2009 northwestern women’s soccer • NUsports.com2

Last season your team was able to win 10 games and pull off a few signature wins against Big Ten teams. What were some of the most important factors in your 2008 success?“The biggest change the past few years has been in our team’s culture. Our players are 100 percent committed, our work ethic is impeccable and it gives us more confidence to know we’ve put the time into preparation. We have a chance to win every time we step on the field now and the next step for our program is to win a few of those close games that we haven’t been able to pull out in the past. I also think back to some of the wins that we had and am so proud of the

fight we displayed in order to pull them out—whether it was Amanda Hoffman scoring a hat trick when we were down 2-0 in the second half against DePaul, winning overtime games on the road at Pepperdine and Iowa, or getting a goal from Jenny Dunn in the 87th minute to beat Nebraska 4-3. Our team saw firsthand what it meant to battle for a full 90 minutes, or more, regardless of what the score was and I think that mentality will carry over into this season.”

How impressed were you with the contribu-tions of your true freshmen in 2008 and do you see a chance for any of your incoming freshmen to see significant time this year?“My attitude toward true freshmen has always been that if they end up playing a big role on the field, it’s a huge bonus. Especially in a fall sport, it’s so difficult for a freshman to come right in and adjust to a different level of play. I was really pleased with the performance of last year’s group and when you get as much playing time as Emily Langston, Nicole Duller, Jill Dunn and Sarah Sroka got as freshmen, you’re way ahead as a sophomore. That whole class is going to be

crucial to the success of our program. I’m expecting Catherine Parish, who was the high school player of the year in Oklahoma last year, to be some-one who can step in and help our team win right away and the same goes for Kendall Thoreson and Briana Westlund, who each enjoyed a lot of success for their club and high school teams.”

This year’s group of seniors is the first class to play for you throughout their four-year careers at NU. What are your thoughts on the leader-ship they can provide this season?“I think it’s a huge benefit to have the same staff working with a group of kids for four years with no turnover in coaches, and that’s something that is becoming more and more rare these days. Ali (Rubnitz), Kay (Sampson), Alicia (Herczeg), Jessica (Palo) and Leigh (Jakes) have absorbed everything we’ve tried to teach them from the day our coaching staff got here and they have never batted an eye. They’re absolutely re-sponsible for the change in culture we’ve seen and they’ve been excellent leaders within our program. They didn’t expect to have us as coaches when they decided to come to NU but we’re so thankful for their trust and leadership.”

What are a few of your on-field strengths heading into this season?“We’ll be a lot more organized defensively than we have been in the past. That’s due in large part to the fact that we’re going to have plenty of experience on the field, from Carolyn Edwards or Grace Weitz in goal up to Nicole Duller, Ali Rubnitz, Sarah Sroka and other members of our back line. That’s something that gives us a lot of confidence. That will also allow us to spend a lot more time in preseason on our attack, making it much more dynamic and sophisticated in the way we go about progressing the ball up the field.

We’re certainly interested to see who emerges as goal-scorers since recently our scoring has been generally balanced. Kelsey Bertamus is coming back after an injury her freshman year and we really think she’s someone who can develop as a consistent threat up top for us.”

What’s one theme or message that you are stressing to your squad this season?“It’s all about preparation. I feel confident that, this year, we’re going to come into preseason and be ready to get right down to business. We won’t be spending much time in training camp having to get fit which is something I’m really excited about. Soccer is way more fun when condition-ing isn’t your focus. Our student-athletes have embraced that message and bought into it. Beyond that, we really want to make sure that each one of our players comes to practice and certainly to games as prepared—mentally and physically—as they can be to compete at a high level. That’s difficult to do over the course of a season that lasts almost four months but it’s nec-essary if we’re going to reach the level of success we’re striving for.”

“I think the biggest change the past few years has been in our team’s culture. Our players are 100 percent committed, their work ethic is impeccable and it gives them more confidence to know they’ve put the time into preparation.” —Stephanie Erickson

Stephanie Erickson, Northwestern’s former all-time leader in goals and points, returned to her alma mater as head coach on July 3,

2006, and is in her fourth season at the helm of the Wildcats. With its first 10-win season since 2004 and fifth in program history, Northwestern continued its climb back to prominence under Erickson in 2008. NU has improved its win total in each year under the former Wildcat standout and finished the Big Ten regular season in a tie for fifth place with a 5-5 record after a preseason conference coaches’ poll slotted the Wildcats 10th. Five conference wins were the most for the ’Cats since 2004 and

just the third time in school history that mark has been achieved. NU posted a 9-7-4 mark in Erickson’s second year, during which two Wildcats posted 20-point sea-sons in Kelsey Hans (10 g, 4 a) and

Shannon Schneeman (9 g, 2 a). The 2007 season saw two of Erickson’s NU offensive records fall

as Hans passed her coach for first place in both goals

and points as a Wildcat. In her first season as head coach of the Wildcats, Erickson led the team to

a record of 8-10-2. The team showed instant improvement under her command by win-ning two more Big Ten games than the previous season.

