided in June to open up ownership to foreign individuals.

“Trading in Etisalat Group’s

shares on the Abu Dhabi Stock Exchange by non-UAE individuals... will start on

September 15, 2015,” said a statement from the firm’s board posted on the exchange’s

website.It specified that under the

new rules shares would be open to “foreign individuals, foreign corporate entities, UAE free zone entities and UAE incorporated entities.”

Total foreign ownership in Etisalat will not be allowed to exceed 20pc.

Etisalat’s share price rose by about 5pc on the news, pushing the Abu Dhabi index to open slightly up as the bourse in neighbouring Dubai dropped 1.6pc.

When the news was first announced in June, Etisalat’s share price rose the maximum allowed 15pc for two consecutive days.

Greece’s radical-left Syriza party is neck-and-neck with

its conservative rivals two weeks ahead of snap elections, opinion polls showed yesterday, with an absolute majority for any party looking increasingly unlikely.

In a marked change from several weeks ago when charismatic Syriza leader Alexis Tsipras was by far Greece’s most popular politician, the polls published by the To Vima and Ethnos newspapers also indicate a rise in popularity for Vangelis Meimarakis, leader of the conservative New Democracy party.

Tsipras quit as prime minister on August 20, triggering the early elections, after suffering a major rebellion amongst his lawmakers over Greece’s huge new international bailout.

Both surveys showed Syriza maintaining a razor-thin lead

ahead of the vote on September 20, with To Vima placing the leftists on 26.5 per cent against 25.9pc for New Democracy. Ethnos’ poll suggested 24.4pc of Greeks intend to vote for Syriza, and 24pc for the conservatives.

To Vima’s poll also showed Meimarakis pulling ahead in the personal rankings, with 44.8pc against 44pc for Tsipras. Ethnos, however, still had Tsipras ahead on 45.8pc against 44.3pc.

In an interview with the Real News weekly on Sunday, Meimarakis repeated his call for the two parties to form a coalition, an idea Tsipras has rejected.

Meimarakis, a 61-year-old career politician who took over the party reins in July, also said he wanted to “improve” the terms of Greece’s new 86bn-euro ($96bn) bailout.

Muzaffarabad

Five countries, including China, will reconstruct and

develop Muzaffarabad city, the capital of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir which was devastated by the 2005 earth quake. The city is 125 km from Islamabad. Other countries involved are Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Kuwait and South Korea, which will build hydropower projects, schools, colleges, government offices, university and mosques

in the area. According to senior officials

in the PoK government, at least 3,000 Chinese and 300 Korean workers were stationed in Muzaffarabad and adjacent areas for construction of different hydroelectricity and other projects. Massive reconstruction started in Muzaffarabad, after the 2005 earthquake that killed around 60,000 people.

Chinese and Koreans are mainly building the hydro-

power projects. Koreans have already completed two 100 MW projects and are working on another 89MW project. Chinese are developing 1100 MW power project on river Jehlum, besides

other smaller projects. Water and Power Development Authority of Pakistan is also developing a 969 MW Neelum-Jehlum hydropower project near Muzaffarabad.

Saudi Arabia is building the University campus in Muzaffarabad, currently functioning from multistoried temporary structures. The new government office buildings, secretariat and residential enclosures are being built by Turkey. (The Economic Times)

Dubai

Saudi Arabia will cut spending and issue more

bonds as it faces a record budget shortfall due to falling oil prices, the finance minister said yesterday.

The kingdom -- the biggest Arab economy and the world’s largest oil exporter -- is facing an unprecedented budget crunch after crude prices dropped by more than half in a year to below $50 a barrel.

It has so far relied on its huge fiscal reserves to bridge the gap but Finance Minister Ibrahim Al Assaf said more measures would be necessary.

“We are working... to cut unnecessary expenditure,” Assaf told Dubai-based CNBC Arabia in Washington, where he is accompanying King Salman on a visit.

He provided no details on

the scale of the cuts but insisted key spending in education and health and on infrastructure would not be affected.

“There are projects that were adopted several years ago and have not started yet. These can be delayed,” Assaf said.

He said the government

would issue more conventional treasury bonds and Islamic sukuk bonds to “finance the budget deficit” -- which is projected by the International Monetary Fund at a record $130 billion (117bn euros) for this year.

