New look Trojans look to play up tempoBy JOHN STEGEMANPDT Sports Editor
The Portsmouth boys bas-ketball program will have alittle bit different look thisseason. The Trojans sport a new
coach and will have a startinglineup with some differentfaces. The only player returning
for Portsmouth this year withsignificant varsity experienceis Forrest Johnson and the 6-1 guard will be expected tolead a team that will be rely-ing on its speed and athleti-cism."I think our trademark is
going to be we're quick andathletic," first-year headcoach Gene Collins said."We're going to be somewhatlacking in size in the post andwe're going to have to make
up for that with effort andquickness."Collins, a varsity assistant
last year, takes over a teamthat went 10-12 last seasonunder former coach JoshShoemaker. Collins’ coach-ing experience includes lastyear as a PHS assistant coachand 18 years as an assistantcoach at Shawnee StateUniversity.Being a part of the
Portsmouth program last yearhas helped in Collins' transi-tion."I think that familiarity is
huge," Collins said. "At thispoint we've had huge buy infrom the kids. The kids likewhat we're doing. It's beentough. We've done a lot ofrunning, a lot more thanthey've probably been accus-tomed too."
With a new coach comes anew system."The biggest change we'll
have is our style of play andhow we go about playing,"Collins said. "We want toplay fast and put a lot of pres-sure on our opponents anddefensively we want ouropponents to know they're infor a battle."While Johnson is expected
to be among the team leaders,Collins said a pair of otherseniors will need to step up aswell. London Malone, a 5-9guard, and PatrickUnderwood, a 6-3 forward, both played primarily on thejunior varsity team last sea-son but are expected to makebig contributions this season.Underwood is one of five
players on the Trojans roster6-foot-3 or taller. No player
though stands taller than 6-foot-5.With a roster that will look
much different from last sea-son and a new coach, howPortsmouth will fare in thealways tough SEOAL Southwill be a matter much specu-lation. After a losing season the
year before though, Collinsfinds comfort in theunknown."That's kind of an unknown
at this point," he said. "Withthe staff being new and mostof our players being newthat's something I really can'ttell you. The good thing is thestaff is new and the playersare new so the unknown is agood thing for us.”

Boldman, Lady Trojans ready for new yearBy JOHN STEGEMANPDT Sports Editor
Portsmouth struggledthrough last season, winningjust two games. With a new coach and a hand-
ful of players taking on newroles, this season should be bet-ter.Bob Boldman, a coaching
veteran who led the NorthwestLady Mohawks to a 61-61record over six seasons, includ-ing a share of the 2006 SOC IItitle and a sectional champi-onship the same year, takes overa program with potential.Leading the way for
Portsmouth this season willlikely be the team's two seniors— Ashleigh Link and Ruthie
Stanley.Stanley will step into a larger
role this season as a startingpower forward. Link will beexpected to score from the 2-spot this season as the pointguard duties have been takenover by Hannah Foster, a newarrival to the program."(The seniors) are the two
we're going to be counting onall year for leadership,"Boldman said. "They have greatattitudes and they are great rolemodels for our younger kidscoming up... (Foster) is going tobe a tremendous point guard forus. We're very excited about herbeing there."Cailyn Rodriguez will start at
small forward and LatayshaMcGinnis will start at center for
Portsmouth this season. With players taking on some
different roles this season,Boldman has implemented adifferent system that will bemore methodical than what theLady Trojans used last season."I would say we're going to
play a less up tempo game withmore of a pattern offense,"Boldman said. "We want tocontrol the tempo of the game. We're probably going to rely alot on defense."After the starting lineup,
Portsmouth hopes for contribu-tions from its five freshmen aswell as Kimia Ruffin and Ri-Chiel McGraw, who Boldmanrefers to as "Bean.""Bean is probably the most
athletic girl we have on the bas-
ketball team as far as runningand jumping," Boldman said."She's a slasher type basketballplayer."Portsmouth's conference
schedule as a member of theSEOAL is always tough andseveral teams are expected to bestrong again. The LadyTrojans won't get any breaks inthe non-conference scheduleeither though with opponentslike Waverly and SouthWebster."We can't take a break any
night and expect to win anygames," Boldman said.

The Lady Pirates returnthree starters from their 11-win team of 2008-2009 whilelosing three seniors to gradua-tion. The Wheelersburg girls'hope to build off a sectionaltitle win and re-establish them-selves in SOC II basketball."We lost three seniors from
last year's team — SarahSchmidt, Lainee Clay andJamie Clevenger,"Wheelersburg coach DustySpradlin said. "And we haveback Logan Barrick, KatieKnapp and Brittany Prater asseniors... who have played sig-nificant minutes on varsity the
last two seasons."Sophomore Erica Schmidt, a
5-foot-5 ball handler, will be aplayer to watch this season asthe underclassman is comingoff a successful first year."Erica Schmidt played in
every varsity game last seasonas a freshman," Spradlin said."We expect her to start as ourpoint guard this year and makea difference."Sisters Katie and Molly
Knapp, both upperclassmen, will be given significant min-utes and could be impact play-ers this season as well. The Lady Pirates however
have suffered from costlyinjuries this preseason that will
affect the starting lineup aswell as the rotation off thebench. The key in the earlyseason will be developing all-important team chemistrybetween veterans and new-comers."We will really have to work
to blend together the returningvarsity players with those whoplayed junior varsity last sea-son," Spradlin said."Especially with how bangedup we are right now."Wheelersburg's conference
will be as competitive this sea-son as it has been in seasonspast. The Lady Oaks have atarget on their backs whileteams among the top of the
division lurk in the shadows. The experienced coach
believes his team is averagewithin a league of improvingball clubs."The SOC II is tough with
Oak Hill, Valley and SouthWebster," Spradlin said."Right now we look to be atthe middle of the pack."The next six games for the
Lady Pirates will give themgood measure of their stand-ing in the SOC II as eachopponent is a league rival.Wheelersburg kicks off itsconference schedule tomor-row night as the LadyPirates travel to McDermottto face Northwest.

Challenges face ’Burg in 2009-10By JOHN STEGEMANPDT Sports Editor
WHEELERSBURG —Wheelersburg basketball willhave some challenges to over-come to win an SOC II titlethis season — but that's noexcuse according to coachTom Barrick. The Pirates have a couple of
players still hurting fromfootball season and face thechallenge of integrating newplayers into the system withlimited practice time."Game one will not wait on
our players to get healthy,"Barrick said. "We tell our kidswe can't use this as an excuse. We still have high expecta-tions. We still expect to com-pete and be successful. Youcan't let adversity give you anexcuse not to be successful."Last season with a young
team the Pirates still went 16-6, losing in the sectional final. While it was a winning sea-
son, the Pirates got away fromtheir traditional style of playto better suit their personnel. With leading scorer AndyStegman back, the return tothe program of Tyler Langand the new addition ofAndrew Bendolph, Barrickhopes to get back to the styleof play that wonWheelersburg an SOC II titlein 2008 — once the playersare healthy that is.Currently Bendolph is
recovering from a broken footand returning starter BrandonSchankweiler has been outwith a separated shoulder —both injuries coming in foot-ball season.Once the injuries heal
though, Wheelersburg willsport an experienced teamwith adequate depth."We've got some experi-
ence," Barrick said. "We havesome kids who had an oppor-tunity to play varsity basket-
ball last year...We've got someguys we believe will fill theroles that we need. Your sixthman doesn't need to be a lead-ing scorer... We've got guyswe really think will be able tofill the roles we need in thesixth, seventh, eighth andninth spots."Filling a major role again on
offense will be Stegman. The6-foot-6 junior averaged 17points per game last season."We're going to have to be a
more balanced offensive teamthan what we were last year,"Barrick said. "Andy kind ofcarried the load for us lastyear. Some of those playersare going to have to step up."Lang, who started as a soph-
omore but missed last seasonbecause of anACL injury, willprovide more help on offenseas will Schankweiler andShane Ward.Bendolph, who started for
Portsmouth last season, could
bring added athleticism andball handling."It's a different year and
everyone is going to have dif-ferent roles," Barrick said."We don't want the same guysplaying the same roles thisyear that they had last year. It'simportant that they developinto a new team and a newidentity and a new team withdifferent roles."With new players playing in
new roles, Wheelersburgwould like to get back to thebusiness of winning champi-onships."We were a lot slower last
year than we've been in thepast...," Barrick said. "We'dlike to get back to the stylethat we were playing beforelast year. We've got to getexperience playing at the levelwe were before."