Before taking the reins in Evanston, Erickson served as head

coach at Harvard University in 2005 and led the Crimson to an 8-5-3 record. Erickson’s squad led the Ivy League and ranked sixth nationally in goals-against average, allowing a total of just eight goals in 16 games and 11 shutouts, including a 1-0 victory over 20th-ranked Ohio State. Erickson mentored four players to all-Ivy League honors and three to NSCAA all-Northeast Regional all-America honors. Prior to her arrival at Harvard, Erickson served as the top assistant at Northwestern in 2004, where she helped her alma mater reach the Big Ten Tournament after a three-year hiatus. The Wildcats finished in the top half of the Big Ten standings, won 10 games and finished with a winning record in conference play for the first time since 1998. After beginning her coaching career at California in 1998, where she helped the Golden Bears to the Pac-10 title and an NCAA bid, Erickson went to Harvard as an assistant on the 1999 Crimson team which went 14-2-1 and was ranked as high as fifth in the nation at the end of the regular-season. The team captured three in-season tournament titles, its fourth Ivy title in five seasons and earned its first-ever seeding in the NCAA Tournament. In 2000 she joined the Stanford coaching staff, where she recruited three classes ranked in the top 10 nationally and

helped the Cardinal reach the NCAA Women’s College Cup each season with a combined record of 60-21-5 in her four-year tenure. In 2002, she served as the interim co-head coach and helped guide the Cardinal to a No. 1 national ranking, a 21-2-0 record, a Pac-10 title and a spot in the NCAA quarterfinals. The Stanford staff earned National Coach of the Year honors from Soccer America at the conclusion of the season. Erickson was a four-year starting forward for the Wildcats, amass-ing 29 goals and 73 points. She earned the Wildcats’ Offensive Most Valuable Player honors in 1994, 1996 and 1997 and helped lead NU to an NCAA Tournament bid in 1996 when she was named second-team all-Big Ten and captured the league scoring title. In addition, Erickson scored a pair of goals in a span of five seconds to set the NCAA record for fastest consecutive goals scored in a game. Erickson graduated from Northwestern in 1998 with a bachelor of science in secondary education and Spanish. She was a three-time academic all-Big Ten selection and a member of the Dean’s List from 1996-98. Erickson resides in Wilmette and has a daughter, 5-year-old Xiah.

Former Wildcat Erin Ekeberg is in her fourth season as an assistant coach at Northwestern. A three-year starter between the pipes for

the ’Cats from 1998-2000, she works primarily with the goalkeepers and plays an integral role in recruiting. “Northwestern women’s soccer is very fortunate to have Erin at her alma mater as an assistant coach,” Erickson said. “Not only is she instrumental in training our goalkeepers, she offers one of the sharpest minds and an incredible passion for Northwestern. She is extremely gifted in building strong relationships with our players.” In her three seasons, the Wildcats have posted 19 total shutouts, including blanking nine opponents in 2007 and five more in 2008. Ekeberg, a three-time academic all-Big Ten selec-tion, graduated cum laude from Northwestern in June of 2001, receiving her bach-elor’s degree in environmen-tal sciences. After working for one season as an assistant coach at California in 2001, she then went on to receive her law degree from Georgetown University Law Center in May of 2005 where she was on the Dean’s List all four years. Before returning to NU, she spent a year working as a litigation associate in New York City. Ekeberg’s name is still etched in the Northwestern record books with the all-time leaders in Wildcat history, including the record for most minutes played by a goalkeeper in one season (2,027 in 1998). She is second all-time with 281 career saves and third with 5,206 minutes and 13 shutouts. Her seven shutouts in 1998 still rank second on the all-time single-season list. She notched 13 saves in the 1998 NCAA round of 16 match against eventual national champion Florida. She also served as co-captain and won team MVP honors as a senior in 2000. The Palatine, Ill., native has experience as a soccer broadcaster as well, serving as a play-by-play spotter for the San Jose Cyber Rays of the Women’s United Soccer Association in the spring of 2002.

Danielle Slaton is in her fourth season as an assistant coach after play-ing for five years in the professional ranks as a member of the U.S.