The kingdom has so far

issued bonds worth “less than 100bn riyals ($27bn/24bn euros)” to help with the shortfall, he said, without providing an exact figure.

“We intend to issue more bonds and could issue sukuk for certain projects... before the end of 2015,” Assaf said.

By the end of July the government had withdrawn $82bn from its reserves, reducing the assets to $650bn.

Dubai

Most Gulf stock markets fell early yesterday

after oil prices and global equities pulled back, but telecommunications firm Etisalat supported Abu Dhabi’s bourse ahead of expected foreign fund inflows into the stock.

Etisalat surged 5.9 per cent, lifting the Abu Dhabi index 0.6pc, after the firm said yesterday it would allow foreign and institutional investors to own its shares from Sept. 15 in a long-awaited move.

Analysts say this is likely to prompt index compiler MSCI to include the second-biggest telecommunications operator

in the Gulf in its emerging markets benchmark. MSCI will announce the details of its next quarterly review on Nov. 12.

All other Gulf markets were negative after oil futures fell about 2pc on Friday as traders

shrugged off a drop in the number of US rigs drilling for oil and focused instead on a supply glut and declining share prices on Wall Street.

Dubai’s index fell 1.2pc with most stocks in the red.

Developer DAMAC, the most traded company, was down 0.3pc.

Qatar’s bourse lost 0.8pc, also falling broadly. Oman slipped 0.1pc and Kuwait’s index was down 0.3pc.

Kuwait-listed shares in GFH, the Bahrain-based investment firm, tumbled 5.4pc after GFH said its board of directors had approved the voluntary delisting of its shares from the Kuwait Stock Exchange.

The company said this would focus trading on its home listing and the main secondary market for its shares, Dubai, where volume is highest. In Dubai, GFH fell 1.5pc.

Apple is expected to unveil updated iPhones

Wednesday along with an Apple TV revamp that may signal a push into online television streaming dominated by Netflix.

Apple remained mum even as rumours ran rampant about what is in store at the San Francisco media event.

In trademark enigmatic style, invitations provided little more than the time and place of the event, to be held at the spacious Bill Graham Civic Auditorium near city hall.

A line on the invite reading: “Hey Siri, give us a hint,” led many to believe that virtual assistant software Siri, which is built into Apple devices, will help people find shows or movies on Apple TV.

Apple TV is also believed to be getting its own App Store, which will be open to outside developers who can make games and other content for it.

The third-generation Apple TV was introduced slightly more than three years ago. The California-based company long downplayed Apple TV

as a “hobby” after the original version was released in 2007.

“They are finally revisiting their hobby, the Apple TV,” said Forrester analyst Frank Gillett.

Apple is dabbling with the idea of making online television programming in a move that would challenge established players such as Netflix and Amazon Prime, according to a recent report in show-business magazine Variety.

“There is a definite movement toward cord-cutting, and Apple is in

position to do that,” said Gartner analyst Van Baker.

“They have the premium content lined up, so the real

differentiator is to bring network television to the platform.”

“If rumours of a large iPad

play out, they may be showing us a new vision for what iPads are in our lives,” said Forrester analyst Gillett.

Apple’s decision to stage the event in a venue with a capacity to hold 7,000 people has prompted some to suspect that a surprise is in store.

“It makes me think there is a little more -- they need elbow room for something,” Gillett said.

Perhaps, he speculated, there will be a “Trojan Horse in Apple TV,” allowing it to control smart gadgets in homes.

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) boss Sergio

Marchionne said yesterday that seeking a tie-up with General Motors was a “high priority” and such a deal would also be the best strategic option for its US rival.

GM’s board rebuffed a merger proposal from the Italian-American carmaker earlier this year. That has not stopped Marchionne from wooing his bigger competitor as he seeks to reduce the number of players in the industry and share the prohibitive costs of building greener and more intelligent cars. “That discussion remains a high priority for FCA,” he said on the sidelines of the Formula One Italian Grand Prix in Monza, northern Italy.

He did not want to discuss the next steps FCA might take or their timing, but said a merger with GM would “be the best possible strategic alternative for us and for them.

‘DEAR GOD I HOPE HE’S ALIVE’Istanbul

A Turkish police officer who was pictured picking

up the lifeless body of three-year-old Syrian refugee Aylan Kurdi - whose death pricked the world’s conscience - said he thought of his own son when he saw the toddler on the beach.