Bradford returns home to WestBy CHRIS DUNHAMPDT Sports Writer
WEST PORTSMOUTH —When West takes the floor forits Dec. 4 opener, it will do sowith its fourth head coach inthree years.Travis Bradford, a 1993
graduate of West, who hadmost recently been the headcoach at East returns to hisalma mater to change then sta-bilize the Senators program."We're doing a lot of things
differently than what they'vedone in the past," Bradfordsaid. "I'm not saying it's betteror worse, but it's 100 percentdifferent in what we're empha-sizing and not emphasizing awhole lot. We're in a big tran-sition right now... One thing Ilet them know is it's not going
to be a quick fix project. We'retrying to build the foundationright now and get the funda-mentals solid first."Those fundamentals come
at both ends of the floor withdefense being a major focus ofthe team in its preseason prac-tices."We're going to try to estab-
lish solid, half court mandefense before we focus onanything else," Bradford said."I don't think that's a big secretto anybody. That's what I'vealways done as a coach...We're not going to get toofancy or do a lot of trapping oranything at that. We're goingto try to be solid, keep the ballout of the paint and blockout."On the offensive end, the
Senators will rely on their
depth and athleticism to takeadvantage, even without a truepost presence."One thing we're not
blessed with is a lot of size,"Bradford said. "We're notgoing to have a lot of guys inthe post that we're going to beable to throw the ball into andlet them dominate inside. We're going to have to use ourquickness and athleticism onthe perimeter and take advan-tage of that both offensivelyand defensively."The Senators boast some
experience this season withfive seniors, led by returningstarter Tyler Austin. Alsoreturning for West are juniorTrevon Pendleton and sopho-more Levi Ratliff who saw alot of varsity action a yearago.
In returning to his almamater, Bradford would like toteach this group about playingwith pride."Coming back to the school
you graduated from, you'vegot that sense of pride in theschool," Bradford said."That's something I'm tryingto instill into the players."That sense of pride is some-
thing that will treat theSenators well as they continueto build on the West side."Right now, I want us to be
competitive," Bradford said."I don't want a situation wherewe lose enthusiasm becausewe're not competitive ingames. I'm not going to pick anumber of wins and losses oranything like that. First youhave to get competitive, thenyou start to win."
Three seniors leadSenators into 2009By CHRIS DUNHAMPDT Sports Writer
WEST PORTSMOUTH —This year, the Lady Senatorstake the floor with more expe-rience than the squad of ayear ago."Last year we only had one
senior," West coach GregMaynard said. "We've gotthree this year and all threeare starters. That really bringsus a lot of help through seniorleadership."That trio — Christin Graf,
Becca Mosley and TesaConley boast a wealth of var-sity basketball experience andwill be the keys to Westimproving on its 2-19 markfrom a year ago."Christin Graf is just a phe-
nomenal basketball player,"Maynard said. "Her leader-ship has been tremendous. She's all over the court. No
matter (what school she wentto), she'd be starting some-where for them. RebeccaMosley is the same way.Anything I ask of her shedoes."He also talked about
Conley's work to improve inthe offseason and said heexpects some big things fromher.Joining the seniors will be
junior Taylor Newman and awealth of underclassmen."We've got just one junior
in Taylor Newman," Maynardsaid. "She really helps us abunch. Our three sophomoresare Cheyanne White,McKenzie Irwin and LexeyKegley. Then we have anextremely talented freshmangroup that went undefeated as7th graders and 8th graders. They've brought a little spark

Valley looks to continue winningBy ALI KEATONPDT Sports Writer
LUCASVILLE — Pressuredefense and fast-paced offensehelpedValley to a second-placeleague finish in 2008-2009.The Indians tallied 17 wins
to just five losses a season agoand tied for second withWheelersburg in the SOC II.Quite an accomplishment con-sidering the 7-14 record of2007-2008."We really turned things
around,” Valley coach MarkVillinger said. “We had a greatgroup of seniors. Three of thefour started for us. We had agreat chemistry and greatbench play. It was just one ofthose seasons that was very, very fun to live through."The three starters lost to
graduation were Treg
Cunningham, CameronArbaugh and Zach Gibson.Cunningham and Arbaughwere both team captains andthe leaders of a season ago.Fortunately for Valley the
leaders in the score book areback in the starting lineup.Senior Zach Utley, who last
season earned an All-StateHonorable Mention nod, isreturning as leading scorerfrom 2008-2009. While sec-ond-leading scorer and theteam's top rebounder, BlakeYates, is just in his second year, along with five of his sopho-more classmates."We have a very unique mix
on our varsity this year, towhere we have four seniors, two juniors and six sopho-mores," Villinger said. "Thatwill play into a very uniquerotation for us. Early on we
will be working on blendingthose two classes (seniors andsophomores). We have a lot ofnew faces that we'll be blend-ing in, obviously three newstarters."Joining Utley and Yates on
the floor for the jump ball willbe senior point guard TylerKeller and returning varsityplayer Johnny Webb. For thefinal starting position, theIndians' two tallest will sharetime."Either B.J. Coleman or
Robbie Dwyer will start at thepost position for us," Villingersaid. "Basically, both will seethe same amount of playingtime. It just depends on who'sdoing what during theevening."The remaining roster will be
well-used as coach Villingerplans on rotating 10 players on
a nightly basis. Similar to lastseason, the Indians prepare toattack with run-and-gunoffense and full-court, pressuredefense."We hope to maintain our
same style of play, pressurebasketball, running up anddown the floor and putting itup," Villinger said. "We like toplay that way and we like torotate a lot of guys. We reallywant to pick up where we leftoff last year. I feel like we havea lot more size (this season)...That is probably our biggestdifference."Valley opens the season
Friday night when the Indianshost the South Point Pointerson Dec. 4th.

Lot of talent returning for Lady IndiansBy ALI KEATONPDT Sports Writer
LUCASVILLE —Returning every player fromthe 2008-2009 roster is agreat start to what the LadyIndians want to accomplishthis basketball season — anSOC II title."We've got everybody com-
ing back this year and ourstrength this year is definitelythe seniors," Valley coachMark Merritt said. "(They)are three- and four-yearstarters and know our pro-gram inside and out. Theyknow what it takes to be suc-cessful at places like Minford,Wheelersburg and Oak Hill...We took care of home courtlast year, we won nine andlost one. But with Oak Hill
being so dominant last year, the championship was just outof reach."Leading the way for Valley
will be starting seniorsMichelle Mains, Kassie Coxand Jordan Arbaugh."Jordan is our center and
pretty much our leader,"Merritt said. "Michelle playspoint guard and off guard, sheleads by example. She justdoes her job night in and nightout. Kassie Cox does a greatjob in the paint, intimidatessome people and she changesa lot of shots."Significant time will also be
played by junior defensive-specialist Shelby Ellis and apair of sophomores, WhitneyBear and Carrie Coriell."Shelby draws the player on
the opposing team who is the
best offensive threat, sheworks hard on defense,"Merritt said. "We're lookingfor her to score a little bitmore this year. For Whitney,we hope with that one year'sexperience as a freshman thatshe can put some more pointson the board. (Coriell), whogot some playing time lastyear, we look for her to scorea little bit this year."Also returning is senior
Miranda Cunningham, whowill see playing time alongwith juniors Mahaliah Taylor,Kaitlyn Patrick and BreonnaBaldridge. Courtney Crabtreeand McKenzie Coriell fill outthe varsity roster."Our expectation this year,
as always, is to compete forthe SOC championship,"Merritt said. "Oak Hill was
pretty dominant last year...But we gave them a goodgame at the end of the season,I think we improved towardthe end of the season."With such a veteran team,
the Lady Indians will taketheir shot in the competitiveSOC II. Valley will have to gothrough the defending MightyOaks, who have sat atop theleague for most of the decade, and the Lady Jeeps of SouthWebster, who have possessedthe trophy as recently as2007-2008."I think that will be our
goal, to improve every gameand at the end have chance tocompete for the SOC champi-onship," Merritt said.