Women’s National Team and with the Olympique Lyonnais in France. “Danielle is one of the best defenders this nation has produced,” Erickson said. “She has had an amazing playing career as a collegiate athlete, in the former women’s professional league (WUSA) and with the U.S. National Team. Danielle has incredible tactical knowledge and is instrumental in recruiting as well. She adds a wonderful dynamic to our staff and we are extremely fortunate that Danielle remains with us for her fourth season at Northwestern.” Northwestern’s defense has seen amazing improvement under Slaton’s tutelage, posting 19 shut-outs over three seasons. In 2007, the Wildcats posted a streak of over 388 minutes of shutout soccer and put up six shutouts in Big Ten play. Slaton was a five-year member of the U.S. National Team from 2000-05 that won a silver medal at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia and a member of the third place 2003 World Cup squad. She was a starting defender on the French First Division team Olympique Lyonnais and a mem-ber of the runner-up French Cup Tournament team in 2005. As a collegian at Santa Clara University, Slaton was a four-year starter, a three-time first-team All-America defender and team captain for the Broncos from 1998-2001. She helped lead the Broncos to the 2001 NCAA Championship as a senior and was named the NCAA College Cup Defensive MVP that same year. She was a four-time first-team all-West Coast Conference selection, the 1998 WCC Freshman of the Year and 2001 Defender of the Year. Slaton started 79-of-84 games during her college career, scoring 50 points on eight goals and 34 assists. Also a standout performer in the classroom, Slaton was named the 2001 NCAA Scholar Athlete of the Year and graduated magna cum laude with a 3.74 grade-point-average. After her collegiate career Slaton was the drafted first overall by the Carolina Courage in the 2002 Women’s United Soccer Association draft. That year she led the Courage to the WUSA Championship and was named the league’s defender of the year. Before coming to Northwestern, Slaton served as an assistant coach at Evergreen Valley High School in San Jose, Calif., and as assistant and head coach at the Capital Area Soccer League in Raleigh, N.C. Slaton gained broadcasting experience in 2009 while serving as color analyst for the Chicago Red Stars of Women’s Professional Soccer.

L A K E S I D E F I E L DNorthwestern’s Lakeside Field hosted its first game on

September 12, 2007 and hosted its first night contest on November 2, 2007. Lakeside Field is home to North-western’s men’s soccer, women’s soccer and women’s lacrosse programs. Located along the shores of scenic Lake Michigan and with a clear view of downtown Chicago in sight, the facility is one of the best of its kind in all of collegiate soccer and certainly one of the most picturesque. Lakeside Field features a new scoreboard, a game operations box, permanent stands for 2,000 fans and lights for night games. FieldTurf, the company responsible for the playing sur-face, has informed Northwestern that the field has received a FIFA 2-Star Certification—making it the first field installed by FieldTurf to receive such a distinction.

Lakeside Field has emerged as one of the premier soccer venues in the nation. The surface is impeccably consistent and provides FIFA two-star quality for our student-athletes and visiting teams. With the Chicago skyline to the South, Lake Michigan to the East and our incredible institution, Northwestern University, to the North and West, it is impossi-ble to beat the setting and views. Lakeside Field already has enhanced our program and will continue to make us incred-ibly competitive with recruiting and our on-field success.

When it comes to giving back to the Evanston and Northwestern communities, Stephanie Erickson’s women’s

soccer program has found numerous ways to make a difference. In 2009, Erickson’s squad was the winner of Northwestern’s PRIDE Award as the athletic program with the most total community service hours.

“The minute you commit yourself to community service you immediately see the benefits and feel how rewarding the experience can be,” Erickson said. “Our girls are motivated and inspired by the kids they work with and feel really fortunate to be in a position to have a positive influence on young people.”

Here is a look at a few of the recent community service initiatives in which Erickson and her student-athletes have participated.

nU Posts fifth 10-win season in Program history

With its first 10-win season since 2004 and fifth in program history, Northwestern continued its climb back to prominence under head