Speaking to Turkey’s Dogan news agency, Mehmet Ciplak recounted how he prayed the little boy was still alive as he walked towards him and scooped him up from the water’s edge.

“When I approached the

baby, I said to myself, ‘Dear God I hope he’s alive.’ But he showed no signs of life. I was crushed,” he said.

“I have a six-year-old son. The moment I saw the baby, I thought about my own son and put myself into his

father’s place. Words cannot describe what a sad and tragic sight it was.” Ciplak added he didn’t know the photo, which reverberated across the world, was being taken and said: “I was just doing my job.”

Twelve refugees drowned on Wednesday when two boats sank on the short crossing to

Greece, and images of Aylan’s lifeless body washed ashore in

Bodrum in southwest Turkey sparked international outrage over Europe’s migrant crisis. Aylan was buried on Friday in the Syrian town of Kobane, itself now a symbol of resistance by Syrian Kurds against Islamic State (IS) extremists.

Aylan’s four-year-old brother, Ghaleb, and their mother Rihana also drowned when their boat sank.

His father Abdullah was the only family member to survive and has returned to Kobane to be close to the graves of his wife and children.

Berlin

A convoy of cars driven by German and Austrian

activists has crossed into Hungary to pick up migrants and help them reach Western Europe.

Thousands - many of whom initially fled conflict in Syria - have made their way through Austria since Hungary removed restrictions on transit on Friday.

Buses and special trains

have been taking them from the Hungarian border to Vienna and on to Germany.

The Pope said every Catholic parish in Europe should host a migrant family.

Speaking during the Angelus prayer, Pope Francis appealed for “every parish, every religious community, every monastery, every sanctuary in Europe” to take in a family. Yesterday a convoy of about 140 cars left Vienna for the

Hungarian capital, Budapest, as part of a private initiative dubbed “refugee convoy”

One of the Austrian activists taking part, Angelika Neuwirth, said that their aim was to take them back to shelters in Austrian capital.

“I think this is my duty. I’m a mum, I’m a woman from Austria and I can’t close my eyes anymore,” she said. “We are all human. No-one is illegal.”

However, Hungarian police spokeswoman Viktoria Csiszer-Kovacs said anyone taking migrants across the border was breaking the law.

Last week four Austrian activists who tried to do so were arrested for people smuggling but later released.

However, in the latest move a number of activists were able to collect migrants in Hungary without being stopped by police. (BBC)

Cyprus rescues 115 fleeing SyriaNicosia

Cyprus said rescuers yesterday saved more than

100 refugees fleeing the war in Syria after their boat ran into trouble overnight off the Mediterranean island.

The 115 people, including 54 women and children, had been aboard a small fishing boat about 40 nautical miles from the southern port of Larnaca at the time they struck trouble, said a source in the island’s Joint Rescue Coordination Centre.

Cyprus police said they had arrested three people who had admitted to smuggling the refugees, while a fourth was on the run.

Hours after they were rescued, more than half of the refugees - who included some Lebanese and Palestinians - were taken by bus to a reception camp at Kokkinotrimithia outside Nicosia.

Sitting in tents, the refugees recounted their ordeal, with many saying they had set their sights on Greece in mainland Europe.

“We didn’t want to come to Cyprus. Life is too expensive here and it is difficult to find a job. This island is for tourists,” said Zeina Joseph, a 38-year-old Palestinian who lived in Syria.

“We were at sea, but didn’t know where exactly we were,” she said, adding that her journey had cost her $3,500 dollars and lasted three days.

Muwaffaq Abu Jeish, another refugee, said: “I saw death with my own eyes, and it

was a slow death.” After three days drifting on a boat under the scorching Mediterranean sun that had turned his face and arms bright red, Abu Jeish said he too felt cheated.

“The migrants want more. They want, like many others, to go to northern Europe, specially that today they see so many who have succeeded in reaching Germany,” said reception camp director John Avlonitis.

Germany, Europe’s biggest

economy, has taken in by far the EU’s largest numbers of migrants amid the biggest refugee crisis to hit the continent since World War II.

The total number is expected to reach 800,000 this year. This weekend alone, some 17,000 migrants were expected to have passed through Bavaria in southern Germany.