Brandon Malone and AshtonMiller, aswell as another skilledsophomore Greg Pearson."South Webster, the smallest

Cook, 6 seniors return to lead South Webster
By ALI KEATONPDT Sports Writer
SOUTH WEBSTER —Coming off a 17-7 season asthe runner-up in SOC II,behind the Mighty Oaks,South Webster has much tolook forward to in 2009-2010.The Lady Jeeps' are admit-
tedly small and might have adisadvantage in the post butthey hope to push the ball withtheir guard-heavy lineup. With pressure defense,
South Webster will look toconvert opponent turnoversinto points.A unique spread of players
and classes makes up the LadyJeeps' program. Seven seniors, one junior, two sophomoresand seven freshmen fill the
South Webster varsity and JVrosters. This after losing bothErin Sherman and Erin Mooreto graduation last year."We have a good, solid base
with our seniors,” SouthWebster coach Kristie Johnsonsaid. “We have a lot of varsityexperience there. We're look-ing forward to a good season."The unquestioned standout
of the Lady Jeeps isUniversity of Cincinnatisignee Kayla Cook. The 5-foot-10 guard signed with theBearcats earlier this monthand, as a sophomore, earnedSOC II player of the year hon-ors."Kayla is a major part of
this whole program," Johnsonsaid. "We try to get the highschool girls involved as much
as we can with biddy ball andthe little kids just look up toall the them, especially‘Cookie’. That's what builds aprogram... So she is not justhuge to this team, she is hugeto the whole program."Cook, as well as the other
six seniors —Briana Rawlins,Taylor Queen, Tosha Blanton,Kendra Clark, HannahMontgomery and Ali Hadsell, all have varsity experience."I expect a lot out of Briana
Rawlins this year. She is real-ly starting to step up,"Johnson said. "She can scorefrom the outside and she canpost up. So I'm looking for herto be a big factor this year. Also Taylor Queen... I lookfor her to be a big factor, espe-cially defensively."
Two freshman have caughtthe eye of their coach as well,Kaci Messer and Katie Hanes.Johnson is expecting goodthings from her rookies in theLady Jeeps' quest to dethroneOak Hill as league champs."Oak Hill of course is going
to have an incredible team, also Valley has everyone backand is going to be good,"Johnson said. "We can't everleave out Wheelersburg,Minford and all of the (teams). They are solid programs andevery year they're going tohave good players... It's goingto be tough in the SOC but itgives us an advantage duringtournaments."

GO TIGERS!
With core returning, Waverly will be toughBy JOHN STEGEMANPDT Sports Editor
WAVERLY — Waverly'sboys basketball will look tocontinue improving in 2009-10.After improving from five
wins in 2007 to 13 wins lastseason and with the core oflast year's team back,Waverly is hoping to com-pete for a conference title.Leading the way for
Waverly once again will beHarrison Martin. The 6-foot-4 junior led the team in scor-ing and rebounding last sea-son, averaging about 20points and 10 rebounds pergame as a sophomore.Martin will be joined again
by Jake Kretzer, a sopho-more who spent his fresh-man season showing his skillfrom behind the arc, hittingmore than 50 3-pointers.Waverly coach TravisRobertson said Kretzer hasimproved and could be a bigpart of the offense this year.
Last season Kretzer averaged13 points per game.New to the team this sea-
son will be Sam Johnston, a5-10 point guard fromAustralia. Robertson saidJohnston is a talented playerwith solid fundamentals butadded that he is still adjust-ing to Waverly's style ofplay.Whether Johnston is ready
to go for game one or notisn't of terrible importancehowever, as last year's start-ing point guard RheadonRemy is back for anotherseason. Devan Kelly is alsoexpected to contribute andDerek Roback, who aver-aged around 10 points pergame last season, is back forhis senior campaign as well."We have pretty much our
main players back and we'vegot some kids to surroundthem," Robertson said. "Ourbiggest downfall this year isgoing to be depth. As long aswe can play hard and playdefense and guard people
without fouling I think we'llbe O.K... We had, from theyear before, won five games. From five to 13 wins the nextseason I think we're headingin the right direction. We gota good core of kids comingback."Robertson said the TIgers
are capable of competing fora league championship thisseason. To win it they willneed to unseat defendingSOC II and defending statechampions Oak Hill, and animproved Wheelersburgteam and the rest of analways tough conference."If we take care of busi-

Waverly young but experienced for 2009-10By JOHN STEGEMANPDT Sports Editor
WAVERLY — A four-winseason doesn't often lead to anoptimistic outlook the follow-ing year but some of thechanges that have taken place atWaverly have things looking up.Head coach John Bonifield
is among a host of new coach-es in the area this season. Thefirst-year coach was Waverly'sjunior varsity coach last sea-son. Before that, he spent fouryears as a volunteer assistantcoach and six years runningWaverly's Biddy Ball programs.Bonifield takes over from for-
mer coach Nikki McGinnis
who went 4-18 in 2008-09.Not only doesWaverly have a
new coach, they will also havesome new young faces steppinginto bigger roles with just twoseniors on the roster."We're a young team,"
Bonifield said. "A lot of sopho-mores played last year but we'restill young... I'm actually expect-ing good things from them."Waverly's top returning scor-
er is the 5-foot-10 Ali Wallswho scored roughly sevenpoints per game last season.Bonifield is also expecting bigthings from guards HannaBrewster and AudraWilliamson.Manning the post positions
will be Walls and CatlinShilling. Paige Cisco andDarian Harris are both 5-foot-10 or taller as well.Alex Roback, who joined the
varsity midway through lastseason, and Bailey Diener areboth back, bringing defensivetoughness. Taylor Casey andBrooke Corcoran round out thevarsity roster. While the Lady Tigers are
young, several players have var-sity experience. That combinedwith a strong off-season pro-gram have Bonifield thinkingWaverly can make some noisein the Southern OhioConference.
"There's no easy day off inthe SOC," Bonifield acknowl-edged. "I've heard we're (pro-jected) to finish down at the bot-tom of the pack. We finishedahead of PortsmouthWest but Ihear they have some goodfreshmen this year... I thinkwe'll be really competitive."Bonifield said the Lady
Tigers will be a man-to-mandefensive team and will runmore of a motion offense thisseason than they did last year.If that translates into an early
win or two to help the players'confidence, there's no tellinghow well Waverly could do in2009-10.

Oaks not just one-year wonders
By CHRIS DUNHAMPDT Sports Writer
OAK HILL — Oak Hill’sLady Oaks have all the toolsthey need to defend last sea-son’s SOC II title and repeatits run to the state tournament.More specifically, theyreturn all five starters and theirmajor bench contributors froma year ago."The kids are just greatkids," Lady Oaks' head coachDoug Hale said. "They made agreat run last year and we'vebeen telling them every newseason you've got to reset. We've got to get together, real-ize what was successful for usand build on that, work hardand enjoy each other's compa-ny for three-to-four months."The Lady Oaks return a trioof seniors who played large
roles on last year's squad inTaylor Butler, RebeccaPuckett and Karissa Adkins. Thus far, they have steppedinto their roles as seniors anddone well."That's something we'vedone in our program foryears," Hale said. "We alwayshave high expectations for ourseniors. They set the pace asfar as leadership goes in prac-tice and being timely to allevents. Karissa Adkins,Rebecca Puckett and TaylorButler have challenges theydidn't have last year and havefilled in very well. We lookforward to an exciting yearfrom them."Joining those three seniorsare five juniors and sopho-mores who saw significanttime as underclassmen lastyear in the Lady Oaks' eight-
player rotation."Last year we had threestrong freshmen — LakinCaudill, Breanna Butler andTaylor Hale," Coach Hale said."They came in, played andpaid huge dividends for us lastseason. This year, they're moreconfident and understand theprogram better... Our juniorclass is also very strong withMikie Strite and KelseyBurton who both played bigroles as sophomores."With everyone back aftersuch a successful season, Halebelieves his team knowseveryone on their schedulewill be looking to knock offthe defending SOC, sectional, district and regional champs."I think they realize that,"Hale said. "Having gone 25-2last year and making it to thestate title game and having our
key components back... we'vegone out in our preseasonpracticing like there's a bulls-eye on our backs. Our scrim-mage schedule has been asstrong as it's ever been."That scrimmage scheduleincluded games against D-IVpower Waterford, as well aslarger schools like OlentangyLiberty and GreenfieldMcClain. The hope now is that theteam carries what it learnedfrom last year's run and thispreseason into regular seasonplay."We need to play our besteach game," Hale said,"because we're going to geteveryone else's best game thisyear."