coach Stephanie Erickson in 2008. NU has improved its win total in each year under the former Wildcat standout and finished the Big Ten regular season in a tie for fifth place with a 5-5 record after a preseason conference coaches’ poll slotted the Wildcats 10th. Individually, four Wildcats earned Big Ten Conference honors with seniors Jenny Dunn, Laura Janowitsch and Jeanette Lorme each making the all-Big Ten second team. Freshman defender Nicole Duller earned a spot on the all-freshman team. Senior Amanda Hoffman, who had a team-leading six-goal season after not recording a single tally in her first three years, was NU’s Big Ten Sportsmanship Award nominee. NU’s record books look different following the 2008 campaign, with several ’Cats climbing the school’s all-time lists in various categories. Dunn entered her senior season outside of NU’s offensive top-10 categories but a spectacular campaign vaulted her to a place alongside Northwestern’s all-time greats. With 16 career assists, Dunn moved into third place all-time. Her 50 career points are good for sixth and her 17 career goals rank ninth. Just a sophomore, Sam Greene took advantage of 19 starts to already make her mark in several offensive categories. Her eight assists in 2008 was the fourth-highest single season total in NU history, while her 12 overall helpers ranks sixth on the Wildcats’ all-time list. Carolyn Edwards, in her first season as starting goalkeeper, finished with five shutouts and 75 saves. Her save total and 1.47 GAA are good for eighth all-time. With 1,779 minutes played in 2008, Edwards sits seventh on NU’s all-time list, and she is fifth all-time with five shutouts. NU opened the 2008 season on the right note with a 4-3 win over Nebraska at Lakeside Field—a game in which all seven goals came in the second half. Dunn recorded her first of two game-winning goals in the 87th minute, scoring on a rebound in the box to lift the ’Cats to victory. The Wildcats posted a 1-1 record in the Lakeside Invitational, falling 2-0 to LSU before downing Illinois State, 1-0. The ’Cats recorded another split in their second tournament—the Pepperdine Nike Challenge in Malibu, Calif.—falling to San Diego before topping Pepperdine in overtime. Against the Waves, NU overcame a two-goal deficit and got a game-winner

from Janowitsch. NU defeated a pair of local foes in Loyola (Chicago) and DePaul by putting up three goals in each contest. Against the Blue Demons, NU trailed 2-0 in the second half when Hoffman recorded the school’s first hat trick since 2004 to propel Northwestern to a 3-2 win. Northwestern picked up its first conference win Sept. 28 when it downed then-17th-ranked Illinois by a 1-0 mark. Lorme’s first goal of the year proved to be the game-winner and Edwards

picked up one of her five shutouts in net. The Wildcats dropped a pair of 1-0 decisions at Penn State and Ohio State to sit at 1-3 in the Big Ten entering a three-game home stand. NU got a timely game-winning goal from junior Kay Sampson to down Indiana, 2-1, on Oct. 12. After a defeat at the hands of Michigan State, Northwest-ern got its first of back-to-back wins with a 1-0 victory over Michigan Oct. 19. On Senior Day it was fitting that Dunn scored the match’s lone goal on a volley off a pass from fellow senior Lorme. NU then climbed to .500 in the Big Ten with a 3-2 double-overtime win at Iowa. Alicia Herczeg and Greene also scored, but Hoffman’s team-best sixth goal was the game-winner in the 106th minute. Needing a win to make the Big Ten Tournament, NU got a goal in the 81st minute from Herczeg to down Wisconsin in Madison, 1-0, Oct. 31.

The win gave NU a 5-5 conference mark and a tie for fifth place in the conference. The goal was Herczeg’s fifth career game-winner. Five Big Ten wins are the most for the Wild-cats since 2004 and just the third time in school history the mark has been acheived. NU continues to improve under Stephanie Erickson, whose leadership has shown the ’Cats are a program on the rise.

Scullion is the only player in Northwestern soccer history to garner Big Ten Player of the Year (1998) and Big Ten Freshman of the Year (1996) honors. She also picked up Soccer Buzz third-team all-America honors in 1998, a year in which the Wildcats posted the best record in school history (16-5-1 overall and 6-3 in the Big Ten), en route to a third-round NCAA Tournament appearance. The midfielder was a four-time all-Big Ten selection, earning first-team honors in 1996, ’97 and ’98. Scullion also was a two-time NSCAA all-Great Lakes Region honoree (1996 and ’98). She concluded her career with 14 goals and 11 assists (seventh all-time). Scullion graduated from NU in 2000 with a degree in history and has since worked in the corporate environment as a tax consultant and pharmaceutical sales representative. She has also remained involved with soccer as an assistant coach with DePaul University’s women’s soccer program (2007-08).

on feb. 27, 2009, northwestern’s athletic hall of fame inducted its 25th class, a class that featured a special first among its five members. Erica westrich scullion (1996-99) became the first wildcat soccer player—men’s or women’s—to enter nU’s Hall of fame.

“Since graduating from Northwestern, it has always been a goal of mine to give back to a place that has given me so much. As a former student-athlete, I had access to the necessary tools required to succeed both in the classroom and on the soccer field. Top-notch facilities, unbelievable academic support and most importantly, outstanding coaching, helped me have a rewarding collegiate soccer career. Recently, inspired by the dynamic leadership of (NU head football coach) Pat Fitzgerald, my husband and I wanted to do our part in continuing to build Northwestern’s tradition of athletic excellence.”

