Quick Facts

Why Spartans?The first athletic teams at USC Upstate were fielded in 1967. CalledtheFightingBantams,thoseearlyteamsworegarnetandblackandplayedtheirbasketballgamesinalocaljuniorhighschoolgymnasium. In 1970-71, the University took its first of two steps to distinguishitselffromUSCColumbiabychangingtheschoolcolorsfromgarnetandblacktopurpleandwhite.Ayearlater,the University changed its nickname to the Spartan Rifles in honorofalocalmilitiaunitthatplayedanintegralpartintheRevolutionaryWar,winninganimportantvictoryattheBattleof Cowpens. Though the official nickname was the Spartan Rifles, the athletic teams were known as just the Rifles. The USCS athletic teams were known as the Rifles from 1971-2004. In2004,theUniversityofSouthCarolinaBoardofTrusteespassedaresolutiontorenametheUniversityinSpartanburg

astheUniversityofSouthCarolinaUpstate.Inamovetohelp better brand the University and its image, the official nicknameoftheschoolwaschangedtotheSpartans.Thenamecontinuestopayhomagetothemilitiaunitknownasthe Spartan Rifles, though the nickname has been modified to emphasize the first portion of the militia unit’s name instead ofthelastpart. ThoughthenameoftheUniversityandthenicknameofitsathleticteamshavechanged,thecolorsremainhuntergreen,white,andblack.In1979-80,theschoolcolorswerechangedtogreenandwhite.Overtheyears,theoriginal“Kelly”greenhasbeentransformedtothemodernday“Hunter”green,andblackhasnowbeenaddedasacomplementarycolor.

TheCountyUniversitySoccerStadiumstandsasanillustrationoftherelationshipbetweenUSCUpstateandtheSpartanburgcommunity.

USC Upstate and Spartanburg County joined together to build five much-needed regulation soccer fields on University property. The fields serve as a home site for Spartanburg’s youth soccerorganizations.Theyalso serveas thepractice facil-ityforUSCUpstate’smen’sandwomen’ssoccerteams.Inaddition,SpartanburgCountyfundedthe$850,000CountyUniversitySoccerStadiumwiththehopesofattractingregionalandnationalyouthsoccertournaments,aswellasNCAAeventsinconjunctionwithUSCUpstate.

CountyUniversitySoccerStadiumopenedwhentheSpartanstookonSouthCaro-linainanexhibitiongameonAug.26,2001.

Sinceitsopeningin2001,theCountyUniversitySoccerStadiumhasbeenthesiteofPeachBeltConferenceTournamentgamesformen’sandwomen’ssoccerandhostedNCAATournamentgamesin2002and2003.Inaddition,thefacility,alongwith the youth soccer fields, have hosted national and regional ODP camps as well astheCanadianWomen’sNationalTeam.Recently,thesoccerfacilitieshavebeenthe host site for the NSCAA coaching certification clinics.

The County University Soccer Stadium complex was officially completed with the opening of the University Readiness Center in May 2003. The building houses five lockerrooms,aconcessionstand,hospitalitysuites,andpublicrestroomfacilitiesfortheuseofthemen’sandwomen’ssoccerprograms.

KendallReyesisinhis10thseasonasheadcoachoftheUSCUpstatewomen’ssoccerprogram,andistheonlyheadcoachinthehistoryoftheprogramattheUniversity.

InadditiontohiscoachingresponsibilitiesatUpstate,ReyeshasbeenappointedtothepositionasStateTechnicalCo-ordinator for Coaching Education by the National SoccerCoaches Association of America (NSCAA). He is the first andonlypersonofcolortoholdthepositionintheorganiza-tion.Inaddition,hewasappointedasanNSCAANationalStaffInstructorinthesummerof2007.

Reyesstarted theUSCUpstatewomen’ssoccerprogramin2000andhasquicklymadetheprogramaperennialcon-tenderinthePeachBeltConference.Theprogramwonits50thmatchin2004andReyesownsa69-87-13recordattheUniversityinhisnineseasons.Reyeshastallieda84-106-15markin12yearsasacollegiateheadcoach.

