Luke Oberkirch begins his 15th season as head coach of the women’s soccer team at Sonoma State University.

In 2008, the Seawolves turned in another outstanding season, reaching double digits in victories for the 18th time in the last 21 years at 15-5-1 overall. The Seawolves qualified for the CCAA Tournament as the No. 1 seed, finishing their conference season with a mark of 10-3-1. Following the year, junior defender Lindsay Catton was named the program’s first All-American since the 2000 season.

Since 1995, when he took over as head coach, Luke Oberkirch has complied a 177-79-26 overall record and a 117-47-22 mark in conference play. In his 14 complete seasons, Oberkirch has guided his team to seven first place finishes, including five in the CCAA’s North Division and two in the Northern California Athletic Conference.

In 2006, Oberkirch picked up his 147th career victory to pass Peter Reynaud and become the winningest women’s soccer coach in Sonoma State history.

In 1998, he led his team to what was then the most wins in Division II women’s soccer history with a 22-2-1 mark. That ‘98 squad won a school-record 20 games in a row and had a 14-0-0 record in conference play before reaching the NCAA Championship game for the third time in nine years. For his leadership role, Oberkirch was named NSCAA National Coach of the Year in addition to being selected as NSCAA West Region and CCAA Coach of the Year.

In 1995 and 1997, Oberkirch led his team the the Northern California Athletic Conference title. The ‘95 team was ranked No. 2 in the country after posting a 17-2 mark in addition to a perfect 10-0 slate in conference play.

Coach Oberkirch joined the Sonoma State staff in 1990, the year the women’s soccer team brought home the school’s first-ever NCAA National Championship. As SSU’s top assistant coach from 1990-94 under Peter Reynaud, Oberkirch was an important part of the team’s incredible success. The teams won five consecutive NCAC titles and made the NCAA playoffs five years in a row. In 1995, Oberkirch was named the third head coach in the program’s history.

Prior to coming to Sonoma State, Oberkirch was head coach of the boys soccer team at Montgomery High School in Santa Rosa from 1987-89. In 1988, his team won the North Bay League Championship and in each of his three seasons, his team made the CIF North Coach Section playoffs. On the club level, Oberkirch is currently coaching the Santa Rosa United Soccer Club.

A San Diego State graduate, Oberkirch received his B.A. in Physical Education in 1987 and earned his teaching credential from Sonoma State in 1989. Luke and his wife Michele reside in Cloverdale with their son Jayk.

Hawaii-Hilo 0August 28, 2008 • Hilo, Hawaii

HILO, Hawaii- It takes most first-year players a while to get acclimated to the college game. That rule appar-ently doesn’t apply to Kiley Brown as the Sonoma State freshman from Novato scored both goals in a 2-0 win over Hawaii-Hilo in the season opener for both clubs on Thursday in Hilo.

It is the third straight year that the Seawolves have opened up the season with a shutout win. They defeated Grand Canyon (2-0) in 2007 and Western Oregon (3-0) in 2006.

Said head coach Luke Oberkirch, “This was a very good win for us. Hilo is a good team.”

After a slow first half in which neither team was able to generate many scoring opportunities, the Seawolves excelled in the second. Brown’s first strike came just after the 67-minute mark as she gathered a loose ball in front of the net and scored. Her second goal was exactly seven minutes later as she beat a defender, then blasted a ball to the upper right corner.

“We came out kind of slow in the first half, but we played great in the second half,” commented Oberkirch, “I think our strong conditioning really made the difference.”

The Seawolves held a 12-8 shot advantage in the contest. Courtney Grixti made three saves in goal to record the shutout.

BYU-HAWAII 1August 30, 2008 • Laie, Hawaii

LAIE, Hawaii- For the second game in a row, a Sonoma State newcomer scored two goals to lead the Seawolves to a win. On Thursday it was Kiley Brown. On Saturday it was Alexica Bosque’s turn as the sophomore led the Seawolves past BYU-Hawaii, 4-1. The win lifts Sonoma State to 2-0-0 on the season.

Lindsay Catton commenced the scoring with an unas-sisted goal in the 34th minute that hit the crossbar and rattled in. The score would stay 1-0 throughout the rest of the first half and well into the second before Brittany Finitz scored in the 58th minute off a Jackie Blumenthal assist.