The boat stranded off Cyprus had departed from the Syrian port town of Tartus and stopped in Tripoli, in northern Lebanon, Cypriot authorities said.

Australia firm on refugee quotaSydney

Australian leader Tony Abbott said yesterday the

government would welcome a higher portion of Syrian refugees amid Europe’s humanitarian crisis, but would not increase its annual refugee intake.

Canberra takes a hardline stance against asylum-seekers trying to reach Australia by boat, with Abbott saying Friday that tough policies were needed to stop drownings at sea.

Despite calls from opposition parties Labor and Greens for an increase in the refugee intake, Abbott said the annual 2015-16 quota, at 13,750, would remain the same.

“We are disposed to take more people from that troubled region under our refugee and humanitarian programme, and we are open to providing more financial assistance to the UNHCR,” he told reporters in Canberra.

Egypt seizes boats carrying migrantsCairo

The Egyptian navy has seized three fishing boats

in the Mediterranean carrying 228 migrants and arrested 17 crew members, the military said yesterday.

“Naval forces, as part of their mission to secure the Mediterranean coast, spotted three suspicious fishing boats off the coast of Alexandria,” the military said on its Facebook page.

“While inspecting them, they found, in addition to 17 crew, 228 people of different nationalities who were trying to emigrate illegally from Egypt,” the statement said.

It did not disclose the identities of the migrants or of the crew, but said they were taken to a naval base in Alexandria. It also did not say when the operation took place.

Pictures posted online by the military showed men sitting in a docked boat or on the ground of what seemed to be a harbour.

MISSING AMERICANWOMAN ‘MURDERED’

In Nepal

London

A new opinion poll published yesterday

showed more Britons want to leave the European Union than wanting to stay ahead of a referendum to be held by 2017.

The poll is the first to put the EU exit camp in the lead.

Forty-three per cent of respondents said they would vote to leave, 40pc would vote to stay and 17pc are still undecided, according to the poll by Survation research agency for the right-wing Mail

on Sunday newspaper. The survey, which was conducted online on September 3 and 4 and had 1,004 respondents, had a margin of error of two percentage points.

Survation’s last poll published at the beginning of July showed 45pc in favour of staying, 37pc for leaving and 18pc undecided.

Yesterday’s poll also showed that 22pc of those who wanted Britain to stay said they could change their mind if the migrants crisis worsened.

Twenty-nine per cent of respondents also told the pollsters that Britain should not accept any more Syrian refugees - the highest response to a question on how many

refugees Britain should take in.British lawmakers in

the House of Commons are expected today to debate and vote on a draft bill to allow the referendum, which will then pass to the House of Lords for final approval.

Prime Minister David Cameron has said he will campaign to stay in the European Union only as long as he can negotiate a series of EU reforms intended to restore more sovereignty powers to Britain.

Kathmandu

An American woman who went missing in Nepal after

arriving to help earthquake victims has been murdered, police said yesterday.

Dahlia Yahia went missing on August 7, three days after arriving in the popular tourist town of Pokhara, 210 kilometres (130 miles) west of the capital Kathmandu.

Police on Thursday arrested a man who admitted during questioning to killing the 27-year-old who had been travelling on a tourist visa, said senior local officer Govinda Adhikari.

“He confessed that he killed her and then threw her body into a river,” Adhikari said.

He declined to give details of how Yahia, who lived in Texas according to her Facebook page, was murdered.

“We have not found the body of the woman yet.”

Adhikari said the investigation was continuing,

including efforts to determine the motive for the killing.

Yahia’s family last heard from her via the messaging service WhatsApp from Pokhara on the night of August 6, according to Nepal’s trekking agencies’ association.

The family, who reached out to the association to help find her, said she visited a village in Gorkha district, the epicentre of the April quake, before heading to Pokhara.

Scores of foreign volunteers arrived in Nepal to help with relief efforts following the April 25 quake that killed more than 8,800 people and left thousands more homeless.

‘Sorry’Paris

The French secret service frogman who attached

the mines, which sank the Greenpeace flagship Rainbow Warrior in New Zealand 30 years ago apologised for his actions in an interview yesterday with investigative website Mediapart.

Jean-Luc Kister, whose face was not covered in the hour-long video interview, said he believed it was now the right time to say sorry to the family of Portuguese photographer Fernando Pereira, who was killed in the explosion, to Greenpeace and to the people of New Zealand.