UpstateplacedthreeplayersontheAll-Conferenceteamin2006andonein2005.ReyesledUSCUpstatetoa12-2-3recordin2004anda6-1-1markinthePeachBeltConfer-ence, earning a second straight second-place finish in the league.FiveplayersearnedAll-ConferencehonorsandtwowerenamedAll-Region.In2003,theSpartansclaimedsec-ondplaceintheconferencebehindeventualnationalcham-pionKennesawState.

ReyesledUSCUpstatetothe2001PeachBeltConferenceChampionshipinjustthesecondyearoftheprogram’sex-istence.Intotal,hehascoached17All-ConferenceandsixAll-RegionselectionsandoneAll-Americansince2000.

PriortocomingtoUSCUpstate,ReyeswastheheadcoachatNewberryCollege,wherehisoverallrecordwas15-20-2intwoseasons.In1999,heledtheLadyIndianstoa9-9-1record, marking the first non-losing season in the program’s history. While at Newberry, Reyes coached an honorablementionAll-American,aSouthAtlanticConferenceFresh-manoftheYear,aNSCAAAll-SouthRegionselection,andfive All-SAC players.

ReyesstartedhiscoachingcareeratFrancisMarionassist-ingwiththemen’sprogramfrom1993-98.Healsoassistedintheestablishmentof thewomen’sprogramin1995andhelpedbuildtheprogramintoaperennialnationalcontend-erontheDivisionIIlevel.

InadditiontohiscoachingresponsibilitiesatUSCUpstate,ReyesservesasanOlympicDevelopmentProgramStateTeamHeadCoachfor theS.C.YouthSoccerAssociation.HealsoservedasanO.D.P.RegionIIIStaffCoachandisanAssociateDirectorofSoccerVisionAcademy,Inc.Inad-dition,hehasbeeninstrumentalintheUniversity’ssummerprogram,attractingtheCanadianNationalTeamtocampusin2003andthe12-underRegionalODPCampin2004and2005.

CoachReyesholdstheNSCAA(NationalSoccerCoachesAssociation of America) National and Advanced NationalDiplomasandPremier,aswellasanNSCAAGoalkeepingInstituteDiploma.

Reyes, a native of Trinidad and Tobago, graduated fromFrancisMarionin1994withabachelor’sdegreeinEnglish,

withacoachingminor.HealsoearnedaM.Ed.fromFMU.Whilethere,hewasafour-yearcaptain,four-timelettermanand two-timeAll-Peach Belt Conference selection for thePatriots.

She finished her Upstatecareerwitha2.68goalsagainstaveragehavingplayedin16matches.Sheplayed1,178minutesingoal,comingupwith110saves.ShewascreditedwithtwooftheSpartans’threewinsin2007.

Caroline VernaStudent Assistant CoachCarolineVernaisinhersecondseasonworkingasastudentassistantcoachwiththewomen’ssoccerprogramafterplayingforheadcoachKendallReyesfrom2006-07.

AnativeofQueens,N.Y.,VernawasanAll-RegionandAll-ConferenceselectionatBraynt&StrattonCollegepriortotransferringtoUpstateforthe 2006 season. A versatile player, she played as a defender and forward at Upstate. She finished her career with 12 points on five goals and twoassists.Shehada73.7percentshotsongoalpercentageandwas1-for-1inpenaltykickopportunities.ShegraduatedfromFrancisLewisHighSchoolinGlenOaks,N.Y.,andledhersquadtothe2004divisionchampionship.