With her team up 2-0, Bosque connected on the first of her two strikes in the 62nd minute off an assist from Libby Moyer. Her second goal came with under a minute left after a phenomenal long run through defense the left the crowd and her coach impressed. Said Luke Oberkirch, “Alexica’s run was simply amazing.”

The Seasiders would get one goal back, in the 89th minute by Kahanu Ah Puck.

The Seawolves out shot the Seasiders 12-8 and led in corners, 9-4. Said Oberkirch, “it was a tough, muddy field, but again our conditioning made the difference. We were very strong in the second half.”

September 1, 2008 • Honolulu, Hawaii

KANEOHE, Hawaii- Sonoma State got two more goals from Alexica Bosque and solid contributions from up and down the roster on Monday as they shut out Hawaii Pacific 6-0 at Atherton Field in Oahu. The win wraps up a 3-0-0 road trip to Hawaii in which they outscored their opponents 12-1.

The Seawolves are off to a 3-0-0 start for the first time since 2004, when they also won their first three to open the season.

The Seawolves were dominant all day long, outshooting the Sea Warriors 31-4 in the match. Brooke Peterson got the scoring started in just the sixth minute when she scored off a header from a Katie Parucha cross. The score would remain 1-0 for most of the first half before a couple of quick Alexica Bosque goals gave the Seawolves some breathing room at the break.

A transfer from Saint Mary’s, Bosque has had a very impressive debut for the Seawolves, scoring four goals in her first three games. Her four goals would have tied for the team lead last season.

A scoring flurry late in the game doubled a 3-0 Sonoma State lead into the 6-0 final. Kayce Brawley’s first goal of the season came in the 75th minute to start the run. Just over four minutes later, Jaci Davey scored off a Taylor Ed-monds assist. The final strike occurred in the 87th minute when Parucha netted one off a Brawley assist.

Coach Oberkirch was thrilled with how his team ended the Hawaiian trip, “We got great contributions from everyone on our roster. Our depth has really been the difference so far. Now we just have to carry it over to the rest of the season.”

SONOMA STATE 7WESTERN OREGON 0

September 4, 2008 • Rohnert Park, Calif.

ROHNERT PARK, Calif- In their 2008 home opener, the Sonoma State women’s soccer team scored more goals than they have at home in over a decade in a 7-0 rout of Western Oregon. The Seawolves stay perfect on the season at 4-0-0 while the Wolves drop to 2-1-0.

The last time the Seawolves scored seven goals in a home game was on October 7, 1997 when they blanked Cal State Hayward (now Cal State East Bay) by the same 7-0 score. The Seawolves have now scored 19 goals in four games this season, two more than they scored in 19 games in 2007.

Said head coach Luke Oberkirch, “I knew goals would come, but I didn’t know they’d come this fast.”

The Seawolves wasted little time on Thursday, welcoming the Wolves to Seawolf Field with a goal in the 14th minute by Tracy Webster. Webster received a feed from Brittany Peterson and slotted it home. The lead was doubled just three minutes later when Lindsay Catton netted a long strike from the left shortly after a corner kick.

The fans wouldn’t have to wait long for more fireworks as freshman Taylor Edmonds netted her first goal of the season just three minutes later off a double assist by Alli-son Kern and Alexica Bosque. Webster scored her second goal of the game in the 28th minute, again off a Brittany Peterson assist. Her score capped off a flurry of four goals in just over 13 minutes of play and pretty much ended any hopes of a Western Oregon comeback.

Shortly before halftime, Jaci Davey scored the first of her two goals on the day when she received a rebound off her own shot and beat the keeper.

Up 5-0 at the break, the Seawolves didn’t let off the gas, tacking on another score just ten minutes into the second when Brittany Finitz scored her second goal of the season off a beautiful pass into the box by Megan Cunningham.

Davey’s second goal of the game, with under a minute remaining, set the final score at 7-0.

Courtney Grixti and Megan Foertsch split time in the net to combine for the shutout. The Seawolves have allowed just one goal all season long.

“I was a little concerned about a letdown after our trip to Hawaii. However, there was no letdown today and victories like this are a testament to our team’s depth.”

WESTERN WASHINGTON 2SONOMA STATE 1

September 7, 2008 • Rohnert Park, Calif.