OAK HILL — Oak Hillbelieved inMarch when it wentto Columbus and returnedhome with a Division IV statetitle.Less than a year later, theOaks return to the court as a D-III team with three of thestarters from the state champi-onship team back and their sitesset on another successful sea-son."Well you'd like to duplicateit, that's for sure," Oak Hillhead coach Norm Persin saidwith a smile. "We alreadytalked to our kids saying 'Don'tlet down your guard, we justwant to continue. Don't reflecton what we did last yearbecause last year is gone butdon't give up the hope and thedream. You want to continue tobe a great basketball team.'"Returning to keep things
going for the Oaks is the statetournament's most outstandingplayer Kyle Ondera."Kyle's going to be Kyle,"Persin said. "He's going to fuelour offense and generate ourdefense off his athleticism. He'sgoing to make a lot of thingshappen and he always does."Also returning for the Oaksare juniors Jesse Slone andWesten Hale. The duo startedfor the Oaks last season andwill be expected to take onexpanding roles with the gradu-ations of JD Hale and RyanBorden, two of the team's topthree scorers from a year ago."Now I've already talked toWesten and Jesse and said 'Youguys are a year older'," Persinsaid. "In the past, those guyswere kind of like 'We'll play ourrole and get it to Ryan and JDand Kyle' but now the situationis, you guys have got to step up.It was kind of like what theydid in football this year. They
need to step up and make theplays instead of watching theother guys make plays."Those two made a number ofbig plays for the Oaks this foot-ball season, carrying the teamto a 10-0 regular season andregional semifinal appearance. They now return to the court, where they are also familiarwith success."We're getting off to a latestart, we know, because of foot-ball," Persin said. "At the samepoint in time, we have to bepatient. We've got enough vet-erans here who know whatthey're doing in the threestarters we've got back. Theyknow how to win. They knowwhat it takes to win so we'reputting a lot of leadership intotheir hands and hopefully wecan just pull together and be areal nice basketball teamagain."Persin has coached his shareof nice teams. Last year's Oaks
were the ninth team to makeregionals under Persin's guid-ance. With the state champi-onship banner now hanging inOakHill, he knows the bullseyeon his team's back will be evenbigger."That just comes with theprogram," Persin said."Personally, myself, I'm used toit. It was the same way when Iwas at Chesapeake all thoseyears. I keep warning our kids(the bullseye is) going to be abigger one now that we've wonthe state championship."But the coach wouldn't haveit any other way."I'd rather it be this way thannot because if it's not this way, what would you have?" Persinsaid. "People wouldn't care andnow they want us to win andthat's part of building a success-ful program so that's what wewant."

Mohawks to be more consistentByJOHNSTEGEMANPDT Sports Editor
M c D E R M O T T —Northwest, in 2008-09, was ateam that could wow on aTuesday and struggle on aFriday. The ups and downs oflast season led to a .500 finishbut coach Rick Scarberry saidthis season's Mohawks will beof a different mold. With 6-foot-5 Hank Leslie
and his 21 points and 10rebounds a game returning asthe core of Northwest's offense, the Mohawks could be a sleep-er pick to make a lot of noise inthe SOC II.Also returning from last sea-
son's team is second-leadingscorer Kreig Crabtree, whoaveraged roughly 15 points pergame last season, as well as
Chaise Hall, Kenny Crabtree,Eric Frantz and Mark Moore. On Northwest's media day, a
week before the season tip-off,Scarberry said the starting line-up wasn't set in stone but thatLeslie, Hall, Kenny and KreigCrabtree were likely starterswith four or five players bat-tling for the final spot.Among those players were
junior Dylan Brown, a transferfrom Peebles who played wellduring that program's success-ful run last season. The addition of Brown will
also change theMohawks' styleof play."We feel like we're going to
run the ball up and down a littlemore this year," Scarberry said."We've always played a littlebit more possession basketballwith Hank in there because we
know we could always go inthere and he can get you two ora free throw. I feel like withDylan Brown moving in andthe improvements some of ourother kids have made that we'regoing to be able to run eight ornine kids and push it up anddown a little bit more."That depth will be critical to
Northwest's goals this season.Among the varsity returners theMohawks will also haveJeremy Blankenship on the var-sity squad after a successful JVseason last year. Jerod Millerand Luke Brown should alsosee varsity time for theMohawks as will CollinLaJoye. Caleb Brown, KyleSimon and Tyler Vastine roundout a varsity roster that hasoptimism running high inMcDermott.
"We're looking forward tothe season," Scarberry said."Our kids are very excited. Wehave a very tough schedule thisyear. We feel like our league isgoing to be very good."The league, as is often the
case, looks stacked for 2009-10but the Mohawks have everyintention of trying to win it."Our goal is always to win
our league but we're also realis-tic," Scarberry said."Wheelersburg also has every-body back plus a pretty goodpoint guard moving in. OakHill has a lot of kids back tooand they're still young but wethink we can play with thoseteams and beat them. Our kidshave to come to play everynight."It all starts for Northwest on
Dec. 4 on the road against Clay.

McDERMOTT — It wasn'tthe best of seasons for the LadyMohawks last year with theteam falling in the sectional finalwith an 8-13 record.Last year's team though was
going through some of thegrowing pains typical of ayoung team. The advantage of ayoung team one year however,is an experienced one the next. With coach Mark Spears
entering his second season at thehelm, the LadyMohawks returntheir entire starting lineup fromlast season. Last year's starters, who are projected to start thisseason as well, are KatieMalone, Devan Scarberry,Brooke Smith, Chelsi Wilsonand BrittanyWilliams.
Scarberry led the team inscoring last season at 11 pointsper game with Williams rightbehind.Kaylee Ross also returns to
the varsity squad this seasonwith Ashley Gilley, JennaEuton, Kayla Clark and RachaelShumway coming up from theJV team. Payton Gubernathjoins the program after movingin fromMinnesota andMadisonSpears returns to the programafter not playing since her fresh-man year. With thewhole starting lineup
back, and the new additions, expectations are higher this sea-son."Expectations are a lot high-
er," Spears said. "We felt likewegave a couple ball games awaylast year, that happens to every-body. The kids had a good sum-
mer. Things are a little bit rustybut the kids are working hard. With the work habits we haveright now if we continue that wehope to see more success thanwhat we saw last year."While the team is more expe-
rienced, the LadyMohawks stilllack height inside. The team’stop two rebounders last seasonwere Williams and Smith. Bothplayers were listed as 5-foot-8last season. With the lack of size the Lady
Mohawks will look to causeturnovers on defense and turnthose into quick points."We're going to have to be a
hustling, hard-nosed teambecause we don't have a lot ofsize," Spears said. "We're goingto have to get after it. Thedefense is going to have to put alot of pressure on the basketball.
We're going to have to makesome turnovers to generate ouroffense a little bit."With the up tempo style of
defense, Spears said plenty ofplayers will get court time."If they play defense like I
want them to then a lot of peopleare going to play," Spears said."So if they're sitting thereworry-ing about starting — that's onething I wouldn't worry a wholelot about."Spears acknowledged that
Oak Hill is the likely favorite torepeat as SOC II champions andsaid that many are pickingNorthwest to battle around thebottom of the league."We'll find out about that,"
Spears said. "They got a lot ofexperience last year and hope-fully that will pay off for us asthe season starts."