2009 Season Preview

Kendall Reyesisenteringhis10thseasonastheSpartans’headcoachand12thseasonoverall.ThisisthethirdseasonforUSCUp-stateattheDivisionIlevelasmembersoftheAtlanticSunConference.CoachReyesiscomplimentinghisfourreturningstartersandsix let-terwinnersreturning,with13newfaces.Hefeelswiththetalentthathehasthisyearonthepitch,theSpartanswillbeabletocompetewithanyoneontheschedule,potentiallyallowingthemtoclimbtheladderintheA-Sunstandings. The 2008 squad finished the season with an overall record of 3-16-0 anda1-9-0markintheA-Sun.TheSpartansdroppednineone-goalcontestsandlosttwoothersbytwogoals.IfUpstatewouldhavegot-tenafewbreakshereandthere,theirrecordwouldhavebeenamuchbetterresultthanthethreewinmarkthattheSpartansposted. There is little reason to think theSpartanswillnotshow improve-mentin2009withseveralkeycomponentsoflastyear’ssquadbackplusaqualityrecruitingclassthatincludesfourcollegetransfers.Thekey to success for this season’s squad will be to avoid injuries thatrequirealengthyrecoverytime. Reyes feels that with his returners and newcomers, the Spartanmidfield and defenders will be stronger. He also feels that everyone on theteamwillmeshexceptionallywellandalltheplayerswillpusheachotherinanefforttogeteveryonetogiveittheirallinbothpracticeandduringmatches. TheSpartanscoachingstaffwillcountontheleadershipofaquartetofreturners.SeniorgoalkeeperBrittany Daughtry, junior midfielders Alyssa RoegnerandLeigh WardandjuniordefenderCatherine Nolff willprovidetheleadershipfortheSpartansin’09. TherearetwootherreturnersthatwillplaykeyrolesforUpstatethisupcomingseason.JuniorOleva DuRantisbackaftermissingtheen-tire2008campaignduetoinjury;alsoreturningissophomoreforwardCrystal Hackett. Reyes added 13 new players, several of which will compete forstarting jobs, while the rest of the newcomers will compete for sig-nificant playing time. Goalkeepers The final defensive line for the Spartans this season will be an-choredbyeither returnerBrittany Daughtryor freshmannewcomerSian Jenkins.Botharetalentedkeepersandwillbattleforthestartingroleallseason,whichshouldelevateeachplayer’slevelofplay. Daughtry (Sr., 5-7, Smithfield, N.C./Smithfield-Selma HS) was the primarygoalkeeper lastseason for theSpartans. Shesawaction in17gameswith16starts,logging1423:41minutesguardingthenetin2008.ShesetaUSCUpstatesingle-seasonDivisionIrecordwith116saves,surpassingformergoalkeeperandcurrentassistantcoachSa-manthaSpradley’smarkof93.ShealsosetaSpartansingleseasonD-Irecordinwins(3),GAA(1.96)andminutes(1423). Jenkins (Fr., 5-9, Essex, England/Canterbury HS) is a talentedkeeperandwillcompeteforplayingtimethisseason.Thegameexpe-riencethatsheacquiresthisseasonwillaideherdevelopmentasshepreparestotakeovergoalkeepingdutieswhenDaughtrydepartstheprogramafterthe’09season.

Midfielders The midfield unit will likely be the strongest unit for the Spartans in 2009. Thegroupwill likelyhavevarious looks throughout theseason,depend-ingonthetypeofformationthatCoachReyesimplements.Leigh Wardreturns to lead the unit that includes five newcomers. Ward(Jr.,5-9,Summerville,S.C./FortDorchesterHS)sawactioninall19gamesaseasonagowith11starts. Wardwill likelyseeactionatallmidfielder positions as she understands the responsibility of each position onthepitch. Battling for positions in the midfield are five new comers: Aveann Doug-las, Maegan Garner, Dana Hillman, Ashleigh Barkley and Daphnee Cadet. Douglas(Jr.-TR,5-5,Arima,Trinidad/MonroeCC)joinstheSpartansaf-ter spending the last two seasons at Monroe CC in New York. She finished her twoyearstintwith threegoalsand twoassists. Reyes Close to 70 Career WinsAfterstarting thewomen’ssoccerprogramatUSCUpstate in2000,headcoachKendallReyes isonewinshyof reaching70careerwinsat theUniversity. Itdidn’thelp that theSpartanslosteightgamesbyonlyonegoalduringthe2008season.Astheonlycoachinthe program’s history, it will be a significant milestone for the women’s soccer program to supportsuchanaccomplishmentinthe2009season.