ROHNERT PARK, Calif- Western Washington’s Emily Frank-land had a goal and an assist, including the game-winner in the 87th minute, to lead the Vikings past Sonoma State 2-1 on Sunday afternoon in Rohnert Park. The win lifts the Vikings to 3-1-0 on the year while the Seawolves finally see a blemish on their record, falling to 4-1-0.

Sonoma State head coach Luke Oberkirch said after the match, “You need to have a very good performance to beat a team like Western Washington. We just had a good performance.”

In an up-and-down game with plenty of counter attacks and scoring opportunities, Western Washington would break through first when, in the 25th minute, Claire Morgan scored off a Frankland assist.

Sonoma State would tie things up ten minutes later when Taylor Colacion lobbed one into Tracy Webster, who beat the keeper. It was the third goal of the season for Webster, a junior from Sebastopol.

Both teams had opportunities to score in the second half, but the goalkeepers played well and the defenses did a nice job of keeping the ball out of the net. SSU had several point-blank chances in the first half, only to be denied by WWU goalkeeper Kylie Broadbent, who tied SSU’s Courtney Grixti with three saves in the game.

Said Oberkirch, “We really needed to find that second goal. We had some opportunities, but couldn’t get it in the net.”

The winning score came on somewhat of a scramble in front of the net. Frankland emerged with the ball, then poked it past Grixti, to give the Vikings a one-goal lead with just 3:26 to play in regulation. The Seawolves were unable to find the equalizer in the waning moments.

“They (WWU) just played better than we did in the second half,” commented Oberkirch.

WWU had a decisive edge in shots, 14-5 overall and 8-1 in the second half, but the game was played much closer than that number would indicate.

September 14, 2008 • Turlock, Calif.

TURLOCK, Calif- A first half goal by Tracy Webster held up on Sunday afternoon as Sonoma State took a road victory from No. 24 Cal State Stanislaus by a 1-0 margin. The win lifts the Seawolves to 5-1-0, 1-0-0 CCAA on the season. The Warriors drop to 4-1-1, 0-1-0 CCAA.

Though the Warriors had several opportunities early, it would be the Seawolves capitalizing when Webster punched the ball past the keeper off a double assist by freshman Kiley Brown and Taylor Edmonds.

It was the fourth goal of the season for Webster, a sopho-more from Sebastopol, tying her for the team lead with Alexica Bosque.

The Seawolves would be out shot 8-4 in the first half, but they stepped up the pressure in the second, out shooting the Warriors 6-3 in an attempt to get an insurance goal. That goal would not come, but it would not matter as goalkeeper Courtney Grixti and the defensive unit of Lindsay Catton, Maddy Drake, and Allison Kern, among others held strong.

SAN FRANCISCO STATE 0September 19, 2008 • Rohnert Park, Calif.

ROHNERT PARK, Calif- Senior Kayce Brawley scored twice in the second half on Friday afternoon to lead the 16th-ranked Sonoma State women’s soccer team to a 2-0 win over San Francisco State at Seawolf Field in Rohnert Park. The win preserves the Seawolves’ perfect CCAA record as they go to 6-1-0, 2-0-0 CCAA. The Gators fall to 3-3-1, 2-1-0 CCAA.

At 6-1-0, the Seawolves are off to their best start since 1999, when they were 6-0-1 through their first seven games.

Head coach Luke Oberkirch was pleased with his team’s performance, saying “This was a good victory against a team that was on a roll (SF State knocked off No. 3 UC San Diego and Cal State Dominguez Hills last weekend).”

Despite not playing in the first half, or at all in the previous two games, Brawley wasted little time making her mark, scoring the game’s first goal just three minutes into the second period. Megan Cunningham crossed the ball from the left where it skipped off Taylor Edmonds and right to Brawley, who poked it in.

“I’m really proud of Kayce,” said Oberkirch, “After not playing in a couple games, to come right in and make a difference like that is outstanding. She’s an experienced player and she knows where to be.”

In the 78th minute, Brawley scored again, this time off the rebound of a shot by Brooke Peterson. Peterson was credited with an assist on the play.

The Seawolves’ defense was superb all game long, limit-ing the Gators to just three shots. SF State did attempt five corner kicks, but they were limited in actual scoring threats by the SSU back line.