NEW BOSTON — Afterwinning three-straight SOCI championships it would bebe reasonable to expect theLady Tigers to take a year orso to reload.Nothing could be further
from the plan. The Lady Tigers may have
lost their leading scorerfrom last season's 18-4 cam-paign to graduation but theyreturn three senior starterswho have never known whatit's like to not win a confer-ence title — and they're noteager to find out."We know there are some
teams that have gotten bet-ter...," New Boston coach JonEstep said. "But we feel theroad to the championshipstill goes through here. That'sthe mentality we're takinginto this. We're not relin-quishing it until somebodycomes in and takes it fromus."Standing in the way of any
other team taking that titlewill be Missy Buckley,Alyssa Raines and MychaelHamilton. The trio served asa supporting cast to somedegree in past years but thisyear will bear the spotlightthemselves. Buckley is thetop returning scorer and oneof the teams top defenders, averaging 13 points and foursteals a game last year.Raines scored around eight
points per game last seasonwith 11 rebounds andHamilton made contributionsboth offensively and defen-sively.The biggest loss to gradua-
tion last season for NewBoston was Kayla Wiley. TheSOC I all-star is playing thisseason for Shawnee State."It will be a different style
of play because Kayla did somuch," Estep said. "I don'tthink the style is going tochange dramatically. I thinkit's just the roles. The three ofthem combined in Missy,Alyssa and Mychael will stepin and kind of be the leaders
out there in their own littleway."After the top three, New
Boston should also get con-tributions from ChristianLykins, Mychael Hardingand Kaci McNutt, thoughMcNutt will be out early onwith an ankle injury.Even the freshmen will
make an impact for the LadyTigers this season withShawna Buckley andCourtney Delotell likely tosee a good deal of playingtime."We know we're going to
have some doubters," Estepsaid. "People will say 'They
lost Wiley, so they don'thave anything comingback.' I feel my three sen-iors who have started thelast two years — I'll putthem out there alongsideany other team's top threeplayers. The role players wehave to play alongside thosegirls have gained a lot ofexperience practicing andplaying over the summerand I think we have thenucleus to make the run forthat fourth straight. I knowit's not going to be easy."

New faces to lead at New BostonBy JOHN STEGEMANPDT Sports Editor
NEW BOSTON — Lastseason wasn't the most mem-orable for the New Bostonboys basketball program. The team finished 7-15 and
lost in the sectional finals.Only one regular starter
returns from that squad how-ever, giving the Tigers achance for a fresh start.Leading the way for New
Boston this season will likelybe sophomore Levi Horsley. The 6-foot-4 forward aver-aged just under seven pointsper game last season as a
starter but will be expected tocarry a bigger load this year.Helping the cause will be
three other players who start-ed intermittently throughoutthe year in Drew Delotell,Nate Henson and Zac Wolfe. The Tigers also expect con-
tributions from Tyler Messer,a senior transfer, and fresh-man point guard ShaneBuckley.Coach Don Stapleton said
Buckley will be a big part ofthe offense."I met the kid in seventh
grade and he's been playingeveryday and he's alwaysstarted," Stapleton said. "He's
not real big but he's going tobe the (point) guard and we'rehoping he can distribute."For opening night,
Stapleton said the startinglineup would likely beBuckley, Horsley, Henson,Messer and Delotell withWolfe coming off the benchas sixth man. The whole newlineup will lead to a new styleof play."We'll be a little more
structured and methodicalthan we've been in the past,"Stapleton said. "We probablywon't try to run as much."Stapleton said Symmes
Valley is a likely favorite in
the SOC I but said the Tigerscan compete."As long as we play
together as a team we couldfinish in the top third andmake some noise maybe,"Stapleton said. "A lot of it isgoing to come down towhether or not we have teamcohesiveness."Stapleton will be entering
his seventh season as coach, making him one of the mosttenured coaches in the SOCI.

Horsley will be main offensive threat for SOC I Tigers
By ALI KEATONPDT Sports Writer
SCIOTOVILLE— The girlsteam from Sciotoville takespride in its ability to shoot thethree-ball, and the LadyTartans are returning their bestat it. Meghan Williams wasone of the best in the state ayear ago, as a sophomore."Meghan Williams finished
fourth in the state in three pointpercentage," East coach JackBranon said. "She shot over 40percent from three last year. She was our leading scorer andis a junior this year."Just as any team, the Lady
Tartans cannot live and diealong three-point arc. Branonexplained the improvementsnecessary to go from the 8-14record of last season to becom-ing a league contender."We have to value our pos-
sessions," Branon said. "Wehave to cut down our turnoversand we have to keep peoplefrom coming inside and wehave to rebound. If we do thosethings, we've got a shot (in theSOC I)... And we have to shootfree throws better."Two starters were lost to
graduation, Brittany Caudill, atop-rebounder, and CierraWright, who along withCaudill was a scorer and three-year starter.Point guard Jessica
McCallister and post playerKatie Bennett return to thestarting lineup this year as sen-iors."Jessica McCallister is a
three-year starter, really runs
our offense and makes thingsgo for us," Branon said. "She isan outstanding defensive play-er out front, as well."Katie Bennett is an inside
player, kind of undersized, sheis a 5-foot-7," Branon said."She has nice inside offensivemoves, rebounds well andplays good inside defense forus."A 5-foot-11 junior Toni
Lang will be another strongpresence in the post, especiallyas a rebounder and defender.Sierra Dingess and BrittanySwords will see significantplaying time at the varsitylevel, just as they did a yearago."Brittany Swords will see
significant amount of playing
time as the sixth-man. She is aspark-plug, defensive typeplayer," Branon said. "Mosteverybody that will play,(received) significant minuteslast year. We are relativelyexperienced. We have two sen-iors and four juniors back. Andwe have some freshmen andsophomores that are going toget some playing time too."Area coaches have agreed
that the SOC I will be as tight arace as any, with New Bostonas the defending champs andthe rest of the division closingthe gap this off-season."I honestly think everybody
has a chance to be playingmeaningful games clear up tothe end of the season," Branonsaid. "Eastern is going to be
tough to beat, and obviouslyNew Boston is the champ untilsomebody dethrones them.Notre Dame has a couple biggirls inside... Green's AdrianneBlankenship might be the bestplayer in the league, and theywill be pretty solid."I'm hard pressed to say that
anybody is really the favorite. Iwouldn't be surprised if the(SOC I winner) had three orfour losses."The Lady Tartans begin their
quest for the top-spot in theleague when East travels toFranklin Furnace tomorrownight to face the Green LadyCats.

S C I O T O V I L L E —Uncertainty surrounds the EastTartans this preseason as threestarters from last year's 16-8team were lost to graduation.Atotal of six graduated seniors, all of which stood at least 5-foot-11 inches tall, leave Eastundersized and unsure of howthis year might play out.The misfortune continues as
senior offensive threat ZachRawlins will miss his final bas-ketball campaign, sidelined bya knee injury."We lost Zach Rawlins who
was a starter and is a senior thisyear," East coachAdam Baileysaid. "He tore his ACL in thefirst football scrimmage thisyear. I think Zach averagedabout 15 points a game lastyear, so I'd say we lost proba-bly 75 to 80 percent of ouroffense this year with himbeing hurt and the seniors thatwe lost."A first-year head coach,
Bailey now leads the Tartans asformer East coach TravisBradford has relocated to Westto take over the Senators.Bailey, athletic director of
five years in Sciotoville, hasnine years of basketball coach-ing experience as a varsityassistant, junior varsity andjunior high coach. The newhead coach explained how hisundersized team will operateoffensively this season."Wewant to get out and push
the tempo, we were bigger (inpast seasons) but right now we
only have one kid that is over6-foot-1 on our whole roster,"Bailey said. "We are definitelysmall, but we're athletic.Hopefully we can push the balland run an up-tempo styleoffense."Two seniors returning to the
Tartans are brothers Jon andJordan Garrett. Jon is a two-year starter while twin Jordanhas started on and off since hissophomore season. Both haveearned varsity basketball letterseach year since becomingfreshmen."We look for (Jon) to do a lot
of our scoring and I'm hopingthat Jordan has a break outyear," Bailey said.
Devan Briggs, a junior pointguard, could be an impact play-er for the Tartans along withfellow classmate JustinPhillips. Meanwhile, sopho-mores Nathan Toller andJayvonWright are battling for aspot in the post and into thestarting lineup. The SOC I squad will look to
its defense to carry them. Eastplans to frustrate opponentsinto costly turnovers and con-vert the miscues into points."We are small so we're going
to have to make teams turn itover, so we can get out andrun," Bailey said. "I think theleague is probably as competi-tive as it has been in the last
couple of years, especially inthe top half... A lot of teams arereturning lots of starters andoffense."To round out an eight-man
rotation, minutes off the benchwill be given to sophomoreNathan King and freshmanJustin Crager as the banged-upTartans find their way in SOC Iplay."Before injuries happened I
would have thought we couldhave competed for the league,"Bailey said. "But right nowwere just looking to get betterand compete in every game."

