UPCOMING WORKSHOPS

Velda Newman, known for her large scale, mostly organic designs, is an internationally recognized contemporary quilt artist, author and lecturer from a tiny town in Northern California. Velda creates original quilts of exceptional beauty and craftsmanship. For the past 18 years Velda's work has appeared in many national and international

exhibitions and has been featured in over 30 publications, including Quilter's Newsletter and Threads magazine.

Velda’s workshop, held on Saturday, October 10, was a revelation. There were only 10 present, and I don’t think anyone there will ever forget the day. We started out making a large basket using her remarkable technique for

creating depth and texture. Then moved on to making lemons, seriously, using thread like it was going out of style. Next was a secret technique to make leaves look pieced when they are not. I would share how we accomplished

this task. . . but then it wouldn’t be a secret!!! That’s why we have workshops: to learn and expand our skills.

We also used cheesecloth and followed her directions to embellish a pumpkin. Doesn’t sound like a big deal, but the results were stunning. And last but not least was a seashell we all made by sewing and cutting away to reveal a

unique sample.

Frances Moore, said the workshop forever changed her perception of what is possible. This was an amazing compliment from a member and LA based teacher. Another local talent and instructor, Ann Leibovitz, rarely raised

her head to chat. She was that focused. It was a small intimate class that laughed a lot and learned more.

Velda was a humble and lovely person and teacher. I can’t remember another instructor helping to clean up the room after a class. Her lecture on October 8 was one for the ages. You didn’t even feel it was a slide show; it was so well done. For those of you who missed it I strongly urge you to go to her website at www.veldanewman.com to

get a glimpse of her artistry.

As many of our guild members have allergies, please do not wear perfume/cologne or bring anything scented, such as Mary Ellen’s Best Press, to the workshops. Your co-operation in making these gatherings a pleasure for all is

much appreciated.

Unless otherwise stated, fees are $30 for members and $40 for non-members.

NICKELS AND/OR NOODLES EXCHANGE Due to lack of interest, the Nickels and/or Noodles

Exchange has been cancelled.

Quilt Guild Bingo Quilter Cathy Busch provided this “quilty” version of bingo to Fons & Porter and they published it in their September/October 2006 issue. We will be playing this game at our December meeting so start making your “bingo” quilt blocks now. These blocks will be your “bingo” cards so make a lot -

the more you make, the better your odds at winning. We are still looking for the buttons so be prepared with your own markers. If you don’t have enough buttons, try paper clips or anything else you care to use. If you don’t want to keep your blocks after the meeting, please give them to

Randy after the game. Community Relations will be joining them into quilts for donations or setting up kits.

Game Card Instructions Each fabric must be chosen from one of the following categories: batik, holiday, dot, leaf, floral,

metallic, geometric, novelty, heart, paisley, plaid, solid, star, stripe, or 30’s. Use black for the center square. Each fabric can represent only one category - in other words, use 25 unique

fabrics, no duplicates. Also, each column must have 5 different categories (so don’t go putting 2 florals in one column ☺).

Thank you so much to Dawn Hoyle. Dawn made extra blocks for our guests who will be attending our December General Meeting.

Here is one of Dawn’s blocks. It contains a great example. See the bottom row, second square from the left (framed in white)- it has a red, cream and green stripe in it. However, since Dawn

sewed it into the red column, it will only qualify as a red stripe during the game.

Materials for 1 card (10 1/2 inches)

5 - 2 1/2” squares assorted yellow and orange prints 5 - 2 1/2” squares assorted red prints 5 - 2 1/2” squares assorted blue prints 5 - 2 1/2” squares assorted green prints 4 - 2 1/2” squares assorted pink and purple prints 1 - 2 1/2” square black print/solid

Block Assembly 1. Referring to the sample, join 5 yellow/orange print squares to

make 1 column. In the same manner, make 1 red, 1 blue, and 1 green column.

2. Join 2 pink/purple squares. Make 2 pairs. Join one pair to each side of the black square.

3. Join columns, placing pink/purple row in the center to complete one Bingo Game Card block. The other columns can be in any order.

The end of the year draws near and the holiday season will be in full gear. QBS had a lovely holiday and artist's boutique in October. Now, QBS will be gearing up for a holiday potluck in December as well as the annual distribution of quilts and donations to the charities we support.

Please take a few moments to read the wish lists of these charities and see what you would like to contribute and Community Relations does love to receive quilts!

The current board ends its term in December but I would like to extend the heartiest of thanks to all of the board members and helpers of the various committees for all of their hard work and support this year. I couldn't have done it without you!

May all of you have a wonderful Thanksgiving this month and see you at the meeting!

The Story About Grandma’s Aprons The principal use of Grandma's apron was to protect the

dress underneath, because she only had a few. It was easier to wash aprons than dresses, and they used less material; but along with that, it served as a potholder for removing

hot pans from the oven. It was wonderful for drying children's tears, and on occasion was even used for cleaning

out dirty ears. From the chicken coop, the apron was used for carrying

eggs, fussy chicks, and sometimes half-hatched eggs to be finished in the warming oven. When company came, those aprons were ideal hiding places for shy kids. And when the weather was cold,

grandma wrapped it around her arms. Those big old aprons wiped many a perspiring brow, bent over the hot wood stove. Chips and

kindling wood were brought into the kitchen in that apron. From the garden, it carried all sorts of vegetables. After the peas had been shelled, it carried out the hulls. In the fall, the apron was

used to bring in apples that had fallen from the trees. When unexpected company drove up the road, it was surprising how much furniture that old apron could dust in a matter of seconds. When dinner was ready, Grandma walked out onto the porch, waved her apron, and the men knew it was time to come in from the fields to dinner. It will be a

long time before someone invents something that will replace that ' old-time apron' that served so many purposes. Thank you to Kasey for sending this in.

Understanding Quality and Discount Fabric Condensed from All Things Frugal: Home of the Pennypincher & The Tightwad Tidbits Ezines (http://www.allthingsfrugal.com/fabric.htm ). Collecting fabric can become a passion. After a few years, you KNOW fabric! You know the names of designers and manufacturers. You can easily tell a Thimbleberries fabric and one designed by Debbie Mum. You know when you see a fabric on sale for 50% off if it is truly a bargain. If you are on a budget, like most of us, quilt shop fabric is only purchased on sale in a quilt store or online. So for many the challenge becomes finding less expensive fabric that is still good quality fabric.

Here are some things to look for:

100% Cotton: Cotton is the fabric of choice. It wears well, is easily pressed, quilted, and sewn. You can often mark it with a crease by just finger pressing. This is useful when you want to fold the fabric in half to find the center and mark it to match with another piece. Grain is usually straight, and you can nip the edge of the selvage and evenly tear the fabric.

Thread Count: Quality fabric is tightly woven. Discount fabric comes in a wide range of thread counts. If you can see through a fabric, it is poor quality. You will learn to recognize sufficient thread count by the feel of the fabric. If the fabric is very stiff, it probably has a low thread count. Look for density in the fibers, and a soft, supple feel. It is also a plus if the design goes through the fabric to the back. When you pre-wash an inferior fabric with a low thread count, the threads will ravel and the fabrics will become twisted and knotted in the washing machine.

Pattern and Color: A quality fabric will have the pattern evenly placed on the fabric grain lines. The pattern will also show on the back.

Finishing: All fabric has been treated with chemicals and given finishes. This is why you often can’t tell the quality of a fabric by touch. The more economical fabrics will seem a lot lighter. The better fabrics have had more care taken with the fibers and are not as heavily impacted by washing.