Coach Oberkirch also pointed out the play of Edmonds, a freshman from Manhattan Beach, “I thought Taylor played a great game from start to finish.”

September 21, 2008 • Rohnert Park, Calif.

ROHNERT PARK, Calif- The Sonoma State women’s soccer team scored three times in the second half to pull away from Cal State Monterey Bay on Saturday, cruising to a 5-1 win in CCAA action at Seawolf Field. The sixteenth-ranked Seawolves improve to 7-1-0, 3-0-0 CCAA. The Otters are now 0-7-1, 0-4-0 CCAA.

Freshman Taylor Edmonds found the game’s first goal in the 17th minute when she poked one in off an assist from her fellow freshman, Taylor Colacion. The Otters would tie it up seventeen minutes later when Alyssa Mathesen scored from deep, making it a 1-1 game.

Head coach Luke Oberkirch said, “It took us a while to get into our game today.” However, once they got going, the Seawolves were tough to stop.

In the 40th minute, the Seawolves edged ahead again as Kayce Brawley intercepted the ball from a defender and quickly shuffled it into the goal.

Despite being out shot in the second half, the Seawolves outscored the Otters 3-0, thanks to a pair of goals from center back Lindsay Catton. Freshman Kiley Brown also scored and two of the goals were by way of assists from another freshman, Libby Moyer.

Said Oberkirch, “We’re getting points from up and down the roster. We’re extremely deep throughout the whole team and that really comes to effect on Sundays.”

Courtney Grixti went the first 73 minutes in goal before giving way to freshman Emma Dearman. The Seawolves out shot the Otters 12-8 in the game and had a 10-3 edge in corners.

ROHNERT PARK, Calif- In what head coach Luke Oberkirch called his team’s most complete performance of the year, the Sonoma State women’s soccer team defeated Hum-boldt State 2-1 on Wednesday afternoon in Rohnert Park. The seventh-ranked Seawolves run their winning streak to four in a row as they go to 8-1-0, 4-0-0 on the season. The Lumberjacks drop to 6-3-1, 2-1-1 CCAA.

Said Oberkirch, “I felt that we played our finest game of the year. We were dynamic off the ball and incredible in terms of possession.” The Seawolves allowed the Lumber-jacks to get off just one shot.

The Seawolves got out of the gate early when Alexica Bosque collected her fifth goal of the season, off an assist from Taylor Edmonds. The goal came in the eighth minute and just four minutes later, the ‘Jacks would counter when Allison Lawrence scored an unassisted goal on a breakaway. With two goals on the board in under 12 minutes, it looked like a shootout might be in the works. The SSU defense, however, thought otherwise.

After Lawrence’s goal at the 11:36 mark, the ‘Jacks would not get off another shot. The Seawolves, on the other hand, would have many opportunities. They would finally capitalize just three minutes after the break when Brittany Peterson recovered the ball in a scramble in front of the net, poking it to the net to make it 2-1.

It was the third consecutive game in which the Seawolves scored a goal in the first four minutes of the second half.

In addition to the shot advantage, the Seawolves led 7-1 on corner kicks and 10-7 in fouls.

No. 7 SONOMA STATE 3CAL STATE L.A. 2

September 28, 2008 • Rohnert Park, Calif.

ROHNERT PARK, Calif- Sophomore Jaci Davey headed the ball home off a beautiful cross from Libby Moyer three minutes into overtime to give the seventh-ranked Seawolves a 3-2 come-from-behind win over Cal State L.A. on Sunday afternoon in Rohnert Park. The Seawolves capture their fifth consecutive victory and improve to 9-1-0, 5-0-0 CCAA on the season. The Golden Eagles drop to 1-6-1, 0-5-0 CCAA.

Head coach Luke Oberkirch was pleased with his team’s win, stating “We showed a lot of guts today. This was a good win against a very good defensive team.”

The Seawolves found the game’s first goal just 2:29 in when Taylor Edmonds’ corner kick found Brittany Peter-son, who poked it in. With such a quick goal, it looked like the Seawolves might pile on a few more goals in the first half, however, the Golden Eagles tightened up their defense and would not allow another goal for nearly 78 minutes.