“Thirty years after the event, now that emotions have

subsided and also with the distance I now have from my professional life, I thought it was the right time for me to express both my deepest regret and my apologies,” Kister said.

On July 10, 1985, the Rainbow Warrior was docked in Auckland on its way to

protest against French nuclear testing at Mururoa Atoll, about 1,200 kilometres (750 miles) southeast of Tahiti.

Kister was working for France’s spy agency, the DGSE, which carried out an unprecedented mission to stop Greenpeace by bombing a peaceful protest ship without warning in the waters of a friendly nation.

He was part of the so-called “third team”, whose mission was to attach two large limpet mines to the hull of the converted trawler, working with fellow frogman Jean Camas.

A third member of the team, Gerard Royal, a brother of France’s current environment minister and

former presidential candidate Segolene Royal, picked up the two men in a dinghy after the covert operation.

“I have the blood of an innocent man on my conscience, and that weighs on me,” a visibly emotional Kister said in the interview. “We are not cold-blooded killers. My conscience led me to apologise and explain myself.”

He said the mission that the 12-strong unit were ordered to carry out by then French defence minister Charles Hernu was “disproportionate” and he claimed that other less drastic ways of damaging the ship, such as breaking the propeller shaft to prevent it from taking to sea, were rejected by the

government. “There was a willingness at a high level to say: this has to end once and for all, we need to take radical

measures. We were told we had to sink it. Well, it’s simple to sink a boat, you have to put a hole in it.”

10 killed after boat capsizes in S Korea

Seoul

At least ten people died and eight are missing after a

South Korean fishing charter boat capsized, the coastguard said yesterday, while three survived after clinging to the wreckage for 10 hours.

The 9.77-tonne Dolphin went missing off the southwest coast near the island of Chuja Saturday night and its wreckage was found yesterday morning.

The three survivors have been rescued and flown by

helicopter to a hospital on Jeju island south of Chuja.

“It has been determined that 21 people were on board the ill-fated boat, with three having been rescued, 10 found dead and eight missing,” Lee Pyung-hyun, chief of the Jeju coast guard, was quoted by Yonhap news agency as saying.

More than 50 naval and coastguard vessels, as well as a Lynx helicopter and a P-3C maritime patrol plane, were searching for the missing.

Doha

Qatar is apparently sending ground troops to Yemen,

following the death of at least 60 soldiers from the Gulf countries this week, according to widespread reports.

A spokesperson for Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs declined to comment on whether the nation’s military was becoming more involved in the ongoing clash between the Huthi rebels and the Yemeni government.

However, the spokesperson added he could neither confirm nor deny that the country was sending troop support.

Meanwhile, reactions to the possible news have been mainly supportive from people in the Gulf.

On Twitter, some prayed

for the soldiers’ protection and victory against the rebels, while others hailed the unity among the Gulf states taking part in the military offensive.

The possible deployment of Qatar troops comes days after dozens of Saudi and Emirati soldiers were killed in an explosion at a weapons store in central Yemen.

According to QNA, Qatar has expressed its condolences and said it stands in solidarity with Saudi Arabia and UAE following the deaths.

Qatar and several other GCC and Arab countries have been part of a Saudi-led military offensive in Yemen since it first began in March, expressing support for the government of exiled Yemeni president Abedrabbo Mansour

Hadi. According to Al Arabiya, Qatar had initially deployed 10 fighter jets to Yemen to participate in the offensive.

Early last month, the UAE sent a military brigade to Yemen to fight Huthi rebels, senior Yemeni and United

States military officials told the New York Times.

Since March, at least 1,950 civilians have been killed and 4,271 wounded in air strikes and fighting on the ground in Yemen, according to UN figures cited by the BBC.

Story of terrorBuenos Aires

An Argentine man kept his wife and autistic son

locked in a cage for years and forced the son to eat dog food and breathe gasoline fumes, a judicial source said on Saturday.

Inside the cage, made of bricks, wood and metal bars, bags of human excrement lay on the ground, as did dog food, used syringes, gasoline cans, locks, chains and rope which he apparently used to tie them up.

“This is a story of terror. To enter that house is to

witness true madness,” the source added.

The suspect is a 66-year-old former construction worker named Eduardo Oviedo.