Nolff’s Game-Winner Leads Spartans Over BisonsCatherineNolff’sgoaloffaSpartancornerkickwithsixminutesleftgavetheSpartanstheirthirdwinoftheseasoninagamethatlookedlikeitwasgoingintoovertime.JuniorCarmenOsorio lofted an excellent ball in front of the Lipscomb net. After several deflections, sopho-moredefender,CatherineNolff,grabbedthelooseballandsentitintotherightcornerofthenet for her first goal of the season, which proved to be the game-winner and represented the sixthdifferentSpartantoscoreagoalthisseason.

Hackett Leads Spartans to Victory in 2OT FashionTheSpartanscametobattleonalongFridaynightatCountyUniversitySoccerStadium,ultimatelyearningtheirsecondwinoftheseason.Thoughtheywereunawaretheywouldbeplayingfornearly110minutes,theywerepreparedandplayedhardthroughouttheentiregametotakehometheirsecondvictoryoftheseason.FreshmanCrystalHackettscoredthegame-winninggoalindouble-overtimetogivetheSpartansthe2-1decisionoverTheCitadel.

Hackett, a freshman from Waterbury, Conn., turned out to be the crucial Spartan of thegame.Withjustundertwominutesremainingindouble-overtime,Hackett,whoalreadytal-lied an assist on the night, collected her first goal of the season and concurrently helped the Spartansearntheirsecondwin.

Season In ReviewThe2008soccerseasonfortheUpstateSpartanswasonemarkedwithclosecallandalotoffrustrationastheSpartanscontinuallybattledtoputitselfinpositiontowin,butwouldfallbythenarrowestofmarginsenroutetoa3-16-0overallrecordanda1-9-0markintheA-Sun.

Upstateopenedtheseasonwitha2-1victoryoverCharlestonSouthern,oneofthree2-1winsontheyear.TheclosecallagainsttheBuccaneerswouldbeindiciativeoftheseasonas12oftheSpartans’17gameswouldbedecidedbyasinglegoal.Infact,fourlossesinA-Sunplaycamebywayofaone-goaldifferential.

WhileUpstatetook2-1winsoverTheCitadelandLipscombinadditiontotheCharlestonSouthern win, the Spartans fell by a single goal in nine games. Two of the remaining five losseswereby twogoals, leaving theSpartans towonderwhat couldhavebeenhadabouncehereortheregonetheirway.

Despitethefrustrationsthatcomewithcomingclosetoanumberofvictoriesandfallingjustshort,Upstatedidhavesomebrightspotsontheyear.BrittanyDaughtryturnedinastrongseasoninthenet.Sherecordeda1.96goalsagainstaveragedespitefacing312shots.Shealsosetaschoolseasonrecordwith116saves.

Catherine Nolff and Crystal Hackett emerged as solid players on the field and made prog-ress towards being leaders on the team. Nolff, playing both defense and in the midfield, finished with a goal, claiming the game-winner in the 2-1 victory over Lipscomb. Hackett provedtobeasolidforwardwithspeedandskill.Astheseasonprogressed,shejustgotbetter. She finsihed the year ranked third on the team in scoring and notched the game-win-ninggoalinthe2-1overtimevictoryoverTheCitadel.

Hodge Center NamedforoneoftheUniversity’sfounders,thelateDr.G.B.Hodge,theCenterwascompletedin1973andunderwentrenovationsin2000.ThebottomfloorishometotheAthleticsDepartment,which includesoffices for theathleticadministrationandcoaches.TheHodgeCenter featuresamaingymnasium,hometothemen’sandwomen’sbasketballteamsandthevolleyballprogram,lockerroomsandtheUniversityweightroom,aswellasathletictrainingfacilities. TheHodgeCenterisconsideredoneofthetoughestplacesforopponentstoplayintheSouth.Thecozygym,with its fansclose to theaction,hashelpedUpstatevolleyball toaphenomenal.751winningpercentage,women’sbasketballtoa.584winningpercentagesince1976andmen’sbasketballtoanastounding.703winningpercentagesincethecourt’sopeningin1973.