In the meantime, CSULA’s Khadijah Greenwood single-handedly put her team in fine position. First, on a counter attack in the 34th minute, Greenwood got the ball alone and in the clear, lofting a shot over SSU goalkeeper Courtney Grixti and into the net.

In the 73rd, with the score tied 1-1, Greenwood struck again, this time getting a feed from Sarah Le and again lofting it over Grixti.

Trailing 2-1, the Seawolves dug deep, controlling the ball and putting the pressure on the CSULA defense. They finally broke through in the 81st minute when a Lindsay Catton free kick took a fortuitous bounce, over the Golden Eagle keeper and into the net.

In overtime, the Seawolves got the game-winner when Moyer got the ball near the base line and sent a perfect cross that was met by the head of Davey and re-directed into the net.

Said Oberkirch, “I can’t say enough about the play of Jaci, Libby, and all of our reserves. What a great goal!”

“Today we showed that we have the ability to come back in a game,” said Oberkirch. In fact, it was the first time the Seawolves have come from behind to win a game this season.

The Seawolves out shot the Golden Eagles 16-4 and held a 7-2 edge in corners.

October 3, 2008 • La Jolla, Calif.

LA JOLLA, Calif- The Sonoma State women’s soccer team played their second overtime game in a row on Friday night, but this time it would be their opponents celebrating a golden goal as UC San Diego prevailed, 2-1. The 12th-ranked Seawolves (9-2-0, 5-1-0 CCAA) fall for just the second time this season and see their perfect CCAA record come to an end. UC San Diego improves to 8-2-1, 5-2-0 CCAA.

Sonoma State scored the first goal of the game just after the 33-minute mark when Lindsay Catton headed the ball in off a corner by Libby Moyer. It was the team-high sixth goal of the season for Catton as well as the team-high sixth assist of the year for Moyer.

The Seawolves would hold on to their 1-0 lead through the end of the first half and for the first part of the second half before the Tritons equalized. The tying goal came from Natasha Belak-Berger on a penalty kick.

Foul trouble would plague the Seawolves, especially in the second half. Sonoma was whistled for 20 fouls in the game compared to just ten for UCSD. The margin was even larger in the second half, 12-2, and both yellows in the game were shown to SSU.

The game-winning goal came in the sixth minute of over-time when Belak-Berger scored her second goal of the game. This time, it came off a pass from Sarah McTigue, allowing Belak-Berger to beat SSU keeper Courtney Grixti to the left post.

The Seawolves and Tritons each attempted 11 shots and four corner kicks in the game.

October 5, 2008 • Carson, Calif.

CARSON, Calif- Cal State Dominguez Hills scored four times in the second half alone to stun Sonoma State 6-2 on Sunday afternoon in Carson. It was the second straight loss for the 12th-ranked Seawolves as they fall to 9-3-0, 5-2-0 CCAA. The Toros improve to 8-5-0, 6-2-0 CCAA.

Melanie DeSalvo scored the first goal of the game for Dominguez Hills in the sixth minute off an assist by Paige Peel. The Seawolves would be quick to answer when, just four minutes later, Tracy Webster netted her fifth goal of the season via a Megan Cunningham assist.

Just over two minutes before halftime, the Seawolves took their only lead of the contest when Kayce Brawley scored off a Katie Parucha feed to make it 2-1. The strike was Brawley’s fifth goal of the season as well. It looked like the Seawolves would enter the half with a lead, but the Toros had other plans, tying things at two with a Paige Peel goal just seventeen seconds before the break.

The second half was all Toros. Though the shot count was close (just 10-9 in favor of CSUDH), four of the Toros’ shots found net. The first two came off the foot of Jessica Murphy to quickly turn a 2-2 tie into a 4-2 Dominguez lead. In the 73rd minute, Karina Jahn scored her first goal of the season. Two minutes laster Kelly Vasquez posted her fourth, to make it a 6-2 Toro advantage.

The six goals were easily the most allowed by the Seawolves this season. Coming into Sunday’s match, the Seawolves had allowed just nine goals all season long.

The Seawolves actually out shot the Toros in the game, 19-15. The shot advantage was 10-5 in favor of Sonoma in the first half.

CSU SAN BERNARDINO 2October 10, 2008 • Rohnert Park, Calif.