“Erica was one of the most significant additions to Northwestern University soccer during my tenure there. Not only was she Big Ten Freshman of the Year and Big Ten Player of the Year as a junior, but she also was a wonderful person to have on the team. She knew when to lead and when to follow and always put the team above herself. I was very happy to see her inducted into the Northwestern Athletic Hall of Fame—it was a well deserved honor reflecting her great contribution as an athlete and person.”

—MARCIA McDERMOTT NU HEAD COACH, 1994-2000

“In my opinion, Erica is one of the best players to ever come through the Northwestern program. No one else has earned the awards that she has or been as dynamic a player as she was. Just as exciting is that since graduating, Erica has never been far from our program. She has always come back and supported the Wildcats. She’s setting the standard of how to give back to Northwestern women’s soccer, for which we are extremely grateful and appreciative.”

After four years as the head women’s soccer coach at Morehead State in Kentucky, Erin aubry was named the head coach at the University of Arkansas on Dec. 23, 2008. In her final season at Morehead

State, Aubry took the Eagles to unprecedented heights by guiding them to their first Ohio Valley

Aubry came to NU as a freshman in the school’s inaugural season of women’s soccer in 1994. Former Wildcat shannon schneeman earned the opportunity to participate in preseason camp with the Chicago Red Stars of the new Women’s Profes-sional Soccer League in 2009. Schneeman, who finished her Northwestern career fourth on NU’s

all-time points list, was chosen from a pool of 70 players at the team’s open tryout. Prior to her go with the Red Stars, Schnee-man spent time playing professionally in Finland alongside lauren Johnston.

In addition to current NU coaches Stephanie Erickson and Erin Ekeberg, a number of other Northwestern women’s soccer players have gone on to enjoy success playing and coaching the game they love after graduation, both domestically and abroad.

A two-year starter for the Wildcats, 2007 graduate lauren Johnston (pictured) left Northwestern tied for first on the

school’s season shutouts list with nine and in sole possession of third place on the career list with 15. Johnston took her game overseas after graduation, enjoying stints in Finland and London before settling in with Danish club Odense Boldklub (OB). Johnston kept in touch with the Wildcat community while in season by authoring a blog

that appeared on Northwestern’s official athletics Web site, NUsports.com.

susie Mccreery (now Foster) took over as the head women’s soccer coach at Carthage College prior to the 2005 season after serving as an assistant in 2003 and 2004. In four years at the helm, McCreery has guided the Lady Reds to a 55-20-6 record and helped Carthage earn a berth in the NCAA Division III Championships each of the last two seasons. McCreery graduated from North-western in 2002 and still holds the school record for career goals against average (1.23), which included a slim 1.04 average in 2001.

The undergraduate population is about 54 percent women, and just under 30 percent are African American, Hispanic or Asian American. Total enrollment is approx imately 17,000, including 1,100 part-time students in evening programs of the School of Continuing Studies.

• Undergraduate financial aid is need based. More than half of all Northwestern undergraduates receive some combination of need-based scholarships, student loans and work-study employment.

• Among the more than 50 fellowships awarded to students or alumni in 2008–09 were two Rhodes, one Marshall, four Gates Cambridge and 32 Fulbright Scholarships.

• Among graduate programs, the J.L. Kellogg School of Management regularly ranks among the top five business schools in the country for both its traditional curriculum and its executive master’s program.

• U.S. News & World Report placed Northwestern’s School of Law in the top 10 law schools nationally and the Feinberg School of Medicine in the top 20 medical programs. In its most recent assess-ment of doctoral programs, the National Research Council ranked five Northwestern programs in the top 10 percent nationally and 10 programs in the top 25 percent.

northwestern University was founded in 1851 as a private institution of “the highest order of excellence” to serve the Northwest Territory, an

area that now includes the states of Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin and part of Minnesota.

Today one of the nation’s premier universities, Northwestern occupies two campuses along the shore of Lake Michigan and is connected by both geography and programming to one of the nation’s great cities, Chicago. In addition, Northwestern has a campus in Doha, Qatar. In this midsize research university, 11 schools—each with relatively small academic depart-ments—offer high-quality programs spanning a remarkably diverse portfolio. Northwestern is recognized both nationally and internationally for the quality of its educational programs at all levels. U.S. News & World Report consistently ranks the University’s undergraduate and gradu-ate programs among the best in the country.

The JUdd a. and MaRJORiE wEinBERG cOllEGE Of aRts and sciEncEs is the largest of Northwestern’s undergraduate schools with more than 4,000 undergraduate students and 500 faculty members. It is the corner-stone of a University that believes study in the liberal arts and sciences is the foundation of a strong undergradu-ate education. Students may enhance their studies with independent research projects, ad hoc majors or minors, Chicago field studies and study abroad. The scHOOl Of cOMMUnicatiOn offers opportunities for study in five top-ranking departments: communication sciences and disorders, communication studies, performance studies, radio/television/film and theatre. Cocurricular opportunities include the top debate team in the country, hospital internships, student video and film projects, theater productions and the largest student-run college radio station in the country.