Performance Center WiththemovetoDivisionI,theUSCUpstateathleticdepartmenthascommitteditselftobuildingstrengthandconditioningprogramsthataredesignedtomeettheneedsofall17ofitsprograms.Aspartofthatinitiative,theschoolhireditsfirststrengthandconditioningcoachinScottSengerin2007,andhehashelpeddesignsport-spe-cifictrainingprogramsforall17programs. Inaddition,withtheguidanceofAssociateAthleticsDirectorforSportsMedicineMichaelSandago,theUSCUpstateathleticdepart-mentwillremodelspaceintheHodgeCentertocreatetheUpstatePerformanceCenter,whichissettoopeninthe2009-10academicyear,givingUpstatestudent-athletesaworkoutspacethattheycancalltheirown.

Dr.JohnC.StockwellhasservedaschancelloroftheUniversityofSouthCaro-linaUpstatesince1994, leadingtheUniversity toward itsvisionasoneof theleadingmetropolitanuniversitiesintheSoutheast. Underhisleadership,theUniversityhasexperiencedoutstandinggrowthinacademic standards, campus development, curricula and public/private part-nerships.Inthepast10years,enrollmentshaveincreasedbythirty-fivepercentwithmorethan5,000studentscurrentlyenrolled.Thecampusboastsadiversestudent population with 71 nations represented in the University communityandaminorityenrollmentofoverthanthirtypercent. ChancellorStockwellisleadingtheUniversitytowardcompletionofa10-yearmasterplan,approvedbytheUSCBoardofTrusteesin1997,includingmulti-mil-liondollarcapitaldevelopmentsinclassroomspace,academicsupportfacilities,housing,andathleticsfacilities.Inaddition,anumberofcampusbeautificationinitiatives are underway and a $60 million highway infrastructure project sur-roundingandintersectingthecampuswasrecentlyfinished. BeforecomingtoUSCUpstate,Dr.Stockwellservedasprovostandinterimchancellor of the University of Wisconsin-Parkside. In earlier years, he servedasdeanoftheSchoolofArtsandSciencesattheStateUniversityofNewYorkCollege at Cortland, as chair and professor of the Department of Speech andTheatreat IndianaStateUniversity,andasprofessoranddirectoroftheatreatCaliforniaStateUniversityNorthridge. Dr. Stockwell earned his Ph.D. and Master’s degrees in theatre at BowlingGreen State University, and his bachelor’s degree in speech and theatre fromCedarvilleCollege.HeisalsoanalumnusoftheHarvardUniversityInstituteforEducationalManagement. HeisthefoundingchairandcurrentboardmemberofSpartanburg’schapteroftheUrbanLeagueoftheUpstate.Heserves,also,ontheBoardoftheSpartan-burgAreaChamberofCommerceandontheBoardofGovernorsoftheGreen-villeChamberofCommerce,togetherwitharangeofothercivicandregionalcommitments. John and his wife, Dr. DianeVecchio, a professor of history at Furman Uni-versity, have four grown children: Benjamin, Kelsea, Adrien and Cory and onegranddaughter.