ROHNERT PARK, Calif- Despite out-shooting Cal State San Bernardino by a wide margin, the Sonoma State women’s soccer team had to settle for a 2-2 tie with the Coyotes on Friday at Seawolf Field in Rohnert Park. The 23rd-ranked Seawolves earn their first draw of the season as they go to 9-3-1, 5-2-1 CCAA. The Coyotes are now 7-3-3, 5-2-2 CCAA.

Despite being a little frustrated with the end result, head coach Luke Oberkirch was encouraged by his team’s performance, saying, “We played really well. I’m proud of the way we performed.”

The Seawolves held the Coyotes to just three shots and through the first half CSUSB actually had more goals than shots (1-0).

Sonoma State got on the board early when Taylor Colacion collected her first collegiate goal off an assist by fellow freshman Libby Moyer in the eighth minute. It was Moyer’s CCAA leading seventh assist of the season.

The Seawolves would lead 1-0 for most of the first half, but in the 43rd minute a ball deflected off an SSU player and into their net for an own goal.

The score stayed tied until 71st minute when CSUSB’s Kristina Gomez took advantage of a defensive letdown and beat SSU keeper Courtney Grixti in a one-on-one situation. Trailing late, the Seawolves would find the equalizer in the 75th when a Lindsay Catton free kick bounced once and into the right corner of the net in front of a stunned Coyote defense. It was Catton’s team-high seventh goal of the season.

Sonoma would have several promising opportunities late in the game and in overtime, including a shot by Taylor Edmonds that hit the cross bar and the ensuing rebound shot by Jaci Davey that went wide in the 105th.

Said Oberkirch, “We had a few close calls, but that’s the way it goes sometimes.”

October 12, 2008 • Rohnert Park, Calif.

ROHNERT PARK, Calif- Sonoma State scored three times in the first half, then cruised in the second to a 3-0 victory over Cal Poly Pomona in CCAA women’s soccer action on Sunday afternoon in Rohnert Park. Alexica Bosque scored the first two goals as the 23rd-ranked Seawolves improve to 10-3-1, 6-2-1 CCAA. The Broncos fall to 6-6-2, 3-6-1 CCAA.

“This was a good win for us after Friday’s tough tie,” said SSU head coach Luke Oberkirch.

Bosque got the game’s first goal in just the fourth minute when she was set up by a lob from freshman Megan Cun-ningham. Twenty minutes later, Bosque doubled the lead when she found net off a Brittany Peterson feed.

Said Oberkirch, “Those were two great goals by Alexica. She’s been working real hard and she definitely deserved them.”

Right before the half, the Seawolves put the game away when a Brittany Finitz corner kick was headed by Taylor Colacion and then booted in by Lindsay Catton. It was the team-leading eighth goal of the year for the Seawolves’ defender.

Courtney Grixti and the Sonoma State defense was solid, allowing just eight shots and preserving the shutout. Many of the Broncos’ shots were from a distance.

The Seawolves out shot the Broncos 13-8.

SONOMA STATE 1ACADEMY OF ART

October 15, 2008 • Rohnert Park, Calif.

ROHNERT PARK, Calif- Though it wouldn’t be classified as one of their best performances of the year, the Sonoma State women’s soccer team was just good enough for a 1-0 win over upstart Academy of Art on Wednesday afternoon at Seawolf Field. The non-conference victory pushes the Seawolves’ record to 11-3-1. The Urban Knights fall to 2-9-1.

Said SSU head coach Luke Oberkirch, “It didn’t seem like we could put the ball in the net today for anything. You have to give credit to AAU...they did a good job. They have some very good players.”

The Seawolves had several chances to score early, but shot attempts continuously avoided the net by mere feet. SSU was finally able to break through in the 25th minute. Taylor Edmonds poked the ball on a quick corner to Brittany Peterson, who sliced it through the Urban Knight defense. It was the third goal of the year for Peterson and the sixth assist for Edmonds.

Oberkirch used his reserve squad for most of the second half. 23 different Sonoma State players saw the field in all.

Sonoma State had a 16-2 advantage in shot attempts and a 5-0 edge in corners. Courtney Grixti and Emma Dear-man combined for the team’s seventh shutout of the year.

SONOMA STATE 2HUMBOLDT STATE 1October 19, 2008 • Arcata, Calif.

