MAZALTOV

Participants in the recent Key Workers Mission to Israel were privileged to celebrate the 13 year partnership between UIA Australia and the Arava through Partnership 2000. This celebration marked a crucial milestone in the connections between the people in this pioneering southern desert region of Israel, and members of the Jewish community in Australia.

HOW IS KEREN HAYESOD RESPONDING TO THE PEOPLE IN THE SOUTH?

RENOVATION OF BOMB SHELTERS The renovation of many bomb shelters in the South has been a priority, improving the living conditions of hundreds of citizens living under the threat of missiles.

NET@Students of the Net@ program from the South participated in a week-long educational camp which included technological studies and fun activities.

YOUTH FUTURES341 Youth Futures children from the South received ongoing support from their “trustees”, including coordination of mental treatment, meetings with social workers and respite activities.

AYALIMStudent Villages in the North hosted children from the South. Many Ayalim students also volunteered in the South to operate public bomb shelters.

As Israel draws breath after the recent hostilities in Gaza, we gear up for our UIA Victoria 2009 campaign. The future of our programs, the majority of which are directed to the disadvantaged youth of Israel, is critically dependant on your continued support. When making your commitment through UIA this year, please join us in showing that our unique Victorian community rallies for Israel in good times and bad.

ESTHER FRENKIEL CHAIRMAN UIA VICTORIA FEBRUARY 2009

MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN

02 — 03

FEBRUARY 2009/5769

_____

After 22 days of battle, a cease fire was declared. The majority of IDF soldiers have left Gaza, however, they continue to be on high alert. The people of the South are slowly returning to routine life. As an organization which responds to the urgent needs of the State of Israel, Keren Hayesod – UIA, together with its partners, immediately assisted the citizens of the South. These are some of the activities put into action during Operation Cast Lead, many of which still need funding:

Even though the war has ended - OUR WORK IS NOT OVER - ISRAEL STILL NEEDS YOU

In preparation for the 2009 campaign, a Canvasser ’s Training Session was held on Wednesday 11th February at Kimberley Gardens. Guest Speaker Fentahun Assefa-Dawit, the NSW UIA Shaliach, provided a detailed account of his upbringing in Ethiopia leading to his aliyah. He relayed his experiences of working in an absorption centre in Israel for 4 years which enabled him to assist others and complete the circle of the receiver giving back.

Also speaking was David Jones, the Director of St Vincent’s Hospital Foundation. David covered canvassing strategies, highlighting that to effectively encourage others to give, canvassers must be donors to the cause. The evening was successful in providing UIA’s canvasser’s with both a comprehensive briefing and the motivation to head into the 2009 campaign equipped to deal with the current economic pressures, and Israel’s ongoing needs.

WOMEN’S DIVISION

Jessica Queller, who grew up in New York City, has always had a strong interest in literature and theatre, having spent her junior year of college studying abroad in England. She majored in English literature whilst simultaneously acting professionally in Boston and at age 28 moved to Los Angeles to expand her career to include television and film. Once there, she decided she would rather create and write stories than act them out, resulting in her writing for popular television shows including Felicity, Gilmore Girls, One Tree Hill and Gossip Girl.

At age 34, Jessica tested positive for The Breast Cancer Gene, giving her up to an 87% chance of developing breast cancer and a 44% chance of ovarian cancer. Jessica’s mother had suffered from both diseases and ultimately died of ovarian cancer. After testing positive, she wrote her first book called “Pretty Is What Changes” which discusses the burden of knowledge that comes with such information.

DON’T MISS KARNIT GOLDWASSER AT THE 2009 COMMUNITY LUNCH

Karnit Goldwasser is the widow of IDF soldier Ehud Goldwasser who was abducted together with Eidad Regev by Lebanon’s Hezbollah movement during the Second Lebanon-Israel War. Karnit used every fibre of her being lobbying and addressing both local and international leaders in her attempt to gain the release of Ehud and his fellow soldiers. After a long struggle Ehud and Eidad’s bodies were returned to Israel in July 2008 for a Jewish burial. Her courage, spirit and tenacity are an example to all.

In response to Operation Cast Lead, YUIA put together a Sessions event on Tuesday 6 th Januar y a t Be th Weizmann which attracted over 100 community members. Mr Ilan Sztulman, an Israeli Spokesperson from the Foreign Ministry addressed the group via video link up. Additionally, Mr Dor Shapira of the Israeli Embassy in Canberra provided a comprehensive South Israel and Gaza update. This was followed by a Q&A session, during which he addressed the concerns of the community. This engaging conversation was well received by the crowd who found this event interesting, relevant and timely.

David Boyar has recently become the new YUIA chairman. His key focuses are educating the community about the history of the UIA, developing new projects and events that engage the community and encouraging people to give to Israel. When asked what his intentions are in this new role, he explains that, “my vision is that YUIA will become a significant financial asset to Israel and a rich source for community cultural events.”

Highlights of the Mission were:• Visiting the lone soldiers in K’far Saba Absorption Centre

• Home hospitality in the Arava

• Visiting the solar energy plants at Nitzana

• Touring the Golan Region

• Hearing the stories of representatives from Nitzana, Ayalim and other UIA - KH Projects

• Interacting with guest speakers including diplomatic correspondents, Brigade Commanders, and a Foreign Affairs spokesman

• Tour of a chocolate factory, IDF base, seeing the Tel Aviv Scouts, floating in the dead sea and many other attractions

• Attending the award night for scholarship recipients in honor of P.M. Kevin Rudd at Hebrew University

Participants were privileged to celebrate the memorable Bar Mitzvah ceremony of three boys on the mission which the UIA arranged. Jacqui Hyman, mother of one of the Barmitzvah boy’s writes, “It was a once in life time unforgettable and spiritually moving experience. Despite the cold weather, David Hyman, Ari Josefsberg and Jayden Yarrow rolled up their sleeves, donned tefillin and proudly read from a beautiful Torah facing the Kotel”. Everyone joined in singing and dancing, creating wonderful ruach.

During this Mission the adults learn more about the State of Israel and their children are provided with the foundations of Ahavat Israel (love of Israel) and a stepping stone for their later and further engagement with the Jewish State. The Key Workers Mission over the last 5 years has become a most important element in strengthening the special relationship between UIA Victoria, the Melbourne Jewish Community and the State of Israel.