The scHOOl Of EdUcatiOn and sOcial POlicY started as a depart-ment in the College of Liberal Arts and became a separate school of education in 1926. “Social policy” was added to its name in 1986 to reflect a distinctive mission among schools of education—to understand and improve learning communities (schools and classrooms, workplace settings, families and neighborhoods), to study lifelong learning and to improve lives through policy. By producing scholarly research that informs and influences public policy-making about education, this small school (350 undergraduates, 300 graduate students and 23 faculty) has earned national recognition.

In the ROBERt R. MccORMicK scHOOl Of EnGinEERinG and aPPliEd sciEncE, about 1,300 undergraduates and approximately 750 graduate students choose from among 15 majors, including such interdisciplinary fields as materials science, biomedical engineering and environmental engineering. Recent curriculum innovations and the Ford Motor Company Engineering Design Center give students exceptional opportunities for team learning, collaborative projects and computer-assisted learning.

The MEdill scHOOl Of JOURnalisM prepares students for careers in newspapers, magazines, broadcast journalism, new media or integrated marketing communications. Medill students have consistently won in the Hearst Foundation’s National Writing, Photojournalism and Broadcast News Championships, the Pulitzer Prize competition of

college journalism; and its students dominate the Society of Professional Journalists’ Mark of Excellence Awards competition.

Established in 1895 as an integral part of the University, the HEnRY and lEiGH BiEnEn scHOOl Of MUsic combines a nationally ranked music program of conservatory intensity with the academic rigor and scholarly resources found only at a first-rank research university. Students are encouraged to grow as both artists and people and to explore the myriad career options avail-able in a life devoted to music. Artists from the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Lyric Opera of Chicago and other world-class performing organizations are among the faculty.

the staff of academic services and student development assists student athletes in their pursuit of academic excellence. the professional staff, which consists of four full-time advi-sors and an intern, helps the students make the most of all of the opportunities northwestern University offers.

FRESHmAN ASSiSTANCE. The advisors work closely with the freshmen to help ease the transition from high school to college. The freshmen meet weekly with their advisors to discuss their performance in the classroom and to receive academic assistance when necessary. The evening study skills/tutoring program is held at the University Library 7 to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday. The tutoring staff consists of mostly graduate students, with some outstanding undergraduates rounding out the 30-plus staff. The tutors are available for drop-in assistance, small group learning teams and individualized tuto-rial sessions.

REGiSTRATioN ADviSiNG. In close collaboration with the advising staffs in each of the six un-dergraduate schools, the Academic Services and Student Development staff also provides advice to help student-athletes develop a plan of study, including guidance in selecting majors and minors. An impor-tant component of their services is course registration advising. Prior to the beginning of each quarter, student-athletes meet individually first with their schools’ academic advisors and then with their athletic advisors to plan their curriculum for the upcoming quarter and discuss the registration process. CAREER PLANNiNG. Preparation for a productive and successful entry into the workforce or gradu-ate school begins during the freshman-year orientation programs. In conjunction with University Career Services, the provision of career counseling and the education of job search skills help Northwestern student-athletes obtain relevant summer employment and internships, as well as permanent employment or graduate school admissions upon graduation. The ’CATS Life Skills Program includes programs on major selection, finding a summer internship, securing a full time job, and the transition from school to work. The N club has partnered with the Life Skills program to provide mentoring opportunities as well as to facilitate internships and full-time employment. With the numerous companies and organiza-tions that specifically recruit Northwestern student-athletes and with the help of the Wildcat network of alumni and fans, excellent job opportunities in all fields are possible.

Associate Director for Academic Services & Director of Student

Development Betsi Burns has been honored with the 2008 Lan Hewlett Award from the National Association of Academic Advisors in Athletics. The award, given for outstand-ing performance as an Academic Advisor for Athletics, is presented to an advisor who, in part, achieves a merited stature among and support from student-athletes, faculty, coaches and fellow administrators in addition to creating an innovative response

to the varied and emerging needs of student-athletes. It also recognizes significant contributions and leader-ship to the field both nationally and within the university. An 11-year veteran as an aca-demic advisor at Northwestern, Burns has an impressive list of accomplish-ments in that time span. She has instituted the Junior Jumpstart and Senior Transition workshops, imple-mented the PURPLE Peer Mentoring Program and launched the Career Athlete program that currently has

50 mentors and 150 student-athletes registered with multiple job postings. Burns developed “An Insider’s Guide to Northwestern Athletics” and also created Field Day, an event that has brought together student-athletes from all 19 of NU’s varsity sports and hundreds of community children for the past nine years. Burns has done all this while serving as an academic advisor to over 150 student-athletes.