Lady Tartans return trio of starters
By CHRIS DUNHAMPDT Sports Writer
Notre Dame's Lady Titansfeature one of the SOC'syoungest rosters this seasonwith two seniors and no jun-iors.Those seniors, Catie
Delabar and Hannah Shupert, have been in the program andboth saw a significantamount of starts last season."Hannah Shupert and Catie
Delabar are our seniors andthey are more excited thisyear than ever before," NotreDame coach Walt Monroesaid. "They have shown lotsof leadership and were votedas the captains by the team."
Joining the two seniors inthe starting lineup will besophomores Erin Monroeand Katie Kayser, as well asfreshman Jen Arnzen."Erin Monroe is a sopho-
more will provide lots ofscoring and defense for us,"Monroe said. "Jen Arnzen issix feet tall and hasimproved a lot over the sum-mer. She will start as a fresh-man."Arnzen steps into the cen-
ter position vacated byJeanne Estep's graduation. Ayear ago, the Lady Titansalso had two seniors (Estepand Kaitlyn Canter), but hada three-person junior classwhich featured Shupert and
Delabar.This year, however, the
Lady Titans' roster featuresno juniors, four sophomoresand eight freshmen."We are a very, very young
team," Monroe said. "We areexcited because we did wellin previews and in scrim-mages and we expect toimprove all year."Coming off the bench will
be freshmen Regan Fanninand Libby Welch. Both areexpected to see significantplaying time in the seven-player rotation. The youngsquad hopes to out-do the 6-14 record from a season agoby getting better with eachgame.
"We expect to improve allyear and, by halfway throughthe season, we hope to be areal good team," Monroesaid. The team will see plenty of
opportunities for challengeand improvement early in theseason. The team's first threegames are home contestsagainst SOC I foes.Following that opening
sequence, the Lady Titansplay six games in a 10-daystretch from Dec. 10-19, giv-ing them a total of nine con-tests before the Christmasbreak.

Titans competing now to win laterBy CHRIS DUNHAMPDT Sports Writer
In a school with less than40 boys, having a goodturnout for teams can be anissue. Not this year for Notre
Dame basketball. With 23 players in the bas-
ketball program, the Titansfeature the first freshmanteam in school history andbattles across the board onthe varsity team."We're still evaluating and
looking at kids in differentspots," first-year head coachMatt Mader said. "We don'thave a lot of experience backand are looking to fill ourstarting positions throughthe scrimmages."The Titans do have some
experience in their upper-classmen. Alex Glocknerhas been playing varsity bas-ketball since his freshmanyear and is establishing him-
self as a leader for this year'steam."We have to start with our
seniors," Mader said. "Wehave Alex Glockner, a four-year player who has been inthe program. Alex is going tobe our leader. He, Jeffrey(Emnett) and Greg (July) arethe kids our younger guysare looking up to for leader-ship. They've done good thusfar to provide that."Four juniors and some
underclassmen make up therest of the roster and give theTitans even more competi-tion as they approach thenew season."That's what we talked to
the kids about," Mader said."We want to create a situa-tion where we're competingin practice. We want to haveguys competing for spots, not just during the season, but in the offseason. That'sno secret that we need to becompeting in the offseason
to get better."This season, Mader wants
to see that in-practice com-petition make the team goodenough to compete on thecourt each night. While theSOC I returns a lot of its tal-ent from a year ago, Maderexpects his team to be up tothe challenge and fare well."We want to compete
every night," Mader said. "Iknow that Clay and Easternand Symmes and East returna lot of their core players, sonight in and night out itseems the league will bevery balanced. We're justhoping that we can compete. We talked to our kids abouttaking it one game at a timeone practice at at time. That'swhat we're trying to focuson. We're hoping to comeout and compete, play hardand hustle night in and nightout."The focus early has been
to get the team ready for bas-
ketball season while theycompete with one anotherfor playing position. Withthe majority of the playerscoming in from a fall sport,Mader has been working onthe transition from the fieldor course to the court."We've really been focus-
ing on conditioning and get-ting our bodies acclimated tobasketball," Mader said."We've got a lot of kids thatplay multiple sports. Thetransition for most fromfootball to basketballinvolves trying to get basket-ball legs. We have athleteswho ran cross country andplayed golf who haveworked hard in the gymalso."The transition ends and
season tips off Dec. 4 whenthe Titans travel to West.

A young Lady Pantherteam hopes to continue thesuccess of the 16-6 recordand second place league fin-ish from a season past. Thisyear, however, experience isnot a strong suit."We lost three seniors off
the group and we have noseniors this year," Claycoach Kevin Castle said."We aren't returning a lot ofexperience."The only full-time varsity
players returning to thisyear's roster are juniorsKatherine Bauer and HollyHempill.Fellow classmate Keely
Craft split time between jun-ior varsity and varsity a yearago.Junior Chelsea Beegan and
sophomores Emily Spriggsand Julie Williams move upto the varsity roster of onlysix upperclassmen, whilefive freshmen hope to earn abasketball letter in 2009-2010."We are looking for min-
utes out of all of them,"Castle said. "MadisonWhitley is a freshman com-
ing in there, (we look forher) to get quite a bit of min-utes."In his second year as head
coach of the Lady Panthers,Castle is hesitant to predicthow the competitive SOC Imight go. A year ago NewBoston was the one leaguefoe that Clay could not over-come. The Lady Tigers nowhave the rest of the leaguetracking them."We just want to go out
and play, and where we fallis where we fall," Castlesaid. "We have a goodgroup of kids... They workvery hard. We'll see wherewe end up."The young squad will
have its work cut out for itas each league opponentwill be faced within the firstnine games. Not to mention, the other two Decembercontests will pit the LadyPanthers against strongSOC II opponents SouthWebster and Valley. All in all, Clay looks for-
ward to the year ahead asthe Lady Panthers beginregular season play Nov. 30.
"We're excited about thegroup of kids that came outto play and we're having agood time working withthem," Castle said. "We aregoing to enjoy this seasonand do the best we can."New Boston hosts Clay

A disappointing 6-14 regularseason and 6-8 conferencerecord in 2008-2009 leavesmuch to be desired for thePanthers class of 2010. The goodnews is that Clay returns most ofits height for the new season.Varsity returners Chaz
Lawson, Max Graham,Nathan Burchett and GabeDuduit all range from 6-foot-2to 6-foot-4 while guards JonValentine and CameronCaseman each stand at least 5-foot-11.As a sophomore, Valentine
was an impact player in thePanthers' front court. Now ajunior, Valentine will be partof a balanced offensive attack."We're going to be really,
balanced. In our scrimmages,we had five or six guys dowell so we are going to bereally balanced," Clay coachJack Trainer said. "We want tobe able to score from insideand outside."Of the Panthers four seniors
(Lawson, Caseman, CodyDelotell and Jacob Nolan), themost varsity experience hasbeen acquired by Lawson, fol-lowed by Caseman with thesecond most minutes of theclass. Lawson, a center, willbe counted on for reboundingas well as scoring during hissenior season.Clay will look to pressure
teams on defense and createscoring opportunities as thePanthers lack a standoutoffensively. The SOC I squadbegins its season with fourstrong SOC II opponents fol-lowed by four straight divisiongames. The opening week could
give the Panthers the neededtime to build team chemistry.
"We have a long, long wayto go," Trainer said. "We don'treally have that guy that willgo out and score 25 pointsevery night. We're not thatkind of team."With league opponent and
defending SOC I champWestern losing key playersfrom its roster, a favorite in theSOC I is tough to determine. The Panthers are excitedabout the chance to improve
from a season ago."We're looking forward to
the opportunity to see what wecan do this season," Trainersaid. On Friday, Dec. 4, Clay will
host the Mohawks ofNorthwest High School forthe season tip-off inRosemount.