His wife is 61 and the son 32. The son can barely speak and the wife has psychiatric problems, the source said.

Oviedo allegedly fed his wife and son through the bars of the cage.

Police acting on a tip from relatives of the family raided the house in the Argentine beach resort of Mar del Plata and arrested Oviedo.

He will be charged with kidnapping and keeping his family in conditions of servitude. Oviedo will also undergo a psychiatric evaluation.

He faces 15 years in prison if convicted, but because of aggravating circumstances his sentence could be as much as life behind bars.

Other children of Oviedo live in the same neighbourhood, but were afraid of him and remained silent. But eventually they reported him.

It is not clear how many years he kept his family in

these conditions. Both victims were in a hospital on Saturday.

One of Oviedo’s daughters-in-law described him as a violent man who often made threats, the judicial source said.

“Once he came with a hatchet in his hand when we asked him to bathe his wife and disabled son,” the daughter-in-law, whose name was not given, told investigators.

Oviedo put up no resistance when police raided the house. He denies the charges against him.

Plane bound for Senegal with seven on-board goes missing Dakar

An air and sea search was going on yesterday

for a medical evacuation plane carrying seven people, including a French patient, which went down off the coast of Senegal.

The twin-engine aircraft flying from Burkina Faso to Dakar disappeared from radars shortly after 7pm (1900 GMT) on Saturday over the Atlantic, 111 kilometres west of the Senegalese capital, Senegal’s civil aviation authority Anacim said in a statement.

Senegal’s air force was searching the area for wreckage of the plane that

left Burkina Faso’s capital Ouagadougou at 4:35pm (1635 GMT), according to airport sources in Burkina

Faso. Senegal’s state press service APS reported that search operations led by two air force planes and a navy

ship had continued through yesterday afternoon.

The plane, which had been due to arrive in Dakar at 6:20pm, belonged to the private Senegalair company, Anacim said.

No reason for why the plane seems to have overshot Dakar so far to the west when it crashed has thus far been given.

Senegal’s Futurs Medias news group reported that the aircraft was suspected of having run out of fuel.

Apart from the patient, the plane was carrying two Senegalese nurses and a doctor as well as a Congolese man and two Algerian crew members.

Independent probe doubts 43 Mexico students crematedMexico City

Independent foreign investigators refuted

yesterday the Mexican government’s conclusion that 43 students abducted last year were incinerated in a landfill, tearing apart the official probe into a case that caused international outrage.

Urging the authorities to keep looking for the students snatched by corrupt police a year ago, experts from the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights said there was no evidence that they were cremated in a bonfire.

After a six-month investigation, the panel released a nearly 500-page report that raises questions about the official account of a crime that sparked protests

and the biggest crisis of President Enrique Pena Nieto’s administration.

The document also calls for a probe into the actions of federal police and soldiers during the night of September 26-27, when municipal officers from the southern city of Iguala shot at buses that had been seized by the students.

The young men were mostly freshmen from a teaching college known for its leftist activism and practice of commandeering buses to move around Guerrero state.

The commission suggested that prosecutors open a new line of investigation into whether the students were attacked because they may have taken a bus criminals used to transport heroin.

Jordan takes in more than 250 wounded from Yemen warAmman

More than 250 people injured in Yemen’s

conflict were flown in to Jordan yesterday for hospital treatment, a medical official said, with emergency services at home overwhelmed with casualties.

The 266 patients included many young civilians, women and children, said Fawzi al Hammuri, chairman of Jordan’s Private Hospitals Association.

It was the largest group of Yemeni wounded to arrive in Amman since August under

an agreement struck between private Jordanian clinics and the Yemeni government.

“Most of the wounded are young civilians,” he said, adding that they have been admitted to 10 private hospitals in Jordan.

According to Hammuri, most of the wounded had bone injuries, while others had chest and stomach wounds caused by gunfire, explosions, bombs or burns.

They were flown in from Yemen’s second city Aden on two Yemeni planes, said Hammuri.

NO PLANS TO RETIRE: PACQUIAOGeneral Santos

Philippine boxing hero Manny Pacquiao hinted

he has several more fights left in him after his American promoter said he will likely retire next year.

Pacquiao played down remarks by promoter Bob Arum that he would fight just once more in 2016 before hanging up his gloves to run for Senate.