MikeHall is inhis16thyearas thedirectorofathleticsat theUniversityofSouthCarolinaUpstate. Since joining the Spartans program, Hall has been instrumental in makingmanyimprovementstotheathleticsdepartment.Arguablyhisbiggestaccom-plishment is leading the University from NCAA Division II to NCAA Division ImembershipandtheAtlanticSunConferencein2007-08. Halloversawthecompletionof thenewLouisP.HowellAthleticsComplexthatalreadyclaimsoneofthetopsoccerandsoftballfacilitiesintheSoutheast.TheClevelandS.HarleyBaseballPark is thenewest jewelof thecomplexandthetennisfacilityhasrecentlybeenupgradedwithsixadditionaltenniscourtsand a clubhouse. The total cost of the four projects exceeded $5 million. In1999-2000,Halloversawa$2millionrenovationtotheG.B.HodgeCenter.Therenovationsincludedahospitalitysuiteoverlookingthegymnasium,concessionarea, weight room, official’s locker rooms and offices for the athletic staff andcoaches.In2003,themen’sandwomen’sbasketballandvolleyballlockerroomswererenovated. HallwasinstrumentalinthedevelopmentofthenewCountyUniversitySoc-cerStadium,whichopenedinAugustof2001,aswellasfiveothersoccerfieldsthatareusedbySpartanburgCountyasyouthsoccerfacilities.HallhasusedthefacilitytoattractstateandregionalyouthsoccereventsaswellastheNCAADivi-sionIISoccerChampionships. HallcontinuestoworktoenhancestaffandcoachingpositionsatUSCUp-state. He has upgraded many positions from part-time to full-time status andexpandedseveralassistantcoaches’positions.Healsocontinuestocoordinateover20corporatesponsorsforUSCUpstateathletics. A 1981 graduate of Liberty University, he went on to serve for 13 years asassistantathleticsdirectorforacademics,complianceandhealsoservedasgolfcoachathisalmamater.HealsoworkedastheDirectoroftheAdultEducationprograminadmissionsandadvising.Heearnedhismaster’sdegreeineducationfromLynchburgCollege.HallandhiswifePhyllis,a1982Libertygraduate,havethreedaughters,Mary,MandyandCourtney.

Eric EnglishAssistant Athletic Trainer

Eric English is in hisfourthyearasassistantath-letic trainer in the sportsmedicine department atUSCUpstate.Inadditiontohis duties in athletic train-ing, he also serves as aninstructor in the physicaleducationdepartment. English has an extensive background in athletictraining. He has served as the clinical coordinatorforsportsmedicinefortheNorthBrowardHospitalSystem (Fla.) from 2001-06 overseeing 22 athletictrainers. Inaddition,hewasateacherandathletictrainerforBrowardCountyPublicSchools. Hewasthe head athletic trainer at Western High Schoolfrom 1997-2001 and at Cypress Bay High Schoolfrom2001-06. A native of Washington Court House, Ohio, heplayed football and wrestled for MiamiTrace HighSchool for three years. Prior to her stint at the University of LouisianaatMonroe, sheservedasastudentathletic traineratOregonStatewhilepursuingherundergraduatedegreeinathletictraining.ShewasastudentunderMichael Sandago, Upstate’s current Associate Ath-letics Director for Sports Medicine, during her firstthree years of college. Rosato worked closely withtheBeaverssoftballandmen’sbasketballprogramsandgraduatedin2007. RosatoisATCcertifiedandamemberoftheNATAand SCATA organizations. She is originally fromLafayette, La., but moved to Katy, Texas, while inhigh school and graduated from Cinco Rach HighSchool.