program that had a winningrecord last season and broughthome a sectional championship. The first-year head coach has
a background coaching PeeWeeand junior high and has workedwith the varsity the last three sea-sons.Coming off a good year
though, don't look for wholesalechanges."For lack of a betterword (for-
mer head coachDale) Royse is amentor to me," Bridges said.
"He took me under his wing. The guy knows basketball. I'mnot going to say we think exact-ly the same but for the most partand the way we treat the kids Ithink it's basically the same."We had some success last
year and we've got the core peo-ple back with some minorchanges," he added. "For themost part we're going to try andkeep things the same and buildon what we did last year."Leading the way for Green
again this season will beAdrianne Blankenship. The 5-foot-9 senior averaged 16 pointsand 13 rebounds a game last sea-son, firmly establishing herselfas one of the SOC I's top players. Also back this year is Brianna
Johnson, who started, andLauren Jones, who was secondon the team in scoring andrebounding. Hannah Collettreturns as does defensive stopperGidget Timberman. With such a strong group of
returning players, Bridges thinksan SOC title is a possibility —though certainly not a guarantee."I really think we ought to do
well," Bridges said. "I thinkwe'llbe competitive in our confer-ence. I think our conference ispretty even. I think we've got ashot to beat anybody on anygiven night, especially in ourconference."New Boston and Clay have
pretty well dominated for thepast eight to 10 years...," Bridges
added. "I believe there are prob-ably five teams who have a legitchance of winning it. I'm gladwe're one of those teams."On offense Green will try to
play an up tempo, aggressivestyle and will sport primarilyzone defense. The up tempostyle will be easier to maintainthis season because of the team'sdepth."This is probably the deepest
year we've had in five or sixyears player-wise," Bridgessaid. "We can actually go eightor nine deep and be prettycomfortable with that. Therewere a lot of games last yearwhen we didn't even sub...(The depth) will really make abig difference."

New coach, high hopes for GreenBy JOHN STEGEMANPDT Sports Editor
FRANKLIN FURNACE —A sense of normalcy has comeover the Green boys basket-ball program after a stormy2008-09 season.Last season’s Bobcats went
4-17 in a season that saw threedifferent men as head coach.Charlie Kitchen started theseason as head coach butresigned before the seasonended. Jeff Fraley finished outthe year as interim coach, leading the Cats to several lateseason wins.In the one game between
Kitchen’s resignation andFraley’s hiring, long-time jun-ior high coach Bobby Blantoncoached the team to a 68-37loss against East.Despite the loss, Blanton
must have liked something hesaw in the young team — tak-ing the head coaching job for2009-10 and returning a sense
of stability."I think the kids, just know-
ing that there is going to besome stability this year hasreally taken a load off theirshoulders," Blanton said. "Itold them I’m not going any-where no matter what hap-pens, at least this year. I thinkthey realize they’ve got peoplewho want them to succeed."Blanton coached junior high
ball at Green for the last sevenyears and has worked with thevarsity the last two seasons. He graduated from Green in1998.Last year’s record notwith-
standing, Blanton has plentyof talent to work with.Leading scorer Dustin
Stapleton, a senior, returns asdoes big man Matt Ratcliff, a6-foot-5 junior. Both playersare expected to start alongwith Nate Pinkerton and 6-0Patrick Pierce.Blanton said the last starting
spot could go to several play-
ers on a team that can go nineor 10 deep into its bench.Among the players shooting
for the last starting spot areTrenton Otworth, TylerHughes, Chad Lewis, TJMcCloud and Zane Poe.Along with depth, Green
has height. Ratcliff and Poeeach stand 6-foot-5.McCloud stands 6-foot-3
while Otworth, Stapleton andPinkerton are each 6-1. In factonly five of the varsity’s 14players are less than 6-foot."We’re hoping that we’re
going to be bigger than mostteams and that’s going to be toour advantage," Blanton said."This year, the other thing thatis going to help is that we’vegot more depth hopefully. We’re eight deep or nine deep.Maybe even 10 deep."The Green gameplan will
utilize that height."We’re going to protect the
inside of the paint and makethe other teams play an outside
game," Blanton said. "Playingwith effort and intensity iswhat we’re looking to do rightnow. Every loose ball is goingto be ours. That’s our goal."For this team that lost just
one senior to graduation andshowed improvement late lastseason, Blanton is confident. On top of the optimism forthis season, Blanton said hehopes to re-establish Green asthe power it once was in theSOC I."I think (the SOC I) is going
to be pretty even all the wayaround and hopefully we’ll bea surprise," he said. "We havea good record here as far asbasketball goes the last 20years. They just have to under-stand that and want to be apart of it... We’ve always beena factor in the SOC as long asI can remember."

RREEDDSSTTRREEAAKK PPRRIIDDEE!!!!!!
After last year, Piketon wants moreBy ALI KEATONPDT Sports Writer
PIKETON — TheRedstreaks are coming off themost successful season inPiketon basketball history, aregional championship andstate tournament appearance. The goal this season —accomplish more."The sequel to a successful
season is always tough,"Piketon coach Jeff Lisathsaid. "Naturally it could goeither way. We are hoping tobuild off that success and con-tinue to try to play at thatlevel."From the final-four squad,
Piketon lost its two leadingscorers, Jordan Brabson andCody Smith. Both 2009 grad-uates were named to the All-Ohio team as seniors whilehelping the Redstreaks com-pile a 24-3 record."Cody and Jordan were our
leaders last year. They werethe guys we looked to downthe stretch when we neededbaskets," Lisath said. "Theymade a lot of clutch shots for
us, so definitely someone isgoing to have to step up andfill that void."With two one-thousand
point scorers missing fromthe score book, theRedstreaks will need pointsfrom returning starters as wellas some new faces. The threeupperclassmen returning tothe starting lineup are 6-foot-6 forwards Keenan Brush andCaleb Southworth and two-year starter Evan Legg atguard. "We have a lot of kids back
and (we have) high expecta-tions of course," Lisath said."We are expecting Legg tocome in and do more scoringthis year. (We also expect) ourtwo inside guys, Southworthand Brush, to pick up thescoring a little bit. The kidsare really putting in the workbecause they want to stay atthat level."This preseason has given
the coaching staff some pleas-ant surprises. Senior JamesLewis and juniors JamieHelton and Jared Vulgamorehave improved their offensive
skill sets this offseason andwill be among a handful ofplayers Coach Lisath willcall-on and give significantminutes."We have four or five guys
that are basically even rightnow, and if each of them cangive us six or eight pointswe'll be right there," Lisathsaid. "That is kind of whatwe're hoping for, that guyscome in and contribute."This offseason, while his
players prepared for anothertournament run, Lisath had abig decision to make concern-ing the 2009-2010 basketballseason. Lisath had the opportunity
to become the head coach athis alma mater, PortsmouthHigh School, where in 1978he led the Trojans to theschool's third state title and in1988 was an assistant coachfor a fourth state champi-onship team. "It was a very tough deci-
sion. The only thing I can sayyou know is my spiritual life, through my prayers and seek-ing the Lord through the deci-
sion, the Lord just told me itwasn't time yet," Lisath said."Portsmouth was, when I gotinto coaching, that was mydream job... Before I retire, which could be a while, theopportunity may present itselfagain, I don't know. But rightnow this is home and I believethat what we have in the sys-tem right now, we shouldhave a long line of successhere at Piketon."For Piketon, last year's
unfinished business is fuel forthe fire this basketball season. The Redstreaks begin theiryear against Hillsboro onDec. 4, the starting point of aseason with high expecta-tions."I told them, getting to the
state tournament for mostpeople is a once and a lifetimething," Lisath said. "It hasalways been a goal to getthere, so now our goal has tobe to get back there... We havesome unfinished business. Ilook forward to some greatthings this season."