“I know better what is happening to my body,” Pacquiao defiantly said late

Saturday, reacting to Arum’s statement. “Just leave it alone. Better not to react to that,” he told reporters.

Arum was quoted on Thursday as saying that the 36-year-old Pacquiao wants to get on with his political career and run for the Senate in the Philippines.

“I believe he’ll take one more fight, then run for the Senate in the Philippines,” Arum said.

Pacquiao, who has won eight world championships in different weight divisions, has

previously parlayed his boxing fame into a career in showbiz and election as a congressman.

However he lost a unanimous decision to American Floyd Mayweather in Las Vegas four months ago in a fight that Pacquiao fought with a torn rotator cuff in his right shoulder.

Pacquiao has declined to say whether he will run for higher office in the 2016 national elections but has previously said he expects to fight again in April against an unnamed opponent.

Lewis Hamilton extended his lead, at least provisionally,

in this year’s drivers’ world championship to 53 points yesterday when he drove to a flawless and consummate victory in a typically dramatic Italian Grand Prix.

As nearest rival and Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosberg retired with a blown engine with two laps to go, Hamilton took full advantage on a day when his perfect drive ended amid chaotic scenes and reports that his car had raced with illegal tyre pressures.

Hamilton led from pole position to the chequered flag, leading all the way and surviving a nervous period during the final laps when, warned by his team, he became aware of possible performance problems.

His points advantage, with seven ‘flyaway’ races remaining after the last European race of the season, makes him a clear favourite to defend his crown and claim his third world title.

The newly-blond defending two-time world champion came home 25 seconds ahead of Sebastian Vettel of Ferrari with former local hero Felipe Massa finishing third for Williams, repeating his podium of last year.

Hamilton’s win if confirmed was his second in succession at the Autodromo Nazionale, his third in all at the famous old circuit, his seventh of the season and 40th of his career.

“Those last few laps were not cool man,” Hamilton told his engineer over the team radio, after being asked to push harder and not ask questions. “Not cool.”

Behind Massa, Valtteri Bottas came home fourth in the second Williams ahead of

Kimi Raikkonen in the second Ferrari and Sergio Perez of Force India.

Nico Hulkenberg was seventh in the second Force India ahead of Australian Daniel Ricciardo of Red Bull, Swede Marcus Ericsson of Sauber and Russian Daniil Kvyat in the second Red Bull.

As the race ended, it became clear that the result was under scrutiny and expected to remain unconfirmed until the outcome of a stewards’ inquiry into the starting pressures and temperatures of the McLaren cars.

Bizzarely, this postscript unfolded as the Star Wars film director George Lucas conducted the post-race podium interviews.

“Do blondes have more

fun?” Lucas asked Hamilton, who had dyed his hair before arriving in Italy. “I hope so,” he replied.

“Look at this crowd, it’s incredible,” added Hamilton who, not knowing what else

had happened, went on to praise his team. “This team is remarkable. What we’ve achieved together is so special .

“I’m incredibly grateful to them. They’ve done a great job all year.” (AFP)

De f e n d i n g c h a m p i o n

Marin Cilic and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga set-up a US Open quarter-final clash on Sunday as world number one Novak Djokovic waited to take another step closer to a 10th Grand Slam title.

Cilic made the last-eight for the fourth time

with a 6-3, 2-6, 7-6 (7/2) 6-1 win over France’s Jeremy Chardy.

Cilic, the Croatian ninth seed, took his record in New York to 11 successive wins after capturing his maiden Grand Slam title in the city last year.

But the 26-year-old had to overcome an injury scare in the

second set to stay alive in the tournament when he rolled his right ankle.

“I twisted my ankle in the second set but I tried not to let it affect my movement,” he said.

“In the first few games of the third set, I was conscious of it but after that I didn’t have trouble with it.”

Cilic fired 23 aces and 52 winners in his win over Chardy, one of four Frenchmen to make the last-16.

Four of those aces came in the third set tiebreak.

“I took the joker from Goran in the tiebreak,” he said, explaining his inspiration from coach and big-hitting former Wimbledon champion Goran Ivanisevic.

French 19th seed Tsonga reached his second quarter-final in

New York with a 6-4, 6-3, 6-4 win over unseeded compatriot Benoit Paire, the man who opened up their section of the draw by knocking out fourth seed Kei Nishikori in the first round.