ARCATA, Calif- Freshman Taylor Edmonds scored the game-winner seven minutes into overtime to give Sonoma State a 2-1 win over Humboldt State on Sunday afternoon in Arcata. The Seawolves used a dominating overtime performance to pick up their 12th win of the season and go to 12-3-1, 7-2-1 CCAA overall. The Lumber-jacks fall to 8-7-1, 4-5-1 CCAA.

The Seawolves took a 1-0 lead in the 33rd minute when Brittany Peterson scored off a Lindsay Catton free kick. Their lead would hold until the 56th minute when the ‘Jacks broke through on a Megan Kobler strike.

After 90 minutes of fairly even play (shots were tied at 16 entering OT), the Seawolves controlled play in overtime. Their first two shots of the extra frame missed, but Edmonds made sure that the third time was the charm when she collected a pass from Brittany Peterson and drove it into the net.

The victory completes a season sweep of Sonoma State over Humboldt State. Both games were decided by 2-1 scores.

SEASIDE, Calif- Freshman forward Taylor Edmonds scored two goals, both of them in a dominant first half, as Sonoma State drilled Cal State Monterey Bay 5-1 in CCAA action on Friday in Seaside. The Seawolves scored four times in the first half and then put it on cruise control as they improve to 13-3-1, 8-2-1 CCAA on the year. The Otters fall to 1-17-1, 0-13-0 CCAA.

It was the second time this year that the Seawolves have beaten the Otters by a 5-1 score.

Sonoma State’s leading scorer, Lindsay Catton wasted little time getting the Seawolves on the board on Friday as she scored from 30 yards out just 49 seconds in. Quick goals are nothing new to the junior who owns the school record for quickest goal to start a game (:20). It was Catton’s ninth goal of the season.

The Seawolves made it 2-0 in the sixth minute when Edmonds scored the first of her two goals off an assist from Brittany Peterson.

The score would remain 2-0 for much of the first half, but two more Sonoma goals in the last 12 minutes gave them an insurmountable 4-0 lead. Edmonds picked up goal number two at the 33:01 mark and then another freshman, Katie Parucha, scored in the 41st minute off an assist from Jaci Davey.

Davey would also have the assist on the Seawolves’ final goal of the game, which came off the boot of Ali Cheadle in the 51st minute.

CSUMB got one goal back, at the 75 minute mark, to make it a 5-1 final score.

Sonoma State out shot Cal State Monterey Bay by a 19-8 margin. They also had a 6-3 edge in corner kicks.

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif- The Sonoma State women’s soccer team was shut out for the first time this season as San Francisco State emerged with a 2-0 win on Sunday in San Francisco. The loss snaps a four-game winning streak for the Seawolves as they drop to 13-4-1, 8-3-1 CCAA. The Gators improve to 12-6-2, 10-3-1 CCAA.

The win gives the Gators a six-point lead in the CCAA North Division standings, though they have played two games more than the Seawolves have.

The Gators set the tone early as Zoila Marquez scored the game’s first goal just under eight minutes in. Marquez’s blast from 25 yards out was assisted by Lauren McAulay.

Sonoma State managed just three shots in the first half, but turned up the intensity in the second, out shooting SF State, 6-4. The only goal scored in the second half, though, would come from the Gators’ Morgan Davison off a Lauren Candia corner kick.

The Gators held a narrow 10-9 advantage in shots and they took five corners to Sonoma’s three.

CAL STATE STANISLAUS 2October 31, 2008 • Rohnert Park, Calif.

ROHNERT PARK, Calif- Sonoma State scored three unanswered goals in the rain on Friday afternoon to defeat Cal State Stanislaus 3-2 and clinch a berth in next week’s California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Tournament. The Seawolves, ranked sixth in the west region, improve to 14-4-1, 9-3-1 CCAA. The Warriors drop to 8-6-4, 4-6-3 CCAA.

The Seawolves will be heading to the post-season for the first time since 2006. As of this release, the CCAA Tourna-ment field is not set. The event, however, will be held November 7th and 9th in La Jolla (UC San Diego).

On Friday, the Warriors got on the board quickly, scoring a goal in the sixth minute when Bri McClain broke away for a 1-v-1 strike. The assist was credited to Gennaka Fox, who set up McClain’s dash to the net.