“The mission of the Office of Academic Services and Student Development is to offer a comprehensive array of the support programs and services, integrated with University re-sources, that empowers all student-athletes to achieve academic success while balancing the demands of athletic participation and everyday college life. The Office is built on the philoso-phy of individual responsibility and personal integrity, with the end result being the overall development and preparation of the student-athletes for a successful life after college.”

was named 16th presi-dent of Northwestern University on December 16, 2008 and began his term on September 1, 2009. President Schapiro is among the nation’s premier authorities on the economics of higher education, with par-ticular expertise in the area of college financing and afford-ability and on trends in edu-cational costs and student aid. He is widely quoted in the national media and has testi-fied before U.S. Senate and House committees on eco-nomic and educational issues. Before coming to Northwestern, he was presi-dent of Williams College

from 2000 to 2009. Among the initiatives implemented during his presi-dency were a substantial reduction in average class size, a tripling of the number of courses offered in the college’s signature tutorial program and the completion of a number of major building projects including a center for theatre and dance, a student center and new faculty office/classroom buildings. Courses taught by President Schapiro at Williams College included introductory microeconomics, a tutorial on the economics of higher education and two interdisciplinary seminars, one on the econom-ics and philosophy of education and the other on disease, culture and society. He previously served as a member of the Williams College faculty from 1980 to 1991, as Professor of Economics and as Assistant Provost. In 1991 he went to the University of Southern California where he served as Chair of the Department of Economics until 1994 and then as Dean of the College of Letters, Arts and Sciences until 2000. During his last two years as Dean, he also served as the University’s Vice President for Planning. President Schapiro has written more than 100 articles and five books, and he has edited two others, most with his longtime co-author Michael McPherson. These include: The Student Aid Game: Meeting Need and Rewarding Talent in American Higher Education (Princeton University

Press 1998); Paying the Piper: Productivity, Incentives and Financing in Higher Education (also with Gordon Winston, University of Michigan Press 1993) and Keeping College Affordable: Government and Educational Opportunity (Brookings 1991), plus two recent edited volumes College Success: What It Means and How to Make It Happen (College Board 2008) and College Access: Opportunity or Privilege? (College Board 2006).

President Schapiro has received research grants and contracts from the National Science Foundation, the U.S. Department of Education, the World Bank, the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the Spencer Foundation, the College Board, the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development and other groups to study the economics of higher education and related topics. He received his bachelor’s degree in economics from Hofstra University in 1975 and his doctorate from the University of Pennsylvania in 1979. President Schapiro and his wife Mimi have three children: Matt, Alissa and Rachel.

became Northwest-ern’s 21st director of intercollegiate athletics and recreation on April 14, 2008, bringing a track record of Division I success and a commit-ment to the values NU always has maintained in collegiate athletics. “The opportunity

to lead Northwestern’s athletic and recreation programs is both exciting and humbling,” Phillips said. “Northwestern is a world-class institution that does things right in terms of college athletics and what they stand for.” One of 10 children, Phillips, who grew up in the Portage Park neighborhood on the Northwest Side, is the perfect fit to head up NU’s 19-sport program in the nation’s No. 3 market. His Windy City roots and family orientation are integral parts of his philosophy of providing student-athletes with a “world-class experience” that enables them to succeed academically, socially and athletically. One of Phillips’ first actions at Northwestern was to begin the implementation of a Department of Athletics and Recreation re-organization that was completed in January of 2009. NU’s existing departments were broken into three key “silos:” internal, external and student-athlete welfare. Northwestern’s stellar marketing and promo-tions staff continued to excel in 2008-09, winning its sixth national NACMA award since 2003. Ticket sales for Big Ten football home games went up 17 percent, men’s basketball sales improved 13 percent for weekend games and overall attendance was up at all seven of NU’s admission-charging sports. New courtside seating at Welsh-Ryan Arena sold out for the men’s basketball season. NU signed corporate sponsorship deals with Northwestern Memorial Hospital and Har-ris Bank, re-branded its media rights holder to Northwestern Sports Properties (NSP), defeated Notre Dame at U.S. Cellular Field in baseball and created an Annual Report to showcase the depart-ment’s previous year. Phillips hired ultra-successful women’s basketball coach Joe McKeown in June of 2008. McKeown came to Evanston after 19 years at George Washington, where he took his team to the postseason 17 times and compiled a 509-174 record. Phillips’ second coaching hire was to name Tracey Fuchs the head of the field hockey program in January of 2009. Fuchs had arguably the most successful playing career in USA Field Hockey history and has been referred to as the “Michael Jordan of field hockey.” In 2009, Phillips signed a four-year deal with WGN Radio, the long-time radio outlet of Northwestern football and men’s basketball. In addition to those two sports, a new weekly Inside