Piketon looking to rebound from graduationBy ALI KEATONPDT Sports Writer
PIKETON —The Lady'Streaks will have no easy winsin league play as they hope torebound from losing five seniorsfrom last year's team. The mostnotable loss to graduation wasone-thousand point scorerHeather Burns."(Burns) was our point guard
who did a lot of things for us,"Piketon coach Brett Corenosaid. "The other four (who grad-uated) contributed in many otherways, (including) reboundingand leadership. So the girls noware going to have to play newroles, they're going to have toeither score more points or grab
more rebounds... it's got to besplit up now between the fivethat I play this year. They haveto pick up their end of the bar-gain."Coreno was happy with his
team's preseason improvementsthus far and will count on theleadership of seniors MarissaHill and Holly Brabson as theteam continues its preparationand begins the season."Marissa Hill is a good three
point shooter and has expandedher game by taking the ball tothe basket more," Coreno said."Holly Brabson is very, veryathletic and one of our bestrebounders. She can defend aswell."Alex Southworth, a sopho-
more standing six-feet tall, willreturn to the starting lineup forthe Lady Streaks while 5-foot-11 center Tori Pelphrey will getsignificant minutes as a junior."Alex Southworth got 21
games under her belt last yearand we're looking for bigger andbetter things out of her thisyear," Coreno said. "ToriPelphrey, who was my back upcenter last year, will get signifi-cant playing time... we look forgood things from her."With SVC league play begin-
ning less than a week into theseason, Piketon travels toHuntington on Dec. 1. Theyoung Redstreaks will have lit-tle time to adjust to the new sea-son.
"Our conference is prettytough, Unioto, Zane Trace,Adena..." Coreno said. "It justdepends how our kids gel. Theirchemistry, with the new kids ofthe floor and (it depends on)how they accept their roles. Ifthose things can come togetherthen I think good things canhappen. It just depends howlong it takes us to get to thatpoint."Every night is going to be a
struggle because there will be noeasy wins," Coreno said."Usually you have one team youcan count on but you can't counton any team in our league for awin."

COACHING WINS
WINNINGEST TEAMS
By CHRIS DUNHAMPDT SportsWriter
MINFORD—Though theLady Falcons are the only SOCII team without a senior on theroster, they are not without expe-rience.MarkChaney's squad returns a
trio of juniors who saw a lot ofplaying time a year ago and willprovide leadership for the other-wise inexperienced team."Kendra Justice has steppedup
and is someone we'll be lookingto as a leader offensively,"Chaney said. "I think she's one ofthe better guards in the league.(Abby) Donahoe, defensively, was a really good ball player. With Kendra on the offensiveside and Donahoe on the defen-sive side, they've really helpedthe new kids coming in...(Laiken) Gambill plays a lot ofAAU ball with Kendra. She'sbeen doing a lot to help the postplayers coming out."Those playerswill be expected
to shoulder the load left behindby Minford's graduating class, which included 1,000-point scor-ers Whitney McManus andBreslyn Harris."We lost six seniors and all of
them contributed," Chaney said."Five of themwere either startersor right off the bench and that's ahard thing to adjust to. It was agood group of girls and they willbemissed. Hopefully those com-ing in can fill their shoes."
Tomake up for the scoring theLady Falcons lost, Chaney isfocusing on his team's defensemore this season."We lost a good bit of firepow-
er last year and will try to makeup for itwith speed and defense,"he said. "We have some goodshooters. But we're just going totry to get our defense up towherewe think it needs tobe and I thinkthe offense will come."Also coming returning to
action for Minford is juniorCourtney Spriggs, who missedmuch of last season with aninjury."Spriggs is just Spriggs,"
Chaney said. "She tore her ACLlast year and is back for us. Shemissed softball but played somevolleyball. With her speed offen-sively and 3-point shot she'll helpus out as well."A quartet of other juniors (Ali
Shepherd, Mariah Butcher, LoraFuhrmann and MacKenzieWilliams) who have been awayfrom the court for a few years, return to the Lady Falcons andare expected to contribute."The girls we have coming
back have stepped up and helpedthe others who will be playing alot," Chaney said. "We have girlswho haven't played varsity ballwhowill be playing a lot of min-utes this year. There are going tobe some nerves as they get outand see the varsity pace. Thosefour have never played in a varsi-
ty game before."Chaney noted that he expected
his team to get better as the yearwent on, helping them in a deep, tough SOC II."Our league it so tough with a
lot of good coaches and players,"Chaney said. "Of course Oak
Hill will be one of the teams tobeat. But you also have Valleyand ’Burg and other youngerteams. Everyone's improvingfrom top to bottom."

"Aaron Oesch is a goodsenior leader who does all thesmall things it takes to help ateam out," Shoemaker said."Caleb Cowgill also startedmost of the year and we'reexpecting some good thingsfrom him. Cory McKnight isone of the most athletic play-ers in the league and we lookfor him to have another goodyear."The other two seniors on
the Falcon roster also figureto see a lot of playing time."Duncan Jordan was first
team all-state in soccer andgives us a good post pres-ence," Shoemaker said."Brock Partlow has reallyimpressed us. He workedreally hard in the offseasonand we expect him to seesome minutes this year... Ithink they've all stepped upand are all taking on a littlebit a of a leadership role. "The junior class is high-
lighted by Mark Slone, whosaw varsity time last year, butmoves into the 1-position thisyear."Mark Slone will be our
point guard this year,"Shoemaker said. He's just ahard-nosed kid. He plays bas-ketball like he does football. He'll do a good job runningthe point for us. The rest ofthe kids are guys who playedJV last year."With the lineup the Falcons
feature this season, Minfordwill be spreading the floorand having a lot of motion inits offensive sets."We're mostly trying to fit
our personnel," Shoemakersaid. "We don't have anyoneover 6-2, so we're going to
have a very guard-orientedoffense."A 1999 graduate of
Minford High SchoolShoemaker has a good sup-porting crew with a pair offormer Minford basketballhead coaches (JohnStrickland and Kyle Copley)on board as assistants, aswell as Scott Caudill, whoplayed high school basket-ball with Shoemaker."It helps me out getting
back into the Minford sys-tem," Shoemaker said. "Ourtime together is very enjoy-able. We get along great andhopefully it benefits thekids... I get a chance tocoach with John Strickland, who I played for and KyleCopley, who is still helpingout. It's a neat situation tocoach with a guy you playedfor."

to this team."With the balance of expe-
rienced seniors and talentedyouth, Maynard hopes tocompete even though hisoverall numbers are down."We've got less girls than
last year, but we have morespeed and athletic abilitythis year," he said. "You'llsee we want to be a press-ing team. That's where wewant to be to createturnovers and that's wherewe're striving to be."Combine the players the
Lady Senators have inplace with a good offsea-

of progress," Maynardsaid. "The girls workedhard in the offseason and itlooks like it's really paidoff. It should be an excitingseason for us. I look for usto be a lot stronger than wewere last year."The Lady Senators will
be tested early when theyhost three of the SOC II'stop teams from a year agoin their first three games(Minford, South Webster,Oak Hill). From there, West hits the

"Later on, we'll conspire,As we dream, by the fire.To face unafraid,The plans that we made.Walkin' in in Winter
Wonderland."
Ah, the winter sports seasonis finally here and that means
basketball fever is sweeping theregion.Though some schools have
only recently put away the foot-ball pads, all the attention is nowon the roundball. We're glad to bring you yet
another basketball season pre-view section and this year'stheme steals a line from a classicChristmas song, WinterWonderland —"Dream by theFire."Our area athletes have a pas-
sionate fire within them thatdrives them to be among thebest in the state and the beauty
of every new season is thedreams that come with it.At the start of a season, every-
one is 0-0. The teams that willwin state championships thisseason and the teams that willgo 0-21 are all dead even today. So as a fan of sports in gener-
al I'd like to encourage all of ourathletes and coaches to followthat dream fueled by their owninternal fire.Whether that dreamis to end the season inColumbusas the last team standing, to raisea conference title banner, to fin-ish with a winning season oreven just to keep improving and
have fun playing the game ofbasketball — go after it.As is often the case, there
have been some changes at thePDT since last basketball sea-son. We've a new talentedwriter, Ali Keaton, to thesports staff for one thing. ChrisDunham and I are still here aswell. Some things to know.Because of circumstances
beyond our control, no gamesplayed on Monday can bereported in Tuesday's edition. There is an early deadline onMonday nights that makes
coverage impossible. AnyMonday games that are calledin will be reported inWednesday's editions. We've made some changes
in the way we put the papertogether as well which willallow us to cover roughly 20more games than we did lastyear. While we won't be atevery game, every coach in thearea has our contact informa-tion and they've always beengreat about reporting theirscores.Another feature some of you
may have become familiar
with during football season isour video highlights. We had afootball game up as “Game ofthe Week” each week this sea-son and we intend to run bas-ketball highlights. We mayeven expand it to include coachor player interviews as well. We're excited about this sea-
son and we hope you are too.We know the student-athleteshave been working hard andthe coaches have been stayinglate and it's finally time tostart seeing all that work payoff.See you at the games.