The score was doubled to 2-0 exactly eleven minutes later when Adrienne Sorenson scored after a Jenna Kasch free kick was flicked on to her by Melissa Phillips.

Down, but not out, the Seawolves began their run in the 33rd minute when Jaci Davey scored off a Brittany Peterson feed. It would be Davey’s fifth goal of the season and the first of Peterson’s two assists in the game.

Just two and a half minutes later, the Seawolves would equalize when Alexica Bosque scored off a corner from Lindsay Catton. Bosque’s eighth goal of the season made it 2-2 going in to the half.

Both teams struggled to generate offense on the muddy pitch in the second half. In 45 minutes of action, only five shots were attempted between the teams. Sonoma had one breakaway opportunity, but a Tracy Webster attempt came up just wide.

Said Oberkirch, “The conditions definitely played a factor. Neither team was really able to do what they wanted offensively.”

In the sixth minute of overtime, the Seawolves finally broke through for the game-winner when Brittany Peterson’s shot bounced off the crossbar before being blasted back home by Webster. It was the sixth goal of the season for Webster.

“I’m really proud of the team,” said Oberkirch, “After those first fifteen or so minutes, we played great. What a big-time comeback...to be down 2-0 and win a game in these conditions.”

The Seawolves had an 11-6 advantage on shots and an 8-3 edge in corners.

November 2, 2008 •Santa Rosa, Calif.

ROHNERT PARK, Calif- Sophomore Jaci Davey had a goal and an assist on Sunday to help lead Sonoma State to a 2-0 win over rival Chico State at Trione Fields in Santa Rosa. The win pushes the Seawolves into a first place tie atop the CCAA North Division standings with San Francisco State. The Seawolves will enter next week’s CCAA Tourna-ment in La Jolla with a record of 15-4-1, 10-3-1 CCAA. The Wildcats see their season conclude at 7-10-3, 3-8-3 CCAA.

The Seawolves have reached 15 wins in a season for the first time since 1999, when they went 15-2-4.

Said head coach Luke Oberkirch, “I’m proud of the team. They’ve been consistent all season and to go into the tournament with momentum like this is fantastic.”

Davey picked up the first goal of the game in the 37th minute when she gathered the ball, juked, and beat the Chico State keeper from several yards out. It would be her sixth goal of the season and it would hold up until there were under three minutes to go when Davey fed Tracy Webster on a breakaway to set the final margin at 2-0. Webster scored a goal for the seventh time this year.

The Seawolves held a 6-4 shot advantage in the first half, but they trailed 4-2 in shots in the second half. SSU employed a bend, but don’t break defense that was effec-tive in keeping the Wildcats off the scoreboard. Courtney Grixti earned her fifth shutout of the season with a four-save performance.

Prior to the game, the Seawolves honored four student-athletes playing in their final home game: Kayce Brawley, Maddy Drake, Brittany Peterson, and Brooke Peterson.

LA JOLLA, Calif- The Sonoma State women’s soccer team was shut out for the second time this year as Cal State Dominguez Hills emerged with their second victory over the Seawolves in as many tries, 2-0, in a semi-final match at the CCAA women’s soccer Championships Friday night at Triton Soccer Field. The loss drops Sonoma to 15-5-1, while the Toros improve to 13-8-0.

After going over 40 minutes without a goal, Cal State Dominguez Hills broke the scoreless tie with under three minutes left in the first half. Melissa Livergood centered a pass from the right side, and Kelly Matosian gathered the ball and chipped it over the keeper’s head for her third goal of the year.

Minutes before that, Sonoma State missed on their best opportunity to score all night. Kiley Brown received a long outlet pass and accelerated down the field past two Toro defenders, but she was unable to capitalize, because keeper Alyssa Congdon sprinted out of the box causing her shot to sail wide left of the post.

The Toros out-shot the Seawolves 11-4 in the first half, and 18-8 for the game.

Cal State Dominguez Hills tacked on an insurance goal early in the second half when Danielle Shoemake was able to slide past the Seawolf defense and receive a pass from Yvonne Vasquez. She then blasted the ball into the upper left corner from five yards out.

Goalkeeper Courtney Grixti tied a season-high for saves in a contest with five tonight.