Dr. Steven Singletonserves as the team physi-cianforUSCUpstateathlet-ics. Dr. Singleton provideson-site care for Spartanathletes as well as gamecoverage. With more thanadecadeofexperience,heisanexpertatdiagnosingproblemsanddesigningprograms intended to achieve optimal results.Thephysician,athletictrainingstaffandstudent-athleteworktogetherasateamtowardthegoaloffullre-covery. Dr. Singleton has treated patients from allwalksoflife,includingrecreationalandeliteathletesfromallovertheworld.Upstateathletesalsobenefitfrom a relationship with Proaxis Physical Therapy.TheprofessionalsatProaxisbringtogetherinnova-tive methodology, advanced research and provenskillstoachieveexcellentresults. Dr.StevenSingleton,startedhisownsportsmed-icinepracticein2009afteradistinguishedcareeratthe Steadman-Hawkins Clinic of the Carolinas andwill continue his relationship with Upstate athlet-ics. He is a sports medicine specialist with exper-tise in shoulder, elbow,knee and foot/anklereconstructive surgery.A graduate of StanfordUniversity and the Uni-versity of Texas South-westernMedicalSchool,Dr. Singleton servedhis fellowship with theSteadman-HawkinsClin-ic in 1997. The USC Upstate Sports Medicine Staff isresponsible for the prevention, evaluation,treatmentandrehabilitationofinjuriesforall17 intercollegiatesports teams. It isourmis-sion to provide excellent health care with aprimaryemphasisoneducatingthestudent-athleteinhealthmaintainance,aswellasinju-rycareandprevention.Thisemphasisextendsto maintaining safety in practice and gamesituations,drugeducationprograms,stayingcurrentontreatmentandrehabilitationtech-niquesandfollowingNCAAandNATAproto-cols.Thecommitmenttothestudent-athletesand coaches is spread over the areas of ser-vice,careandeducation. A prospective student-athlete (a prospect) is: any person who has begun classes for the ninthgrade. A prospective student-athlete remains aprospectevenafterheorshehassignedaNationalLetter of Intent or accepts an offer of financial aidtoattendUSCUpstate.Theprospectremainsapros-pectuntiltheyreportforthefirstdayofclassesfora regular term (fallor spring), theyparticipate inaregular squad practice or competition, or officiallyregister and enroll and attend classes during thesummerpriortoinitialenrollmentandreceiveinsti-tutionalathleticsaid.BoostersAreProhibitedFrom:•Contactingaprospectinpersononoroffourcam-pus.•Writingortelephoningaprospectoramemberoftheprospect’sfamily.•Makingarrangements foraprospector thepros-

Rules Governing Contacts With And Benefits For Student-Athletes NCAAlegislationexpresslyprohibitsuniversitysup-porters from providing“extra benefits” to enrolledstudent-athletes or their families. An extra benefitis any special arrangement to provide a student-athlete or his/her family a benefit not authorizedby NCAA legislation. In general, boosters may notprovideanythingormakespecialarrangementsforstudent-athletesortheirfamiliesthatarenotavail-abletothegeneralstudentpopulation.

Prohibited “Extra Benefits” Include, But Are Not Limited To: •Providingcashorloansinanyamount.• Signing or co-signing for a loan or guarantee ofbond.• Use of an automobile or other personal property(e.g.,boats,summerhomes,stereos).•Giftsofanykind,includingbirthdaycards,flowers,holidaygiftsandgiftsofclothingorequipment.•Anytangibleitems,includingmerchandise.•Freeorreduced-costservices,rentals,orpurchases(e.g.,carrepairs,legalservices,haircuts,mealsatlo-calrestaurants).•Purchasingcomplimentaryadmissionsfromastu-dent-athlete.•Providinganhonorariumtoastudent-athleteforaspeakingengagement.•Providingtypingservicesorothercostsassociatedwithschoolprojectsorreports.

The Spartans Athletic Association is an avenuebywhichdonorscansupporttheathleticprograms.With more than 530 individuals and companies intheAssociation,theSpartanAthleticAssociationhasbeenabletohelptheathleticdepartmentachieveseveralinitiatives. ItisanexcitingtimeintheUSCUpstateAthleticDepartment!WiththemovetotheDivisionIAtlan-ticSunConference,therewillbemoreexposureforouruniversity,teams,student-athletesandcoaches.Ourdonorsandcorporatepartnerswillbeabletoberecognized in many different ways with this moveforward. ACADEMIC SUCCESSContinuing a tradition of academic achievement,morethan57percentofallstudent-athletesearnedAll-Academic status during the 2008-09 academicyear.Fifteenstudent-athletesearnedplacesonthe2008-09CoSIDA/ESPNtheMagazineAcademicAll-DistrictTeams.

Belmont led the impressive institutional totals intheracefortheAll-AcademicTrophyfortheseventhtimeineightyearswith66.5percentofitsthestu-dent-athletes achieving All-Academic status withgradepointaveragesofa3.00,orbetter.