Wildcat Athletics show will air on The Voice of Chicago through the 2012-13 season. Phillips also inked head football coach Pat Fitzgerald to a new seven-year deal that will keep him on the Wildcat sidelines through 2015. Northwestern had a great athletic year in 2008-09, beginning in the fall with the Wildcats’ 9-4 Alamo Bowl season. The team became the fifth in NU history to win nine contests, finishing No. 23 in the BCS. The football team also earned a program-record 26 Academic All-Big Ten awards and earned a 3.0 or better team GPA during the spring quarter for the highest team GPA in school history. In addition, men’s soccer made its second appearance in the NCAA quarterfinals in the last three years. In the winter, men’s basketball earned NU’s first postseason bid during head coach Bill Carmody’s tenure. Northwestern recorded its fourth-straight year with an individual national champion when Jake Herbert won the 184-lbs wrestling title, the Hodge Trophy as the nation’s top collegiate wrestler and the Big Ten’s Jesse Owens Award. In the spring, Northwestern won its fifth-straight NCAA women’s lacrosse title and Hannah Nielsen repeated as the Tewaaraton Trophy win-ner. Women’s tennis ranked No. 1 for much of the year and won the ITA Indoor national title, a first for a northern school. Men’s tennis made a great turnaround to qualify for the NCAA Tournament and men’s golf made the NCAA Championships. Seven of NU’s eight men’s teams had postseason representation in 2008-09, making it arguably the top year for men’s athletics at NU in history. Academically and in the community, the Wildcats had a banner year in 2008-09. North-western touted a school-record-tying 879 student-athlete quarters in which a 3.0 GPA was earned, and 17 teams achieved a 3.0 or better team GPA. All 19 varsity squads recorded a 2.9 or better mark for two academic quarters (fall and spring) for the first time in school history. Northwestern’s combined student-athlete GPA for the spring was a school-record 3.21. NU’s APR and GSR scores ranked in the nation’s top five and 10, respectively. In the community, student-athletes volunteered a school-record 5,346 hours while serving 66 orga-nizations in Evanston and greater Chicagoland. In June of 2009, Phillips served on the NCAA Champions Forum panel. The panel con-sisted of football coaches and athletics directors making an effort to bring minority football coach-es closer to the mindset of those who hire football coaches. He also is part of the NCAA Mentoring Program, the NACDA Executive Committee and the 2016 Chicago Olympic Committee. Beginning in 2004, Phillips served as North-ern Illinois’ athletic director for four years. In 2006, he was promoted to associate vice president in addition to his director of athletics title. He was chosen to serve as chairman of the MAC Athletic Director’s Council and also served on the NCAA

women’s basketball selection committee. Phillips spearheaded the fund raising and construction of the $14-million Yordon Academic and Athletic Performance Center, the largest capital project in athletics history at NIU. The Huskies also opened an indoor practice facility for baseball, softball and men’s and women’s golf and began construction in the spring of 2008 on a soccer/track and field complex. During Phillips’ tenure at NIU, he helped schedule football games with Michigan and Ohio State that resulted in NIU’s first national TV ap-pearances. He negotiated playing Iowa at Soldier Field in 2007 as a home game, a contest that sold out in less than a week. Phillips also signed a multiple-year agreement for the radio power WSCR-AM (The Score) to carry football, men’s basketball and a weekly NIU Live radio show. A 1990 Illinois graduate, Phillips worked as a manager and student assistant in the Illini’s ath-letic department. He earned a master’s degree in education at Arizona State (1992) while serving as a restricted earnings basketball coach before mov-ing into athletics administration in the Arizona State development office. Phillips holds a Ph.D. in educational admin-istration from Tennessee, completed in 2007. Phil-lips served as an assistant athletics director with the Volunteers until 2000. He directed a $12.4 million annual athletics giving program and aided in the first-ever capital campaign for athletics at UT that raised over $50 million for endowments, facilities and programs. Phillips moved to Notre Dame in 2000, serving as associate director of athletics and senior associate director of athletics for external affairs. He helped launch the Rockne Heritage Annual Fund and played an integral part in the funding of a $24-million, 96,000-square foot athletic facility. In addition, he managed the ticket office, various corporate sponsorships, athletic programs and a weekly Irish radio show. Phillips and his wife, Laura, have five chil-dren: Luke, Madeline, Meredith, John and James.