The 30-year-old Tsonga, who made the semi-finals at the French Open in June, did not face a single break point against Paire.

He has now held all 56 service games at the tournament.

Cilic holds a 4-1 career lead over Tsonga in main tour matches, winning the pair’s last three without dropping a set.

Tsonga’s only win was in the 2011 Cincinnati Masters.

“I have the feeling that I am playing my best

tennis and I hope this will continue,” said Tsonga, who made the quarter-finals four years ago.

“It’s been a great week. I hope for the same again

in the next few days.”Later yesterday,

Djokovic goes under the lights of Arthur

Ashe Stadium to face Spanish 23rd seed Roberto Bautista Agut.

The top seed has

won both their p r e v i o u s matches, which came on the hard courts of Dubai in 2013 and 2014.

D j o k o v i c , bidding for a

third Grand Slam title of the year after winning a fifth Australian Open and third Wimbledon, hasn’t dropped a set in the

tournament.

Serena and Venus Williams advanced to a dramatic US

Open quarter-final showdown with straight-set triumphs yesterday while Canada’s Eugenie Bouchard withdrew from her fourth-round match due to a concussion.

World number one Serena Williams served well in moving within three match victories of a rare calendar Grand Slam with a 6-3, 6-3 triumph over US 19th seed Madison Keys.

Serena made only six unforced errors to 19 for Keys and hit 58 per cent of her first serves. She took 79pc of those points and 70pc on her second serves, nearly twice Keys’ second-try effectiveness.

“I’m so proud. I’m so glad it’s so much better,” Serena said of her serve.

“My only chance was to start out fast. I just stayed in there and was able to relax.”

Venus, seeded 23rd, downed 152nd-ranked Estonian teen qualifier Anett Kontaveit 6-2, 6-1 at Arthur Ashe Stadium, matching her deepest Grand Slam run since reaching the 2010 US Open semi-finals.

“We’re both prepared,” Venus said. “Even though you’re playing your sister you have to be prepared and focus. The preparation doesn’t change.”

Serena, who holds all four major tennis titles, is trying to complete the first calendar Grand Slam since Steffi Graf in 1988 and match Graf’s Open

Era record of 22 career Slam singles titles by capturing her Open Era record seventh US Open crown.

But Venus, two years older than Serena at 35, could play the spoiler as she tries to add to a trophy collection that includes the 2000 and 2001 US Opens and five Wimbledon titles, the most recent in 2008.

“I don’t think anyone wants to be a spoiler. I think people love to see history being made,” Venus said.

“But at the same time, you’re focused on winning your match even though the circumstances are really much different than you.”

Bouchard, who suffered a head injury after slipping in the locker room late Friday, pulled out of her match against Italy’s Roberta Vinci with what US Open tournament director David Brewer said was a concussion.

Bouchard had pulled out of mixed and women’s doubles on Saturday.

The 21-year-old from Montreal was a French and Australian Open semi-finalist last year and lost the 2014 Wimbledon final to Petra Kvitova.

Her head injury to a season of setbacks, including first-round French Open and Wimbledon exits and a 12-17 record.

Vinci advanced by walkover to her third US Open quarter-final in four years to match her deepest Grand Slam run.

She next faces the winner of a later match between Russian 13th seed

Ekaterina Makarova and France’s Kristina Mladenovic.

Serena leads the Williams sibling rivalry 15-11 but they have split four US Open meetings, including the 2001 and 2002 finals.

Serena won their most recent matchup in the fourth round at Wimbledon in July.

“Awesome. It has been awesome,” Venus said when asked about her sibling rivalry.

“I’m so proud of Serena and I think she’s proud of me. We inspire each other.”

Serena won her first set in 27 minutes, Keys handing her the lone break in the sixth game.

Serena hit a backhand winner to break Keys for a 4-3 edge in the second set and broke again on match point when Keys, who also lost to Serena in the Australian Open semi-finals, double faulted to end matters after 68 minutes and ensure an all-Williams showdown.

“She is playing great,” Serena said of Venus. “I have to play like I did today or better. But at least one of us, a Williams, will be in the semis, so that’s good.”

Venus, who lost the 1997 US Open final to Martina Hingis when Kontaveit was 21 months old, broke in the fourth game and again in the eighth, Kontaveit hitting a forehand long to drop the set after 24 minutes.