Wicke, one of the Bruins’ most celebrated student-athletes, shared theconference’smaleScholarAth-lete of theYear award and earned the conference’sPostgraduate Scholarship. Mercer’s Chereese Roweearnedtheconference’ssecondPostgraduateSchol-arship.Wickeearnednationalacclaimashebecameone of just two men’s basketball players to receiveaneducationalgrantthroughtheNCAApostgradu-atescholarshipprogram.Forhisdedicatedacademicsuccessandcommunityservice,WickelandedontheLowe’sAll-SeniorAll-AmericaSecondTeamandwasoneof10finalistsfortheLowe’sSeniorClassAward.

ATHLETIC SUCCESSForthesecondstraightseason,theA-Sunmadeear-lyheadlinesonthehardwoodasMercer,undernewheadcoachBobHoffman,wentontheroadandde-featedAlabamaandAuburnwithinafour-dayspan,shootingtheBearsuptothetopspotintheRPI.AttheGeneralShaleBrickAtlanticSunChampionship,ETSUendedBelmont’sthree-yearreign,winningitsfirstA-SunTournamenttitleandmakingtheNCAAfieldfortheeighthtime.DuringtheChampionship,CourtneyPigrambecamejustthesecondplayer inleaguehistorytoreachthe2000-pointplateau.TwoplayerscouldreachthatmarkthisseasoninMercer’sJamesFlorenceandCampbell’sJonathanRodriguez.FlorenceandCampbellbegintheseasonasthesec-ond-andthird-highestactivescorersinthenation.

During the baseball season, three A-Sun hurlers,Lipscomb’sRexBrothersandKennesawState’sduoof Chad Jenkins and Kyle Heckathorn moved upthedraftboardsofMajorLeagueteamswithevery

dominating performance. Brothers turned in oneof the league’s top single-season strikeout perfor-mances;Jenkinsposteda41-inningscorelessstreakandHeckathorncappedhisseasonwithadominat-ing15-strikeoutperformanceagainstUNF,earningNationalPlayeroftheWeekhonors.Ondraftnight,JenkinsbecamejusttheseventhA-Sunplayertobeafirst-roundselection,goingtotheBlueJays.Inthesupplementalphaseof thefirst round, theRockiespickedRexBrothersandtheBrewerstabbedHecka-thorn.

Insoftball,theconferenceturnedinoneofitsfinestseasonsinhistory,especiallyduringthenon-confer-enceseason.Againstout-of-conferenceopposition,A-Sun schools posted a .602 win percentage, thefifth-highestinthenation,trailingonlytheSEC,Pac-10,ACCandBig12.Fiveschoolsfinishedwithwinpercentagesbetterthan.600andFGCUandMercerreachedthe40-winmark.TheEaglesestablishedaleaguerecordforwinpercentageat.839inpostinga47-9record.Forthesecond-consecutiveMay,Camp-bellemergedvictoriousattheA-SunChampionship,ledbythedominatingperformanceofMVPBrittanyStanley. She pitched all 31 innings, recorded twoshutoutsandstruckout26againstonlytwowalks.

One of the most dominating athletes in AtlanticSun history closed out her career in Jacksonville’sNatashaHarvey.SheledtheDolphinsteamtitlesinbothIndoorandOutdoorTrack&Fieldforafourth-straightyearandwontheinauguralMVPhonorsatboth meets as well as the Most Outstanding FieldPerformer award. During her four years, she wona combined 18 individual events, five Most Out-standingPerformerawards,bothMostOutstandingFreshman performers in addition to the two MVPhonors. Off the track, she won the A-Sun’s FemaleStudent-AthleteoftheYearAward,wastheA-Sun’snominee for the NCAA Woman of the Year Awardand appeared on the U.S. Track & Field and CrossCountryCoachesAssociationAll-Academicteamforafourth-straightyear.

The 2000 USC Upstate women’s soccer team was the inaugural soccer team at Upstate. The Spartans, then USC Spartanburg Lady Rifles, finished the year with eight wins. The foundation allowed the program to win its first conference title a year later, the 2001 Peach Belt Conference Regular Season Championship.
